Bollywood Shake Crowns 2015 Teen, Miss & Mrs. Bollywood USA at Stafford Centre
STAFFORD: Bollywood Shake hosted its 3rd Annual Bollywood Pageant USA 2015 on Sept 6, at Stafford Performing Arts Theatre, Stafford TX. Ruchika Dias, Founder & CEO of Bollywood Shake and Pageant Director along with her organizing team (Amit Godbole, Gauri Malhotra and Nina Desai) put together a spectacular show! Raza Hasan, Bollywood Shake’s Creative Director, did an outstanding job with the fashion show choreography. Arif Memon of DMMS Productions directed the show and lighting. This year’s show included the Teen, Miss and Mrs. Bollywood Pageants on a bigger and more glamorous platform with thirty five contestants from all over the United States. This year’s competition was very tough with the beautiful, talented and intelligent contestants making the judges’ job very difficult! Judging panel included international artist Grady Long, acclaimed lawyer from NYC Seema Singh, Realtor Shaneel Mitha, business entrepreneur Amit Rai and Miss Houston 2014 Courtney Mae.

The show started with a performance by international artist, Grady Long, who sang the song “Pee Loon” and mesmerized the audience! This was followed by the Round 1 Introduction Round where all the con-
testants dressed in elegant formal wear gowns were introduced. Then came the talent round for the Teens who displayed their talent beautifully from dancing, playing the flute to art. Dan Nainan enter-
tained the crowd with this IndoAmerican Malayali comedy and brought the house down! The contestants dressed in clothing and jewelry by String & Thread and Palkhi sarees and jewelry

‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha’: The Talk of Town

BY VANSHIKA VIPIN HOUSTON: Stellar performances by veteran actors Anupam Kher and Neena Gupta, in their comeback play, ‘Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha’, has earned them several accolades across the US and Canada, since its first sold out event in Houston on August 7. The name of the play speaks volumes about itself. The story, beautifully written and narrated by Rakesh Bedi, is crisp and fast-paced, without a single dull moment in the almost
two-hour production. It is the story of Preetam Kumar Chopra (Anupam Kher) and Hema Roy (Neena Gupta), who were deeply in love once and had planned to marry, but fate and family had other plans. Anupam Kher is his usual fascinating self, evokes sentiments ranging from tears to laughter. Neena Gupta, playing a double role as Hema Roy (Preetam’s lover) and Nigaar (Preetam’s wife), flawlessly switches from one role and accent, depicting two very different roles with a corresponding array of emotions

in both roles. Rakesh Bedi’s sporadic appearances as a casual jogger in the park brings lighter moments into the play. The audience bursts out laughing during Bedi's short interruptions to the couple's memory lane. Rajender Singh of Star Promotions was so impressed with this play when he saw it in India that he almost immediately decided to become the national promoter so he could bring it to North America. The show in his hometown, Houston, sold out almost a week in advance and post that every city has given
excellent reviews. Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha’ keeps the audience engaged and glued in the web of wit and range of emotions and brings them down the cherished memory lane. BY VANSHIKA VIPIN HOUSTON: On September 5, Arena Theatre was buzzing and the buzz permeated the air as the legendary singer Asha Bhosle and ghazal maestro Talat Aziz performed in an enchanting concert, billed as “The Iconic Tour: A Tribute to Bollywood”. The show was organized by Rehan Siddiqi, in association with Shaks Entertainment and SK Entertainment. Rehan Siddiqi of ‘Hum Tum Shows’, has in the past, organized several successful events, by bringing in popular artists like Adnan Sami, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, Atif Aslam and Mika Singh. One of his recently successful event was the ‘Fusion 2015’ concert. Asha Bhosle, live in concert is always a transcendental experience. Ashaji, as she is fondly called, captured not just the sound of Bollywood but also its very soul. Her youthful and electrifying performance was a pleasant surprise for the audience. She fire cracked with her famous Jhumka gira re
and Piya tu ab to aaja, and the sultry chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko from ‘Yaadon ki Baarat’. The Ghazal maestro, Talat Aziz, rendered some popular songs like Zingadi jab bhi and Khoya khoya chand, taking the audience down memory lane and making them nostalgic. Ashaji and Talat Aziz thrilled the audience with some duet performances as well, and as always Ashaji whose musical prowess has been proven, brought in freshness to all melodies. The Padma Vibhushan awardee, who turned 82 this year, announced that this was her last tour. Ashaji, for the first time ever celebrated her 82nd birthday on stage, by cutting a cake. The event concluded with a standing ovation by the audience for Ashaji and Talat Aziz. HOUSTON: Janmashtami, Lord Krishna's appearance day on earth, was celebrated on Saturday September 5 at ISKCON of Houston. More than 5,000 guests attended this devotional festival. Many came donned in their finest, colorful sarees and well pressed dhotis for the biggest birthday bash. The temple grounds held a variety of entertainment for everyone. There was a booth for ladies to get elegant henna plus a children's area where kids played games and practice their artistic skills by coloring a picture of Krishna. Devotees assisted with putting tilak on guests and distributed chandan. In Guaranga Hall, the enthusiastic youth held cultural programs such as dance acts and performances relating to Krishna's pastimes. Furthermore, guests also gleamed at having the opportunity for abishek and julan of Bal Gopal deities. Next to the Gauranga Hall, free sumptuous prasadam was served to all. The pillars on the altar were draped in strands of rich colorful roses, yellow spider mums, white gladiolas and red Apples intertwined in fresh greenery with hints of baby breath. Strands of strung green limes and yellow lemons also hung above the deities. Tall 4' foot vases stood on the altar filled with green apples. Two large elephant figures stood at each side of the beautifully adorned deities. The decor accented Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava's outfit and Their ornaments. Their outfits were bedecked with sequins and jewels that every color imaginable glimmered. The deities radiated magnificently with the decor and amorous atmosphere from the many kirtans held throughout the evening. As the night went on, the crowd at the temple slowly increased for the grand midnight aarti of Sri Sri Radha Nilamadhava. Prior to the midnight arati, the ecstatic kir-
tan made everyone - both young and old, to dance happily. This was followed by a wonderful Lord Krishna’s appearance pastimes on earth described by His Holiness Gunagrahi Das Goswami. As midnight approached, devotees chanted “Nand Gher Anand Bhayo, Jai Kannaiya Lal Ki”. It became more ecstatic as the clock ticked down to midnight. Then, as soon as the curtains opened, the crowd gasped and roared at the astonishing sight of Sri Sri Nilamadhava in their night outfit which was a mix of dark green and orange jeweled beautifully. Just as they were all watching the beauty of Their Lordships, another beautiful kirtan was lead and took everyone to a new high. This lasted for another hour before the devotees slowly left the temple to honor prasadam. Harris County Judge Ed Emmet proclaimed Saturday, September 5, 2015 as Krishna Janmashtami Day in Harris County. On Sunday, August 6, the celebration continued for the Founder Acharya of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada’s Appearance day or Vyasa Puja celebration. The temple was fortunate to have several of Srila Prabhupada's disciples share their offerings and heartfelt gratitude to their spiritual master. Many including children also shared their warm wishes and gratefulness to their spiritual preceptor. A special cake was offered to Srila Prabhupada, in the shape of the ship, the Jaladuta, which he boarded to come to the west to spread Krishna Consciousness. AUSTIN: Over 4,000 devotees, from newborns to seniors, gathered at Radha Madhav Dham Temple in Austin to celebrate Shree Krishna Janmashtami. The excitement was palpable days in advance when volunteers began preparing for the grand celebrations and decorating one of the largest temples in the U.S. for the occasion. In anticipation of the festivities, hundreds arrived a day in advance and stayed overnight at Radha Madhav Dham’s beautiful facilities which overflowed in attempt to accommodate over 300 guests. As the evening approached, the crowds surged into thousands, backing up the main road leading up to the temple for more than a mile. Devotees were welcomed with dinner prasad as they arrived and food stalls selling samosa, dosa, lassi, etc. were set up for those wanting a quick snack or a light meal. The temple program started with singing of beautiful kirtans revealed by Jagadguru Shree Kripalu Ji Maharaj in praise of Lord Krishna. A jhula (decorative swing) was set up for baby Krishna and Radha Krishna deities presiding in the temple were decorated in a spectacular sixteen fold shringar. The line of devotees eager to have darshan (vision) of Radha Krishna and an opportunity to swing baby Krishna kept getting longer and longer as the evening progressed into the night and continued from 6 pm till midnight. Sushree Diwakari Devi spoke about the spiritual significance of Janmashtami. The cultural program started with hundreds of children, as young as
few months old adorably dressed as Krishna or Radha, walked alongside their parents or were cradled by their parents, as they participated in the costume contest. Children competed in four different age groups and charmed the audience in an overcrowded temple hall. After that Kathak maestro and disciple of legendary Pandit Birju Maharaj, Shree Murari Sharan Gupta enthralled everyone with a rich blend of dances presented in a pure Kathak style and vividly bringing to life the Divine pastimes and glories of Lord Krishna. Music of “Govinda ala re ala…” (Krishna is coming…) resonated the hall and peeked the curiosity of the crowd, as a team of butter thieves led by a young Krishna, approached a butter pot hanging high in air. Aided by loud cheers from the large hall that was packed with people from wall to wall, the team formed a three story human pyramid and after a couple of failed attempts finally helped Krishna break the pot. The energy and excitement kept growing as the dahi haandi (curd pot) breaking led right into raas garba. People danced in joy to the live chanting of Shree Radha Krishna’s name and enlivened by a devotional band. With only an hour to go until midnight, enchanting kirtans of Lord Krishna immersed the audience in devotion. Shortly before midnight, the sound of thun-
der and lightning filled the air and a leela (enactment of Krishna’s Divine actions) depicting Baby Krishna’s appearance and His arrival in Gokul was presented. Everyone rose to their feet and to the sounds of conches, drums, and cymbals burst into joyous outcry of “Nand ke anand bhayo….Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki” which continued for over an hour past midnight until 1:00am. Overjoyed with the exciting devotional atmosphere of Radha Madhav Dham and family centric activities of the day, steeped in tradition, culture and devotion, people couldn’t stop talking about their experience and several visitors unanimously commented “this was definitely one of the best Janmashtami celebrations we have ever attended”. BY RUNMEE BARBARA HOUSTON: On August 30, Shri Natraj School presented an enchanting evening of a dance recital at the Kaplan theatre, Houston. The program was choreographed by Kusum Sharma. The students of Shrinatraj School presented Indian classical dances of Bharatnatyam and Kathak. The age group of the dancers ranged from 4 to 35 years. The show was attended by well-wishers, friends and families of all performers. The show started at 3pm with a lovely prayer dance ‘Mooshika Vahan’ in Bharatnatyam style. The dainty dancers looked gorgeous in their pink and green costume and enthralled the audience by their sublime performance. It was followed by the Kathak performance by the 1st year junior kids. They showed some simple Kathak steps and tatkar. This was followed by tukdas and 21 spins (moving in round circles) performed by the 2nd year kids. The stage was dazzling in beautiful golden kathak costumes worn by the students. The sound produced by the ghungroos (foot bells), stomping of the foot and beats of the tabla created a beautiful flow of rhythm. The next performance was by Kusum Sharma herself on a song called ‘Aaj jaane ki zid na karo’. The live music and her graceful
dance moves captivated the audience to the core. After her dance, she explained the various emotions that were used by her facial expression and body language in the song. Every performance had a unique style and she explained about the dance techniques that were being used by her students. The show then progressed with the elegant recital consisting of tatkar, chakradhar tukdas and toras by the 3rd and 4th year Kathak students. The students took 108 spins and then continued to show versatility on “gat bhav” on an instrumental song dedicated to Lord Krishna. Lastly, they presented a candle lit dance called “Jhoothe Naina”. Shhyam Moorthy and Nikita Khambe emceed the show. They kept the audience entertained by asking Ramleela related questions. Winners of the correct answers were given free tickets for the upcoming grand musical opera ‘Ramleela 2015’. The Hindustani classical music team had Aruna Gurujada, Chandra and Veena Watve as Vocal singers, Chidanand played the Tabla (hand drum) and Ram Sharma played the harmonium. Photographs and Videography were taken care by Sri Ram and Dhawal. RITU RAJU HOUSTON: ‘Krishnaarpanam’, a superb Kuchipudi recital by 69-year young Anuradha Subramanian, an accomplished Carnatic musician was offered as homage to her mother, eminent Carnatic musician Smt. Savitri Satyamurthy and to their favorite deity, Lord Krishna on Saturday, August 22, at the Stafford Center. With a classical rendition of the invocation to Lord Ganesha, Anuradha set the stage for a performance that was as flawless and dedicated as it was intense and devoted. With the flexibility of a 16–year old, Anuradha executed the intricate steps and flourishes with perfect symmetry. From the first number, Swagatham Krishna, Anuradha enthralled the audience with elegant footwork, elaborate abhinaya, and sheer devotion. In “Venu-
gaanaloluni gana,” she presented minute details of the wistful yearning for Krishna with great grace and precision footwork. Each composition, lovingly chosen, reflected the various aspects of the esoteric nature of Krishna. The choice of composers, similarly, echoed the danseuse’s devoutness—Oothukadu Venkata Kavi, Thyagaraja, Annamacharya, and Purandara Dasa— each of whom has earned a distinctive place in the Bhakti pantheon. Anuradha delivered a brilliant exposition of the Tarangam, the most complex item in a Kuchipudi recital characterized by balancing on the rim of a plate, in “Alokaye Sri Balakrishnam.” Guru Rathna Kumar’s narration in English allowed the diverse audience to experience the majesty and mischief of Krishna’s avatar. If the bhava (emotion) in “Bhavayami Go-

pala Balam” melted the hearts of the audience even as butter melts in the warmth of one’s palm, the adaptation of the popular “Aadathu Asangadhu Vaa Kanna” captured the charm and naughtiness of Krishna with feisty footwork and expansive mudras. The Purandara Dasa Kriti “Kanden Naa Govindana“ depicting Krishna as Vishnu was exceptional. The plethora of emotions on beholding the Lord–exhilaration, awe, gratitude, bliss–Anuradha captured and portrayed them expressively. Nowhere in the performance was the instrumental support as brilliant as in this number–the musicians used the flute and mridangam to evoke the ferocity and grandeur of the Narasimha Avatar and the pathos of the disrobing of Draupadi after a deceptive game of dice. In a surprise element, her grandson Kiran
came on stage as little Krishna and sang a beautiful song with her. Clearly, we have a budding musician who will carry forward Anuradha’s musical tradition! The final Thillana was everything Dr. Balamurali Krishna would have envisaged when he composed it– energetic, spirited, elegant, and lively–with Rathna Kumar’s nattuvangam providing the perfect foil for Anuradha’s perfectly-executed mudras and lively adavus. The support from the musicians was very impressive: Srikanth’s sonorous voice and rich vocals brought the exquisite compositions to life. ‘Krishnaarpanam’ could not be completed without the melodious notes of the flute–Krishna’s chosen instrument. And Adyar Muthukumar did full justice to the divine reed; his evocative notes took the audience to the land of verdant valleys and undulating pastures where the gopis cavorted with Krishna. Kesavan’s crisp percussion, especially his use of two mridangams to produce the sounds of Narasimha Avataram and Draupadi’s Vastra Haranam, was amazing and drew sustained applause from the audience. Guru Dr. Rathna Kumar’s lively nattuvangam provided excellent backing to the recital. In sum, the musicians did everything in their melodious power to support the dancer resulting in a memorable performance. The evening served to highlight the strength of Houston’s classical dance and music landscape and the wealth of talent that our city holds. Rathna Kumar choreographed each of the dances while undergoing grave personal crisis as her husband Anil Kumar was critically ill. Anuradha, who is a musician of considerable merit, earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records in 2006 for being the oldest Kuchipudi dancer at the age of 59. The 700-strong audience (including guests from Canada, Colombia, India and various parts of the United States) was inspired and enthralled–as evidenced both by the prolonged standing ovation and by the comments of the guests. Guest of Honor Dr. Marie Goradia talked about how “dance and music have always been front and center” of Anuradha’s life and praised her for dancing “not just with her feet but also with her heart, her eyes, and her spirit.” Sugar Land Council Member Harish Jajoo presented a proclamation from the Mayor of Sugar Land recognizing Anuradha’s contribution to dance and culture. The story thus far….The war in Europe was having an impact in India. The Congress Working Committee found itself unable to accept in its entirety Gandhi’s attitude to the war. In particular, they would not accept his view that the defense of India should not depend on the armed forces. Congress leaders met on several occasions in Gandhi’s room at Sevagram and talked of their desire to start some action. Finally a proposal was put forward that all provincial governments should join with the British authorities in the defense of India, but the British rejected the offer. In September 1940, a meeting of the All-India Congress Committee was held in Bombay. There, as a protest against England’s utter indifference to India’s hopes, it was decided to launch individual civil disobedience against the authorities. It was also decided to hold meetings to protest against British imperialism. At that time such meetings were forbidden.Vinoba Bhave was the first to inaugurate individual satyagraha. He was arrested and so were hundreds of others who followed him. Nehru also was arrested. Within a few months over 30,000 Congressmen were put in jail. Only Gandhi was not imprisoned. He devoted his time to spreading the gospel of truth and nonviolence. In December 1941 the government released all the satyagrahis. Then, in 1942, as the Japanese swept across the Pacific and went through Malaya and Burma, the British began to think of a settlement with India. Japan, it was feared, might even invade India. Even Gandhi began to feel that his pacifism might stand in the way of India’s future. So he made the proposal of a provisional government so that all the resources of India could be added to the government’s side in the struggle against the aggressors. But this proposal was ignored. In March 1942 Churchill announced that the war cabinet had agreed on a plan for India and that Sir Stafford Cripps had agreed to go to India to find out whether the Indian leaders would accept the plan, and whether they would devote all their thought and energy to the defense of
India against Japan. Cripps arrived in Delhi on March 22. He met Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Maulana AbulKalam Azad, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and other important leaders. Cripps promised greater freedom than what had been offered before. He also offered complete freedom after the war, if India wanted it. The leaders would perhaps have accepted this offer if it had come a year earlier, but now it was rejected. The Congress leaders did not want any compromise based on promises. The British did not trust the people of India sufficiently to give them any real power, and so the Indian leaders felt that they could not trust the British to hand over power after the war. In August 1942 the All-India Congress Committee met in Bombay, and was presided over by Maulana Azad. Again the demand to set up a provisional government was made. “We can no longer hold back our people from exercising their will,” Gandhi said. “Nor can we go on eternally submitting to the imperialist policies. The time has come for the English to go. Civil servants, army officers, government officers all of them should quit India.” The “Quit India” resolution was drawn up and passed by the meeting for presentation to the government. Nehru moved the resolution and Sardar Patel seconded it. The resolution also announced the starting of a mass struggle on the widest possible scale. Winding up the meeting, Gandhi said, “I have pledged to the Congress, and the Congress has pledged herself that she will do or die.” The government did not wait for the mass movement to begin. Overnight Gandhi was arrested, as were many other leaders in various parts of India. Gandhi was interned in the Aga Khan’s palace in Poona. Mahadev Desai, Kasturba, Sarojini Naidu and Mirabehn were also taken there. But with the leaders in jail, India did not remain idle. ‘Do or die’ was taken up by the people. There were mass movements everywhere. And there was a great outburst of violence throughout the country. People started destroying government buildings and whatever else they considered
to be symbols of British imperialism. Shortly after his detention in the Aga Khan’s palace Gandhi suffered a grievous bereavement. Mahadev Desai, his faithful and able secretary, died of a heart attack. “Mahadev has lived up to the ‘do or die’ mantra,” Gandhi said. “This sacrifice will only hasten the day of India’s deliverance.” All over India there were strikes and disorder. Lord Linlithgow, the Viceroy, blamed Gandhi for all the turmoil. Gandhi had invited violence, he claimed. In a long series of letters to Lord Linlithgow, Gandhi tried to persuade him to retract this charge against him. Failing in this, Gandhi decided to undertake a fast as “an appeal to the Highest Tribunal” against the unjust charges. Gandhi fasted for 21 days in February, 1943. It was a great ordeal, but he survived the fast. Kasturbai nursed him back to health, but her own health was failing. She suffered two heart attacks. Gandhi tried his best to save her, but Kasturbai grew worse. One day she died quietly in Gandhi’s arms. A few weeks later Gandhi was taken seriously ill with malaria. The Indian people demanded his immediate release and the authorities, believing that he was nearing death, released him. Gandhi was slowly restored to health. The demand for Indian independence had now acquired worldwide interest. Apart from India’s own attitude, America and other countries started pressing Britain to grant freedom to India. But Prime Minister Winston Churchill did not yield to any of these approaches. India had always been the jewel in the British crown, crucial to the Britain’s prosperity. Churchill was the last man to think of giving up India. Two months after Germany’s surrender in May 1945, the Labour Party came into power in Britain and Clement Attlee became the Prime Minister. After the defeat of Japan inAugust that year, the British government announced that they expected to grant self-rule to Indiaas soon as her internal problems could be solved. This was indeeda victory for India and a victory for the principle of nonviolence. Britain agreed to a planned withdrawal from India in friendship and with no bitterness. All through his life Gandhi had worked for unity between Hindus and Muslims, without much success. There was a large section of nationalist Muslim in the Congress but leaders of the Muslim League were drifting further and further away. Gandhi was not the man to give up hope, however, and he pursued his efforts to bring about a settlement. On the other hand,Mohammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the Muslim League, was hostile to the idea of unity. — To be continued

18 September 11, 2015 Welcome Step on Oilfields The government has taken a refreshing and progressive approach with respect to the unutilised natural resources locked away in the 69 small and marginal oilfields lying with the state-owned exploration agencies. The Union Cabinet has not only approved the auction of these oilfields to private, and even foreign, companies, but also initiated a new approach in the licensing and proceedssharing mechanisms. The first step was to move from a profit-sharing mechanism to a revenue-sharing one. This may appear to be a technical difference, but the effect on the ground is likely to be huge. The profit-sharing approach meant the government had to pore over the cost details of those undertaking the exploration, often leading to extended delays and disputes. The revenue-sharing approach is simpler, and is likely to earn the government more money. Under the new plan, companies will be allowed to sell crude oil or natural gas at market prices, without any interference from the government. The revenue and royalty-sharing mechanism will be pegged at this market rate. If companies are forced to sell at below-market prices, then the government will still get a royalty share pegged at the market rate. If, however, the company manages to sell at higher-thanmarket prices, then the sharing mechanism will be pegged to this higher price. That’s a win-win for the government: less oversight and an assured minimum income. The other welcome step has to do with the licensing method. At present, companies need a separate licence to exploit each of the different hydrocarbon resources in a given field. Under the new scheme, they will receive a unified licence for all hydrocarbons, including conventional ones such as oil and gas, and non-conventional ones such as shale oil and shale gas. This goes a long way in the government’s move towards enhancing the ease of doing business. Apart from that, the simple act of auctioning oilfields is a step towards weaning India away from oil imports. The Oil Ministry says there are hydrocarbon resources worth Rs.70,000 crore lying unutilized in these fields. At the current crude price of $45 a barrel, the production of hydrocarbons from these new fields will be worth around Rs.3,500 crore a year. This may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to India’s total hydrocarbon imports of Rs.7.6 lakh crore in 2014-15, but every little drop counts. So far, these progressive steps are limited to the 69 oilfields on the block, but hopefully they will be extended to all the oilfields in the country.With growth in oil production slowing and natural gas production contracting, there is a sore need for steps like these to boost domestic production. India Must Stop Obsessing Over China BY SANJOY NARAYAN In German, Schadenfreude means ‘the pleasure that is derived from the misfortune of others’. It can be aptly used to describe Indian reactions, official or otherwise, to China’s economic slowdown, its stockmarket meltdown and the yuan’s fall. Top Indian officials, including those in charge of economic planning, have been quick to declare that a Chinese slowdown is a big opportunity for India, which, they say, can capture the export market that China may vacate; and if India can manage 8-9% growth, it can replace China as the driver for the global economy. Another German word Fremdschämen means ‘the feeling of embarrassment on account of what others say or do’, something that such declarations can make you feel. Comparing India’s economy to China’s, which Indians love to do, is quite ridiculous. Because frankly there’s no comparison. China’s GDP is $10.3 trillion or five times India’s; its annual per capita income is $7,588 or 4.5 times India’s; China’s forex reserves are at $3.9 trillion or more than 10 times India’s; and China’s exports at $2.34 trillion are seven times India’s. The truth is that China is way, way ahead of India, and no, it doesn’t matter whether our quarterly growth rate is momentarily higher than theirs. If we really want to benchmark India with China, here’s one uncomfortable comparison: China grew at 10% for 20 straight years since 1991; India managed 9% plus only for three years, 2005-08. Instead of obsessing over how to catch up with China, India should obsess about how to fix things so that its economy gets back on track. Now that we have China out of the way, here are four relatively quick fixes
There will be scores of other things that India could do to get growth back. But there’s one thing it shouldn’t do: Make unreal predictions about how its economy will beat China’s. that the government could do: One. The Seventh Pay Commission will soon recommend salary and pension increases that will benefit 10 million government servants and their households. These hikes will be effective from January 1, 2016. The pay hike this time may range between 17 and 25%. It’s a recurring cost spike that hits the exchequer every decade but the flipside is this: If the government announces the hikes in advance, people will increase spending in anticipation; and that will be good for growth. Two. Infrastructure should become the government’s emergency objective. Four out of 10 big projects, including power and roads, are delayed; the NDA government aims to build 30km of highways daily — three times what the UPA wanted but couldn’t do. If the economy has to grow, it can’t without adequate infrastructure. Besides, building infra-
structure is highly labour-intensive and can generate jobs in millions. Three. Parliament’s sessions have become confrontational and unproductive with law-making efforts thwarted by lack of consensus. The NDA government took nearly 10 months to pass the insurance Bill; the GST and land Bills are in a stalemate. India’s lawmakers have to set aside political posturing and agree to pass major Bills; to do that the overtures have to come from the government. Four. Jobs are India’s biggest problem. Nearly 15 million new job seekers are added each year, much higher than the number of jobs that are created. Modi’s new slogan — Startup India, Stand up India — could be effective here. All start-ups need not be of the tech variety. Most new job seekers are from villages where overcrowded farms are often the only source of livelihood. Funding small businesses for non-farm activities could change all that and make entrepreneurs out of India’s jobless youth. If one entrepreneur gets Rs 1 crore for a start-up that hires 10 youths, Rs 10,000 crore could generate employment for 100,000 people. There will be scores of other things that India could do to get growth back: it could avoid policy flip-flops, such as what taxes foreign investors have to pay; or what declarations individual tax-payers have to make; and it could try to monsoon-proof the economy (where farm output accounts for just 14% of GDP but 50% of employment). A presentation from Chris Bilton, Houston Director of the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) outlined the benefits the Agency offered ethnic minorities to help their business grow. Strong ethnic minority owned firms can help the US economy and MBDA, operated by Houston Community College (HCC) provides these minority owned businesses help with raising capital, contracts and consulting services. Mama’s Punjabi Recipes
Paneer ka Parantha (Indian Cheese Parantha) Punjabis love their paranthas (stuffed flat bread) with all kinds of stuffings and people are always experimenting to see what new variety they can create. The trick is not just in the stuffing, but the spices you use and then how you cook them so that you still get the crispy, buttery whole wheat taste. When we lived in London in the 60s, my kids always came up with new ideas – like sugar or grated Cheddar cheese for stuffings – and they loved to eat them hot off the tava (hotplate). It was a type of pizza before pizza became popular! Everyone is familiar with the usual paranthas: aloo (potatoes), gajjar (carrots), phul gobi (cauliflower), mouli (white radish) or piyaaz (onions). But, if you know how to prepare the stuffings right, you can make paranthas with left over daal (lentils), other veggies like bhindi (okra) or baingan (eggplant). In all cases, the secret to a good, crispy parantha is to make sure that the atta (dough) does not get too soft with the curry or moisture in the vegetable that you use as a stuffing. If you prefer spicy paranthas, add all the spice-mixture; but add salt only to each dough ball and not the entire paneer stuffing or it will shed water which makes it difficult to roll the dough out. Paneer paranthas have become quite common now too, especially in restaurants in India where paneer is used to excess in many of the prepared dishes since it is a high cost item, and brings in more money. But the paneer paranthas they usually make is in the tandoor and these don’t the same taste as the ones made on the tava, which are much softer. All sorts of paranthas can be eaten with a dollop of butter – preferably homemade white butter - placed on the hot parantha, melting into the top layer so that you dab into the drippings, plain yogurt alone or with achaar (pickles). But paneer paranthas taste much better with a curry dish, adding a subtle flavor to the meal. Ingredients : 500gm kanak (gehon) ka atta (wheat flour) 100 gm paneer (Indian cheese) 1 small piyaaz (onion) – peeled and chopped 2 tbsp tael (olive oil or vegetable oil) 1 1/2 cups pani (water)

1. Cut the paneer into smaller pieces and then mash it. Add the chopped onions, spices and pepper, mix well and keep to the side. 2. Pour the flour in a bowl and slowly pour in water while kneading the dough till it becomes a nice, tender by firm ball. Dab the surface of the ball with a little water to keep it moist, cover the bowl and set aside. The dough should be soft but not watery, if the dough is too hard, the parantha will also be hard. 3. If you want to cook later, dab the top of the atta with a small amount of oil to see the crust soft and then leave the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. You should not cook the paranthas right after making the dough as they will come out hard. 4. Break the dough into small paade (balls) and then roll out into an 8 to 10 inch circle. Now place a small amount of the paneer masala into the middle of the circle so that it can be
closed easily and does not tear when rolled out. 4.Put a small dab of oil on a hot tava (hotplate or skillet) and place the flattened dough on. When it turns color a little, turn the pancake over. Put another dab of oil on the tava and then turn it over again till it is fully cooked. The parantha will be cooked when it has some dark brown spots on it. 5.Because of the paneer these paranthas are quite soft and easy for older people to eat. Try these with butter, yogurt or a plain daal for best taste. Shakuntla Malhotra is a skilled cook of Punjabi dishes made in the old-fashioned style that she learnt as a young woman in her ancestral home in Lyallpur, India before it became part of Pakistan after the Partition in 1947. People have often admired her cooking for its simplicity and taste that comes with each mouthful. Even in her mid-eighties, she continues to cook daily and agreed to share some of her delectable Punjabi recipes.

Cooking daal can be easy or time consuming, depending on the variety of daal being made. The yellow dhuli moong and red split massar daal cook quite quickly in a regular pot; but the black mahn (urad) daal is harder to cook and takes more time. Although the mahn daal takes much longer, take care when cooking it as it will often foam over and spill out. When it foams, scrape it off with a spoon then add a teaspoon of oil and some haldi (turmeric), then let it boil till it becomes tender. This is easier than cooking in the pressure cooker, but takes a little longer.

CHENNAI: One can’t judge a book by its cover and Coimbatore resident M Chandrakumar by his day job. The 53-year-old auto-rickshaw driver who moonlights as a writer is packing his bags for the Venice Film Festival to participate in the screening of a Tamil feature film based on his novel. Auto Chandran, as he is called by locals, published “Lock Up” in 2006 that inspired director Vetrimaaran, who goes by one name, to make the movie “Visaranai” that has made it to the festival’s competition section. “I have always been observing life
which has been my teacher,” Chandran told HT over the phone. He said it was his first-hand experience of police brutality and oppression as a young man in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district that influenced the novel, his first. Chandran and two of his friends were arrested, allegedly tortured mercilessly for 13 days and later let off. India Eyes Energy Assets Abroad in Low Price Regime Firms step up acquisition efforts in wake of low crude prices and lack of competition for assets amid crisis in China BY UTPAL BHASKAR Driven by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s desire to secure energy assets in a low price regime, state-owned firms such as ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) have stepped up their acquisition efforts and inked confidentiality agreements for around half-a-dozen potential opportunities. OVL said last week it is buying a 15% stake in a unit of Russia’s OAO Rosneft, the world’s largest publicly traded oil firm, for $1.3 billion. With the agreements on the deal reached during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ufa in July, experts believe it is an example of the government’s emphasis on tapping diplomacy to secure India’s economic interests. “OVL has been given huge targets. At any given point of time, OVL is looking at a number of opportunities. It has signed a number of confidentiality agreements,” said a person aware of the development requesting anonymity. Once a confidentiality pact has been signed for a possible deal, the sellers provide access to the information regarding an asset for due diligence. These acquisitions assume significance because of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd’s (ONGC) concerns over its domestic production capabilities and diminishing yields at its ageing oilfields. According to ONGC’s Perspective Plan 2030, the company is aiming to produce more than 130 million tonnes (mt) of oil equivalent by 2030, of which half will come from assets owned by its overseas arm OVL. The petroleum and natural gas ministry led by Dharmendra Pradhan is
encouraging state-owned firms to acquire assets at a time when prices are depressed. The price of oil in the Indian energy basket has been around $50 per barrel, starting 4 August. The Indian energy basket represents the average of Oman, Dubai and Brent crude. The price was $48.70 per barrel on Thursday. While queries emailed to an ONGC spokesperson remained unanswered till press time, experts agree with the government strategy. “Broadly, three things are happening on asset acquisition front: One, given the massive correction in the crude oil prices in last 15 months, the country is saving more than $60 billion in oil imports, which gives India a huge fiscal space to make investments. Two, unlike in the past, given the global economic scenario and the developments in China in particular, there is no cut-throat com-
petition for available assets. Three, since the NDA government has come to power, there are coordinated efforts between the ministry of petroleum and natural gas, the ministry of external affairs and public sector companies to identify the right assets and go for acquisition at the right price,” said Debasish Mishra, senior director, consulting, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. Low global crude prices have helped the government bring retail inflation below 5%, improve its fiscal deficit target of 4.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) for 2014-15, and bring the current account deficit to 1.6% of GDP in January-March against 2% in the preceding three months. Thesituationis expected to further improve with the lifting of sanctions on Iran. India is heavily dependent on imports and sourced 189.43 million
tonnes (mt) of crude oil last year. “Equity oil provides protection from oil price risks, if not supply disruptions. The government is apparently emphasizing on equity oil investments, too, as a part of a concerted effort towards a larger energy security goal. The diplomatic efforts, institutional strengthening in NOCs (national oil companies) to secure interests and setting firm targets are the visible initiatives,” said Deepak Mahurkar, leader (oil and gas) at PwC India, a consultancy. As soon as the NDA assumed charge in May 2014, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj asked the oil ministry to prepare a list of areas and countries where her ministry could pitch in to help strengthen India’s energy security. According to PwC India, Indian public sector units in the energy space have a presence in more than 20 countries, with a total
investment of $13 billion. OVL has a production of 167,000 barrels of oil and oil equivalent gas per day and total reserves of around 647 mt of oil equivalent from its 36 projects in 17 countries. OVL’s target is 20 mt by 2018 and 60 mt by 2030. Speaking at Mint’s annual energy conclave on 28 August, Dharmendra Pradhan said, “We have to go for overseas acquisitions. This is the time. We have to escalate energy diplomacy.” Crude oil prices for the current fiscal averaged $59.07, $63.82, $61.75, $56.30 and $47.33 per barrel forApril, May, June, July and August, respectively. Crude oil prices in the Indian energy basket averaged at $84.16, $105.52, $107.97 and $111.89 in 2014-15, 2013-14, 2012-13and201112,respectively. Speaking at the same conclave, Soumen Bagchi, joint secretary, energy security in the external affairs ministry, said, “This is also a good time for our companies to pick up good acreages available anywhere in the world because most of the oil majors are cutting down on expenditure by 20-25-30%. Therefore, the government’s outlook and efforts are that this opportunity can be utilized in picking up good acreages around the world.” India follows the US, China and Russia in energy use, accounting for 4.4% of global energy consumption. Imports account for 80% of India’s crude oil and 25% of its natural gas requirements. Petroleum product consumption in India has also been growing. According to the oil ministry, it grew 3.14% to around 163.17 mt in 2014-15 from the previous year. -Livemint.com

IPL Obituary: So Last Season The IPL, as we knew it, had a Meteoric Life
The Format it was Created in required Living Dangerously BY DILIP BOBB There are many who will mourn its passing, including, most gleefully and digitally, its creator, currently broadcasting a ball-by-ball commentary from London. Little Modi, so as not to be confused with Big Modi, could well be tweeting Woody Allen’s famous quote: “I’m not afraid of death. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” He wasn’t and it happened, courtesy a panel of third umpires normally seen in black coats. Appropriate, since it was a black day for many related to the deceased—players, sponsors, television channels, administrators, accountants, coaches, sons-in-law, owners and co-owners, domestic airlines, five-star hotels, DJs and assorted hangers-on, not to mention millions deprived of diversions like cheerleaders and celebrities and, of course, cricket. The end was sudden and surprising, since the deceased seemed in good health despite some minor setbacks. It had appeared that physicians and spin doctors had fixed potential ailments like spotfixing, sweat equity and Lalitgate and were betting on a long innings, but clearly there were hidden complications. In that sense, the IPL, as we knew it, had a meteoric life. The format it was created in required living dangerously, for players and administrators equally. Seven years is cricket history’s equivalent of a T20 match, but entirely coincidental with Shakespeare’s seven ages of man. Like his mewling infant, it had started to turn into a spoilt brat. Initial postmortem reports suggest that the IPL’s death was due to problems with two internal organs out of the eight, both vital. Without Royals and Kings, survival was a toss of the coin. Royal and King was aptly descriptive. The IPL lived a life of extravagance and self-indulgence in full public glare. King-sized, as one owner branded himself. There was no better depiction of band
baaja baraat than an IPL lifestyle. He dressed in flamboyant clothes, threw parties at the drop of a catch, travelled to exotic destinations like South Africa, his every move was accompanied with music and cheered by blondes in short skirts and painted faces. Supporters, also with painted faces, turned up in huge numbers while giant screens flashed advertisements, hyperbole and occasionally, the score. Every season started with cricketers being auctioned for eye-popping amounts, their worth measured by a combination of statistics and sex appeal. For all those reasons, the IPL will be missed, but most of all, by the commentators, former players earning more in one season than their entire careers, accompanied by eye candy. The IPL was nothing if not democratic—opposition politicians found common ground, or grounds, moviestars got to slap policemen, Harbhajan got to slap Sreesanth, a minister had to resign over sweat equity, a commissioner was decommissioned while Srini cemented his reign and now refuses to budge like a fevicol ad. Most creditably, never have so many retirees found gainful employment and been gifted a second innings. Looking back, it was a hugely profitable marriage of commerce and cricket. Last heard, the IPL
was valued at $7.2 billion, the same as Flipkart. Now that its cart has flipped, the valuation may need some revising. We are seemingly in the death overs, and the fate of many awaits the dreaded raised finger. There’s Dhoni and Raina, Watson and McCullum, Dravid and Dwayne, Samson and Southee, Kundra and Meiyappan, and then the support staff, from masseurs to minders, transporters and terminators, brand ambassadors and band masters and oddballs like Vindoo Dara Singh. If termination comes, we shall sorely miss Shilpa Shetty and her Colgate smile. And, if there is to be a funeral, there are only two people who can deliver the eulogy—Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, for their remembrance of things past and the blessings that the IPL showered on so many people. It was a good life, a full life, and, in good Hindu tradition, there could well be an afterlife. Some call it Moksha. In cricket, it’s called the Doosra. The reports of the IPL’s death could well be premature. Organ transplants are one way to revive a dying patient, and a full detox and Kejriwal-style colonic could well see a revival. There is too much at stake to allow the IPL’s ashes to be thrown to the winds just yet. After all, the other Ashes has survived since 1882. The IPL is made up of pampered professionals and politicians equally well versed in the art of making a comeback. So we can hold off those professional mourners and substitute the requiem for rebirth. Like Jesus Christ, our superstars can be resurrected and emerge in different colours, owing allegiance to a different master. The Bhopal Bangers? The Pune Pulverisers? Or even the Srini Slayers! Much like jugaad, reincarnation is a unique Indian phenomenon, much like the IPL was. RIP, which could also mean Rest in Pieces. Outlook India
SPORTS US Open: Indians Do Well in Doubles NEW YORK: In what seems to be a mouth-watering clash for Indian tennis fans, Rohan Bopanna has ensured a semi-final clash with veteran Leander Paes after the two won their respective mixed doubles matches on Day 8 of the US Open here. The fourth-seeded pair of Paes and Hingis moved into the finalfour after getting a walk-over from the Romanian pair of Simona Halep and Horia Tecau in the lasteight encounter. Bopanna and his Chinese Taipei partner Yung-Jan Chan though had to battle hard against Su-Wei Hsieh (Chinese Taipei) and Henri Kontinen (Finland). The secondseeded Bopanna-Chan combine got the better of Hsieh and Kontinen 7-6, 5-7, 13-11 in a 1 hour 50 minute battle on Court 17. Meanwhile Bopanna also continued his winning run in the men’s doubles draw as he booked a quarterfinal berth alongwith partner Florin Mergea. Lahiri Makes International Golf Team LOS ANGELES: Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee expressed delight on Monday after confirming their spots in the International team to face the United States in the Presidents Cup, the first time the two countries have been represented in the Ryder-Cup style tournament. Lahiri was assured of his spot after being the seventh highestrankedinternational player eligible for the competition while Thongchai was two places back at ninth to fall inside the top 10 automatically selected for next month’s event in South Korea. “I can’t describe my feelings right now,” said Lahiri, who tied for fifth at the PGA Championship last month, the best ever finish in a Major by an Indian golfer. “Growing up, you look up to events like the Ryder Cup and feel terrible about it as you can’t be a part of something like that. “But thankfully, we have The Presidents Cup for us to aim for, and it is such an achievement to
make the team. “This will be a massive boost for golf in India and the region as a whole.” Former paratrooper Thongchai meanwhile said he hoped his participation would serve as an inspiration to the next generation of Asian golfers. “It’ll be the first time that a Thai player will play in The Presidents Cup,” the 45-yearold said. “I think I can help the other young Asian players. PM Modi Sets Deadline for Secys to Finish Infra Projects BY CHETAN CHAUHAN NEW DELHI: In a bid to fast-track infrastructure projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given specific tasks to secretaries and chief secretaries for timely execution of projects by end of this financial year. In the mid-year appraisal of major projects, Modi was apparently anguished at the slow pace of execution, as he highlighted the projects’ importance to India’s path of growth. The Prime Minister through video conferencing with central and chief secretaries gave specific deadlines for giving necessary approvals, creating infrastructure to start work on projects and commissioning of projects held up for years.
He also sought better coordination between central ministries and state governments to prevent “unnecessary” delay and asked chief secretaries to have state specific monitoring mechanism for projects of national importance. As per the minutes of the meeting accessed by HT, Modi laid emphasis on providing rail linkage to coal mines and creating corridors to evacuate power from plants coming up in new coal mining areas. He outlined the benefits of the dedicated freight corridor and asked cabinet secretary PK Sinha to ensure timely execution of the project. Modi issued instructions with respect to projects in 13 different sectors including the 4,000-

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam remain unchanged on Sunday as water level of Brahmaputra and its tributaries still flowing over danger level. As per the official flood bulletin on Sunday, 17.68 lakh people have been affected in the current flood. 21 districts have been affected in the flood that begun on August 22 last. Altogether
277 relief camps have been opened up for flood affected people. The death toll in the current flood rises up to 45 as five more died on Sunday in flood related incidents in different parts of the state.
