“Finding Free and Reliable Health Information” BY ELIZABETH BRACKEEN HOUSTON: When searching for information about cancer, its treatment, side effects, coping or nutrition you can get overwhelmed very quickly and it can be difficult to determine what information is reliable. The best thing you can do is to start with a source that you trust. The National Cancer Institute www.cancer.gov and the American Cancer Society www. cancer.org are both excellent resources for cancer patients and their families. Both of these sites are comprehensive in the cancer information. When those resources have been exhausted and you go searching for more information, it is good to have a critical eye when reading unfamiliar websites. The three most important things to look for are the organization that is providing the information, the date the information was written or last updated and the name of the person who wrote the post or article. In addition to those elements, it is good to be wary of sites that is making amazing claims or sites that want you to pay and also beware of those sites that take your demographic information without telling you what they will and will not be doing with that data. You should look for language that says something like “We will not sell

your information to a third party”. A great place to find website recommendations for any health or medical topic is the National Library of Medicine’s www.medlineplus.gov. The sites listed on MedlinePlus have been evaluated using strict quality guidelines. In addition to great links for health topics, MedlinePlus includes a medical dictionary and medical encyclopedia, tutorials and videos as well as information on drugs, herbs and supplements. If you are preparing for or trying to understand results from lab tests try
www.labtestsonline.org to learn more. If you are having an x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, radiation therapy or another radiological procedure, www.radiologyinfo. org will be very helpful. There are a lot of great websites for finding health information and if you are looking more information about a specific type of cancer, try out our Pathfinders at www.MDAnderson.org/tlc for more recommended resources. If you are on your phone or your tablet, you have even more choices for health information in
the App Store and the Play Store. The www.cancer.net mobile app is a good example of what is available for those dealing with cancer. This app can help track medications, symptoms, treatments and side effects and you can write or record questions for your doctor. One last app recommendation is Ask The Nutritionist http://www. dana-farber.org/nutrition-app.aspx You can find great health recipes and read questions and answers from nutritionist such as nutrition tips or information on cancerfighting nutrients. Keep in mind,
no website or app can replace the knowledge of your clinical team. If you are uncertain about something you read online, they are the ones to ask. Soulful and Melodious Nights with Adnan Sami
BY VANSHIKA VIPIN HOUSTON: After a successful sold out show back in March and April 2013, the host Rehan Siddiqi yet again came up with another edition of the Adnan Live in Concert. The event was all about the man who made a big difference by giving up on 330 pounds but he still continues to scintillate many with his soulful and melodious voice. He is none other than Adnan Sami, the voice behind many touching Bollywood numbers we listen to. The Adnan Sami Live in Concert happened to be another big success organized at Houston’s Southwest Arena Theatre last Saturday, March 28. The chosen venue, Arena Theatre is one of Houston’s oldest and most successful concert venues. The reason behind it being chosen as the venue for the event was because of its unique design and the revolving stage the theatre provides guests with an intimate evening with their favorite entertainer. It was all set to kickoff the event and so did Samia Adil the emcee for the evening. Samia Adil first introduced Rehan Siddiqi, the organizer of the event to invite the superstar of the evening Adnan Sami. With a round of applause Adnan Sami was welcomed to the center stage and he looked in a great shape, fit and healthier after
his weight loss. Once Adnan took the center stage there was less of talking while he began to sing “Teri aankhen garam masala” from the movie Garam Masala which happened to be his first peppy number for the evening. While it was just the beginning Adnan continued singing his several hit songs one after the other. After Garam Masala it was time for some “Oyela Oyela” a very popular song from the movie Ajnabee
followed by “Dil Keh Raha Hai Dil Se,” “Kabhi To Nazar Milao” and “Pyaar Hota Nahi Sabhi Ke Liye.” After all these songs came time for the most heard and favorite song of the crowd which was a soulful number “Noor-e-Khuda” from the movie My Name is Khan. After some singing it was time to run the fastest fingers to play keyboard. Yes, Adnan is the man who is also known as the fastest keyboard player, which
adds on to his singing skills. It was all set for Adnan to play keyboard and showcase his brilliance with his fingers for the audience gathered at the Arena Theatre. After a scintillating performance on keyboard it was time for a little break while Adnan stepped backstage. This was not it for the evening as there was much more to come from the musical sensation Adnan Sami. Meanwhile, to entertain and captivate the audience there was a
belly dance performance that was organized which did not allow the wait for Adnan Sami elongate. Once the dance performance was over, the host of the event Rehan Siddiqi introduced all the sponsors and media partners who helped him make this event a big success. He also called upon the new Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, who has been allowed to keep his beard and turban and other articles prescribed by his Sikh faith, the department’s new policy of accommodating to the religious tenets of the Sikh faith. Then Harris County Sherriff Adrian Garcia was called on stage along with Adnan Sami and he personally pinned a badge on his shirt and appointed him the new sheriff of Houston. The show was well put together and Arif Memon and his team at DMMS did the production and technical management of the show. To conclude the evening with a melodious and soulful memories Adnan then took over the stage and sang few of his major hits like “Tera Chehra Jab Nazar Aaye” and ended the evening with his very popular and soul lifting song “ Lift Karade ”. Since the first show happened to be a sold out event with more people demanding to see the show, Rehan organized another show, on April 2, Thursday.

Over 100 Students Participate in the IITAGH /C@deFest/ at Clements High School

HOUSTON: On a bright Saturday morning, over 100 students checked in at the registration desk at Clements High School for the IITAGH /C@deFest. The event hosted by the IIT Alumni of Greater Houston (IITAGH) and Clements High School focused on teaching students how to code a website in a day. The students came in, met with their friends, settled down at the tables in main area, and opened up their laptops ready to begin. Anne Beckman, coordinator of the Global Studies Academy (GSA) coordinator at Clements High School welcomed all the students. She introduced Pratish Kanani, President of IITAGH, who spoke for a few minutes about graduating from an engineering university where he learned about
problem solving and structured thinking, concepts that they would learn during the day. Pratish then introduced Anand Chauhan, the instructor for the day, who walked the students through the fundamentals about computers, the differences between the internet and the web, how to use HTML tags and JavaScript code to create webpages, and how to integrate multiple webpages into websites. Anand finally walked the students through how to upload their website to the internet. There were 15 volunteers from the Clements Computer Science Club that helped the students as they developed their own custom webpages. HOUSTON:Rama Navami – Lord Rama’s Appearance Day was celebrated at ISKCON of Houston on Saturday, March 28, with spiritually satisfying program and packed cultural performances. Hundreds of devotees crowded into the temple at ISKCON of Houston to take part in this very special and auspicious celebration. Lord Rama is
one of the main incarnations of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is celebrated as the incarnation of the Lord who set the perfect example of an ideal king, son, brother, husband, and master. He is also called maryada-purusottama or the “one who exhibits ideal behavior in all circumstances.” The festival in the temple room began with an ecstatic kirtan (melodious chanting of
the holy names of the Lord) led by Jivanand Das and a Maha Arati (offering of ghee lamps and auspicious articles to the Lord) by devotees. The altar was beautifully decorated with flowers, fruits and the Deities wore colorful outfits - the ultimate attraction of the day. shan to all that attended. Nainamrita Das gave an inspiring spiritual talk on Lord Ramachandra’s pastimes from both the Ramayan and the Srimad Bhagavatam. All the devotees and guests were eagerly involved in the hearing of the pastimes of Lord Ramachandra. The program in the temple concluded with an ecstatic kirtan led by Dwarakanath Das. The Celebrations continued in ISKCON of Houston’s auditorium, Gauranga Hall, with
cultural presentations by the local talent. These performances included dances, vocal and instrumental concerts and video presentations. Many of Houston’s elite dance and music schools took part in the cultural program with various artists presenting Kathak, Oddissi, Bharathnatyam, Classical Violin and Tabla performances. Also featured was a video presentation for Goswami Academy – one of North America’s holistic academic school based on the teachings of the Vaishnava spiritual tradition.

An Afternoon with Theater Legend Debesh Chattopadhyay at Houston Durga Bari
BY SANCHALI BASU HOUSTON: It was a pleasant early spring afternoon, when I got to meet Debesh Chattopadhyay at Houston Durgabari last Sunday. With the soft breeze blowing his hair, cigarette in hand, he was in a relaxed, leisurely mood taking a break between his very hectic drama rehearsal schedule. It was a pleasure chatting with this theater director, actor, playwright from Kolkata. For the last 27 years he has worked in this field and is currently in the forefront of the Bengali theater scene and has now even made strides in documentary film making. Chattopadhyay was in Houston on a special assignment to conduct a theater workshop and drama rehearsal with the local theater buffs. He has taken on the responsibility of staging a play under his direction with the amateur actors here, at the North American Bengali Conference (NABC) to be held

in Houston at the George Brown Convention Center July 10-12, this year. I was able to catch a glimpse of the rehearsal in progress and there was pin drop silence excepting the
actors saying their lines and an ambience of intense seriousness in the air. On talking to the amateur actors, I found that they were very enthused by his guidance and were trying to live up to his high
expectations. They were all very grateful at getting this great opportunity to learn the tricks from the master of the trade right in the middle of Houston. Debesh was very impressed by the sheer dedication shown by the amateur actors. There was the initial shock which he had to overcome, since he is only used to working with professional actors. But seeing the serious interest and willingness of each actor to invest long hours towards rehearsals, despite their extremely busy schedules, he has been forced to reciprocate. He said that it has been a new learning process for him and overall has been a great fulfilling experience for him to go back to the basics to train the amateurs. An integral part of the Bengali theater group Sansriti, Debesh has been instrumental in directing several of their successful full length and short plays. He explained to me the definition of the word San-

sriti, which is derived from the Sanskrit words Sam and Sriti. It means journeying together towards a common and unified goal and essentially reflects and highlights the ascent of the theatrical journey of human beings towards a better world. He was very happy and proud to announce that he will make his presence felt in a big way at the upcoming NABC with three different productions. He will be staging his professional Sansriti production with actors from Bengal, the second production will be with the amateurs from Houston, and of course the third will be his latest Bengali film, Natoker moto. He wanted to reach out and invite all prabashi Bangalis (Bengalis living outside of Bengal) to attend the NABC in Houston, and thus bear fruition to all the hard work and effort being put in. BY NALINI SADAGOPAN PEARLAND: Sita Rama Kalyanam celebration, an annual event at the Meenakshi Temple Society of Pearland, felt even more auspicious this year as the date coincided with Sri Rama Navami on March 28th 2015 on Saturday. The stage was decorated so beautifully with the Rama parivar (Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman) that it brought in the celestial ambience. The blissful wedding took place with every step of the way being
carefully explained by the knowledgeable priests (Sri Pavan Kumar, Sri Sridharan and Sriman Narayana Charyulu) at the altar while those gathered to sponsor the event diligently followed the ritual. Right from the bedecked bride and groom, to the décor, to the spread of sweets made by devotees, the spectators were blessed to be part of this holy matrimony. Highlight in the sweet display was the paruppu thengai , a cone shaped delicacy made specifically for wedding s in the Southern India. Rituals
included tying the kankanam, kanya dhanam (offering of the bride to the groom), mangalya dharanam (tying the knot), and homam ; the entire ceremony took place colorfully and sequentially. The Houston devotees proved to be ardent supporters of the Sita Rama wedding and had flocked fervently to take make it a huge success. There was enthusiastic participation from the board members at the event and rava laddu specially made by the committee was offered as prasadam to the attendees. Following the wedding, the celestial couple was carried around the temple premises in the silver chariot in a procession. Other notable activities were - the rendering of Raguveeragadhyam by priest Sridharan, Nama Ramayanam and Bhajans by devotees during the festival and a sumptuous lunch. Kudos to the MTS volunteers and board, especially the event coordinators – Bhargavi Golla, Swaroopa Reddy and Kumari Mikkilieni, for tirelessly bringing such great events to the community in an effort to keep our rich Vedic and value-based traditions alive.

Divided Government, Gridlocked House BY RAHUL VERMA, PRANAV GUPTA
For a country that usually finds itself at the bottom of the table in most sports competitions, the sparkling exploits of the Indian cricket team over the years have not only been a source of delight but also of immense pride for India. Along the way, as game’s popularity rose in the country, everyone benefitted. While cricket lovers these days have a steady source of entertainment round the year from the different formats of the game, cricketers too — not only the ones that get to wear the much-coveted blue cap — have reaped the benefits of such adulation with several enjoying almost demigod status. This symbiotic relationship, however, comes under tremendous pressure every time the ‘unthinkable’ happens: India losing a crunch match in a mega tournament, as it happened on Thursday in Sydney. The Indian team, which was playing top-class cricket till then, lost to Australia by 95 runs in the second semifinal of the cricket World Cup. And then all hell broke loose. Instead of debating the cricketing reasons behind the loss and giving Australia their due for providing a spectacular all-round performance, many went after India batsman Virat Kohli and his girlfriend actor Anushka Sharma, blaming her for the defeat. The social media ‘roast’ of Kohli, the vice-captain, and Ms Sharma was tasteless and must be condemned in the strongest possible words. Actor Kamaal R Khan, whose own body of work in Bollywood is suspect, asked his ‘fans’ on Twitter to throw stones at Ms Sharma’s residence because she was the ‘main reason’ for India’s defeat. Even Gautam Bhimani, a cricket commentator, tweeted: ‘Hey how far is the NH10 [a film which has Sharma in a lead role] from the SCG?’ This is not all: Expecting trouble from such a loony fringe, security has been beefed up at captain MS Dhoni’s house in Ranchi. The security cover was not without reason: After the 2007 world cup, irate fans smashed a part of Dhoni’s house. As if these irresponsible cricket ‘fans’were not enough, a certain section of the media also equated the loss with national shame and said that the loss was abject ‘surrender’, as if this was some war that was being fought and lives have been lost because of wrong strategy. Though they had done the damage for their TRPs, they must now accept that the team had a bad day at office. This constant equating of the Indian cricket team’s wins/losses with national pride reflects a poor attitude and it only shows that we’re are not only bad losers, but have no sporting spirit in our veins. The NDA government at the Centre seems to be struggling to ensure the smooth passage of important legislation in Parliament. Recently, it was forced to defer the decision to debate the amendments to the land acquisition act in the Rajya Sabha. Some of the key policies of the NDA government have come as ordinances and the government seems to be on the backfoot as far as the ratification of many of these ordinances by Parliament is concerned. It has faced numerous embarrassments in the Rajya Sabha, including the passing of an amendment by the opposition to the motion of thanks to the president’s address. What explains this? Most political commentators would like us to believe that this is simply a case of the NDA not having enough numbers in the Rajya Sabha. While there is some truth to this claim, in our view, the current gridlock in Parliament is a reflection of two inter-related, yet independent, trajectories dotting India’s electoral politics. The first trend signals greater consolidation of political power at the state level in the last 10 years or so. Ruling parties in the states now have a better chance of re-election. If in the 1990s the incumbent parties had an approximately 33 per cent chance of re-election, post-2003 the chances of an incumbent government returning to office increased to 50 per cent. The greater probability of the incumbent party’s re-election has also led to longer terms for their chief ministers and, thereby, increased the political profile of these state leaders. The elections to state legislative assemblies are also witnessing more decisive verdicts, with the winning party/ alliance taking a relatively higher proportion of seats than in the past. Analysis of election trends of the last 25 years suggests that in many states the proportion of seats won by the winning party/ alliance in the latest assembly election has been much higher compared to the average in

For example, Uttar Pradesh saw a series of hung assemblies since 1989, until the BSP won a simple majority in 2007. In 2012, the SP returned with an even bigger mandate. Similarly, in Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has been chief minister for the last 15 years. In 2009, his party had 103 seats in the state assembly, which increased to 117 seats in the 2014 election. As far as incumbency status is concerned, states could be broadly classified in two groups. In some states like Rajasthan, Karnataka, UP, Himachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the incumbent parties are continuously getting replaced, and the winning party is coming to power with a bigger mandate. In states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, the incumbents are continuously getting re-elected. The second trend suggests that India is in a phase of divided government. In many states, different parties dominate at the national and state levels. Delhi is an extreme case, which is represented by different parties in the Vidhan Sabha, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. While the BJP and the Congress hold all the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seats from the state respectively, the AAP has 67 of the 70 seats in the Vidhan Sabha. In neighbouring UP, the SP has a comfortable majority in the assembly; the BJP has approximately 90 per cent of the Lok Sabha seats, while the SP and BSP share approximately equal space in the Rajya Sabha. trend could be observed in states like Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where parties enjoying popular support in the Vidhan Sabha and the Lok Sabha have a low presence in the Rajya Sabha. On the other hand, the NDA has negligible presence at all levels in West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Ironically, a large proportion of the Congress MPs in the Rajya Sabha represents states where the party has a dismal presence in both the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha. This phase of divided government is probably temporary, and is primarily due to a time lag between the Rajya Sabha and the assembly elections. But it raises two important questions concerning the idea of representation and democratic accountability. First, who should be held accountable for policymaking and policy implementation in a quasi-federal system with bicameral legislatures? Second, is a divided government a sign of healthy parliamentary democracy that creates checks and balances or a hurdle that constantly troubles the ruling coalition in formulating and implementing policies? This divided mandate — popular support to different parties at the state and national levels — is not only impacting the passage of legislation in Parliament but is also likely to play a big role in the implementation of policies. With a majority in the Rajya Sabha unlikely for the government in the near future, Prime Minister Narendra Modi might have to make some compromises and concessions for pushing his agenda of development and governance. His government will have to use some political deftness in dealing with the opposition in the Lok Sabha and seek issue-based support from other parties. In the coming months, we will come to know whether divided governments in India are a sign of maturing democracy or a crisis in governance. Festival: Good Friday and Easter The Friday before Easter is the most solemn day for Christians - it is the day on which Jesus Christ died on the cross. This day is known as Good Friday, Holy Friday, Great Friday or Black Friday. As such,

Some churches concentrate less on prayers, and instead, encourage people to become involved in charitable deeds. In some churches, mourners wear

Catholic churches follow the tradition of the Stations of the Cross. In Western countries, Easter marks the end of the forty days of Lent, a period during which the Christians observe fast and penitence in preparation for the Easter which begins on Ash Monday and ends on Easter Sunday. The week prior to Easter is of great importance in the Christian tradition. The Sunday before Easter is Palm Sunday and the last three days are Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Palm Sunday, Maundy, Thursday and Good Friday respectively commemorate ‘Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, and the Crucifixion. These three days are sometimes referred to as the Easter Tridum. In some countries Easter lasts for two days, with the second called ‘Easter Monday’. The Eastern Christianity starts preparing for the Easter with the Great Lent. Following the fifth Sunday of Great Lent is Palm Week, which ends with Lazarous Saturday, the day which officially brings Great Lent to a close, but the fast continues for the following week. Movie Review: Barkhaa
BY RENUKA VYAVAHARE Jatin (Taaha Shah), a lawyer's son, falls in love with Barkhaa (Loren) the moment he sees her in Himachal. He tries his best to pursue her but she is reluctant since she is scarred emotionally. Barkhaa, who works in a bar for a living, dissuades Jatin from proposing marriage to her but he insists. He takes her to his parents but
they disapprove of the relationship objecting to her profession. Can the two get together against his family's wishes and what is Barkhaa's mysterious past all about? The film is a decent watch for those, who for some weird reason may crave for the 70’s melodrama. It boasts of an archaic story and a predictable plot, with the actors spouting done to death dialogues throughout. If you want to revisit that phase of Bollywood,
where women were perpetually unhappy and had a ‘majboori’ for being that way, you can watch this one. Else, avoid. Loren looks good but is too wooden. Also, barring cinematography and music, other aspects of the film are way too mediocre and cliched for your liking. Sadly it’s 2015 and this formulaic drama has nothing new to offer. -Timesof India

It was the conclusion of a World Cup campaign that was built on thin ice given the team’s limitations and its ability to skate lightly over them. Following a miserable two months in Australia, it was their opening World Cup game against Pakistan that served as the best way to jump-start the creaking Indian wagon. It gave the team liftoff and helped them get going for their next match - against South Africa at the MCG, which was to be in real terms their toughest group game. It was a match won in a way India know best and have been doing so for a while (at one point, in Test matches overseas as well): batting first, maximising their batting skills to pile up the runs and using the weight of those runs to dictate the course of play. This with an 86,876-strong crowd that turned Melbourne into a home game and added to the suffocation of a mounting asking rate. Despite the passion and drama surrounding the match against Pakistan, the South Africa game was India’s best. After South Africa, the Indians moved for a month through the tournament like a maglev train on a cushion of air. Seven straight wins were unexpected, given what preceded in Australia, and for that the class of 2015 must be given due credit. that had been called a “waste of time” by team director Ravi Shastri. One good use of the time that the tri-series could have served was to remind India that their batting reserves were meagre. Against teams with high-skilled bowling in a World Cup knockout, one of their top batsmen would have to produce a miracle innings, ideally their most experienced batsmen with 100-plus ODIs under their belt. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni fall in that category but none could really respond in Sydney. Given that the next World Cup is going to be held in England, separating those batsmen who can tackle lateral movement and play attractive strokes from those who can only do one of the two may be a good idea for the future. The real surprise of the India campaign was the transformation of the quick bowlers from scattergun specialists into a well-tooled pack. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma had enough time to work out what worked best for them in Australia, and hit the intangible yardage between short and good length. They not only asked questions of batsmen but punished those who failed to answer them, including the rampaging South Africans. Against Australia, along with the spinners, they applied brakes in mid-innings but at the end found a familiar nemesis - wild-eyed lower-order hitters. A frequently repeated argument during India’s struggles in Australia was about the team being happy with the processes they were involved in and the attacking brand of cricket they had been playing. At the end of these four months, we return to the process versus result debate. Should India’s World Cup be judged by the standards of their seven straight wins or their single defeat? Did the Aam Aadmi Party grow stronger? Did Prashant Bhushan grow stronger? Did Yogendra Yadav grow stronger? Did internal democracy and Swaraj come into the party? We all got maligned. “Other parties felt with whatever happened since last one and half months...then if this is Swaraj or internal democracy then God save this Swaraj? Who benefitted from this? Modi, BJP, Congress and Ambani benefitted from this,” he said. Responding to the charges of Bhushan and Yadav, who had earlier accused him of looking at winability of candidates rather than their record and character, Kejriwal said he was not greedy for any post and had even resigned as the chief minister. He also regretted that his “own people” doubted his integrity. “Why will I compromise. 100 people can say that I am stubborn (ziddi), but neither the BJP nor the Congress can say I am dishonest. People doubted my honesty... I compromised. We did not give tickets to so many people. “I did not give ticket to my uncle’s son, not my relatives or friends nor did I accept money in exchange of tickets. Every candidate’s
record was cross-checked. We were told that winability of candidates is important. Yes, we have come here to win not to lose,” he said. Kejriwal had also asked the National Council to choose between “him and them” as he tendered resignation from the post of National Convenor, his membership from the PAC, National Executive and National Council. He said he was not in the party to fight with Yadav or Bhushan. “We have given birth to this party. Have given blood and sweat to the party and even put life on stake. I am a diabetic. For 15 days I sat in fast (in April 2013). No doctor was ready to say that I would survive for next 48 hours. My mom and wife cried a lot. My ketone level had gone to 4 and 5, which is much higher than the normal level. I have come back from the jaws of death. Take this party, but do not kill it. I am not here to fight with these people. “My fight is with corruption and communal forces. I am not here to fight with Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav. I have conceded defeat. You people have won. I am here to put an end to this war. You have to decide today. Since last one year, every NE and PAC has seen fights and arguments. Black Money: Swiss Banks Seek Fresh Undertakings From Indians Swiss banks also seek auditor certificates from high net worth individuals and corporate clients to vouch for ‘clean status’ NEW DELHI: Seeking to come clean on illicit funds amid intense government pressure, Swiss banks have asked their Indian clients to provide fresh undertakings to ensure that untaxed money is not stashed in their accounts. Swiss banks, long perceived to be safe havens for parking unaccounted funds, have also started asking for auditor certificates from high net worth individuals and corporate clients to vouch for the “clean status” of their money. The latest development comes at a time when India is aggressively making efforts to bring back illicit money parked by its citizens overseas and Switzerland has also agreed to cooperate on the issue. Sources said that Swiss banks are asking their Indian
customers to provide fresh undertakings that all taxes have been paid on funds deposited by them in these accounts. According to them, banks are also asking both corporate and individual clients to furnish auditor certificates certifying “clean status” of funds, assets and income related to their accounts. Such directives are believed to have been issued to high net worth individuals, wealth management and portfolio management clients, they added. Queries sent to banking majors, including HSBC and Credit Suisse, related to the issue, did not elicit immediate response. Indian authorities are already pursuing cases related to its citizens who had kept unaccounted funds in HSBC Switzerland, after receiving a list of
