The Key to a Successful Leadership - Patrick Alain

Leadership skills can be acquired over time. It is possible to develop the qualities that make up a successful leader. It is a wellknown fact that true leaders are never satisfied with their own selves and are always on the lookout for opportunities to grow. In order to improve leadership skills, it is necessary to concentrate on a few specific areas. Industry Leaders Magazine

Oct 2012

19

Many books have been written on the subject of leadership but most of them are too deep and are unable to clearly communicate the main principles required for effective leadership. When the subordinates work in tandem with no specific agenda, there is no fixed limit on the level of success. It is the responsibility of the leader to maintain a suitable atmosphere that is conducive

20

to the growth of the institution.

Vision: the Mark of a True Leader Every leader must have a follower. In order to follow, the followers first need to know be aware of where they are going. Only if the leader possesses a clear vision, can he explain it to the others.

Industry Leaders Magazine

The followers must be inspired by the vision of their leader and feel motivated to assist him in making that vision a reality. Every one of the followers needs to be involved in the process of development. This will enable the leader to focus on the method of achieving that vision. Strategy is not likely to be of much use unless there is a clear vision of the fu-

ture along with the means necessary to reach there. It is in this case that the concept of values comes into play. A particular set of values acts as a foundation that all followers need to embrace in order to make the decision-making process much simpler and point out the right direction. If the vision is compatible with the values, the leader can proceed; if not, progress is hampered.

Communicating the central values and vision is important on a regular basis since it will turn out to be a driving force in the future. Attitude of the Leader and the Impact Attitudes can have long-lasting impact. The attitude of a leader will be reflected on his followers; if negative, the followers will feel depressed and if positive, the followers will be happy by the attitude of the leader. So, no matter what the situation, a good leader should always consider the impact of his response. Leadership is mostly about influence. Every leader is bound to influence his followers in some way or the other. Most leaders should try and influence people in the direction of his vision. The way in which the leader conducts himself lets the people know whether they can count on him or not. They find faith to believe in him. Their belief in the leader is even more strengthened when they witness

that what the leaders says, he actually does. Maintaining a good attitude helps build respect, trust and credibility among the leader and the follower.

and good leaders always come up with ways to juggle their personal and professional life.

Hard Work Always Pays Off This may seem to be some kind of a clichÊ but there really is no alternative to hard work. Most of the successful leaders never slacked off – they worked hard in the beginning, the middle and the close of their career. Many have been known to come into work early and leave after almost everyone else. Additional responsibilities have been thrust upon them. Leaders have always welcomed task forces and special assignments. They have never searched for shortcuts and have never tried to push challenging work in the direction of others. And, in the end, they have been rewarded for their diligence, tenacity and patience. This just goes to show that hard work is the basis of a successful leadership. But in the course of hard work, even leaders should make time for some fun. This will not only boost his popularity with the followers but also bring them closer together. Leaders should keep an eye out for any opportunity that fosters a sense of support and family. Building an environment that people actually enjoy will ensure that they feel good about coming in every day and making a contribution to another person’s future. Balance is the key. Most successful leaders seem to be single-mindedly focused on their profession. But beneath that layer of resolve and determination, lies a person who has other interests in life. Sometimes, one area needs to be shut off completely in order to focus on the other. But these instances are rare

give proper recognition to and support bright ideas. Instead of worrying about whether they came from him or not, a proper leader considers whether the status quo has been challenged or not,

to the process of learning, especially from mistakes that have been committed by them. In order to learn, a leader should maintain an open mind, explore and listen.

Knowledge: the Key to Success

True leaders not only possess knowledge about their respective field, they are also aware about the important skills, behaviors and attribute that make up a successful leader.

or whether it is now the right time to experiment. There are some leaders who suffer from the notion that they possess all the answers they could possibly want. But, successful leaders never put a stop

They understand and appreciate the divide between management and leadership. They are also aware that this knowledge happens to only be a point of beginning; in order to realize how a true leader works, knowledge must be applied. Real leaders should be aware of their followers. They need to understand their source of motivation and de-motivation and then apply it accordingly to their relationships. Good leaders need to adapt their style continually in order to suit the needs of their followers along with the requirements of the task at hand. Knowledge may equate to power only partially; it is just potential power until the time it

is applied with integrity and humanity.

Connect and Conquer Leadership skills benefit from emotional intelligence and authenticity. When the leaders encourage others and demonstrate that they really care about their followers, they draw them closer in spite of obstacles and challenges. Communication also helps leaders to become more powerful by empowering others. Great leaders help others attain their full potential. Every single person commits mistakes and meets with disappointment. Successful leaders in varying fields of government, business and the professions are aware of their shortcomings and accept them fully. They are quick to learn from the mistakes they have made and move on. Those individuals who linger on mistakes or are extremely cautious

and rarely make missteps do not have the potential to turn out to be great leaders.

Choosing the right example of a successful leader happens to be something of a dilemma nowadays. Followers are confused regarding whether to look up to previous industrial giants or CEOs or political leaders or even reputed leaders from military history. Future and current leaders can gain an insight into how they can transform themselves into better and acclaimed leaders.

Every each of us experience presence of technology and machines which are becoming more and more visible in day-today business and economy. And even though some may think that those self service machines are quite convenient and fast at the same time, other will start thinking: “Does it mean that all of us will be replaced with robots at

ing the growing uncertainty among runof-the-mill.

These questions are perfectly natural, given the fact that more companies have been implementing technologies and robots to make their production and services more efficient and fast. For example, more companies decide to no longer have operators or secretaries answer phone calls, replacing them with automatic machines.

Andrew McAfee’s vision of the robotic future

And even though common people sometimes get irritated with this increasing automation of life, the fact is that all of us should get used to it. Technology is entering our lives and business more aggressively and it has already become the part of every-day life and reality. “Will robots take our jobs? Will droids will replace human workers?” – these questions have been repeated so many times in the last couple of years show-

Andrew McAfee, the world-known principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business in the MIT Sloan School of Management, studies the ways how information technologies affect businesses and economy as a whole. Andrew McAfee, a co-author of the book Race Against the Machine, holds a positive opinion on the future impact of automation on the economy. As he understands people’s feeling of uncertainty, he deeply believes that droids / robots will bring more good things than bad things to both companies and human civilization. The impact of digital technologies on workforce, however, is not so visible yet, according to Andrew McAfee. He

The strongly believes that in couple of years digital technologies will possess skills and abilities, which we can hardly imagine these days. And even though knowledge is hardly to automate we can forecast with high probability that digital technologies will be more and more intelligent with every single day. As he emphasized, common people and business should be ready to see digital technologies entering the physical world as well. A few of these digital technologies have already entered it, just to mention a Google self-driving car or robots used on the ground in the air by the military. “We thought human beings held the high ground in a lot of these areas. We looked around and suddenly saw computers doing things they weren’t supposed to be good at it ... We’re going to see computers, robots doing a lot of jobs that humans are holding today, “ he noted. And even though droids / robots are still primitive, these days research is being conducted so much quicker than even few years ago so we can expect artificially intelligent robots just in couple of years, as military departments all over the world invest significant amounts of money in the research labs. What we are experiencing these days can be compared to the Industrial Revolution (1750 – 1850). The revolution, which digital technologies are going through, will be at least so important as the Industrial Revolution or even more significant as the current process aims to overcome the “power of individual brains” while the XVIII/XIX one overcame the “power of human muscles”.

The introduction of technology in the business. Foxconn case Foxconn Technology Group, an electronic manufacturer from Taiwan, in 2011 decided to introduce more advanced technology into the production at its plants. The company, which generates as much as 40 percent of the global

consumer electronic revenue by creating devices such as Apple Inc.’s iPhone smartphones and also computers components, announced that it was planning to buy some robots to replace its human workers. You probably think: “Some robots? So how many 5? 10? 100?” No, the answer is one million robots. Foxconn Technology Group decided to buy one million robots over the next three years starting from 2011. So is Foxconn Technology Group preparing to replace human workforce with robots, given the fact that the company has been criticized because of suicides of its workers and issues regarding labor policies, including unsafe facilities and illegal amounts of overtime? Yet, it is still hard to imagine that Foxconn Technology Group would decide to re-

place the entirety of productions lines with robots. No, no yet. No one is prepared for this revolutionary step.

Pros & Cons of droid workforce TI executive Remi El-Ouazzane once said: “We have a firm belief that the robotics market is on the cusp of exploding.” Lately more droids / robots have been either still developed or already deployed in fields such as healthcare, production, warehousing and even defense, not to mention other sections. Droids / robots, which people are often threatened by, are not so “bad” as the human population think. Robots, increasingly, in the military potentially save hundreds of soldiers’ lives. Robots have already been introduced in industries, just to mention few – manufac-

The turing, retail or distribution, increase productivity. However there is also a dark side of the advanced technology, which is usually exaggerated once portrayed in science fiction movies showing robots so

intelligent and effective that they replace human workers. Yet the truth is that this process may start in the non-defined future. According to David Autor, an MIT economist, some jobs, however, will be quite safe for the foreseeable future. He believes that low-skilled and low-paying jobs like dog groomers, restaurant waits staff, gardeners, as well as high-skilled and high-paying jobs should be safe. However David Autor noted: “Technology doesn’t eliminate jobs altogether. And it does raise wealth. But it doesn’t always have a positive distribution ... We shouldn’t be worried that we’re going to run out of jobs, but we may not like all the jobs being created. It’s something

we should be paying attention to.”

The Utopian vision of the technology’s impact on human lives Andrew McAfee claims that people should not be afraid of the automation as digital technologies will enable us to focus on more important things such as poverty, famine, etc. Robots, which will be implemented by businesses within the lifetime of today’s young people, will free our minds. In addition, the work of innovations brings openness, inclusiveness and transparency which are so desired by people, according to him. The future will be better. Yet the transition, which is essential while going through today’s digital technologies’ revolution, will be challenging and painful to the society. Though, our minds will be freed to engage in more important and substantial ideas. However it must be highlighted that Andrew McAfee does not envision a workplace without human workers. He noted: “That’s still too science fiction. Don’t get me wrong. Technology grows the economic pie. Technology is not bad for the economy. It makes us more productive. It lets us grow more”. Certainly Andrew McAfee’s vision is utopian and idealistic. But who knows what the future will bring.

Yet in the statement of BAE Systems and EADS there was no specific detail on who would head the new company; the board seats would be shared even, 50:50. In addition, the new combined equity both BAE Systems and EADS will continue to have their own boards as well as executive committees.

British Concerns Regarding the BAE – EADS Merger Creating Europe’s biggest defense company requires not only approval of Germany, French and British governments, but other shareholders as well. This is, however, not a big surprise. Defence ministers from UK, Germany and France have been expected to discuss the planned merged equity. BAE Systems and EADS hope to obtain governments backing by the deadline of 10th of October. Yet in this case the proposed merger of BAE Systems and EADS has raised concerns in the U.K. that a main strategic company of the country would be controlled by foreign forces. Not to mention that there have been concerns that BAE System’s contracts supplying the U.S. defense sector could be threatened in case of the merger.

The BAE–EADS merger, however, is facing some regulatory hurdles. The deal will have to obtain regulatory approvals of the British government and Washington, which is the BAE’s biggest customer, as well as the support of the French and German administrations involved in EADS as well.

The U.K. government controls a golden share in BAE Systems, having the right to block any deal. At the beginning of the merger talks the U.K government has been said to favor the planned merger. Yet it should be highlighted that BAE Systems is involved in the U.K defence supply and national security. Therefore, the U.K. parliamentary defence committee has launched a new inquiry on the proposed merger. Moreover, the U.K government is concerned with the BAE System’s relationship with the Pentagon. One of the biggest customers of BAE Systems is indeed the

U.S. government, & the company has been working on classified defense contracts, including the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Boeing - A Strong Adversary of the BAE-EADS Merger The Boeing Co. has started to use its political pressure to stop the planned merger between BAE Systems & EADS, noting that the merged equity would pose U.S. security issues; therefore, it must be scrutinized with all possible determination. Dennis Muilenburg, head of Boeing Co.’s defence arm, said: “There are national security questions, industrial questions, & those will have to be dealt with a serious matter that needs to be scrutinized.” It is worth noting that Dennis Muilenburg’s comment differs substantially from previous remarks made by Jim McNerney, Chief Executive Officer at Boeing Co., who said that the planned merger would not “threaten us fundamentally”. The recent comment, however, shows that Boeing Co. could play a crucial role in lobbying against the BAEEADS merger. The proposed merger will put Boeing Co. in a difficult situation, if it is finalized. BAE Systems is one of its most reliable business partners and even it has been honored with an award of “supplier of the year” by the American giant. EADS, on the other hand, is the Boeing Co.’s biggest civilian rival. Therefore, the merger might potentially disrupt supply chain. BAE System supplies over 60,000 cockpit and cabin parts to Boeing Co. per year. The company has been recently chosen to build a special touchscreen controller for Boeing. This project is a part of a $51.7 billion defense contract won by Boeing Co. after years of competition with EADS. It should be also noted that BAE Systems also cooperates intimately with the U.S. big-

gest weapons producers. It works closely with, for example, Lockheed Martin Corp. on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter & a possible replacement for the U.S. Army’s so well-known Humvee trucks.

BAE-EADS merger’s outcomes The BAE – EADS merger is expected to overtake rival Boeing in sales & to contend with major defense cutbacks implemented in Europe & the United States as well. Experts hold an opinion that the proposed deal, which is the biggest since EADS was created in 2000, could start the wave of consolidation in the industry. BAE Systems’ officials said: “The potential combination would create a worldclass international aerospace, defense & security group with substantial centers of manufacturing and technology excellence in France, Germany, Spain, the UK and the USA.”

58

Oct 2012

The proposed merger would effectively and definitely put an end to division of control between French & German, replacing it with a golden shares system. Those golden shares would give its owners, namely governments of France, Germany & Great Britain, a right to block the deal using so-called veto, which would be useful either in case of a hostile takeover attempt or in deals involving sensitive national security assets. Certainly, the BAE - EADS merger would create the biggest integrated defense and commercial company with annual sales of approximately $92.4 billion, exceeding Boeing Co. by over than a third, based on 2011 data. Despite all public statements, Boeing Co. & other companies in the industry are aware of the potential power & possibilities of the proposed merger, which would have more resources at its disposal than either of the two separate companies these days. This predominance would probably result in putting the merger in the running bid for more ambitious & more profitable projects in the near future.

Destitation It might be exporting art work, production, finance business, chain of restaurants, importing something‌. Whatever your business idea is, there is always a place oversees where you can make it; pursue and develop your idea or just expand your existing business. But usually one will ask question: “Where is the best place to do it? Where should I move my company? Where should I open new headquarters of my company?â€? Even though some of entrepreneurs and businessmen say that they were inspired when they visited a place and they discovered the need, it is not always a good idea to make spontaneous (based on your impressions) decisions regarding the place of new headquarters of your company or your business in general. Yet, seeing an opportunity is important, you should, however, also consider other factors regarding the new place for your business as some countries or cities are said to be the best places to do business while other will just give you a headache.

Rankings of the Best Places to Do Business Existing rankings of the best and easiest places to do business are created, namely, for those who seek the opportunity of expanding their businesses but they are not sure where exactly to do it and which place gives countless opportunities to earn money, jus to say it in the simplest way. Certainly these rankings, including Bloomberg Rankings, Forbes Rankings and even rankings of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and the non-profit Partnership for New York City, etc., are pointers of some kind while searching for new best business destinations. While preparing these rankings institutions take into consideration many

factors, including costs of setting up business, hiring and moving goods, the degree of economic integration, inflation and corruption, the readiness of the local consumer base, the size of the middle class, household consumption and gross domestic product per person, intellectual capital and innovation; technology readiness; transportation and infrastructure; demographics, health safety and security, ease of doing business, etc. Someone may say: “Yeah rankings? So what? They ain’t have anything to do with a real life!” However if we look at the top leaders of rankings we will see countries and cities that are in fact successful. And success does not come from anything. John Wooden said once: “Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

Hong Kong – The City of Possibilities Hong Kong is one of those places to be said to be the best business destinations. And regardless of a ranking, the city always is among leaders. But this should be no surprise as Hong Kong is both a bastion of free-market policies and low corporate taxes. And according to many rankings, Hong Kong is definitely one of best places to do business as it is also the gateway to China itself. Yet 15 years ago no one was sure whether Hong Kong after returning to Chinese sovereignty would remain its role as an international financial centre. However companies, including General Electric Co., Gap Inc., etc., have decided to do business there, not to mention financial giants such as HSBC Holdings Plc which are listed on Hong Kong’s stock exchange. Certainly, both the city’s reputation for

Destitation rule of law and corruption-free administration have helped distinguish Hong Kong from the People’s Republic of China. Moreover, Hong Kong as an integral part of China has remained some of its economies freedoms; it can negotiate and sign its own economic and trade agreements and it is a full member of international organizations such as WTO and APEC. Tomo Kinoshita, deputy head of Asia economics research at Nomura Holdings Inc. highlighted the importance of the city by saying: “Hong Kong is a gateway to China, it has competitive tax rates and that makes it one of the natural choices for companies to set up their Asian headquarters. It makes sense for companies that want to be close to China as well as the rest of Asia to use Hong Kong as their base.”

Strengths of Hong Kong Hong Kong, the world’s 9th largest economy, provides an extremely stable as well as efficient business environment alongside with modern infrastructure and telecommunications. Hong Kong’s economy is said to be the most laissez faire economy all over the world as the government strictly avoid any kind of interventionism. Moreover controls and disclosure requirements on businesses are minimal, except for public limited companies. Private companies need to meet minimal capitalization requirements. If a company wants to incorporate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, no financial statements are needed to be filed. Because of the fact that Hong Kong’s economy is unsurpassed, local and foreign companies are brought together into a single business community. The ongoing interactions between local and foreign companies in the city makes Hong Kong’s business environment full of growth opportunities as it creates possibilities of international networks, finding new sources

of supply or new markets, developing relations with business partners from Honk Kong, China and elsewhere as well. The results of an annual survey, which was released by Invest Hong Kong and the Census and Statistics Department in October 2011, showed that the total number of foreign and Mainland Chinese parent companies running business operation in the city had hit the highest record to date. According to compiled data, by June 2011, the total number of overseas companies with operations in Hong Kong grew 5.9 percent compared to 2010, to 6,948. The most noticeable growth was demonstrated in finance and banking sector, accordingly, regional headquarters in this field jumped by 5 percent, to 135, while local offices grew by 3 percent to 622.

66

Complied data also showed that approximately half of the parent companies came from four countries, including the United States with 1,263 firms, Japan with 1,085, and Mainland China with 789, followed by the United Kingdom with 505. Certainly, Hong Kong is the best place to do business as so many companies have their offices there which enable them to develop relations with potential business partners. Simon Galpin, Director-General of Investment Promotion, noted: “Hong Kong is the perfect base from which to access Mainland China. At the same time, Mainland companies are also using Hong Kong as a springboard from which to go global. Hong Kong, without a doubt, is the best business destination at the same due to its simple tax system and low

tax rate. Free follow of information, corruption-free administration, and lack of exchange controls as well as political stability make Hong Kong the best place to do business. However, there also few negative sides of the city, including the fact that housing and office stock is limited because Hong Kong is densely populated. The cost of business space and the cost of living are very high. According to data compiled by DTZ, office locations in Hong Kong are one of the most expensive all over the world.

Hong Kong and Singapore rivalry Hong Kong and Singapore have been competing for a long time to get the title of Asian best place to do business. Both Hong Kong and Singapore have been luring overseas businesses to invest and open their headquarters using tax friendly policies, excellent infrastructure

and easy company incorporation procedures, etc. Hong Kong, however, has a longer history as a financial centre and a centre for business in general. But do not be mistaken by that fact. Singapore has been working to undermine the dominant position of the Hong Kong as the best place to do business for a long, long time. The government of Singapore makes everything into its power to attract foreign investors by quickly adopting business friendly policies. Probably the rivalry between Hong Kong and Singapore would not end soon; we should be prepared for the long war to gain the dominance in the Asia. However we should remember Prince Charles’ words that “Hong Kong has created one of the most successful societies on Earth.” By paraphrasing it we shall say without any hesitation: “Hong Kong has created one of the most successful places to do business on Earth.”

A yacht the symbol of luxury Owning a yacht is considered a symbol of luxury. Some would say that there is no greater symbol of wealth than a gleaming, glamorous and luxurious yacht. Industry Leaders Magazine

And certainly some yachts are playing role of ultimate toys for its owners who do not just want to use them for recreation, but to show off their wealth and style at the same time. Those luxurious yachts are tailored for their owners’ needs, tastes, exact specifications to offer them privacy and comfort as well. New zones and methods for spending one’s exotic and luxurious vacations have been explored, yet the sea still is considered a leading spot for elite’s time off. Private luxury yachts are believed to be favorite vehicles for vacations and socializing within the high class. And what is more is that the owning a vacation house has become lately passé. If you want to be jazzy you should invest in yacht as this vehicle is not only mobile, but it can entertain your family members and socialites, not to mention that it is simply the symbol of ultimate luxury.

72

Oct 2012

The short history of yacht and yachting The yacht was initially a lightweight Dutch naval vessel. Originally yachts were used to pursue pirates and to explore new lands and unchartered waters especially in the 17th century as they were fast and nimble. The yacht became a symbol of luxury when King Charles II decided to sail in one of those on his return to England.

Since then yacht has started to be considered a symbol of luxury, wealth & importance as well.

Industry Leaders Magazine

Today’s yachts are not basic vessels as they used to be in the past. Contemporary yachts are usually equipped with every modern convenience so that its owner is able to check stocks, make conference calls and even organize a merger if necessary. The increase safety, equipment and technology implemented in today’s luxurious yachts are aimed to give its users the comfort and feeling of indulgence. And the tradition of believing that yacht is the symbol of wealth did not quite disappear, in fact is it is still alive and is keeping quite well. Yacht the symbol of luxury is best demonstrated by the most expensive yachts in the world, including No.1 on the list - the Eclipse.

Eclipse the most expensive yacht The Eclipse is believed to be the world’s most expensive yacht. It is owned by the well-know Russian billionaire Ro-

man Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club. Roman Abramovich, who is the richest man in Russia, decided to add one more expensive “marine” toy to its whole collection of toys consisting of the Luna - a 377-foot ice boat, a Boeing 767, houses located in London, St. Barts, Colorado, Sardinia and France as well. The Eclipse has been owned by Roman Abramovich since December 2010. Eclipse, the world’s most expensive and largest yacht, has dimensions of 162.5m length, perpendiculars of 147m, 21.5m breadth and 5 m draught, which give its owner a huge area of private luxury on the deck. The Eclipse had been built by Blohm + Voss Shipyards. And even though the word’s most expensive yacht was launched in June 2009 it was delivered to its owner over one year after that, in December 2010. It had taken almost 5 years of design, development and testing to build this ultimate symbol of lux-

Project Luxury Yacht 147”.

The symbol of power, luxury and wealth, the Eclipse, had been designed by Hermidas Atabeyki of Atabeyki Design Development, while its exterior and interior styling had been projected by Terence Disdale Design and Greenline Yacht Interiors. The naval architecture of the Eclipse, which happens to be also the biggest private yacht in the world, was provided by Blohm + Voss as the super structure of the Eclipse was looked into by Terence Disdale Design. And as all very, very rich people want, the secrecy was maintained by naming the project “

But probably now you are thinking: “Ok, there are writing that it is the most expensive yacht in the world. But the heck, how much is it worth?!” Initially the Eclipse would cost “only” $420.000.000, but many changes, which were implemented, increased the price tag to approximately $1.200.000.000. Indeed it is a quite amount of money for some kind of boat. Yet the Eclipse you cannot call some kind of boat, it is a yacht that completely fulfils all signs of the symbol of contemporary wealth and luxury.

said to be armor-plated and fitted with bulletproof glass, which was also used while building the bridge. The Roman Abramovich’s master bedroom is also equipped with devices which allow opening the roof so that the owner of the world’s most expensive yacht can sleep under the stars. Missile detection systems and anti-paparazzi systems were installed also to ensure the safety of the owner and his guests. And someone can think that missile detection systems can be a slight exaggeration of needs; however it is certainly a pretty much expensive toy. Yet no one can be surprised that anti-paparazzi systems were put there as neither Roman Abramovich nor his wealthy and known acquaintances want to be shot by intrusive and at time aggressive paparazzi. However the anti-paparazzi systems will not be permanently activated so Roman Abramovich’s friends will be able to take few photos while being on the deck. As you can imagine, this afloat “castle” can be very costly when it comes to its maintenance. The Eclipse is serviced by a crew of 70 who are needed to operate the yacht full time and it What does it take to be positioned on the costs $60 million per year to keep up her. 1st place on the most expensive yachts? The Eclipse has 11 guest cabins and each one of them is equipped with a six-foot movie screen. Moreover the most expensive yacht in the world has two helipads and two swimming pools as well, not to mention several hot tubs. Rumors have been circulating that the Eclipse is also equipped with a submarine that can dive to a depth of 160 feet. And a surprise, the larger one of swimming pools can be drained and converted to a dance floor, sic!

anonymous Malaysian businessman for the amount of incredible €3.4 billion as it was supposedly made of solid gold. What is more interesting that the master bedroom of History Supreme was supposedly adorned in platinum, decoreated with meteoric stone and the bones of a Tyrannosaurus Rex sic! However, Baia Yachts of Italy first announced that the story about the £3 billion golden super yacht was faked. According to Mario Borselli, sales manager at Baia, the company which spread news on the yacht covered in gold and diamonds had used images of Baia website without permission and photoshopped it without any further approval.

So the title of the world’s most expensive yacht still belongs to the Eclipse, the symbol of contemporary luxury and wealth, owned by Roman Abramovich. Industry Leaders Magazine

No one is willing to invest in work machines, features or components that endanger productivity, so testing is of paramount importance before any customer deliveries take place,” says Tuomas Saastamoinen, Sales and Marketing Director for Port Cranes at Konecranes. “In 2008 we decided to build a full-scale test site for container handling equipment on our own premises in Hyvinkää, Finland. The test site was taken into use in spring 2009. The structure and load-carrying capacity of the 115 x 40 meter site have been designed and dimensioned in the same way as a typical port terminal field. The ground can carry a wheel load of 30 tons, and there is enough room for all necessary container handling equipment. In addition to a real-size cable-reel RTG, there are containers and an office building equipped with data transmission connections that enable testing activities carried out by remote control. For safety reasons, the test site has been fenced off and

equipped with a safety system to guarantee that no unauthorized trespassers can enter the premises,” explains Konecranes’ Director of Port Technology Hannu Oja. The test site was first utilized to test a customer delivery of cable-reel RTGs to Russia. The testing was fully carried out, and by now a total of 20 cable reeled RTGs have successfully been delivered and commissioned to Russia and Turkey. All the cranes are in continuous use and provide excellent performance. Building of a full-scale test site is quite rare within the crane industry, but according to Saastamoinen, Konecranes takes testing of its products very seriously and wanted to invest a considerable amount of money in setting up the site to test not only the product concerned, but also the entire port environment.

IndiGo is built for people with things to do, places to be, people to see - who don’t want to waste time, money or energy in the process. By minimizing the cost/time/ tension of air travel, IndiGo opens up a country full of opportunities. With IndiGo, you’ve got a billion reasons to fly! IndiGo incorporates the best hardware, software, interface design & personnel from around the world. The IndiGo team uses all of these resources to design processes and rules that are safe and simple, that make sense, and that cut waste and hassles, which in turn ensures a uniquely smooth, seamless, precise, gimmick-free customer experience at fares that are always affordable. IndiGo focuses on doing one thing, and doing it well. IndiGo is an anomaly in the Indian market – it is the only profitable domestic airline this financial year (ending 31-Mar-2012). The carrier is however, like its peers, feeling the pressure in a tough operating environment. President Aditya Ghosh this month noted the carrier would see a decline in FY2012 profits, with the results substantially impacted by high fuel costs. “Margins were under huge pressure because average price of fuel is now higher than what it was in 2009. There has been a growth in revenue and we will turn out to be profitable at end of the year. It will be much smaller profit than we have done in the previous year,’’ he said in an interview with a Business magazine. The carrier reported an 18% increase in profit to INR6.5 billion (USD130 million) in FY2011 but expects the FY2012 result to be a “fraction” of this figure. “For us profitability means that we are able to get spare parts on time, pay salaries on time, maintain integrity of schedules and plan for growth,” he stated. IndiGo co-founder Rahul Bhatia confirmed the LCC “will end the year making money”. He also dismissed comments made by Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya that the only profitable airlines in the Indian market are the ones conducting sale-

As confirmed by India’s Minister of Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh on 22-Mar-2012, all scheduled Indian airlines except IndiGo are incurring losses, based on returns filed by airlines with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Despite only entering the market less than six years ago in Aug-2006, IndiGo has rapidly soared up the ranks to become the second largest domestic carrier, overtaking Air India and Kingfisher Airlines on the way. In doing so, IndiGo has overtaken more well-established carriers that have expanded not only organically but through acquisitions and with a mixed-product that offers both full service and low cost products. growth for IndiGo is expected to continue, with the airline likely to remain the fastest growing airline in India in 2012, as it continues to add capacity on both domestic and international routes, with the latter expected to generate a growing proportion of total revenue. IndiGo held a 21% domestic market share at the end of 2011, behind Jet Airways/JetLite, and up 4 ppts on a yearon-year basis. For the second consecutive year, the carrier reported domestic passenger growth of almost 40% to 11.8 million, with total passenger numbers exceeding the 12 million-passenger mark following the launch of international operations in Sep-2011.

some challenges with respect to people and service standards as a result of rapid growth, but management is paying attention to this to ensure the strong reputation that the airline has built up is maintained. Underlying operating profitability is expected to remain under pressure, due to the weak rupee, yield pressure, high taxes, rising airport fees and high fuel costs. Mr Ghosh acknowledged the tough market conditions, stating: “If the fares are down and fuel prices are up, obviously it will create pressure on margins. But as long as we can keep our heads above the water, which basically means we have money for spare parts, for hiring people, for recruitment, that’s what profitability

means for us”. According to DGCA monthly traffic data, IndiGo handled over 1 million passengers for the first time in May-2011 (with 1.1 million passengers), a feat replicated in Jun-2011, Oct-2011, Nov-2011, Dec-2011, Jan-2012 and Feb-2012, with over 1.1 million passenger in each of these months. The airline has however experienced

Regardless, the carrier is in a position envied by its peers. According to Mr Ghosh, the carrier’s “only big objective is to prove that low-cost is not lowquality”, with the carrier firmly focused on the often forgotten basics: on-time performance, clean aircraft and good onboard service at a time when many of its peers are struggling to remain in business.
