2 December 18, 2020 COMMUNITY TIME Magazine’s First Ever “Kid of the Year”: Gitanjali Rao New York: Young Indian-American scientist Gitanjali Rao, TIME magazine’s first-ever ‘Kid of the Year’, has said she is brainstorming about solutions for the effective vaccine distribution to address a pressing challenge posed by the coronavirus, and has set her sights on preventing future pandemics. In an interview with PTI, the 15-year-old inventor said she was focused on using technological tools to offer solutions for vaccine distribution, a challenge that confronts the world grappling with the deadly Covid-19 pandemic. Rao was named by TIME magazine this month as the first-ever ‘Kid of the Year’ for her “astonishing work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying”. She was selected among over 5,000 nominees for the honour. “I definitely do want to look at the pandemic. The next biggest problem we’re going to face is vaccine distribution and prioritisation. So I’m looking at my potential data and analytics approach towards that,” Rao said. “But I think the next biggest problem that I’ll probably look towards solving is preventing future pandemics from happening because I think it’s safe to assume that this isn’t the last one and we probably will have another one be-
fore 100 years,” she said. Rao says she is still at a “brainstorming and observing” phase but is looking at the whole idea of vaccine distribution and how widespread it needs to be. “Also, how important it is because everybody needs to receive this vaccine. So I’m looking at how we can use predictive analytics and data models in order to create a plan of how vaccine distribution will roll out,” she said. TIME had said in its profile that “exceptional leadership” is what made the “brilliant” Rao stand out for the honour. “Rao not only researches scientific tools such as artificial Founder: Dr. K.L. Rao said it was very “exciting” to be named Kid of the Year “but more than that it’s honoring and humbling to be that face of Generation Z as well as have the opportunity to be featured on the cover of TIME among so many other fantastic people. I’m so beyond humbled and I’m just excited to see where this keeps going”.

Rao has also been working tirelessly on creating a community of innovators and has so far mentored thousands of students. She runs workshops for students from across the globe who want to become innovators and solve global problems. “Everyone comes out of that workshop with one solution and a process that they can take to implement it in the real world. If I can do it, you can do it and anyone can do it,” she says. Rao says she is interested in working on several things in the future and wants to look at genetic research with product design involved. “Hopefully whatever I’m doing, I’m changing the world for the better,” she said. For Rao, her own passion right now is working on solutions for the contamination of natural resources. “I’m looking at water contamination specifically and water parasitic contamination is the biggest problem that I’m seeing out there today. I really want to find a way to prevent that from happening,” she said, adding that she is using genetically engineered microbes to detect parasites in water. “I’m using living things to find living things which I think is a very interesting concept,” she said -- Times of India

Cleveland, Texas: Two teenagers, a 14-year-old and a 19-yearold, were killed Saturday in a violent, multi-vehicle crash in Celeveland while on their way home with their parents. At approximately 6:45 p.m., the family was in a Toyota Camry stopped in traffic due to a vehicle fire on Interstate 69 near the San
Jacinto River when a commercial van slammed into the back of their vehicle before clipping a Chevrolet Tahoe nearby. Following the impact, the Toyota Camry spun into the right rear of a pick-up truck. Both teenagers had been sitting in the backseat of the Toyota Camry, which sustained major damage in the crash. One teenager was
pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to a hospital, where they later died. Their father, the Toyota Camry driver, and their mother, another passenger, were released from the hospital overnight. The crash occurred across the street from the family’s business. -- Click 2 Houston.

“Torbaaz” Movie Review: Sloppy Execution Mars Sanjay Dutt Film By Shubhra Gupta Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Rahul Dev, Nargis Fakhri Director: Girish Malik Rating: One and a half stars A refugee camp is the unlikely site for the formation of a rag-tag cricket team. To use the healthy competition sports engenders, in order to vanquish hatred, is a great idea. But consistently sloppy execution mars Torbaaz, slinging it into the category of films-thatcould-have-been-something. Reeling under personal trauma, Nasser (Dutt) fetches up at a picturesque yet ragged spot somewhere in the hilly reaches of Afghanistan. He is in search of a healing touch. And he discovers the very thing that can help, not just him,
Groovy Coolie No. 1 Song: “Mummy Kassam”
but a bunch of refugee children, hurting from physical and emotional wounds. The film uses the reallife fact of children used as suicide bombers as a crucial plot point. We see mujahideen outfits hiding out in the wilderness, headed by fanatical leaders, training these kids. The bearded leader (Dev, who must be tired of playing similar parts) of one such gang, using the sing-song style we are used to hearing in the movies, talks up the joys of ‘shaheedi’ and
‘jannat’, as we see blasts going off in cities, smoke billowing out, and bloody limbs strewn on streets. Global conflict and its fall-out has long been the subject of powerful cinema. And when innocent children are involved, it is easy to create stories that tug at your heart-strings. There are a few uplifting moments when you see the kids just being kids, running and leaping with joy on the makeshift pitch. One particular bright young fellow stands out, as he has formed a special bond with the grizzly Nasser, as the latter goes about bashing his team into shape: who will win, and what will that win mean for these kids? The film’s end credits tell us that many members of the Afghanistan cricket team have emerged from similar tough circumstances. This could have been such an inspiring tale, but the loose plot, chock full of colourless characters, meanders minus focus. -- Indian Express
Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan’s Coolie No 1 will release on December 25 on Amazon Prime Video. Composed by Tanishk Bagchi, “Mummy Kassam” is a loud, unapologetically corny ‘mass’ song with groovy music and forgettable lyrics.

“A Call to Spy”: Radhika Apte-starrer is Un-showy and Un-bombastic By Shalini Langer Cast: Sarah Megan Thomas, Radhika Apte, Stana Katic, Linus Roache, Rossif Sutherland Director: Lydia Dean Pilcher Rating: Four stars, Streaming on Amazon Prime A Call to Spy is a rare World War II film that doesn’t seek to strike awe and fear — the requisites now to win battles. Quite in character with its heroes, a group of largely unheralded women spies (“the headless”, as they were called) who helped Resistance efforts in a France occupied by Hitler’s Army, it is un-showy and un-bombastic, populated by little people meeting their little deaths, not with big, big bangs but with big, big hearts.
For us, in the subcontinent, of course, A Call to Spy is vital as one of the people it shines light on is Noor Inayat Khan, born to an India-born Sufi mystic and a British mother, who was picked for her wireless abilities, placed in one of the toughest posts during the war, and was commended for bravely holding onto it till the end. Director Pilcher, associated with films like Queen of Katwe and The Reluctant Fundamentalist which also dealt with worlds where cultures meet freely, uses Apte well in the role of Noor, not overplaying or undermining her Eastern ancestry — placing the talented actor shoulder-to-shoulder among her contemporaries. The film, however, belongs to
Thomas, who wrote the film, produced it and stars as Virginia Hall, who made her way into history courtesy the network of agents she helped establish behind enemy lines. A freak accident having left her with a leg amputated below the knee, Hall makes her way into the F Section of the British Special Operations — operating out of 13, Baker Street — because her disability means America won’t let her become a diplomat. Thomas radiates quiet and dignified courage, especially required of a woman who must mollify male egos while making her way through uncharted territory. It is this undeniable quality that earns Thomas the trust and friendships she needs to build a network

right under the noses of a ruthless and keenly watching Gestapo Army. Pilcher does well to bring out several of these friendships, especially in the light of the risks these run. A doctor (Sutherland) who is Virginia’s initial contact is just one of the men and women
who keep the Resistance burning, with A Call to Spy heartwarmingly acknowledging the same. Katic plays Vera Atkins, a Romanian Jew who is on paper a mere secretary but who is actually running the women spies
for the British Special Operations. A statuesque actor, Katic’s Atkins is one character, battling her own odds and fears — including a male colleague’s instruction that the women be “pretty” — who could have done with some fleshing out. It’s a question the film raises — whether those behind the desk are doing their bit as much as those in the field. A Call to Spy wants the answer to be yes, but falls somewhere at a maybe. -- IE

TCC Premier Tournament Fall 2020: Cougars Winners, CSK Runners Up
Winners: Cougars
Houston: Cougars were crowned as the champions of TCC Taped Ball Fall 2020 on November 21, 2020 defeating CSK by 5 wickets in a very tightly contested low scoring match thereby claiming their eighth Championship in TCC Taped Ball Tournament in their 12th final. They now have the highest number of Championships. This was the first final for CSK. It was a highly competitive tournament played between 21 teams and both the teams came up with spirited performances in the playoffs winning some close matches to reach the finals. CSK won the toss on a cloudy Saturday morning and elected to bat first in overcast conditions. Cougars opening bowlers gave a great start with Krishna (2 wickets in first 2 overs ) by taking out the prize wicket of Adi in the first over to a great diving catch from Subbu. During early wickets, Arun and Ashwin built a stable partnership
Runners up: CSK
but Arun’s runout in 8th over from a superb direct hit from Chaitanya changed the game as Arun was in good touch. CSK slipped from 43-3 in 8 overs to 43-6 in 10 overs. Ashwin played steadily and ran out of partners. Remaining CSK batsmen were not able to score big due to relentless bowling from Cougars and the total was 88 for 9 in 20 overs. Saravana led the attack with a brilliant spell of 3-1-5-2 and was well supported by all the bowlers with Aveg and Krishna both picking two wickets each. Overall, it was a top-class bowling and fielding performance by Cougars. Chaitanya from Cougars had a great day in the field with three catches and one runout. For CSK, Ashwin Ravi (22*) and Arun (21) were the top scorers and supported by Ramesh (10) and Chirag (12). With a tricky target of 89 to chase, Cougars lost their openers Chaitanya and Prashant within
first 4 overs. The run out of Cougars captain Ashwin in 5th over put pressure on Cougars batsmen as required run rate slowly started climbing with CSK bowlers putting in a spirited performance. When Swaroop and Sree fell in 11th over to bring score at 38-5, the pressure started mounting in the Cougars camp. Subbu and Aveg built a great partnership from there. Initially they kept the score ticking with sensible batting and then opened with beautifully scoring shots all around the ground. The memorable unbeaten partnership was a match winning 53 runs in 40 balls. Aveg finished the chase with two successive boundaries in 18th over to complete the chase and Cougars became deserving champions amid joyous celebrations. Subbu (25* of 25 with 4 fours), Aveg (23* of 15 with 3 fours) and Swaroop (15) were the main scorers. For CSK, Asad led the at-
tach with 2 wickets and was supported by Ramsai and Karthik with one wicket each.
