Karma – The Art of Bollywood

By Malay Vyas HOUSTON: Bollywood Dance Theatre took an Art form as colors, hues and costumes adorning the Miller Outdoor Theatre on June 28, with Karma presented by India House and Naach Houston. A visually spectacular production coming from none other than Houston’s own Bollywood personality Mahesh Mahbubani the Artistic Director of Naach Houston and his talented team. The show opened to a packed audience on a Sunday night, of over 7000 people from Houston's diverse cultural background. Vipin Kumar, the General Manager of India House welcomed the audience, followed by a short film highlighting the activities at India House. At promptly 8.40 pm, Naach Houston with it's amazing performers graced the Miller stage, mesmerizing the audiences with a reverberating opening dance to ‘India Waale’, to a thunderous applause. The story of Karma, scripted by Mahbubani is a saga covering two generations, it is story of love, passion, and integrity, Karma: Set in a non-linear story telling format, goes back and forth with nostalgia and reminisce telling the story of Veer and Naina, our characters, their choices and the Karma they create together.. Such a story format in itself is tough to create on a live stage, but under Mahesh’s directions and supported well by Arif Memon’s able light direction, the Naach crew truly created a tap-
estry of art – all home grown, from Houston. The story of Karma begins in the present followed by a flashback to India about 25 years ago, two good friends are in a dance production – Naina (played by Star Gilani – young, Sapna Thadani – mature) gets a scholarship from a dance school in US and decides to leave, Veer (played by Sahil Thakkar – young, Malay Vyas – mature) is heartbroken because he sees their relationship much beyond friendship. Time heals lost love and Naina finds Aryan (Shah Ahmad) in the US while he finds Zara (Meenakshi Kumar – young, Brinda Patel – mature) in India. Time flies, their children grow up and meet. Shaan is Naina and Aryan’s son while Sanjana is Veer and Zara’s daughter. Karma makes them meet and fall in love. Their love story is well depicted through teenage years (played by Zohair and

Rhea) and adult years (played by Chris and Shailee). When the parents consent to Shaan and Sanjana’s wedding, they realize that there are timeless connections that still bind the heart. Naina and Veer meet again at an airport in India and things start moving in slow motion. All’s well that ends well as is true in all Bollywood movies, and so does Karma. The time capsule connections are shown well by the use of same songs at different times in the show (manwaa laage), Aryan’s death scene and the contemporary numbers that follow (Duhaai and Thousand Years) can bring a tear to the discerning eye. Mahesh’s solo on Tose Naina depicting Aryan's transition into the light, was a true master class performance from
the veteran . The Backstage management executed efficiently by the Miller Staff and the Naach Volunteer team to bring in intricate props and sets is another area worth commending. Mahesh's 6th directorial production at the Miller outdoor Theatre, working with an amazing crew that help to create the magic. with sophisticated use of elaborate backdrops, stage design, stunning visuals integrated with the scenes. The performance lasted a little over two hours transcending the

like Naach to put up a truly entertaining show. Houston Iftar Brings community, elected officials, mayor together to Break Fast By JaWaHaR MalHOTRa
HOUSTON: The Mayor chose to end her speech to the packed hall with a story with a moral, cupping her hands as she spoke. “The future lies in your hands,” she declared, reflecting on the common thread of lament for the recent Charleston killings that wove through all the other speeches. “Let us join hands together and make the world a better place.” Parker recalled how the annual dinner used to be called the “Mayor’s Iftar Dinner” when it began as a small gathering on the steps of City Hall and was first organized by then Councilman M.J. Khan. It has moved to other venues, like the GRB Convention Center and in recent years has grown to the large scale event that it is now. At her urging, the name was changed to Houston Iftar to reflect the role and desires of the local community. “We are an international city. In Houston, friendly is a noun, not an adjective,” Parker continued, “It is a place of tolerance and diversity.” The Annual Iftar Ramadan Dinner, which has become a tradition in the metroplex over the past 15 years, was held last Sunday evening, June 28 at the Bayou City Event Center off the South Loop and Fannin. The entire hall was filled with nearly 1500 people who came to break their fast with organizers and elected officials from across the city. Though Khan is still part of the organizing group, this year’s event was chaired by Sunny Sharma, President of the Sister City Associations of Abu Dhabi, Baku, Basrah, Istanbul and Karachi, in conjunction with the Islamic Society of Greater Houston and coordinated by Muhammad Saeed Sheikh. The event, which was emceed by Nadia Gire, opened with prayers by Zara Khan and verses from the Quran in Arabic by Nihat Yesil, followed by a discourse on the “Human Values in Islam” by Imam Imad Enchassi of Oklahoma City. Admitting that his parents were Egyptian and Lebanese and his wife Hispanic and Native American, and his “kids confused!”, Enchassi spoke of commonalities in the Quran and the Old Testament

dance : the Passion of my lifetanusree shankar
By saNCHalI BasU HOUSTON: On talking to Tanusree Shankar, one would not know the Indian dance royalty that she belongs to. Although hailing from the family of the late Uday Shan-
extravaganza of the opening ceremony involving 80 or more artists from Houston and Kolkata. Tanusree has brought 7 professional seasoned dancers from her troupe Krishna, Debjit, Surojit, Gobinda, Indranil, Arnab and Kunal to train the local dance enthusiasts. The rehearsals begin with a rigorous but fulfilling warm up everyday and the routine is different every time (you can see a small video clip of it in the online newspaper version). The importance given to detailing and isolating every part of the body is commendable and the dance style is unique in its own right. Every dance movement is so graceful, and her belief in the philosophy, “Practice makes perfect” makes every student go that extra mile. All the dances are group dances and she stresses on the team work and right positioning, to make the beautiful flowing choreography work. The dancers who are from all different backgrounds of dance styles at different levels of expertise have all been assigned dances based on their capabilities and everyone is enjoying dancing and train-

center for Gayatri consciousness opens in Katy with Grand celebrations
By GayaTRI PaRIWaR HOUsTON KATY: The grand opening and pran pratishtha ceremony for the new temple of ma Gayatri in Katy called “The Center for Gayatri Consciousness” took place very successfully in the presence of five saints from Shantikunj ashram, Haridwar India. Resp. Dr. O.P Sharma ji, Resp. Shri V.P. Tripathi ji, Resp. Shri Shantilal Patel ji, Resp. Shri Ramesh Tiwari ji and Resp. Shri Pushkar Singh Raj ji from Shantikunj had travelled especially for the ceremony from India. The respected saints poured their heart and soul in the ceremony and really channelized the divine energy in the program. Everyone could feel the subtle presence of divinity very distinctively and

temple. Through the dance performances the kids welcomed everyone to the event and also explained the significance of Gayatri Mantra. Enter the Travelguzs (pronounced Travel Guys) and your problems tend to disappear. Set in a serene office on Corporate Drive in Stafford, the Travelguzs office is decorated with enticing travel destination posters on the walls while informative travel catalogues line up the bookshelves. The phones ring softly and the conversations range from simple airline bookings to information dissipation on exotic far away destinations. Welcome to Houston’s travel headquarters. CEO & Founder Hamid Lakhani set this company up in 2013 after decades in the travel industry in Houston. COO & Associate Ketki Shah also has more than twenty years in the travel business. The duo is a formidable, well-trained and well qualified team in the do-
main of international travel, vacationing and Cruises. Passion for travel rings through his voice as Hamid explains the world of travel business: “Before the internet, being a travel company was a lucrative prospect. But in the last decade or so, business fell as customers turned to the internet for travel deals and airline companies decided that travel agents, as distributors wasn’t a viable proposition”. “The world has come a full circle now, that customers and airlines see the value of a travel agent”, Hamid explains the current market dynamics of an average travel agent. Founded on the strong belief of providing top-of-the line customer services, Hamid does not believe in discounted pricing to be the only answer to seek business. “We have loyal customers who understand the value that we bring to the table and are willing to pay our service charges for a better experience,” reasons Hamid. “A customer who asks for discount today, will never be loyal because
the moment the next agent offers him a dollar less, the customer is gone”, adds Ketki making perfect business sense. “There is no way internet or big airline companies can bring the personal touch that a customer oriented travel company can. We bring value to the table”, says Hamid. “Customers are well aware of travel destinations and they know where to go, however, they trust us and our judgement in making all arrangements,” reminisces Ketki as she fondly narrates an incident where a customer stopping over in Turkey missed their domestic flight from Istanbul. Ketki received a frantic call at 3.00 AM in Houston, she stayed up, rejigged their entire reservation including hotel and onwards air reservations at that hour. Upon returning to Houston, the customer came into the Travelguzs’ office to thank them personally. “We take pride in earning our customers’ trust” beams Ketki. filled environment Gayatri mantra aahutis were given by the devotees. The shantikunj team sang very melodious and impactful pragya geets, which mesmerized the attendees. Adarniya Dr. Pranav Pandyaji, who had to cancel his visit due to health issues, had sent a video message for the attendees which was played during the ceremony. Pran Pratishtha & Gayatri Maha yagya Next day, on June 27, the pran pratishtha ceremony was conducted where the divine energy of Maa Gayatri, Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh were invoked in the idols. Resp. Dr. O.P. Sharmaji who was a medical doctor and a radiologist by education before he committed his life to spirituality, explained each and every ritual scientifically to the devotees which created a very keen interest towards the ceremony especially in the youth. After the invocation a 24 kundi yagya, where all attendees gave their ahutis, was conducted. Hon. Consulate General of India in Houston Shri. Parvathaneni Harish was the chief guest for the event. He arrived with his family and took part with full enthusiasm in the yagya. An annakut was also organized to welcome Maa Gayatri in the temple. A book stall showcasing a wide range of literature written by the founder of Gayatri Pariwar Pt. Shriiram Sharma Acharya covering a variety of topics related to science & spirituality was also set up on both days. Center for Gayatri Consciousness – A brief introduction Gayatri Pariwar aims to bring heaven on earth by awakening divinity in man and is inspired by the motto “Hum badlenge, yug badlega (when we transform, the world transforms)” In order to achieve this goal we are building a unique place which will be a place of worship as well as a place to learn the skills required to transform one’s personality. With this in mind, we have planned to install the idol of Ma Gayatri, the goddess of righteous intellect, Lord Hanuman, the highest ideal of devotion and Lord Ganesh, the giver of discriminatory knowledge. Along with this, we will also have space for various activities that will help the devotees in sculpting their personalities and developing themselves into what truly can be called a divine human being, because we believe that “Apna sudhaar hi sansaar ki sabse badi seva hai (reforming oneself is the biggest service to the world)”. Later, Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent his videotaped greetings and felicitations which were broadcast to the entire hall. Organizing Committee Coordinator Muhammad Saeed Sheikh recognized all the officials and dignitaries, which included Guest of Honor S. Javaid Anwar, the President & CEO of Midland Energy & Petroplex Energy, who has been the main sponsor of the event for the fourth year running. Anwar recalled his mother who died this past March and how she loved to speak on the phone with her former neighbors in Jaipur before the Partition. “Don’t let people hijack
religion,” he said. “We need education, killing innocent people is not the answer.” Jihad Turk, the President of the Bayan Claremont Islamic Graduate School flew in from Los Angeles for the event to deliver a discourse on the “Significance of Ramadan”. He talked about his Christian mother from Oklahoma and his father from Jerusalem as influences in his view of life. “Ramadan is a month to reframe the way our religion is viewed for its compassion, justice, mercy and generosity,” he said. “The Quran teaches that there is a better way. Repel evil with goodness until your worst enemy becomes your closest friend.” In light of the recent killings in Charleston, South Carolina which were done by a white person, M.J. Khan spoke about the
importance of ruling out bias against peaceful Muslims. “America has challenges,” he said rousingly. “The amazing thing is that nobody denounced White folks and Christianity for the killings (in Charleston). But if it had been a Black or Hispanic or Muslim, they would have branded them and asked ‘Why is this is a problem with your religion?’” he added to loud applause. After Dua (Invocation) by Imam Tauqer Shah of the Maryam Islamic Center and Aadhan by Fatih Bayard, the fast was broken with the traditional dates and a small snack laid out in boxes at each seat. A sumptuous meal was then served, buffet style, at the far side of the hall, and catered by Tempura Halal Restaurant, as it has done in previous years.

BROOKLYN: The NBA is an everexpanding league, with broad fan interest throughout the world and players increasingly coming from new nations and areas of the globe. That reach hit a new milestone on Thursday night, June 25 when the Dallas Mavericks selected 7-foot-2 center Satnam Singh with the 52nd pick in the 2015 NBA draft. Singh is the first Indian-born player to be selected in the draft, following in the footsteps of 7 foot-5 Sacramento Kings center Sim Bhullar, who became the first player of Indian descent to play in the league in April. Bhullar had visited the Sikh National Center in Houston at the Baisakhi celebration last year. The 19-year-old Singh was born in Ballo Ke, a small village in the Punjab and came to America in 2010 to attend high school and train at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Singh spoke no English prior to his enrollment at IMG but has picked up the language and culture. He had planned to play in college but was not heavily recruited due to concerns that he would not qualify academically, which essentially forced him to turn pro. Singh spent the past year playing for IMG's graduate team with an eye toward being drafted. “The legend of Satnam Singh is beginning,” said Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. “We wanted a big guy. We believe in creating legends in Dallas and we certainly created a legend.” He was referring to the Texas Legends where

Gandhi’s First Experiment in Satyagraha

The story thus far… Gandhi realizes that he could be more effective at supporting the cause of the Indians in South Africa if he returned to India. Once in Calcutta, he drew attention to the plight of the South African Indians to the Indian government and media, where there was widespread support. But he was soon recalled to South Africa as the Lord Chamberlain was visiting South Africa. In 1906, an ordinance introduced by the Transvaal government required all Indian men, women, and children, to register themselves and obtain a personal certificate bearing their name and thumb impressions. It was demeaning and humiliating to Indians, who refused to submit to the terms of the ordinance. They resolved to fight it. Gandhi saw the need for passive resistance or satyagraha. He explained to the people his concept of satyagraha. First, he said, they must be prepared to observe absolute nonviolence. The authorities would take all measures to put down the agitation. They might use violence, arrest people and send them to jail, but all this must be faced without resistance, Gandhi told them. “Merely disobeying the government’s laws will not be enough,” Gandhi told them. “You must have no hatred in your hearts and you must cast away all fear.” The Government ignored all Indian protests against the ordinance and it came fully into force. The Indians decided to disobey the provisions of the ‘Black Act.’ Hundreds of Indians were arrested, tried, and jailed. They all pleaded guilty and went to jail without putting up any defense. Gandhi too was imprisoned. Then one day he was taken out of prison and sent to Pretoria to see General Jan Smuts. “This movement you have started,” Smuts said, “must stop at once. It is not in me to dislike Indians, but they must obey the law”. “I would rather die than submit to this law,” Gandhi replied. “It is meant to humiliate the Indians.” After some argument, however, they reached a compromise. Gandhi promised to end the satyagraha if the act was repealed and the prisoners released. Smuts agreed to do this provided the Indians would register

of their own accord. On this agreement, they parted. Back in Johannesburg, Gandhi called a meeting of the Indians.“We must now register voluntarily to show that we do not intend to bring a single Indian to the Transvaal by fraud,” he said. “If we show our goodwill by prompt registration, General Smuts will see to it that the “Black Act” is repealed,” added Gandhi. Many Indians agreed with Gandhi, but a man named Mir Alam disagreed, saying it was Gandhi who had earlier preached that only criminals get finger-printed. He wanted to know why Gandhi had changed his mind. Early the next morning Gandhi, with his fellow satyagrahis, set out for the registration office. But on the way Mir Alam attacked him with a heavy stick. Gandhi fell down unconscious. Mir Alam and his associates went on beating him until he was rescued. When Gandhi recovered consciousness, he found himself on a couch in the house of an Englishman whom he hardly knew. Struggling to sit up, Gandhi requested that Mir Alam not be judged too harshly for not understanding Gandhi’s stance about the registration. Then he insisted that a clerk from the registration office should come to take his thumb impression and make out his certificate. In this way Gandhi was duly registered. Many Indians followed Gandhi by registering voluntarily. But General Smuts, reneged on the deal and did not repeal the “Black Act.” The Indians, disappointed at the Government’s attitude, demanded a return of their applications for voluntary registration. The Transvaal government did not budge. Gandhi, who had by then recovered from his injuries, gave the government a very firm ultimatum: If the Black Act is not repealed before a fixed date, the certificates collected by the Indians will be burnt. When the Government ignored this threat, Gandhi started another satyagraha movement. A big bonfire was lit and more than two thousand certificates were burnt. Many Indians openly crossed the
border into the Transvaal, where their presence was illegal. Gandhi and many of his compatriots were imprisoned several times in the course of the agitation. When Gandhi came out of jail for the third time, the Indians held a meeting and decided to send a deputation to England to acquaint the British Government with the real situation in South Africa. Gandhi and Seth Haji Habib were asked to go to London and present the grievances of the Indians. Accordingly they went, but accomplished nothing as the British government favored the British domiciled in South Africa. They returned with grim determination to fight to the bitter end. Gandhi then made a big decision. He gave up his practice as a lawyer. He felt it was a conflict of interest earning his living by law while defying it. Hermann Kallenbach, a white farmer, was so impressed with the peaceful way of life at Phoenix that he offered Gandhi his own big farm near Johannesburg to start another colony. He suggested that all those who had lost their jobs and homes by their participation in the satyagraha could settle there. The new colony was established in 1910 and named “Tolstoy Farm” after the Russian writer whom Gandhi much admired. Here people who were different in nationality, religion, and color lived together like one family. They worked hard and shared the fruits of their labor. Gandhi spent much of his time at Tolstoy Farm. He was engaged in teaching the children and in other constructive activities. Gandhi’s efforts to persuade General Smuts to change the attitude of the Government towards the Indians had failed. Meanwhile, the struggle continued against the Black Act and the poll-tax. And now hundreds of Indian women, including Kasturbai, joined the movement. Meanwhile a recent court decision in South Africa holding that the law did not recognize Indian marriages, drew much unhappiness amongst the Indian women who could not stand this attack on family ties. They openly broke the law and were imprisoned in large numbers. In the coalmines at Newcastle, in Natal, Indian workers went on strike protesting against the repression. News of the arrests, the deportation of passive resisters, and the untold sufferings of Indian families angered the people of India. A large amount of money was collected for the relief of the victims. Many satyagrahis were beaten and flogged, and some lost their lives. Gandhi, who felt intensely the humiliation his people suffered, took a triple vow of self-suffering. He decided to dress like a poor laborer, to walk barefoot, and to have only one meal a day, till the poll-tax and other injustices were abolished. But Gandhi found the Government relentless. There was no solution in sight. He knew he had to take further drastic measures for any chance of change benefitting the Indians and people of color in South Africa. -To be Continued

18 July 03, 2015 IITs and IIMs: More Maybe Less In a country that is starved of good educational institutions, big brands like IITs and IIMs are obviously in great demand. They also bring some kind of an economic and social heft to the place where they are located and hence the clamour for more IITs/IIMs. The political classes are aware of such aspirations and have often used the establishment of new IITs/ IIMs as a sop to appease voters. Earlier this month, the Centre cleared a proposal for the setting up of six new IIMs. Since 2008, there has been an expansion drive of the IITs: From seven IITs in 1994, the plan is to have 23 this year and eventually 29 — one in each state. These institutions have a cache brand value, hence the demand for their proliferation. While there is nothing wrong in the demand for and establishment of IIT/IIM ‘branches’ in smaller towns, what the government needs to review is whether they are spreading these brands too thin? According to a HT story that appeared on Sunday, the IITs that were set up after 2008 are suffering from a host of problems: Many are operating out of borrowed campuses and are plagued by a lack of labs and other infrastructure, like hostels. The students depend heavily on online lectures by faculty members sitting in some other IITs. Digvijay Patil, an IIT-Kharagpur student, launched a petition last year, pleading with union HRD minister Smriti Irani to stop launching new institutes. When older IITs are struggling with teacher vacancies of up to 43%, how would the new ones attract staff? Every good educational institute and faculty needs a flourishing ecosystem to survive and most small towns don’t provide that. The same argument holds true for AIIMS. All this has diluted the brand of the established institutions of excellence without adding any value to the new ones. The building of branches of IITs and IIMs also shows our obsession with IIT/IIM brands. Instead of pandering to the demands of the voters, the government should invest more in other institutions. India cannot afford to have islands of excellence like the IITs and IIMs or institutions that have the brand tag but are actually below par when it comes to quality. In fact, the IIT/IIM brand name will suffer in the long run if the new institutes don’t live up to the standards set by the older ones. And the worst sufferers will be the students. Hindustan Times

Scams Are Back, All’s Right with World BY MANAS CHAKRAVARTY The nation heaved a huge collective sigh of relief as revelations of alleged improprieties surfaced against Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Raje and Smriti Irani. ‘It was getting too much,’ said an aggrieved citizen, ‘over a year had passed for the new government, without any skeletons tumbling out of the cupboard. This was highly irregular. Thankfully, things are now rapidly coming back to normal.’ A hack with a media outfit echoed that sentiment. ‘This government kept on talking about development, foreign policy and other dreary stuff. I was so bored I had taken to drink. I would like to thank Lalit Modi for saving me from alcoholism.’ His editor concurred. ‘That guy deserves a medal,’he said, adding he was writing a novel to be called ‘From NaMo to LaMo’, in which Namo invites LaMo to set up a YPL or Yoga Premier League in India, with yoga competitions and cheerleaders. ‘Wait,’ he added, ‘here’s a tweet from the PMO, probably about the scandal’. ‘No, it’s about congratulating Burundi on their national day,’ he said, disappointed. A cynic said the revelations had come in the nick of time. ‘I was
on the brink of becoming cynical about cynicism,’ he shuddered, adding that would have destroyed his entire world-view. ‘You see’, he explained, ‘The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways. The point, however, is to laugh at it.’A morally outraged person complained that opportunities for expressing moral outrage had diminished after the new government took over. Not everybody is happy. A producer at a TV entertainment channel was devastated. ‘Earlier, the news channels had sunk to the level of dispensing fake fury over things like red beacons on cars. But the news has become so entertaining these days that nobody watches our shows,’ she sniffed. A crony capitalist said he disliked all the publicity. ‘Lalit Modi is giving us a bad name. You see, we cronies are humble networkers who pull our strings with all parties impartially and do our skulduggery quietly, shyly shunning the limelight,’ he explained. Not everybody is impressed. ‘Naaah, this doesn’t quite make the grade,’said a chap who was a political scientist on the internet. He said the revelations were ‘no scam, not even
a racket, hardly a boondoggle and could barely be called a fiddle’. ‘It’s more sham than scam, really,’ he said sadly. He lamented, sobbing inconsolably, that the great scams of bygone days were probably gone forever. A friend consoled him by pointing out it was early days yet and it was only fair to give the new government time. He said reassuringly it hadn’t done a bad job of entertaining us with its antics about ancient India, love jihad, beef bans and other circuses. A public relations guy opined it was a failure of communications. ‘Lalit Modi misunderstood what the Swachh Bharat campaign was all about,’ he said. He was interrupted by a tweet from the PMO. ‘Warm congratulations to Mongolian president for starting yoga’ he read out. But the literature student had the last word. ‘I’ve always wanted to try out this quote from Orwell’s Animal Farm,’ he said, before spouting, ‘The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.’HT

The first thing Alice noticed was an ancient godman sitting on top of a magic mushroom smoking ganja from a chillum, with a placard on which ‘Smoking is injurious to health’ was displayed prominently. ‘I wonder what latitude or longitude I’ve got to,’ she said, proud of the big words. ‘This is India, my dear,’ said the sage, ‘where we give everybody lots of latitude.’ ‘Who are you?’ asked Alice. ‘Ah, that’s the great puzzle,’ said the godman before dematerialising, ‘never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you
had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.’ Next, Alice arrived at a gated community. HOUSTON: Trodding the finish line on May 16, with a 15:39:41 completion time with a dual Pakistan/USA flag across his back, the first Pakistani American made history at the IRONMAN North American Championship Texas 2015. “I am lost for words, breathless and frozen – Wow”. These were the silent yet emotional words still jogging in Khurram Khan’s head after a relentless fight of perseverance and inner strength, completing the annual Ironman North American Championship Texas Triathlon; one of the most well respected physical and mental endurance competitions in the world. To put in perspective, less than 1% of the total world population that competes in the elusive 3-sport challenge actually completes it successfully. For those not familiar with the sport, this comprises of a 3.86KMswim, 180.24KM bike ride, and a blistering 42.16KM final run. A 31 year old native of Spring, TX, Khurram Khan’s success story is not just about mental and physical preparedness, diet, routine prep schedules; the roots stem back to his core defining principles growing up in hometown, Karachi, Pakistan. Khan, as noted by his peers, family, friends, and co-workers is known to be passionate about his origin, and strong cultural values. Competing in the IRONMAN North American Championship, some 2835 entered, and those lucky enough to finish were hailed as an IRONMAN, and have some connection or story to share. “Being the first PakistaniAmerican
ever to complete this Triathlon, it took a moment for to sink in. Tracing back to the preparatory months leading to this glorious day, I had read about the difficulties and hardships, and how those that competed failed or pulled out. Even still, this does not truly prepare you for what to actually expect when you physically run the course. The past 10 months of vigorous training can only be summarized as excruciating. Along that pathway, there were multiples obstacles, and

commitments I could not put off, but I somehow managed to still work through those. It was a nightmare as I’ve never really swam much over the years. Running was another obstacle, as I’ve never ran more than 5K ever. My strength however was biking, as I knew this would be my anchor to gain time and would be my strongest leg in the sport. Sewa Lead Interns Explore Grass Root Community Work with Texans Together

BY ANOUSHKA GIRI HOUSTON:Television, newscasts and other mediums provide the wellto-do middle class a glimpse at the “worlds” of those it has solely seen as part of a statistic, another demographic, another poverty-stricken neighborhood stained upon the comfortable lives that the otherwise middle class suburban background offers. We hear of the strifes and it’s enough to say that emotion can be evoked when we hear these stories, but until a true encounter is made with the very movers and shakers who change the inhospitable circumstances, it’s quite impossible to understand. On June 25, a group of SEWA Houston Interns were given
the opportunity to harbor such understanding when Alief community leader Frank Garcia unfolded his own story and welcomed us to his vision and the sanctuary it has materialized into. Garcia welcomed us as his team members, as he sought to understand our own motives behind assisting the individuals around us through education and leadership program. Yet his communication with us did not stop there. Acknowledging that we would be unfamiliar with the hostile situations of the Alief neighborhoods, Garcia took to conveying his connection to the community. Growing up within a family that continuously sought apartments as it looked for a stable job opportunities, Garcia
lacked a sense of homeliness to any particular setting. However, this did not prevent him from being affected by the negativity of the Alief community he would eventually settle in. Childhood and adolescence were consumed within the hardships, but this negativity would mark Garcia, now a member of Texans Together, with lessons that he would later manifest into a community center capable of feeding his community a power to organize, to lead, and to empower both themselves and the rest of the society which they aimed to pull out of the negativity. A tour through the community center evokes a sense of comfort and intellect, be it to children who create new friendships and forge new lessons through reading, or to adults who receive information regarding immigration, financial assistance, or simply put, a helping hand. It is individuals as Frank Garcia who imprint a vision upon society, and it is society which then changes its circumstances. HOUSTON: South Asian Youth Alliance (SAYA), an initiative of Indian Muslims Association of Greater Houston ( IMAGH), was launched on April 27, 2014, to help the South Asian Young Adults, find mentors, develop leadership skills, build a peer supported network, and learn about their heritage. SAYA’s goal is to have young representatives from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan as its members. SAYA had its fourth event, Coffee With The CEO at the Marriott Westchase. This event is a discussion based series with CEOs from many different companies coming to share their success story. The invited guest was Global Vice President, P.J. Purujit Patel from Stellium Inc. Stellium Inc is a specialized management consulting firm, designing and delivering solutions to improve businesses worldwide. Patel is a recognized IT and Business Leader, bringing more than 15+ years’ experience in manufacturing and oil and gas industry. Mohammed A. Khan, President, SAYA welcomed Patel and SAYA members. Hafeeza Shaik, Secretary, and Zaid Hussain, Historian then introduced the objectives of South Asian Youth Alliance and this event. Patel began sharing his journey in life and the steps he has taken to reach
the position he is in today. Like many typical Indian parents, Patel’s family also had expectations that he’d also study medicine and become a doctor like his father. Although he grew up in India, they did not force him to follow his dad. After getting admitted into Medical School, Patel changed his mind and went to an Engineering School to pursue his passion. Patel holds Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, (Baroda, India), Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from University of Houston, and an MBA from Rice University with focus on Finance and Entrepreneurship. After completing his Masters, Patel had aspired to achieve the highest level in the technical branch. Post-MBA, he learnt to see the whole spectrum of business. Patel added, “If I can do that again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.” It shows that learning never stops and education truly breeds success in the minds that acquire it. In leadership lecture series, guests are free to talk about lessons they learned growing up and what qualities buoyed them to success. Patel explained that together with technical skills, it is perhaps more important to develop ‘people skill’. Everyone is different and have different ideas. As a colleague, employee or employer,

Mama’s Punjabi Recipes
Tori te Wadiyan (Zucchini Squash & Dumplings) In North India, the gourd or squash that is really widely available and used is the tauri, the short, thin and dark green variety that is commonly called zucchini in the US. The most used is the long, smooth and stout, leaf green squash which resembles a bottle, called ghia or kadoo and known as the bottle gourd in the US. Tauriyan are so easy to grow in a small strip of land as it is a vine that can be trained to climb up on strings. In our three-story home in Rajouri Garden in West Delhi, we had tauriyan growing every year and the slender green cylinders hung over the outer white brick wall and many people would pick them as they walked by! Tauriyan are also very low in calories, contain no saturated fats or cholesterol and the peel is good fiber that reduces constipation and gives some protection from colon cancers. They are also high in potassium and contain moderate levels of B-complex vitamins. Most Punjabis won’t enjoy eating tauriyan by itself as they are limp when cooked and taste watery. Wadiyan are just the ingredient to enhance the flavor of the dish as the small pieces mix with the cooked tauriyan. The spiciness and aroma of the wadiyan permeate through the dish and add that special zest when you bite into a piece along with the tauri. Apart from the ingredients, the secret to good wadiyan is the hot sunshine of the Punjab’ as these lentil dumplings have to dry on their own and not force-dried through an oven. Usually, wadiyan are made of channe (chickpeas) or hare channe (green chickpeas) and the black mahn or urad daal: some people, like my mother, would even leave a few small hara channe in each dumpling for added flavor. Just as with ghia, tauriyan cook fast in its own vapor in a kadai (wok); and you have to be careful just that the dish doesn’t get too mushy. There is no need to add piyaaz (onions), adrak (ginger) or lasan (garlic) to this dish either as the wadiyan bring out the taste. Ingredients: 8 medium tauri (zucchini squash) – choose ones tender in the middle 1 or 2 Punjabi wadiyan (lentil dumplings) – spiciness to taste 2 tbsp tael (olive oil or vegetable oil) ½ tsp haldi (turmeric powder)
5.Spices to taste: namak (salt), mirch (red pepper), garam masala Directions: 1. Cut off the top stalk, don’t peel the tauri, but cut into 1/2 inch thick wedges. Wash thoroughly and let them drip dry in a strainer.
2. Heat the oil in a kadai over medium heat. Break the wadiyan into ½ inch pieces, throw in and stir till they are slightly brown. Add ½ cup of water and cover over low heat for 5 minutes so that the wadiyan become soft. Add the haldi, namak, mirch and stir. 3. Now add the cut tauriyan, stir till they are coated. Cover and let it cook in its own steam for 10 minutes over medium heat. 4. Take the cover off and check if the tauriyan have let off enough vapor and are tender. If the water is low, turn off heat and cover; if not
then let it cook uncovered for 10 more minutes over low heat till the water is reduced. Stir gently to make sure it doesn’t stick. 5. For best taste, sprinkle with garam masala and serve with hot rotis or crispy paranthas. Shakuntla Malhotra is a skilled cook of Punjabi dishes made in the old-fashioned style that she learnt as a young woman in her ancestral home in Lyallpur, India before it became part of Pakistan after the Partition in 1947. People have often admired her cooking for its simplicity and taste that comes with each mouthful. Even in her mid-eighties, she continues to cook daily and agreed to share some of her delectable Punjabi recipes.

BY RENUKA VYAVAHARE, The film is set in a fictional village called Tanakpur in Haryana. Arjun (Rahul Bagga), a local electrician falls in love with Maya (Hrishita Bhatt), wife of the village pradhan (Annu Kapoor). Influential member of the Khap Panchayat, pradhan, in order to maintain his prestige, falsely accuses Arjun of raping his buffalo. Instead of rubbishing this silly claim, the cops too get involved adding to the chaos. Said to be based on 'true events', the film attempts to mock the superstitious, irrational and orthodox thinking of village folk and khap panchayats. The underlying message being - logic and reasoning take a backseat when it comes to meting out justice. Though well-intentioned, intriguing and effective in places, this satirical tragicomedy is as sluggish as the proceedings of the very judiciary it takes a dig at. The first half is wasted showing Pradhan and his sidekick (Ravi Kishan) falling for the buffoonery of a self-proclaimed godman (Sanjay Mishra). He even claims to have a cure for Pradhan's impotency. Arjun's clandestine affair with Maya and their not-so-secret rendezvous too eat up a lot of time. The film gets
to the point only in the second half. As far as comedy is concerned, lines that are genuinely funny get repeated to the point that they cease to amuse you. What is hard-hitting is the tragedy of the situation (what Arjun's family goes through) and gives some meaning to an otherwise absurd script. If that aspect was given more prominence, Tanakpur would have been a much better film.
For a satire, subtlety is what you miss. You can't possibly harp on potty jokes, describe women's breast sizes and crack jokes on rape to sound smart and socially responsible. Sadly, this social satire, which could have been an eye-opener on false cases and fraud witnesses, literally has more shit (pun intended) than substance. -Timesof India
MUMBAI: Actress Kangana Ranaut, who is riding high on the success of “Tanu Weds Manu Returns”, is perfect to play warrior queen Rani Laxmibai in his upcoming biopic, says director Ketan Mehta. “She (Kangana) is on board. She has liked the script. It’s role of a lifetime. She is at the top now… she is doing good work. I think she was best for the film,” Mehta told PTI. To get into the skin of her character, Kangana will be undergoing training in horse-riding and sword-fighting. Earlier this month, Nestle had to recall Maggi noodles, while Hindustan Unilever also withdrew its Knorr instant noodles brand over safety and regulatory issues. On June 8, FSSAI had come out with the advisory on product safety testing of all instant noodle products
in India after lead beyond permissible limits in Maggi noodles along with taste enhancer Monosodium glutamate (MSG). “At that time we had sought clarification from FSSAI since Top Ramen product approval is pending with the regulator. They have requested us to withdraw the product until they give the product approval,” Indo Nissin Foods Pvt Ltd Managing Director Gautam Sharma said in a statement. He further said Top Ramen was extensively tested in the last few weeks after product safety concerns arose in the category. macaroni brands such as Top Ramen, Foodles and Wai Wai sold and manufactured by seven companies to check compliance of norms. These include Nestle India, ITC, Indo Nissin Food Ltd, GSK Consumer Healthcare, CG Foods India, Ruchi International and AA Nutrition Ltd. Nestle had destroyed Maggi noodles worth Rs 320 crore after the withdrawal. HUL also recalled its Chinese range of ‘Knorr’ instant noodles from the market pending product approval from FSSAI. Indian Power Plants Find Rs 1.2 Trillion of Capacity has no Takers BY RAJESH KUMAR SINGH NEW DELHI: At a time when almost a third of India’s 1.3 billion citizens have no access to electricity, power plants worth about Rs.1.2 trillion are struggling to find customers. High interest rates and weak industrial demand have coupled with India’s unusually cool summer and unseasonal rains to curtail electricity usage. That’s left some 20 gigawatts of capacity—enough to power New Delhi thrice over—without longterm supply contracts, according to Ashok Khurana, director general at the association of power producers, a lobby group based in the capital. “New plant initiations have come to a grinding halt,” said Debasish Mishra, a senior director at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. in Mumbai. “The situation is very discouraging
for anyone planning to set up a power plant in India. If not addressed in time, we will swing from the current surplus situation to a major shortage in a few years.” For JSW Energy Ltd, one of the affected power generators, almost half its capacity lacks long-term buyers, said chief executive officer (CEO) Sanjay Sagar. While Sagar blames tepid power demand on “a downturn in economic activity,” the situation also reveals structural problems afflicting the next link in the chain of India’s power market.Power plants sell to electricity retailers, preferably on long dated contracts. And the financial health of those retailers, controlled by state governments and forced to supply power to farmers and the poor at subsidized prices, is worsening. Accumulated losses
India’s electricity retailers have accumulated losses of Rs.2.5 trillion and lose Rs.70,000 crore every year, according to the first-year report card of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Reviving the distribution companies will be crucial to Modi’s election pledge of providing round-the-clock electricity to every household in the country by 2019. “That’s the reason why good demand from industrial customers is so critical for distribution companies— because they are the paying customers,” said Khurana. “That demand is missing now.” India’s installed capacity is 272.5 gigawatts, according to the power ministry. It costs roughly Rs.6 crore to set up a megawatt, said Sambitosh Mohapatra, a partner at PwC India, so 20 gigawatts translates to about Rs.1.2 trillion.

MUMBAI (ESPN Cricinfo): A couple of weeks ago, Ajinkya Rahane couldn’t even make India’s ODI XI, but after surprisingly being named captain for the limited-overs tour of Zimbabwe, the batsman has said that he is “very confident to handle this new responsibility.” Rahane’s game had come under criticism during the Bangladesh ODIs, with MS Dhoni suggesting that Rahane struggled to rotate the strike on slower pitches. Rahane, though, felt the captaincy offered him an opportunity to improve his batting in the shorter formats, and said that he had a “great hunger to learn”. “I know how capable I am and I believe in myself. I have learned a lot from whatever cricket I have played in the last four-five years,” Rahane told BCCI.tv. “I wasn’t thinking about the captaincy. I didn’t know about it. It came as a surprise, but whatever domestic and international cricket I’ve played gave me confidence. I am a very hardworking guy. I always want to be the best in the world and I know my capa-
bilities.” While Rahane has led in just two matches in senior representative cricket, he said he had picked up a “lot of ideas” from playing under Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rahul Dravid, his captain at Rajasthan Royals. “Under Dhoni bhai, I have learnt a lot from his calmness and the way he handles everything on the field. Majority of Sindh Heatwave Victims were Homeless: Minister KARACHI: Nearly two-thirds of the victims of a killer heatwave that swept Sindh last week were homeless people, the provincial health minister said Monday, as the death toll in Karachi reached over 1,200. The city of 20 million inhabitants is a sprawling metropolis with few green areas and has scant facilities for coping with intensely hot weather. Those living on the city's streets have little access to shelter or safe drinking water, making them particularly vulnerable to the scorching temperatures.
“About 60 to 65 per cent of the heatstroke victims were beggars and heroin addicts, street people,” Jam Mehtab Dahar, the provincial health minister told AFP. Zafar Ejaz, a senior health official, said the death toll as of Monday stood at 1,229 across the city's hospitals. NEW DELHI: In a major security breach at Tihar Jail, two undertrials scaled the wall of the ward they were lodged in and then dug a tunnel through the boundary wall to escape from one of the most high-security prisons in the country. While one of them was later caught, the other one is still on the run and a mega manhunt has been launched to nab him. The sensational jailbreak took place on the intervening night of Saturday
and Sunday and came to the notice of jail authorities only when the two inmates were found missing during the morning roll call. The two inmates who managed the daring escape were identified as Faizan and Javed both of whom were lodged in jail for burglaries. According to prison sources, Faizan and Javed, both of them were lodged in Jail No. 7 of Tihar since the last couple of months. On Saturday night, they scaled the
wall of the jail they were lodged in and reached Jail No. 8 whose wall is the perimeter wall of the complex. The duo then dug a tunnel below this wall and escaped through a nearby drain. While Faizan was soon nabbed, Javed, who was arrested two months ago in a burglary case, managed to give jail authorities a slip. After desperate efforts to catch Javed by prison authorities failed, they finally informed police late on Sunday night. A case was registered at West Delhi’s Hari Nagar Police Station last night and several teams have been formed to nab the absconder. Tihar DG Alok Verma and DIG (Prisons) and spokesperson Mukesh Sharma did not respond to repeated phone calls for their version in the case. A senior police official said that the prison authorities informed them very late. “In addition to launching a manhunt to nab the absconding inmate we are also investigating whether any insider was involved in this stunning jailbreak. They could not have dug a tunnel with bare hands, they must have used mechanical instruments. We are investigating the case from all possible angles,” he said. -Livemint.com

Houston The city of Houston will be hosting its annual Southwest Airlines Freedom Over Texas on July 4. Clint Black and Josh Turner will perform in the city's annual freedom celebration.
