Industry Leaders Magazine [September 2015]

Airbnb scores valuation up to $ 25.5 billion

Airbnb is on the brink of raising $1.5 billion that would boost its valuation up to $25.5 billion, as it comes forth as the latest sharing economy company from the US. The company attempts to tap into booming demand in Asia. According to PrivCo, the price tag keeps raising for hot startups. But, the recent investments done by the company was two-fold the amount that was previously vested. Airbnb’s recent business valuation is an eye-popping figure, and also a part of a private IPO trend. These days, financial institutions like mutual funds, Hedge funds and big foreign investors are investing money in small startups like Uber and Airbnb. These financial institutions give such startups an opportunity to raise their funds as much as possible they can with an IPO call, but it should be devoid of the hassles of public disclosures. Sam Hamadeh, CEO of PrivCo, said that every investor keeps a watch on a narrow window to raise funds in the private market, and the public market would not absorb that sort of valuation. But, having such sky-high valuations makes it more challenging for the company to dissolve in the future. Hamadeh said that if the company is valued at $25 billion, and is not yet public; then he can count a number of companies on his finger tips, who can write a check for that amount. The fact cannot be denied that Airbnb is the fastest growing online company. It was founded in 2008, and has since successfully been expanded to 34,000 cities, and 190 countries. However, still, the company is facing major regulatory hurdles in significant markets like New York City, and others. According to PrivCo, Airbnb lost about $150 million last year, and it’s on track to lose about $200 million in 2015.

Alibaba Group Holding to invest $4.6 billion in China electronics retailer Suning

China’s largest e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd announced Monday that it will invest 28.3 billion yuan ($4.56 billion) in Suning Commerce Group Co Ltd to take a 19.99 percent stake in Suning Commerce Group Co Ltd. The cross-investment deal allies China’s leading e-commerce player with one of the major retailer of electronics products in China. With a 19.99 percent stake, Alibaba will become Suning’s second-largest shareholder while Suning would invest 14 billion yuan ($2.25 billion) to acquire a 1.1 percent stake in Alibaba. Besides its offline retail business, the company has had more success than any other retailer in China in a transition to e-commerce, creating an online store that not only includes the gadgets and appliances found in its physical stores, but also everything from food and baby products to jewelry and furniture. Due to that shift to the web, Suning has one of China’s top five e-commerce stores, much bigger in scale than Amazon’s whole Chinese business. In a joint statement, the two companies said that the partnership would integrate their strengths in offline and online commerce. China’s leaders have efficiently developed a broad development strategy called Internet Plus designed to consolidate online and offline industries and encourage more technology-driven, high-value economic output. The government of Beijing has vocally supported China’s e-commerce industry as well as the adoption of robotics and computerised manufacturing. For Alibaba, the deal could fortify its competitiveness against its main e-commerce rival JD.com, which has traditionally enjoyed good sales of electronics and gadgets. Alibaba has been seeking to reinforce its electronics offerings in recent months, initiating tie-ups with Gome Electrical Appliances Holding Ltd and Haier Electronics Group Co Ltd to offer home appliances on its online marketplaces.

Apple, Samsung in talks with carrier trade group to adopt e-SIM technology

According to a new report from The Financial Times, Samsung and Apple are both in advanced talks with the GSMA, the mobile telecom industry association that supports the GSM standard, to participate in a standardized Embeddable electronic SIM card. Electronic SIMs (or e-SIMs) don’t lock users into a specific carrier network and would allow them to quickly and easily switch between mobile networks. The international carriers that seem to support the change include Deutsche Telekom, Hutchinson Whampoa, Orange, Telefonica, and Vodafone. A host of hardware companies including Apple and Samsung have long been contending to their SIM project to be included in industry standards. The participation of these two tech giant makes this project even more pivotal as they are the most profitable companies in the industry. While, Apple controls the high end of the market, Samsung is one of the largest mobile device makers throughout the rest of the market. Earlier this year, Apple launched an electronic SIM of its own called Apple SIM to provide customers the ability to switch carriers without having to go through the inconvenience of changing SIMs. Meanwhile, Samsung has also been publicizing its own ideas for new SIMs, ideas that would give it another lucrative revenue stream as it controls the patents behind its various SIM proposals. However, certain technical aspects of the standard still have to be worked out. This means that even if a final deal is reached sometime in the near future, it will be at least a year before devices using an electronic SIM are launched in the market.

GM to invest $5 billion to develop a new line-up for emerging markets

General Motors Co. on Tuesday said it will be investing $5 billion over several years to expand its Chevrolet line-up to gain market share and help the company grow in emerging markets including Brazil, China, India and Mexico. General Motors Co. will work with SAIC Motor Corp., one of its Chinese jointventure partners to replace many of GM’s existing subcompacts and compacts that are sold in emerging markets starting in 2019, President Dan Ammann said. The move represents GM’s first major development project in China to address global markets. The cars will feature a new engine and a new body design and will carry the Chevrolet badge. The U.S. auto-maker wants to develop a common blueprint, or architecture, that can be tailored for particular styles or regional markets thereby improving margins. GM’s strategy displays a bet on global growth patterns and a new approach to the Chevrolet brand. The new breed of cars will be built in existing plants that will be retooled for the new, low-cost architecture, and will include various body styles. Along with GM’s $5 billion investment, SAIC will also spend an undisclosed sum on the project. The project represents GM’s increasing association with SAIC. It will be the first time these two companies have developed a platform together. By cutting down costs, GM can start offering buyers in emerging markets more safety features, fuel-saving technologies and creature comforts such as Internet connectivity, Ammann said.

Growth of Renewables Surpassed Fossil Fuels in the Power Sector

Renewable energy’s share in all types of utility consumption— at present, around 10 per cent, will need to increase vividly to satisfy the vision that President Barack Obama and other industry leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy economies endorsed a week ago. Supporters of renewable energy said that the world is already - decoupling carbon emissions from economic growth, pointing to preliminary data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) demonstrating that carbon emissions from the utility sector didn’t rise last year, despite of the fact that the global economy grew by 3 per cent. Recently, the IEA said that investments in renewable need to increase from $270 billion last year to $400 billion in 2030 in order to sustain a transition to a low-carbon economy. The REN21 report said that renewable represented nearly 60 per cent of the global power capacity added in 2014. Wind report made the biggest hop among the renewable in 2014, with 51GW of new capacity, 50 per cent of it in China. Solar power also has expanded; however, from a low level; it represents just 1 per cent of worldwide power production. Geothermal power has added only 700MW of capacity, 50 per cent of it in Kenya. Other renewable sources, for example, ocean energy from tidal forces, are not yet having any significant impact. In heating and cooling of buildings and industry that represents about 50 per cent of global energy consumption, there was little transform from the prior year, with renewable accounting to around 8 per cent, mostly biomass. In road transport their share has been just 3.5 per cent in 2014, up from 2 per cent in 2007. As fuel for jets, renewable are still in the experimental stage.

IBM purchases Merge Healthcare could change the face of the U.S. health management

IBM’s courtship with Watson goes on. The tech behemoth has announced a great deal; it will purchase Merge Healthcare by $1 billion. Merge Healthcare is the supplier of medical imaging gear. It plans to integrate this into a Watson franchise to boost the vision of Watson. Now the Merge’s technologies will be blended with a Watson Health Cloud mix to produce new understanding, patient-focused history as well as current previews, health records that will be electronic, other medical data and data from other wearable equipments, in an environment enabled with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). To bolster health initiative by Watson, IBM has already taken over companies like Explorys and Phytel and announced a major health partner for Watson, CVS. This new takeover by IBM is done to specifically show its new competence and to enhance new research and learning skills in the fields of radiology diagnostics. The main initiative behind the Watson Health is to provide new data driven system for healthcare, the one, in which a medical professional can combine with Watson to amend the entire experience of the healthcare system. The increasing complexity of medical imaging makes even a professional technician have trouble processing it and understanding how it might link into current medical research and the patient’s history of medicine. Watson will support medical professionals to interpret and go through images that are complex. It will make imaging and scanning machines incredibly great, which will result in the generation of dense and sometimes images in motion. Watson will help in automatically detecting diseases and take considerate measurements and understand the disease. Merge Healthcare is yet not a fully done contract. It is still subject to administrative, shareholder approval. Once it is done with this hurdle, it will close later in this year.

The coal industry has opposed against fossil fuels, opting instead to highlight new technologies, which improve the efficiency of coal-fired power plants, and without such coal technologies, goals to curb carbon emissions is unable to reach at a satisfactory level.

Industry Leaders Magazine [September 2015]

Oil and Gas Companies back global agreement to curb carbon emissions

Natural gas plants and many oil companies produce gas that releases about half the CO2 emissions of lower levels of air pollution and coal-fired plants. Shell CEO - Ben van Beurden told an energy conference that was held in Paris that a coal-to-gas shift therefore saves lives today and ensures a sustainable energy for a better tomorrow. He called natural gas as - clean-burning ally - to renewable sources like, wind and solar. BP Chief Executive - Bob Dudley had a similar message saying that they need to describe more evidently that gas is not so much part of the problem as part of the solution. The World Coal Association, said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press that the coal industry has opposed against fossil fuels, opting instead to highlight new technologies, which improve the efficiency of coal-fired power plants, and without such coal technologies, goals to curb carbon emissions are unable to reach at a satisfactory level. The group stated that growing renewable energy demand means - coal is a central part of the energy source, with demand forecast to increase. It was estimated that about 40 per cent of the world’s electricity is generated from coalfired power plants. Many countries have participated in energy-hungry economies like, India and China, where coal is a reliable and affordable option. However, many environmental advocacy groups are suspicious of the motives behind the oil-and-gas industry’s attacks on coal and want to eliminate it, to protect it against influence climate policy. They noted that despite of heeding calls to let fossil fuels remain in the ground, oil and gas companies are driving into new areas of exploration like the remote and ecologically sensitive Arctic.

He said that the difference in monthly bill of $10 and $15 meant a lot to the people that earn low-wage per day.

The ancient land of Abyssinia, the cradle of humankind, now called Ethiopia, is the undisputed birthplace of coffee. Discovered in the 10th century, Considering it was only a matter of time until the highly inventive Ethiopians’ caffeine fix quickly spread through trade the regions in the Arabian Peninsula. It is said to have entered the New World as a commodity crop in the 1600s, turning for coffee into one of the most important commodities in world plantations trade by the mid-19th century. Today, coffee has become an integral part of our are also social culture, highly patronized by poets, writers, artists and even celebrities. It won’t be wrong, home to the if we refer to it as “liquid gold”. It comes second most fragile after oil as the world’s most traded commodities. Yet, these caffeine culture has crossed skyscrapers ecosystems over the last few decades, leading to an increased demand, which has started having a negative impact of our planet, on the environment, with sun-grown coffee and monoculture as a norm. Considering the regions for the potentials coffee plantations are also home to the most fragile and threat ecosystems of our planet, the potentials and threat for critical damage is just huge. for critical Coffee is cultivated in subtropical and tropical areas over higher elevations, in rough hilly areas and damage is grows under the shades of canopy trees. However, just huge. due to the hike in demands, this harmless agricultural form has been kicked out by the techniques known as “Sun Cultivation”. This has led to a detrimental impact on the ecosystem, causing harm to the environment and biodiversity like deforestation, water pollution and contamination- due to increased agro-chemical usage, enormous amount of wastage, degraded soil quality parameters. For producers: approximately 125 million people across the globe earn their living through coffee. They are the class of people that might not get affected by any coffee crisis like the coffee farmers or low leveled traders would. For farmers and agricultural labors, it proves the hardest hit due to insufficient salaries, jobs or income sources. Moreover, price fall can have a detrimental effect on the quality of coffee. Fall in prices means a cut in production cost, which leads to agricultural labors and coffee farmers being forced to work faster and skip tasks that require more time. Coffee is a substance that requires precisely hand-picked beans for the rich and premium quality, and if it is extracted in bulks that definitely would degrade the quality. To put an end to the inequality suffered by coffee farmers, coffee companies and a celebrity roast are turning into coffee philanthropists, investing in coffee for more than just a batch of good taste.

Hugh Jackman & Laughing Man Worldwide

“

Laughing

Man Worldwide stands as a testimony to Jackman’s reflective journey on the struggles of Ethiopian

“

coffee

farmers.

32

In 2009, “X-Men” actor, Hugh Jackman traveled to Ethiopia as a World Vision ambassador, to see how coffee is farmed and explore how fair-trade practices can change the lives of Ethiopian farmers. There, Jackman met a young, poor but ambitious farmer named Dukale and spent a day with him on his coffee farm. Jackman discovered the obstacles that small coffee growers face on a daily basis: like thousands of coffee farmers in East Africa, Dukale was isolated with slender access to the markets and opportunities of the developed world. These farmers, cannot sell their coffee for a fair price. The issue was indicative of a much bigger hitch: Small coffee growers, in spite of having created a great product, Fair Trade – in which fair prices are paid to the producers - were not a priority. To challenge this issue, Jackman started Laughing Man Worldwide, an organization that provides farmers like Dukale direct access to the market, providing them a marketplace for free-trade coffee and tea. The venture stands as a testimony to Jackman’s reflective journey on the struggles of Ethiopian coffee farmers. Jackman did not start the business with the hopes of raking in millions. Hugh contributes 100% of his profits to the Laughing Man Foundation, which he created to support educational programs, and community development as well as social entrepreneurs around the world. After returning from Ethiopia, Hugh decided to make some practical changes. However, he discovered that making a change to benefit the farmer was far from practical. The carcass of the coffee business, comprising of cafés, subsidizer and the distributor, make it nearly impossible for the small farmer to benefit from it. Hugh wanted to enter the marketplace and connect the dots, such that organic coffee growers like Dukale could get fair prices for their premium beans that are harvested using environmentally friendly methods. Laughing Man Worldwide, the coffee, tea and chocolate company’s goal is to honor the work of organic coffee growers and pay fair prices for premium beans. Laughing Man has opened two more coffee shops in the US, partnering with more and more farmers like Dukale who gain access to the fair-trade market. This year in spring, coffee giant Keurig started selling Dukale’s java in its ubiquitous K-cups.

Brewing Smiles with Fair-traded Coffee

“

With Fair-Trade System, we are

“

moving a step forward in the direction of environmental sustainability and empowerment of coffee farmers

About 170,000 kilograms of Fair-traded Coffee, which is bellyful to produce 24 million coffee cups- was traded in South Africa in 2014. Forty-five percent of this amount was sold for coffee shops, hotels and restaurants. Few countries, including Ethiopia, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Costa Rica, EI Salvador, Tanzania, and Nicaragua, have immensely benefitted from the Fair Trade system. Fair-traded coffee is chosen for its environmental and social impacts, because it is grown, sustainably and is organic; it not only ensures the best-quality of African beans that enhances a phenomenal coffee experience, but also aids an idea that farmers deserve a fair wage policy and ability to aid their near ones and communities. The Fair-traded coffee system empowers small scale coffee suppliers and farmers, it helps to stimulate local employment contingencies while governing a sustainable environment. Coffee suppliers certified with Fair- trade take care of the needs of businesses on various scales, offering suitable packages for food caterers and bulk buyers for big chains. Step by step, Fair-traded coffee is making tangible changes in farmers’ lives. Their children can have access to facilities like education and medical care, which was not available to them before. Infrastructure is being built and steps against poverty are progressing. These progresses have been possible because the client countries do realize the positive effects that they are making by deciding where to invest their money on. Recent years have seen a drastic shift of local coffee businesses to Fairtraded coffee trading system. It is like moving a step forward in the direction of environmental sustainability and empowerment of coffee farmers. It has the power to revolutionize the global market of economy, demonstrating that the entire world community can put the endeavors together to fulfill everyone’s needs. In the debates over innovation in coffee acquisition practices, Fair- traded coffee eventually wins consensus because of its premium benefits to farmers, consumers and the coffee industry.

The Best of Soneva Fushi Some of us don a mask and a fin and slip into the water of island beaches to honor snorkeling and scuba diving. For those, not in the mood to snorkel, the pristine beaches surrounding luxury oceanfront resorts are perfect for leisurely laps. But, some great beaches beckon for us to freedive, one of the most challenging sport where divers descend into the depths of the ocean sans a tank of compressed air, with the aim of reaching the farthest distance possible below the surface. At luxury resort Soneva Fushi in Baa Atoll, Maldives, you can learn the basics from Hanli Prinsloo, South African freediving champion and founder of the I Am Water Ocean Conservation Trust, along with Peter Marshall, an eight-time backstroke world record holder. The Last Wilderness, name of the experience, where a maximum of five participants will learn the art of freediving, between October 5 to 10, and November 25 to December 2. Home to one of the largest diversity of sea life, if you’re lucky, you can expect to see the kaleidoscopic corals, turtles, manta rays, and whale sharks. With the UNESCO-protected reef and 57 villas (each with a private beach), Soneva Fushi boasts a pristine biosphere. The Last Wilderness has partnered with I Am Water, where $100,000 out of $150,000 will go to charity for ocean awareness and experience programmes conducted by the conservation group. It covers an inclusive stay for five nights at Soneva Fushi, and all tuition. The Last Wilderness is not only for the ultra-sporty or existing divers. “We have had students go from holding their breath for 30 seconds to between two and five minutes,” says Prinsloo. “At the end of this course, participants will go from being surface snorkelers to 50ft freedivers and experience the ocean in an entirely new way.” Each day you wake up in a luxurious accommodation, and join Prinsloo for a session in the ocean, after enjoying a complimentary breakfast. For the rest of the time, one can relax on the stunning beach, soak up the sunshine, and explore the warmth and beauty of this castaway island.

Reaching a century and a half is a reason good enough for watch companies to celebrate, with Zenith being no different. The high-end luxury Swiss watch manufacturer recently reached the milestone of a century and a half, and celebrated with a wonderful way, by making limited edition watches in the name of the English rock & roll deities, The Rolling Stones. Just before The Rolling Stones go on their last tour, Zenith is rolling out the limited edition Zenith El Primero Chromonaster 1969 watch in tribute. While, the classic Zenith El Primero Limited Edition has the trademark tongue and lips mark of the band on its dial, the 2015 version is sans everything else, but the rear sapphire crystal caseback window and the embossed on the leather strap. Next, is the in-house made Zenith El Primero caliber 4061 automatic chronograph, which operates at a “high beat” of 5Hz. It uses the popular “semiskeletonized exhibition windows” along with a 30-minute chronograph. While, the 250 piece limited classic edition retailed for $9,800, the 2015 limited edition 1000 pieces will retail at a price of $14,200. The watch is available at Zenith dealers around the world. In Here and Now

Loca ore Mo ement T

here used to be a time, when all human beings hunted and amassed their own food. All that we ate was a gift from the Mother Earth. As time passed by, gathererhunter communities became well-organized, settled, and their traditional food gathering habits changed. Today our society is highly globalized from every aspect, including the food we feed ourselves with. The question is where is this food coming from? Who is the source supplier? Who is harvesting it? How much distance the food might have travelled before landing down on our plate? The stretch from which our food arrives represents our dissolution from the knowledge of production, processing, and transportation of our food. If you have ever tried a tomato that is freshly picked, you will definitely agree that the fresh and local foods taste better. What it would be like if we ate everything that is delicious, freshly picked, and nutritiously dense? Welcome to the Locavore Movement. 48

Organic & Natural

A

locavore is a person who is committed to consuming food that is grown within their local association or community. A myriad of locavores initiated this change in lifestyle by beginning to eat the home-land grown foods,i.e., the one available within the radius of a 100 mile from their home and then acclimatize when important, sometimes including an area as large as an entire region or state. The crucial thing is that by establishing a geographical borderline, people are becoming conscious of the origin of their own food. Locavores buy local food directly from health food stores, CSA’s, and the farmer’s market. A good consumption of local food leads to a boost in the local economy. Locavores prefer the support to small businesses and farmers in their communities, that consumption of locally harvested food can provide. The money earned through local businesses stays within the community. Paying a visit to the farmer’s market is an exceptional way to discover the locally grown food and help the local economy. Instead of passing through a middle man, the farmer gets to take away the entire money he has been handed for a direct deal of fresh fruits or vegetables. South Florida is one such region in the U.S. that is teaming up with such farmers to explore the local market furthermore. The locally grown food items are fresher, more nutritious and more delicious. The production that are typically sold in the supermarkets are grown on manufactory farms, often drenched with high amounts of chemical fertilizers, whereas, production sold at the farmer’s market or CSA are the ones that have been often picked within 24 hours of purchase. This freshness not only keeps the taste of your food intact, but also adds nutritional values in heaps. Nutritional value is a measure that fades away as time passes by.

Our food, before ending up on our dining tables, travels an average of 1,500 miles. This food supply globalization has somber consequences for the ecosystem and environment, health, communities and taste buds. The food shipped from thousands of miles away contributes to the ecological measures ofa monoculture based on large scales. The consumption of food grown locally cut greenhouse gas emission that is responsible for being one of the biggest contributors to global warming and conserves fuel. The local markets keep a stock of food items that are grown using natural and organic methods. The locavore movement has created a spur in economic drive by dumping dollars into the economy of the local farm; it is growing at a tremendous pace. The search reports from 1997- 2007, from the USDA Economic Research Service states that, direct agricultural sales hiked by 105%. The number of farmers’ market in the U.S. increased from 1,775 to 6,132, in the years 1994- 2010. CSA reported a remarkable growth too. The latest member of the bourgeoning Locavore movement is none other than the Space Mogul ‘NASA’. Fresh, space grown veggies were on the menu for the first time in history at the International Space Station, where NASA astronauts sampled “Outredgeous” red romaine lettuce as part of NASA’s VEG-01 experiment. The lettuce had been growing in a specially designed chamber since early July, under the care of U.S. astronaut Scott Kelly. Astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted a selfie that shows him with a batch of space grown vegetables in the background. “Tomorrow we’ll eat the anticipated veggie harvest,” he tweeted. “But first, lettuce take a #selfie. #YearInSpace” The Vegetable Production System (nicknamed VEGGIE) technology carries out quite a few purposes apart from allowing NASA astronauts to munch on nutritious food. The program will help NASA explore the prospect of growing vegetables in space, as the space agency plans the exploration of Mars and other planets. Sending food from Earth is expensive, i.e. around $10,000 per pound. While, the cost of growing it on board is considerably economical.

Locavore Movement in the Fashion Industry

A

lthough the term “locavore” has been limited up to symbolizing the food movement, the term has now started collaborating itself with the other industries as well. General Motors and Apple Inc., are returning their production and manufacturing closer to their root of origin. In a similar manner, smaller productions and fashion worlds are thriving in their local associations and communities. Locavore may have a realistic tenor, but it is grabbing traction across the world. Finding locally made watches and trading it not too far from the local market is a great accomplishment. Locavore version of the watch industry means the revival of locally made, non-Swiss watches from Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States. Of course, these will immensely appeal all the aficionados, watch lovers, and collectors who are less keen on absolute Swiss or Geneva precision and the age- old Swiss heritage but want to belong to a cool subset.

‘‘

Clothing Industry The Locavore movement is slowly creeping in the fashion industry in an alternative form known as“Slow-fashion design”, which is socially and environmentally affected in a sustainable way because it utilizes local suppliers, producers and materials while honoring traditional knowledge and skills. Several high labels are keeping a fraction of their design

sustainable and traditional using local textiles and local raw materials resulting in being able to create the garments with a significantly lower carbon footprint and reduced use of energy.

Shoe Industry Italian luxury shoe brand Ferragamo’s designer, Massimiliano Giornetti, announced his plan for the brand Florentine’s next outlet opening in China’s Shanghai. He is planning to have this outlet that would be designed with entirely local themes in focus and a capsule collection exclusive to this store. This is yet another twist in the Locavore movement striking the fashion industry. The man behind the brand, Salvatore Ferragamo, he introduced the local and inexpensive materials like cork to his designed footwear. He hailed from a poor background and so he insisted on keeping a little element of local and inexpensive material in his customized luxury footwear designed for notable Hollywood biggies and others.

While some debate that the Locavore movement is just a revolt against globalization, however there are others with apprehension of not knowing what goes into manufacturing and production. But the manifested reality is that Locavore Movement was hatched with an interest in eco- consciousness and sustainability.

Blooming Fantasy over Gig Economy Not so long ago, the only people who used to hunt for ‘Gigs’ were artists, musicians and freelancers. For the rest, their aim used to be on finding a “real” job with a fixed salary and paid leave, for the purpose of a stable future. This scenario has taken a 180 turn. Today, the majority of people are choosing to make their livelihood through gigs rather than a full-time job. The economic boom is on the verge while day-to-day new innovative companies are coming up with new ideas. Profitable and productive opportunities are available for people who are ready to embrace them. Media giants have dubbed this new form of economy as the ‘Gig Economy’. To the optimists, it is an opportunity to create boundless innovation and empowered entrepreneurship; whereas others think of it as a negative aspect that foreshadows an oppressed future of people rummaging around for their next piece of work. In the United States, this new form of economy has become so noticeable that the issue has already entered in early debates of the presidential race; One front runner, Jeb Bush, supporting the economy, whereas another, Hillary Clinton is a bit on the other side. In Gig Economy, the providers do not have to embrace themselves in the commitment for a full day of work. The set of boundaries between a personal and professional life is constantly vanishing. It certainly is inspiring the thought of ‘Being Your Own Boss”. Aiming forward with the correct mindset, you can achieve a better balance between work and life. There are various advantages of trying entrepreneurial ways with experimenting a few gigs. Perhaps the lowered barrier to entrepreneurship due to this form of economy will spur a new innovation.

America’s Romance with Gig Economy Few examples of companies having Gig Economy are Uber, Airbnb, Lyft, etc. The corporations that are embracing themselves in the on demand economy are termed as ‘Gig economy’. It forms a sharing economy and collective, collaborative consumption to restructure jobs into smaller diversified projects of limited time duration. Going gig will slash the lawsuit exposure that rose under Obama Administrations, which is the breadth of workers’ legal rights. This means that Gig workers will lack the bundles of new employee protection strategies that includes rights against false termination and discrimination, enhanced rights to form confederate, being paid for overtime, and freedom to take the required amount of family leaves. As the legal and financial costs of the workers have hiked, twenty-four hour digital connectivity has been progressing from the social domain to the workforce in the terms of interaction and transaction digitally. Almost all Americans and very soon most of the people on earth will have their own digital profiles stored in digital clouds and digital devices. These types of profiles

Whereas the “Third Annual Independent Workforce Report,” drafted last year by MBO Partners, a management services firm states that about fifty percent of the workforce in the United States will work as freelancers, small business owners, or contractors, by 2020. It is not just about the future of growth of jobs on contractual basis in the United States, but there lies a huge effort of transition to dump the tech employees who are American with contract workers from foreign on the economical H-1B visa.

Gig Economy for Entrepreneurs and Start-Ups

Gig Economy allows all kinds of startups for finding the perfect matches needed for outside help faster, at a chunk of the expense of hiring a marketing firm, which leads to quicker, efficient operation, stronger, and faster potential of growth. Rich Pearson, CMO Elance.com, states that: This economy isn’t a trend; it’s a new way of working. Startups are regularly tapping into specialized talent on demand, resulting in faster time to market and lower costs. We’re now seeing larger companies hiring teams of freelancers online, creating opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible earlier. By 2020, we believe 1 out of 3 person will be hired online.

Industry Leaders Magazine [September 2015]

South Africa doesn’t seem so far away when airfare to Johannesburg from Washington, D.C. or New York in the sweltering days of August drops down to under $1,000. The Rainbow Nation’s location in the southern hemisphere means bursting fern-wreathed spring and torpid summer, both are ideal seasons for a post-card worthy road trip and the South African safari. The primal pleasures of discovering the world at its most elemental never get old!

Getting to Luxury Safari Camp in Madikwe Game Reserve South Africa’s fifth largest game reserve, the Madikwe Game Reserve is spread across 187,800 acres of bush land in the north of the town of Groot-Marico up against the beautifully isolated and unspoilt border of Botswana. To get to Madikwe, you could either take a 40-minute private charter flight from J Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport to Madikwe Reserve’s airstrip, or a private helicopter which will fly down directly to one of its lodges’ helipad. The Madikwe Game Reserve that opened in 1991 and staged one of the biggest game relocation programme (8,000 animals so far) was named after the Madikwe or Groot Marico River (Groot Marico means Big-Marico), one of the few perennial rivers in this area. Herman Charles Bosman, South Africa’s best known writers, held Marico in high esteem, calling it “the authentic stamp of South Africa”.

Molelo Presidential Suite Molori Safari Lodge in Madwike is home to the Molelo Presidential Suite, and is widely known for its luxuruious game lodge and chandeliers that gives the spacious wooden structure its warm glow. The most peculiar of all, is the study and library area, filled with National Geographic magazines dating back to the 1940s, and, retractable floor-toceiling glass doors giving endless views of the reserve. Home to a thriving population of the Super Seven, including the Big Five as well as an abundance of cheetah and wild dog, you’ll see animals, plenty of animals. Wilderness Excapes Most national parks and game reserves act as a simulacra in which guests can experience the “authentic” Africa experience, but that is not the case with the Madikwe Reserve. For close encounters with nature, Molori Safari offers guided game walks as well as the adrenaline-charged tracking of lions and leopards on foot. You’ll see ostriches swaying from side to side in a froth of feathers, Hornbills strolling sedately in the grass, a helmetshrike’s call summoning the flock, a leopard walking headfirst down a tree trunk, cheetah giving a bark, hippopotamuses wallowing in the pond, floating over their pink bellies, lions doing a victory strut after bringing down a gazelle, or an epic fight between a buffalo and the lion. You can enjoy iconic African birds, such as the Kori Bustard, the Secretarybird, and the Lilac-Breasted Roller with the naked eye. You’ll find yourself one with getting up close and personal with nature. Covered in seemingly endless bush, the rugged hills and sparse plains of Madikwe Reserve may match a thousand corners of Africa, but it’s the exceptional guide that sets it apart. For those, who wants to go on a nocturnal adventure, Molori also offers night drive in the stretch of the road for the tracking of the Super Seven. The three-four hour game drives are led by a personal ranger and a tracker in a private safari jeep. Using hi-tech torches, you’ll peek into the nocturnal world of elephant, buffalo, leopard, wild dog, cheetah, lion and rhinoceros.

There are very few places in the world that feel as unspoilt as Madwike. The Groot Marico river floweing past the lush riverine plains, clouds of exotic and indigenous butterflies migrating to East Africa, a lion swimming across the waters in hunt of a buffalo, and the black sky made too bright with billions of glittering stars. For a true nature lover, experiences such as, watching an elephant in a well-designed zoo in San Diego, or a caging a weaver in the National Aviary in Pittsburg are merely a simulacrum, negating the essence of the nature. The grace and beauty in South Africa brought by flora and fauna is inexplicable, and no YouTube videos or wildlife photographs can give justice to the full scale of this spectacle. To experience Africa, one has to go to Africa, but well, with a pair of binoculars perched on the shoulders, not a rifle.

Smiling Reception To Entrepreneurs Across The Country White House Demo Day If anything, America’s tryst with entrepreneurialism continues to deepen while leading the global economy, as the debt clock ticks past $16 trillion.

A

merica has always been a beacon of entrepreneurship. In the late 1970s, it was the first country to shed managerial capitalism for an entrepreneurial legacy. Between 1970s and 2010, as the economic growth took a 180 into a slump, a legion of innovators, predominantly in the finance and computer industries, exposed the shortcomings of the old industrial corporation that worked together with big government to deliver a predictable economy, and launched a new wave of entrepreneurship. Today, its culture fosters entrepreneurship and risk-taking. Although U.S. ranks

12th among developed nations in terms of business activity, it has a record number of startup rates. According to the 2015 Kauffman Index, there are over half a million new business owners each month. If anything, America’s tryst with entrepreneurialism continues to deepen while leading the global economy, and as the debt clock ticks past $16 trillion. According to U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith, only 3 percent of venture capital-backed startups are run by women, and only 1 percent of those companies are led by African America. While, only 4 percent of U.S.-based venture capitalists are women. Industry Leaders Magazine [September 2015]

Undoubtedly, progress is underway. On august 4, 2015, President Barack Obama invited 90 entrepreneurs from over 30 companies to the White House to participate in the first-ever White House Demo Day. The purpose of the event was to promote diversity in the U.S. technology sector. In many ways, it seemed just like any other demo day, with founders clad in t-shirts or suits, sharing their unique stories, and hyping long-term opportunities underway. They talked about their degrees, where they got seed funding, and personal journeys that brought them to their businesses. Unlike a typical Silicon Valley Demo Day, where startup founders get up on stage and pitch to an audience jam-packed with press and potential investors, founders were giving their standard spiels – trials and triumphs, during the event, and pitching President Obama in the west wing of the White House. Luminaries, Megan Smith and Founder and CEO Daymond John had conversations with the founders, while the event was broadcasted live. Today, a slew of tech companies, like Airbnb, Amazon, Box and Google, as well as high-profile venture capital firms are announcing concrete plants to increase and foster diversity.

It seems tech leaders are finally getting serious about correcting the disparity. Obama’s Demo Day, which includes companies like Duolingo and PartPic, is intended to encourage entrepreneurship for all, and to foster inclusion in the tech sector, especially the largely underrepresented. These companies were selected because they, in some or the other way, represent diversity in entrepreneurship. As the President delivered his address, more than a dozen founders stood behind him. They included Privahini Bradoo, founder of BlueOak Resources, an e-waste recycling company, as well as Christopher Ategeka, a Ugandanborn founder of Privail, which makes rapid response HIV tests. A majority of the founders were either women, minorities or both, hand-picked and called to the While House to serve as examples of the valuable talent the tech community overlooks. In his speech, President Obama laid out the gravity of the diversity disparity situation. “It’s always hard to get in front of the right people,” the President said to a room full of entrepreneurs and industry leaders. “But sometimes it’s harder if you’re a woman or underrepresented

minority, who all too often have to fight just to get a seat at the table. “There’s never been a better time to launch an idea and bring it to scale right here in the United States right now. But we’ve got to make sure we take advantage of this moment by tapping all the talent America has to offer no matter who they are or where they set up shop.” “This is something we’re seeing again and again and again: We are not producing all the technical talent, and all the engineers that we need,” the President said, adding that that’s often because people from underrepresented groups in tech often don’t feel supported and leave the field before they’ve really begun. In not providing those support systems early, President Obama said, “We deprive ourselves of the talent we need.” The Obama administration has been keenly working with more than 40 VC firms (including Intel Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, A16Z, Andreessen Horowitz and Scale Venture Partners) and collectively added more than $100 billion. The inclusion of Kleiner Perkins is particularly noteworthy, given the highly publicized gender discrimination trial earlier this year.

President Obama, announced 116 new winners of the total Small Business Administration prize, expanding the InnovateHER Women’s Business Challenge by doubling the number the local competitions. It should be noted that winners from the 2014 Growth Accelerator Fund sustained or created more than 5,000 jobs and raised more than $500 million, committing to innovative hiring practices that foster opportunities for minorities. Small Business Administration’s goal is to identify services and products that have significant impacts on the lives of people using them, and the scope for commercialization. Microsoft will be doubling the prizes award, as a part of this expansion. The White House will soon expand severaltechnology focused government programs, including the TechHire initiative, to advance careers in tech for unemployed Americans through coding bootcamps and partnerships with major tech companies. The administration gained commitments from 100 engineering school deans to increase its recruiting and retention efforts among minority and female students.
