Maya Harris Meets Tamil Americans Virtually

Maya spoke of an incident when her mother Shyamala Gopalan pushed two year old Kamala on a stroller during a civil rights march. After the event, her mother asked Kamala what you want. Kamala said Freedom. Maya requested the group to call eligible voters to support in closely contested states. US Congressman from Illinois, Raja Krishnamurthy, requested the audience to vote and contest for elected positions. Rajan Natarajan
and Sundar Kuppuswamy organized the meeting. “I think most people who know Maya will tell you she’s one of the smartest people they know,” Kamala told Politico. She often stands in for Kamala at events and is considered her closest confidante; she even officiated her sister’s wedding to Emhoff. In a related development, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s running mate and the California U.S. senator, will be visiting Texas on Friday, according to an email Biden’s campaign sent to Democratic lawmakers in Texas on Sunday. Harris will be the highest-profile representative of the Biden campaign to visit Texas in person dur-

Who is Sri Preston Kulkarni? An Upclose and Personal Viewpoint By Padma Srinivasan
Sugar Land: One evening in early 2018, people were walking in to hear Beto O’Rourke speak at a Town Hall meeting in Sugar Land. I noticed a lone person standing outside handing out business cards telling people that he was running for Congress in Congressional District 22, Fort Bend County to unseat the then incumbent Pete Olson. No one thought at that time that a movement would build and he would have more than 1000 volunteers to help propel him to within 5% points of beating Rep. Pete Olson. That person was Sri Preston Kulkarni. Undeterred, Sri is running again this year for the same congressional seat in CD 22. Many volunteers like me are working hard to get him elected this time. Sri Kulkarni is more than a candidate running for Congress. He is a family man with a strong moral compass. After his father’s death when he was 19, Sri left college to help his mother take care of his younger siblings. Later, he left his job as a Foreign Service Officer to serve his country. On the campaign trail, Sri is rarely seen without his mother, his strongest supporter. Sri reveres his mother and the memory of his father. He took time off from his 2018 campaign to perform his father’s 20th death anniversary ritual in the Hindu tradition. Having known Sri for the last
three years, I understand the values and life experiences that underlie some of his policy positions and his plans for the future of CD 22. Notably, Sri’s foreign policy is driven by his experience as a Foreign Service Officer in the State Department and he recognizes the values of inclusion and decency in a compassionate America. And his views on healthcare and gun violence make greater sense viewed against his experiences as a youth. Sri was serving in Jamaica when the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville protesting the removal of a confederate statue unfolded. Sri was asked to defend the statement made by Pres-
ident Trump that there were “fine people on both sides” of the rally. Sri couldn’t and cancelled the interview, for he had witnessed the effects of Nationalistic agendas in other countries – broken democracies. He resigned, to return home and run for office. In 1997 when Sri was 19, Sri’s father and his role model, Vekatesh Rao Kulkarni, was diagnosed with leukemia. Mr. Kulkarni passed away a year later. The debilitating illness cost emotional as well as financial hardship on the family as the medical bills piled up. Sri’s family was near bankrupt, and was in danger of losing their house. Having seen firsthand the high cost of healthcare has motivated Sri to fight for a comprehensive
and sensible healthcare coverage for all Fort Bend families. He understands the need for people not just to have adequate coverage, but guidance on navigating the legal and financial storms surrounding a debilitating illness and hospitalization. Ideally, Sri would want his constituents to retain protections for pre-existing conditions due to COVID. Regarding gun violence, Sri knows the fear of a victim. Years ago when he was delivering pizzas, he was mugged near his apartment. After the police sent him home, he was assaulted again and his family too was threatened by the assailants. Years later, Sri and his family were caught in a gas station gun fire from which they narrowly es-
caped. It is this victim’s perspective that motivates Sri to promote universal background checks and laws preventing domestic abusers from owning guns. On education and immigration, Sri often invokes his father, who believed that there is no better gift than education. The senior Kulkarni obtained his master’s degree at age19 in India before arriving in America on a Rotary International Fellowship. A professor of creative writing at Rice University, Venkatesh Kulkarni remained an example of the best that immigrants bring to this country in terms of values such as education, ambition, talent, new ideas and hard work. As a congressman, Sri will fight for these values. Sri is an effective campaigner. The changes he brought to the traditional campaign playbook by pioneering a concept called the relational organizing method of reaching voters has become increasingly popular and has been adopted by many candidates around the country including Bernie Sanders. Sri’s campaign has brought national media attention to this race, with Senators and Members of Congress going out of their way to campaign to Asian communities, and increased South Asian voter participation. Throughout Life, Dr. Madan Luthra Focuses on Practicing Conscientious Karma By Manu Shah
Houston: In 2017, Dr. Madan Luthra retired from a long and successful career in Biomedical Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center (UTMDACC), Houston, only to move to the frontlines of community service. He volunteers as a core lead in the Case Management division of the Family Services program of Sewa International, a Hindu faith-based nonprofit that helps local communities. As one of the program initiators in Houston, Madan and his team step in “like a family member” to help those coping with emergencies, accidents, medical issues, death and bereavement and family disputes. His days are markedly different from his earlier ones. Dropping off groceries or lunches cooked by his wife Rajyalakshmi for families who have been quarantined, connecting plasma donors to COVID-19 patients or tapping Sewa’s network to find accommodation for stranded international students is all in a day’s work with him. Some days are engaged in helping grieving families with funeral arrangements and the organ donation process, setting up COVID-19 testing appointments and even navigating insurance and medical options for those unfamiliar with the process. At 73, Madan shrugs off his age, downplays his kindness and insists that he takes all the necessary safety precautions. He looks on this as an opportunity to practice “Nar Sewa, Narayan Sewa” (Serving humanity is serving Divinity.) His spiritual leanings are further reflected when he explains that he is “only an instrument and a superior power is guiding him.” In the same breath, he asks, “How can you not help at a time like this? Madan approaches life with the same kind of mindset, a trait he attributes to his upbringing, the schools he went to and life’s myriad experiences. He was born in August 1947 in the village of Jodhpur, Multan, now in Pakistan, just five days after India was partitioned. From stories recounted during his growing up years, his mother, Ram Piari Luthra fled to India with her parents and five children perilously perched on the coupler between two railway coaches for 18 excruciating hours. His father followed a few months later. The family lived in a refugee camp for almost a year before his maternal grandparents were allotted temporary agricultural land in a village called Leasriwal near Alawalpur, Punjab. It wasn’t easy “growing up as a refugee in your own country,” he says of the experience, “especially as you had to work twice as hard to be counted.” To date, the years serve as a reminder to “never make any other life feel less than yours”. Passing of Gopal Savjani and Rao Ratnala Houston: The Houston IndoAmerican community was saddened in recent days with the passing of two community stalwarts: Biotech CEO Gopal Savjani and Engineering executive Rao Ratnala. The American Society of Indian Engineers (ASIE) announced the passing of Mr. Ratnala on October 11. Ratnala came to the United States in 1962 as a student and received his MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. After project experience with Brown & Root, he founded Ratnala Engineering in the early 1980s and later expanded to become Ratnala & Bahl. The firm was one of the largest local municipal engineering consulting firms in Houston with nearly 100 employees at its peak. A trailblazer in the civic and political arenas, Ratnala was a founding member of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston, major benefactor of the American Society of Indian Engineers, and mainstay of the IndoAmerican Political Action Committee. Dr. Gopal Savjani passed away on October 24. CEO and founder of Savjani Inc. in 1990, whose principal activities included real estate leasing and financial consulting services. He is the former owner

IMMIGRATION Trump to Eliminate H1-B Lottery Washington DC: The Department of Homeland Security is proposing to effectively replace the H-1B visa lottery, the method for selecting which foreign professionals receive the coveted visas each year, with a selection process that gives priority to the jobs with the highest salaries. The proposal, which was announced Wednesday and will be opened for a 30-day comment period, was one of the expected remaining pieces of the Trump administration’s overhaul of the visa program before the U.S. presidential election. The proposal is the latest in a series of changes the administration has made to restrict access to the H1-B program. The administration has long argued that the visa program artificially depresses wages by allowing employers to hire foreign workers at lower salaries. Awarding visas to foreign professionals who
would earn the highest salaries in their fields would create upward pressure on the market overall, according to administration officials. “The current use of random selection to allocate H-1B visas makes it harder for businesses to plan their hiring, fails to leverage the H-1B program to truly compete for the world’s best and brightest, and hurts American workers by bringing in relatively lower-paid foreign labor at the expense of the American workforce,” said Acting DHS Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli. The proposed change was criticized by business groups and other immigration advocates. “This proposal will significantly disrupt the operations of many businesses by denying them access to the talent they need to grow and create jobs,” said Jon Baselice, executive director of immigration policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI are therefore the most likely contenders for the fourth spot 12. Neither KKR nor Kings XI can be a clear No.1, but there is a tiny chance (0.8%) of either of these teams making it to joint first spot The IPL 2020 season has been a very competitive one. With a team like Kings XI Punjab rising from the ashes after languishing at the bottom of the points table, thanks to five wins on the trot, things have become more interesting. The three break away teams this season have been Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. With seven teams in the running for the four play-offs berths and three teams (Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore) more than likely to seal a spot, the fight for the remaining fourth place (for which KXIP and KKR are the prime contenders as of now) could make the remaining league matches of IPL 2020 very interesting.
