This issue provides and informative, interpretive and interesting reading all together. Regards,

U.S. Auto Sales at its Best in Four Years The rate at which Americans have been buying cars is faster than they have done in four years. Who is accountable to this change in the U.S. auto sales? The rising gas prices and easier-to-get financing are driving more buyers to dealership showrooms. U.S. auto sales jumped to the highest level since before the recession, 16 percent, last month.

Much Stronger U.S. Auto Sales Analysts believe it too early for the sustainability of the February sales to be predicted and considering that March is

10

April 2012

typically a much stronger month for auto sales. Therefore it would be more indicative of long-term trends; however, the outlook has been bright enough that General Motors, Ford and Chrysler were seeking ways to increase production, to reach the top in U.S. auto sales. January started strong as sales hit an annual rate of 14.2 million. Automakers sold 12.8 million cars and trucks last year. Analysts believe that the U.S. automakers are far better prepared for the current gas price spike than they were four years ago, with far more high-mileage offerings.

The Angry Birds have their work cut out of them. As Angry Birds fans will know, Angry Birds Space is the latest iteration of the hugely popular multi-platform game but this time round has a physics approach, and obviously takes place in outer space and thus makes use of gravitational forces to beat them pesky green pigs. Apple Will Discuss What it wants to Do With Its $100 Billion Cash Apple Inc., the world’s most valuable company, plans to discuss its $100 billion in cash and investments in a conference call and is likely to announce a dividend. Just days after its stock touched $600 per share, a short press advisory was issued by Apple, saying it would hold a conference call to discuss the outcome of discussions about its cash balances. The move comes as investors have hollered for the company to return some of the money to shareholders.

Analysts believe that this has been a record for a public company to get it a healthy and modest dividend yield in the 2.5 percent area. Analysts believe Apple can have its dividend and its growth story too as it is just starting to penetrate emerging markets significantly and may release a revolutionary TV product later this year.

Krafts Food Will Now Be Called Mondelez Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft Foods has declared a plan to rename its corporate identity to Mondelez International Inc. Krafts food said that ‘Mondelez’ is a newly coined word that evokes the idea of delicious world. Monde derives from the Latin word which means world, and delez is an imaginary expression of delicious. Kraft Foods will divide to create two public companies before the end of 2012: a high-growth global snacks business and a high-margin North American grocery business.

What Inspired the New Name

14

April 2012

‘Mondelez International?’ Kraft Foods had invited employees from around the world, last fall, to suggest names for the new global snacks company. As part of this co-creation process, more than 1,000 employees participated, submitting more than 1,700 names for consideration. If the amendment is approved by the shareholders, the company expects the new name ‘Mondelez International’ will become effective when the global snacks company launches before the end of 2012

Leadership

and 10 Great Leaders from History - Patrick Alain

L

eadership has been defined as a process through which a person influences and motivates others to get involved in accomplishment of a particular task.

Industry Leaders Magazine

This single definition, although universally accepted, fails to define the particular paths and ways of people who are deemed as great leaders. All great leaders had something unique about them and yet they were bound by greatness that helped them to lead masses to innovation and new ideologies. Since the oldest times known to men, masses have been led by efficient leaders. Such men and women have been responsible for ushering their people into a new and more modern world as we know of it now. Although times have changed, the contributions of these great leaders cannot be forgotten and although practices and ways of doing things have changed as well, the ways of these great leaders cannot be overlooked. What made them great might still be applicable in today’s day and age. Here is a look at some of the greatest

The To the Pemon, the aboriginals of the region known as the Gran Sabana, these flattopped mountains are called tepuis. Mount Roraima is the tallest of tepui plateau in the Pakaraima chain in South America. Mount Roraima is on the three borders of Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. Most of these tepuis are remote and are almost permanently shrouded in mist and clouds, even during the dry season. Thunderstorms are frequent and heavy downpours are a way of life. Some of the tepuis even have swamplike surfaces while others have been washed by rainfall to almost sheer sandstone.

‘Well, this might look like it’s straight out of a sci-fi movie, but this natural wonder is completely real, and totally breathtaking.’ Mount Roraima, bordered by Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana, is surrounded on all four sides by sheer 400-meter high cliffs. While its cliff walls are only scalable by the most experienced of climbers, there is a hiking path up the mountain’s natural ramp-like path, usually a two-day hike. Cerro Autana is to the south of Puerto Ayacucho, a city on the outskirts of the Orinoco jungle near Colombia. This is a sacred mountain of the Piaroa Indians who believe it is the trunk of the tree bearing the fruits and seeds of the land. Mount Roraima is only 1220m high but has a labyrinth of caves near the summit. During certain times of the year, the sun’s rays shine in on one side of the mountain and out the other. Nearby is Cerro Pintado or the Painted Mountain, which has the largest petroglyphs in Venezuela, including a fifty metre snake that is said to represent the

Orinoco River. Mount Roraima is worth a visit for more reasons than its impressive cliffs. The majestic Mount Roraima is the highest mountain in the Pacaraima Mountains. Mount Roraima is part of Venezuela’s Canaima National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Angel Falls is also part of this beautiful park. Mount Roraima’s highest point is Maverick Rock at 2,810 meters (9,219 feet), and the whole of Mount Roraima’s fairly flat top surface area is surrounded by 400+ meter (1,312+ feet) high sheer cliffs. Mount Roraima can be climbed, though all routes besides the Paraitepui route require technical climbing gear. Mount Roraima, part of Venezuela’s 30000-squarekilometer Canaima National Park, is the site of the highest peak of the country of Guyana’s Highland Range. The mountains of this range, including Roraima, are con-

sidered to be some of the oldest geological formations known, some even dating back to two-billion years ago. Mount Roraima’s near daily rains have also created a unique ecosystem which includes several endemic species, including a unique carnivorous pitcher plant, and some of the highest waterfalls in the world. Mount Roraima has long held significance to the aboriginals of the area and features prominently in their legends and folklore. It was also the inspiration for the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel, The Lost World. This breathtaking mountain also made an impact in the entertainment world. Mount Roraima was the inspiration for Academy Award winning movie Up’s Paradise Falls. Mount Roraima possesses a spectacular array of unique and beautiful flora and fauna. The the appropriate type of soil and climate. Mount Roraima’s lush tropical rainforest causes light to be sporadic. Insectivorous plants have adjusted perfectly to life at the summit due to the poor and acidic soil located there. Similarly, the base of the mountain serves as a home to a plentiful amount of carnivorous plants. Unique, incomparable and rich are the only ways to describe Roraima’s biogeography. The steep sides, encircling rainforests, and altitude produce a distinctive climate in the surroundings that are significant for its ever-changing nature. Mount Roraima has a fluvial landscape. Streams are perennial due to the lack of a dry season. These meandering streams flow all year long. Streams on Mount Ro-

raima may appear calm, but they do have a high velocity which can make for quite a challenge. Fluvial erosion on Roraima has led to uniquely shaped valleys. Mount Roraima’s streams can easily reach stability and balance with the aid of Angel Falls. Since the waterfall is so tall, a large break in slope occurs and knick points are readily removed. The vast supply of flora and fauna found on Mount Roraima exists nowhere else in the entire world. Incredible scientific advancements have been made due to this fact. Botanists and biologists travel to the mountain to gain a better understanding of the evolution of these species. There are some plants on Roraima that are descendants of extinct breeds.

is engaged in buying stock, liaising with suppliers and handling orders for his internet marble empire, Marble King. Nearly for the past two years, petite Harli Jordean has been selling marbles. Marble King, Harli Jordean’s successful marble company, sells everything that is marblerelated, from affordable tubs of the glass playthings to significantly pricier items like Duke of York solitaire tables. And what’s great about this is that the mini CEO himself sources purchases and processes these items. London’s tiny tycoon has been running the blooming, prosperous and successful marbleking.co.uk website for two years, selling anything from tubs of marbles to £599 limited edition Duke of York solitaire tables.

Marble King is now turning over thousands of pounds each year - with orders flooding in from as far away as America.

‘This tiny little lad is not only absolutely adorable, but also a potential businessman.’ Harli Jordean’s marble company has a long story behind its evolution. After losing his

marbles to an older boy, Harli and his mom Tina turned to the Internet to find replacements for ordering more marbles. Yes, he literally ‘lost his marbles.’ And after they struggled to find anywhere dedicated to selling Harli’s favorite toy, he begged his mum, Tina, to let him start his own site, Marble King, selling marbles. And at just eight he started a successful marble company. Harli has always been mad about marbles. Infact, the 8 year old started the business two years ago after becoming frustrated with the lack of marble choice for his own collection.

Harli said, “At first some of them didn’t believe me - but they do now. They are some of my best customers”. Harli became so busy that he even had to employ his mom and two older brothers to help him cope with the sheer demand for products on his website. The world’s youngest CEO now has his mom and brothers in his management team, helping him meet the growing demand since his company, Marble Kings is earning profits now in the thousands. Within months of launching, Tina was shocked to see orders flooding in - with Harli handling them all on his own. In spite all this, Harli Jordean has never been overwhelmed. The primary school kid remains professional and ambitious for all his future plans. But, something’s really special. Number one on his list is becoming the next Sir Alan Sugar, and like the Apprentice boss, Harli Jordean wants to grow his young firm.

April 2012

Harli Jordean

Harli Jordean’s dream is to have a chain of stores like Hamleys. He dreams of making his store one of the biggest toy stores in the world selling all sorts of marbles. Harli’s friend love that he has his own business. The excitable kiddyneur kick-started his way to becoming a millionaire when he innocently began trading marbles with friends in the playground. Harli also said, “I love marbles and I love having my own marbles company. The astute businessman also revealed that the key to success is definitely delegation. I like being the boss, but I like to get others to do some of the work so that if something goes wrong it is not all my fault”. Harli’s mom Tina said, “Harli has been ob-

Tina said, “I helped him set up the site, but he’s now trading with the world instead of just the playground all on his own”. Harli has a hand in everything. He picks out stock at the suppliers and when orders come in he handles it all, packing, sending - everything. All Harli’s mom does is the accounts and tries and reels in his overenthusiastic ideas. Harli has been very dedicated even in getting his mom to drive him to deliver a package when they realized it wouldn’t get there on time in the post. Hero Harli has also set his sights on overtaking Sir Alan Sugar, right, as the nation’s most recognizable boss; perhaps a spell on the Young Apprentice is in order sessed with marbles ever since he was six. He used to sleep with them under his pillow. The last thing he talks about before going to bed is marbles and they are the first things he mentions in the morning”. Harli’s obsession became so big that his family started calling him the Marble King. So when he wanted to set up a website it was the natural name for it. Harli’s mom thinks that this would indeed be a good way to teach Harli some great life skills and show him responsibility. Tina never thought Harli’s marble company, Marble King, would become so popular that they would actually have to struggle to cope with the number of orders at times.

Tina says Harli now wants to mass-produce his own branded marbles in China - before selling them the world over in his own shops. Tina believes that as a boss he is very amenable and has his own ideas of how to do things. Harli is fiercely ambitious and is very determined and outgoing. But sometimes his ideas are so majestic that his mom and elder brothers have to resize them to make it a reality. Harli’s mom totally supports his passion. Not only does she help the pintsized entrepreneur run his marble selling website, but she also encourages her son to dream big. Tina said, “Sometimes his ideas are so grand we have to scale them back a bit.

‘At the minute Harli is pestering his mom about creating his own Marble King marbles, so that could well be the next step for him.’ 46

But his dream is still to own Britain’s biggest marble shop and open stores around the world. And yes, these days Harli is focusing on manufacturing his own brand of marbles to sell them around the world. And if his current success is any indication, I have no doubt they’ll be a bit hit”. The marble king of Stoke Newingto now turns over thousands of pounds every year and has orders coming in from as far away as America. claro Inc., a supplier of optical communications and laser technology, said Monday that it will merge in an all stock deal with Opnext Inc., the optical module and components vendor. Oclaro has agreed to acquire Opnext in a $179 million deal Monday.

The after merger things and figures that do not focus on the impact of the recent floods in Thailand that hit Opnext particularly hard. lion to $45 million within 18 months of the close of the transaction, which the executives expect will occur in the next three to six months. The company expects to take on $20 million to $30 million in restructuring and integration costs. Opnext shareholders are expected to receive a fixed ratio of 0.42 shares of Oclaro common stock for every share of Opnext common stock. Therefore, Oclaro shareholders will own 58% of the merged company. While Couder, Bosco, and other company participants declined to provide significant details of where those cost reductions will originate, Couder said that certain facilities would likely be downsized. Opnext’s production resources in Japan would seem to be a likely target, as Bosco said that he plans to move module production from those facilities. The merger will also provide a growing market for laser diodes, electronic components that are used in a wide range of industrial and consumer applications. Alain Couder said, “Our respective customers want to work with fewer, more strategic suppliers who can deliver the breadth

of technologies they need”. The merger would combine the number four (Oclaro) and five companies in optical components and subsystems based on Ovum’s market share estimation. Couder explained, “We have been looking at consolidating this industry for the past two years. And we have been looking at all kinds of combinations. I think in this industry everybody has been talking to everybody for the past two years”. It seems clear that the merger of Opnext and Oclaro is the most accretive combination that could be found. It has been done successfully in the Bookham Avanex merger; it is an integration of the same kind. It is believed that the industry is in a situation right now where such a merger can be a very important step toward a simpler industry. Bosco believes that the other thing is that the market is changing. Oclaro started out in a customization world about 12 years ago, 15 years ago. Then it went to a standardized module world. And now it’s going back into customization plus modules. So its going to be selling components as well as modules to customer bases, depending on the type of product.

Although, armies across the world have numerous of differences and variations, ranging from their structure, composition, technology, training and the abilities of their members, there is always something in common which allows us to figure the armies overall strength. A common measuring tool for figuring this is the size, which consists of the number of personnel serving in the organization. A Wise Chinese man once said,

“In order to attack the strong, you must nurture them to make them even stronger.” People commonly believe that every country should have the power to provide employment, especially if it has a population in excess of 1 billion. Well, that’s just a saying, but it is even applicable to countries that have a lesser population. So, this obviously shouldn’t come as a surprise that the world’s most populous countries are home to some of the biggest employers on the earth. Chinese military is an integrated military organization of all - land, sea, strategic missile and air forces of the People’s Republic of China. The People’s Liberation Army was established on August 1, 1927 — celebrated annually as ‘People’s Liberation Army Day’. The People’s Liberation Army is the military arm of the Communist Party of China. Its emblem consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for ‘Eight One’, which refers to August 1, the date of the 1927 Nanchang Uprising. The People’s Liberation Army was founded on 1 August 1927 during the Nanchang

Uprising when troops of the Kuomintang (KMT) rebelled under the leadership of Zhu De, He Long, Ye Jianying and Zhou Enlai shortly after the end of the first Kuomintang–Communist alliance. They were then known as the Chinese Red Army. Between 1934 and 1935, the Red Army survived several campaigns led against it by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek and engaged in the Long March. The People’s Liberation Army encompasses five main service branches: Ground Force, the Navy, the Air Force, the Second Artillery (strategic missile force), and the People’s Armed Police. Following the 200,000 troop reduction from 2003 to 2005, the total end-strength of the People’s Liberation Army has been reduced from 2.5 million to 2.3 million. There are 660,000 personnel serving in the People’s Armed Police (PAP), and 1.2-1.5 million in the reserve forces and militia. istry of Public Security. People sometimes confuse considering PAP as a branch of the People’s Liberation Army.

militaries - you have active forces, reserve forces, civilians, and also those that might be working as contractors - so it depends really what you’re trying to count when you look at headline numbers. James Hackett, the editor of Military Balance said, “What we try and do is look at active service personnel, so those in uniform who are capable of operating on behalf of the state to fulfill the national security concerns of the militaries”. May be this is one important reason that the People’s Liberation Army is large compared to other militaries stems from its composition as a mainly conscript-based force. Now other militaries in the West and across the world have moved to volunteer corps. In the 1980s, the Chinese military was shrunk considerably to liberate resources for economic development, resulting in the comparative decline in resources devoted to the People’s Liberation Army. Reform and modernization have today resumed their position as the People’s Liberation Army’s priority objectives, although the armed forces’ political loyalty to the

CPC has remained a leading concern. Another area of concern to the political leadership was the People’s Liberation Army’s involvement in civilian economic activities. These activities were thought to have impacted People’s Liberation Army readiness and have led the political leadership to attempt to divest the People’s Liberation Army from its non-military business interests. The People’s Liberation Army is studying the unconventional tactics that could be used to exploit the vulnerabilities of a more technologically advanced enemy. This has been reflected in the two parallel guidelines for the People’s Liberation Army ground forces development. While speeding up the process of introducing new technology into the force and retiring the older equipment, the People’s Liberation Army has also placed an emphasis on asymmetric warfare, including finding methods of using existing equipment to defeat a technologically superior enemy.

fter about 244 years, the Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc., a company based in Chicago, is departing from print. Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. said that it will stop publishing print editions of its flagship encyclopedia for the first time ever since the sets were originally published in 1768, more than 200 years ago. Industry Leaders Magazine

April 2012

The first ever Encyclopaedia Britannica has been in print since it was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1768. There have been more than 7 million sets of Encyclopaedia Britannica printed and sold over the years, an essential home reference library lining bookshelves. It will stop being available when the current stock runs out, the company said. But you need not worry about that. You can still look it up to its digital version online. Encyclopaedia Britannica executives say that the coolly authoritative, gold-lettered reference books that were marketed door-

64

to-door for generations, employed thousands of employees and sold more than 100,000 sets as recently as 1990, its best year ever, when it generated $650 million in revenue. Within a few years, sales of Encyclopaedia Britannica began to tumble, as consumers opted for home computers bundled with CD-ROM encyclopedias over the $1,500 leather-bound sets. And of late, the rise of high-speed Internet and Wikipedia shifted reference libraries from bookshelves to online magazines and reference websites, with only a few thousand copies of the

Industry Leaders Magazine

printed version trickling out each year to libraries, schools and handful homeowners.

‘There are about 4,000 sets left, selling for $1,395 each on the Britannica website, after which, the iconic publication will be history.

Jorge Cauz, the president of Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. said, “It’s a rite of passage in this new era. Some people will feel sad about it and nostalgic about it. But we have a better tool now. The Web site is continuously updated, it’s much more expansive and it has multimedia.” Having the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the bookshelf was akin to a station wagon in the garage or a black-and-white Zenith in the den, a possession coveted for its usefulness and as a goalpost for an aspiring middle class, in the 1950s. With accepting the realities of digital age and of competition from Wikipedia, Encyclopaedia Britannica will focus primarily on its online encyclopedias and educational curriculum for schools. The final print version is the 32-volume 2010 edition, which

weighs 129 pounds and includes new entries on global warming and the Human Genome Project. About 500,000 subscribers pay $70 per year for full online access to Encyclopaedia Britannica. Jorge Cauz said,

“We know we have a challenge there. The challenge is not of preference. The challenge is of distribution and how to please an algorithm that tries to identify quality, but doesn’t really quite get it right all the time.” About 30 percent of Britannica’s content is available for free through search engines. Encyclopaedia Britannica hopes to drive more traffic to its site, making the full database now accessible for a one-week free trial. Although some may bemoan the loss of the print version, Britannica’s very survival is an accomplishment following a digital revolution that spelled the end for more than a few reference publishers. The company has been offering online editions of its encyclopedia for 20 years, with more than 65% of its online sales coming from educational institutions; the online edition is updated constantly. Jorge Cauz says, “The value proposition in our case is to be a reliable source. The print set can’t bring that reliability because it gets obsolete so quickly and because it doesn’t have all the material that is online”.

randing is what matters more in luxury than in any other sector. People shell out thousands of dollars for a handbag partly for the material costs, partly for the beautiful design, but primarily for the brand name. Industry Leaders Magazine

People buy fake handbags that bear the designer name. Why is it so? It’s primarily because brand name matters the most. Luxury and abundance go hand in hand but when it comes to brands so does quality and respect. There are quite a lot of brands which are respected in the world because of the quality, workmanship and the designer behind them. The main reason people purchase any of these brands is simply pleasure and luxury. And well, there is nothing wrong with enjoying a little luxury, isn’t it? The list of brands below is purely a reflection of the possessions for the elitist consumers who are at the pinnacle of richness and affluence. These personalized luxury brands not only add glamour to one’s lifestyle, but also carry with them a class and panache, which is admired, appreciated and in some cases envied by others.

Gucci The fashion icon, Gucci, was founded by Italian designer Guccio Gucci in 1921 and is probably one of the most valuable & luxurious brands in the world.

‘They were one of the first brands to enter the online arena and they’ve led the way for other brands.’ Gucci sells its products in over 400 stores worldwide as well as on the Internet. Gucci’s energy has decreased a bit this year, but a 2% dip isn’t very significant. And the designer, Frida Giannini, is hitting her stride from a design perspective. If this season’s Gucci cover presence is any indication, then the brand should definitely stay strong over the next few years. One of its signature products, a bamboo handled handbag, was first released in 1947. Gucci has a bunch of men’s wear, women’s wear product lines including handbags, watches, shoes, fragrance, jewelry, sunglasses, belts, wallets, scarves, ties.

By the end of last financial year, more than 7800 Goldwind turbines were in service, setting a standard of excellence and reliability around the globe. Goldwind´s integrated business model encompasses research and development, manufacturing, and comprehensive turnkey solutions including wind resources evaluation, feasibility studies, siting calculation, project management and diagnosis, project financing and O&M. Goldwind collaborates with a variety of international partners to advance industry-leading supply chain strategies, production capabilities, innovative turbine designs and R&D programs that have helped the company capture 9.5% of the global market and rank among the top four global wind companies in terms of market share.

The specialization: It is principally engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing large-sized wind turbine generator sets. The Company’s major products include 600kilowatt (kW), 750 kW, 1.2 megawatt (MW), 1.5 MW Permanent Magnet Direct Drive (PMDD) and 2.5 MW PMDD series wind turbine sets. The Company also provides wind power technology service, development and sale of wind power projects and technology transfer service.

‘Goldwind has enjoyed annual 100% market share growth for the last 8 years consecutively.’ During the year ended December 31, 2009, the Company installed 3669 sets

of 750 kW wind turbine generator, 1583 sets of 1.5MW wind turbine generator, and 1 set of 2.5 MW and 3.0 MW wind turbine generator each. The Company distributes its products mainly within the domestic market with some installations in foreign markets such as three of its 1.5 MW wind turbines in Pipestone, Minnesota, USA. In 2007, Goldwind Science & Technology Co., Ltd. reported that it has been holding 25.25% market share in China’s wind power market, again ranking top amongst other suppliers.

Permanent Magnet Direct-Drive Technology Permanent magnet direct-drive technology consists of a wind-driven turbine rotor turning a permanent magnet synchronous generator, which does not require a gearbox to operate. The generator produces alternating current which is delivered to the grid via ACDC-AC conversion by a full-power converter. Goldwind has successfully introduced a specialized wind turbine series, which adopts this technology and are efficiently adapted to the PRC’s diverse operating conditions, including low and high temperatures, high altitude, low wind velocity and coastal areas.

However, it is fair to say that Goldwind may be feeling the pressure from steadily increasing competition. Mr Wu Gang recently referred to the competition as “savage” and worried about what the effects of this “self-destructively pernicious” competition would be on the healthy development of the wind industry. The future of Wind Industry: Developing wind farms in high-altitude areas has become a priority for Chinese power companies and wind turbine manufacturers, as both look to exploit rich wind resources on China’s plains. “We have tailor-made turbine models featuring larger blades and greater capacities for insulation, heat dissipation and lightening protection, in order to cope with harsher geographical and climate conditions in plateau areas,” said Wu Gang. Wind power has developed by leaps and bounds in China over recent years, as it plays a crucial role in fulfilling the Chinese government’s pledge to have nonfossil fuels account for 15 percent of the country’s primary energy consumption by 2020. By the end of 2010, China had 44.7GW cumulative installed wind capacity, beating the United States as the world’s largest wind power developer. China plans to have 100GW wind power connected to the grid by 2015.
