Whirlwind Texas Interaction for Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu

By Pramod Kulkarni Houston: People of Texas are used to natural hurricanes, but not of the hmankind. India’s Ambassador to the United States conducted a whrlwind tour of Texas last week. As organized by the Consulate General of Houston under the direction of Consul General Aseem Mahajan, Ambassador Sandhu was whisked from meeting to meeting. In Houston, Ambassador Sandhu met family members of slain Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal to recall his public service and supreme sacrifice. He made a keynote speech at the IACCGH Annual Gala on Saturday night.He also interacted with community leaders at a lunch organized at the Consulate. He also visited the UH campus and held discussions with Chancellor Renu Khator. Further, he toured the NASA Mission Control Center, and held an interactive dinner with local healthcare officials. In Dallas, Ambassadir Sandhu held meetings with the DFW US-India Chamber of Commerce, paid his respects at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial of North Texas, and on National Unity Day, met with representatives of various community and socio-cultural organizations about the enduring legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. In all his interactions, Ambassador Sandhu praised the contributions of Indo-Americans. He also described India’s cooperation with Baylor College of Medicine to develop a low-cost vaccine. He also encouraged community leaders to recruit Indo-American youth who can help contribute to the economic, social and cultural growth of India.

Washington DC: Prominent members of the Indian American community hosted a Diwali event in the US Capitol Rayburn House office building on Tuesday. During the event, Indian Americans who have been elected, appointed, and nominated to public office, as well as staffers on Capitol Hill - which is the seat of the US Congress were honoured for their contributions to government service. The event that was hosted by Indiaspora, a non-profit organisation of global Indian diaspora leaders, was joined by several other important organisations including All American Diwali, Art of Living Foundation, Association of Indian Muslims of America, Dharma into Action, Global Indian Jewish
Relations Institute, Hindu American Foundation, Indian American Impact Project , JAINA: Federation of Jain Associations in North America; Jain Society of Metropolitan Washington and US-India Business Council. The dignitaries from Houston included Meena Datt, the host of the popular radio music program “Music of India”. “I certainly felt very honored to attend this meaningful and inspiring event,” Datt explained. “It was a Diwali celebration and a book launch at the US Capitol. Organized by Srimad Rajchandra Love and Care, the book is ‘Atma Siddhi Shastra’ written by Pujya Guru Shri Rakeshji” The event included remarks from
senior US administration officials, including Neera Tanden, senior adviser to President Joe Biden, who was recently named White House staff secretary, and serves as the highest ranking Indian American woman in the administration after vice-president Kamala Harris, as well as vice admiral Vivek Murthy, US Surgeon General, who spoke about the inspiration behind Diwali. “The fundamental lesson of Diwali is to recognise and remember our light and the light within others, and to focus on that. That is our charge today, in a world that has been turned upside down by this pandemic as well as a growing pandemic of polarization,” said Dr Murthy.
All four members of Congress of Indian heritage, including the longest serving Indian American in Congress Ami Bera; vice chair of the India caucus in the house of representatives Ro Khanna; Pramila Jayapal, the first Indian American woman elected to the house of representatives; and Raja Krishnamoorthi spoke about what Diwali meant to them, and their call to public service. The others too spoke at the event. “We have come a long way as a community where someone can easily say today as I do, that I am a proud Hindu American, that I am proud of celebrating Diwali, that the Hindu American culture has enriched America and the world,” said Khanna.
“I think of Diwali as a time of sustenance … the food, the lights and a community event. To find sustenance in the things we grew up with which make us who we are today, and that is why the work of Indiaspora is important,” said Jayapal. “It’s time to run for office…we will be rooting for you and supportive of you. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it matters that you ran for the right reasons - to serve the community,” Krishnamoorthi said. IAA: Singing Together -- Qawaali & Gospel
Houston: The Indo American Association of Houston (IAA-Houston) certainly broke barriers last month by hosting the first collaboration between two Houstonbased power houses, Riyaaz Qawaali and The Jones Family Gospel Singers. Singing Together – Qawaali and Gospel was a three-part series consisting of a Masterclass, a Race Dialogue and a concert with two diverse ensembles. Sheetal Bedi, Executive Director of IAA-Houston, acknowledged that this project was made possible in part by a City Initiative grant from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs through the Houston Arts Alliance, the Texas Commission on the Arts and ongoing support of IAA patrons. The Singing Together series opened with a very interesting and interactive Masterclass “Appreciation of Music Genres” on October 24th at the TBH Center. The Race Dialogue “Living in Harmony” on October 27th at MECA Houston
featured a distinguished panel of experts, moderated by Dr Anita Wadhwa, Restorative Justice Coordinator Consultant. Panelists included Dr. Vida Robertson, Director of Critical Race Studies, University of Houston, Kristi Rangel, Public Health Education Chief, Houston Health Department and Dr Sucheta Choudhuri, Center for Critical Race Studies, University of Houston. Artists, Sonny of Riyaaz Qawwali and Dr. Bishop Fred Jones of the Jones Family Singers also participated in the dialogue and discussed their experience and strong connection between the two ensembles as a result of the shared space and artistic collaboration. The finale was the spell-binding concert on October 29th at Discovery Green by Riyaaz Qawaali and the Jones Family Singers. The spell binding concert kept the diverse audience enthralled and many could not stop swaying, dancing and clapping with the beat. You could feel the artist’s passion as the music came from within.

The increasingly larger participation of non-Indian American neighbors, along with Indian Americans throughout the area, has made the Diwali Mela an event many look forward to each year.

Batsmen Fire India to Massive Victory vs. Afghans in Must-win Game
Abu Dhabi: It is extremely difficult to look for anything that might have been different to India’s batting when compared to the previous two games. They had no leftarm swing, no extreme pace, no mystery spin to tackle here. The only real challenge for them was Rashid Khan, and even he would be half as effective given no support for him. As it turned out, Afghanistan opened the bowling with an offspinner against two right-hand batters, something you would never ever voluntarily do if you were at full strength. Mohammed Nabi might have got out of that first over with just seven runs conceded, but Sharafuddin Ashraf, who hardly turns his left-arm orthodox deliveries, was treated like an offspinner by KL Rahul. In just the first two overs of spin, India had hit three fours and a six; in 16 overs of spin in the previous two matches they had managed a total of three fours and no sixes. Hamid Hassan bowled an excellent sixth over for just one run, which started a brief period of clawing back for Afghanistan. In the ninth over, though, Rahul ended a 20-ball boundary drought by helping a wayward Sharafuddin delivery down the leg side. Rahul and Rohit opened up again, and crucially they took down Rashid too. Rashid dealt almost exclusively in wrong’uns, and both the batters looked to hit him into the
fourth win in four games against Namibia. With one foot in the semi-final already, and having an opportunity to tick off some other boxes before the knockouts, Pakistan did exactly that by opting to bat first, putting on a total of 189, and then defending the score with ease.

Playing together in limitedovers cricket for the first time since 2017, Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin worked in partnership. With two right-hand batters in the middle, Jadeja was brought on first, but he struck in his first over to bring in a left-hand batter
for Ashwin, who went on to take out the other right-hand batter first with a carrom ball. When he got rid of Najibullah Zadran, too, Afghanistan were staring at a highly damaging defeat at 69 for 5. Nabi and Karim Janat then played out the bowling till the start of the death overs, and then managed some quick runs to add 57 off 38 for the sixth wicket. Even though Nabi didn’t bat till the end, Janat ended up with 42 off 22 to take Afghanistan to 144, runs that might still prove crucial for one of the three teams. Pakistan’s 45-run win over Namibia has now confirmed their final-four spot, leaving only Scotland in their path to a 100% groupstage win rate. It was Pakistan’s first time winning a game while batting first in this tournament. Their captain Babar Azam mentioned that as their main objective at the toss and he backed his words up with a 49-ball 70 as well. His opening partner Mohammad Rizwan complimented him with 79. And an all-round bowling effort saw them cruise to victory. The only box Pakistan did not tick was in testing their bench strength. Mama’s Punjabi Recipes
Besan da Halwa
(GRAM FLOUR PUDDING) Besan da halwa (gram flour pudding) is as Punjabi as you can get as this is one of the favorite sweets eaten during the cold winter months and especially during the festivals. The aroma of chickpea flour roasting in ghee fills the whole house and this is an important indication that the chef knows what he or she are doing: if the besan is left undercooked, it will give a raw, gritty taste. Besan (roasted gram flour or garbanzo flour or chickpea flour) is a flour that is commonly used all over India to make pakoras or fried fritters, a common Indian comfort food. Besan is also used to make kadhi, boondi (besan fried drops), laddus (sweet balls), besan ki barfi (sweetened flat cake) or poode (salty pancakes). After wheat, besan is the second most often used flour in Indian cuisine, though it is used only in a few dishes which are made sweet. Besan is high in carbohydrates and somewhat high in protein and has no gluten, which makes it not suitable for those trying to lose weight (especially when it is fried). Besan is rich in folate, iron, magnesium and phosphorous as well as thiamin and vitamin B6. Besides these attributes, besan also makes an excellent scrub and mask for skin care and can also help in fighting seasonal allergies during the cold months. Both besan and sooji (semolina) need a lot more water than atta (wheat flour) when being prepared as the grains soak it up. This is why, if you prefer a thinner halwa, just increase the water by one cup. Ingredients: • 1 cup besan (coarse gram flour) • 1 cup peessi hui chinni (powdered sugar) • 1 cup tael (vegetable oil) or ghee (clarified butter) • 3 cup pani (water) • ½ tsp illachi (cardamom) powder • Mewah (dried fruit) to taste: 1 cup badam (almond) and piste (pistachios) pieces or blanched Directions: 1. To make the chasni (syrup), bring the water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Pour in the sugar and illachi powder, stirring till they are completely dissolved. Keep the mixture to the side for later use.
