Snow plowing If you choose to hire a contractor to plow your driveway this winter, make sure you get your money's worth and the level of service you expect. Picking the right contractor starts with doing some homework. Ask friends or family members for names of companies they have had a good experience with. Obtain several quotes from candidates to clear your driveway and gauge the range of prices. Once you find a contractor you like, there are details to work out. If you don't resolve those ahead of time, you could face more costs or complications once the snow flies. Always have a signed contract, and look at the details. Clarify whether the service is limited to a certain number of visits per season, and what price you will pay beyond that number to have your driveway cleared. Another question to get answered is how much snow must fall before the contractor will come to clear it. Have the contractor visit your property to check it out, especially if your driveway has an unusual layout or your property has landscaping to be mindful of. Contractors might find those visits beneficial, as well, to determine how his trucks will remove snow in a way that will keep both the customer and their neighbors happy.

If you need to have your snow cleared by a certain time in order to drive to work, have that written into your contract. If the driveway is still blocked by the time you have to leave, you are not truly getting your money's worth. Make sure the contract contains the operator's name, address -- not a post office box number -- and phone number. Also ask to see the contractor's driver's license, and copy down the address and identification number. Record the license plate number of the vehicle that plows your driveway, too. The payment schedule is another important issue to resolve. Paying in installments -- perhaps two or three -- rather than one, up-front lump sum is a good idea. Some contractors might insist on being paid in advance. "Only do that if you know and trust the business owner," If you do pay the full bill at once, use a credit card, to give yourself more protection if problems surface, or a check, Do not pay in cash. If the mild winter last season seemed to favor the contrators, in the form of little need for plowing, remember the situation has been reversed in other winters, with trucks constantly on the go. It’s the chance to take and have your driveway cleared out and more time to yourself no matter what the season reserves us!

Perhaps to you, THE WALK is just about getting your dog to relieve himself. But to your dog, there's a lot more to doing 'business', than just doing his business! Just as you like to get out, have fun, meet up with friends and get up to date with all the latest news in town, your dogs' walk is about all of that and more. Can you get all that done in under ten minutes? Of course not! You shouldn't expect that of your canine family member either. Of course, his well-being is important to you so, here are some tips to enhance the experience for you both.

The same as children have serious school time and 'after school time' for fun, there are times for training your dog, and times for just having a fun walk. Keep the two separate, and watch how much quicker your dog will learn in training, when he doesn't have to have his 'fun' time infringed upon. All those polite behaviours will naturally spill over to his fun, walk time. Always use a leash that is comfortable in your hand. Leather or one of the new, strong yet flexible materials far surpass chain link. With chain, not only can it hurt your hand, but you never know when one of the links has weakened until it just snaps, usually, at the worst possible time! If the leash has a reflective quality that will increase the chance of being seen during one of our dark, cold evenings, all the better. Never choose one that flashes or strobes as that is highly disorienting for your dog, not to mention unpleasant for your own eyes. No matter what size or breed, every dog needs and deserves, 'THE WALK' and for it, a six-foot long leash, minimum. 4ft. leads

First, commit to it. You brought this dog into your family and as with any other family member, by doing that you accepted all the responsibilities of that precious life. Choose this time as your special bonding time. Talk to him, praise him! Get caught up in the anticipation and excitement of having as good a time as your dog plans to have! You're going on an adventure!

and less, are just not enough room between you and your dog to allow your dog the enjoyability factor of the walk. For a small dog, you'll need four feet of the lead just in what it takes to go from your hand to the ground. He'll need at least another two feet of ground move-ability to get what he needs out of the walk. For any size dog, one of those retractable 10, 15 or 25ft leads are ideal. They give maximum moveability to your dog while giving you minimum exertion, as long as you keep 'polite protocol' in mind. This means when coming up to a person or another dog, unless you are already acquainted, you must retract the lead so your dog is back at your side. Keep your dog's safety in mind if you are close to traffic, and never allow the extended leash to let him unexpectedly run out into the street. To your dog, his walk is about quality 'you and him' time, sniffing at every good thing he encounters (which gives him the latest town gossip) scouting out the best place to relieve himself with a message that says, 'Fido was HERE!' And if he's really lucky, maybe meeting up with a new friend. Please always pick up his excrement. Never make him carry his poop or attach it to his collar. This is unnatural, even cruel. He gave you the gift. It's yours to carry! :-) Truth is, your dog will unconditionally love you no matter how short or long your walks are~ no matter how much or how little attention, good or bad you give him. This is why dogs have been Human's most loyal, loving 'best-friend' for many thousands of years.... There are few things as precious to your canine family member than the long-awaited 'walk'. Giving him enough time to enjoy it without the 'bah-humbug' attitude, is the best year-round gift you could ever give him. A happy, content canine is the best Doggie-Parent gift you could ever give yourself!
