Are you worried about winter driving? Thinking about how unpredictable our Canadian winters can be? Take a load of your mind and get a winter check up with your local mechanic! Many problems occur when the weather gets colder and with the right advise and proper inspection of your vehicle a lot of aggravation and frustration can be avoided. A winter check up should consist of first: a battery test, our batteries generate electric current, when there is a voltage supply demand a chemical reaction is initiated, current is directly effected by temperature. So when the thermostat drops our batteries are working harder to produce the extra current it usually doesn’t have to supply in warmer weather, so if a battery is already weak it may be able to supply enough current at normal temperatures but will not when the temperature drops. So always get your battery tested so your wont be left stranded. Second: Tires, there is a difference between all season tires and winter tires. There both made of rubber. But a different compound, most people fail to realize that the compound of your all season tire get very hard in freezing temperatures and that it's more like a hockey puck and not sticking to the road surface anymore. Winter tires are formulated to stay soft and sticky in freezing temperatures so
they can continue to grip the road surface. That is coolant it should be between 35-50’c.
