Bank Of America Accused Of Deluding Investors A civil lawsuit was filed against Bank of America for misleading investors in an $850 million mortgage-bond deal known as BOAMS 2008-A offered in 2008. According to the court filings, The Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission filed parallel civil suits in U.S. District Court in Charlotte. Attorney General Eric Holder said the government wanted ‘‘justice for those who have been victimized.’’ According to the complaint, Bank of America is charged of making misleading statements and failed to divulge important facts about the pool of mortgages underlying a securitization named BOAMS 2008-A. The investors also included the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and Wachovia Bank National Association. Out of the 1,191 mortgages in the securitization, more than 40 percent of them did not comply with the bank’s underwriting standards. ‘‘These misstatements and omissions concerned the quality and safety of the mortgages collateralizing the BOAMS 2008-A securitization, how it originated those mortgages and the likelihood that the ‘prime’ loans would perform as expected,’’ the Justice Department said in its statement.

LG Announces Launch of G2 Flagship Android Phone LG has made solid progress in the smartphone market. LG Mobile CEO Jong-Soek Park announced his company’s newest flagship smartphone G2 handset on Wednesday at a glitzy New York event at Lincoln Center. New flagship phone from LG comes with a unique design with volume and power controls on the back.By installing the buttons on the back and engineering the circuitry and electronics around that design choice, the phone’s bezel is only 0.1 inches thick. The LG G2 is the world’s first smartphone to be completely devoid of side buttons. Park describes it as ‘‘clean, with nothing on the sides to break the beautiful lines.’’ ‘‘Think about it-where is your index finger when you are talking on the phone?’’ Park said. ‘‘Relocating power and volume buttons to the back… changes the way we interact with the form. Simply everything is more convenient.’’ The LG G2’s high-resolution13-megapixel camera comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology in a slim design without a protruding lens to prevent blurring, allowing for clearer, brighter and sharper images even when in motion or shooting in dim environments. Elon Musk’s Hyperloop Could Be The Future of Inter-State Transportation Elon Musk, the chief executive officer of Tesla Motors Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., disclosed plans on Monday for a futuristic ‘‘Hyperloop’’ transportation system that could deliver passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 30 minutes. If it is ever built, it could revolutionize transportation and energy. According to Musk the Hyperloop would carry people from city to city via pods enclosed inside of tube. He describes the design as looking like a double-barrelled shotgun with the tubes running side-by-side for most of the journey and closing the loop at either end. These tubes would be mounted on columns 50 to 100 yards (45.7 to 91.4 meters) apart with the pods inside of them going as fast as 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) per hour-fast enough to move someone from Los Angeles to San Francisco- the busiest traffic corridor on the West Coast in 30 minutes. To reduce friction, the cars would levitate on a cushion of pressurized air. Solar panels would run along the top of tube to provide power, Musk writes, and excess energy would be stored in battery packs for operation at night and in cloudy weather. That means the hyperloop ‘‘can generate far in excess of the energy needed to operate.’’

Heineken profits drops as beer sales decline Heineken NV (HEIA), the world’s third-largest brewer delivered a dismal earnings report on Wednesday, saying its first half profit fell 17 percent because of bad weather, weak ‘‘consumer sentiment’’ in Europe and the United States, and sluggish growth in developing countries. The brewer said it expects no ‘‘material change to underlying trading conditions’’ across majority of its markets for the rest of the year, despite benefiting from better weather conditions in July in Western Europe and anticipated volume improvements in some developing markets. Chief executive Jean Francois van Boxmeer said on Wednesday the outlook for the second half is similar. The company witnessed a ‘‘further moderation versus what we had expected after the first quarter, ‘‘he said on a call with reporters. The second quarter was ‘‘clearly below’’ company expectations ‘‘and that will have an impact on total outlook for the year.’’ ‘‘Although the volume trends have improved in July with the warm summer weather in Europe, economic conditions in several of our core markets continue to constrain consumer spending,’’ he said in a statement.

Yahoo beats Google or Google beats Yahoo? What’s the real story? It is said that Yahoo finally managed to beat Google for the first time in visitor’s number. According to the latest numbers released on Monday by Internet analytics firm ComScore, Yahoo is the top US web property when it comes to the number of unique visitors in July, beating out long time rival Google. The jump in viewership assumedly comes from Yahoo’s slew of company acquisitions over the last year and the press it has received in the process. There has been a steady stream of acquisitions by Yahoo, the largest of which was Tumblr back in May. The new data released by Yahoo, without incorporating Tumblr’s figures, has revealed that the company has beaten Google to become the most visited website in the U.S. in July. However, Tumblr racked up about 38 million unique users, ranking at number 29. The last time Yahoo ranked so high was in March 2008, which is forever-ago in Internet terms. Microsoft, Facebook and AOL complete the top five of the most visited US websites. As per the latest report, this is the first time Yahoo has come over the search giant Google since April 2011.

No Privacy for Gmail users, claims Google! ‘‘Google has finally admitted they don’t respect privacy,’’ explained Consumer Watchdog’s privacy project director John Simpson in a statement. ‘‘People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents’ privacy don’t use Gmail.’’ The suit, filed in May, claims Google ‘‘unlawfully opens up, reads, and acquires the content of people’s private email messages.’’ It quotes Eric Schmidt, Google’s executive chairman: ‘‘Google policy is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.’’ ‘‘Unbeknown to millions of people, on a daily basis and for years, Google has systematically and intentionally crossed the ‘creepy line’ to read private email messages containing information you don’t want anyone to know, and to acquire, collect, or mine valuable information from that mail,’’ the suit claims. Google argues the terms of service and privacy policy of Gmail lays out their automated processes of scanning email-and by agreeing to use the service, users are bound to those terms. Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company’s reasoning shouldn’t come as a huge shock. He said the company is bound to the federal terms of the U.S. PATRIOT Act.

10 Qualities that make a Leader ‘‘

Leadership is a trait known to many, learnt by some and perfected by few.

]21]

‘‘

Industry Leaders Magazine | August 2013

Leader Talk There are leaders and managers and supervisors and bosses, among others, who take up the responsibilities of getting things done through others, rather than by others. Many attempt, some learn and a few succeed. Leadership is a trait that is not passed on or inherited, it has to be earned, and on a daily basis. The concept of leadership has been the basis for much research and a good amount of literature has been published about the same, highlighting and describing the dos and don’ts, traits of good leaders, characteristics of the best leaders, things that make good leaders and the things that make leaders good. In a world where every third person is a self-proclaimed expert on business and leadership, it is important to learn from the very best.

1

M. K. Gandhi

‘‘ I suppose leadership at one time meant muscles; but today it means getting along with people. ’’ There was a time when the strongest person from a group, clan or kingdom used to be their leader. In the present predominantly democratic society, a leader is selected by the people from the people and for the people. It is important for a leader to be ‘concordant’ and ‘approachable’ in order to facilitate an environment of growth and intellect. If an employee cannot approach the leader of the organization, he cannot put forth his demands, suggestions or ideas, thereby, hampering his creative genius and rendering him unsatisfied. A leader that can get along with his followers, listen and appreciate to their ideas and take care of their needs is the leader of the future.

]22]

Industry Leaders Magazine | August 2013

2

Peter F. Drucker

‘‘The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I’.’’

The most effective leaders in the world seldom use the word ‘I’, they say ‘we’. The best leaders always think in terms of a team and believe in ‘team work’. It is the job of every leader to make the team function and the ones that understand that start thinking along the same lines and are effective. These leaders accept the challenges and work towards making their team efficient; the leader faces the song but gives credit to the team. This creates trust in the team and enables the leader to get the task done.

3

Steve Jobs

‘‘Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.’’ Leadership and ‘‘innovation’’ have an intrinsic relationship. As the focus of bring about a better future, the relationship is inevitable. Innovation also means going out of the normal route to reach desired goals. A leader who is innovative and produces better results is respected and looked upon. Without innovation, a leader is a mere manager of a given situation. In a research conducted in 2008 (McKinsey research), it was found that more than 70% of the senior executives believed that innovation was going to be one of the three main drivers for growth in the following three years for their companies.

4

Jack Welch

‘‘Don’t manage - lead change before you have to.’’ Managing is not easy, but it is not the high-end of leading an organization. Managing a crisis is important, but if the leader has the ‘foresight’ to see the situation coming, he can easily make decisions beforehand that can avert the crisis and lead to innovative development. Foresight has the power and potential of transforming the business industry and it is important that a leader possess foresight if the organizations is to grow. In absence of foresight, the opportunity of getting to the finishing line first and establishing market supremacy is lost. For example, Rupert Murdoch’s foresight helped him to create market monopoly when it came to disseminating news and he went on to become one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the world and his company ‘News Corporation’, the second largest media conglomerate in the world.

5

Warren Buffet

‘‘I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars:I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.’’ It is important for a leader to ‘‘be realistic’’. Having momentum is necessary but not knowing when to stop can lead to a disaster. A leader should always know the limitations of the team he is leading and try to accomplish feats that are possible and within reach. Seven successful small feats are anytime better than one big feat, which may or may not be successful. World Com Inc., Enron Corp. and Bethlehem Steel are great examples of industry giants who failed to realize when to stop and ended up devastated and bankrupt.

Leader Talk

Donald J. Trump

‘‘Sometimes your best investments are the ones you do not make.’’ One of the main responsibilities of a good leader is to ‘make intelligent choices’ and exercise restraint while making investments. The global market keeps offering luring opportunities for investments and a leader should know when to invest and when to say ‘no’. While investments can be highly profitable, they can also be expensive and unprofitable leading to crunch situations.

7

Richard Branson

‘‘You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and by falling over.’’ ‘Learning from your mistakes’ is a general must-do for everyone, more so for the leaders. Everyone makes mistakes but the ones who learn from their mistakes move past them and become better with every fall. One who learns from an earlier mistake will never commit it again and reduce the chances of failure in the future.

]26]

8

Kahlil Gibran

‘‘ I have learned silence from the talkative, tolerance from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strangely, I am ungrateful to these teachers. ’’ Learning doesn’t have to be limited to one’s own mistakes and good examples set by others, one can also ‘‘learn from the mistakes committed by others’’ and bad examples set by them. In a c o m p e t i t i v e market, it is very important to keep a track of one’s rivals, how they perform, what they do and the outcome of their actions. One doesn’t necessarily have to follow their footsteps and do whatever turned out to be good for them, but when it comes to mistakes they make, one has to note them down on the ‘things to avoid’ notice board.

9

Leader Talk

‘‘ As a leader, I am tough on myself and I raise the standard for everybody; however, I am very caring because I want people to excel at what they are doing so that they can aspire to be me. ’’ A leader should be a ‘‘role-model’’ for the followers. This can be possible only if the leader sets high standards that need hard-work to be matched. This not only makes the leader respectable among his followers but also motivates the followers to work harder towards achieving higher standards of work.

10

Ralph Nader

‘‘ I start with the premise that the function of a leader is to produce more leaders, not more followers. ’’ One of the best characteristics of a modern leader is that he creates leaders from his followers. ‘‘Creating leaders’’ is not easy and it takes a long time to identify potential in the team member and nurturing it in a positive direction. Assigning tasks and duties to the team member and putting some of them in charge of particular tasks makes them self-reliant and develops their leadership qualities. So, by the time the top level leaders of an organization, such as, CEOs and Directors, retire, they leave behind a legacy and new leaders.

In a news release, Microsoft and Nokia said 32,000 Nokia employees will join Microsoft as a result of the all-cash deal. Stephen Elop, the chief executive of Nokia and a former Microsoft executive, will rejoin Microsoft, setting him up as a potential successor for Steve Ballmer, who has said he will retire as chief executive of Microsoft within 12 months after a successor is found. ‘‘Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft’s share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services,’’ Ballmer said in a statement. ‘‘In addition to their innovation and strength in phones at all price points, Nokia brings proven capability and talent in critical areas such as hardware design and engineering, supply chain and manufacturing management, and hardware sales, marketing and distribution.’’ Industry Leaders Magazine | August 2013

okia was once a leader in mobile phones, but the firm’s sales fell 24% in the three months to the end of June from a year earlier. It sold 53.7 million mobile phones during the quarter, down 27% on last year. However, sales of its new Lumia phones, which run a Microsoft operating system, rose during the period. The sale of Nokia’s phone business marks the exit of a 150-year-old company that once dominated the global cellphone market and remains one of Europe’s premier technology brands. Nokia has struggled against competition from

Samsung and Apple. Samsung and Apple divvy up nearly all of the profits in the global smartphone business now. ‘‘For a lot of us Finns, including myself, Nokia phones are part of what we grew up with. Many first reactions to the deal will be emotional,’’ said Alexander Stubb, Finland’s minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade, on his Twitter account. Nokia said that once the sale is completed, it will concentrate on three key businesses network equipment manufacturing, mapping and location services, and the development and licensing of technology.

While Microsoft still has colossal stockpiles of cash from its lucrative software business, there has been widespread contemplation about how long Nokia could make it as an independent company, given how the spoils of the industry have gravitated to companies like Apple and Samsung. In a statement, Risto Siilasmaa, chairman of Nokia’s board and Nokia’s interim chief executive, said, ‘‘The deal offers future opportunities for many Nokia employees as part of a company with the strategy, financial resources and determination to succeed in the mobile space.’’ The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2014, subject to approval by Nokia shareholders, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Mergers & More

A

team within Nokia had Android up and running on the company’s Lumia handsets well before Microsoft and Nokia began negotiating Microsoft’s $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia’s mobile phone and services business, according to two people briefed on the effort who declined to be identified because the project was confidential. Microsoft executives were aware of the existence of the project, these people said. Another person said the idea of Nokia using Android wasn’t a part of Microsoft’s discussions with the company about an acquisition, even though that was widely recognized as a possibility.

On one level, Nokia’s Android effort is not shocking. Companies often have ‘‘plan Bs’’ in the works in case they need to change course on strategy or want to help negotiate better terms with partners. Getting Android to run on Nokia’s hardware was not a Herculean engineering effort, according to the people familiar with the project. Still, a functioning Nokia Android phone could have served as a powerful prop in Nokia’s dealings with Microsoft, a tangible reminder that Nokia could move away from Microsoft’s Windows Phone software and use the Android operating system, which powers more than three out of every four smartphones sold globally.

Nokia choose Windows in 2011 ]49]

Nokia reached a deal with Microsoft in 2011 to use Windows Phone on its smartphones, but Nokia had an option to exit that partnership at the end of 2014. Unraveling that deal would have been painful for both parties. It would have been devastating to Microsoft’s mobile phone efforts since Nokia accounts for more than 80 percent of the Windows Phone handsets sold. For Nokia, changing such an important ingredient in its products would have been a costly setback too. Nokia has faced criticism that it made the wrong decision in choosing Windows Phone over Android several years ago. Nokia’s share of the smartphone market fell to 3 percent during the first half of 2013, from 32.8 percent in 2010. Industry Leaders Magazine | August 2013

Mergers & More There is no telling for sure whether Nokia would have been better off with Android over that time. It is possible the design of the operating system and greater abundance of Android apps might have put Nokia in a better spot.

]50]

The current status of Nokia’s Android project is unclear. Presumably, after Microsoft completes its acquisition of Nokia’s phone business early next year, there won’t be much future for it.

Testing Lumia Android ]51]

Before the sale to Microsoft, Nokia engineers had allegedly developed Lumia phones running Google’s Android operating system. The New York Times, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, claimed on Friday that a team within Nokia had Android-powered Lumia handsets "up and running" long before Microsoft bought Nokia’s mobile phone and services business for $7.2 billion. Microsoft apparently knew about the Android handsets, though they didn’t become a part of discussions when the companies negotiated. However, some could find that hard to believe, as Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS had relied on a hardware manufacturing partnership with Nokia since 2011. Industry Leaders Magazine | August 2013

Mergers & More Nokia had originally sided with Windows Phone over Android because, as former CEO Steven Elop once pointed out, there was a "very high risk" that one hardware manufacturer could dominate Android. That one manufacturer was Samsung - which now spearheads Android (to the point where even Google is

]52]

concerned). The report doesn’t specify whether Nokia wanted to jump the Windows Phone OS ship in favour of Android, nor how many handsets were actually made with the legitimate idea of release, but it’s interesting that the handsets even came to fruition internally.

But the Chilean capital, Santiago, is looking to do just that by encouraging travelers passing through on business to stay and uncover its potential as a hip South American destination. Chile has become one of the continent’s leading locations in which to do business in recent years. ]54]

Foreign investment increased by 80 percent in 2011 alone, totaling $12 billion for the year according to Daniel Pardo, director of SERNATUR, the Chilean tourism ministry. As a result, the number of foreigners coming into the country for trade purposes has increased along a similarly sharp upward curve. This surge has been concentrated mainly in Santiago, Chile’s nerve center and economic engine room, and it’s here that Pardo and the country’s tourist board spy an as yet untapped opportunity. ‘‘Hopefully by bringing out those

business people that are coming here for a week to do their jobs (they will) stay for the weekend and enjoy the country,’’ is the typical mindset of the businesses out there. ‘‘There’s a lot of interest in coming to Chile,’’ he adds. ‘‘And we’ve seen it in our numbers, with a 60 percent growth in tourism this year.’’ Travelers who take up the invitation to hang around will find a variety of parks, churches and museums which offer a wealth of easily accessible tourist sites -- ideal for the culture vulture with a couple of hours to spare. The Cityscape Santiago offers an intriguing mix of both the modern and the classic. Historic sites such as the Catedral Metropolitana contrast sharply against the rowdy Mercado Central fish market, which offers ‘‘a colorful attraction for photographers and foodies alike,’’ says Gleeson. Touring the city’s downtown district on foot is a particularly nice way to explore Santiago, she adds, while the nearby Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda museum plays host to the finest Chilean modern art. Other Santiago highlights include Museo de la Moda (Museum of Fashion) in the Vitacura district -- which includes famed items such as John Lennon’s jacket and

the famous ‘‘cone bra’’ Jean Paul Gaultier designed for Madonna -- and the 300 meter high San Cristobal lookout point. Seeking Alpha called it the ‘‘emerging market that will outperform the indexes of the developed world and possibly some of the BRIC countries.’’ The recent mining collapse made headlines for six months. But despite the press furore, the copper industry, combined with what is now a democratic liberal government, have made the country a thriving and attractive destination. A slightly anomalous Chilean tradition is the ‘coffee with legs’, (café con piernas), where women in short skirts serve drinks to male professionals of all ages. In this age of equality, though, there are even some targeted at women, who meet up with friends to join in the frolicsome atmosphere. If you want something stronger, the national aperitif is the pisco sour, a potent cocktail made mixing pisco spirit with sugar, lime juice and egg white. Or you could knock your socks off with the ‘terremoto’ (‘earthquake’), a refreshing combination of sweet white wine served with pineapple sorbet. Those seeking a guided alcoholic education should contact Santiago Adventures, who arrange one-day wine-tasting trips to the Corcoran Gallery and M&S suppliers, the Casas del Bosque. For nightlife, the Bar El Atico is

]65]

popular for those seeking a Britpop fix, as it eschews reggae and South American pop for western indie angst like Radiohead and the Pixies. For those who like to shake their hips, take a dance class at David and Yasna’s Dance Academy. Or you could head to Barrio Lastarria, which has a wide range of bars as well as a cinema and theatre. Watch out for the elusive man in a skirt and headscarf who sells doll heads from a blanket. Santiago is very informal and most businessmen have done away with jackets and ties but it’s always a good idea to find out how the people you are meeting will be dressed before you travel. Santiago’s air is very polluted, especially in winter. Traffic can sometimes be a problem but this is true of many capitals around the world.

Tesla posted profits for the first time during the first quarter of 2013 on NASDAQ. Tesla currently employs almost 3,000 full-time employees and is recruiting employees for positions in the headquarters in Palo Alto, California, at its European headquarters in Maidenhead, UK, and at an increasing number of sales facilities throughout North America and Europe. Tesla also markets electric powertrain components, including lithium-ion battery packs, to other automakers, including Daimler and Toyota. The Roadster The Tesla Roadster, the company’s first vehicle, is the first production automobile to use lithium-ion battery cells and the first production EV with a range greater than 200 miles (320 km) per charge. The Sport model accelerates 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.7 seconds and, according to Tesla Motor’s environmental analysis, is twice as energy efficient as the Toyota Prius. Tesla Motors gained widespread attention by producing the Tesla Roadster, the first fully electric sports car, followed by the Model S, a fully electric luxury sedan. Since 2008 Tesla has sold more than 2,250 Roadsters in 31 countries through March 2012. Tesla began producing right-hand-drive Roadsters in early 2010 for the UK and Ireland markets, and then expanded sales to right-hand-drive markets of Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. Tesla stopped taking orders for the Roadster in the U.S. market in August 2011. Prototypes were introduced to the public in July 2006, and the Tesla Roadster was featured on the cover of Time in December 2006 as the recipient of the magazine’s "Best Inventions 2006-Transportation Invention" award. The first "Signature One Hundred" set of fully equipped Roadsters sold out in less than three weeks, the second hundred sold out by October 2007, and general production began on March 17, 2008.

The WOW QUOTIENT

The Tesla way One of Tesla’s stated goals is to increase the number and variety of EVs available to mainstream consumers in three ways by selling its own vehicles in a growing number of company-owned showrooms and online, selling patented electric powertrain components to other automakers so that they may get their own EVs to customers sooner, serving as a catalyst and positive example to other automakers, demonstrating that there is pent-up consumer demand for vehicles that are both high-performance and efficient. General Motors’ then-Vice Chairman Robert Lutz said in 2007 that the Tesla Roadster inspired him to push GM to develop the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid sedan that aims to reverse years of dwindling market share and massive financial losses for America’s largest automaker. In an August 2009 edition of The New Yorker, Lutz was quoted as saying, "All the geniuses here at General Motors kept saying lithium-ion technology is 10 years away, and Toyota agreed with us -- and boom, along comes Tesla. So I said, ‘How come some tiny little California startup, run by guys who know nothing about the car business, can do this, and we can’t?’ That was the crowbar that helped break up the log jam." But in contrast to the resulting GM vehicle electrification strategy, Tesla focuses on pure battery electric propulsion technology, even for larger vehicle segments and real-world ranges greater than 200 miles. Musk won the 2010 Automotive Executive of the Year Innovator Award for hastening the development of electric vehicles throughout the global automotive industry.

The WOW QUOTIENT

Affordability The Tesla Roadster has a base price of US$109,000, €84,000 or GB£86,950 (not including numerous tax incentives, credits and waivers). Tesla’s goal is to sell EVs to mainstream consumers at more affordable prices-but Tesla purposely aimed its first production vehicle at ‘‘early adopters’’ so that the company could optimize the technology before cascading it down to less expensive vehicles. The company’s subsequent car, the Model S sedan, began production for the 2012 model year with a base price of US$57,400 (or US$49,900 after a US federal tax credit), roughly half that of the Roadster. The company then plans to launch a US$30,000 vehicle, codenamed BlueStar. Tesla also builds electric powertrain components for more affordable cars including the lowest priced car from Daimler, the Smart urban commuter car; the lowest priced car to carry the Mercedes badge, the A-Class hatch back; and the lowest priced SUV from Toyota, the RAV4. Aiming premium products at affluent ‘‘thought leaders’’ is a well known business strategy in Silicon Valley and the global technology industry, where prices for the first versions of cellular phones, laptop computers and flat-screen televisions start high but drop in subsequent product cycles. However, this approach has been relatively rare in the global auto industry, where the prevailing business model has been one of mass production in assembly plants optimized to build hundreds of thousands of vehicles per year with comparatively low sticker prices. According to a blog post by Musk, ‘‘New technology in any field takes a few versions to optimize before reaching the mass market and in this case it is competing with 150 years and trillions of dollars spent on gasoline cars.’’ Tesla also offers certified pre-owned cars with a 37 month, 37,000 miles (60,000 km), extended warranty. This warranty has the same coverage, including the battery, as the original warranty.

Tesla Headquarters and manufacturing unit Tesla announced in August 2009 that it planned to move its corporate headquarters and build a powertrain development facility at 3500 Deer Creek Road, in the Stanford Research Park in Palo Alto, California. Tesla said it would finance the project in part through US$100 million of the federal low-interest loans. The new facility would occupy 369,000 sq ft on a 23-acre parcel previously occupied by Agilent Technologies. Tesla completed the headquarters move in February 2010. The powertrain facility will produce electric vehicle components for Tesla and for other automakers, including Germany’s Daimler, which is using Tesla’s battery packs and chargers for an upcoming electric version of its Smart city car. About 350 employees are expected to be based at the Stanford site initially, potentially increasing to 650. Stanford Research Park is also home to Facebook, Hewlett Packard, Xerox PARC and other Silicon Valley companies. Using US$365 million in federal low-interest loans, Tesla had planned to build a Model S assembly plant in California with a fully ramped-up annual output of 20,000 sedans. Tesla did not announce a specific location, though unconfirmed media reports had focused on Southern California. In mid-2009, many speculative media reports suggested that Tesla could occupy the NUMMI assembly plant in Fremont, CA, which General Motors and Toyota had signaled they planned to vacate. Tesla stated it would develop a Brownfield site on existing industrial property-a preference of the federal government in approving candidates for interest-bearing loans from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.
