Nowadays we all know it as term for mad discounts and shopping craziness, but above all, when it comes to business, as billions worth Black Friday deals. But in case you have forgotten the term black Friday wasn’t referring to something positive, when first used in 1869; it was used for sudden market drop that led to depression whereas use of the term continued for describing a number of Fridays in history where an event led to public chaos or disaster.

One of the theories on why is it called Black Friday in the first place says it comes from the old fashioned way business accounts were recorded; losses in red ink and profits in black one. That theory actually makes sense if you consider the kind of money these companies make from Black Friday business. Last year if you were one of the buyers, you were part of the $59.1 billion worth shopping craziness with extra more $1 billion in online sales and for this year billions that are about to be spent are estimated to increase, especially when it come to on line shopping. It is for sure easier to enjoy mad discounts from a safe environment like house or office, instead of being part of chaos in shops.

Smartphones have currently surpassed the traditional cellphone demand in the United States and since Apple and Samsumg are the companies which make most profits in the worldwide smartphone market, the manufacturers of cheap smartphones are forced to look for emerging markets where the new high-end devices are not that popular. This is the case of Motorola Mobility, the handset producer owned by Google, which is still trying to find its niche with the help of its new product: Moto G.

The most attractive feature of the cheap smartphone is the access to Google’s Internet services embedded in the device, which enables users to experience a high quality mobile internet experience. However, this characteristic is not very attractive in China, an important potential costumer, for the government blocks several Google services, including Play, Google’s online store. Consequently, Denisse Woodside, Motorola’s chief executive, said that their ability to compete in China’s smartphone market was constrained and that the new low-priced smartphone won’t be offered in China at the moment. In addition, as many other American companies, Motorola will most likely find tough international competition, especially in countries where many smartphone makers have been selling low-priced devices for years.

Can you think of all of the changes along your business or career since 1995? For sure many things have changed; it’s a long time period when it comes to business. This is the exactly same period that took U.S. oil production to accomplish same level of affectivity as it had in 1995. Everybody calls it milestone; turning point, surely it is if we look just few years back, but it’s more like achieving something U.S. oil production already had. It is like reviving the old glory, the great thing that happened to make it possible is the fact that oil production exceeded net imports, first time after 1995. It is a big deal for United States for many reasons, but for sure the one that is obvious at the first glance is prove that steps taken in last decades in order to enable States to achieve energy independence are showing their results.

U.S. oil production has been actually booming since 2008, but seems like around 5 years was the time necessary for oil production to exceed oil consumption. There were several factors that lead to this change, but converge of two trends influenced a lot; first of the trends is domestic oil production being at 24-year high whereas another trend has foreign oil imports at 17 years low.

Eight States pledge for Zero-Emission Vehicles. Governors of eight states announced a groundbreaking initiative to put 3.3 million zero-emission vehicles (ZEV) on the roads by 2025. These eight states representing nearly a quarter of U.S. auto sales signed a pact to boost the number of electric- and hydrogen-fueled cars, trucks and buses. These states have the main mission to help make the highways friendlier for zero-emission vehicles. And California is helping lead the charge.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) calls for developing joint policies to promote sales of electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. To encourage them, the pledge calls on for development of more public charging stations, purchasing zero-emission vehicles for state government fleets. Together with providing tax breaks or other financial incentives to consumers and also reducing electric rates for home charging systems and many other incentives to increase electric cars sales, like lowering the cost of electric cars. By creating charging stations and other fuelling infrastructure the goal is to get 3.3 million of the vehicles on the roads by 2025 and hence curb greenhouse gas pollution.

Six years ago, most phones used keypads instead of touchscreens; nowadays, society has adopted the latter as the default mode of input in terms of gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, handled consoles, and laptops. As if it was not enough, technology is about to go a step forward again. No, it is not yet time for the hologram interaction, but what about receiving sensory feedback from your devices’ screens? Feeling the keyboard on your smartphone, the icons of your home screen, or the texture of your photos will be part of your daily life experience in the near future, for Walt Disney Company has made the technologic fairytale come true: They have developed a sensorial touchscreen that enables users to touch and feel the contents on their devices.

Developed by Disney’s lab, Disney Research, the sensorial touchscreen makes advanced calculations to sense the fingers’ movement and creates the perception of a 3D bump on the touch surface, through modulation of the frictional forces on the sliding finger in order to match the tactile properties of the visual content displayed and create screen textures. “Our brain perceives the 3D bump on a surface mostly from information that it receives via skin stretching,” explained Ivan Poupvrev, director of Disney Research Pittsburgh’s Interaction Group.

A very famous quote about charisma reads, “Charisma is a sparkle in people that money can’t buy. It’s an invisible energy with visible effects”.

Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

025

Charisma is a quality that is associated with leaders, and is often said to be that one trait that is not necessary for effective leadership but can make all the difference in the world. You do not have to be a charismatic leader to be a good leader, but if you have charisma, you will be a great leader, a revered leader and above all, a memorable leader. Freddie Mercury once said, “The reason we’re successful darling, My overall charisma, of course!” Charismatic leaders are the most successful, the most respected and the most loved of all. You can enforce your leadership with a dictatorial style, you can ensure results with bureaucratic leadership and you can affect a relaxed work atmosphere with a laissez-faire style, but if you really want results and you want to be liked while you get things done, you have to be a charismatic leader!

Freddie Mercury Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

026

It has often been said that it is easy to impress other people, win their trust and loyalty, inspire their confidence and teamwork, but without charisma, it is difficult to be liked and the love and affection of people can only be gotten with personal charm, appeal and of course, charisma. Out of the various leadership styles and traits, charisma is the vaguest, least known quality. Charisma is intangible and cannot be confined to a fixed structural definition; it is an abstract energy, a magnetic appeal that draws others to you. So what are the charismatic leader traits and how are they different from the regular, better known leadership qualities? Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

027

To quote Napoleon Bonaparte, “Leaders are dealers in hope”. Charismatic leaders are optimistic people: they expect the best, they look forward to positive results and invariably, they get great things done. Hope, is a defining feature of charismatic leaders, and not only do they have a ton of hope themselves, but more importantly, they spread it amongst others. Charismatic leaders understand that each person wants to do well and be successful and has a deep hope of achieving something in their lives, so they work hard to strengthen this hope and give people the positivity to dream big and believe they will be able to succeed. Charismatic leaders infuse people with optimism and passion and make a bright, fantastic goal seem like an achievable reality, each time.

A good leader makes his followers feel good about him. A charismatic leader makes his followers feel good about themselves. The first and foremost trait of a charismatic leader is the ability to make people feel taken care of, appreciated, respected and above all, important. A charismatic leader is, before all else, genuinely interested in other people.

A significant charismatic leader trait is an unbeatable sense of enthusiasm and love for life. Charismatic leaders inspire others to be happy because they are happy themselves; they love life, they enjoy every moment of their work, they take pride in their responsibilities and they are full of energy. A charismatic leader is one who simply radiates joy, enthusiasm and passion. Charismatic leaders celebrate life in the smallest moments, and it is with this ‘joi de vivre’ that charismatic leaders win followers and support. It is very basic psychology really: happy people attract other people. Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

028

Nelson Mandela Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

029

Charismatic leaders are set apart from others by the fact that they can immediately see the potential of other people, they appreciate the said potential and they know how to bring it out and put it to use. Charismatic leaders do not just focus on harnessing others’ potential; they truly appreciate it and place a high value on it. A charismatic leader is one who recognizes the strengths of others in the team, respects them, and is personally glad to have the opportunity to work with other talented people. Charismatic leaders are predisposed towards seeing the best in people and expecting the best from people. They set a high bar for everyone and have the faith that each person is going to meet the expectations. It has often been said that charismatic leaders show so much faith and confidence in their teams that the others are inspired to do their very best.

To quote Napoleon Bonaparte, “Leaders are dealers in hope. Charismatic leaders are optimistic people: they expect the best, they look forward to positive results and invariably, they get great things done. Hope, is a defining feature of charismatic leaders, and not only do they have a ton of hope themselves, but more importantly, they spread it amongst others. optimism and passion and make a bright, fantastic goal seem like an achievable reality, each time.

A very positive trait of charismatic leaders is that they are willing to share their strengths, experiences, skills and knowledge with others. Many leaders like to keep some aces up their sleeves, keep their skills to themselves and not empower others fully in an attempt to stay one step ahead always. Charismatic leaders, however, are not afraid of losing their leadership because they want to achieve the greater good and are happy to do so by enabling others to succeed both at an individual level and as a team. Thinking about others is the founding block of charismatic leadership, and so, charismatic leaders are always looking to share their resources and wisdom and findings with others. In respect of these traits, it is worth noting that charismatic leaders are actually true servants of their followers: they aim to please, empower and enable their followers to do all they can to achieve all they can.

the opportunity to taste how it feels like when food you eat has been prepared by someone who was born in cooking dynasty. Anne-Sophie Pic is today’s chef, crafting the food and menus just as her father, Jacques Pic, did before her, and her grandfather, André Pic, even before that. We don’t even have to mention that all of them achieved three Michelin stars during their tenure. Michelin stars made her the only woman in France to have obtained them, and this year Anne-Sophie Pic has celebrated 120 years of her family’s cooking dynasty, they have never stopped putting on the table simply refined excellence. In a man’s world, only few women managed to make a name for themselves amongst the culinary elite, Anne-Sophie Pic offers a “feminine” cuisine with an amazing sensitive touch. You will find Diamond sushi place, Masa restaurant in the heart of the Big Apple at the Time Warner Center run by the chef Masa Takayama, who was born in Tochigi, Japan, the three-Michelin-star restaurant only offers a tasting menu. That also gives another specific feeling while eating there, there is no menu to order from and Chef Masa keeps a record of what he has served to his customers and what their reactions were, you can see him working and he often actually serves the food, so the price is not too high for this kind of treatment. Besides he uses many exotic ingredients, such as truffles and Kobe beef while most of the fish is flown directly from Japan. Since Masa is considered to be one of if not the world’s best sushi and Japanese restaurants, term Dimond Sushi is not exaggeration. But at the end if you don’t like the fact that there is no Menu to order from, next door to the restaurant is Bar Masa, a more accessible dining experience offering an à la carte menu. When you would put many business news in last decade at one place, you could come to the conclusion that in 21st century business everything is about mergering. The number of enormus companies merging with other ones or smaller ones is literally schoking. Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

Seems like the key to succses is to merge with another company or it might also be that the way to survive rapidly changing markets in every field is just forcing companies to merge in order to survive or stay on top. It doesn’t happen often that airplane companies merge as it happens with different types of companies, especilly tech ones, but merged wings of American Airlines and US Airways might be bringing some new changes to that trend.

This December is a new start for American Airlines and US Airways, since they got their slot or permission to take off in November their deal is finally being finished in December. After pronouncement of a federal bankruptcy judge American Airlines and US Airways were free to complete their merger and become the world’s largest airline. The judge rejected a request by a group of consumers to block the deal between airlines. Merged wings plan to justify reasons of the merging and don’t have an intention to let down all the people who were worried about their business plan in the first place. With this merger deal everything wasn’t going so smoothly from the beginning. Problems with merging started in August when Justice Department block the merger, with explanation that this deal would hurt the competition on the market and by doing so, lead to higher prices for passengers. The regulators settled their case in exchange for the airlines’ promise to surrender some coveted landing rights at Reagan National near Washington and LaGuardia in New York and a few gates at five other airports, so part of the deal is their obligatory to fulfill these conditions. It happened already in September that District Court Judge Sean Lane had approved the merge-and-emerge-from-bankruptcy plan of American parent AMR Corp, but with the condition that the company winning or settling the lawsuit filed by the government.

All the way in January 2012 US Airways Group, which is the parent company of US Airways initiated the idea by showing an interest in taking over AMR Corporation, American Airlines parent company. It took almost three months AMR to reply to the proposal, so in March after AMR confirmed that they were opened for the idea, still at that point future of the plan wasn’t clear yet. They waited till August 2012 when Airways CEO Doug Parker announced that American Airlines and US Airways had signed a nondisclosure agreement, but still in this agreement they would only discuss the possibility of a merger, according to the announcement. It took them till the February 2013 to announce plans to merge. After their official announcement it meant only one; if they accomplish their plan and successfully bring it to the end merging between them would create the largest airline in the world. The deal was that stakeholders of AMR will own 72% of the company and US Airways shareholders will own the remaining 28%. The combined airline will carry the American Airlines name and branding; the holding company will be renamed American Airlines Group Inc. With new merged wings, new airline will have more than 6,700 daily flights to 336 locations in 56 countries worldwide making it the largest airline in the world.

After becoming one company The US Airways’ management team, including CEO will keep most operational management positions. The headquarters for the new airline will be at American’s current headquarters in Dallas-Fort Worth and will maintain a significant corporate, operational and hub presence in Phoenix. The combined company will keep the iconic American Airlines brand name, and they came out with the official announcement that they plan to provide passengers with more choices and better service throughout the world. For US Airways merging meant exiting Star Alliance while American will retain its Oneworld alliance. The merged airline will have about $40 billion in operating revenue. Just to compare for the year 2012 US’s operating revenue totaled $13.83 billion and AA’s operating revenue totaled $24.85 billion. Total number of passengers boarded is estimated to approximately 190 million per year. This is a great difference when compared to sum of boarded passenger for companies separately in 2012. For the year 2012, AA’s annual passengers boarded in thousands were 107,810, while US’s 82,546 also in thousands. They expect total revenue passenger miles per year to be around 210 billion. If you wonder how they think to change numbers so much, the merged airline is going to have a delivery of 607 new aircrafts, including 517 narrowbody aircraft and 90 widebody international aircraft.

United States Department of Justice together with attorneys general from the District of Columbia, Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia started a lawsuit on 13th of August in order to block the merger. Their biggest concern was that two companies merging would mean monopole over competition and consequently higher prices. American Airlines and US Airways both said that they would fight against the lawsuit and defend their merger. In early October, 2013, the District Attorney of Texas quit the anti-trust lawsuit. It happened already in September that District Court Judge Sean Lane had approved the merge-and-emerge-from-bankruptcy plan of American parent AMR Corp, but with the condition that the company winning or settling the lawsuit filed by the government. Hearing in Lane’s courtroom during November brought new accusations for companies; a lawyer for a group of consumers also had something to add, asking the judge to block the merger until a trial could be held on his antitrust lawsuit. His arguments were almost the same as the ones raised by the government which ended being drooped, so Lane denied the request. After that nothing was on the way anymore and companies were ready to fly. Following the Department of Justice approval, US Airways and AMR announced that the merged company will trade on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the symbol AAL.

Time Travel Different extracts of literature are evidence of this. For instance, within Hindu mythology, the Mahabharata includes the story of King Raivata Kakudmi, who pursues a journey to heaven in order to meet his creator, Brahma. Later, when he returns to Earth, he is shocked to realize that many ages have passed. Other example, closer to our times, is Alexander Veltman’s . The Forebears of Kalimeros: Alexander, son of Philip of Macedon (1836), which is considered the first original Russian science fiction novel as well as the first work of literature that explained time travel. In this narrative, the protagonist rides a hippogriff to ancient Greece, where he meets Aristotle, and later goes on a trip with Alexander the Great before going back to the 18th century. It was until 1887 that the idea of a time machine was conceived as part of a time travel story, when Enrique Gaspary Rimbau wrote El Anacronopete, a Spanish science fiction novel which features a time travel device called Anacronopete. This vehicle is described as a cast iron box powered by electricity, which drove four large pneumatical structures ending in tubes. In addition, a device that produced Garcia fluid, which prevented passengers from growing younger as they traveled back in time, was incorporated to the craft. Nowadays, more than one hundred years later, the idea of a device that allows humans to travel back and forth in time has inspired not only contemporary writers but also devoted scientists. The concept is so popular that it is normal to refer to such vehicle as if it was a plane or a car. Who would not want to go back in time and meet a deceased loved one or travel to the future just to check if things have worked out all right? Well‌ the idea always sounds good, perhaps easy; however, time travelling involves multiple physical and philosophical paradoxes. Hop on and let us take you in a tour through the most recent scientific theories pertaining time travel! Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

Time Travel

Let us start by making you aware of an elemental fact: you are already time travelling, right now, in this very moment. Like it or not, we are constantly undergoing changes, time is passing: we age, planets move, things fall apart. We measure this trip in seconds, minutes, hours, and years; nevertheless, this does not necessarily mean that time flows at a constant pace. Just as water in a river slows or rushes depending on the size of the channel, time flows at different pace in different places. Time is relative. So, what causes this fluctuation? It all comes down to the relationship between space and time. Space is considered as a tridimensional concept, which includes: width, depth, and length. Time is considered a fourth dimension, which is correlated to space. Therefore, time cannot exist without space and vice-versa. The two concepts, the four dimensions, exist as one known as the space-time continuum. This means that every single event that occurs in the universe has to involve both time and space. Having this in mind, let us go deeper into the existing and hypothetical methods of time travel in our universe. Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

Black Holes Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

092

Nowadays, going through time a bit faster than the standard is possible. One way of achieving this is by exploiting the space-time continuum, which is something that global positioning satellites do every day, accumulating an extra third-of-a-billion of a second daily. How? Simple: since satellites are farther away from Earth mass and its force of gravity, time passes faster. Our planet’s mass drags on time and slows it down. This is called “effect gravitational time dilation”. Einstein’s theory of general relativity establishes that gravity represents a curve in space and time. It not only pulls on space, it also pulls on time. The stronger gravity is; the slower time becomes. Therefore, approaching bigger numbers, if a sufficiently massive object, such as a black hole with a mass of 4 million suns and a tremendous force of gravity--two times greater than Earth’s force of gravity-- centers our galaxy, any object circling it (without falling in) would experience time at half Earth’s rate. Under this hypothesis, you would go through a five year journey while a whole decade passes on Earth. If you happened to go back to our blue planet after the trip, you would travel 5 years into the future, for time in Earth was faster under its gravity forces. Speed also influences the rate in which time is experienced, it passes more slowly the closer an object approaches the unbreakable cosmic speed limit known as speed of light. Consequently, the hands of a clock in a speeding train move more slowly than those of a motionless clock back in the train station. This imperceptible delay, of billionths of a second, may be nothing for a human being; however, if that same train could reach 99.999 percent of light speed, only one year would pass on board the moving vehicle for every 223 years back in the motionless train station. This theory is known as the “Twin Paradox”, in which time runs slower for Twin B (you in the train), than for Twin A (Bob, your friend in the station). Therefore, when you return to the train station, where a great amount of time has passed for Bob, you will be significantly younger than him; perhaps you will meet his great-grandsons instead! The mechanism behind this theory is also called “time dilatation” and it has a stronger effect as the object travels closer to the speed of light.

Wormhole Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

094

Wormhole

According to NASA, Einstein’s general relativity theory also provides several unusual scenarios that could allow humans to go back to the past; nevertheless, the simple premise of going back to yesterday violates the law of cause and effect and many scientists have dismissed this kind of time travel as a possibility. Other supporting argument for this negative position is known as the “grandfather paradox”, which establishes that inconsistencies could ensue if the time traveler changed things back in the past. The clearest example of this is if the time traveler killed his grandfather before he met his grandmother. If he did so, then his father or mother would never have been born, neither the time explorer himself, in which case he would never have gone back in time to murder his grandfather. Despite the previous conclusions, we still have some positive hypothesis towards time traveling into the past, being one of them the famous “wormhole”. This concept represents a theoretical bridge, tunnel, or shortcut through space-time which would allow a ship to travel from one point to another, faster than the speed of light. A wormhole can be explained by the following example: Draw a point at the bottom of a sheet of paper. Then, fold the sheet and draw a second point just where the first point remains in the other side. This will show one point going from one side of the paper to the other. Finally, unfold the paper. You will find the same point but in different places. That is how a wormhole works: it is a spot connecting two different points in space and time. This time travel possibility was proposed under Einstein’s relativity theory; however, it has never been proven to exist. Furthermore, if a wormhole was discovered or created, there is no knowledge of whether humans could actually go though it and survive the ride. Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

095

Roy Kerr Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

096

Torn Star Other theory involves black holes again. This time, instead of simply circling around the big dark mole, as described in the travel into the future hypothesis, people would actually go into the cosmic titan’s maw. Most scientists agree that the black hole is likely to crush and smash people, killing them, unless it is a very unique variety of them: the Kerr black hole or Kerr ring. In 1963, Roy Kerr, a New Zealand mathematician, proposed the first rational theory for a rotating black hole. His concept centers on neutron stars, which are massive collapsed stars, with the dimensions of Manhattan but with the mass of Earth’s sun. Kerr proposed that if dying stars collapsed into a rotating ring of neutron stars, their centrifugal force would prevent that they turn into a singularity. Therefore, since the black hole would not have a singularity, Kerr postulated it would be safe to enter without any danger of having the gravitational force pulling the traveler into the center. If this kind of black hole exists, scientists speculate that humans might pass through it and exit though a white hole. The latter is the exhausted end of a black hole which, instead of pulling things into its gravitational force, pushes everything out and away from it—maybe into another time or universe. Kerr rings are only a theoretical possibility, but if they do exist, they offer a one-way trip into the past or future. Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

Time Machine Industry Leaders Magazine | December 2013

098

Rian Johnson Looper Time Machine

It is generally understood that a machine or device would be required to help time travelers accomplish their goal. Time machine research usually involves bending space and time so far that time lines turn back on themselves and form a loop, precisely identified as a “closed time-like curve”. Most of the times, these devices are thought to need an unusual exotic form of matter, which contains “negative energy density” and other bizarre properties. Such matter might theoretically exist; however, if it does, it is quite possible that it might be found only in small quantities which are not enough for the machine’s needs. Further studies have shown that time machines could be built without the exotic matter. This type of device would be a doughnut-shaped hole enveloped within a sphere of ordinary matter. Then, space-time travel could be achieved by using gravitational fields to form a closed time-like curve inside the doughnut-shaped vacuum. To go back in time, the time traveler would race around inside the doughnut-shaped device, going further back into the past with each lap. This theory sounds promising but still has a number of obstacles such as the gravitational fields, which are not easy to manipulate, especially when they are as strong as the ones needed by this time traveling device.
