First of all I would like to place a few words to my dear readers and followers, your comments and requests are greatly appreciated. Its for those picture perfect moments that I love doing what I am doing! 16 Years in design and 8 in the publishing business brought me strength and a smile day after day! Thank you and keep on reading our publications.
When is the best time to downsize to a smaller home?
At some point in our lives, most of us will have to deal with selling the home we've lived in for many years and moving into something smaller. But, giving up our beloved family home and downsizing into something smaller is always a difficult decision. Many seniors make the mistake of waiting too long to move into a smaller home. Sometimes, they put off downsizing until a death or an illness occurs. At that point, the move may become an absolute necessity and they could be forced to sell their home quickly and move into a retirement home. Having to sell quickly is always a disadvantage for home sellers because there's no time to properly prepare the property for sale. And, as you know, selling a home in "as is" condition leaves lots of money on the table. Also, when people are forced to move quickly they often don't have time to find the perfect living situation and they may have to compromise. It's easy to understand why some homeowners stay put longer than they should. We all have a strong emotional attachment to our home and the thought of making a retirement move can be very depressing. However, it's always best to look at the positive side of life. There are many benefits to a low maintenance lifestyle. Time and money are freed up for other activities such as hobbies and travel. An easier living situation, without stairs to climb and with assistance readily available if needed, is popular with many seniors who don't want to be a burden on their loved ones. Advance planning will greatly reduce the trauma of downsizing to a smaller home. Do your research and figure out exactly where you'd like to move before selling your existing home. Sometimes it's a good idea to move into your new living situation before selling your existing home. That way you can conveniently prepare it to sell for the highest price possible. It also makes it easier to dispose of unwanted personal property. Many senior housing situations have waiting lists. By deciding where you want to move
before you have to sell, you can choose the lifestyle option that will make you the most happy. Then, while waiting for your new place to become available, you can prepare your home for sale. You'll be ready to put it on the market when the time comes to move. Get lots of help when you're downsizing your home and don't try to do it all by yourself. This is the time to call on family and close friends for assistance. And be sure to get good financial advice. Choose a good real estate agent who can help coordinate the sales process, assist with the property enhancement, and put you in touch with packers, movers and repair people. QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: When you're thinking of downsizing to a smaller home, here are some important questions to ask. • Does your home provide the best environment for the physical needs you have? • Are you having trouble performing the routine maintenance of your large home? • Is it difficult finding workers and service people to help you take care of your existing home? • Is your home isolating your from friends who already moved to a smaller home? • Are finances keeping you from enjoying the home you've loved for so many years? • Do you feel you have adequate security where you are? • Do you feel you have proper access to medical care in your present home? HINT: It may not always be possible to time your move to coincide with the most favorable market conditions. But, if you can choose when to sell, it's better to downsize in a seller's market. You'll pay a bit more for your new home than you would in a softer market. But, since you're selling a more expensive home in the same market, you'll come out dollars ahead.

I love colour! And everyone who knows me know that fall is my favourite time of year. I love the fresh breeze (with no humidity) and the vibrant fall colours that are everywhere in the countryside. I love decorating a seasonal table, whether it's simple or ornate, the visual appeal comforts me. Centerpieces don't always have to go on a dining or kitchen table, you can place them on your coffee table, hall table or even your mantel. Here's some inspiration for you:
Want an easy way to add a pop of colour to your table?
This colourful autumn wreath display is a great addition to the already popular hurricane vase. You can enjoy this look, not just for Thanksgiving but, for an everyday look through fall.. The hurricane vase makes this a safer alternative than tapered candles for your table display; place the leaves outside the vase and tucked just below and sides of base plate to ensure no melted wax touches the leaves.
With the temperatures dropping, texture and rich jewel tones replace showy blooms and vibrant colours as the mainstays of autumn accessorizing. Update your rooms with dazzling foliage, seasonal pumpkins and fruits, textured fabrics, patterns and the warm colours of the season. If you like the simplicity of tall candles, try adding autumn leaves (real or artificial) along the table for a relaxed and casual look. Decorative Table Display Ideas :
Showcase the full range of fall colours. Achieve a modern look by placing some in tall vintage jars or rest a few in modest glass compotes with their grassy tops exposed for texture and shape. Their deep red and yellow colour looks especially rich atop dark wood and antique furniture.
Add some filler to vases, trays and bowls that you already have around the house. You can also add ribbon, bushels of wheat, acorns, dried corn, assorted nuts in the shell (chestnuts, walnuts, etc), flowers or gourds to add some great texture and colour. It’s an inexpensive decorating accessory that can work throughout November and into December. If you're not into the garland on the table, you can opt for a leaf option. For the holidays, swap the nuts for cranberries.

Entertaining friends and family? Want to display an elegant fall living room?
Clear off tables and one or two shelves on bookcases or built-ins to provide spots for guests to place glasses and plates. Group hurricane lanterns in the fireplace opening; they give off a warm glow without the heat or hazard of an open fire in a room full of people. Replace a bulky coffee table with multiple cocktail-sized tables, which take up less floor space and can be easily moved. Replace one or two pictures with an autumn wreath or place a colourful wreath on the inside of your living room window to bring in some of the fall colours into the room.. No fireplace?
No problem. Add a side table or sofa table against a wall. Scatter some fall leaves on the surface. Place a group of different height candles; preferably in hurricane vases for safety. Add a few acorns and you have a great display for your guests. Colourful Autumn Vignette
Exhibit freshly cut foliage in vintage bottles. Maple leaves stay fresh for up to three weeks. Fill bottles with tepid water, and then cut the bottom of the branches on an angle. To help them take in water, use a sharp knife to slice up the middle of each branch about an inch. Replace the water when it becomes murky.

Want to be adventurous? You can continue the warming trend by covering bare floors with a thick wool rug in a cranberry hue; flip it over for a vintage needlepoint look or place it plush side up for a luxurious feel underfoot.

Cosy up bedrooms with toasty-warm wool blankets, sumptuous velvet pillows and striped bedding in brown shades from beige to chocolate. Chamomile-coloured walls ensure a sunny feel during grey winter days and are neutral enough to work with most decorating schemes. Add a little life with a quirky gooseberry wreath and a small pitcher of wildflowers bedside.
Neutral Console Table Display
Press pretty fall leaves and display them in vintage frames of various sizes. Unify different frames by painting them white or gold, and then wrap any existing mats with linen in earthy neutral tones. (Wrap the linen snugly around the mats and secure at back with glue or doublesided tape. Then, cut an X from corner to corner across the picture opening and fold the resulting triangles of fabric back and affix to the mat.)
Set a classic fall table with linens, dishes and accessories in these rich hues. This timeless combination confers elegance and provides the perfect backdrop for a harvest centrepiece of pumpkins, gourds and decorative kale. Create tiers to give the display visual interest: stack larger pumpkins and gourds on a cake platter, perch the kale in shallow bowls of water and scatter mini pumpkins on the table. Keep it simple. Showcase a natural wheat sheaf.
