China Needs a New Economic Strategy It’s been over three decades of rapid growth that China must now reduce the dominance of state companies & promote free markets to achieve its aim of becoming a high-income society. What China needs, is a new economic strategy. It is likely that China would see little slowdown in its economic growth this year even as its government needs to refurbish its economy so that the growth & development over the next two decades can be managed without hurdles. China’s economic growth declined to 8.9 percent after Beijing hiked interest rates & tightened other controls to cool an overheated economy and inflation.

What Should China Do? It is important for China to rely more on markets and the private sector, alter its residency-permit, system and provide basic social protection to all its citizens. The most controversial proposal is likely to be that state enterprises must act more like conventional commercial firms. State firms control & dictate strategic sectors like those of oil, minerals, power & telecoms. China has the ability to direct state enterprises & this has helped China resist the impact of global economic crisis.

Warren Buffet’s Successor Selected Warren Buffett told investors that the Berkshire Hathaway board has identified his successor, lessening some shareholder concern about the future of the company after the Warren Buffet, the 81-year-old investor, steps down as chief executive. Though Buffett did not reveal the name of the next CEO, he believes that this one will be a huge issue for shareholders for years to come. Buffett praised Berkshire managers by name in his letters and said that previously the company had multiple candidates qualified to take over in an emergency. The board’s agreement on one individual suggests the company is increasing its focus on transition.

Warren Buffet’s replacement options Though the successor’s name is not known, there are “two superb back-up candidates as well,” Buffett said on the first page of his letter. The most common guess among Berkshire watchers is Ajit Jain, who runs Berkshire’s reinsurance business. As usual, Buffett and his partner Charlie Munger, lavished praise for him in the letter. Matthew Rose, who started at Berkshire in 2010 after selling the railroad he led to Buffett, will join Nicely and Jain in Buffett’s circle of most trusted managers.

Kellogg Will Widens its Snack Presence by Acquiring Pringles Kellogg is craving for a salty snack. And that’s exactly why the Kellogg Company said it would buy P&G’s Pringles for about $2.7 billion in cash. Kellogg is kind of plunging in on the snack company after an earlier agreement with Diamond Foods fell apart. The food giant, Kellogg, is best celebrated for its array of sweet breakfast items that include Frosted Flakes and Eggo frozen waffles. But it became the world’s second-biggest savory snack maker Wednesday, behind PepsiCo Inc.’s Frito-Lay with a $2.7 billion deal to buy the potato snack brand from Procter & Gamble.
Kellogg’s expectations Kellogg anticipates it will add about 8 to 10 cents per share to its 2012 earnings for each share before accounting for the acquisition and one-time costs and changes to its buyback program. Kellogg already has a dominant position in the snacks category, including fruit snacks, granola bars, cookies, crackers, etc. Pringles will simply add to this dominant market share position in these important growth categories.

Midtown Manhattan office values have gained 87 percent since a mid2009 trough, according to Green Street Advisors Inc. Wal-Mart’s New ‘Great for You’ Label for Healthy Foods The world’s largest retailer said it is reducing the fat, sugar and sodium in many of its privatelabel foods and will more aggressively market other healthy grocery items April onwards. The label limits the amount of total saturated and trans-fats, added sugars and sodium levels a product can contain. Customers will begin to see the new label on products starting in the spring. Leader Talk
I
t’s interesting to note that ‘leadership’ is one of the most sought-after, desired and coveted qualities for people from all backgrounds, professions, races, religions, and regions. Everyone wants to be a leader, not a follower, and everyone wants to learn the precise leadership traits that are going to set him/ her apart from the crowd. There are tons of identified leadership qualities that we all know about: a leader must be positive in his approach, a leader should be a visionary, a leader should be able to affect the change he wishes to make in his team, a leader should inspire and motivate the followers and a leader should be dedicated. These are the leadership traits that we’re all aware of. However, there are more leadership traits that are less recognized, somewhat intangible

and are more “behind the scenes” qualities that actually separate the amazing leaders from the average leaders. These are the leadership traits that all the great leaders have in common. Let’s take a look at them:
Being Open to Learning
‘After all, if you have nothing special or exclusive or “more” to offer, why would people want to follow you?’ October 2011

True, a leader has to know more than others or be more proficient or skilled or talented or insightful to be able to lead people.
to new ideas is the first common trait amongst all great leaders.
But, at the same time, it’s essential to recognize, and appreciate, that a leader cannot know everything. A leader who thinks he knows everything or doesn’t want to learn new things is not going to be effective for very long. Times move ahead at a rapid pace and even someone who is a master at his craft will become obsolete unless he’s willing to learn new things.
‘Knowledge and power and vision cannot be enhanced without learning.’

surprise to most people that a defining trait of all leaders is their high degree of Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EQ). The idea of EQ is a recent phenomenon in business circles, but it dates back far in the pages of history. The best leaders of all time, be it Nelson Mandela or Lady Diana, were people who were well aware of and in tune with their own emotions and feelings, as well as the feelings of people who were around them. Being able to understand every little feeling, predict it and use it to shape your actions and thoughts, as well as those of others around you is one of the most crucial leadership skills.

Controlling The Self Before Others If you ask any of the best known and most loved leaders the one leadership skill that can make or break a leader’s effectiveness, the answer would be the same: selfcontrol. Being able to master oneself is the first step to mastering other people. Selfcontrol manifests in several ways. A great leader is one who is self-aware, cognizant of his faults and strengths, able to regulate his own behavior and actions and capable of keeping himself motivated and focused. A leader who is in control of himself will be able to stick to the plan without any distractions, won’t lose focus, won’t get discouraged by setbacks and will, to put it simply, keep his “eyes on the prize”, always. If you’re prone to giving into your impulses and emotions, if you’re all too proud about your achievements but can’t face criticism over your drawbacks, if you think you don’t have any shortcomings at all, you don’t have a hope of managing a team or a group. A self-aware and controlled leader is always calm, assured, sure of himself and happy to be accountable for his actions as a leader.
Intuitiveness Is Central To Leadership One of the most significant, yet least March 2012

acknowledged, leadership traits that almost all leaders have in common is a strong sense of intuition. Intuitiveness about one’s field, about the possible outcomes of a proposed idea or plan, about the people one is dealing with and about the situation one is in is crucial to performance. A good leader is able to immediately gauge a situation, a person, a plan, a message

social phenomena, forces and currents at work. And with all the shifts in balance, there will always be something new round the corner. The ability to predict the same, look forward to it and be ready to meet every next change and challenge is what binds all leaders together.
“Leaders are those people who are not frazzled by something unexpected, not set back by something unwanted and not stopped by anything.” And being able to perform in any situation requires intuitiveness. and dive straight into the heart of things and appraise them, before even committing to anything. While other leadership skills can be adopted and perfected with time, intuitiveness is often said to be an in-born trait that can only be honed but cannot be procured. Whether you’re a leader in business or in politics, you will be surrounded by people. And where there are people, there will be March 2012
25
It can be as simple as understanding the person across the boardroom table and tailoring your speech to meet with their unspoken desires or something as complex as predicting what millions around the world who you don’t know personally and will never meet want to hear, see and buy, and giving it to them. It is this sixth sense of sorts that separates leaders from managers and other people, and what all leaders have in common.

Oracle’s Acquisition Deal With Taleo -Jason Miller

t’s ‘Second’ for Oracle. Redwood City, California-based Oracle Corp. has made its second acquisition by signing a $1.9 billion acquisition deal with Taleo Corp. Oracle’s Acquisition Deal with Taleo On Thursday, Oracle, the technology giant signed a deal to buy Taleo, a maker of online human resources software, for $1.9 billion. The acquisition is Oracle’s second major purchase of a cloud-related services company. It emphasizes the shift taking place in the enterprise software industry as more businesses turn to the Web to run their operations. Oracle’s focus on building its cloud business is aimed to help assuage the damage they expect to experience if software sales growth slows. Cloud software has been increasingly appealing to consumers, who can save time and money accessing paid for computing power from anywhere in the world they can connect to the internet. March 2012

Well, this definite move comes as a war heats up for control over the fastgrowing cloud computing market.
‘Oracle, the secondlargest software company said that the holders of Taleo would get $46 a share.’ That’s 18 percent higher than Taleo’s closing share price yesterday. It is the latest big investment in cloud computing by Oracle, the world’s No. 2 maker of business management software after Germany’s SAP. Paul D. Hamerman, a

“Human capital management has become a strategic initiative for organizations.” Taleo gives Oracle tools that help companies manage human resources, recruit employees and set compensation. The acquisition deal between Oracle and Taleo may provide a counterweight to SAP’s planned acquisition of talent- management company SuccessFactors Inc. for $3.4 billion. Taleo and SuccessFactors are focusing their energies on the fast growing business of delivering software over the Web, rather than installing programs on customers’ computers. Thomas Kurian, Vice President at Oracle
Forrester analyst said that this acquisition deal is anticipated to be a major move for Oracle. This acquisition continues the company’s efforts to expand their share of the cloud computing market, a recent addition to the industry, where storage, software and computing power can be provided to the consumer from remote data centers all over the world. When it comes to selling traditional software that customers install on their computer systems, Oracle is behind SAP and its billionaire CEO Larry Ellison has been more aggressive in adding cloud-based software offerings over the past few years. Thomas Kurian, an executive vice president at Oracle, said in a statement on the purchase of Taleo, March 2012

Cloud Computing Software Oracle is making use of the acquisitions to build its cloud business. But one wonders why this acquisition would be so useful to Oracle. Well, this acquisition enables Oracle to help blunt the impact of a possible slowdown in software sales growth. Cloud software is meant to appeal to customers seeking to save money by letting them access computing power over the Web. Cloud computing usually refers to providing software, storage, computing power and other services to customers from remote data centers over the web. The demand for cloud-based software has been constantly rising rapidly because the approach allows companies to use new programs faster and at lower

costs than traditional products that are installed at a customer’s own data center. The software is subscription based, sold over the web instead of installed on computers straight from the stores. Both Taleo and the SAP-controlled SuccessFactors had focused on delivering their software as downloads accessible online, rather than as traditional programs installed on the hardware. And HR systems are becoming increasingly critical to next generation ERP systems. Service companies continue to perform in this economy, and the software-asa-service model is gaining in popularity. But many analysts suggest that corporate technology buyers may be wary of Oracle and SAP’s recent efforts, preferring to remain with companies whose products have been proven for quite awhile now. March 2012

Taleo makes software that businesses use to recruit and track job applicants, conduct training and carry out other humanresources functions. Unlike the majority of Oracle’s software, which customers install on computer servers they own and operate, Taleo’s products are delivered online and accessed via a Web browser. It is early days for Oracle and SAP when it comes to cloud computing. Industry leaders believe that many corporate technology buyers are skeptical that home-developed cloud products from Oracle and SAP might hold up against proven products from industry pioneers. Yet, Oracle is now the proud owner of the world’s second-busiest software as a service (SaaS) solution provider.

here might be days when you just don’t feel right. I have had the most tedious jobs of all. Ah! I know everyone thinks the same, and so do you. But seriously, I have been into this profession for almost five years now and have spent nights together writing pieces and rewriting them. Even though writing has always given me pleasure and satisfaction, there had been things all through the way which have kept me bothered day in and day out. I used to be constantly tired, sometimes moody and always craving sugar and I became wildly addicted to ‘energy’ bars. I fell out of balance and I knew that something had to change. Many business magazines kind of frustrate us by providing health tips and exercise regimens for work and then adding:
“You can do this exercise in your office!” But what about those who work in a cube or other small space with absolutely no floor space for Pilates-style stretches that’s not very private. Do you really want your boss and colleagues to wander by right when you’re doing jumping jacks? Activities should not make you forget that the most important thing in this life is health. In this era where people are racing against time, activities seem to have seized your opportunity to take care of your body’s health. You should take in keeping your busy life healthy.

you ever thought why? Its because these are the most essential ones. Start your day with a good breakfast. If you don’t have breakfast, your blood glucose drops so then you will feel weak and hungry all the time. A good breakfast contains of protein, not carbohydrate. It makes your appetite controlled without requiring you to feel less energy when you do your activities. If you use mass transportation, start and end your journey to work one subway/bus stop further away.
‘The extra walking will be great for your health and it will only add a few minutes to each end of your commute.’ If you can walk there in 15 minutes or fewer – you could well avoid using the car. This also contributes to the health of the environment. Stress is one of the most vital ingredients that make you unhealthy. Health tips have become a must to bring some resemblance of order and organizing in our busy lives. Stress management is a serious issue that can be handled just by having some fun. We usually can talk about how we should try to reduce stress and how important is relaxation for health, but we never think of what to do with the stress that already exists in our life. And now, for this we need de stress health tips. There are a few health tips that might have been repeated like a hundred times in quite a lot of food and beverage magazines. But, have March 2012

Even if you only have a few minutes per day, don’t waste it! Take a brisk walk around the block, do sit ups, push-ups or jumping jacks, dance, jump rope or just move! Exercise whenever you get time. A bag with an extra pair of athletic shoes, if you can take a 10 minute walk or stretch break over lunch, would be just great. Keep a container of field green veggies in your refrigerator. Try and include little portions of these greens with every meal that you eat. And why would you do so? Well, eating fresh, raw, green veggies will provide you with an abundance of vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll, all of which can help offset the negative health effects of being overworked and over-stressed. ntist Drill into 14 d Antarctic Lake October 2011
www.industryleadersmagazine.com
After 20 years of drilling effort, the Russian scientists have drilled into the vast, dark and untouched Lake Vostok 2.2 miles below the surface of Antarctica. The Russian scientists have, in fact, drilled down through four kilometers of Antarctic ice to Lake Vostok, apparently the largest sub-glacial lake in Antarctica.
Life in Vostok The lakes in Antarctica are very rich in oxygen. This makes them oligotrophic, as the scientists call it, with levels of the element nearly 50 times higher than to be found in your typical freshwater lake. The high gas concentration is thought to be because of the enormous weight and pressure of the continental ice cap. If life exists in Vostok, it will have to be an extremophile. Extremophile is a life form that has adapted to survive in extreme environments. The organism that is able to withstand high pressure, constant cold, low nutrient input, high oxygen concentration and an absence of sunlight, would fall under this category. Scientists believe the Vostok Lake could be home to cold-loving microbial life, which has adapted to living in total darkness. These organisms likely survive using mechanisms similar to the ever-increasing parade of creatures that have been discovered living in the total darkness of hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean, deriving energy from minerals in seafloor rocks. Geothermal heat under the ice keeps the lake liquid, and its conditions are often described as ‘alien’ because they are thought to be akin to the subterranean lakes on Jupiter’s moon Europa. told a business magazine in Moscow that there was the possibility of a fundamental scientific development. Sergei Lesenkov said, “Analysis of the composition of gas bubbles discovered in the ice above the lake could help climate change research. Because the lower layer was formed 400,000 years ago, from the composition of the gas it is possible to judge the gas composition in the atmosphere 400,000 years ago and during the time that has passed since the formation of the lake. From there, it is possible to identify and forecast certain climatic changes in the future. This is very important.”

Efforts taken by Russian Scientists It has taken over 20 years for the Russians to drill into the lake of Antarctica, operating in some of the most brutal weather conditions in the world. The Russian effort has created scientific excitement about potentially learning some of the long-held secrets of the largest sub-glacial lake in Antarctica, a body of water that wasn’t discovered until the mid-1990s and is the world’s third-largest lake by volume. The Vostok team has been competing against the approach of Antarctica’s cruel winter weather. Extreme cold climate in Antarctica can prevent aircraft from operating, and could maroon the team at the station during the total darkness and bitter temperatures of austral winter. The Russian scientists are facing the risk of an explosion with oxygen and nitrogen trapped below.
“Our scientists completed drilling at a depth of 3,768 meters and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake.” an unnamed source told Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
They are trying to make sure only a small amount of air can escape to avert the risk. The scientists have been drilling 24 hours a day in three shifts as they race to break through before winter descends. While the environmental groups have criticized the work of the Russian Scientists and the chemicals used such as kerosene to keep the hole open, others believe that the site should not be explored but instead left in pristine condition.

ed States and Britain who are following their Russia’s colleagues with their own missions to probe other hidden Arctic lakes, which are among the last of the world’s hidden and unexplored areas. With what’s happening currently at Antarctica’s Lake Vostok, it is being believed that an old theory saying that German Nazis may have built a secret base there as early as the 1930’s has resurfaced. It is thought that towards the end of the Second World War, the Nazis moved to the South Pole and started constructing a base at Lake Vostok. the world in Antarctica.” Alan Rodger, a scientist at the British Antarctic Survey said, “We are terribly interested in what they find. This is a lake that we don’t think has been exposed for 15 million years. Therefore, if there is life there, we’re going to have so many questions. How has it evolved over those years, how has it survived, and what does it look like? Won’t it be exciting to find something completely new on Planet Earth?” in his statement a year back, when a team of researchers was planning on exploring the untouched, 14 million year old lake.

The northern building that would become the Crillon was first occupied by Louis Marie Augustin, Duke of Aurmont, a famous patron of the French Arts. The building was further enhanced by its second owner, the architect Louis-Francois Trouard, who had the Salon de Aigles built in 1775. On February 6, 1778, the building was used as the venue for the official signing of the first treaties between the newly-founded United States and France. oyote Logistics is a third-party logistics company founded by Jeff Silver. Jeff is an MBA graduate of the University of Michigan, and is based in Chicago, Illinois. Jeff Silver founded Coyote Logistics on April 1, 2006. Coyote Logistics is the fastest growing logistics company in the United States of America. Jeff Silver spent 15 years at American Backhaulers, a Chicago freight brokerage. When the company was sold, he wanted to try his hand at replicating its success. After earning a master’s degree from MIT and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, Silver founded Coyote Logistics in 2006. The company specializes in fleet backhaul: using its customers’ trucks to carry loads for other clients on return trips, so that fewer trucks travel empty. It has expanded its network by acquiring two companies. Coyote provides dry, refrigerated and flatbed TL, LTL, IMDL, and logistics management services to Shippers competing in a variety of industry sectors including food and beverage, March 2012

forest products, metals, plastics, consumer products, and government services. Logistics and General Freight Services. After dominating the 3PL logistics industry in the 1980s and 90s with American Backhaulers, Inc., the second largest North American freight brokerage, Jeff Silver took a 5-year hiatus to pursue an MBA from Michigan as well as a Masters in Engineering and Logistics
from MIT. He returned to the scene in 2006 and started Coyote. Jeff Silver said, “We are a team – Everyone is working together to win the game. Not working against each other, but competing together.” Jeff Silver says,
“Coyote owes most of its success, to its intensive trainin program.” When Coyote started in 2006, the industry was stuck with a few complacent providers at the top. We decided this was our opportunity to do it better. Coyote shows people that a 3PL can have a voice, a face, and a name. Coyote recruits the best of the best, trains them like no one else in the industry, and enables them to get it done right. They believe it’s the only way to do business. Coyote doesn’t sleep. Coyote doesn’t stop. Jonathan Sisler, Coyote’s CFO believes, “When we say we are going to do it, we will get it done, no excuses.” Coyote eats your problems so you don’t have to. Their homegrown technology is a game changer for the logistics industry. Coyote is where solutions are born. Coyote’s tenacity means that your business is in good hands. They take pride in what they do. Never quitting or making up excuses. It’s what drives them forward. And they’ll drive you forward with them too. Jonathan Sisler says, “We are building one March 2012

of the fastest growing networks in the U.S. How are we doing this? We show up every day and pour every little bit of ourselves into everything we do.” Marianne Silver, the chief human resource officer says,
“Coyote’s Mantra defines and refines the way the company functions.’’ We are tenacious in spirit. Relentless and unwavering in our goals. We are bold in thought and decisive in action. We think smart, create smart, get smart done. We are changing the meaning of ‘broker’ forMarch 2012

ever. We are re-inventing the logistics experience. We always ‘do the right thing’ and are true to our word. We are family, we are a tribe. Growing and performing like no other in our industry. We are ever moving. We are ‘all year’ round. We are every hour, minute and second. We are driving forward with unstoppable force. We are Powerful Momentum”. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. They work hard. They play hard. Going to work shouldn’t be a grind. It should be something to look forward to. The culture and work environment at Coyote is important to the company. They make sure that their employees come to work happy, enjoy what they do, and work with friends rather than colleagues.

The Cullinan mine is the richest source of rare blue diamonds in the world, and home to the Cullinan Star Cut (TM) – the diamond with a star at its heart. From deep beneath the ground, to the fine art of cutting and polishing, it has emerged as a legend for producing great diamonds. The mighty Cullinan Diamond weighed 3106 carats and was of exceptional purity, D in color, flawless in cut form and a rare type Ha. The Cullinan Diamond is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found. It is still to this day three times larger than any other gem diamond discovered, the next largest being the “Excelsior” diamond at 995 carats discovered at Jagersfontein in 1893. The best of the diamonds indeed come from South Africa. The Prime Minister of Transvaal, Louis Botha, suggested that the diamond be pre-

hining in the light of the setting sun was something that caught the eye of Frederick Wells whilst he was on a routine inspection of the Premier Mine in the Transvaal Colony, South Africa. Frederick Wells worked at the Premier Mine as a superintendent. He was eighteen feet below the surface of the earth, and the shiny object was on the steep wall of the mine a few feet above him. It was 26th of January 1905, when Frederick noticed the light and climbed up the side of the mineshaft and removed what appeared to be a diamond crystal of such a size that he initially suspected that it was piece of glass. The Premier Mine in the Transvaal Colony, South Africa is the heartbeat of the global diamond industry, the birthplace of some of the most flawless, glamorous stones in history, including our namesake, the famous Cullinan Diamond. The gems unearthed at the Cullinan mine have inspired myths and romances; they’ve been possessed by royalty, starlets and adventurers. March 2012

sented as a gift to King Edward VII. Due to lingering rancor after the Boer War, the gift did not sit well with Parliament, which only voted 42 to 19 in favor of its acceptance. After much debate and at Winston Churchill’s urging, the king accepted The Cullinan. In gratitude, Churchill was presented with a replica of the diamond. But, to present the Cullinan to King Edward, it had to be transported to another country. In order that the diamond be transported safely from South Africa to Britain, a team of British detectives travelled on the steamer that would carry the stone. But the ‘diamond’ on the ship was actually a fake. The real diamond was sent to London by parcel post in a plain package. How The Cullinan was to be cut was of primary importance because the stone’s March 2012

greatest value was in the number of stones that could be produced. King Edward gave Asscher Brothers of Amsterdam, the contract to cut and finish the rough diamond. Placing the cleaving blade at the prearranged point, he gave it a blow with his hammer. Snap… and the blade broke. Joseph Asscher’s first attempt to cleave the crystal failed. The stone was unharmed; it had not even moved. Another blade was quickly procured and Asscher struck the stone again. This time it split perfectly, just as he had hoped. He succeeded on his second attempt cutting the diamond into two pieces as planned. Amidst cheers, shouts and pats on the back for a job well done, Asscher fainted. So now there were two stones, weighing 1,977.50 and 1,040 carats, respectively. The largest polished gem from the raw Cullinan stone is named the Cullinan I,
