The idyllic picture of the surrounding environment is sinking into oblivion. But there are still some knights in shining armor as more and more companies, cities and countries are getting engaged in green initiatives aimed at preserving the environment. The cover story is dedicated to big green initiatives as the environment is our common good. The fact is that if we want to develop in the future, these days we have to take care of the environment. The Earth is our mother, thus we should launch green initiatives to make sure that also the future generations can use resources not only to survive, but also to develop. The April’s “WOW! Quotient” is also devoted to environmental issues as it covers the topic of fuels of the future. Indeed, a number of companies and institutes are much involved in research on fuels of the future. The research, however, is not some kind of a nare’s nest, but it is an actual need and necessity. For those, who are big fans of art, we have the “Larger than Life” feature where you will find the article dedicated to the most expensive paintings ever sold. So be ready because maybe you will feel an ultimate urge to buy one more painting. All this and more… Regards,

China to replace US as the World’s Biggest Economy in 2016 According to the new study by the OECD, China will witness economic growth of 8.5 percent in 2013. To secure its economic growth, Chinese authorities should be more focused on crucial reforms in several areas. If China secures the rate of economic growth, it will replace the United States as the world’s largest economy in 2016.
Light in the near future
On the 22nd of March, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development released its study on economic growth of China. As it was stressed in the OECD report: “Recent OECD simulations suggest that China could maintain
high, though gradually easing, growth during the current decade.” According to the OECD estimates, China will see its economy expand around 8.5 percent in 2013 and almost 9 percent in 2014. The report, which was issued in Beijing, indicated that the world’s second economy should not be in constraints of uncertainty. The fact is that the OECD report delivered one of the most positive outlooks for China’s economy in the near future as its estimates differed significantly from other forecasts.

Nobody is born with any specific skill or special skills. Everybody is born with a fright of falling and of loud noises, but after that everything is learned by the individual’s own efforts. Same is the case to become a leader. Leaders are certainly made not really born! Leadership qualities are acquired over a period of time depending upon several factors. Our perception of leadership affects how we look upon the leaders around us. For example, if we expect our leader to be a hero figure, we are
20

going to see a person who takes charge to save the day being a good leader as well as someone who asks people’s thoughts and lets the group make decisions weakly. Instead, if we think a leader should be mutually agreeable and focused on making sure decisions arise from the group, we would view someone who is directive as aggressive or a oppressor. In the same way, our perceptions about how people become leaders affect how we estimate people’s leadership potential. Believing people are born leaders is likely to result in a focus more on choice

(identify the right people) rather than on growth (develop the people you get). On the other hand, perceiving that people are made into leaders by their experiences would be more likely to result in a greater focus on making sure people had the right opportunities to develop into leaders.
Leadership Skills Leaders come in all different shapes and sizes. It is interesting to study effective leaders. At face value they are all different. They all have developed their own
style based on their own personality and what works for them. A true leader accepts responsibility. Everything from how they speak to how they act is part of being responsible. It is easy to follow them because you know where they are going and know they will lead you as well. Leaders work at being leaders. They are always improving their skills and learning from the situations they are in. They study people and have learned how to effectively interact with them to get what they want.

Leadership starts at the top, but is best achieved when developing a team atmosphere. Leaders know they can do better when people are working together for one common goal. ingly. Coaching a football team is an example of this. Sometimes the players need a kick in the rear and other times they need a pat on the back. Leaders are respected for what they have accomplished in the past. A real leader can speak from a position of practical experience and know they will be listened to because they speak from that vantage point. A respected leader is able to command more from his people than a leader who is not.

L e ade r s hip Pip e line impr ove me nt Regardless of whether you have a born or made perspective on leadership, you can continue to improve your organization’s leadership benches strength by providing people with access to varied experiences regarding development. When you make sure that people have adequate access to developmental experiences, coaching, mentoring, training, and other leadership experiences, they have the opportunity to learn and become better leaders. Whether these experiences draw out and boost natural ability or create new leadership skills may be debated – but either way the organization benefits. Organizations can also benefit in other ways when they provide more general support for development. Access to development has been shown to increase employees’ job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and performance.
Leadership Development research by CCL
Leaders seek opinions and compile ideas before forming a game plan. Good leaders know that they cannot come up with every idea that will work. By allowing input they are able to make a more responsible decision. Leaders have skills and they use them to accomplish something every day. Anyone can aspire to become a good leader if there is a willingness to work and to learn how to be a leader.
If Mades and Borns have different beliefs about what is most important in creating a leader, does that affect their beliefs about development? Are Borns less supportive of training than Mades because Borns don’t think that training is particularly important? While Borns and Mades both believe that pay and relationships with others should be important to leaders, Mades more than Borns think that making the world a better place, being of service to society, and contributing to humanity (selflessness) should be important to leaders. As a result of a research conducted by Center of Creative Leadership in North Carolina, the following was inferred: Borns and Mades are ambivalent about whether they think leaders should behave autonomously (e.g., be independ-

On the other hand, if you are working in an organization where C-level executives believe that leaders are more made than they are born, those executives may believe that a more collaborative approach is most successful. Being governing and focused on rules and formal leadership may be less efficient with them. We now stand at this point when we just have to either find or develop the fuel of the future. The fact is that increasing concerns over climate change push us to look for alternative fuels or just fuels of the future. The need is even bigger when we take into account the fact that all reserves of known fossil fuels are slowly running out‌ With more advanced technology, we still use staggering amounts of fuels and it seems that nothing will change it in the near future. As today’s fuel sources will not be enough for humankind to further develop or even survive, scientists have been looking for alternatives. Indeed, nuclear power appears to be one

of them, but after the recent alarms and accidents, including the Fukushima disaster in 2011, the source has fewer and fewer advocates. Therefore we need an alternative for fossil fuels, including coal, oil and natural gas, as today’s alternative energy sources like wind, solar or water power might not be simply enough to secure our future! Therefore there is an increasing necessity of developing the fuel of the future which will have the best qualities and at the same time it will not endanger the environment. Scientists are more certain that they will be able to replace traditional fossil fuels as human consumption of it carries in-

creased danger of emergence of following issues: • Damage to natural environment due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) which in turn causes global climate change with its all consequences. •
Danger to fauna nad flora.
Probably you are thinking that all these negative aspects of consumption of fossil fuels might be significantly reduced by the increased usage of hybrid and electronic vehicles. That is simply a big exaggeration. According to a survey by the US Energy Information Administration, the American driver will still be dependent on liquid fuels for the next 20 years. But electronic power is not
enough to replace fossil fuels, thus scientist are intensely working on fuel of the future. Below you will find ideas on fuels of the future which are being developed by top scientists.
The wastewater – as fuel of the future Can you imagine that the wastewater might be a source of the fuel of the future? Hard to believe, hmm? Yet it seems that it might be possible. Surprisingly, electricity can be produced from wastewater, at least according to scientists from Oregon State University. In an article published in the journal Energy and Environmental Science, they trotted

scale. To cut a long story short and not go deep in the chemical details, the Oregon State team’s technology has been working on a way to find the best way to generate electricity from wastewater. Their method of generating electricity cleans the water more effectively than anaerobic digestion, not to mention that
it does not produce any undesired byproducts as well. The only thing left is to use the technology on large scale. The large-scale project is expected to prove that this way of generating electricity will not only be cheap compared to other methods, but it will also reduce costs of processing

sewage. They are strongly convinced that wastewater might be the fuel of the future.
Algae as fuel of the future Another absurd? Not at all. The study on qualities of algae and the possibility of using them as fuels was launched back in the 1950s. Interestingly, the studies from the period noted a possibility of extracting a lipid produced by algae, then processing it into fuel. It is worth mentioning that the algae lipid has many similar qualities to what is extracted from fossil fuels (sic!). It has been underlined in many studies that algae fuels are much more beneficial than other renewable sources, including corn. Furthermore, technology producing algae fuels will be carbon neutral which these days is so significant taking into account climate change. In addition, it is said that algae fuels also might be mixed freely with fossil fuels which is a big convenience when it comes to, for example, transportation.
To top it all, algae could produce approximately ten times more fuel per acre than corn, not to mention that unlike corn, it could be cultivated in foul conditions, including desert. However, all studies on technology and use of algae fuels are at a very beginning. As it has been underlined by researchers, microbial level of algae is still a big mystery. Despite the very early stage of development, many energy giants are much interested in research, just to mention ExxonMobil which went into partnership with Synthetic Genomics. The $600 million joint venture is aimed at studying algae fuel extraction as well as growth methods. Also Cascades Investment LLC and Venrock are much involved in algae fuels research as they have plowed in Sapphire Energy.

there is one condition - it must be safe. One of people believing in the future of nuclear power is Richard Martin. He is a big advocate of safe, green and more efficient nuclear power which cannot be used as weapons. Richard Martin in his book Superfuel reasons that thorium is the fuel of the future as it can secure green and safe energy outlook. As a strong advocate of nuclear power, he once said: “There are obvious problems with uranium-based nuclear power. (...)I became familiar with thorium about four years ago, and it was one of those things that seemed too good to be true. The more I investigated it, the more I realized that thorium does offer some real possibilities...It’s not a panacea, but it could be a critical part of our energy future.” Thorium is expected to be a source of the fuel of the future as it
is far less radioactive than uranium. Not only that Thorium is safer, but it is also plentiful. Using thorium is not a dream, however the impact of military industrial sector has to be significantly reduced to make a dream come true. What is interesting is the fact that China has already launched its first investments in developing thorium reactors. Richard Martin underlines that a revolution in using thorium as the fuel of the future will be led by countries such as China and India as they need new sources of energy. The need of clean and efficient energy pushes developing countries to be more involved in research on new sources of fuel, including thorium.

IBM and its BIG Green initiative A not-so-long time ago, IT industry was overwhelmed by the idea of implementing any green initiative in the sector. However, the approach has changed significantly as companies such as Microsoft Corp., SAP AG, Google Inc. and others have been trying to define their own strategies for environmental sustainability and the so-called Green IT. Just few years ago in 2007, IBM Corp. decided to launch its Big Green initiative. As it was underlined by the company, it would spend around $1 billion
per year on this eco-friendly initiative. According to plans of IBM Corp., there were two main goals: • to reduce by staggering 40 percent energy consumption in the company’s data centers • to ensure that the company’s energy bills stayed at the more o r less same level As any plan, also IBM Corp.’s Big Green initiative was changed after its introduction. The ideas of the Big Green initiative were indeed laudable as they covered removal from the market 32 pesticides suspected of causing cancer or birth defects, reductions of emissions that contribute to the burning problem of global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer, etc. While the ideas of the Big Green initiatives were indeed laudable, the proposition , which was backed by Assemblyman Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) and Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp, faced
severe criticism from the agriculture and timber industries. It was underlined that American farmers were dependent on pesticides and without them crop production could slump by as much as 30 percent, according to estimates. Although the Big Green initiative failed in California, it raised

question about the environment issues and put them on display. While commenting on the initiative, Nancy Unger, assistant professor of history, environmental studies, and women’s and gender studies, underlined: “Environmentalists learned from Big Green. much appreciated for all of its implemented green initiatives. The US-based carmaker has started to pay more attention to sustainability and eco-friendly policies since the early 1990s. Ford Motor Co. has been introducing many green initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of its operations on the environment. To make a change, the company even established some targets regarding the the usage of energy, water and Green House Gas emissions as well.
What’s more, Ford Motor Co. is very much engaged in development of environmentally-friendly vehicle technologies. The company puts focus on manufacturing, materials and facilities management as it aims to achieve sustainability. Even Motor much cause ment

green technologies aimed at improving fuel economy and reducing CO 2 emissions, the company still has to face severe criticism. Environments note that Ford Motor Co. has not introduced all necessary measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its operations. But ecologists also accuse the US-based marker of backing from its ecological pledges and ideas. Ford Motor Co, however, does not agree with the aforementioned allegations.
Green turns greener Companies are more and more aware that being green is essential. Some introduce green initiatives in aid of making the environment cleaner, some do that just to look “green” in the eyes of their clients who are getting more ecocautious. It seems that even some companies are competing with each other when it comes to green products. Even though green initiatives should come from the eco-awareness and the honest concerns over the future, some
46

of them are simply aimed at winning new clients – but does it mean that they will not contribute to a small change? The thing is that “being green” cannot be only a marketing trick without any really initiatives being introduced as clients and ecologists will get to know about it. And deceiving customers and environmentalists is not a good idea. Environmental issues are main concerns of the present times, but if companies are aware of that and their impact on the environment, they can make a difference. The first thing on a road of making a difference is the way of thinking. One thing is, without a doubt, important that green initiatives can be beneficial not only for the environment, but for the companies as well. However, we should keep in mind words of Ian Somerhalder who stated that: “Lack of time and money create really bad green practices.”

However, Brice Gosnell, Vice President Publishing & Global Digital Publisher, once underlined: “A lot of our Android and Nokia product are historical products. They’re from deals that were done a few years back.

Whether or not we are going to maintain those products in the future… it’s very hard to support that.” The fact is that travelers still prefer using websites to using apps while traveling. Therefore the company needs to be more open for a change and creative while making use of new trends. In spite of all of these challenges, Lonely Planet, the legendary travel guide book publisher, remained a tidbit for investors and BBC Worldwide made use of that.
Sale of Lonely Planet On the 19th of March, BBC Worldwide announced that it finally got rid of Lonely Planet, the leading publisher of travel guide books, to US-based NC2 Media. The sale of Lonely Planet was prepared after the analysis of the 2012 review indicating a deep need of a change in the BBC strategy. According to a statement, the BBC Trust has already approved the contract and its terms. The sale of Lonely Planet was more or less expected as after the purchase of this popular publisher of travel guides in 2007, BBC Worldwide had been widely and harshly criticized by the Select Committee on Culture Media and Sport. IndBBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of famous BBC faced many attacks after the purchase of Lonely Planet, the world’s most successful publisher, as the acquisition was said to have been not in line with the basic interests of BBC. According to the findings of the review, the company should be more engaged in development of its BBC brands. As it was announced, BBC Worldwide would get in total around £51.5 million for Lonely Planet. The sum is substantially down on staggering £130.2 million the company paid in total for the purchase of Lonely Planet in two parts in 2007 and 2011.

More on the new owner As for Nashville-based NC2 Media, which is the buyer of Lonely Planet, the company is ready to run the world-famous publisher of travel guides. NC2 Media CEO Daniel Houghton will be nominated as the chief executive officer of the acquired travel guide business.
Daniel Houghton underlined: “With this acquisition comes a global footprint, not only in the travel guide business, but also in magazine publishing and the digital space.” We are very excited about this opportunity, and delighted to agree this deal with BBC Worldwide,” adding that the NC2 Media was convinced that Lonely Planet reflected the countless development opportunities especially in the digital era. It might be surprising that a company like NC2 decided to acquire Lonely Plan-

et. On the other hand, when we take into consideration that Kentucky billionaire Brad Kelly is the majority shareholder of NC2, nothing can be less startling. It seems that billionaire Brad Kelly has this magic ability to turn everything he touches into gold. Some may ask: “What does the big land owner want to do with legendary Lonely Planet? The heck he has no idea about it!” But the fact is that he has also invested in OutwildTV, a site promoting video documentaries by travel writers, thus the acquisition of Lonely Planet is not otherworldly at all. Interestingly, NC2 Media is known for its focus on digital content, but it is still uncertain how this will im-

pact recently-acquired Lonely Planet. Yet it has already been suggested by Daniel Houghton that Lonely Planet will be introduced to everything what the 21st century technology offers - whatever it means. Indeed, travel guides were once believed to be resilient to the digital era! However everything changes. The travel guides have been also much affected by the new technology as according to the findings of the survey by Nielsen Bookscan, US retailers sold only 7.97 million books in the adult nonfic-

Even though NC2 Media is much focused on digital content, the company declared that it would continue with Lonely Planet’s book publishing. Concurrently, the new owner of Lonely Planet underlined in a letter sent to employees that it would ““accelerate the brand’s digital strategy.” It should be highlighted, however, that

Media mogul, James Murdoch underlined that the BBC’s acquisition of Lonely Planet was illustrated as a “particularly egregious example of the expansion of the state.”
Omnipresent Criticism In the past, BBC Worldwide was harshly criticized for the purchase of Lonely Planet. From the very beginning, the acquisition was lambasted by rival media organizations in the private sector as they claimed that a public television company should have not taken any steps in expansion in areas such as book publishing. The fact is that BBC did not pay much attention to the voices of critique as it wanted to conquer new areas with Lonely Planet, including digital outlets. However, it turned out that even legends also struggled with travel sites such as
Surprisingly or not, BBC Worldwide has already faced a wall of criticism after the announcement of the sale of the famous travel guide business. And that is not the end of it as the wave of animadversion has just begun. Certainly, the price of the sale of Lonely Planet is the main reason of omnipresent criticism as BBC Worldwide will record a £80 million loss on its investment. Everything indicates that similar purchases will not be allowed in the future.

Canada glories in many titles. Similar to Canada, Toronto is frequently and constantly ranked at the top of rankings.
In some rankings the country was ranked as one of the best places to do business. But also cities of Canada are not in much worse position as they are also acknowledged by different institutions and associations. There is no doubt that Toronto, which is the provincial capital of Ontario and happens to be the biggest city in Canada, is the better business destination and simply a place to do business. But the fact is that the strong position of the city is actively backed by improve-

Indeed, reforms of tax system, a lack of omnipresent bureaucracy, strong banking system and investor protection made Canada and its cities attractive to businesses. The fact is that its competitiveness, innovation and livability are much valued and appreciated. It is commonly underlined that Toronto as the better business destination offers incredible strength and talent, not to mention that the city

simply lures businesses with its probusiness environment. What’s more, Toronto is, without a doubt, the Canada’s business and financial capital. The increasing significance of Toronto as the better business destination is also confirmed by its positions in many rankings, including 3rd position in the 2012 PwC Cities of Opportunities Study, 7th position of 53 global financial centers in the 2012 Banker magazine, and 10th position of 77 cities in the Global Financial Centers Index (GFCI).
Toronto – The City of Possibilities Toronto, the better business destination, is attractive to companies as its low crime rate, affordable housing and
office costs, a high quality of living are just irresistible. The annual “Cities of Opportunities report conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers placed Toronto just behind famous New York and above legends such as London or Paris. Indeed, Toronto can glory in high levels of achievements in categories such as health, safety, security, low crime rate, intellectual capital and innovation. But Toronto as the City of Possibilities does not end at all aforementioned strengths as it also trots out when it comes to sustainability, cost and ease of doing business. Therefore it is not an exaggeration to say that Toronto is the better business destination and a place to do business, but it also has some weaknesses like imperfect transportation and infrastructure, which are however under continuous construction,

mense stability in many categories.
The position of Toronto as the better business destination and a place to do business has been confirmed by numerous rankings. For example, according to Fast Company, Toronto is ranked as seventh among 10 North American cities which stand out in categories such as economy, environment, governance, living, mobility and people.
But that is not it as Toronto was also acknowledged by other rankings and surveys, including KPMG’s 2012 Comparative Alternative study and 2012 Global Financial Centers Index.
As it was underlined in a justification all of top ten cities “push the envelope of technology, sustainability, and better living conditions”. Also Toronto has been appreciated by PriceWaterhouseCoopers and the Partnership for New York City in their survey - Cities of Opportunities. one of the tech hubs. A survey by Startup Genome ranked Toronto as the 4th top tech hub.
Strengths of Toronto The fact is that Toronto can glory in almost countless strengths. The first and the most important thing is that Canada and Toronto have not been so much affected by the financial crisis compared to the US and its cities, not to mention the European Union. Indeed, the highly regulated banking system stabilized the situation in Canada, thereby strengthening the position of Toronto as the better business destination and a place to do business. Indeed, Toronto has numerous strong points. Eva Pyatt, director of business services for Toronto’s economic development and culture division, underlined: “The strength of Toronto is that we have such a diversified economy.” Without a doubt, the good economic conditions of Toronto are much encouraging for big corporations and entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are much backed by all initiatives introduced by the city, including resource conservation and efficiency programmes. Toronto also endorses early stage businesses from the provinces through funding, not to mention that the city also offers funding for fast growing entrepreneurs through the institution of Ontario Centre of Excellence. Therefore it is not surprising that entrepreneurs very much appreciate the support of the city. Moreover, Toronto, the better business destination and a place to do business, lures businesses with its highly qualified workers. The city can glory in a very high percentage of highly educated people as 64 percent of Toronto’s inhabitants have a post-secondary degree. The city also takes pride in the fact that is the headquarters for Canada’s banking industry. Even though there are

fewer banks than in the United States, which is considered to be the Canada’s sibiling, the banking sector is indeed one of the biggest strength of it as financial institutions are highly regulated and offer services which also US companies are familiar with. And despite the fact that it is hard to get a support of venture capitalists, considerate strategic investing makes the Toronto and Canada’s economy more resilient. In addition, Toronto is a very much proecological city as office buildings under construction are LEED-certified which

implies that they have the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building designation. Certainly, despite the fact that the Toronto’s infrastructure and transportation are considered to be still imperfect compared to other cities, they remain relatively strong points of the Ontario’s capital, and make it the better business destination and a place to do business. The city has good system of subways, highways and the Toronto Pearson International Airport which is the biggest in Canada. Also the closeness to the

survey conducted by a California-based research organization, Toronto was ranked as fourth best place for startups just behind Silicon Valley, New York and London.
In parallel, Toronto was ranked as the second in the ranking of The 10 most innovative cities in the world survey by the Australia-based consultancy. Indeed, openness and a startup-friendly environment make Toronto a paradise for tech companies as there are even fewer barriers for a business then in Silicon Valley and the city has a few VCs. Toronto offers the entrepreneurial spirit which lures people to set up their companies there.
Toronto welcomes business
United States makes Toronto so attractive to businesses which specialize in exporting and manufacturing as well. here is always demand for art whether the economy is losing its stem or not.
James Whistles once noted: “An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.”
The fact is that the world’s richest people just love getting their hands on the most sought-after pieces of art, including paintings. And if you think that it is a new trend, you are seriously mistaken. Back in ancient times, wealthy and noble did spend their money on art. Not surprisingly, that has not changed throughout centuries. In a couple of last years, world’s biggest billionaires spent staggering sums, which can make a commoner dizzy, on paintings. Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, Steven Cohen or Carlos Slim are among those super-rich who just love spending their money. In fact, the art business is in very good shape because of their desire to spend exorbitant sums on pieces of art. The best paintings and other forms of art are not something which can be bought by a common person. When we are talking about the top paintings, top art in general, the prices may really achieve vertiginous levels.
are able to simply buy them. Indeed, some of the world’s richest are art collectors and some just want to spend their money on the pieces of art as they believe it is good investment. Nonetheless, the question remains: “Why can some painting achieve these unimaginable sale prices, while others are not so much valued?” Is this because of the fashion? Is this because of the purchaser’s taste? James Whistles once noted: “An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision.” And there is a grain of truth in that stat ement. But the fact is that a price is going up usually because of the name of an artist. Paintings by artists, who shaped the world of art, usually achieve these unbelievably high prices which cannot be apprehended by your average Mr Joe Public. When it comes to the world’s most expensive paintings, we should consider only these pieces which are owned by private collectors. What is interesting is the fact that the most famous paintings of art, which were created before 1800, usually are owned by museums.
Therefore only people with deep pockets

Therefore we will not take them into consideration in the article. However, it is worth underlining that Mona Lisa is believed to be the most valuable as it was insured for $100 million in 1962. According to the estimates, one of the most known paintings is these days worth staggering $670 million! Below, you will find the 5 most expensive paintings in the world bought by private collectors. If you do not want to look at these pieces of art as some kind investment, just remind yourself a statement of Twyla Tharp who once said: “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” Enjoy the list, maybe you will wax poetic and take bait for another piece of art for yourself.
1.PAUL CÉZANNE - 1892/93 “The Card Players” Price: $250 million The composition of Paul Cezanne is believed to be the world’s most expensive painting in the private hands. Back in 2011, Royal Family of Qatar bought “The Card Player” for as much as $250 million in a private sale. The exorbitant price might not be consider too high when we take into consideration that “The Card Players” is the last version of the painting in private hands. It is worth underlining that times, when the painting was created by the French artist, were dominated by post-impressionist trend. Analysts note that $250 million was paid as “The Card Players” painting shows all the best in the movement, including fine details and color intensity.
2. JACK POLLOCK - 1948 “Number 5, 1948” Price: $140 million The title of the world’s second most ex-

pensive painting goes to “Number 5, 1948” by Jack Pollock. The painting was sold by David Geffen in private sale in 2006. Till now, the name of the buyers is not known, but it has been widely speculated that David Martinez, Mexicann businessman, bought the piece by Jack Pollock. David Martinez’s lawyers have been denying the acquisition since 2006. The sum for “Number 5, 1948” is indeed staggering given the painting is an example of the contemporary art. Analysts note that the sum for the painting underlines the strength of the contemporary works and increasing interest in them.
3. WILLEM DE KOONING - 1952 -53 “WOMAN III” Price: $137.5 million The 1953 “Woman III” by Willem de Kooning also can glory in the title of one of the most expensive paintings in the world. In 2006, David Geffen sold the masterpiece to American billionaire Steven Cohen. Interestingly, “Woman III” is the only painting from the series still in private hands. Sandy Heller, world-known art advisor, underlined: “(Woman III edit.) is the most important post war painting not in a museum.”
Steve Cohen has been said to have paid as much as $137.5 million for the piece representing abstract expressionist style. 4. GUSTAV KLIMT - 1907 “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” Price: $135 million In the first 5 of the world’s most expensive paintings, “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” by Gustav Klimt also has its place. The purchase of the masterpiece was

made by Ronald Lauder in private sale also in 2006. The acquisition of “Adele Bloch-Bauer I”, one of the most expensive paintings in the world, is evidence that the multi-million purchases of art are usually made far away from auction houses. The painting is also exceptional in the collection created by Gustav Klimt as the model, Adele Bloch-Bauer, was the only person painted twice by the Aus-
trian symbolist painter. Without a doubt, “Adele Bloch-Bauer I” is the painting representing the wraith of the Vienna Secession movement. When one admires it, the sentence by Wassily Kandinsky seems to be imperative - “Every work of art is the child of its time, often it is the mother of our emotions.”

The ranking of the top 5 of the most expensive paintings in the world is closed by the unforgettable piece by Edvard Munch - “The Scream.” In contract to the first four paintings on the list, this piece of art was sold for astounding $119.9 million at auction held in Sotheby’s New York in May 2012. Rumors have been circulating, however, that the person behind the most expensive purchase of a painting at auction was Leon Black, an American billionaire known for his genuine love for art. Why art? Some people criticize the world’s richest for buying all these outstanding paintings as they believe that the pieces of art will not be shared with a large public. Indeed, some billionaires buy paintings, sculptures, etc. just to enlarge their private collections and admire them in the sanctity of their houses. But some do really take pleasure in sharing the beauty of art.
Thomas Merton once said: “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” And something has to be in the statement because art really makes it possible to know the human nature better. Whatever it is, love, desire, willingness of possession, the fact is that some people are willing to pay hefty sums for getting paintings. And the world’s most expensive paintings are undeniable proof of that. Therefore many are leaning toward a statement that art is luxury. You can take pride in what you have on your walls. But remember that art may not only symbolize your opulence as it may also become an inevitable part of your life.
Hedy Lamarr underlined: “A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts and inspires.” So just do not look at paintings as investment, look at them as the mirror of the human genius.
