Our August issue has a noble intention of motivating aspiring CEOs around the world and we do not wish to fuel the outrage over corporate greed by publishing heavy compensation drawn by the top executives. While recession and criticism have slowed the growth of corporate pay in recent years, there were a few executives who were stopped by nothing. The cover story is an elaborative write-up about a few executives who have made it to the top and are earning what they deserve. The leadership article gives an account of the rise of great leaders of the world. Strategic takeover of Nextwave by AT&T is featured in Mergers & More while we have tried to emphasize more on development and generation of green energy by including it in Wow quotient and Numberliciously good. All this and more‌ Regards,

Simultaneously, president Jintao said: “We should oppose the practices of the big bullying the small the strong domineering over the weak & the rich oppressing the poor,” underlying Chinese pure intentions. The report: The government of Japan in its monthly

The report has strengthened the warning on the weakening of the Chinese or the US economic data as the exports of Japan begin to slow down with time. The cabinet office in their latest reports stated that even the economy of the country is recovering moderately with help from the demands of reconstruction; there are some problems that continue to prevail. The report arrived soon after the Bank of Japan had also made its assessment of the economic conditions.

There’s something about the quality of a great leader that makes him or her stand out no matter the situation or the crowd. History’s greatest leaders have all had that quality, though they may not have all started out as leaders of many or even very few people. Industry Leaders Magazine

Aug 2012

US president Dwight D. Eisenhower, for example, started out World War II as an obscure colonel who was recognized for his ability to think outside the box, though that that wasn’t what such thinking was called back then, but for little else. However, great leaders always seem to rise to the occasion when most needed, and Eisenhower certainly did that during the war. Never having held a single elective office in his entire life, once he’d retired from the military as a five-star General of the Army (one of only a very few in the history of the country) Eisenhower became the Republican nominee for president after Harry Truman’s second term, going on to easily win office. “The Eisenhower Years,” as his two-term presidency is often called, are now looked back upon as a serene time in US history and a period of strong growth.

inspiring us with many words and deeds. These leaders fall into a couple of different categories; the traditional types found in politics and business and nontraditional leaders seen throughout society and heading up various organizations or groups dedicated to the betterment of humankind. Traditional leaders, as always, seem to garner the lion’s share of the publicity but that may be because we’ve always thought of leaders in areas like business, politics and associated activities as being the men and women we look to first whenever a great crisis or other matter of importance arises. Certainly, these men and women have always seemed to have been ability to rise to the occasion and it’s no different in this new millennium than it was back in Eisenhower’s day or in Abraham Lincoln’s or George Washington’s day.

Leaders Really Around Us

The point is, whether the crisis creates the leader or the leader is there and just waiting for the crisis it matters little. What matters is that these leaders seize the moment, inspire us all to greater things and continue

to do so consistently and with a purpose.

The Greatest Leaders Inspire Us Greatly One of the greatest US leaders of the 1960s, and who headed up no government or any political movement, was Martin Luther King Jr. His genius lay in the fact that he was able to harness the inchoate anger of African-Americans of the day, who faced brutal prejudice and institutional segregation in many parts of the American South and even in other areas of the country, and turned that anger to one of the greatest social movements of the 60s; the fight for civil rights and justice for all. That Martin Luther King Jr. did all this in a calm, steady voice that held no anger towards those against whom he was protesting --

‘to the point where he even strongly stood for nonviolence against all’ -- was historic and almost awe-inspiring. His “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” which he penned while being locked up in a Birmingham, Alabama jail for protesting against Jim Crow laws in that southern city, stands today as one of the greatest single letters to a people, in advocating for peaceful resistance and social change, in US history. In other parts of the world, the great Indian leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, who worked tirelessly to replace British rule in India

(known as the Raj), eventually succeeded in seeing the British turn over control of its former Crown colony, unfortunately only living long enough to see the culmination of his dreams before falling at an assassin’s hands in January 1948. Gandhi was a relentless campaigner for the rights of fellow Indians living under British rule, though he was just as tireless in advocating for peaceful, nonviolent resistance to the British, often enduring savage beatings at British hands before becoming a recognized leader of the entire Indian effort to free itself from British colonial administration.

Gandhi, an extremely wise man, inspired by words and deeds the efforts of his people, and today we would call that “leading by example.” Great leaders all seem to instinctively know

that in order to be a great leader great effort must issue forth, including setting the example and the pace for the people whom they lead. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi (though his given name was Mohandas, Gandhi was most popularly known by the Hindu name “Mahatma) knew that if a movement were to succeed the leaders of that movement had to demonstrate supreme commitment to the ideals of the movements that they were in fact heading up.

Microsoft today is probably one of the most well-known companies in the world and one or another of its products probably sit on 95% of all computers in use nowadays. John Paul II, in his great struggle in the 1980s and 90s against communism, especially after he was nearly killed in 1981 by an assassin’s bullet, stands as one of the most important religious leaders of the last

hundred years. Even in his final days, as he lay on his deathbed, he demonstrated a respect for the dignity of life that was peerless, entering into the veiled world that lay beyond with grace and in full public view. Even millions, or perhaps even billions, of the world’s non-Catholics mourned his passing because he was a religious and a social justice icon, standing up for the rights of the oppressed in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia. Since she got her television start in the 1980s,

Oprah Winfrey has inspired more people in more ways than almost any other celebrity on TV in the last quarter century. Her talk shows have given more guests a chance at worldwide fame than any other television outlet ever has. If she even mentions the title of a book on one of her network shows, for example, the book becomes an instant New York Times bestseller. But Winfrey is more than just a superstar celebrity herself, because her tireless efforts and support on behalf of the poor and oppressed in Africa and in America have helped to inspire more people to pitch in and do what they can then most any other celebrity does through their own words or deeds. Again, Winfrey demonstrates why it’s necessary for great leaders to lead from the front, so to speak.

It Doesn’t Matter Whether They’re Made or Born There’s always going to be a debate about whether the circumstances make the leader or the leader is made well before then, or perhaps even born well before then, and is the “right person at the right time.” Whether leaders are born or made, it’s fortunate for us that all of them seem to have an almost preternatural ability to know what to say and do to inspire those around them, even if it’s only for that brief, shining moment required of leaders in certain instances before they fade into the background yet again. What we know for certain, though, is that all of us are better for having them in our midst when they’re needed most.

Green is the New Thing Recycling is sometimes looked at askance by people not really aware of just what it actually is or how easy it can be to engage in. Ever since the early 1970s, when the ecology movement first gained steam after the inaugural “Earth Day celebration, recycling has come to be more prominent or at least more well known by most people, whether they actually recycle or not. Industry Leaders Magazine

What’s known about the benefits of recycling are that it can actually improve the environment while stretching out available supplies of almost anything, including metals and plastics as well as various kinds of petroleum and woodbased products. Recyclebank (www.recyclebank.com), a New York-headquartered company with offices in London, UK, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of a host of innovative green advocacy companies looking to not only turn a profit but also turn the world a little bit greener with every recycling transaction, no matter how small, everyday people take when it comes to recycling most anything.

Recyclebank Creating New Recycling Frontiers Founded in 2004 by Ron Gonen and Patrick Fitzgerald and now headed up by Jonathan Hsu, an international businessman with extensive experience in media and digital marketing and advertising,

vice and how-to tips on accomplishing that goal. This is just one facet of the wide-ranging environmental effort that the company seeks to create across the United States and the world, starting in

is about right when it comes to an almost wholly Internet-based business. The company is on a constant lookout for ways to get its members points, on the theory that rewarding people for engaging in laudatory behavior, such as acting in a more environmentally friendly way, can do far more good than hectoring them or guilt tripping them into sorting their garbage into recyclable and nonrecyclable items. Recyclebank seeks to replace the sometimes stifling or heavy hand of government mandated “green behaviors” with something that’s vastly more friendly seeming and easy to appreciate. The company is also working vigorously to establish partnerships with various cities, counties and towns in the United States and in the United Kingdom, in hopes of driving up recycling rates by local residents. Historically, recycling by the citizenry hasn’t been high on the priority list of many, though that attitude has been changing in this new millennium. Recyclebank hopes to be at the vanguard of this change in attitude, hoping to inculcate an appreciation for recycling, ensuring that members are amply rewarded for their efforts, and eventually generating serious and sustained revenues that benefit anticipated shareholders as well as society. The company is one of a number of green enterprises that belong to a class of businesses known as “social enterprises,” for their orientation towards improving society while also improving the bottom line.

New York City, London and Philadelphia. Recyclebank itself is privately held and there are currently between 180 and 200 actual employees of the firm, which

Recyclebank itself doesn’t own a single piece of recycling equipment or even a truck. Rather, it makes use of contracts it signs with municipalities, with those government entities then supplying the haulers and waste processors to engage in the recycling programs that Recyclebank creates for them. In return, Recyclebank receives a small portion of the

Industry Leaders Magazine

fee paid by municipalities to the actual recycling businesses. So far, those fees have been sufficient to cover the operating expenses of the company. Other revenues are generated by the digital and other marketing platforms that Recyclebank has created, where sponsorships and advertising opportunities are made available to businesses and even governments looking to go green.

Jonathan Hsu Supercharging Recyclebank Efforts Company chief Hsu is the public face of Recyclebank at present, though much of the attention gained by it has come through the Internet and other digital media, which is probably why Hsu was brought on board in the first place. Hsu has publicly stated that Recyclebank’s

32

Aug 2012

mandate is to …“be the first mass market green brand,” and it would seem that the company is well on the way to achieving that goal. “We need to find ongoing solutions to live in balance with the resources that are available on this planet,” Hsu said in a recent interview with Xconomy, a business and economics-oriented webzine. The Recyclebank CEO seems ideally suited to running this enterprise, with his extensive background in digital media as well as other credentials. These include his work as a mergers and acquisitions specialist at J.P. Morgan Securities and his membership on the World Economic Forum Future of the Internet Council. Additionally, Hsu holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Harvard University and an MBA from the Wharton school at the University of Pennsylvania. He’s no dummy, in other words. Recyclebank itself has recently been the recipient of a “World’s 50 Most-Innova-

Industry Leaders Magazine

The

tive Companies” designation and has been lauded for making the term “ecofriendly” something that easily rolls off the lips of even the most recyclingresistant person. Certainly, it has the backing of the superstars in the green world, including former US vice president Al Gore. As if that weren’t enough, several titans in the consumer products world, including Procter & Gamble, General Electric and Johnson & Johnson, have all thrown their support squarely behind Recyclebank’s efforts. By giving people points that they can redeem for goods and services at places like Whole Foods Market, Coca-Cola, Macy’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond and thousands of local businesses across the country and the world, Recyclebank is not only making the world a bit greener with every recycling transaction undertaken by its members but also growing a customer base for many more companies with whom it partners.

Smaller But Greener World for Us All Certainly, the world has grown smaller over the decades, in a figurative sense though, with increasing population, it’s also growing physically smaller in some ways. Companies like Recyclebank are seeking to bring to peoples’ attention the fact that trash and waste simply can’t continue to be dumped into the world’s oceans were buried underground but, rather, needs to be taken back in, reduced to its constituent components, rebuilt into new and useful items and then sent back out into the world, with the process repeating itself over and over again. By pushing for such recycling and green awareness, Hsu and his Recyclebank partners are helping to turn the world into a greener and far better place for all of us.

Often, a company’s chief executive officer becomes the focus of attention on the company for reasons sometimes not strictly related to his or her day-to-day job performance. Instead, shareholders and the media will focus on a chief executive officer’s pay, especially if the pay is deemed by those outside the company as being “too high.” The matter of whether or not a chief executive officer is deserving of the pay she may get is for a different discussion. Here, we want to take a look at the three highest-earning CEOs around the world and what they’re doing in order to be paid as they’re being

38

paid. It’s worth noting that, almost without exception, every chief executive officer and his compensation is a constant topic of discussion among company board members and executive compensation committees formed by those boards.

As Always, There’s Gold in Real Estate The first chief executive officer that immediately springs to mind when it comes to compensation and the level of it being given is actually a person that many out-

side the business world may never even have heard of; David Simon of Simon Property Group, the number one ranked and largest real estate investment trust in the United States. Simon pulls down, according to various sources, more than $1 million in salary with another $100 million or more in stock awards, which are often given to company CEOs as a way to compensate them more fully yet show a cash-based salary that looks to be more reasonable in these economically challenging times. Simon, though, has apparently been getting the job done quite well, given that the property group he helms is in fact tops in the nation and has totally integrated operations across five different real estate platforms, which is no mean feat in the

‘kind of property challenged economic environment seen in the country and around the globe.’

David Simon himself is the son of the Chairman Emeritus of Simon Property Group, Melvin Simon, meaning the Group itself is somewhat of a family run affair in certain ways. Simon, however, isn’t the pure product of nepotism, given that earnings of the company -- including revenue of more than $3.78 billion -- have never been better. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1983 and then went on to snag an MBA from Columbia University’s prestigious Graduate School of Business in 1985. Simon, however, didn’t start working with Simon Property Group right away, instead beginning his career at First Boston and moving through increasingly more responsible positions, ending up as vice president at Wasserstein Parella & Co. before finally moving to Melvin Simon & Associates, the precursor to Simon Property Group, in 1990, as its chief financial officer. By 1993, David Simon led the Group to become a public company, overseeing its wildly successful nearly $1 billion initial public offering (IPO). Since then, Simon has been the impetus behind the strong growth of his

company, and the stock reflects that: It now sells for around $145 per share, up more than 30% year-over-year.

Moonves and CBS a Winning Pair One CEO who definitely has an impact on the daily lives of millions across the country is Leslie Moonves, chief of the number

one rated television network this year, CBS. Moonves is currently president and chief executive officer at the TV network and has been at various iterations of the network’s former parent company, Viacom, since 1995 in a series of positions that culminated in his elevation to CEO at the network several years ago. At present, Moonves is estimated to be earning north of $69.9 million in total compensation, with a total personal net worth of

Industry Leaders Magazine

more than $300 million. Moonves is another example of a CEO apparently getting the job done, because the television network he oversees is the number one rated broadcast network in the nation and has managed to make its network platform extremely profitable in an era where television itself has become increasingly fragmented among cable, streaming and other delivery methods. Leslie Moonves also can be said to have worked in almost every aspect of television, including as a former actor, having been a cast member to one degree or another in various 70s television shows, including Cannon as well as The Six Million Dollar Man, an iconic television series that started in the early 1970s. Born in New York City, Moonves was raised in Valley Stream, New York. A 1971 graduate of Bucknell University, he originally started studies there as a sciences major but switched his major over to Spanish and began acting in several plays on campus and at local summer stock playhouses. Moonves, though, is no dilettante, and

has had extensive experience in management ever since he moved over from acting to management of movie and television network production companies in the late 1970s. During his time at Warner Bros. Television, where he served as president and CEO,

‘Moonves green lighted both Friends and ER, two of the most wildly successful television series of all time.’ Moonves has recently been in the news defending the way in which competitor network NBC has been covering the 2012 London Olympics, a games where a great deal of the content is often shown on a tape-delayed basis in the United States

due to time differences between the US and the UK. “If you don’t want to know the results, don’t go online,” Moonves has observed when asked about the NBC decision to show already completed events as if they were live when it comes to US audiences.

Discovering True Success at Discovery Televsion A third television-related chief executive officer rounds out the top three highestearning CEOs in the world these days. David M. Zaslav, chief executive officer

42

Aug 2012

of Discovery Communications, one of the most well known of the cable TV networks out there, is currently pulling down total compensation exceeding $52.4 million, a nice increase of more than 23% over his last contract. Zaslav himself has held the CEO spot since January of 2007. Previously an executive over at NBC Universal, Zaslav earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton and then grabbed an honors graduate law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1985. Zaslav worked for a time as an associate at a New York City law firm before joining NBC Universal in 1989, helping to found the network’s

Industry Leaders Magazine

cable business channel, CNBC shortly thereafter and then, in 1996, playing a key role in the creation of MSNBC. Zaslav also has been a prime figure in the creation of OWN, the Oprah Winfrey Network, though that particular entity has been struggling of late and pretty much ever since its founding in 2011. David Zaslav is certainly no rookie when it comes to network television, whether over the air or through cable or other new media technologies like streaming video and audio. Currently, Discovery Communications reaches more than 1.7 billion cumulative subscribers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world. Zaslav maintains that he’s totally focused on growth, performance and operational efficiency and those particular numbers certainly don’t lie when it comes to the impact that Discovery Television seems to have on its almost fanatically loyal viewership. Chances are good that few cable television subscribers anywhere in the world haven’t heard of one form of Discovery Television network offering, series,

special or other media event, with Zaslav being one of the prime motivators behind Discovery’s concerted market penetration efforts.

They Really Do Make the Difference So, then: While the top three chief executive officers in the world today might seem, on the face of things, to be “excessively compensated” it’s obvious that -- given the dominant positions of the companies that each is heading -- they’re pretty much delivering value for consideration received, which is just about all that any company board of directors and executive compensation committee can ask for when it comes to the men and women they put in charge of, basically, the life of their various companies. These three CEOs head up a list of distinguished men and women in business today that certainly give hope for the proposition that one man or woman at a company really can make a big difference.

However, AT&T will not be able to take the advantage before three years due to different approvals, which are pending with the FCC. The acquisition will help in creating additional wireless network for various applications, which will be an aid for the increasing wireless data usage on various smartphones and tablets. AT&T will also

effect. Included in the deal are the licenses of wireless communication for AT&T. The next generation network spectrums are also in the radar once it is approved by the authority. Meanwhile the company has also filed an approval application to the commission for transfer of spectrum from companies called Comcast Corp. and Horizon Wi-com LLC. However, no further details are known. If the deal is through, AT&T will become the biggest player in the market for the upcoming years.

The future

FCC rules However, things are not looking positive as of now and experts feel that no particular activity is going to start soon. The company is sure about the completion of the deal by year-end. This is due to various obligations, which are stated by the Federal Communication Commission or FCC regarding issue of new spectrum. The approval of the acquisition is still not done and thus both the companies cannot start operations with immediate

AT&T is confident about the deal and wants to use the additional spectrum for the next generation Long Term Evolution technology. Sources say that almost 212 million users will benefit from this acquisition in the future. The company is also working on improving the infrastructure required for applying this advanced technology. Thus, application of this is kept in mind for a much longer period. Although FCC approvals will take a lot of time, AT&T is not sitting idle. It plans to make more acquisitions to purchase spectrum from the market and use it for various applications. There will be two benefits of this. First is cost, which will be reduced over the next couple of years. Second is the overall service quality which will improve thanks to better technology. Some expert’s say that this spectrum deal is lower valued compared to others. The 2.3GHz spectrum, which AT&T will be able to use for over the three years, is close to WiMAX’s 2.5GHz bands in the USA. There is also another question of blockage of spectrum flow due to the

presence of tall buildings and walls. As the usage of mobile applications are increasing more and more, there is a shortfall in supply and as a result number of small companies are shown the door. Acquisitions have helped in gathering more spectrums required for the same. Apart from acquisitions, spectrum auction is another process through which one can get hold of the same for different markets. However in the recent years, it is seen that bidding prices have gone up unnecessarily.

In the end In the end, the clients will benefit from better usage of the spectrum as the quality as said above will become world class. There will be even more competition among the telecommunication companies in the market. It is clear that more acquisitions will take place once the approvals are sanctioned fast. Sirius

has a vast range of spectrum with which it plans to capture a bigger portion of the market. However, with this latest deal with Nextwave, AT&T will be able to give Sirius a tight competition. AT&T will start with smaller markets where Nextwave has some presence. Gradually it will spread over to the important cities and towns. This helps in cost and profit maximization for the company. The company is trying to add more and more spectrum under its belt so that the users are not affected in case of any failure. In some markets, the older technologies 2G or 3G are still being used. It is difficult to switch from that technology to the later 4G due to costs. In addition, the infrastructure needs numbers of changes to incorporate the same. Thus most of the companies are finding it difficult in managing the resources but it is not so for AT&T. This recent acquisition shows that they are at full swing and wants to remain at the top of the table for good.

Walney Offshore Windfarm

The largest offshore wind farm of the world

- Christine Taylor

Walney – the world’s largest offshore wind farm is situated almost 14km off the Walney Island on the Irish Seas in England. It has a capacity of 367MW making it the largest wind farm in the world. A company called Walney Offshore Wind Farm Limited was the brainchild behind this enormous concept. Such is the capacity that it can provide power to almost 320,000 homes in the entire region. Industry Leaders Magazine

Aug 2012

53

The power behind the Walney Offshore farms is provided by 51 turbines with a load factor of 43%. Prior to the construction of these mammoth projects, lots of planning and permissions were to be obtained. First, the consent of the Electricity Act, 1989 was taken for construction and operation of the same. The offshore cables and infrastructure ware also included here. Secondly the FEPA had to provide a license for continuation of the job under the Food and Environment Protection Act, 1985. This was mainly for the protection of marine ecosystems. The construction did not start prior to the

54

Aug 2012

consent provided by the Coast Protection Act, 1949 for the safety regarding export cables. Consent of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1990 for offshore elements of the works was also useful.

The birth The project was started in 2004 when Dong Energy was handed over the contract of developing the wind farms. A 50 year lease was given by the Crown Estate to the company. Dong meanwhile partnered with SSE to complete the project. This entire process was part of the second UK offshore wind farm tendering process

Industry Leaders Magazine

known as Round 2. Due to the enormous structure of the project; it was wisely divided into two phases with various overlapping activities. This not only saved cost but reduced the overall time of construction and saving millions of lives. The entire project consisted of the turbines and the foundations. But the turbines were incomplete without substations and thus two underpowered cables were installed for each phase. Two short onshore cables were further installed to connect with all the existing onshore electrical substations. This was finally connected with the UK national Grids. The phase 1 was connected to a substation at Heyshame while the phase 2 was connected to a similar construction at Stanah. Utmost safety was maintained while construction and installation of the cables. The plan was to start operation from the end of 2011 and by July of the next year,

phase 1 started operations. This phase was powerful enough to generate 184 MW with 51 turbines. 3 months later the second phase became fully operational. Dong Energy installed the whole system within a record breaking 5 months and 14 days. All the 51 turbines, including the monopoles were operational.

‘Experts found out that the installation was quicker in the second phase because of the common systems being used.’

Industry Leaders Magazine

Aug 2012

55

The resources and materials were all similar. Although some of the turbines are not yet commissioned, the wind farm has officially started operation from February 2012.

Power The first phase otherwise known as Walney 1 has turbines which is almost 137m high and comes fitted with a 107m rotor. The second phase or Walney 2 is even more powerful. This has 150m turbines with 3 18 tone blades. The overall diameter is 120m. Siemens was the manufacturer of these huge machines which provided an output of 3.6 MW. Transporting the 550 tones machines was another headache but the company successfully managed to do the same. The United Kingdom has a diverse atmosphere and thus the turbines were suitably made which were able to function at wind speeds of 9 to 56 mph. The altitude is another key factor while the massive wind speed was also a concern. One of the best things about Walney wind farms is the position which is on a wide coast line. This helps in reducing the visual impact of the entire scheme. To warn everyone who comes near to the project, the cables are all marked with red and blue colors signifying the respective two phases.

Advantages The main benefit from this project is the increase of power which is up from a meager 34 KV to a massive 132KV. This not only minimizes loss but reduces the overall demand for low or inefficient voltage transmission which is sent to the different onshore substations. With 630 MW of power it is currently the largest offshore wind farm but not for long. Dong is scheduled to take up construction of another project with a capacity of 1000MW later.

56

Aug 2012

The other advantages of these units include reduction of carbon emission as well as CO2 emissions. This will help the United Kingdom to achieve a target which will provide better electricity from now on and in the future to 320,000 households which is a lot more than the current population of the place. Barrow-in-Furness is a place where almost 60 engineers are working around the clock to ensure better output and provide quality services to the customers. This has not only increased the job prospectus but development of the whole place is done at a fast pace. With the help of the already existing Barrow Offshore and the Ormonde Offshore, renewable energy will flow to numerous household within a short span of time. The Cumbria coast has almost 30 wind farms making it a better place to operate.

Conclusion The output should be far reaching as a huge amount of cost, material and labor is involved in the project. Lot of people is dependent on the same and thus it should remain free from any distortions. As of now it is the largest in the world, but to keep pace with others, Walney has to update itself depending on the demand. Experts have pointed out that within the next 8 to 10 years, there will be a mammoth increase in the population in while of UK and thus these wind farms have to continuously supply enough power in the required places. With so much of technologies involved it remains an effective means of power generation and thus the officials at Cumbria are seeing a bright future ahead. However time will tell whether Walney will remain at the top or not.

The Internet Association is said to be “the first trade association representing the interests of the Internet economy and America’s leading Internet companies.” Michael Beckerman, who was announced the CEO of the group, has informed that the Internet Association will take actions on behalf of small and large businesses affected by what happens on the Internet. As stated by Michael Beckerman, “The Internet isn’t just Silicon Valley anymore; the Internet has moved to Main Street.” He added:

ing their companies’ membership in the group. Paula Byrne, an Amazon’s spokeswoman, declined to comment. Google and eBay did not comment immediately after some sources broke the news on their membership. As it was stated by Facebook’s spokesman, “We are not prepared to comment on our membership at this time. However, it

is clear that the Internet needs a voice in Washington and the formation of the Internet Association is a welcome development.”

The main task The Internet Association has been presented as “the unified voice of the Internet economy, representing the interests of America’s leading Internet

companies and their global community of users”. These words can mean only one thing, the lobbying organization. Michael Beckerman noted that: “When most people think of Internet companies, they think of Silicon Valley and cyberspace — but part of our message is that the Internet has become main street America.” However he admitted: “Almost every small business uses the Internet and real growth is happening as a result of the Internet. The companies that are going to be members of this association are web-based, but part of our messaging to the Hill and to regulators is that brick-and-mortar businesses in every part of the country rely on the services of the Internet as well.” Lobbying is one of main concerns of the Internet giants these days. Recently they have been lobbying on matters such as easing visa restrictions to employ overseas engineers, privacy, cyber-security and sales taxes. Google as well as Facebook spend a lot of money on lobbying. The lobbying industry is highly developed and accordingly it is valued at $3.3 billion. In turn, Google is said to have spent $5.4m in the first half of 2012, respectively $650,000 was spent by Facebook. For the last couple of years biggest online companies, including Facebook, Google, etc., have been struggling with the individual lobbying in Washington D.C. The decision of launching the trade organization which will fight for their collective interest is a step into defending their common future. It is worth stat-

ing that ISPs, who will not be included in the group, have their own organization, the U.S. Internet Industry Association. And even though Internet users do not agree with decisions made by online companies, Michael Beckerman has stated that the newly launched Internet Association will not turn its back on users’ interests. As reported by the CEO of the group: “We look forward to working with [users],” adding: “In the technology world, there’s always been a close relationship between companies and users because it’s such a competitive industry, so users have real say in the direction in which companies go. Companies and their users don’t always see eye-to-eye on every issue, but we’ll

make a real effort to reach out to real users.” But the main task of the Internet Association is lobbying for “political solutions that will push for a protecting a free and open Internet” as well as defending the Internet from excessive regulation which is seen as a threat to the freedom of the Internet, according to Michael Beckerman’s words. Michael Beckerman, the CEO of the group, said: “Nobody knows what’s next.” He noted: “The Internet is based on creativity and it’s highly competitive. We can’t guess today what innovation will come tomorrow or what next

will have plenty things to do. It is likely that it will have to handle political and regulatory matters, which have been faced by Internet companies and have been a source of inaccuracies for the last few years. Those issues include, inter alia, cyber-security and sales tax collection, copyright protection. The new lobbying group will educate lawyers about those newly emerged issues and at the same time represent companies engaged in the project. Michael Beckerman noted:

“We want to educate (lawmakers) about the impact of the Internet in their congressional districts.” He also added: “In September, we’ll do a full rollout and announce companies and announce policy positions.”

Free internet

startup will launch tomorrow and how they’re going to impact the greater economy. Because we don’t know what next innovation is, we need to be mindful of regulation to ensure it doesn’t stifle creativity.” Michael Beckerman also emphasized the Internet’s importance on the overall economy. These days the term “Internet company” is used in very broad meaning.

The internet giants want to have their own voice to be heard. The decision to create a new lobbying group, which will specialize in internet-tied issues, is fully understandable and rational. Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. are willing to protect their businesses and want law to be more adjusted to their needs. They want to make it easier to employ foreigners or to simplify the taxes, privacy and cyber-security issues. Moreover they acknowledge that law must not be as controversial as the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act was. This legislation act was critiqued by the industry, mainly because it threatened the freedom of Internet. And freedom of the Internet is the most important value. The Internet Association will advocate around the technologies issues in Washington, including issue of the freedom itself.

According to the statement of the Internet Association, its main objective is “advancing public policy solutions to strengthen and protect an open, innovative and free internet”. The goal is to maintain the free Internet. As it was stated by Michael Beckerman, “...the Internet’s decentralized and open model is what has enabled its unprecedented growth and innovation. We must guard against misguided attempts to handcuff this incredible The Internet Association source of job creation, freedom and creativity”.

Always Working to Be a Global Construction Giant Since the worldwide economic meltdown of 2008 it’s been a bit more difficult in many parts of the world to get a building project done. Construction and home building were two industries hit hard when markets collapsed in late 2008 and they’ve since rebounded slowly, if at all, or in fits and starts at best, for the majority of the players in construction. One construction conglomerate that seems to have ridden out economic turmoil better than most is Kajima Corporation, a Japanese company first founded in 1840. Working out of its headquarters in Moto-Akasaka, Minato special ward, Tokyo, Kajima is perhaps best known for its stunning DIB-200 proposal, which is for a mixed-use super tall skyscraper that would exceed more than 2600 feet in height. “DIB200” stands for Dynamic Intelligent Building of 200 Stories.

‘There really are few engineering limitations these days to such massively tall structures, and it’s a mark of Kajima’s innovative and forward thinking efforts that it’s seeking to have such a building constructed.’ It’s not only in the building of structures that Kajima Corporation excels but also in the demolition of them, where it’s been a pioneer of a certain building demolition technique that allows the company to demolish a building, through use of hydraulic jacks, one floor at a time, as opposed to the massive explosives demolition technique used by many other

demolition and construction companies. Kajima has gained wide appreciation in the construction and demolition industries for the safer and more recycling-supportive nature of its demolition technique, in fact. Via use of the technique, recycling efficiencies at sites where the company has used it have gone up markedly. In just two projects -- one a 17 story, the other a 20 story demolition – Kajima was able to return 99% of all steel and concrete in a building for recycling, along with 92% of all interior materials also being sent off to the recyclers.

From Humble Beginnings, a Long Quality History Kajima’s origins go all the way back to 1840, when founder Iwakichi Kajima began a carpentry business in Tokyo, which was then known as Edo, the imperial capital of Japan. Kajima himself pioneered the first Westernstyle building in the city of Yokohama in 1860. The company has always been forward thinking, entering into its first joint venture with a US company way back in 1950, not long after the end of World War II. It also was the builder of Japan’s very first nuclear reactor in 1957. Kajima has been noted as the builder of a number of impressive and well known buildings and other structures, including its completion of the man-made island-based Kansai International Airport in 1994 and the Breeze’ Tower in 2008, a stunningly impressive skyscraper located in Osaka, Japan. That structure stands more than 574 feet and is an architectural beauty. Kajima always seems to be associated with such projects and always seems to bring them in according to plan and cost, most industry observers say. This Japanese construction conglomerate currently enjoys a substantial market capitalization of $3.6 billion and operates across three different business segments: civil engineering, construction, and development. Kajima is a big player in Japanese civil engineering efforts, having its name attached to many bridges and tunnels scattered throughout the country. It aggressively pursues construction

opportunities wherever it can as well, while its development efforts are its most varied activity. Development at Kajima Corporation includes such activities as contract development and consultancy as well as a variety of design-associated orientations that encompass design of structures as well as general engineering efforts. Kajima splits its construction and other business activities into a domestic as well as an overseas series of product and services offerings. As of March, 2012, this vigorous Japanese construction company had more than 136 subsidiaries and 51 associated companies spread all around the world and throughout Japan. Market value-wise, Kajima is currently put at nearly $3.3 billion, with cash on hand of more than $2.1 billion. It’s reflective of the global turmoil in construction markets that profit per year

garnered by companies like Kajima has been fluctuating greatly over the last several years. Average annual profit, though, garnered by Kajima has been a healthy $311 million and its assets total more than $19.4 billion, and have never looked better in that regard. Kajima has had a healthy sales sheet as well, bringing in nearly $16 billion worth in 2011. According to the Forbes Magazine “Global 2000” list, Kajima currently sits at 1115 out of 2000 companies around the world.

Strong Leadership at the Kajima Helm Company chief Mitsuyoshi Nakamura has led Kajima as its President, Executive President and Representative Director since June of 2005. Nakamura first joined the company in April 1965, hewing to the Japanese corporate tradition of moving to top leadership by working one’s way through the management ranks by

Industry Leaders Magazine

starting as a “salary man” and working one’s fingers to the bone, proving one’s ability to manage and lead via successively more responsibility laden positions as time goes on. Nakamura graduated from Tokyo’s prestigious Keio University in 1965. Alumni of the university include three former Japanese prime ministers as well as the crème de la crème of Japanese corporate leadership. At present, 12 Keio graduates serve as chief executive officers of companies residing in the Fortune 500 rolls. Nakamura, then, is gifted with both sterling academic credentials -- with a degree in politics and economics -- as well as nearly 50 years of experience in business gained while moving up the Kajima corporate ranks. At age 69, Nakamura is considered in Japanese corporate culture

to have finally attained the wisdom. Nakamura, in keeping with Japanese corporate outlook on public statements by leaders of companies, keeps a typical low profile but makes sure that he’s at the christening or completion of any Kajima Corporation project & will give his opinion about issues of the day related to the construction industry as well as the general business climate when asked. He remarked, at a recent 2008 construction christening event, on how far Kajima had come since its 1840 founding & through its World War II experiences, noting that the company seemed better positioned than ever for future success. Certainly, the fact that it’s actually grown its business since the downturn in the markets in late 2008 says a lot for Kajima, both as a construction industry giant in Japan and for its likely prospects of success in the years ahead.

A Bright Future for Kajima Japan has always been known as a country that can produce businesses in shipbuilding, steel and construction that can compete on a head-to-head basis against the world’s best. Kajima Corporation is one of those businesses, busily growing itself around the world, including in the United States & Europe, & is defined both by the bottom line and in the quality of the construction it engages in. It’s a past winner of the Deming Award, given annually to companies and businesses that demonstrate a high degree of total quality management (TQM) commitment as well as a focus on employee quality-of-life issues. Kajima is emblematic of the Japanese obsession with TQM, in fact, though Japanese auto companies are probably the most public collective face of such quality improvement processes. However, a quick look at the Kajima bottom line when it comes to the quality of its buildings as well as its strong financial position globally demonstrates that it’s not taking a backseat when it comes to thriving -- not just surviving -- in these challenging global economic times.

ruise Lines Sailing Ahead - Jason Miller

Domestic Small Ship Popularity In the world of water-borne recreation activities, the elite offering such activities are definitely the world’s cruise ship lines. The giants in the industry often make the headlines, sometimes for not-so-great reasons, and taking a cruise is undoubtedly one of the planned-for activities on the minds of many nowadays. Ocean-going cruise lines dominate the industry, though almost all are seeking to create business in and along smaller waters and waterways, including rivers and lakes. American Cruise Lines, a small Guilford, Connecticut cruise ship operator, is one that plies its trade not only on the oceans but also in various rivers in the United States. This cruise line currently operates a very modern fleet of what it calls “small ships” on both US coasts, including up to Alaska, as well as a paddle wheel ship, Queen of the West. Increasingly, small ship cruising is becoming extremely popular, especially in the United States, because of the intimacy of the experience -- most American Cruise Line ships berth only 50 to 150 passengers -- both on the water and during shore excursions. First incorporated in 1991, this cruise ship company is all-modern, including even the paddle wheeler, which was first put into use only in 1995, after extensive renovation by the company. Other ships of the line include the 49-passenger American Eagle, first launched in 2000, and the 100-passenger American Spirit. The cruise line’s youngest ship to date is Independence, which first saw operation in 2010. Many of the ships feature a wider beam, meaning that larger and more luxurious staterooms, public spaces and promenade decks are the order of the day. Even the paddle wheeler, which in the “old days” of the South and the West would have been able to hold hundreds of passengers, now berths only 120, with capacious dining rooms, lounges and decks.

Cruising America’s Most Popular Waterways At present, American Cruise Lines offers 35 different small ship cruise experiences all across the United States. Typical cruise events include steaming up the Hudson River, round trips to New Orleans from various destinations, journeys through Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands, special cruises through the Mid-Atlantic Inland Passage and cruising along the New England Islands. American Cruise Lines promises exemplary service and accommodations and public opinion about the cruise line has been almost uniformly positive. Its Snake River overnight excursions, as well as excursions up the

Industry Leaders Magazine

Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest, are particularly popular, while its Mississippi River excursions, making use of its classic paddlewheel ship, is projected to draw large numbers of passengers starting in August 2012. American Cruise Lines, Inc. is currently helmed by Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Charles Robertson, who runs a very lean corporate office of fewer than 75 employees, not counting permanent employees staffing each of the company’s small ships. Seasonal or event-driven employment with American Cruise Lines also attracts several hundred people, many of whom seek to work on these small ships for a variety of reasons not particularly related to pay opportunities but, rather, for the experience itself, much as many Cruise line passengers also seek out the kinds of cruising opportunities offered by this small American transportation and hospitality company. The company itself divides its operations into several

80

smaller segments, with the two major entities having to do with general operations and maintenance as well as staffing of its ships along with what the company calls “hotel operations,” where a vice president of hotel operations is responsible for the day-to-day operation of this most vital portion of the cruise line company’s business. Sensing even greater opportunity for serious revenue generation along the banks of the Mississippi River, the cruise ship line intends to put its newest paddle wheeler (referring to it as a stern wheeler) into operation on that river in early August 2012. Robertson, in an interview with a travel television network recently, said that the ship, “Queen of the Mississippi,” while being an actual paddle wheel cruise ship, will offer every modern amenity and will “have modern conveniences and technology that will make it environmentally friendly, a little faster and quieter.”

Industry Leaders Magazine

The cruise line intends to maximize profits while also delivering an outstanding product by steaming Queen of the Mississippi up Old Man River and its several well-known tributaries, the Cumberland, the Arkansas and the Ohio Rivers. Owing to the ship’s speed improvements, cruisers will be able to see more of the America that grew up over history along those waterways. In addition, 2012 saw the kick-off of the company’s new seasonal Alaska cruises that will run from June through the end of the summer in late August. A positioning cruise from Seattle to Juno will kick off the product offering and the cruise line will operate out of Alaska’s capital during the summer months, directing one of its 100-passenger American Star class ships to hit the beautiful Alaskan coastline, carrying those same passengers in the lap of luxury while doing so. Industry observers note that the actual “American Star” would make the most logical choice for

the company.

The Unique American Cruise Lines Approach With what industry pros characterize as a “unique approach to U.S. river cruising,” American Cruise Lines – itself a very rare US-based line in an industry dominated by foreign-flagged cruise titans – seems ideally positioned to capitalize as a niche player in the cruise business in a big way. Robertson himself, who took the tiny 1991 version of American Cruise Lines and turned it into the operation it is today only back in 1998, is no stranger to the business and is a highly season professional, with cutting edge knowledge of the kind of niche – small ship cruises both on the coastlines and the rivers of America – operation his company pretty much has all to itself in the United States. ies that empty into the Pacific or the Atlantic if they choose. “Staterooms” really do mean “staterooms” on company ships, with each suite fully equipped with queen-size beds or two twins plus stateroom Internet access, flat-screen TVs and DVD players and all manner of other comforts.

Giving its All, BusinessMaintaining Niche DomiWise nance The American Cruise Line business model places a priority on ports of call, where tie-ins with various tour and other businesses in those ports serve as additional revenue generating opportunities, both for the line and the tied-in businesses. Most of its ships steam in the very early hours of the morning, while passengers sleep in luxurious comfort, making port at all the best docks in each port due to the relative small size of the ships. Cruise passengers awake ready for an all-day of adventure in port, whether on river excursions or along the nation’s coastlines. American Cruise Line ships are able to steam far up tributar-

Aug 2012

The small ship cruise experience is generally a more personal event than what one finds on the 2,000 or 3,000-passenger mega-cruisers and American Cruise Lines, Inc. understands this. With strong and capable executive leadership at all levels and with a niche-oriented outlook – meaning the company isn’t likely to all-of-a-sudden go on a mergers and acquisitions spree, leveraging itself heavily to grow out of the very lucrative niche it dominates – it does indeed look like it faces nothing but smooth sailing and a complete lack of rough shoals in the years ahead.

In the area of sustainable or renewable energy, solar and wind stand apart as two energy producing factors showing the most long-term promise for great things in the future. Wind power, if properly harnessed and at currently high efficiencies of energy generation and storage, shows a great deal of potential for future reductions in petroleum or other natural resource-related energy activities. Given that, it’s no surprise that many companies have been entering into the wind power markets in a big way over the last decade or so. One wind power company of note that’s been hanging in there is Nordex SE, a Ger-

For those not deeply familiar with wind power, it’s embodied by those giant turbines that one can see across the countryside in many parts of the world (and even in seas and oceans) busily turning and cranking out definable and sometimes-impressive amounts of electricity. Based out of Hamburg, Germany, Nordex currently has operations at several sites around the world, including the German Baltic seacoast city of Rostock, China, and in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

sold in Asian-Pacific markets while the 2.5 MW class of turbine is sent to Europe and North America for use. Nordex manufactures its wind turbines for two different environmental conditions; strong winds and medium-tolow winds. The company can produce wind turbines standing at impressive heights as well, with some sitting at 60 m above the ground while others can reach heights of 140 m above the ground (those are designed for lowwind conditions). Nordex isn’t resting on its laurels, though, announcing last year the upcoming production of a wind turbine that can produce meaningful amounts of energy even at very low wind velocities. It’s projected that these turbines will reach heights of 150 m, at minimum.

Serving Wind Turbines is a Priority

A Long History for Nordex SE In terms of wind power companies, Nordex SE is fairly venerable, having been founded in 1985 in the Danish city of Give. Owing to steady growth since that year, Nordex SE became the first wind company to produce a 1 MW turbine for commercial production. Nowadays, this innovative German wind turbine manufacturer turns out a couple of different platforms; one a 1.5 MW and the other a 2.5 MW wind turbine. Nordex divides up its wind turbine distribution into two different markets, with the 1.5 MW turbine

Nordex SE not only manufactures its wind turbines but also engages in a very vigorous wind turbine servicing business, maintaining and looking after wind turbines wherever they are, no matter what company made them. Its company motto is “We’ve Got the Power,” and Nordex, through its wind turbine business, is obviously alluding to its capacity to produce a large amount of wind-driven energy via its products and services. In general, wind power has been able to handle the downturn in sustainable “green energy” markets better than solar power lately, with several notable solar companies having gone bankrupt in the last two years. Not so with many wind power businesses, with Nordex actually making a profit from its operations for the most part. 2010 revenue came in at a strong €972 million, with a profit of €20.9 million booked that same year. The company enjoys a relatively

strong assets structure as well, featuring €987 million to back its continued operations and growth. More than 2500 employees have been drawing a steady paycheck from this German wind power company, too.

Strong Tailwinds in the Future Future projects for Nordex include a very impressive 4 MW wind turbine due to enter mass production in the 2013/2014 timeframe. In general, the company offers wind turbines of various energy producing potential right up through 6 MW and it certainly shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to engineering wind turbines of greater and greater energy producing capabilities. As far as its services, when it comes to wind power companies Nordex SE is a full-menu-offering wind power firm, including in project development, infrastructure creation and grid connection and maintenance. With Nordex, the installation of a wind turbine is only the beginning, and the company is able to offer a broad spectrum of turnkey wind turbine operations for customers looking to make the switch to energy generation via wind rather than through coal or oil. To say that Nordex is a “green” company is somewhat of an understatement, to tell the truth. Key leaders at Nordex SE include Dr. Jurgen Zeschky, its CEO. Born in 1960, Zeschky received a PhD in mechanical engineering and then served in a variety of positions at Mannesman Demag, both in Europe and in the USA. After a nine-year stop at German company Voith Turbo,

88

Aug 2012

Zeschky was tapped in 2012 to serve as Nordex SE chief. Company leadership at Nordex is solidly technocratic with a strong simultaneous background in finance, marketing, distribution and other vital aspects of business management today. With more than 27 years of experience in harnessing wind energy, Nordex SE seems ideally positioned to maintain its strong market position, whether or not the European Union continues with

its subsidy regime, which seems ever more in doubt as various European nations and the European Union itself look to austerity measures in these difficult economic times. Nordex, though, has the skill and expertise to site its wind turbines in prime locations offering the highest amount of wind energy potential and seems to be forward thinking to a high degree when it comes to anticipating wind energy production market

trends and then acting on them.

Nordex SE Looking to Cement its Lead Nordex SE leadership also seems focused on its corporate social responsibilities, endowing a chair in wind power engineering at the University of Rostock in February, 2011. Former CEO Thomas Richterich – who’s since moved to the

company’s management board -- observed at the time, “As one of the pioneers in the wind power industry, Nordex is very keen to additionally extend its technological lead,” a clear sign that the company is looking to scoop up as many wind power engineering graduates as it can in order to continue to press its substantial advantages in the marketplace. It’s worth noting that wind power enjoys a great deal of support

in Germany in several of its most notable states. Nordex has been the recipient of a great deal of acclaim and support from the citizenry in those several states and its bottom line demonstrates such support. It’s only been lately that this German wind power company has been making a concerted push to penetrate American wind power markets but if past performance is any predictor of future potential, Nordex could be a safe bet for success on American shores. Given the mature state of the wind power industry and the general lack of technological barriers, such as one might see when discussing solar panel energy conversion efficiencies, it’s no surprise that wind power turbines and associated products and services continue to be looked at more favorably than their solar power cousins, even in these troubled economic times. Nordex SE, which combines a venerable wind power industry presence with a continually forward thinking obsession with improvement of wind power energy creation, looks to be the company out there ready to create even more favorable winds for wind power energy production in the years to come.

Cargolux Air Freight Soaring Ever Higher

Going for the Green in Air Cargo The world of commercial aviation is often divided into two spheres; passenger and air freight or cargo. In truth, most commercial airlines, when not completely in the air freight business, like to dedicate significant resources to carrying cargo, which is actually a very lucrative line of work and sometimes more lucrative than hauling passengers from city to city or country to country. A typical Boeing 747-400 passenger jumbo jet can actually carry far more in the way of cargo than it can in terms of passenger weights, and often at better profit margins. Cargo airlines, then, would seem to have the best advantage of all, given that they’re strictly dedicated to carrying air freight. One such airline -- though it dabbles in charter flights as well as aircraft third-party maintenance businesses -- is Luxembourg-based Cargolux Airlines International S.A. (operating as Cargolux),

which has been plying the skies over Europe and elsewhere since 1970. Cargo and air freight, when it comes to making money, is an industry unto itself, and the crews and airlines that specialize in getting air freight from one place to another operate at levels of efficiency that can be quite impressive, and this includes Cargolux. Founded in March 1970 as the result of a partnership between several airlines and shipping companies, including the flag carrier airline of Luxembourg, Luxair, Cargolux almost immediately enjoyed success not long after it first began to fly cargo around on its sin-

gle prop-driven Canadair CL-44. Within three years of startup, in fact, Cargolux was able to take delivery of its first alljet airliner, the now-venerable Douglas DC8, which was able to carry more cargo at greater speeds, thereby shortening promised delivery times, than most any other jet aircraft in the world at the time. In 1979, in looking at the world of cargo air freight operations, Cargolux smartly began to take on jumbo jet air freighters, taking delivery of its first such aircraft in the form of a Boeing

747-200F air freighter. Since that time, this hard-working cargo airline -- it’s one of the largest scheduled all-cargo airlines in Europe -- has only continued to grow, with it seeing the delivery of its first Boeing 747-400F air freighter in 1993. At present, Cargolux S.A. has a total of 17 jumbo jet all-Boeing 747-type air freighters; 3 Boeing 747-400BCFs (combination passenger/cargo jet airliners), 10 Boeing 747-400F pure cargo carrying jet airliners and orders booked for 9 new Boeing 747-8F super-large capacity air freighters.

New Freighters, Great Outlook

Same

Given the pace of growth for the airline, and the fact that it feels healthy enough to be the launch customer for Boeing’s newest air cargo carrying jet airliner, the B747-8F, it should come as no surprise that Cargolux seems to be flying very high and in non-turbulent air these days. Currently, this air freight operator carries cargo to 90 destinations in conjunction with a strong global network that it’s been growing since its founding more than 40 years ago. Cargolux also

benefits from the fact that Qatar Airlines, one of the most profitable and successful airlines in the world, purchased a 35% share stake back in September of 2011, making the Arab airline the second-largest shareholder behind Luxair itself, which boasts a more-than-43% share in the cargo carrier. In addition, the average age of the Cargolux fleet of 747s is only a relatively young 10.1 years, and will average down in age as brand-new 747-8F super cargo carriers are added to the fleet over the coming years. Cargolux S.A. has several principal sub-

sidiaries operating around the world, as well, including a profitable aircraft leasing business and Caribbean operations through another subsidiary. The airline was up until very recently piloted by Frank Reimen, its Chief Executive Officer, President, and Director, who’s had his hand on the yoke since November of 2011. Reiman has a great deal of experience in the air cargo industry, mostly with Cargolux. Reimen himself is scheduled to leave the company soon in order to take a position offered to him by the Luxembourg government.

Once Reimen leaves, Chief Financial Officer Richard Forson is projected to assume the top leadership position at Cargolux. Forson, a South African businessman, had previously worked as CFO at Qatar Airways from 2003 to 2005, making him an ideal choice to continue the close partnership existing between Cargolux and the Arab airline. During his tenure, Reimen continued to add to the successful bottom line of this air freight carrier, including the addition of more than 85 offices in over 50 countries around the world.

Growing a Global Air/ Trucking Network Demonstrating that air freight and

trucking are natural members of the same family, for all intents and purposes, Reimen and Forson helped to grow an extensive global trucking network with more than 250 destinations around the world. In this way, cargo can be taken into a Cargolux air freight airliner, flown to any number of destinations, and then unloaded and placed onto the airline’s trucking network, keeping all the busi-

ness in the house and at very lucrative air freight and cartage rates. The company takes a backseat to no one when it comes to air freight, having recently been voted the best all-cargo air carrier in Italy for 2012. It makes use of innovative technologies to receipt and then transport all types of cargo in a rapid and cost-effective manner for its customers. Though it’s not 100% certain,

Industry Leaders Magazine

knows the skies and the highways and byways of the air freight business extensively, in other words.

Clear Skies Ahead Cargolux apparently intends to keep pressing for ever-increasing levels of dominance in the European air cargo industry, if this latest management change is any indication. And with strong financial backing from both Luxair and Qatar Airlines, there seems little in the way of impediment to the air cargo carrier succeeding at even greater rates in the months and years ahead. Add to that the fact that its likely new, and permanent, CEO (Forson) has such a strong background in air cargo in addition to being a Senior Chartered Accountant with a Higher Diploma in tax law, and the skies indeed seem to be bright blue and cloud-free for this Luxembourgbased air freight carrier. The airline itself demonstrated profitability in 2010, though it had mixed results in 2011, with high hopes for 2012 and beyond. The new Boeing air freighters are projected to lead to high levels of profitability as Cargolux pushes into markets designed to help it ride out future economic downturns in various regions as well as worldwide.

most industry observers believe that the South African Forson has the inside track on the CEO slot due to his past relationship with Qatar Airlines. Forson has more than 20 years of experience in the financial, general business and operational management fields, with more than 13 years of that having come from his service at South African Airways, where he worked in various senior management positions, including as CFO. Forson

Added all together, Cargolux, S.A. seems to have what it takes -- including, for Europe, relatively strife-free labor relations (Europe in general enjoys much higher rates of union labor participation than is found in places like the United States or throughout much of Asia) -- to succeed over the long run. With Forson most likely adding his considerable executive skills to the cargo carrier, industry experts expect a second-half 2012 fiscal performance that could see the carrier land in the black yet again. Certainly, 2013 and beyond seem to be extremely promising for Cargolux.
