The restaurant he had optimistically purchased in the hope that it would make him a rich man, failed. Investment gone, and poised on the brink of filing for bankruptcy, he stopped by his insurance agent’s office at New York Life (NYL) to cash out his policy to keep his family afloat until he found a job. company’s philanthropy. “The NYL Foundation contributed $11.25 million in 2010, largely to organizations benefitting children,” said Cherivirala. “NYL, through the education program Ekal Vidyalaya, supports 100 schools in rural and tribal areas in India. There is no better investment than our children.” He introduced Ekal Vidyalaya representative Subhash Gupta, who told gatherees that the funds help children in remote areas who have no access to schools. “We have to collect the children and take them to classes,” said Gupta. “We also train their parents in economic development and how to better their livelihood,” he said. Kingfisher Airlines Loss Doubles to Rs.469 Crore

MUMBAI (Hindu): In a challenging quarter for the aviation industry, Vijay Mallya-promoted Kingfisher Airlines has announced a doubling of its losses for the September 2011 quarter at Rs.469 crore against a loss of Rs.231 crore in the same period last year. The operating revenue for the quar quarter was up 7 per cent at Rs.1,528 crore against Rs.1,383 crore. According to the company, the momentum has continued with demand growth of 20 per cent during the quarter. “However, it has been matched by a capacity growth of 20 per cent, putting pressure on yields for the industry. This has been coupled with a more than 35 per cent rise in fuel price as compared to the same quarter last year.” While Kingfisher’s passenger load factor was higher than the industry’s at 77 per cent (72 per cent for industry), it reported an operating loss of Rs.271 crore against an operating profit of Rs.55 crore in the same period last year. This was reflected on the operating margin too with the company reporting a negative margin of 16.7 per cent against a positive 3.6 per cent in the year-ago period. Its domestic operations saw a 5 per cent increase in revenues at Rs.1,145 crore but it reported an operating loss of Rs.195 crore against an operating profit of Rs.108 crore. Its international operations reported an operating loss of Rs.76 crore against a loss of Rs.53 crore on a 11 per cent higher operating revenue of Rs.383 crore (Rs.345 crore). Addressing the media, Vijay Mallya, Chairman, Kingfisher Airlines, said that the environment in the Indian aviation sector was a high cost one. “It is highly taxed and restrictive for investments and this is affecting viability of the industry. The industry is in serious trouble and we are not worse off than anyone else and are better off than several others but the government should address these systemic issues.”

On international expansion plans, Mr. Mallya said, “There is no need for international expansion as we plan to join the One-World Alliance next quarter where members including Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and British Airways use partners’ routes to shore up networks. However, we are going to improve utilisation on our A-320 and A-321 by flying to neighbouring countries and within India.” Mr. Mallya also said that Airbus had confirmed the rescheduling of delivery of the A-380 aircraft ordered by Kingfisher as “the environment is not conducive for the next five years for A-380 operations in India.” Kingfisher has ordered for five A320s this year with the first of them coming in December but all may not be delivered this year. During the period, the airline has undertaken several projects to improve its operational performance and also initiated a large-scale aircraft reconfiguration at minimal cost on the existing fleet. According to Sanjay Agarwal, CEO, Kingfisher Airlines, “we are in discussions with various banks to reduce interest cost without further restructuring and have decided to focus on a single segment of full service airline. The court gave this instruction after it had examined the report earlier submitted by the CBI on Friday. It told the agency to submit another “progress report” on November 24. Meanwhile, speculation is rife about the possible location where the CD, showing Maderna with Bhanwari was shot. The background shown in the CD could provide a clue to the actual place. The investigating team has created a chart of the wall in the background, texture, light, color and the variety of furniture in the room where the CD was shot. It is believed that the place could possibly be a guest house in Ajmer where Maderna was a regular visitor. Another source revealed that Bhanwari Devi was known to frequently visit the district council’s office and was in touch with almost all local political leaders. It was Bhanwari Devi’s beauty that had attracted the attention and evil eye of all and sundry including ministers and other influential politicians. Bhanwari too flaunted this god-given asset and also perhaps en cashed it. The controversial CD that showed her with Maderna was a big weapon in her hand. It was perhaps this explosive CD that scared Maderna, leaving him no options but to take some drastic steps. Bhanwari Devi, according to some other sources, was keen on contesting elections to the state assembly and could have used the CD to blackmail Maderna. Kingfisher would like to take the opportunity to clarify its position on the following points: • The airline industry in India is going through a tough period due to high costs and lower yields. This is evident by the unprecedented losses recently reported. To counter these pressures and leveraging its strengths, Kingfisher decided to rationalize network, drop unprofitable flights and expedite its fleet reconfiguration. This initiative will improve the long term profitability of the airline. • The reconfiguration initiative will require up to 3 aircraft to be out of service over the next three months at any one time for this exercise to be completed. It will reduce the number of fleet configurations from 7 to 3, improving operational flexibility. This initiative will add more seats to the fleet, improving revenue production of each aircraft. • The actions over the last few weeks have been to implement the above strategy in a pre-determined and well-controlled fashion. • Kingfisher Airlines has rationalized its network to offer maximum and seamless connectivity. As per the revised schedule, it will offer 300 daily flights connecting 54 cities as compared to its previous schedule of 340 flights. The revised schedule is being loaded in the system and guests can confidently continue booking Kingfisher flights. • Our guests remain our top priority. We reached out to all our guests who were booked on these cancelled flights to re-accommodate them either on our or other airline flights. We offered full refund to those who so desired. We apologize to the guests who might have been inconvenienced. • No Kingfisher flights have been canceled due to lack of pilots or other staff. The attrition of 100 pilots did not happen overnight. Kingfisher has sufficient number of pilots and a robust pipeline of new pilots to continue to operate its scheduled flights. • The CAR140 requires DGCA to be informed if there are flight cancellations for a longer period of time. While we were finalizing the plans, we only announced these cancellations until November 19th. We did not feel the need for informing DGCA. In hindsight, we should have informed them and we apologized to them for the same. • Kingfisher has credit terms or payment arrangements with all its vendors which we are complying with. • Kingfisher has not made any bail out request to the government. We have only asked our banks for an increase in limits due to significant increase in operating costs caused by increase in fuel prices and rupee devaluation. • There has been a few days delay for the last 2-3 months in payment of employee salaries. However, all employees have been paid in the month the salaries were due. • Kingfisher does not see any risk to its future or long term viability. The whole Indian Aviation Industry is struggling due to high costs and lower yields. We are no exception. Like any other prudent business we are taking steps to improve our financial performance.
