Let’s talk business After having been on the water of the magnificient St.Lawrence or doing gardening & landscaping most of my summer, I now feel well rested, and ready for business! As you can see my column is back and me as well! I wish to thank my team who is taking care of business while I am away. As business owners we’re never too far, but it is nice to be able to leave with peace of mind.
The everyday events that take place in a typical business -- home-based or not -- can quickly fill up your schedule.
Instead of "trying" to do the things you want to do, schedule firm appointments to do these things instead.
Start your workday the same way every day. Create a routine around starting your workday.
Of course, some business routines are better than others. Here are some routine tips for creating a routine that can bring you success rather than failure:
For example, you may make a pot of coffee, check your e-mail and voice-mail messages, read The Easyfinder, and then begin making sales calls. Ha!
Establish a regular work schedule. Maintain regular business hours just as you would if you were working for a regular business.
You decide what to do in your business routine; the point is to have a routine and to follow it.
It doesn't matter if you decide to work from 9 to 5 or from 5 to 9, so long as your schedule meets your needs and the needs of your clients and customers. As the owner of your own small business, you get to decide! Take plenty of short breaks. When you work in a regular business, you have lots of opportunities to take breaks from your business routine. A phone call from a friend, a visit from a vendor, a lunch break with your associates, or a quick walk to a nearby deli -- all offer a break from the routine.

Just as you would schedule an appointment to meet with a client, schedule an appointment to meet with your spouse over lunch or go for a walk.
End your workday the same way every day. So many businesspeople complain about not having enough time to sit down and really think ahead and to plan, but few do anything about it. Here's your chance to do just that. At the end of your workday, take 15 minutes to go over what happened that day and then review your priorities and schedules for the next day. File away any papers that need filing, and straighten up your desk so that you come back to an organized workspace on your next day of work.
If you work at home, such breaks are much fewer and farther between, and you have to make a point of taking them.
If you feel that your work life -- and maybe even your personal life -- is chaotic and out of control, perhaps you should take a step back for a moment and think about starting good routines!

Get Your Home Ready for Fall Cooler temperatures and pretty soon falling leaves serve as a reminder that the fall season is fast approaching. As the seasons change, so do our activities and home needs. Even though summer is not quite over yet, it’s a good time to do some seasonal maintenance to keep your home running smoothly. The weather can change quickly, and you don’t want to be caught unprepared. A bit of attention now will save costly repairs and aggravation later.

Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly.
Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace seals and repair caulking around window and door frames. Consider buying heavier or insulated drapery for especially drafty windows.
Replace old filters and clean inside compartment. Vinegar is inexpensive and works well.
• Have your furnace inspected.
• Do a roof check.
Hire an HVAC professional to test for leaks, check heating efficiency, and change the filter. They can also do a carbon monoxide check to ensure air safety. It’s also a good idea to stock up on extra air filters and change them every few months.
• Winterize air conditioning.
If your home has central air conditioning, it may be necessary to cover your outdoor unit for winter. If you use window air conditio-

Depending on your climate, your irrigation system may need to be drained and checked. Have a professional perform any necessary repairs and mark sprinkler heads near snow removal areas. Check for damaged limbs that may break or that are too close to power lines or the roof. Cut back bushes, shrubs, and flowers as recommended.
• Bring in flowerpots.
If you keep plants or flower in pots yearround, bring them inside. If you replace plants every year, empty, clean, dry pots and put away for next spring.
• Plant bulbs.
If you plant bulbs for spring, now’s the time to get them in the ground.
• Fertilize lawn.
Applying fall lawn fertilizer will help prevent winter damage and spring weeds. Ask a local garden center about it. Slowly put away seasonal furniture and get ready for another season!
