Modi, Biden to Discuss Ways to Combat Terrorism during PM’s Visit
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden, during their bilateral meeting on September 24 in Washington, are expected to discuss ways to stem radicalisation and combat terrorism, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Tuesday. Modi and Biden are also expected to discuss ways to bolster defence and trade ties between the two countries, he added. “PM Modi and President Biden expected to discuss ways to stem radicalisation and combat terrorism. They are also expected to discuss ways to bolster defence and trade ties. Regional developments are also expected to figure in bilateral meeting,” Shringla said. He added, “Modi and Biden will review the robust and multifaceted ties between the India and the US. They will also deliberate on ways to further enrich India-US global partnership.” PM Modi’s visit will take place between September 22-27. During his trip, the Prime Minister is expected to visit both Washington and New York. The PM is accompanied by a high-level delegation including external affairs minister S Jaishankar and national security advisor Ajit Doval. Biden will host Modi for their
first in-person bilateral meeting at the White House on September 24. Later on the same day, Modi is expected to participate in the first in-person Quad — India, US, Australia, and Japan — leaders’ summit in Washington on September 24 being hosted by US President Joe Biden at the White House. Apart from addressing the crisis unfolding in Afghanistan, the two sides will also be working on an ambitious agenda concerning the Indo-Pacific region. Modi will later address the General Debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on September 25 in New York. In a statement just before leaving for the US, PM Modi said he will
conclude his visit with an address to the United Nations General Assembly focusing on the pressing global challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic, the need to combat terrorism, climate change, and other important issues. “I am also looking forward to meeting Vice-President Kamala Harris to explore opportunities for cooperation between our two nations particularly in the area of science and technology,” he said. PM Modi and Vice-President Harris had earlier spoken on the telephone in June this year. Harris had offered to prioritise India, in making US vaccines available in the wake of the Covid situation at that time in India. At their meeting at the White House, the Prime Minister and
Vi c e - P r e s i d e n t Harris are expected to exchange views on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest. “My visit to the US would be an occasion to strengthen the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the USA, consolidate relations with our strategic partners -- Japan and Australia -- and to take forward our collaboration on important global issues,” he said in his departure statement. He will also participate in the Covid-19 Global summit hosted by President Biden. The Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet a number of top executives of major American companies. According to news agency ANI, PM Modi will meet global CEOs in Washington DC. The Heads of Qualcomm, Adobe, First Solar, General Atomics and Blackstone to participate in the meeting. This will be Modi’s first visit to the United States since President Joe Biden assumed charge early this year. The two have met vir-

tually on at least three occasions – the Quad summit in March, the climate change summit in April, and the G-7 summit in June this year. Modi was supposed to travel to the UK for the G-7 summit where he could have met Biden, but had to cancel the trip due to the second Covid-19 wave across India. The aircraft carrying PM Modi and the Indian delegation will fly over Pakistan’s airspace to avoid Afghanistan. This is the first time that Air India One (AI1), the call sign of India’s VVIP Boeing aircraft, has been deployed for US long haul direct flight. The new Boeing B-777 aircraft Extra Range (ER300) aircraft, which was recently modified for VVIP guests of India, is also equipped with advanced defence systems. The B-777 will take 15 hours to reach the US. Since the aircraft is avoiding Afghanistan’s airspace, the flight will take extra hours for the US trip. Notably, Pakistan had previously denied permission to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Modi to use Pakistan’s airspace thrice to travel to foreign countries in 2019 after India abrogated Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. -- Indian Express, Times of India

India House Dedicates Stadium to Dr. Durga D. & Sushila Agrawal
About 125 guests from the local Indo-American community attended the stadium inauguration. The concrete for cricket pitch at the stadium was poured in 2002 and the first team to play on the grounds were the Houston Grizzlies led by Pramod Kulkarni. Funds donated specifically for the pitch came from Kulkarni and Ashok Rao. The Houston Taped Ball League also contributed to the maintenance of the grounds and was the first league to play on the field. Photos by Bijoy Dixit.
Houston: India House organized a magnificent event on Friday, September 17, to dedicate their grand stadium to Dr. Durga Agrawal and his wife Sushila Agrawal. Dr. Agrawal has played a prominent role towards building the stadium with his generous donation. The stadium has been built for the community and serves as a place for citizens to hold sporting and cultural events after sunset. Close to 125 people from the community attended the ceremony and enjoyed a memorable evening filled with live music preluding up to dedication ceremony and the lighting of the stadium which was followed by a lavish dinner. The dedication was a proud moment for everyone and was evident in the smiling faces of the guests. Executive Director India House opened the ceremony by sharing a few words about the importance of the stadium to the community. He
then invited Dr. Manish Rungta, President India House, for welcoming the guests and sharing his thoughts. Dr. Virendra Mathur, Trustee of India House, fondly spoke about Dr. Durga and their friendship which began all the way from their days in India and their collective vision for India House. He then asked Dr. Durga Agrawal along with his wife Sushila Agrawal to the stage to open the curtain revealing the sign dedicating the stadium in their names. As the curtain was opened, the stadium lights were turned on illuminating the 5.5 acre grounds. The excitement could be felt in the air as the guests broke out into spontaneous applause. Dr. Agrawal, founder and CEO of Piping Technology & Products, is a founder member and current Trustee of India House. He shared his vision of bringing cricket to USA and creating a center that is
inclusive and promotes culture diversity. He commended the great work by the India House Team in bringing their vision of serving the community a reality. Apart from being engaged in business, Durga and his wife Sushila are deeply inclined towards working for social causes. Dr. Agrawal continues to serve on many boards, to name a few: Appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the University of Houston System as Board of Regents in 2013, Dr. Agrawal continues to hold the position till 2025. Mrs. Agrawal is a tremendous support in his life and career. She serves as a strong pillar of support in all his achievements and success. The event which was beautifully decorated by the Touch of Elegance team adding sophistication
to the occasion. Live violin was played throughout the evening which created just the right ambience. Darshak Thacker of Krishna Sounds Productions provided the sound system allowing the whole crowd to enjoy the music. Bijay Dixit captured all the memorable moments on camera. Delightful appetizers and the delicious dinner from Alings in Sugarland were just what the crowd needed to end the evening with. SNB Hosting K-9 Children’s Art Contest
Houston: Southwestern National Bank will be hosting an art contest open to kids Grade (K-9) for the purpose of aiding young creators in sharing their artwork with the world. Between now and Oct. 20, 2021, Southwestern National Bank will be accepting completed artwork at all branch locations. All original artworks must be delivered to the bank and postmarked on or before the deadline contestants cannot submit their artwork electrically such as via email. Any and all electronic versions or emailed entries will not be accepted. All contestants must prepare an original, hand drawn piece of artwork fitting to the theme of “Save Mother Earth” Contestants are allowed to be inspired by other art pieces and photographic images but must not copy the piece, and the completed art pieces must not include any tracing, photographs, and/or computer-generated image artworks. The art pieces must be of the student’s own personal design, without the help or contribution of any adult or secondary person, using any medium applied by brush on a surface of 8.5” W by 11” H without framing. One submission per student with the category age group written on the back of the piece. Judged on the originality, artistry, and adherence to the theme; each art piece will be selected by
a panel of judges—comprising of local professionals and amateur artists—selected by the South-
western National Bank. All decisions made by the judges will be final, and Southwestern National Bank reserves the right to reject any entry that they deem violent, sexually suggestive, vulgar, or otherwise offensive if any explicit nature. Contestants will be notified of the results by the judging panel via email and the winners’ names and artworks will be posted to the social media pages of Southwestern National Bank following the contest. Contest winners of each age group will also receive a cash prize and all winning submissions will be displayed at Southwestern National Bank website and social media. Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda’s vision is to sow these seeds of spiritual ethics in the young hearts, for life of peace and happiness. Over 30 years now, the Bala Vihar Classes at Chinmaya Mission Houston have been inspiring our children to lead a life founded on Hindu scriptural values. The Bala Vihar academic year for 2021-22 opened virtually on September 12th to an enrollment of over 830 students. Children from Pre-K to 12th grade were excited to join these virtual classes and meet their classmates and teachers after the Summer break. In the Chinmaya Bala Vihar classes, students learn about scripture-based lifestyle using a central, age-appropriate curriculum with varied techniques of study material, storytelling, discussions, projects, and activities. 8 September 24, 2021 ENTERTAINMENT ‘The Empire’: No Game of Thrones, but Bollywood Style Epic By Shubhra Gupta When the trailer of The Empire first dropped online, many said that it looked like India’s attempt at Game of Thrones. After watching eight episodes of the Hotstar series, let me break it you, this isn’t Game of Thrones but it is a sincere attempt at exploring a new genre in the Indian OTT space. Based on Alex Rutherford’s Empire of the Moghul – Raiders of the North, The Empire begins with Babur as a 14-year-old boy who is still learning the ropes of being a royal. He is shown as a sensitive individual who believes in innate human goodness, but doesn’t shy away from slashing throats when his ‘badshaahat’ is in danger. The eight episodes chronicle different phases of Babur’s life but it takes a while to get into the right groove. Shaibani Khan, played by Dino Morea, is portrayed as the arch nemesis of the emperor who, at this point, doesn’t even have a kingdom, but all the arrogance that goes with it. Shaibani Khan is the kind of villain who addresses himself in third person, and has a God complex. The tussle between the two forms the crux of the plot for more than half the show so when their battle ends, you expect the series to follow suit. Instead, it goes on and creates new villains, which feels a little disingenuous. The Empire excels in the aesthetic department. From the intricately crafted sets, to the beautifully designed costumes, the show leaves you in awe but what it gains in aesthetics, it loses out in VFX. In a show like this, visual effects are key which is why the jarring inconsistencies in CGI appear bothersome. There are places when you are pulled in by a massive battle setup, only to lose it with one badly executed bomb blast. There are few surprises in The Empire. For example, you know who will win when Babur is up against Ibrahim Lodi in the battlefield. And there isn’t much suspense about who will be Babur’s heir but the show, nevertheless, treats it like a story that we don’t already know. The Empire feels like a sincere attempt at revisiting India’s history but it lacks emotional depth for the audience to stay invested. Love, pride, greed, jealousy makes us root for someone, and hate someone else and even though The Empire tries to establish strong relationships within its narrative, they are lost in the shadow of the crown. As many shows before this, The Empire relies a lot on expository dialogue as a means to spoonfeed the audience. You would expect a conniving character to be a little sly about their plans but you largely get what you see that takes away the from the mystery of a character’s intentions. As far as performances are concerned, The Empire tries to pitch
itself on a scale where an actor’s presence can convey his intentions but it doesn’t translate well at all times. Shabana Azmi, who plays Esan Dawlat aka Nanijaan, has an aura about her that that evokes respect for her character. It is evident that a character like her often wonders why she lives in a patriarchal world when clearly she is the smartest one around. Later in the series, Drashti Dhami’s Khanzada tries to take her legacy ahead but her authoritative dialogues sound empty, minus the iron fist.

Kunal Kapoor playing Babur has the toughest task at hand. He is required to be gentle yet ruthless, kind yet commanding, and the scenes where he growls like a barbaric assassin steal the show. Imaad Shah plays Babur’s confidant The Empire’s eight episodes feel a little too long, especially in places where there is song-and-dance. For those who have an interest in history, this show could be a mildly interesting choice, once you get past the first couple of episodes. -Indian Express
