Diageo 3Q performance boosted by US market

Even giants such as Diageo Plc are vulnerable to hard economic conditions in crisis-hit Europe. The newest findings of the London-based drinks company showed, however, that weak demand in the EU was partially offset by strong results recorded in the US market.

Results noted by Diageo On the 18th of April, Diageo Plc, the world’s biggest distiller, released its results for the third quarter and the ninemonth period ended March. According to the findings, drinks giant Diageo Plc witnessed 5 percent organic net sales growth for the nine-months period. Additionally, net sales growth for the nine months amounted to around 6 percent. Interestingly, the London-based distiller highlighted that its two important emerging markets, namely Brazil and Nigeria, witnessed unsetting growth slowdown in the three-months ended March due to “consumer weakness. The fact is that these disturbing new trends in emerging markets were offset significantly by strong and healthy performance in North America which is undeniably its largest market.

Samsung to lunch surprising? 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 in May After making a lot of fuss, Samsung Electronics Co. has finally informed that it will release its new device – Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 – in May. The successor of the Galaxy Tab 2 has been highly anticipated, but the question is whether it is surprising enough to be widely desired by customers. The launch of the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 might also turn out to be a simple washout as analysts note that it does not offer anything new or exciting.

Anything new in 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab 3?

tion: “Why does Samsung Electronics Co. want to release a new device in the highly saturated segment of the tablet market?” The question might be even more earthy, taking into account that the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, which launch is due to take place in May, does not offer anything excitingly new, not to mention that it is very similar to its predecessors. Will the Galaxy Tab 3, which is not innovative at all, help the company grab a bigger market share? It is highly doubtful in spite of the fact that the device is ideal for children.

South Korea reveals $15bn extra budget to back slowing economy After much anticipation, South Korea informed that it had prepared a 17.3 trillion won ($15.4 billion) extra budget aimed at spurring its recently fragile economy. Indeed, the Asia’s fourth economy has lately witnessed a slowdown in its economy due to the weakness of yen and escalating North Korean threats. All recent initiatives of the South Korean government are designed to boost the country’s economy and support its exporters.

Supplementary budget of $15bn On the 16th of April, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance informed that it decided to introduce a $15.4 billion supplementary budget. According to estimates of the authorities, the extra

measures will stimulate recently sluggish growth by approximately 0.3 percent. A detailed statement released by the country’s officials indicated that the net increase would amount to more than 5 trillion won as 12 trillion won would be used to cover a staggering shortfall in revenue. The supplementary budget was much anticipated as the South Korean government had been talking about extra fiscal measures for the last couple of weeks. However, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance underlined that the extra fiscal measures would be covered by issuing government debt which in turn would lead to the fiscal deficit of roughly 1.8 percent in 2013, according to initial projections.

In addition, the strong figures for the fourth quarter resulted in high revenue for the six months ended March which amounted to around £1.12 billion. Also half-year revenue topped analysts’ estimates of £1.09 billion. The detailed findings indicated that retail sales, which account for three-fourth of UK-based company’s revenue, climbed approximately 14 percent to as much as £375 million pounds in the three-month period ended March. Even though fewer shoppers were recorded, Burberry Group recorded quite satisfying results due to increased medium spend.

There are endless list of books, published articles and research studies available to readers today which go on to define and classify different “Styles of Leadership” that can be practiced effectively in today’s super-competitive, globalized work life. A lot of these works are authored by professional psychologists, sociologists, personal coaches to C level executives or former leaders themselves. The writers attempt to try and demystify to a general audience the art of thinking which transforms an individual into an “Effective Leader”.

20

May 13

Let’s break it down. When you think of the word “Leader”, few names that crop up in one’s mind will be typically of great personalities – these personalities might belong to different generes & walks of life like great kings and queens from our history who have left a indelible legacy or giant individuals from the stream of politics who have significantly impacted nations and people at large. Visualizing a “Leader” might bring to our minds supremely confident presidents or heads of business organizations or industries who by their actions and forethought have drastically changed the

way people perceive and live their lives. On a more granular examination, we probably can spot leaders from all walks of life. It could be in the form of a farmer, a teacher, a doctor or even a humble housewife. When you look around yourself with this new awareness which acknowledges possibility of existence of leadership even in unassuming personalities around, you can easily identify people who showcase leadership in the most mundane of human life today. As a point to ponder, let us try and view

Justin Bieber on the radio through the lens of a “Leader”. Most unbiased individuals irrespective of their interest in music would consider Justin Bieber to be a “Leader in his chosen field of Music”, with approximately 37 million followers on Twitter and as per user statistics released by Twitter, he accounts of 3 percent of server usage at a given point in time. Even at this early stage of the Justin Bieber’s career, he is the only artist with seven songs from the debut album reigning at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010. His success, style and ca-

reer in some sense define “Leadership in the music industry”, not to mention that these qualities of his inspire people and draw humanity across the globe to follow his music. Another worthwhile leadership personality for us to explore would be Michael Dell. It was his “thought leadership” that have inspired PCs manufacturers to sell directly to customers as in its foundation the idea would translate into more profits to the company and also prove

economical to a customer, thereby revolutionizing the way people purchase PCs today. This “big risk taking ability and forethought” of Michael Dell can be termed as a leadership ability in the business domain and it helped Michael Dell grow his company into a $56 billion revenue generating PC manufacturer in 2012. Hence “The Art of Leadership” can be postulated as a trait, habit, character of a individual who will not sit and wait

above learning into the work life situations one faces & evaluate for him or herself if the approach works. As the definition says “Art” is an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination and “Leadership” is showing the way or direction to others to follow, influencing or guiding others through ideas, strengths and heroic feats. The great Chinese general “Sun Tzu” in his seminal work “Art of War” commented elaborately on traits a great general should imbibe to emerge as a Successful Leader. Since today’s business environment in a lot of situations resembles and juxtaposes to a war-like situation, it would be interesting to draw parallels to Sun Tzu prescription of Leadership qualities.

“A leader leads by example, not by force” ― Sun Tzu Like a general leading his troops into War – a Great Leader will lead his people from the front by clearly spelling out a clear vision and the steps one needs to follow to accomplish the goal.

for a situation to crop up which in turn would demand response, but to bring to bear all the unique capabilities and life experience one has accumulated over the years to anticipate and plan for potential road blocks and challenges. The literature available and studies conducted on the subject of leadership can only help an individual in understanding the innate philosophy which drives the appropriate leadership behavior, but in the end a reader has to incorporate the

A great leader does not stop at articulating and showing the path ahead, but will strive to walk the talk and does the same things that he expects his people to do. This quality will repose confidence of the troops in the ability of a General to get the task accomplished and hence the foot soldiers will be more enthusiastic in following the Leaders Command.

over the minds of his people if he expects them to follow him. To win over the mind of the people, he expects to lead, the leader has to understand the personal drivers of those individuals. Once he is able to align those individuals aspirations in line with the vision or goal he has set for the organization, the individual will strive hard to meet both his personal as well as organization goal. Finally it would be instructive to internalize a quote from the Guru of Modern Management – Peter Drucker to conclude this write up.

Hence it is important for a individual gearing up to take up a “Leadership” role to develop the “ART” of “Application of human creative skill” to persuade his followers to proceed on a pre-decided path chosen by the Leader.

Peter Drucker states that “Leadership is all about lifting a person’s vision to high

About 150 years ago, no one did imagine cars. These days no one imagines lives without them. But with omnipresent cars, we have to face the growing number of accidents. Some of these accidents are fatal. Truth be told, accident statistics are inexorable. So many people die each year in car accidents all over the world. And if you think that these fatal accidents are caused only by drunk or drugged drivers, you are simply mistaken. Te fact is that we are more afraid of a plane crush than a car accident. Yet taking into consideration data, we should keep in mind that we have a better chance to die in a car accident, no doubt about that. Even though many of us are

28

May 2013

also convinced about their luck, some individuals, however, decorate their cars’ dashboards with religious symbols. This means nothing else that they believe that God, whatever one they believe in, can help them avoid an accident. Not going in the sociological and religious details, the fear of accident accompanies almost most of us and that is something completely natural. Now, imagine yourself living in a world without car accidents. Probably you think that it is something unimaginable or even unrealistic. Nothing further from the truth, just look at examples from the past when people did not imagine cars, planes, computers, etc. Humankind, however, desires development

which also brings the better quality of life. Therefore we should not be surprised that many companies as well as individuals have dedicated their work to developing technology and methods which will eliminate car accidents.

can talk. The idea of talking cars, which in its basics assumes that it will prevent us from taking part in car accidents, is not a new one. It has been developed by many companies and research institutions.

The world without accidents is nothing unrealistic. It is for the asking as so many institutions and companies have been working hard to make a dream come true.

It seems, however, closer than you can think as Jennifer Healey, who is a scientist at Intel Corporation Research Labs, underlines that the world without accidents is attainable due to the fact that we have the proper technology to achieve it. She believes in talking cars which will be able to share the important data with each other, thereby making possible avoiding accidents. It is important to note what she once stated: “You can’t really sense the world around

you. You’re in this extended body. You’re tasked with navigating it down roadways in and amongst other metal giants at superhuman speeds. And all you have to guide you are your two eyes.” Therefore Jennifer Healey calls attention to the fact that with advanced and developed algorithms, we can predict situations that might occur on the road. Yet the most important is the willingness to share data, without this readiness, all estimations will be incomplete and tech-

nology will not work. Talking cars, indeed, might be a revolutionary step as we (people) are imperfect creatures who rely mainly on our eyes (also imperfect) when we sit into a “glass bubble.” The idea of talking cars is not new at all and what is more is the fact that in some parts of the world the technology is being tested. For example, the United States started testing V2V (vehicle-tovehicle) technology back in 2012. All

Industry Leaders Magazine

WO W

The

these tests confirm that the idea is not taken only from the science-fiction movies, that it has strong theoretical and practical foundations. Mike Shulman, technical leader for Ford Active Safety Research and Innovation, highlighted once that the idea did not have much in common with science fiction, adding: “Mostly, the cars will be sending messages to each other and people won’t even know about it except on the rare occasions when they need a warning or help understanding what’s going on around their vehicle.” To confirm all statements that talking

cars are closer than we think, we should remind that carmakers are convinced that broader Wi-Fi use could add to significant quality to jam accident-prevention technology, thereby saving thousands of lives each year.

Is anyone at wheel? Self-driving cars seemed also unrealistic. But these days we can say that they are reality which materialized from science-fiction movies from the 60s and 70s of twentieth century. And what is more, they do not just exist as models standing in the garages but they appear

on roads. Undeniably, tech companies are much interested in developing self-driving cars as they would also decrease significantly the risks of accidents. But the idea of self-driving cars includes the idea of the talking cars itself, yet excludes the need of a human at wheel. The most known self-driving car is one produced by Google Inc., but it does not mean that other carmakers are not investing in this “science-fiction” project, just to mention BMW or Audi. But selfdriving cars will not only increase the

32

May 2013

road safety, but they will also enable disabled individuals to enjoy what they have lost – “the joy of driving”. Before the era of self-driving cars starts, we should however be willing to share data which is so important to creating talking cars. Unquestionably, self-driving cars will be an extension of intelligent and talking cars as well as extension of current driver aids, including lane-keeping systems, auto-parking systems, GPS. We have technology, but we still have to enhance software which will be responsible for processing all

Industry Leaders Magazine

WO W

The

data to steer a car.

It seems that Google Inc. is on the right path or even close to perfection (if perfection even exists) as back in late 2012, the company informed that its selfdriving vehicles logged around 300,000 miles without a single accident. This result is enviable. As it has been already mentioned, not only Google Inc. can take pride in its

project of a self-driving car. Also BMW AG has shared news about its BMW i3 with the wider public. According to the German carmaker, its new jim dandy was able to drive itself in stop-go traffic. With all these advances, we might say with all certainty that in a few years we will witness emergence of self-driving cars. But with this emergence, also we will witness changes in many other dimensions starting with car designs, institution of car ownership and ending with urban planning - nothing to sneeze at.

Inevitable changes on the road Since its beginning, the auto industry has been the lifeblood of innovation and economic growth. With new innovations springing up like a mushroom, it is ineveitable that the auto industry will see a quality change as a new tech revolution is knocking at door. When it comes to a revolution in the auto industry, we all think about intelligent and self-driving cars. These might have looked unrealistic 30 years ago, but new technology can indeed help us avoiding car accidents, thereby saving potentially thousands of live each year. The implementation of all new innovations aimed at creating talking and selfdriving cars will, without a doubt, reshape not only the auto industry but the everyday life aspects, including transportation infrastructure, the way how carmakers compete, designs of the future cities. We should be prepared for these revolutionary changes as we will witness them not in a distant future. It is not science fiction any more. It is becoming reality.

The bucolic picture of green grass, fields and peacefulness is irretrievably sinking into oblivion as the process of urbanization is simply picking up speed. With more than half of world’s population living in cities and towns, data from 1800 might be surprising as then only 3 percent lived in cities. This is after all a staggering jump.

The ongoing process of urbanization has changed the picture of the world, but it also has brought a conception of a megacity. While the definition of the megacity has also evolved as the factors have been adapted to the existing conditions, the number of cities and megacities have increased significantly. The findings of many studies showing the growing importance of cities should not be surprising as the world is, indeed, undergoing through a transition to the world being mainly tech-oriented,

thereby making the cities a basic institution of development. Research, which was conducted by McKinsey, indicates that approximately 20 percent of the Earth’s inhabitants living in only 600 cities generate as much as 60 percent of the world’s output! So what lures people to megacities which are named as “cities on steroids” by Harvard professor Edward Glaeser? In his book, Triumph of The City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, And Happier, Edward Glaeser reasons that the process of urbanization is inevitable as

people move to cities which enable us to get knowledge out of others’ experiences, thereby making progress possible.

These days, megacities are widely defined as cities with a population of more than 10 million. Yet scientists cannot always agree on the methodology used while creating a definition, thus various lists enumerate different cities. Not going into particulars, for the need of the present article, a megacity will be defined simply as a city with a population of over 10 million. However, do not be mistaken by many science-fiction movies and their visions of the idyllic life as the today’s megacities struggle with many problems, including transport, job creation, slums and even provision of health and security. Progress does not only bring positive changes as some newcomers, who want to improve their lives, live in seedy districts of cities in the fastest-growing economies, just to mention India, Mexico and others. While the emerging countries see cities grow rapidly, a problem of slums is also arising.

combine the best and worst of urban density at mammoth scale. (...)In the developed world, megacities look pretty good. There is a lot to be said for New York, London and Paris.” But in emerging markets, he says, “the downsides of density are more apparent, “ adding that the authorities in developing countries lack certain capabilities which are essential while coping with the increasing population.

Edward Glaeser underlines: “Megacities

As of yet, there are at least 20 megaci-

ties, according to various surveys, however, the number is going to change in the near future.

Domination of East Surprising or not, the fact is that the East has dominated the lists of megacities. Some may be astonished by this revelation, taking into account that the modern megacity is, without, a doubt a concept having its roots mainly in the West. But indeed, it seems that the as-

cendancy of the West has indivertible elapsed even when it comes to megacities. The perfect evidence of that fact is the following list of the five top megacities in the world. 1. Tokyo-Yokohama is still ranked as the biggest megacity in the world with its approximately 37 million inhabitants. The Japanese city can doubtfully glory in a density of 11,000 per square mile. But the undeniable fact is that in the top five megacities, the Tokyo-Yokohama

can take pride in its richness as its per capita GDP is more than $41,100.

Not only is Tokyo-Yokohama the biggest megacity in the world, but it is also one of the better business destinations as well. Tokyo remains a place attractive to business. With its large population, the Tokyo-Yokohama is, without a doubt, a place where companies want to be present. 2. Not surprising to some of the people who are interested in the demographics of the modern world, Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia, is the world’s second biggest megacity which is home to around 28 million people. The population of the Indonesian megacity, often called Jabodetabek, which consists of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi, has advanced by as much as 34 percent since 2000. As it is underlined by analysts, the megacity’s suburbs are still widening. Back in 2006, former Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso outlined a plan of the megacity development aimed at creating Jabodetabekjur which would include all aforementioned cities and Banten’s Tangerang regency as well as Cianjur. 3. Seoul-Incheon is the today’s third largest megacity in the world. The South Korean megacity has a population of about 25 million. Its per capita GDP is about $32,200. However, with dramatic growth observed in the city, Seoul-Incheon has to face increasing problems, including noise and air pollution. Truth be told, the authorities of the megacity are fully aware of

the challenges caused by progress of urbanization, thus several institutions are engaged in programs aimed at developing new building concepts and IT solutions. 4. What must be shocking, Shanghai is only the world’s fourth largest megacity! With a population of roughly 25 million,

44

May 2013

the China’s city has found itself far behind the leader of the list, Tokyo. Like any other megacity, Shanghai struggles with air pollution, noise pollution and large quantities of waste as well. However, that does not change the fact that the city has been changing in the last couple of years and has become one of the better business destinations as it of-

fers countless opportunities for growth. 5. Mexico City is the world’s fifth largest megacity and the only one located outside the East in the top five. It is home to around 23 million people and the population is still steadily growing. The emergence of this megacity occurred in 1970s and since then, Mexico City has

been struggling with socially-derived problems, such as air and noise pollution, potable water supplies, waste water removal, and large quantities of garbage, etc. The government of Mexico is more aware of problems in its megacity, thus it has introduced some programs aimed at reducing them, including finding sustainable solutions for the city.

Interestingly, only two areas from North America, namely New York and Los Angeles, are enlisted in the ranking of the world’s megacities. Europe is only represented by Moscow (15th), London and Paris which, however, are ranked in the far end of the list.

Megacities in the future The fact is that traditionally dominating western cities from Europe and North America are making way for the East. To crown it all, the developing world is expected to have 29 megacities by 2025, according to one forecast. Another survey by McKinsey’s indicate that Asia will be home to 14 megacities, while seven will be located in Latin America and Africa by 2025.

What is interesting is the fact that only four cities from Europe and North America -New York, Paris, London and Los Angeles -will have the titles of the megacity. McKinsey also predicts that the top seven megacities by population ( Tokyo, Mumbai, Shanghai, Beijing, Delhi, Calcutta and Dhaka) will be located in Asia itself.

day’s 3.2 billion to staggering 5 billion by 2030 when more than 60 percent of people will be living in cities. With this increasing dominance of megacities in the developing world, more and more questions arise on the matter of the quality of life for the future inhabitants of these cities. Almost all surveys point out one very important trend of the so-called de-Westernization which has already started and it seems that it will continue to intensify. Without a doubt, cities in North America and Europe are withering on the vine, while those in the developing world are simply growing. The best example of the fastest-growing city is Karachi in Pakistan which witnessed a staggering expansion of 80 percent in its population from 2000 to 2010. Also the economies of China and India have been observing intense development of its cities, thus their domination in the future should not be surprising at all. Yet with the future domination of lower-income cities (megacities), such as Lima, Kinshasa, Chennai, Hyderabad - which are predicted to become megacities by 2030, the world is expected to see the emergence of new challenges as the process of urbanization implicates both regional and global consequences, including opportunities and risks as well. Therefore it is essential to find effective ways of sustainable development which will be able to reduce all risks driven by the dramatic process of urbanization and emergence of low-income megacities.

Indeed, the estimates by different institutions and organizations, including the United Nations, show that the urban population will increase from to-

Sprint Nextel Corp. is experiencing what almost every young girl wants – advances. What’s more, who could have predicted that troubled Sprint Nextel would have two serious wooers? It all started so banal. After struggling with deep losses and a debt for half of a decade, Sprint Nextel Corp. found its lifeline. The company announced that it was in negotiations with SoftBank Corp., the Japanese cellphone company. Concurrently, the Japanese company also confirmed that it considered making a substantial investment in the No. 3 US carrier. But then suddenly out of nowhere, the third one appeared in a picture and that how the whole story began. ..

Sprint – SoftBank talks According to a source familiar with the matter, the Sprint Nextel – SoftBank talks, which began in 2012 summer, on purchasing a stake of approximately 70 percent and providing capital for necessary investments. SoftBank Corp., the Japanese telecommunications company, is to pay roughly $20 billion for the stake in Sprint Nextel Corp. The Sprint Nextel – SoftBank talks began just a week after Deutsche Telekom, the parent of T-Mobile USA, informed about a reverse takeover of MetroPCS, a small company in cellphone service. The No. 3 US carrier provided only few details on the Sprint Nextel – SoftBank talks. As it was stated by the company based in the Overland Park, Kan.,

“Although there can be no assurances that these discussions will result in any transaction or on what terms any transaction may occur, such a transaction could involve a change of control of Sprint. Sprint does not intend to comment further unless and until an agreement is reached.” The SoftBank Corp.’s investment would certainly give Sprint Nextel Corp. money to speed up building its next-generation wireless network, 4G LTE network. In September 2012, the No. 3 US carrier, Sprint Nextel Corp., informed that it had launched the network in 24 cities and it planned to launch it in over 100 cities. Furthermore, it is speculated that after the takeover, Sprint Nextel Corp. could acquire other carriers in the market. The combined entity would consider other deals, including a takeover of Clearwire Corp. which is a wireless provider and one of its significant stakeholders is actually Sprint Nextel Corp. The takeover of Sprint Nextel Corp. would probably have no problems obtaining approvals of the Federal Communications Commission and other agencies, which are increasingly leery of Verizon‘s and AT&T‘s positions in a wireless space, according to Jeffrey Silva, a senior policy director of telecommunica-

tions at Medley Global Advisors. However, there are some potential hurdles to the takeover of the No. 3 US carrier, including convincing Sprint Nextel Corp.’s shareholders as well as resolving a rocky relationship between the company and its partner, Clearwire Corp. But the Sprint Nextel – SoftBank talks have the potential to reshape the US wireless market; if the combined entity is created, it will certainly be a competitor of Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. Yet some analysts expressed surprised at the possible takeover of Sprint Nextel Corp. as there had been information on the possibility of acquiring other US cellphone companies by the No.3 carrier. According to them, the acquisition by SoftBank Corp. would not help Sprint Nextel Corp. improve its position in the US wireless market.

Sprint in Troubles Sprint Nextel Corp. is in a difficult competitive position. The company has approximately 56 million wireless subscribers. According to compiled data, Sprint Nextel Corp. losses high-payingg subscribers to its biggest rivals, namely, Verizon and AT&T. In addition, the company has about $21 billion in long-term debt. It has involved in building a new network and it also signed a long-term contract to purchase roughly $15.5 billion worth Apple Inc.’s iPhones. The company believes that new combined entity would improve its position in the market and improve its own technology to lure more potential customers. The acquisition of Sprint Nextel Corp. would give SoftBank Corp. a significant presence at the US wireless market.

Therefore, the unexpected Dish Network’s rival bid for Sprint Nextel Corp. was a big surprise for SoftBank Corp. which thought that its offer was a safe bet. Everything indicates that we might see a steadily growing escalation of a competition between SoftBank Corp. and Dish Network Corp.

is expected to continue as Dish Network Corp., which is the US direct-broadcast satellite service provider, aims to purchase the troubled company for staggering $25.5 billion. What is interesting is the fact that the Dish Network’s offer is around 13 percent higher than the sum initially proposed by SoftBank Corp.

Indeed, the Dish Network’s rival bid for Sprint Nextel is designed not only to ruin SoftBank’s plans regarding the merger, but to create a new quality in the US market as well. But it seems that SoftBank Corp. will not give up easily as it has already underlined that the rival offer is “highly conditional.”

The plans of the Sprint takeover are aimed at combing the Dish Network’s satellite service with Sprint Nextel’s wireless network which in turn would lead to posing a threat to the market giants such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. The fact is that Dish Network had been looking for interesting prospects for a long time and the company decided that Sprint Nextel seemed to be the best option. SoftBank Corp. which offered slightly over $20 billion for 70 percent shares in tormented Sprint Nextel. The would-be purchase was said to be a some kind of milestone in history of Japan’s biggest overseas acquisitions. It seems, however, the SoftBank Corp. will not give up easily as the Japanese telecommunication giant believes that the unsought Dish Network’s offer does not present the same value as its own bid for Sprint Nextel. The Japanese company underlined: “SoftBank believes

that the agreed terms of our transaction with Sprint offer Sprint shareholders superior short- and long-term benefits to Dish’s highly conditional preliminary proposal,” adding that it was convinced that the contract would be finalized on the 1st of July. Sprint Nextel is undeniably in an enviable situation as it is able to choose the offer which will be more beneficial. It is more than certain that if SoftBank does not back from its offer, the war between the Japanese telecommunication giant and Dish Network Co. will burgeon. In addition, SoftBank Corp. believes that the Dish Network’s rival bid for Sprint Nextel presents an uncertain and not a well-thought-out offer, thereby making

its own bid more interesting and beneficial. Surprising or not, Sprint Nextel informed that it would review the rival bid made by Dish Network Corp. In both cases, deals would bring newness and new qualities. If the Dish Network’s offer is passed, one of the US biggest pay-TV providers will be created. However, if the company opts for the offer made by SoftBank Corp., Japan will record its biggest overseas purchase ever. Time will tell which offer will win. Yet there is a saying: “Two dogs strive for a bone and the third runs away with it.” Who knows maybe another runner will enter the game.

Sydney is undeniably not only about Opera House and Harbor Bridge. Even its magnificent views do not fully show the significance of the Australia’s biggest city. Unquestionably, Sydney is known for its touristic value, but the fact is that below the unforgettable pleasures for the tourists, the city offers much for businesses as well. Simply, Sydney is the better business destination and a place to do business.

Furthermore, its position as the financial center is confirmed also by the fact that overwhelming 65 percent of the Australia’s finance industry, which includes the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange, can be found in Sydney. Certainly, the political stability and strong democratic values present in Australia make Sydney the better business destination.

The position of Sydney is also backed by the generally good economic conditions of Australia, which has not suffered so much from the global financial crisis like other countries, and the low-risk profile of the country’s economy as well. And Sydney as the better business destination is simply considered the economic epicenter of the Australia’s economy. The significance of Sydney as a place to do business is also much bolstered up by the interesting location in the Asia Pacific region, thereby making it ideally situated for multinational companies as well as growth in general. Hence it is not surprising that Sydney has been ranked among

Even though Sydney is not a capital of Australia and some people do tend to forget about that fact, the city is the financial capital of the world’s twelvebiggest economy. Its financial status might be confirmed by the simple statistics saying that the city is home to staggering 48 percent of Australia’s largest companies and regional headquarters for countless multinational businesses.

Better Business Destination the world’s most attractive destination for foreign direct investment for years!

What strong

makes

Sydney

Sydney as a place to do business has many advantages over its rivals. Not going banal, we should underline that every better destination has its own sequences of advantages making it unique. The same applies to Sydney which is often regarded as a gate to the Asia Pacific region.

Certainly, the unique location of Sydney, including the fact that the city is about 10 to 11 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) as well as trading ahead of Tokyo, Hong Kong and Singapore, adds to the city’s basic strengths. Of course companies, which are interested in building their presence in Sydney, are also interested in things like safety, education and healthcare. What is important is the fact that Sydney can glory in high rates in these spheres. More important, the Australia’s biggest city and at the same time the better business destination is environmentfriendly one, thus companies, which pay much attention to sustainability, will be indeed satisfied with their choice. As it was aforementioned the Australia’s economy is ranked as the world’s 12th, hence Sydney as its biggest city seems to be natural choice while deciding where to start a business. The better business destination is even more attractive to businesses as the Australia’s economy has not suffered from the global financial crisis as other countries have. The strength of the Australia’s economy is underlying its factors such as trade

and fiscal freedom. The strong dedication to these freedoms makes Sydney the better business destination as companies are keener on starting or transferring a business to the Australia’s biggest city. But Sydney, the better business destination and a place to do business, lures companies with its trustworthy infrastructure, including communication and transport, which is competitive when compared to other cities in the Asia Pacific region. And that is not last of the advantages of Sydney as it is very attractive to businesses due to its highly educated population of approximately 2.2 million people from almost every part of the world. Workers here are highly skilled, not to mention that more than 1 million people speak a language other than English. It is not surprising taking into consideration a fact that almost 30 percent of Australians who were born overseas live in that better business destination. Without a doubt, one of the biggest advantages of Sydney is the fact that it presents a resilient economy of Australia, which makes it a safe business environment. In the Asia Pacific region where intellectual property is not fully respected, Australia’s laws provide businesses with protection of their rights and this fact also argues for the Sydney’s title of the better business destination. Not to mention, that also 30 percent company income tax in Australia might unquestionably lure businesses to Sydney as they will not meet any limitations on capital flow, capital repatriation, transfers, royalties, etc. Also what might be interesting for many companies is the fact that the city does not held the doubtful title of the most expensive office location in the world which these days belongs to London. More important, Sydney offers cheaper offices spaces than Seoul, Tokyo, Hong

And it is not an exaggeration to say that Sydney, the better business destination, is a truly global city. The opportunities, which are offered by Sydney, are also reinforced by the authorities’ aspirations targeting the best quality of provided services and global competitiveness. The city’s authorities and numerous organizations are convinced that Sydney indeed offers quality and opportunities. However, even with this belief, they have been pressing on as they aim to present new opportunities to companies. Indeed, Sydney, which is the better business destination and a place to do business, is expected to enter a road of accelerated growth as institutions and authorities are attempting to implement the plans of the new city with more in-

frastructure developments. But the fact is that the one of basic advantages of Sydney is its location. What makes Sydney so attractive to businesses is the fact that it is a gate to the Asia Pacific region. It seems that the Sydney’s fortune is inextricably connected to the future of the Asia Pacific region. Therefore it is not surprising that the Sydney’s authorities are very much focused on developing the city’s connections with the region. With its unique location and countless opportunities, Sydney will make your business sound like symphony in Opera House.

All of us have a passion for something. And a passion is what arguably pushes us to take an action.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that: “It makes all things alive and significant.” It seems that cars have this amazing magnetic strength of luring people. Indeed, since the invention of a car at the end of the nineteenth century, people have been enchanted by them. What’s more, the richest people all over the world, who can allow themselves to spend money on whims, also decide to collect cars. Simply, they do not have to be on the horns of a dilemma which car they should buy. Moreover, they do not have to choose a car only because of their basic needs. Some of them might even follow a rule by George Best who said: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.” One thing is certain that if you are not bothered by the depth of your pocket, you can give full rein to whatever car you want as a vehicle might be an expression of one’s personality. Without a doubt, collecting all sorts of things is in the people’s blood. Truth be told, men are well known for loving cars and collecting them. And while some people love collecting classic cars, some are fond of collecting fast and super cars, other are fans of collecting cars which were portrayed in films. Carlos Ghosn was right when he once underlined: “Design is important, it’s an important dimension in the car. It’s not the only one.” Below you will be able to admire some of the best collections of cars. Enjoy, but remember that it is not only about cars and having them.

Aviation Industry Corporation of China annual sales amounted to over $ 47,000 million for the fiscal year ended December 2012. To put this Chinese state-owned company’s stellar growth in context, one needs to track its ascendancy in the Fortune Global 500 Inc list. Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) was formed by amalgamating two previously existing state-owned companies by the name of Aviation Industry Corporation

of China 1 and Aviation Industry Corporation of China 2 into a single entity in 2008. This new entity was rebranded as Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). In the year 2010, Fortune ranked Aviation Industry Corporation of China 330th. By 2012, Aviation Industry Corporation of China catapulted over 80 spots to 250 in the Fortune 500 Listings – leaving other names like Fed Ex, Google and Morgan Stanley behind it with reported revenue of over $930 Million for fiscal year ended December 2012.

History of Aviation Industry Corporation of China One can find the origins of Aviation Industry Corporation of China in 1951 when China government established the “Bureau of Aviation Industry”. Through the decades of the 1950’s to the 1970’s the organization built its technical knowhow, manufacturing acumen & assembling capabilities incrementally through licensed production of fighter aircraft and trainer aircraft from US-based manufacturers. China had by the mid 1970’s recalibrated its long-term strategic goals and had a vision of developing an indigenous military and civilian aircraft manufacturing capabilities so that they could reduce their dependency on external suppliers. As the Bureau of Aviation Industry evolved and grew its engineering abilities and its potential to enter the wider spectrum of aircraft engineering and design opened up, a new organization named “Aviation Industries of China” was created in 1993 under the aegis of Ministry of Aerospace Industries. Through the years of the 1970’s & the 1980’s China continued to open up to the outside world and was trying to position itself as a global warehouse and factory. A host of United States and Europe-based aircraft manufacturers made a beeline to leverage the cheap man power made available by “Aviation Industries of China”. In 1999, Aviation Industries of China was restructured into two separate entities christened Aviation Industry Corporation of China 1 and Aviation Industry Corporation of China 2. The charter for one of the new entities was to incubate the indigenous efforts in research and development of new technologies for China’s stand alone aircraft manufacturing aspirations to meet their military and civilian needs.

The stated goal of the second entity was to continue to partner and leverage from the technical knowledge transfer that was happening by deepening their partnership with the wider global aircraft manufacturing industries and draw them to invest further into China. With this clearly thought out strategy of augmenting its own indigenous research and development abilities while at the same time being able to leverage (through their expanding partnerships with Boeing, Airbus, General Electric, Rolls-Royce), the vast repository of learning the aircraft industry accumulated in United States and Europe over the past decade – the two separate compa-

Hence as 2000 dawned, these two companies had successfully evolved into super efficient organizations with great success stories to portray. One of the entities “Aviation Industry Corporation of China 1” has evolved into a Research & Development powerhouse with capabilities to design their own military and civilian aircraft along with the advanced avionics and the entire gamut of devices and systems required to keep a aircraft flying in the air. Aviation Industry Corporation of China - Current Avatar As the global business dynamics started to change post the 2008 global economic crisis and China’s own geopolitical aspirations evolved in line with its economic growth – the two state run entities “Aviation Industry Corporation of China 1” and “Aviation Industry Corporation of China 2” were merged into a single entity and rebranded as “Aviation

Industry Corporation of China” in 2008 to realize the economies of scale and for being able to compete effectively in the international market for aircraft orders. Like in the case of other Chinese stateowned enterprises, complete details are not available on the holding patterns and the decision making hierarchy of this aeronautical behemoth in the public domain. It is public knowledge that the company is led by Lin Zuoming as its Chairman and Tan Ruisong as its president with nine technocrats officiating as Executive Vice presidents.
