Today’s world seems to be running like crazy towards urbanization and industrial growth. This month’s focus is our cover story which describes the flip side of urbanization resulting in the danger of collapse of an economy. China being the biggest example is facing a threat to feed itself by this rapid industrial growth due to conversion of its agricultural land into industrial zones. The land base for agricultural production has been shrinking at a steady pace. Our Better Business destination this month is Shanghai. This city can be really termed as a Future City in a true sense. Though its remarkable the way our Senior writer has quoted, “Doing business in Shanghai, at least on the formal level, requires considerable patience and persistence. “ The Gold rush article is very informative and interesting. Even though the government will try to sweeten the possibility of a window with view of wind turbines with money, residents might be not in favor of wind farms as these facilities often roil outstanding landscapes and disrupt peaceful lives.
Bringing positive revolution?
On the 6th of June, the UK government is to officially announce new planning guidance which will certainly bring revolutionary changes in the segment of wind farms. It may come as no surprise that analysts cannot agree whether these changes will have positive or negative effects on this segment of renewable energy sector. The fact is that the UK government has already noticed an alarming trend in the wind farm segment as licenses for these facilities in England have slumped significantly, adding to signs that the end of onshore wind farms is slowly knocking at the door.

It is nothing new that Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. have been at war with each other for infringing technology patents held by the respective companies, so simply the story, which is full of twists in the plot, continues. Considering that Samsung Electronics Co. provides the processors used in Apple’s products, the patent wars are long-drawn and involve a lot of subtle contesting. Among the several patent-suits pending before courts in more than 10 countries, a ruling on patent No. 7,706348 by the US International Trade Commission on June 4th has gone in favor of Samsung Electronics Co. While this is a ‘limited exclusion order,’ it does prohibit the sale of CDMA technology based Apple products: iPhone 4, iPhone 3GX, iPhone 3, iPad 3G as well as iPad 2 3G as they infringe patents owned by the South Korean electronics giant. Increasingly, Apple Inc. has a limited number of choices these days. Some underlined that its only chance is to appeal to the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the highest patent court in the country.

Depressing picture of China’s manufacturing sector
On the 3rd of June, HSBC Holdings Plc issued its final reading for China’ factory output for May, showing that the gauge slumped to 49.2, compared to 50.4 recorded in April. The May’s reading has been the slowest since October 2012 as domestic and foreign demand dropped significantly. In addition, the reading was also vaguely lower than the May’s flash PMI for May standing at 49.6. Both HSBC figures, however, presented a picture of a contraction in the sector. Interestingly, the official PMI, which was released on the 1st of June, presented a more optimistic picture of the China’s economy and its factory output.
Disappointing China’s factory output for May bolster fears over country’s growth
The newest findings showed that China’s factory output contracted in May, strengthening concerns over world’s second economy growth. The contraction, which was driven by anemic export orders and weak domestic demand, indicated that China was losing its stem in the second quarter of the year. But what is interesting is the fact that HSBC data showed a more pessimistic picture of the China’s economy as official figures indicated that manufacturing rose in May.

Christine Day To Step Down
Canadian sportswear retailer Lululemon Athletica – CEO, Christine Day is stepping down after the recent problems with a line of yoga pants that were inconsiderately see through. The Vancouver based apparel company was founded by entrepreneur Chip Wilson in 1998 has customers for its pricey yoga and running gear who involve themselves in the company‘s free yoga classes and other events. But the company suffered a setback in March and had to apparently recall 17 percent of its popular Luon black yoga pants after reports that the pants were too revealing. It was an image hit which also hindered the first quarter earnings. Day took over as the CEO in January 2008 after a long run at Starbucks, where she held a post at their Asia Pacific group. In a statement, Day said that her leaving was a personal decision and ‘It is the right time to bring in a new CEO’. She also said ‘Plans have been laid for the next five years and a vision set for the next ten’. The company said Day would step down from her role after a successor is named.

PRISM Whistleblower Edward Snowden puts Obama & Tech Companies on the defensive As news of the US government premier security agency National Security Agency (NSA) broke, public criticism and resentment against Obama Administration has become more vocal across platforms. Public outrage against the privacy intrusion by Obama Administration has compelled the President, Barack Obama, to defend the surveillance program that was leaked by a government contractor, turned whistleblower Edward Snowden. Snowden had apparently leaked the government directive to technology companies seeking quarterly updates of user database. ’PRISM’ is the acronym for a government program that allows NSA ‘warrantless’ opportunity for surveillance of citizens to gain intelligence on ‘terrorist-activities.’ The program has given the agency free run to seek records of private citizens’ activities across media: internet, social networking sites, and phone calls from – carriers and service providers. Typically, Google, Verizon and Apple, announce on a regular basis the government requests placed for data. However, none of these reports have included the type of requests made by NSA, in continuation of the agency’s policy that such requests cannot be placed on public domain. £6bn Chinese Asian Business Gateway at
Royal Albert Dock
Touted as one of the largest investment to be made by ABP China Holding Group, the new business gateway, which is to be developed on 35-acres of Royal Albert Docks by the company, will be the ‘third largest financial district in the capital.’ A news byte by Greater London Authority discusses the project and underlines that the venture would generate £23 million in business annually. The chairman of ABP China Holding Group, Xi Weiping, has underlined that the vision of his company is to build a world-class facility in Greater London Authority area that will initially address the business needs of Asian investors/companies/businesses as London is considered to be the gateway to Europe. In addition, the Chairman has been also happy to note that the phased investment by his company will lead to sustained development in the Dockland area and promote job opportunities, not to mention that it will be responsible for bringing fresh economic activity in the region. According to Greater London Authority, the ABP’s venture would develop nearly 20,000 jobs and breach business income of £23 million in the region.

Though the title is usually applied to marriage, analyse the above example and one will see that the term means going the whole way, making everything possible and yet somehow holding on, in the basic sense of the phrase. The point is; a true leader has to on all accounts and every condition, multi task. The idea is very simple; a true leader knows that she or he will be depended upon, asked to learn errands, listen to some swear words, make everyone work, motivate those around and at no point of time should she or he lose her or his temper or smile. Many scenarios are seen almost every minute in one’s workstation or personal lives. In fact, to start with a differential, everybody has at one point of time done some sort of group work or the other. It could be anything; from organising the school prom to hosting a cheerleading contest. In the light of such an event, ever noticed that guy who works around with a clipboard, taking a drag from a cigarette, laughing around with the ladies, speaking to the authority and yet remaining cheerful the whole time? Or that girl who goes around asking people to cough up money for the event, arranging the score board, checking the stage, pushing people around to work, doing a jig herself when she feels like and yet smiles the whole time and is pretty much

liked by everybody around? If one has seen such a person, you should be congratulated to have found a true leader in all the mess. The job of a leader is a tough one. To make things even more worse, there will without fail always be something that has to go wrong. A leader should know what to do and how well to camouflage the crisis or crises that occurs. In addition, a leader has to remember that at any point of time, those working under or rather with her or him will turn around and be crabby. It happens all the time. For example, let us start with Wendy who is a wedding planner and to quote some client of hers a ‘thumping good one at that.’ Now anyone who thinks that her job is any less important or demands any less effort than others demand, wait until the end of it. Wendy has a new client who is one of those fussy sorts. Now, on the day of the wedding, here is a series of incidents, which went wrong; the client’s dress was found to be exchanged with another’s. The cake, which was supposed to be delivered by the bakery at nine, was still yet to arrive at 12. The groom was playing with his nephew who chose precisely that moment to puke on him. The best man, who is also gay, is in love with the groom, ends up getting drunk at 10 in the morning, and forgets the speech he prepared for his toast. Industry Leaders Magazine | July 2013

The laptop you bought last week, works fine usually, but is refusing to do so right then. The seating arrangement is all wrong. The person beneath you suddenly called sick and the secretary hired is no good. Analyze that.

Moving on with it
Another point that a true leader is well aware of and should remember is that; always keep a backup plan. It is very important to have a contingency plan to implement when it looks like the plan previously made is hitting the floor instead of the roof. One should also remember that those working with you are in fact not beneath you. They are in fact the ones who are in a way obliging you with their service. Stop thinking that money will always do the trick, because it will not. There are certain qualities that actually help identify the true value of a leader. However, a more important focus that one should make at all costs is to remember that diamonds are not, in fact, forever. One might be a great leader and should truly be proud about it. Nevertheless, one should also make sure that there is a second person who is equally adept and with fine-tuning, shall be better. Following are some tips, which should help one in knowing

what to look for while thinking of choosing the other person or in a way, that back up person.
Quick Mettle
As happens in most cases, true leader start showing the signs early. Even in the team you work with, you should keep an eye open for the person who shows quickness and poise while doing a job. This person should usually be the one who takes care of problems when they arise and sometimes does the best to keep them at bay.
Skills of an Orator A good leader is one who can motivate well. In addition, how does one motivate another person? Simple; she or he talks. One should in fact keep an eye out for those who have a rather unconventional way of talking and thereby motivating the others to work, because they tend to work the best. In addition, one should look for people who do have a certain way with certain people.

Meeting Deadlines
A job well done is best recognized when it is done within time. Keep setting tasks to your team and screen those who have a knack of making submissions within time. Everybody today is always hard pressed for time. Therefore, one should be very particular to choose people who do not have time management issues and is pretty much on the toes to make it within the stipulated time.
Solution With All
There was a purpose behind mentioning a not so irregular day in Wendy’s life. Like it has been mentioned before, nobody is super human and anybody who pretends otherwise should stop kidding themselves and others. Had Wendy not had a better rapport with the bakery, the cake might not have been there. Also, the gay best man would never have given a great speech, dictated entirely by Wendy the couple would have had quite a bone to pick with him later or even right there maybe. The point is; along with doing some very quick thinking, one should remember that one has to work with others as a team in order to derive the needed results. Watch out for those who work well under pressure and with the other fellows well and make a decision.

A fully Solar powered airplane landed in Washington on Sunday after a flight from St. Louis heading towards the end of its journey across the United States in an attempt to promote clean energy technologies. The ‘Solar Impulse’ started is journey on 15th June and flew for more than 14 hours with a commitment to take an important step in achieving a world of clean technology. Solar impulse landed at the Dulles International Airport near Washington a little later than midnight. The last spell of the trip is to begin in July and the Solar impulse is to fly to New York from Washington. With the completion of this journey, this aircraft will be one of its kind to complete a day and night journey across the US. One of its kind being the first solar-powered aircraft. Solar Impulse has a wingspan almost equal to a jumbo jet and weighs like a small car. By 2015, they are determined to build an advanced solar aircraft which would be capable to fly around the world, though it has already achieved a landmark of flying intercontinental from Spain to Morocco in June last year.
SOLAR IMPULSE HB-SIB Lessons learned from this prototype are incorporated in the second airplane, to be registered as HB-SIB, construction of which was started in 2011. Its more spacious cockpit will enable the pilot to fully recline during flights lasting from 4 to 6 days; it will have an increased payload; its electrical circuitry will be isolated to enable flights in rain; and system redundancy will improve reliability. Whereas the prototype used existing technologies, Solar Impulse HB-SIB requires the development of new materials and new construction methods. Solvay has invented electrolytes that allow the energy density of the batteries to be increased; Bayer Material Sciences is allowing the project to make use of its nanotechnologies; and Décision is using carbon fibers that are lighter in weight than any previously seen. The first longeron section was delivered to Dübendorf in March 2012, and assembly of the wing will start in late summer. The aircraft will undergo the same structural strength and vibration testing as for HB-SIA. Flight testing is planned for spring 2014, and the round-the-world flight for between April and July 2015.
The Ambitious Project This 10 year project began in 2003 with a budget of $112 million. Engineers from Swiss escalator maker Schindler and research aid from Belgian chemicals group Solvay have been involved actively in this ambitious project. Though Solar Impulse may not be the first solar airplane ever designed, but it is certainly the most ambitious one. None of its predecessors has ever managed to fly through the night that too with a pilot on board. Swiss pilot Bertrand Piccard said in the statement, “It proves the reliability and potential of clean technologies, and this is crucial in pushing our message forward.” Piccard founded the Solar Impulse project with fellow pilot Andre Borschberg. According to the Solar Impulse description, the gigantic dimensions of this ultra lightweight revolutionary aircraft capable of flying day and night without fuel are its trademark characteristics. To build it, the whole team has had to push back the frontiers of knowledge in materials science, energy management and the man-machine interface. Each of its take-offs, propelled silently by its four electric motors and inspires us to consider using clean, new technologies to free our society, little by little, from dependence on fossil energy. The upper part of the solar airplane’s wings is covered by solar panels. These are solar generators, meaning that they convert sunrays directly into electricity. The panels together are constituted of a total of 12’000 solar cells which, in turn, are all grouped into “strings” of 300 cells. At the extremities of each string, just like in a battery, there is the positive (+) and negative (-) pole. Each string has what’s called a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) which is responsible for extracting the maximum amount of power from the panels at any given solar intensity. The energy is then either stored in the batteries (there are 4 total) or immediately converted into mechanical energy, triggering the propellers to move. There are 4 motors on the Solar impulse. The plane’s first leg of the journey from San Francisco to Phoenix was completed in early May and later that month it flew from Phoenix to Dallas. In June, the Solar Impulse flew from Dallas to St. Louis and made a trip to Washington in almost 30 hours of flying over two days. It transformed the 20th Century, and set whole generations dreaming. way forward. The aim of Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg is not to revolutionize the aviation industry –it would be stupid and pretentious to even attempt this – but instead to use the power of this airborne symbol to help change people’s minds about renewable energies. In the present context, people are put off by the sheer scale of the problems. Instead, they should be encouraged, because technological solutions exist that can create jobs and open new markets whilst also protecting the environment. Aviation, for its part, must clearly change to survive, given the constant rise in the price of kerosene and CO2 taxes. But it is obvious that, unlike Solar Impulse, airliners’ engines are not about to start functioning without fuel. The solar airplane simply demonstrates that “less can mean more”. Solar Impulse has started to fulfill the good-citizenship role for which it was designed. The solar airplane provokes discussions amongst the highest political and economic authorities about technological solutions currently available to help them achieve the world’s agreed CO2 reduction targets. And it also allows them to tackle the problem of resistance to change, which risks locking us for too long into the dangerous and costly consequences of old habits. It is with the aim of promoting such processes of change that Europe is using Solar Impulse, to give an example of what clean technology is capable of achieving. Here is a top ten list of the countries holding the most gold as reserve. Note: CBGA refers to the Central Bank Gold Agreements. The first Agreement (CBGA 1) ran from September 27, 1999 to September 26, 2004.The second Agreement (CBGA 2) ran from September 27, 2004 to September 26, 2009. United States
United States – Officially the United States has the largest gold holdings in the world with 8,133.5 tonnes, equivalent to 75.1 percent of its foreign reserves. It has around 3,000 tonnes in reserve. It is said that most of the official gold reserves might be located in the Fort Knox vault, which was expressly built before the Second World War. It accumulated the gold bought for $20.00 per troy ounce from individuals and companies all across the US according to a decree issued by President Franklin Roosevelt. Most of the gold came from the banks comprising the Federal Reserve System (FRS) and they received the so-called gold certificates, which in turn were declared in their balance sheets. Some call this a coercive buyout of metal but was actually a confiscation of gold. Upon completion of the operation the price of gold was revised at $35.00.

Germany The largest economy in the Eurozone’s official gold holdings account for 3,391.3 tonnes, which are valued at about $125.01 billion, equivalent to 72.1 percent of its foreign reserves. Under CBGA 1 and 2 Germany sold gold for the purpose of minting commemorative gold coins. In the first year of CBGA 3 it sold approximately 6 tonnes and since September 2011 it has sold about 4.7 tonnes of gold. Of late there haven’t been any changes in Germany’s gold holding. Germany’s gold reserves are massive, second only to those of the United States in their quantity. They total some 3,400 tons, much of it acquired during the so-called “economic miracle,” when Germany was rebuilding after the Second World War. Around a third of the country’s reserves are in Frankfurt, while the rest is deposited in France, Great Britain and the United States. But the German Central Bank, under pressure from the public, wants to start bringing much of those reserves back home.

Italy At number three the official gold holdings account for 2,451.8 tonnes which are worth approximately around $89.92 billion, equivalent to 72.2 percent of its foreign reserves. It sold no gold under CBGA 1 or 2 and also announced that it will not sell gold under the CBGA 3 too. A SMALL majority of Italians would favor using the country’s gold bullion reserves to ease the national debt burden, according to a new report from the World Gold Council, the market development organization for the gold market.

France The French National Bank is home to the country’s gold holdings which have been reported at 2,435.4 tonnes, equivalent to 69.2 percent of its foreign reserves. Under CBGA 2 France sold 572 tonnes of gold. In 2004 France transferred about 17 tonnes of gold to the bank for International Settlements as part purchase of BIS shares. Under CBGA 3 there will be no sale of gold reserves. After World War II, the Bretton Woods Agreement established a standard that pegged the dollar at the gold exchange rate of $35 (USD) per ounce. Subsequently, President Charles de Gaulle reduced French dollar reserves by exchanging them for gold from Fort Knox. As a result of this action and other economic considerations, President Richard Nixon ended the convertibility of dollars to gold in 1971.

China The world’s most populous country has the world’s fifth largest gold reserve. China’s official gold holding account for 1,054.1 tonnes and the percent of foreign reserves in gold is 1.7 percent. The country still has around 1,900 tonnes in reserves. It has already mined a total of 249.7 tonnes in the second quarter of 2012 as against 355 tonnes in 2011, which reflects a 10 percent increase from the same period last year. It still holds a very small percent of China’s $3.2 trillion in foreign exchange reserves as compared with the international average of 10 percent. It is believed that China’s current gold reserves are significantly more than the stated 1,054 tonnes. Given that the entirety of China’s domestic gold production remains held in-country, the escalating level of gold imports through Hong Kong (which have totalled a cumulative 1,051 tonnes since 2010), and the sheer size of China’s US dollar reserves, it seems highly probable that a large portion of that gold is making its way to the PBOC. The fact that Chinese officials seek to deny this should not be surprising, as any suggestion to the contrary has the strong potential of moving the gold price higher.

Switzerland In the sixth place Switzerland’s gold holdings account for 1,040.1 tonnes, equivalent to 10.0 percent of its foreign reserves. In 1997 the World Gold Council announced that a part of Switzerland’s gold reserves will be sold because they were no longer considered to be essential for monetary policy purposes. In May 2000 the country sold about 1,300 tonnes as it was considered to be surplus. 1,170 tonnes were sold under CBGA 1 and 130 tonnes were sold under CBGA 2. Since the Second World War and the Cold War, several central banks in Europe have kept part of their gold reserves in foreign countries in case of land invasions. But the turmoil in financial markets in recent years has raised some concern among Europeans about their country’s financial safety nets. Some see gold as a reliable store of value that a country can depend upon in case of serious market turmoil.

Russia Since 2006 Russia has been trying to build its own gold reserves in order to expand the Forex reserves. The country has already bought 57.6 tonnes to increase its reserves to 976.9 tonnes, equivalent to 9.6 percent of its foreign reserves. Japan Managed by the Bank of Japan, it is the eighth largest gold owner in the world with official gold holdings of 765.2 tonnes, equivalent to 3.2 percent of its foreign reserves. In 1950 Japan’s gold reserves were just about 6 tonnes. The central Bank of Japan noticed the first serious jump in 1959, with purchases increasing by 169 tonnes. In the year 2011, Bank of Japan sold gold worth Y 20 trillion into the economy to augment investments after the tsunami and nuclear disaster.

Netherland The Netherland Bank manages the Dutch national finances including the gold reserve, with official gold holdings of 612.5 tonnes, equivalent to 59.2 percent of its foreign reserves. In the year 1999 Netherland announced that it will be selling 300 tonnes of gold in the coming five years, but managed to sell only 235 tonnes. It said it would sell a total of 165 tonnes under CBGA 2.

The reserve Bank of India manages the gold reserve, with official holdings of 557.7 tonnes, equivalent to 9.6 percent of its foreign reserves. Since the gold prices plunged, shoppers are flocking to buy gold. The Indian government has been trying hard to stop people from buying gold as the gold imports may raise the country’s current account deficit. India had imported around 71 tonnes of gold in April 2012. The World Gold Council has reportedly approached the Reserve Bank of India and has said it was keen to promote gold as a financial asset, rather than just a physical asset. Following on the heels of a series of steps taken by the government as well as the central bank to rein in gold imports, the Council has said, though it recognises the need for the recent government measures to contain gold imports, it would likely lead to proliferation of grey market trade, a similar situation to the one witnessed before India liberalised gold imports about 15 years ago.

ConAgra Foods, Cargill and CHS announced a definitive agreement recently to combine their North American flour milling businesses to form Ardent Mills, a new flour milling company that will serve customers in the baking and food industries. Ardent Mills will bring together two of the nation’s leading and most respected flour milling companies: ConAgra Mills and Horizon Milling, a Cargill-CHS joint venture formed in 2002. The new company will take advantage of the combined assets, capabilities and experience of ConAgra Foods, Cargill and CHS to bring innovative flour and grain products, services and solutions to the marketplace. Ardent Mills’ vision will be to help customers increase their growth and profitability in an ever-changing marketplace. Its products will be backed by an extensive network of wheat sourcing capabilities and flour milling and bakery mix facilities across North America. Sales for ConAgra Mills, currently a part of ConAgra Foods’ Commercial Foods segment, were approximately $1.8 billion in its fiscal year ended May 27, 2012. Sales for Horizon Milling were approximately $2.5 billion in its fiscal year ended May 31, 2012. The owners intend for Ardent Mills to be self-financed through cash flow from operations and its own bank debt and credit facility. The structure and amount of Ardent Mills’ debt financing will be determined during the pre-close period. The owners intend to receive cash distributions from Ardent Mills at closing. The Initial estimate of total proceeds to be distributed range from $800 million to $1 billion. The formation of Ardent Mills is expected to be completed in late calendar year 2013, following regulatory clearances, financing and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. China’s Run Towards Urbanization China’s capability to feed itself has been threatened by rapid industrial growth and urbanization which has apparently transferred more and more land away from agricultural production. The most important issue for China today is scarcity of land. The land base for agricultural production has been shrinking at a steady pace. Like in most countries, the urban system in china is also influenced by market forces. Cities that produce goods and services that are in demand and attract people to live in them will have faster growth than those that do not.

Such massive construction is seen as a source to create an active consumer market to support the economy. China’s uprooting move has primitively changed this nation of 1.3 billion people and counting. The country’s urban population increased from 170 million in 1978 to 690 million in 2011 which is perhaps a

great social revolution as 600 million people have been given the chance of a better life. The main aim of the government’s modernisation plan is to urbanise 1 billion people by 2030 and by 2025 it will have 221 cities with more than 1 million people. Currently only half that number are. Across rural China, nearly everything has been torn down to make way for new skyscrapers. New schools and hospitals offer good services but

These changes have evoked a mixed response from the now- landless farmers who have been pushed into city life. They lamented about the lack of opportunity to voice their concerns about locating to another place. They expressed anger over the abrupt and dramatic uprooting. They received apartments for free and thousands of dollars for their land but their primary concern is about their future when the money runs out. An estimate of $600 billion a year has been planned by the state on new roads, hospitals, schools and community centres. Huge sums will be needed to pay for the education, healthcare and pensions of ex-farmers. The urbanisation drive presents an enormous challenge to the ruling communist party. Land disputes which accounts for
protests each year in which people sometimes set themselves ablaze rather than relocate and the other millions who pack into the cities is testing China’s ability to maintain a stable governance. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences cautioned that the urbanisation drive would throw up a variety of problems and a series of legal changes would be required to overcome this. Some of these problems could include dismal pollution, traffic congestion, contaminated food, chronic unemployment, which in turn would lead to protests from farmers who are skeptical about moving. Most jobs are quite far from the newly built towns .And even if farmers do get jobs, they might as well lose them when they cross 45, since

[COVER STORY[ employers need young and efficient workers .Instead of creating wealth, urbanisation would potentially create a huge underclass in the cities and the ruining of rural culture and religion. The push for urbanisation is to change the country’s economic scenario. New city dwellers mean new opportunities for construction companies, public transportation and utilities. Economists say the government need not bear the cost completely because once the farmers start earning in the city, they will start paying taxes and

contribute to welfare programs. With very limited revenue the local governments still needs resources to get these programs started. But they rely mostly on central government transfer payments or land sales and without their own resources they are reluctant to allow new city dwellers to attend local schools or avail from health care programs. China officially has 53 percent rate of urbanisation but just 35 percent of the people has urban residency permit. This permit allows a person to enroll in local schools or get medical benefits. Urbanisation is good in the long run but in the short term the rural

population still lags behind in enjoying the benefits of economic development. It will be interesting to see how this social experiment turns out in the coming years.
Fighting Pollution Beijing- China’s Council has set new rules to curb air pollution one of the many environmental hazards that are plaguing the country. The council has promised to preserve the resources vowing “tough measures for tough tasks” In a meeting the State Council adopted 10 new measures demonstrating to not only resolve but also promote ecological progress as a task of vital significance for the people’s welfare and the country’s economic future.

These include speeding up the installation of pollution control equipment on coal fuelled refineries, restraining the growth of high energy consuming industries such as steel, cement, aluminium and glass, to control air borne particles that are smaller than 2.5 microns which are deemed a risk to health and to reduce pollution emissions per unit of GDP by at least 30 percent in heavy polluting industries by the end of 2017. Back in 2007, statistics done by the World Bank found that in China around 750,000 people lost their lives every year because of pollution. A study done by the Lancet, a British medical journal, titled “2010’s Global Burden of Disease Study”, found that around 1.2 million people died prematurely in china due to air pollution. The World Health Organisation considers 25 micrograms a safe level. A Deutsche Bank report on air

pollution released last in China called for certain policy changes to reduce the urban PM2.5 to a level of 30 by 2030.It said China should find ways to realize an eco-friendly and sustainable growth by increasing investment in cleaner energies- gas, nuclear, hydroelectric wind & solar and in subways and railways. The new measures call for greater co-operation among cities and provinces. The local governments should shoulder the responsibilities and also prepare emergency response plans for heavy pollution, including traffic restrictions and limits on local industries. In addition heavy fines will be laid for polluters and stringent requirements for environmental impact statements. The government will also reinforce
its efforts in collecting pollutant discharge and will offer more credit support to projects that will reduce air pollution. It also promised to help China‘s troubled solar industry during its “production and operating difficulties” despite problems with overcapacity and ongoing trade disputes with the US and Europe. China’s biggest environmental issues are linked to its fast but comprehensive economic expansion. These issues need extensive efforts from all the sectors mainly from the local governments. Their active participation is crucial for implementing the policies and supervising enterprises.

Shanghai is a city of contrasts, which makes it a particularly tantalizing locale to explore. Among the area’s landmark buildings are the former Shanghai Club (once the go-to gathering spot for British Nationals, which became the Waldorf-Astoria Shanghai Hotel in 2010) and the Customs House, which has a tower that was constructed to look like Big Ben in London. The French Concession is the region of Shanghai that once housed the city’s French settlement and retains a quaint charm thanks to tree-lined streets and mansions dating back to this time. The Central Huaihai Road offers high-end shopping options and a concentration of 19th-century shikumen-style residences, which meld Western influences and Eastern traditions into whimsical gated row houses with Chinese accents. This neighborhood is also the place to peruse one-of-a-kind garments created by up-and-coming local designers with their own stand-alone boutiques. Hengshan Road has become a nightlife destination with many bars and clubs. In the Xintiandi region, many shikumen houses have been refurbished into a fashionable, car-free shopping area that includes restaurants and boutiques featuring brands like Shanghai Tang. The Shikumen Open House Museum provides an opportunity to see what life was like for inhabitants of such a house, and the Museum of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party contains exhibitions related to Communist history. Another French Concession residence that has been turned into a popular museum is that of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary who is recognized for having founded modern China in the early 20th Century.

Learn about the city’s most ancient history at the Shanghai Museum, in the central Huangpu district, one of the world’s most densely populated urban areas. The museum’s permanent exhibitions include a spectacular collection of artifacts, artwork and furniture, including that from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its location on People’s Square lends itself to a nice afternoon with a stroll over to the square and its park, and then along the nearby Nanjing Road, the city’s main shopping thoroughfare. On West Nanjing Road is Jing’an Temple, or the “Temple of Peace and Tranquility,” a Buddhist temple first built in a different location in 247 AD. That temple was moved to this site in 1216 and then rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty. Across the street is the picturesque Jing’an Park. Art aficionados will also want to visit M50, located on Moganshan Road, which houses more than 120 galleries in a renovated industrial mill, and offers a crash course in Shanghai’s budding contemporary art scene. Across the Huangpu River from downtown Shanghai, the neighborhood of Pudong has become an epicenter of business, high-end shopping and luxury accommodations.

Nevertheless, protracted negotiations can often be wound up neatly during a business banquet or an after-hours karaoke session - these are the settings where China’s legendary guanxi (connections) are exercised. If you are comfortable drinking in this environment, then it can be fun and help cement relations. Proposing a toast to your hosts, and thanking them for their hospitality will score points. On an overseas trip where you may be jet-lagged and outside your comfort zone drinking may not be high on the agenda but fear not, a polite refusal will not cause offence. Corporate business may be formal, with executives wearing suits and exchanging business cards (given with both hands), bows and handshakes. Business with manufacturers and agents on the other hand will tend to be relaxed with informal dress code being the norm. Gifts may help open initial contacts in a formal environment (again not in a manufacturing environment), although these should never be open to misinterpretation as bribes. In some companies, the business owner may preside at the first sessions, and then leave the real business to the operational management. It’s possible that in some larger and older companies, a party appointee, who has an honorary or nominal senior post in the company, may even play this role. Business hours are usually 0800-1700 weekdays, with one or two hours for lunch, but people will tend to be totally flexible and accommodating with overseas visitors. Nearly all companies will arrange pickups from hotels and airports. Expect to do business any day of the week, even Saturdays.
