Editor’s Blog by Carrie-Ann Industry Leaders Magazine has been providing business news and information across various industry sectors from different parts of the world. We have been publishing stories about milestones reached by companies through phenomenal efforts and winning strategies. While China is struggling to curb inflation that might threaten global economic growth, as an effective move China’s central bank raised interest rates and the deposit reserve ratio in an effort to cool the nation’s overheating economy. Our cover story of May 2011 issue, is weaved around the recent overheating of the Chinese economy and the struggles of the Chinese government for cooling it down for good. The story has been expressed very well on the cover page with Zhou Xiaochuan, Governor of People’s bank of China and Wen Jiabao, the Prime Minister of China are desperately trying to pull down the fast-moving economy. How could we not cover the much awaited royal marriage in Great Britain. Though it is said that they had tried to keep the costs low, here’s an interesting account of what the majestic marriage cost the commoners in the U.K. All this and more… Regards,

Beelining Volkswagen’s all new macho 2012 Beetle? Volkswagen’s iconic Beetle, revamped to be more appealing to the market of male car buyers, takes on an all-new look with a slicker, less curvy body. Officially unveiled in New York, Shanghai and Berlin in the latter half of April 2011, Volkswagen’s 2012 Beetle - after the 1998 Beetle, VW chooses to call this one simply the 21st century Beetle - has been designed to re-establish its popularity with men. A flatter roof, a less voluptuous body and more angular windows, constitute the Beetle’s first overhaul in 14 years, and have been made in line with VW’s vision

of trebling its U.S. sales of cars and trucks over the next ten years. 71.2 inches wide and 168.4 inches long, the 2012 Beetle is bigger, equipped for the first time with an auto start system, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and an 80% larger panoramic roof as compared to the previous model. Given the 82% decline in the Beetle’s 2011 sales in the U.S over the first quarter, despite a 15% rise in overall VW sales, a lot is being expected of the new 2012 version. How much the new car will cost is yet to be announced.

BAT’s new tobacco-free nicotine: Nicoventures British American Tobacco (BAT), estimated to be the world’s second largest tobacco group by global market share, has confirmed reports of having established Nicoventures Limited, a start-up company that aims to commercialize sans-tobacco nicotine products which could help wean smokers off its cigarettes.

13

May 2011

A natural extension of the company’s approach to tobacco harm reduction that has been developed by BAT over recent years, Nicoventures will be managed separately from the group’s tobacco businesses. With the aim of providing adult smokers with a variety of non-tobacco based options which would offer the same experience as a cigarette without the real and serious health risks of smoking, Nicoventures is looking at entering a market that to date has not been explored.

The Latest in Business

A bold move you think ? Sure – in terms of creating a product that directly competes with the primary product of the group. But also a very market-responsive move, given that reactions to the dangers of tobacco and smoking tobacco-based cigarettes are becoming more wide-spread globally.

U.S Housing shows Recovery; New Home Sales rise by 11.1% Following three straight months of declining new home sales, the American housing market displayed a small recovery in the month of March, with an 11.1% rise in the number of new homes being bought in the world’s largest economy. The rise in the number of new homes sold in March was accompanied by a 2.9% rise in the median sales price, as compared to a month earlier, according to the Commerce Department.

Tom Parker

This comes as a significant relief for the U.S housing market, which is now in the fifth year of declining sales. The 11.1% rise in new home sales is equivalent to a seasonally adjusted rate of 300,000, higher than the market estimate of around 280,000. As a result, figures for February results were also revised, and increased from the previously reported 250,000 to 270,000.

Royal Wedding to cost

$70 million T

he wedding of the year finally happened! Prince William tied the “Windsor Knot” with Kate Middleton, at Westminster Abbey, in the presence of 1,900 people on 29th April 2011. And while the couple has reportedly tried to keep their budget tight, cost estimates of the wedding hover at between $50million to $80million. Modest by royal standards? Maybe. But given Britain’s current economic situation, a $70million long bill, for a 27

wedding attended by almost 2000 guests, still seems pretty stupendous. Putting this total cost in perspective, Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in June last year cost only around $5million. So what’s the split-up of the immediate costs related to this very wow-inspiring majestic marriage cost? How much of this did taxpayers pay for? And, which businesses benefitted the most from this shebang?

Security Cost: Approximately $33 million Constituting the largest portion of the total expense incurred over the wedding, the security provisions made for this royal affair over-shadow even the $12million www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Marri security put in place when the G20 protests took place in 2009 in London. London police accompanied the bridal procession, and armed military personnel escorted the couple from the church service. With the day having been declared a national holiday, officers were paid double time. According to Scotland Yard Deputy Commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, 5,000 police officers were scheduled to be on patrol on the day of the wedding, alongwith about 200 mounted police and 35 sniffer dogs. This huge chunk of wedding cost will be paid for by Britain’s taxpayers. And sure, all of Scotland Yard was on their toes trying to secure every corner of London for the event, but they’re going to be that much richer for it also!

Kate Middleton’s Cake Wedding Dress Cost: Approximately $78,000

A bridal gown becomes an heirloom in the most ordinary of families. So how could one not expect an over-the-top bridal dress for the lady who’s getting hitched to the Prince of Wales?

Leicestershire-based cake designer Fiona Cairns created a multi-layered traditional fruit cake, decorated with cream and white icing, following a strong British floral theme using elements of the Joseph Lambeth technique, for the royal wedding.

Cost: between $300,000 to $450,000

Kate Middleton’s wedding dress cost has been estimated at between $300,000 to $450,000, as opposed to the average U.S wedding dress cost of about $1,000. With massive curtains of secrecy drawn across the dress to be worn on The Day, information that Sarah Burton of the Alexander McQueen label had designed Kate's wedding dress was finally made public after the wedding All costs related to Kate's wedding outfits, including her 6-figure wedding dress, were borne by the Middletons.

www.industryleadersmagazine.com

The prince and his betrothed chose Fiona for their special occasion because of her 25-year long experience, creative style and beautifully-crafted handmade cakes using traditional British ingredients. Additionally, the couple also asked McVitie's Cake Company to create a chocolate biscuit cake – made from a Royal Family recipe, one of Prince Williams’ favourites for the Buckingham Palace reception.

Other Costs While the above components comprised some of the most significant chunks of total expenses associated with the royal wedding, other components like accommodation for guests, music, food, etc., obviously ran up pretty long bills too.

iage Majestic The Royal Wedding and Britain’s Economy 29th April, the day when Kate and William got married, was declared a national holiday. And, according to estimates by the Confederation of British Industry, shutting down the British economy for 24 hours for the royal wedding cost the country $6billion, constituting the biggest cost of the event. With U.K facing a fiscal deficit of $256-billion this year, this extra $6billion is a very dear loss for the nation. What’s worse, the wedding fell smack bang in the middle of a string of other holidays, leaving only three working days between April 22 and May 2. As a result, many businesses stayed shut through the entire 10-day period, with related lost productivity liekly removing $47-billion from economic output, according to an estimate by accounting firm RSM Tenon. There is one small compensation though. Tourism and merchandise related to the royal wedding are likely to boost Britain’s economy by about $1billion.

In addition to the reasons stated above, a big contributor towards gold and silver reaching these record prices was speculation that borrowing costs will be raised at a slow pace by the U.S Federal Reserve, and the related weakening of the dollar, which boosted the appeal of the metal market as an alternative asset.

While at the start of this year, many gold investors cashed in and traded gold for other forms of investment, this sentiment seems to have changed considerably since. Barrick, Minmetals withdraws Carrie Ann

Equinox,

Australian copper miner, announced late last month that it had accepted the $7.1 billion takeover offer by the world’s biggest gold miner, Canadian Barrick Gold. Barrick’s offer, being significantly higher than the $6.5billion proposal bid by Chinese miner Minmetals Resources, meant that Minmetals had to withdraw their offer and walk away from the deal; a blow to China’s latest acquisition attempt in the Australian mining sector.

Deal Figures & Terms According to statements made by Equinox, the copper-miner believed that the acquisition offer put forth by Barrick recognized the value and potential of the company, and presented an attractive www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Peter Tomsett, Equinox chairman, said “The board, in conjunction with our financial and legal advisors, has made a thorough assessment of the options available to us, and determined that the value and certainty offered by this transaction is an excellent opportunity for our shareholders to realise significant value.” With Barrick having offered $C8.15 per share for acquiring Equinox, the Canadian gold miner’s bid figured about 16% higher than Minmetals’ proposal. PBOC’s directive to the other big banks of China to set aside funds to accumulate larger cash reserves is a clear sign that the pace of economic growth that China is witnessing is being considered too fast by the Chinese Government. Having firmly established its position as one of the most important cogs driving global growth, China cannot afford the risk of hitting the ceiling because of sudden, high inflation which would undoubtedly result from an off-the-charts GDP growth.

High Inflation Rate: NoCan-Do for China Why? Because, to start with, a high rate of inflation would become an obstacle for China, with its population of 1.3 billion people, to continue functioning as the world’s low-cost workshop – and this in itself could cause the country’s economy to break down pretty soon.

Chinese Government about the country’s consumer price index having risen 5.4% over March – the highest rise recorded in almost three years – the country’s policymakers are obviously worried. As a broader, more global impact, very rapid economic growth and related

Also, given the recent uprisings against authoritarian governments in the Middle East and North Africa, social instability that could result from high inflation rates is also a very real worry. The recent truckers strike at the world’s busiest container port, the Port of Shanghai, is a precursor to what could happen if inflation rates continued to rise. The Port of Shanghai surpassed Singapore’s position as the boss of all container ports worldwide, and at present, approximately 80,000 containers move through the Port of Shanghai in a day. The workers strike here, in response to the 12% jump in food prices, has already considerably affected shipments in and out of Shanghai, and is representative of the effect that rising inflation would have on Chinese society. Dramatic consumer price rises in the past have been known to lead to civil unrest in China, and with the announcement by the www.industryleadersmagazine.com

With low economic growth rates and sovereign-debt issues having become serious problems for much of the Western world, these price rises would only worsen the financial problems these countries are

already faced with.

Measures to tame inflation With an overall market sentiment that estimates China’s inflation problems as way more worrisome than the figures presented by the government, a number of measures – like higher interest rates on loans and increased restrictions on banks issuing loans – have been put in place by the Chinese Government to discourage borrowing and to encourage savings.

In the past, China has deliberately kept the Yuan - also known as the Renmibi - low enough to reduce manufacturing costs, so as to continue functioning as the world’s low-cost production hotspot, and through this, retain competitiveness in the country’s enormous export sector Amongst other measures, efforts are being made by the government to curb food prices by way of increasing agricultural subsidies. Some reports also say that the Chinese government has tried to prevent price hikes of some consumer goods. In a statement at the Boao Forum for Asia, PBOC Governor Zhou spoke about the new set of financial strategies, saying “Our monetary policy will continue to move from moderately loose to prudent… (the Chinese Government) will remove the monetary factors that are related to inflation”. well as exercising vigilance where the real estate market is concerned and taking “counter- cyclical” measures to rein in soaring property prices are other measures put forth by Governor Zhou – though the extent of implementation of the latter remains debatable, given that despite a number of efforts by the Chinese Government to pull the brakes on real-estate escalation, property prices in China’s cities – especially the second and third tier cities – continue to escalate. strategy requires China to frequently buy American dollars and issue more Yuan, which as a direct consequence increases the supply of money in the domestic money supply and intensifies inflationrelated pressures.

Role of the Yuan

So, an obvious measure that is being suggested by policy-makers and academics towards curbing China’s inflationary pressures is accelerating the appreciation in the Yuan and making more use of the nation’s currency.

In the past, China has deliberately kept the Yuan - also known as the Renmibi - low enough to reduce manufacturing costs, so as to continue functioning as the world’s low-cost production hotspot, and through this, retain competitiveness in the country’s enormous export sector. This 55

According to Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, the appreciation of the Yuan as against the American dollar could possible play a significant role in controlling the rise in China’s CPI. Hu Xiaolian, deputy governor of the nation’s central bank echoed this, saying in a statement that greater flexibility in the position of the Yuan in context of global currency rates would ease inflation-related pressures.

Empty Housing in Shanghai

However, the flip side of this coin could be that gains in the Renmibi might draw hot money to china if the flow of capital is not supervised carefully, which in turn would increase market liquidity and further fuel inflation. Presenting the other side of this entire debate of needing to cool down China’s economy by controlling inflation and bringing down prices, some market analysts seriously believe that higher food prices are good for China, given that these directly boost agricultural income. While a last-minute deal struck late on the night of 8th April 2011 between the Democrats and Republicans, the widespread chaos that would’ve resulted from the U.S Government shutdown was averted. However, the deal, U.S President Barack Obama warned, is likely to bring on some of the biggest budget cuts the country has seen till now. U.S federal debt currently figures at $14 trillion, with an additional $830 billion run up in debt by the U.S government in the first six months of fiscal 2011 federal programmes, the deal that saved the U.S government from shutting down will mean that a number of infrastructure projects that people were looking forward to will be delayed. In a radio address, Obama spoke about the critical circumstances that made this deal the only way to avoid the shutdown, saying that “Some of the cuts we agreed to will be painful. Programmes [that]

people rely on will be cut back. Needed infrastructure projects will be delayed. I would not have made these cuts in better circumstances”.

The deal that avoided the shutdown The Republican front, led by Boehner, had initially wanted a much larger budget cut than the $38bn eventually agreed upon, and had declined to pass the 2011 budget unless this happened. With federal debt currently standing at $14 trillion, and an additional $830 billion run up in debt by the U.S government in the first six months of fiscal 2011, the Republicans had been blaming the Democrats of avoiding a few billion dollars in cuts, when the country’s government would soon need trillions to meet their needs. The Democrats had been accusing the Republicans of furthering their stand on social issues through the focus of their demands on budget cuts in areas such as Planned Parenthood.

Boehner got spending cuts amounting to a total of $78 billion – $40 billion in the form of increases to agency budgets and $38 billion in the form of spending cuts. The Republicans, spun on by their win last November in the House of Representatives, had initially demanded for $61 billion in cuts to keep the country running. As the shutdown grew closer, the Democrats conceded and on Wednesday made a counter offer of $34.5 billion. Boehner, however, not to seem wobbly, wouldn’t give in repeating in meetings with Democrats that “Nothing will be agreed to, until everything is agreed to.”

As part of the demands made by the Republicans, Boehner had been pushing for restricting government funding on abortions in the District of Columbia as well as a provision that would limit funds allocated for and handed out to nonprofit groups that provide abortion services across America, including Planned Parenthood. “John, I will give you D.C. abortion. I am not happy about it”. This wasn’t enough though, because on the morning of the Friday before the shutdown would take effect, Boehner’s staff was reported as asking for more cuts. This massive impasse, though averted, marks only the beginning of the much harsher rounds of negotiations that are expected in the coming months when Congress takes up the issues of the nation’s debt ceiling issue and the fiscal year 2012 budget. “It’s the first big step in the right direction,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and possible Republican presidential candidate. “John Boehner got the largest spending cut in history.”

Tax the Rich: Obama’s New Plan Following Obama’s openly voiced concerns about the final deal, including a number of funding cuts that he otherwise wouldn’t have approved of, Obama’s senior advisor David Plouffe announced across a number of television shows that the President would announce a new plan, in the week following the shutdown drama, that would help bring down the trillions of dollars in federal deficit that the country has currently accumulated. And key to this new plan would be taxing the rich a little bit more.

According to Plouffe, a prime highlight of Obama's new deficit-reduction plan included going against the GOP Plan that would make the Bush tax breaks for the rich permanent and instead pulling back the tax cuts that Americans earning more than $250,000 a year are entitled to. Speaking on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’, Plouffe said, “I think the president’s goal — and he’s been clear about this – is to protect the middle class as we move forward here… So [wealthy] people like [Obama] … who’ve been very fortunate in life, have the ability to pay a little bit more.”

U.S Government Federal Deficit

At loggerheads with Paul Ryan’s GOP Plan U.S President Barack Obama, in the deficitcut plan he announced on April 14th, proposed a $4 trillion deficit-cut over the next 12 years. In sharp contrast to the GOP Plan, the key features of Obama’s plan included being more committed towards supporting the weaker sections of society, while ending Bush-era tax cuts for the rich.

to the 2012 budget plan he put forth a few weeks ago. Already, this represents a “coming closer of numbers”.

In sharp contrast to the GOP Plan, the key features of Obama’s plan include being more committed towards supporting the weaker sections of society, while ending Bush-era tax cuts for the rich.

The GOP Plan, if implemented would do the exact opposite – making deep cuts into the Medicaid and Medicare programs, while making the Bush-era tax cuts permanent. While Obama’s plan, if implemented, would offer an estimated cut in deficit by $4 trillion over 12 years, Ryan’s GOP Plan promises a $6 trillion slash over the next decade. While Ryan’s plan and Obama’s plan are positioned at opposite ends of the spectrum, Obama's new proposal still involves a tripled deficit cut, as compared www.industryleadersmagazine.com

Obama’s stance of standing by the middle-class, given his views on entitlements and higher taxes for America’s richest citizens, obviously makes a lot of political sense.

Ryan’s plan on the other hand focuses strongly on the $14trillion debt issue, and given the party’s victories late last year gives them the benefit of wanting to get the math right for the long-term betterment of the country. The recent figures of a slow-down in the U.S economy's first quarter growth - down to 1.8% from 3.1% in the last quarter of 2010 - indicate that deep spending cuts by the government are already holding the economy back. Sky-rocketing oil prices, and a struggling U.S housing market further hamper growth. Lets just hope Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke's predictions of these factors easing off soon, come true.

Chemicals Petrochemicals are another significant oil market, estimated at $611 billion. In addition, attractive opportunities exist in the oleochemicals (derived from fats and natural oils) market. In 2009, about 9 million metric tons of palm kernel and coconut oils were consumed globally for food and industrial applications such as laundry detergent, soap, and shampoo. Meanwhile, functional fluids (derived from either petroleum or other conventional oils), such as airplane de-icing fluids, must meet strict industry requirements and possess specific physical properties, which increases their market value potential.

Port of Antwer Eur One of the most significant centres of International Trade in Europe, the Port of Antwerp provides extra perk and elevations apart from just a loading and unloading point. Here goods are stored, repacked, distributed and geared up for transport to their final destinations. While 2008 was a record year in terms of the volume handled by the Port, the total freight volume, container volume as well as volume of liquid bulk recorded over 2011's first quarter are all higher than the level reached at the same point in 2008. In the way the company does business, it’s total selfconfidence – delivered with a very British sense of understatement. The Bentley way is to make things appear as effortless as possible. A Bentley is unmistakable – all it takes is a glance at the twin headlights, matrix grille or the high waistline to know one. The paradox of the car is that although it is instantly recognizable,

it takes time and effort to hand-build each one. That’s the assured Bentley hallmark. A hand-built car using the finest quality natural materials takes time. Yet, while others may do things ‘meticulously’ or ‘painstakingly’, Bentley has always been about passion. In fact, their entire reputation rests on the experienced skills and passion of their people, handed down through generations.

Many of their people say that they work on each Bentley as if it were going to be their car. They want to get it right. It’s no wonder that every machinist who creates a set of upholstery signs the back of it with his or her initials.

Bentley Cares for the Earth As a socially responsible manufacturer, Bentley has a comprehensive environmental policy to minimize impact on the local and global environment. As part of their effort, they have already introduced new manufacturing processes; reducing total energy consumption by almost thirty per cent in the past decade. Carbon dioxide emissions in the

manufacturing process have declined by more than twenty per cent, and water use has fallen by more than one fourth. The environmental improvement was a significant achievement, since it coincided with record production and a ten-fold sales growth to more than 10,000 cars annually.

These improvements are now being augmented in the vehicles themselves with an environmental solution that is both technically advanced and practical.
