Historic Drive-Thru “Virtual” Iftar 2021 with 3,000 Meals Handed Out

Houston: Karachi, Istanbul, Baku, Baku, Basrah, and Abu Dhabi Sister City Associations along with the Houston Mayor’s Office of Trade and International Affairs, the Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH), the Ismaili Council for Southwestern US, Dawoodi Bohra Mosque, Helping Hand USA & many Collaborating Organizations organized the 2nd “Houston Virtual Iftar Program & Dinner Pickup” with the Mayor of Houston on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the Bayou City Event Center. Historic number of almost 3,000 Iftar dinners were professionally placed in the cars of the pre-registered Guests. This is estimated to be one of the largest Drive Thru Iftars of USA. Houston Iftar is a two decades old tradition of the city, where many Muslim Organizations with Muslim & Non-Muslim Volunteers coming together to have the Evening Meal with the Mayor of Houston, whose office fully facilitate in the organization of the event. Year 2020 saw full-blown COVID-19 pandemic that has continued into 2021 Ramadan. As such last year was the 1st and this year the 2nd Virtual Iftar; which is the continuation of the 20+ years of tradition. Last year more than 2,000 meals
were given, while this Year 2021, about 3,000 meals were given out, making it a record occasion for the Houston Ifar with the Mayor. As always, delicious Iftar Dinner was catered by Tempura, Fadis’ & Sweet Factory. On arrival, Honorable Mayor Sylvester Turner greeted all the volunteers preparing the meal; and then went out at the driveways to place boxes of meals in the cars of several pre-registered guests, as they came through the enlisting point. Mayor personally spoke to the people in the car, gave them greetings of Ramadan, and asked for their wishes & prayers for the City and everyone. Earlier Honorable Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Honorable Congressman AL Green, Honorable City of Houston Councilperson Letitia Plummer, Honorable Council of Sugar Land Councilperson Naushad Kermally, Honorable Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, Honorable Consul General of Pakistan Abrar Hashmi of Pakistan, and several notables & volunteers diligently served the pre-registered guests by placing boxes of meals in their cars, and conveying their best wishes For their utmost 100s of hours of services of all the volunteers, Hon Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Hon Congressman AL Green

Worldwide Travel Restrictions to India London: With the number of Covid-19 cases in India on an upsurge, the international community is drawing the line when it comes to travel from here. According to the UK, the decision to put India on the travel “redlist” was a result of detecting 103 cases of a coronavirus variant first identified in India. On Sunday, Hong Kong imposed a two-week flight ban from India citing a similar reason pertaining to a mutated strain of coronavirus coming out of India. In addition to this, jurisdictions are also expressing concern at the sheer number of Covid-19 cases emerging in India. The US CDC’s advisory came alongside it updating India’s Covid-19 assessment from Level 3 to Level 4, which is
the highest level on its scale. As of Tuesday 8 am, India had 20,31,977 active coronavirus cases, an increase of 1,02,648 cases from the previous day. As per the UK government norms, if you arrive in the UK from India before 4 am, Friday April 23 local time, you must self-isolate for 10 days in the place you’re staying and take a Covid-19 test on day two and day eight. However, from 4 am, Friday April 23, if you have been in India in the previous 10 days, you will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British, Irish or thirdcountry national with residency rights. Even in this case, you will need to quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel.

Green Carders Stuck in India Need to Prove US Ties
Haridwar: : Immigration attorneys are facing a host of queries from green card holders, stuck in India either owing to travel restrictions or personal exigencies – such as their own illness or that of close relatives. In many cases, inquiries are being made on behalf of parents, who were visiting India and the pandemic put their travel plans to the US in complete disarray. A green card holder who has been outside the US, for more than 180 days but less than one year, has to prove that he or she has not abandoned permanent residence in the US. For those who have spent more than a year outside the US, it is tougher – it results in automatic loss of legal permanent residence (LPR) status, unless steps were taken prior to departure to prevent this loss of status. The large number of such queries received by immigration attorneys, has perhaps prompted the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) to put out a use “If the absence from the US is less than a year, we are advising them to travel back as their residence in the US is not presumed to be ‘abandoned’. Even when travelling within the year, it is important that the green card holder should be able to prove that he or she is a resident of the US. Ties to the US can be shown with the help of rent receipts, property tax receipts, valid driver’s license, financial evidence of continued US ties, such as US tax returns, banking records, to name a few. It is also important that they can show that their stay in India (or any other foreign country) was tempo-
rary,” states Poorvi Chothani, immigration attorney and managing partner at LawQuest. “With respect to green card holders who have been outside for more than a year, they should first try to apply for the returning resident or SB-1 visa. On the ground level, obtaining an appointment at the US Consulate during the pandemic can be challenging. Even pre-Covid, the US consulates have not been very generous in issuing SB-1 visas,” explains Cyrus D Mehta, founding partner of an immigration law firm in New York. Chothani illustrates a case where a client could not travel within 180 days because she was down with a bad case of Covid, and then as a sole caregiver had to attend to her mother – a very senior citizen who had also contracted this virus. This client had prudently maintained evidence of her attempts to travel during the early days of the pandemic, and preserved her medical records and those of her mother. She can prove ties with the US as she has a residence in America, while she is a widow her children are in the US, she also has American investments which bring her a good income. Preparations for applying for an SB-1 visa for this client are underway. Rajiv S. Khanna states that last
month, the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a reminder to the airlines to let people board as long as the green card date has not expired. Any queries regarding boarding can be directed to the concerned CBP officials and the passenger can be allowed to board. “I anticipate that a judgement about the status of their green card (if the stay outside the US is over a year) will be made in what is referred to as ‘secondary inspection at a US port of entry. CBP is likely to take into account the involuntary nature of absence from the US,” explains Khanna. “Thus, if the green card holder cannot obtain the SB-1 visa, and the green card date has not expired, they can still try to board a flight and assert that they have not abandoned their green card at the US port of entry,” adds Mehta. “The US courts have provided a test regarding green card abandonment, which is quite generous. Even if the green card holder has been outside the US for much longer than a year, the key question is whether they consistently harboured an intent to return to the US and continued to maintain ties with the country. Under the law, the government has a very heavy burden to prove that the green card holder has abandoned that status. During Covid, a green card holder who has been away for more than a year still has a good chance of being allowed entry if this person otherwise kept ties with the US,” states Mehta.

Meet Bob Balaram, Chief Engineer for Ingenuity Helicopter on Mars
Houston: National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (Nasa’s) Ingenuity Mars helicopter, designed by IIT alumnus J (Bob) Balaram, successfully flew early Monday becoming the first powered and controlled flight on another planet. The US space agency hailed the achievement as “our Wright brothers moment.” Bob Balaram, Ingenuity’s chief engineer, said the helicopter was in fine fettle following the maiden run, according to news agency AFP. “She’s even healthier than she was before this flight -she shook off some of her dust that had been covering the solar panels, and is in fact producing even more solar energy than before,” he said. The four-pound (1.8 kilogram) rotorcraft lifted off at 3:34 am Eastern Time (0734GMT), rose to a height of 10 feet (three meters), swiveled its tissue-box-sized body, swayed in a gentle Martian breeze and then touched down after 39.1 seconds. Data and images from the flight were transmitted 173 million miles (278 million kilometers) back to Earth where they were received by Nasa’s array of ground antennas and processed almost three-and-a-half hours later. “We can now say that human beings have flown a rotorcraft on another planet,” MiMi Aung, the project manager, told her team after the flight as she stood in front of giant wall art that read “DARE

J (Bob) Balaram, the chief engineer behind the helicopter sent to Mars, is the principal member of technical staff at the Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he is with the Mobility and Robotic Systems section. Balaram, the recipient of two Nasa Awards and eight New Technology awards, has led design teams for developing Mars aerobot (aerial robot) perception
systems, a deep-diving Venus balloon gondola concept, and balloon-carried imaging sondes for deployment at Venus, according to the space agency. As a child, Bob Balaram was inspired by the Apollo Moon landings as he developed an interest in space exploration, Nasa said, and revealed that even before an interviewer finished the question about Mars helicopter, “Did anyone ever
tell you this was a crazy idea?” Bob Balaram jumped in to say, “Everyone. All the time.” He received his Ph. D. in Computer and Systems Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Tamil Nadu Foundation’s 2021 Thirukkural Recital Competition
Houston: Tamil Nadu Foundation’s Houston Chapter conducted the annual Thirukkural recital competition successfully on April 10th and April 11th. Due to prevailing Covid 19 pandemic, TNF Houston Chapter hosted the event this year also virtually via online Zoom sessions. 21 students ranging in age from 41/2 till 18, participated in the competition. Based on age, contestants were grouped in 4 different competition categories. (Mazhalai, Level 1, Level2 and Level 4). Additional bonus points were awarded to Mazhalai and Level 1 contestants for reciting the Thirukkural along with Tamil meaning. Similarly, Level 2 and Level 4 participants were awarded bonus points for reciting the Thirukkural in order along with Tamil meaning, Kural number and Athikaram number. All 21 participants worked very hard with lots of enthusiasm and interest. Within such a short notice, they prepared and recited 1651 Thirukkurals diligently with meaning. Judges Selected the top 5 winners in order: (1) Vidya Kandasamy (2) Aditi Arvind (3) Vani Kandasamy (4) Aadhisudhan Minor Vellapandi (5) IshaJyothi Prabhaharan. For the last few years, TNFHouston Chapter implemented

TNF-Houston Chapter expresses its gratitude and deep sense of appreciation to all the judges for this competition. TCC Winter 2020 Tournament: Powerstars Winners, Cougars Runners Up
Houston: Powerstars were crowned as the champions of TCC Taped Ball Winter 2020 on March 13, 2021 defeating Cougars by 10 wickets thereby claiming their first Championship in TCC Taped Ball Tournament in their 1st final. It was a highly competitive tournament played between 24 teams. It was a repeat of the Finals from Fall 2020 with Cougars and Powerstars (playing as CSK) clashing horns yet again - after overcoming high quality teams by the former and an unbeaten run through to the championship game by the latter setting up a tasty clash. The toss was won by Cougars on a cloudy morning, and they decided to have a bat and utilize the scorecard pressure, which they are famous for. They got off to an inauspicious start losing 2 wickets within the first 5 balls of the game, Swaroop CK to an unfortunate misunderstanding leading to a runout at the nonstriker’s end and their talismanic captain Ashwin T caught behind off Sriram. The second over from Ramsai yielded more success for the Powerstars as they collected another priced scalp off Aravinth aided by a brilliant diving catch at mid-off by Arun. Powerstars added 3 more wickets within the first 6 overs to leave Cougars rocking at 6 for 11 runs, with Sriram and Ramsai adding to their wickets tally. Then came the “la resistance” from the Subbu and Happy Singh who put on a solid 50 run partnership in a quick time spanning from the 7th to the 15th over
to give Cougars a fighting chance. Subbu batted with a mix of patience and aggression to top score with 32 before being castled by Raj Nair, with Happy providing the perfect foil with a cameo of 24. After the partnership was broken by Karthik VC, the last few wickets fell quickly with Powerstars coming back into the game to take complete control with brilliance in the field from Prasanth Manne behind the stumps and Arun Sriram in the outfield. Cougars were halted for a subpar total of Powerstars -- Winners 77 with Sriram and Ramsai picking up 3 wickets each, supported well by Adithya who ended with 2 wickets. In defense of their total, the usually disciplined Cougars bowling was met by a 33 minute blitzkrieg in the form of Prasanth Manne (40 not out in 28 balls) and Raj Singh (32 not out in 24 balls) to wrap up the 1st championship for Powerstars in double quick time, 12 overs and 10 wickets to spare. They played some outrageous Cougars -- Runners Up shots attacking from ball one and put the bowlers and Kalyan Chivukula, both kept under immense pressure. The game was followed by a well-organized presentation ceremony hosted and facilitated by Jagadish Biradar of TCC where Ashwin Ravi, captain of Powerstars received the championship trophy and Ashwin Tandon, captain of Cougars was awarded the runners up trophy. Prasanth Manne was awarded the Finals MVP for his batting and keeping exploits on the day of the Finals. Ronald Robinson was awarded the tournament MVP from Powerstars for his all-round performances tallying up to 289 runs and 13 wickets Tournament awards were also presented during the presentation ceremony. Hiren from JCC was best batsman with 287 runs. Ojas from BHCC was the best bowler with 17 wickets. Saad from Champions CC II was best allrounder with 137 runs and 10 wickets. Syed from Champions CC with 14 catches and 3 stumpings and Ramesh from Powerstars with 17 catches were best wicketkeepers. Mumbai Cop Implicated in Failed Plot to Bomb Ambani Residence
Mumbai: India’s National Investigating Agency (NIA) officials investigating the Ambani terror scare case say they are now getting a clearer picture of an initial plan allegedly hatched by arrested cop Sachin Waze before a Scorpio filled with gelatin sticks was placed outside the residence of industrialist Mukesh Ambani on February 25. The NIA has learnt that 62 unaccounted bullets, which they found during a search of Waze’s residence, were likely meant to be given to two history sheeters who were to drive a vehicle with explosives to the Ambani residence as per this original plan. The agency had also found the passport of one of the two people they believe were meant to drive a stolen Maruti Eeco vehicle to the Ambani residence. As per the original plan, the duo were to be gunned down by Waze, after which he would claim the case was solved. An officer said, “We are verifying if the 62 unaccounted bullets that were found at Waze’s Thane residence were to be given to the two persons. There is no reason why he should have this ammuni-

The agency suspects all these bullets were linked to the original plan that did not go through as Waze was too hard pressed for time with high-profile investigations on his plate to work out the details. The agency is also investigating the timing of the incident. “The Scorpio vehicle was placed outside the Ambani residence on February 25, a week before the budget session of the Maharashtra
government was to begin. We are trying to find out why Waze was in such a hurry that he decided to drive the vehicle himself to execute the plan just a week before the session.” On Friday, Waze filed an application before the special court seeking permission to speak to his lawyers on the phone for 20 minutes. His plea said that “prevailing circumstances are crucial for which the accused needs to instruct his lawyers for effective representation so as to explore his legal remedies before various fora”.

Indo-American Charity Foundation (IACF) Walkathon 2021: “I Walk-We Care”
Houston: Indo-American Charity Foundation (IACF) will host its annual walkathon on Sunday, May 6. at Lost Creek Blvd. in Sugar Land, Texas. Masks will be provided and participants should maintain social distancing. For the past 32 years, IACF has appealed to the philanthropic spirit of Indian Americans to address needs in the areas of Education, Family, Healthcare and General welfare in the Greater Houston area. Our motto is “We live here,
we give here”, and our mission is to foster the local community whose basic needs are met and where everyone can lead enriched lives. We have been providing scholarships to high potential college bound students with financial needs, supporting local charities engaged in improving the STEM education for students in inner city schools, assisting abused women and children, feeding the homeless and needy, and providing free medical clinics and vacPlace a number in the cinations. IDA Houston is a non-profit, networking forum for physicians of Indian origin to provide mentorship in academic excellence, patient care & promote health education for the Greater Houston community. IDA is one of the largest chapters of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. It has been recognized by the Harris County Medical Society as a member of the Council of International and Affiliated Societies. The IDC Charity Clinic provides medical screening and testing for diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, anemia, thyroid, osteoporosis, urinalysis, vision screen, dental screen, colon and prostate cancer screens.
