How to Get Unstuck From Constipation Woes. Feeding your pet an enjoyable, speciesappropriate, balanced diet is key to a healthy elimination system. However, occasionally your pet may suffer from simple constipation. In this case, there are easy solutions to keeping your pet's bowels moving along. Remember, there are many reasons why a pet may become constipated, some are as simple as not enough water in the diet, (in hot weather pets need extra water!) others may be serious. If these remedies don't work, don't wait any longer, it could be a condition which needs your Veterinarian's immediate attention. How do you know if your pet is constipated? Tell-tale signs are straining and either nothing comes out or just a tiny amount after great effort. He may go off his food. He may hunch over, look uncomfortable, show a lack of energy, or even look depressed. Some cats become constipated by retaining their waste, refusing to use a dirty litter box. They aren't trying to be difficult. If you were designated a small box to poop in, how would you feel if it were already filled with urine and feces? Cats are very clean animals with a much stronger sense of smell than ours! Wouldn't we ALL prefer to use a clean toilet? Hoping you can wait 'just one more day' before cleaning the litter box may result in forcing your cat to hold it in or use 'anywhere else' as their bathroom. It's not worth it! Other cats may not relieve themselves in unfamiliar surroundings. (a lot of people are like that too!) Some cannot get their bowels moving because they aren't moving enough themselves! An older cat may need a little extra encouragement to get up and move around to have the needed exercise or play for healthy, bowel-movements. A new, intriguing cat-specific toy may help motivate her. If you still feed one of those dry, kibbled foods at least add some wet food to it daily, especially for cats who unlike dogs, will drink very little water from a stagnant bowl. Moisture is very important to keep constipation at bay. You can also add a little pureed, or finely chopped, green leafy vegetables daily to your pet's diet. If hesitant, add a spot of butter to get them

started. A few spoons from a baby food jar of organic green beans or squash are excellent and easy, time-saving additions! You can mix in a tsp of coconut oil into food or if solidified, just drop same amount down in front of your pet as I haven't met a pet yet that doesn't LOVE coconut oil! (Give regularly to cats instead of hairball petroleum, or mineral oil, works excellently and is much healthier!)

Easy fixers for simple constipation, use one only: Add plain, canned 100% pumpkin to your pet's meal (not the pie filling!) One tsp. per 10pds. You can feed a 1/4 -1 tsp of Aloe Vera juice along with a few drops of liquid Chlorophyll mixed in with your pet's food. This works as a very gentle laxative as well as an internal cleanser. Sprinkling 1/4 tsp Slippery Elm(health food store) in their food or making a slurry from it (follow directions on package) will help the constipated tummy tremendously. Probiotics in the form of a small bowl of Kefir will help the tummy's internal flora balance. Also, adding digestive enzymes to a meal every few days (or every day for an elderly cat) will also help clear up constipation. Never use 'human' laxatives, high fibre grains, or give a 'home' enema to your pet.

Constipation in birds is serious. Check to make sure the 'vent' area is clean and not blocked by stuck feathers, if blocked, very gently clean with warm water. Call your Avian Vet Specialist. Constipation in Rabbits and other prey animals, who never show signs of illness until very sick, can signal 'gastrointestinal stasis' which is an emergency and should be immediately handled by your Veterinarian.
