Your Job Search Guide By: John Parsons A recent reader asked ffo or help staying ffo ocused and was becoming discouraged after aap pplying fo for numerous jobs. She wanted to know if there was a straategy she should be applying to end up up in her ideal job. Job searching is tough. It can be a drain. It is definitely exhausting. All too often job seekers get down and feel they are lost in a large process they have no control over. er. One thing I have witnessed over the years is that people tend to ‘lose their way’ along the path to employment and this starts to impact how they apply ffo or jobs and indeed often results in them taking positions they do not like. When coaching job seekers I often recommend a couple of basic exercises. They seem fairly simplistic but the eff ffeect can have fairlly significant results. The first question I ask is where they ultimately see themselves. What job do they truly want? It is important to write it down. It may be a long term goal but it is important to start by writing it down. Pu utt a time ffra rame on it. When do you want to end u up p in this job? Then work backwards. Detail what you need to do to get ffrrom now to then. What has to be done or accomplished in order to get there? Y Yo ou have to be as specific as possible. W Wrrite these steps down. Then next to each step, what do you need to accomplish them? What training should you take? What resources do you need to call upon? Who can help you accomplish these goals. Once you have determined the specific goals and what you need to accomplish them, put a time ffra rame on them. List your goals and time ffra rames in sequence, starting with what needs to be done first. Now break each goal or step into smallerr, more manageable steps. Let’s say ffo or example you need to get a diploma in Office Administration. The course takes 1 year to finish. What do you need to do to get into that course? First, identiffy a program you would like to take. Then you’ll need to find a school. Perhaps you’ll need to save the needed fun funds or apply ffo or a loan or other ffun unding. Yo You may need to talk to you current employer about a modified workk schedule to accommodate your studies. Ta Taking care of each of these is a small step towards the larger goal. Again, write these down and put a im t e fra frame on them. Beffore too long, the large goals or dreams we
have seem a lot more manageable and not so distant. The trick however is to start today. Start today and make a commitment that every day you will accomplish at least one thing that will take you towards your ultimate goal. It w wiill take a lot of self discipline but beffore long you will begin to see a snowball eff ffeect. The more you get done the more you want to get done and what you have only seen as a dream job or liffes estyle will be one step closer to becoming a reality. Develop a personal b‘ usiness plan..’ Pu Putt tim t e frames on it. Hold yourself accountable and where you may have ffeelt lost in the quest ffo or your dream job you wi will start to realize that you hold a lot more power than yo you thought!
