Choosing Your Pet Are You Ready? Sometimes, choosing a pet to bring into the family is a long and well-thought out process. Other times, a straggly, forlorn little ball of fur shows up on our doorstep and it has chosen us! (watch for the latter, as these are more often than not, a gift from the Angels) Either way, your life will change now. Mostly for the better! What type of pet were you not aware you were looking for? Dogs have definitely earned the title of 'man's best friend', but do you have extra time available in your life right now, for a four-legged best friend? If you've always wanted a snake as a pet, among other requirements, you must ask yourself if you will be able to feed it the way it needs to be fed. You'll need to have a strong stomach to feed a snake, especially if you think of mice and rats as potential pets as well. But on the plus side, think of the time you'll save in grooming and taking it outside for walks! If your new pet is to be a baby of its species remember, all babies from every species require extra time and care and it must be provided. Sometimes, a better choice for a busy lifestyle is a pet that's already gone through its baby phase and basic training. If there's a new (human) baby in the house, or on the way, it's the worst time to bring in a puppy or kitten or bunny rabbit, or any new pet really, as your time and focus will be prioritized and consumed with the human baby.

hugs per day. Never assign vital requirements such as food and water duties to someone too young to understand its importance. Chances are however, that you, yes you, the responsible one reading this, will be the one person ending up caring for this new life. Remember, bringing a pet into your world means you've taken total responsibility to feed, love and care for it, for its ~entire~ lifespan. Your pet must rely on you 100%! In addition to the emotional room in your heart, you'll need to make physical room for your new pet in your house. When I was seven, I begged my parents to buy me a baby elephant. Wisely, they explained that the elephant would quickly grow out from that 'cute, cuddly phase' and simply wouldn't fit in our home. I was grateful months later, when pooper scooping after my new German Shepherd was quite task enough. Every living species needs time and care from its human. Some more, others less. It's important to take on this responsibility within the limits of what you have available for time and resources. Not just for the next few months, but for years to come. Remember, lifespans in pets range from about two years for a hamster to about 75 years for a parrot! Make choosing this new family member a fun and exciting time for the whole family to learn about the needs of a different species and our chosen responsibilities and abilities, as its caretaker.
This includes small pets you think won't require much care. Even a goldfish needs to have his water bowl changed every day or two. (A task I wouldn't assign except to the most responsible person in the house) Properly cared for, your goldfish has a longer lifespan than a dog so even acquiring a pet fish deserves a very thorough and thoughtful decision.
What our pets return to us in unconditional love, complete acceptance, understanding, undying loyalty and just plain making us laugh and feel good, goes a long, long way for us to be willing to make the needed adjustments.
Assign each human in the family an age appropriate task for caring for the new pet. ie: Your five year old, must give it 5 'gentle'
