Editor’s Blog by Carrie-Ann It is certain that Facebook finally will be “going public” after years of being held privately. Ironically, Facebook has been going public with its users’ supposedly privately held information for years, at least according to federal regulators who this week slapped Facebook in the face for violating its users’ privacy. Of course, the week’s two Facebook developments are linked beyond wordplay: oversharing of everybody’s personal data is what will make the Facebook IPO worth so much. The stock-market experts at Business Insider wonder if a Facebook IPO will mean “the end of innovation,” as some set-for-life FB employees may cash out and leave, or give up trying as hard to think up cool stuff like Timeline and Beacon. The article about top countries with the most number of millionaires is ‘numberliciously good’ and informative. It is really interesting to know that the countries that have economically crashed have still maintained to house top number of millionaires. Patrick Alain’s leadership improvement skills could come quite handy to the truly ambitious who wish to reach the summit before time.

Leader Talk
o Improve Leadership -Patrick Alain
As John F. Kennedy once said, “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. Any leader who thinks he knows it all and has seen it all and is through learning is going to lose his effectiveness and strength. October 2011
www.industryleadersmagazine.com
1. Improving Your People Skills Everyone who works under you should feel important, respected and valued. If you are great at what you do but not good at making others feel appreciated, your leadership lacks inspiration. Work on your people skills by involving everyone you work with. Seek the opinion of your employees on various counts, respect their views, have group discussion on various matters and pay attention to each individual. Even the smallest efforts such as remembering each team member’s name, asking after their families, remembering a birthday or passing a compliment about the work or otherwise can make all the difference. And as any successful industry leader will tell you, a happy employee is an effective employee.
2. Pay Attention Followers
To
Your
People can tell when you are genuinely interested and when you are only pretending to be interested. Pay real attention to the people you lead, or you might end up turning them against you or missing out on something important. Develop your listening skills before you work on improving any other traits.

Leader Talk Be alter both mentally and physically when you talk to your team- it is important to listen well as well as adopt a posture and expression that displays a keen interest. While listening, let go of any biases or prejudices you might have about an individual, or your vision of them will always be narrowed. When you are in conversation with your team, eliminate all distractions. Pay close attention and make sure you remember all the important things; you never know when it might come in handy.
3. Get The Preparation Part Down Pat Learn to plan and prepare well. Short-term as well as long-term plans have to be carefully thoughtof, structured and executed. When it comes to succeeding in business, you cannot hope for success if you want to wing it or play it by the ear. You must prepare well in advance to be able to perform well when the time comes. Research the situation, evaluate all possible aspects, divide your goals into realistic milestones and create a specific, outlined task for each member of the team.
4. Work On Inspiring Others
October 2011
Leader Talk
Motivating and inspiring other people is as important as maintaining your own optimizing. Keep each team member in the loop, talk to them about the goals, encourage them on staying focused and make each employee feel valued and challenged at the same time. Keep the bar high, and every time someone passes it, make sure you reward them and appreciate them suitably. Make achieving goals a positive, enjoyable process.

5. Be Likeable: Be The Leader Others Want To Follow Being likeable is very important in the corporate environment because one of the biggest complaints of employees is that their bosses are not nice people or don’t promote a happy, healthy atmosphere at the work place. If you are enthusiastic about the work you are doing, as well as the work your team is doing, it is going to translate into more effort. Show that you are pleased with their effort, supervise all the projects and offer advice or praise as it is needed, and give as much help as you possibly can. The people you lead should see you as someone they want to grow and learn under.
6. Dealing People
With
Difficult
Leader Talk
Learning to discipline your followers when they’re not doing well can be tricky. The best way is to discuss the situation quickly and nip it in the bud as soon as you can. While a problem is still fresh, it can be resolved. Leave it for too long, and you’ll have a habit on your hands. If a particular person is responsible, speak to them alone. It is important to maintain that you respect the person in public, even if you do reprimand them in private. Always give the person a chance to explain, even if you’re not seeking an explanation, because it will make him/ her feel respected. And above all else, don’t get petty or personal. Embarrassing someone who made the mistake is the worst possible way to deal with the situation. www.industryleadersmagazine.com October 2011
7. Take A Leaf Out Of Henry Ford’s Book: Divide The Labor! Henry Ford had it right with his revolutionary Model-T when he decided to break up the task into smaller, more achievable tasks. The ‘assembly line’ concept that changed the world worked on a very simple principle: each goal was broken up into smaller goals that were assigned to different people and parts. The assembly line was a long set of complementary milestones that tied up together into one final goal. Delegating well is possibly the best way to improve leadership skills. If there are people who you can train to do the work you are doing on your own, you can free up all that time and concentrate on other goals that only you can meet. Identify the individual strengths of your teammembers, allocate work accordingly, keep a track of each person’s progress and oversee the entire project. This way you unburden yourself and allow yourself time to do highly specialized work, as well as getting the most out of your employees. It is an empowering move for yourself and your employees.
8. Let History Show You The Way Forward There is no better coach than history, and no better leader than the one who allows the past to teach him. The annals of time are brightened by great men and women who have changed millions of lives, changed the times they lived in as well as changed future generations for years to come. There is much to be learnt from the leaders of the past, for some leadership traits and techniques will remain effective and relevant forever. Whether it is through the works of Mahatma Gandhi or the speeches of Nelson Mandela, or the December 2011

grit and genius of Steve Jobs, one can always learn a skill from watching other strong players. The successes of other great achievers, as well as the failures they overcame to get to those successes can be an illuminating way to learn. Even if you are only running an organization or a team within an organization, studying the decisions of acclaimed industry, political, social and religious leaders from around the world can help you enhance your own strengths, as well as adopt new ones. Zero in on common leadership traits and model your own leadership style after that of history’s greats, and one day, you might be remembered just as reverentially.
9. Give Yourself A Chance To Learn A good leader is one who is willing to grow and learn with his team. Even the best of leaders are followers: allow yourself the opportunity to learn something new or something better from someone who has a skill or a strength that you do not. Also, it is good to return to the basics every once in a while and attend training sessions or workshops or coaching or learning groups, just like the rest of the team. It might seem too simplistic to you at first, but it always pays to touch base with the roots. You might just revisit a great old idea or technique you’d forgotten, or you might learn something new. It will also enable you to watch your team as they grow and learn, thus giving you an insight into their development.
10. Be True To Yourself
If you are constantly bothered by a bad feeling or a sense of anxiety that nags you through the day, you will hardly be able to work yourself, let alone get others to work. The subconscious mind is a very powerful thing and can completely destroy your career if you choose to fight it. Make choices that are in tune with your values so that you are never at loggerheads with yourself. Integrity is key to being an effective leader, and it makes an already tough road much smoother! Leader Talk
One of the biggest mistakes leaders make is to try to ignore their own morals, values and set of ethics in an attempt to move forward or adopt new practices at work. Remember, as a leader you must focus on the future, but you cannot do so at the cost of your own conscience. If you try to stifle that little voice in your head or turn the other way when you come across something that disturbs you, it is going to affect your work and your leadership style.

A new report from Pike Research projects that the LED share will reach 52 percent of the commercial lighting market by 2021.
Green Commercial Buildings are Turning on the Light One of the ways that commercial buildings are going green is through the lighting. Light-emitting diodes, or LED light bulbs, are gaining significant momentum as an alternative to incandescent and fluorescent lighting in commercial buildings, particularly as the cost of LED lighting technology is starting to go down. For that same reason, LED light bulbs are gaining popularity in residential buildings. A new report from Pike Research projects that the LED share will reach 52 percent of the commercial lighting market by 2021. The same report also says that LED lighting costs will be reduced by 80 percent to 90 percent during the next decade. Since LED light bulbs are considered the greenest and most efficient light bulbs for commercial buildings, a lot of research is currently taking place to make them as affordable as possible to commercial buildings. Pike Research also projects that the global market for commercial lighting will reach $42 billion in 2011 and see a peak of nearly $54 billion in 2012.
The Energy Efficient Way: As high-performance buildings use less operating energy, embodied energy has assumed much greater importance – and is expected to make up as much as 30% of the overall life cycle energy consumption. Studies such as the U.S. LCI Database Project show buildings built primarily withOctober wood2011 will

have a lower embodied energy than those built primarily with brick, concrete or steel. To reduce operating energy use, high-efficiency windows and insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors increase the efficiency of the building envelope, (the barrier between conditioned and unconditioned space). Another strategy, passive solar building design, is often implemented in low-energy homes. Designers orient windows and walls and place awnings, porches, and trees to shade windows and roofs during the summer while maximizing solar gain in the winter. In addition, effective window placement (daylighting) can provide more natural light and lessen the need for electric lighting during the day. Solar water heating further reduces energy costs. Onsite generation of renewable energy through solar power, wind power, hydro power, or biomass can significantly reduce the environmental impact of the building. Power generation is generally the most expensive feature to add to a building.

There are more and more green commercial buildings out there, but there’s also a lot of commercial buildings that aren’t. It’s also not necessary to build a green commercial building from scratch. Sometimes, just some changes to a present commercial building can make a huge difference. According to a report from the U.S Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory released two weeks ago, green commercial buildings, compared to commercial buildings in general:

The report specifically looked at 22 green federal buildings and compared their results against national averages. Although most of the buildings were built in the 2000s, some of these green commercial buildings were constructed as early as 1900, showing that it doesn’t take a brand new commercial building to make it a green commercial building.
U.S. Green Building Council’s Applications Lab This App Lab is designed to give LEED project teams’ easy access to compatible software, some of which is already in use currently. These apps are fully integrated with the entire LEED Online project management system. The Lab was launched merely with eight applications but USGBC anticipates that it will quickly come up with a lot more. USGBC Senior Vice President Scott Horst explained quoting: “The LEED App Lab has been highly anticipated as a way to leverage multiple partners to expand the presence of green building. The potential leverage points are so numerous that we really cannot anticipate the full impact of the App Lab. All we are sure of is that we have created a place to ignite the flames of true innovation and growth. LEED already embodied innovation. Now we are pushing LEED toward an entirely new world of possibilities.”
Green Commercial Buildings and the Global Market Pike Research also has research on the global outlook of green commercial buildings, and one of the things noted in a report released last week is that national governments are doing more to make the commercial buildings in their countries more green.

With this acquisition, AES’ operations now span 27 countries across five continents, with 100 power generation plants that have the capacity to deliver 40,000 megawatts of electricity. The AES DPL acquisition also ends the 100-year existence of DPL-owned Dayton Power and Light Co. (DP&L) as an independent company.
The AES DPL merger will require AES to pay $30 in cash for each outstanding common share of DPL stock, with those checks going out to shareholders this week. Terms of the AES DPL Merger First announced in April of this year, the AES DPL merger was not completed without specific requirements and agreements. The AES DPL merger will require AES to pay $30 in cash for each outstanding common share of DPL stock, with those checks going out to shareholders this week. AES also agreed to assume DPL’s $1.2 billion in debt. Agreements that were outlined by the Public Utilities Commission include: • AES will not pass along to DP&L ratepayers any December 2011

expenses directly related to the negotiation, approval, and closing of the merger. • AES will keep DP&L’s operating headquarters in Dayton for at least five years after the merger. • DP&L will not implement layoffs that would reduce the utility’s approximately 1,500-person work force to less than 90 percent of that employment level for at least three years. • DP&L will commit $700,000 to Dayton for economic development, $400,000 to help low-income customers with energy costs, and $75,000 for the Ohio Hospital Association’s energy efficiency and energy demand reduction programs. What hasn’t been finalized in the AES DPL merger is whether or not AES will retain any or all of the DPL executives who helped negotiate the merger in the first place. Paul Barbas, current president of DPL, and 10 other senior DPL executives could receive as much as $41.9 million combined in parting payments if AES asks them to leave the company. The AES DPL merger should also not affect the pensions of DP&L retirees, because the parent company DPL contributed $80 million to the pension plan in 2010 and 2011 and it is currently meeting federal requirements for funding levels.

at increasing shareholder value by means of earnings growth and the initiation of a dividend payment effective 2012. It also plans to accomplish its goal with improvements in operating performance and with the help of new plants built in the second half of 2011.
Stocks and Credit Go Up After AES DPL Merger Even though AES is paying out the outstanding shares of DPL stock, the stock of AES has improved since the AES DPL merger. AES shares rose 43 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $11.52 in midday trading the day the merger was completed. Moody’s Investors Service also upgraded AES’ credit rating because of the AES DPL merger.

Facebook going Public
What Does Facebook Need this Money For? If this is true, the Facebook IPO gives the company a valuation of $100 billion, twice as big as companies like HP and 3M. Although, it’s hard at this point to monetize and to measure the assets of a social media company for the purpose of going public (hasn’t really been done before), there’s not denying that a Facebook IPO would simply be huge.
Well, one of the most speculated reason is that that Facebook is raising the money for the purpose of acquisitions. Two companies that have come up that would be of interest to Facebook are Zynga and Twitter. Acquiring Zynga would be good fit for Facebook, since the gaming firm is the creator of Farmville and Cityville, two of the most popular games on Facebook. This acquisition would also give

Facebook IPO is supposed to happen. Federal rules require companies with at least $10 million in assets and more than 500 shareholders to disclose its quarterly financial results and other details. The reporting requirement kicks in 120 days after the fiscal year in which a company exceeds the shareholder threshold for the first time. Facebook’s fiscal year ends on New Year’s Eve, so it would have until late April 2012 to comply with this requirement, having hit the threshold this year.
Facebook a new source of revenue. Acquiring Twitter would put Facebook in a much better position to compete against Google and better establish itself in the realm of social networking, as Google’s new social network Google+ has grown to 40 million members since its launch in July.

However, a conclusion can’t be reached about the Facebook IPO and what the company will do when it goes public without seeing the company’s financial numbers, and the company’s financial numbers can’t be seen until Facebook goes public. Facebook is larger than every country in the world besides two, and that’s a vast amount of people that need to be pleased. Is the Facebook IPO a Good Thing? Yes, for two reasons. First, of all the Internet companies that have gone public in the past 12 months, only LinkedIn has remained above its IPO price. Both Groupon and Pandora have fallen their prices. Like LinkedIn, Facebook is a social network who’s millions and members not only feed off of Facebook, but feed off of each other. It’s a self-sustaining business model that will operate and grow, whether the site has 80 members or 800 million members. Technology and Internet companies do not have a long history of going public, since there haven’t been that many that have gone public.
Consider how angry members get when Facebook makes changes to the interface, or their reaction to its privacy policies. If a Facebook IPO shifts its focus to shareholders, members will react that the social networking giant will pay a hefty price. Third, Facebook’s worldwide ad revenue is expected to hit $3.8 billion this year, up from $1.86 billion a year earlier. As for total revenue, Facebook will generate revenue of $4.27 billion this year. Facebook is certainly growing, and has been growing for some time. Some have speculated that Facebook has it a critical mass with the 800 million users, that going public may sink the company once growth begins to slow down. But, those speculations are wrong and it has plenty of room for growth. There’s rumor of an HTC Facebook smartphone in the works, and penetration of the mobile market is something
Just because two companies aren’t doing well doesn’t mean that Facebook, or any other tech or Internet company that wants to come along, won’t find a way to do well. Second, with 800 million members, the fact that Facebook will soon have shareholders may be a good thing. Facebook is larger than every country in the world besides two, and that’s a vast amount of people that need to be pleased. Although, there have been problems in the past with companies focusing on their shareholders instead of their customers, Facebook’s shareholders will care about the customers because there’s so many of them. that Facebook has only scratch the surface on. If Facebook isn’t making its own smartphone, there’s always opportunity for the company to improve the mobile offerings of Facebook itself. Mobile technology itself is still very new, with plenty of room for a company like Facebook to do something extraordinary with it. Let it be made clear that Facebook has not yet made a decision on the Facebook IPO. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has expressed his reluctance to do a Facebook IPO, and wants to keep the company private as long as possible. A Facebook IPO of $10 billion would be the largest IPO by any technology or Internet company. If there does end up being a Facebook IPO, hopefully it will be as revolutionary for the company as the company has been to society.

NASA launched an Earth-watching satellite on 28th October 2011, a year after its planned launch. The primary purpose of the satellite is to monitor climatic and weather changes and provide enhanced weather forecasts. The NASA satellite was launched in a Delta 2 rocket a little earlier than 3:00 a.m. on Friday, from the coast of California. It took the satellite approximately an hour to detach from the rocket after it was launched, and to travel into an orbit 500 miles over Earth. The satellite is one of the many that are already revolving around the earth, gathering data about the atmosphere, land and water bodies on the earth. The satellite launched on Friday is the most advanced of the lot, with four completely original gadgets that will be responsible for noting highly accurate and defined observations. The satellite, which resembles a small SUV in size, is expected to change the face of weather forecasts. The work of the NASA satellite will not just be limited to studying the climate and predicting weather conditions, for it will also be responsible for keeping a tab on the changing state of the ozone, observing the Arctic sea ice and analyzing wildfires and volcanic ash.
in 2010 as a result of the program exceeding the set budget. According to the original program, the satellite had to be launched in the year 2006, but policy and technical difficulties prevented NASA from sticking to the original deadlines. Now that the satellite is in orbit, great things are expected to come of it. Project scientists from the mission have stated that they are very hopeful and excited to see the satellite’s findings, as the collected data is going to be of a much more superior level than that being provided by the older satellites. Meteorologists from NOAA are hoping to use the data collected by the satellite to better predict and appraise sudden and severe weather conditions such as cyclones and tornadoes. Climate researchers on the other hand are interested in gaining more insight into more permanent climatic phenomena and studying climate changes. NASA invited several Twitter users to attend the launch of the satellite at the Vandenberg Air Force Base. The satellite was launched amidst perfect weather conditions.
The project has met with several hurdles along the way, and the satellite launch that took place on Friday was the end result of a hard road for the NASA team. The project for this NASA satellite is said to have cost $1.5 billion. corporations in the US. Bechtel has been in the forefront of engineering and construction for more than 110 years, since its founding in 1998. What began as a railroad-grading operation in the Oklahoma Territory has grown into a multinational company with hundreds of projects around the world. One of Bechtel’s recent, but signature, projects is the Athen’s metro infrastructure that was prepared for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. During those games, spectators, personnel, and volunteers used public transit to travel to and from the more than 30 sports venues. Hundreds of thousands traveled through Metro stations and tunnels that Bechtel completed in 2003. However, long before Athens won its bid for the 2004 Olympic Games, it was clear that the city needed a better way to move people around. Athens built one of Europe’s first urban rail grids in 1869, but it could not keep up with the country’s swift urbanization. About 4 million people, almost 40
percent of the Greek population, live in the capital. The 10-year design, construct, commission, and operate project — one of the most ambitious public works projects in Greek history — began in 1992. Few believed it could be completed by 2004.Bechtel oversaw the work of a multinational consortium — including 22 Greek, French, and German companies — committed to preserving antiquities and archaeological relics encountered in the process of excavating in soft soil, in an already-congested central city, under centuries-old structures.

Benchmark Hospitality International (Benchmark) was founded in 1980 through the distinct vision of Burt Cabañas. Mr. Cabanas emigrated from Cuba to the United States in 1957 at age 10, along with his mother and sister, following the death of his father. The family’s stay in the US was intended to be temporary; however, once Castro took power in Cuba, Burt and his family became “permanent exiles” in their new adopted homeland, never returning to Cuba. It has set the standard for integrity, quality, and service in management and marketing services for resorts, conference centers, conference hotels and golf clubs.
Early on in its quest to become the company we are today, the company developed a philosophy for its endeavors, a formula for success that is found at each of its properties, throughout its literature and as the foundation of its logo.
For over 30 years, Burt Cabañas, Benchmark, and the hospitality industry have been indelibly linked through the building or repositioning of countless hotels and resorts, through the development of the global conference center industry, and by serving on university boards, including Cabañas’ alma mater, Florida International University. During this time,Benchmark has learned a great deal about our business, about what makes a great conference center, hotel or conference resort and what doesn’t. Led by Burt Cabañas, Benchmark is today the composite of thousands of people who serve a growing list of guests every day. The company’s culture is central to its management philosophy. The company’s stated purpose is “to provide an entrepreneurial environment where determined
people dare to create, share, and build futures.”Benchmark’s vision is today as was when Mr. Cabañas launched the company in 1980 -- to provide career opportunities to individuals who have a positive service attitude and the determination to succeed. Benchmark realized early on that the core function of a conference hotel or conference resort was to provide an environment that would facilitate idea exchange, problemsolving and retention of learning. The accomplishment of this threefold task within a professional business environment, free from the distractions and interruptions of daily business life, requires that the property be designed, managed and marketed to meet the specific needs of a meeting planner’s objectives for the company’s meeting.
As our guest, you will enjoy a oneof-a-kind experience, whether you are staying in the magnificent Rocky Mountains, on a sunwashed Hawaii shore or in the heart of a city’s arts district. Benchmark proudly manages a portfolio of independent hotels, resorts and conference centers, each with a distinctive setting, architecture and personality. Benchmark believes that everyone deserves to feel welcome, wherever they are. At Benchmark, everyone matters, and that’s a philosophy that’s easily found in its hotels, resorts, and conference centers. Many metropolitan hotel properties and resort destinations do not wish to meet these criteria, nor do they plan the facilities or management focus to accommodate them. It is an area of specialization that requires a unique and dedicated approach. The Company also has a portfolio of internawww.industryleadersmagazine.com October tional2011 exploration opportunities.
Talisman is committed to conducting business safely, in a socially and environmentally responsible manner, and is included in the Dow Jones Sustainability (North America) Index. Talisman is listed on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchanges under the symbol TLM. Talisman has a diversified, global portfolio of oil and gas assets. The Company believes this portfolio will provide growth from shale development in North America and project developments in Southeast Asia, and result in sustainable free cash flow from the North Sea. Talisman is also focused on building its international exploration portfolio. Talisman investigates strategic acquisitions, dispositions and other business opportunities on an ongoing basis, some of which may be material. Approximately half of the Company’s production is liquids and half is natural gas. In 2011, Talisman plans to spend approximately US$4 billion on exploration and development activities, excluding non cash capital items of US$370 million. The Company has the flexibility to adjust its capital spending to pursue opportunities and respond to a changing economic outlook.

els of environmental planning and protection than the Maranon Basin in northwestern Peru. To minimize the impact of Talisman’s exploration programs on the local ecosystem, the Company used sound industry management practices. No roads were built as materials for the seismic programs were brought in by helicopter or barge. More than 400 local labourers from 18 surrounding indigenous communities and five indigenous federations were hired for the Block 101 seismic program. In addition, five community members were hired and trained as environmental observers to verify Talisman’s compliance with agreed environmental protection standards, ensure operations were conducted in a transparent way and allow concerns to be effectively communicated to operations managers. Talisman also contracted an environmental service company to provide additional assurance that the contractor was carrying out the seismic program according to Talisman’s HSE expectations.
the operations and allow for rapid recovery of the affected area. A thorough abandonment and restoration program was also implemented, including revegetation of deforested areas (such as camps and helipads) with native species and long-term commitments for follow up monitoring. In addition, endangered species identification training was provided to all crew members to minimize potential impacts on surrounding plants and animals. Independent Peruvian environmental consultants helped ensure Talisman’s
“Wherever we operate, we endeavour to understand local environmental sensitivities and plan our activities accordingly.” During Block 101 seismic operations, Talisman ensured minimal disturbance during line clearing. Minimizing Environmental Impacts in the Western US and Canada. In 2007, Talisman consulted with multiple stakeholders prior to its exploration programs in the western US. The exploration work required approvals from multiple levels of government as well as consent from local landowners. In addition, the Company consulted several interest groups. The resulting agreements consider a variety of needs and perspectives, including impacts on trail wildlife such as elk, pronghorns, raptors and grouse. Other needs were addressed by altering traditional designs for future facilities like incinerators and ensuring no onsite sumps will be used Since 2005, Talisman has implemented the Alberta government’s Sustainable Resource Development’s Area Operating Agreement (AOA) process. What was once a small pilot project has expanded into a tool which is used for almost all public or Crown land in Alberta. In 2007, Talisman became the first energy company to implement a provincial AOA, improving efficiency and ensuring more coordination of industrial development, reduction of conflict with other stakeholders and management of cumulative impacts of the Company’s activities.
The AOA process connects Talisman’s philosophies with the ultimate objective of Integrated Landscape Management (ILM) on Crown or public land. This coordinated development is especially important in the more environmentally sensitive areas of the province in which Talisman operates, such as Caribou Management Areas.
A Dynamic Environment Globally, the economic recovery has been remarkably robust, with surprising strength in demand for oil products. Uncertainties remain, however, and the strength and durability of the recovery remains at least a little uncertain. In North America, they have seen a dislocation between natural gas and oil prices, as a result of the success of shale drilling. Longer term, this abundant source of clean energy will surely play a major role in the US power sector. However, to secure such a future, their industry must do a better job of communicating the environmental benefits, the security and longevity of shale gas to consumers and regulators.
October 2011
www.industryleadersmagazine.com
For now, gas in North America remains oversupplied, and it may take another 18-24 months to normalize. However, we believe oil prices to be underpinned due to the robust demand, and tightening spare capacity balances. We are confident that Talisman is well positioned in such dynamic conditions, with a diverse portfolio, and flexibility in our capital programs.
Strong Operating Performance Production for the year came in ahead of expectations, with strong underlying growth from
the second half onwards, fuelled by growing shale volumes and new production records in Southeast Asia. With the portfolio now set for ongoing production growth and continuing improvement in the cost base, Talisman is now positioned for sustainable, profitable growth. Looking forward, our portfolio now supports ongoing growth from North American shale (natural gas and liquids) and Southeast Asia. This is underpinned by a decade of sustainable (mostly liquids) production from their North Sea assets and conventional properties in North America. Talisman replaced 164% of production with proved reserves in 2010, excluding the impact of price revisions. They continue to reduce our replacement costs, which were down 35% over 2009, with a two-year reduction of 63%. The cost to replace proved developed producing reserves was 54% lower than in 2009. This underpins improving profitability into the future. Net income was up in 2010, reflecting improved operating performance, higher commodity prices and gains on financial instruments. Cash flow was lower due to lower cash proceeds from derivatives and higher cash taxes. However, the key take away is that the underlying performance and cost base of the company continues to improve.

TNT Founded in Australia in 1946, TNT steadily developed an enviable reputation in the contract logistics market. In 1996 it was acquired by Dutch postal and telecom company KPN; two years later the telecom and postal divisions of KPN were separated. The new company, called TNT NV, was then organized around three divisions: TNT Logistics, TNT Express and TNT Post. At the end of 2005 TNT announced its intention to sell its contract logistics activities and in the autumn of 2006 TNT Logistics was sold to affiliates of Apollo Management LP. The company was renamed CEVA Logistics in December 2006. The Ecosse Spirit ES1 The Ecosse Spirit ES1 was just officially unveiled recently at the US MotoGP race at Laguna Seca. Motorcycle News got a sneak peek at the bike, the “F1 bike on two wheels, just prior to the unveiling. For a cool $3.6 million, one lucky rider will get the chance to build the racing bike of his or her dreams, the Ecosse Spirit ES1. ECOSSE SPIRIT was formed by the two exceptional U.K. F1 engineers and the U.S. designer/ manufacturer to bring extraordinary concepts to the motorcycle world. Their first model, ES1, is set to make motorcycle history. The design drivers behind the bike are relatively simple: light

weight, low aerodynamic drag and improved rider ergonomics. But achieving profound improvements in all areas has required genuinely inventive steps to bring F1 technology to the motorcycle world. Using state-of-the-art CAD, FEA and CFD software, the ES1 features: - Integrated & fully stressed engine/ gearbox - Novel Suspension design - Optimization of aerodynamics, ergonomics and packaging
The ESI has a frameless chassis with unique suspension design at both ends of the bike. The front and rear suspension use torsion springs fitted on the swing arm pivots and F1 spec dampers mounted directly between swingarm and engine.
Sure it’s a racing bike, but a few modifications could make it street legal, no problem. I know it might be a tad cold outside to start thinking about motorcycles, but the Ecosse Spirit ES1 is hot enough to warm you up a little. Sure it’s a racing bike, but a few modifications could make it street legal, no problem. And what street wouldn’t be better off when graced with its aerodynamic, eyecatching design?. The Ecosse Spirit ES1 was introduced with great fanfair. The bike was somewhat revolutionary due to its chassis design, which allows the rider to ride lower on the bike and keep his knees together. The carbon fiber body is extremely lightweight, which increases maneuverability and speed.
Motoczysz: Usually the same set of principles for making cars go fast work the same when applied to motorcycles. However, there are fundamental differences which need to be taken into account when the highest performance is required. For instance, with an automotive chassis, race cars generally want to be as stiff as possible while this is not always the case when there are only two contact patches on the ground. This is because lateral flex allows some “give” when the bike is leaned over. Some also believe that some extra steering input is given by the rear tire when the chassis flexes, allowing the motorcycle to handle better when leaned over. Another area where motorcycles differ from cars is aerodynamics. Because of October the basic relationship, width is www.industryleadersmagazine.com 2011 rider\bike crucial when it comes to motorcycle racing
aerodynamics. The height is almost preset by the rider; you can only crouch so much! But, the width of the bike allows designers the ability to shorten the bike by shortening the distance between the riders knees. Motoczysz has taken this idea and run with it. They believe that by halving the engine width by arranging the four cylinders in a staggered “V pattern that they can make up the lower output they will achieve by adding a coupling set of gears on the crankshaft with the increase in aerodynamic efficiency that the design will allow. They are also building in adjustable lateral suspension movement in their innovative front fork arrangement.
Motoczysz is not the only would-be manufacturer that plans on pushing the boundaries of motorcycle design. Ecosse Spirit has taken standard motorcycle design and thrown it in the garbage with much of the design of their new ES1 bike. Their bike design does not have a conventional chassis at all. The arrangement allows them to place the rider lower on the bike and keep his knees close together. This design forced them to move the pivot of the swingarm up from its normal placement. One constant between the two radical bike designs is extensive use of carbon fiber for the bodywork and chassis components. After
October 2011
www.industryleadersmagazine.com
all, the lighter you can make the bike, the less power you require to stay competitive. Chassis design for bikes is a bit of a black art and might allow the most room to grow from where the industry is at now. Innovative designs like these could allow them to vault to the front of the podium, or, fall flat on their faces. We look forward to finding out which one it will be!
Ducati Desmosedici RR: The Ducati Desmosedici RR is a limited production road-legal version of the Desmosedici MotoGP racebike.
Ducati made 1,500 Desmosedici models for public purchase. The bike was launched at the 2006 Italian MotoGP event. The entire 500 unit allocation for the United States sold out in five hours. In 2004, Ducati announced that a low volume bespoke replica of the Desmosedici would be available beginning in 2006. Termed the Desmosedici RR (Racing Replica), it was claimed to be the first true road replica of a MotoGP racing bike. Priority for ordering was given to Ducati 999R owners, with production projected at one bike per day at a retail cost ofUS$72,500 and GBÂŁ40,000.

The price included a three year warranty and servicing, cover, and a racing kit including a raceonly exhaust system, a slip-on muffler, and complementary fuel and ignition mapping in a “race ECU. It also included enough sponsor stickers to fill both sides of the bike. The bike was eventually launched at the 2006 Italian MotoGP event at Mugello, with production beginning in December 2007 and the first customer orders delivered from January 2008.

The Heretic offers an array of options and trim levels (ranging in price from $49,800 to $140,000+), allowing customers to specify a machine with everything they need, and nothing they don’t. The minimalist frame highlights (in chromoly, or titanium on the top-of-the-line model) the massive V-Twin engine (capacities from 1640cc to 1966cc are offered, some with machined-from-billet blocks, a la MotoGP prototypes), and the details are just as impressive, with nearly every component large and small designed and manufactured in-house using precision CNC-machining processes. While there would be a lot of people ready to throw down this kind of cash to get one of the 100 Heretics Ecosse plans to produce, the Heretic is interesting both because of it’s beauty and as an example of what could be done with a noholds-barred, clean-sheet, high-budget approach to designing a modern street bike.
