India Inc. asks Political Parties to Support FDI in Retail

He added, opening of foreign retail chains would also help Indian SMEs overcome the problem of demand uncertainty. CII said that FDI can help small companies supply in large volumes, improve quality of their products and become vendor to international players, along with becoming cost-competitive in the global arena. FICCI also called for setting up of a regulatory body for the retail sector. “It (setting up a regulatory body) is a good idea... It will ensure better infrastructure in local markets like mandis,” Kumar said. At present, the government entrusts responsibilities like ensuring sanitation, adherence to labour laws, anti- adulteration at shops and mandis to individual inspectors. “A regulator should be set up in place of these inspectors,” Kumar added. According to FICCI, Indian retail market is about USD 490 billion, which is expected to double to USD 900 billion in the next 10 years. According to CII, opening of FDI in retail can increase organized retail market size to USD 260 billion by 2020.

India-China Talks may go off Track NEW DELHI (TOI): Even as it still tries to fix dates for the next round of Sino-India boundary talks, from which China backed out owing to New Delhi’s support for a Buddhist congregation which will be addressed by Dalai Lama, the government is worried that

Philippines Beats India to Emerge as Leader in Call Centre Business
MANILA (TOI): Americans calling the customer service lines of their airlines, phone companies and banks are now more likely to speak to Mark in Manila than Bharat in Bangalore. Over the last several years, a quiet revolution has been reshaping the call centre business: The rise of the Philippines, a former United States colony that has a large population of young people who speak lightly accented English and, unlike many Indians, are steeped in American culture. More Filipinos - about 400,000 - than Indians now spend their nights talking to mostly American consumers, industry officials said, as companies like AT&T, JPMorgan Chase and Expedia have hired call centres here, or built their own. The jobs have come from the United States, Europe and, to some extent, India as outsourcers followed their clients to the Philippines. India, where offshore call centres first took off in a big way, fields as many as 350,000 call centre agents, according to some industry estimates. The Philippines, which has a population one-tenth as big as India’s, overtook India this year, according to Jojo Uligan, executive director of the Contact Center Association of the Philippines. The growing preference for the Philippines reflects in part the maturation of the outsourcing business and in part a preference for American English. In the early days, the industry focused simply on finding and setting up shop in countries with large Englishspeaking populations and low labor costs, which led them to India. But executives say they are now increasingly identifying places best suited for specific tasks. India

Indians, for example, might say, “I will revert on the same,” rather than, “I will follow up on that.” It helps that Filipinos learn American English in the first grade, eat hamburgers, follow the NBA and watch the TV show “Friends” long before they enter a call centre. In India, public schools introduce British English in the third grade, only the urban elite eat American fast food, cricket is the national pastime and “Friends” is a teaching aid for Indian call centre trainers. English is an official language in both countries. However, the attrition rate of expats is around 10 per cent annually mainly due to difficulties in communication and cultural differences, Kumar added. Echoing similar view, Globalhunt director Sunil Goel said some global companies have their largest
centres in the country on one hand, while many local organizations are also going global. “So, the expat hiring is becoming the need of the hour, where foreigner from various parts of the globe are taking up multiple roles and are recruited as experts in sectors like infrastructure, healthcare, power and energy, oil and gas and automotive,” he said. According to TeamLease vicepresident Rituparna Chakraborty, the country is seeing an increased demand in expats across various industries, especially post the
2008 recession in the developed economies. “Professionals from Europe, Southeast Asia and the US mostly are being hired mainly by sectors like travel and tourism, retail, aviation, education and sports, where we see maximum traction,” she said. Talking about salary, she said, for most levels it is at par with industry standards, unless they are being brought in for a particular skill, which is niche and non-existent within the country.

Although makers remain mum, Abbas-Mustan might shoot her scenes with Saif either in Mumbai or Turkey. “What I am most excited about is that I have finally started shooting for Race 2,” says Deepika, refuting talks that the film is running late due to her promotional commitments for Desi Boyz. “I don’t know. I was required for five days initially, which I have already done,” she responds. In the original Race (2008), Saif had shot for a muchhyped steamy scene with Bipasha Basu. At that time, Bips too had stated that, “it’s just work” , though apparently then-boyfriend John Abraham wasn’t too happy. Deepika will also show off her action moves in the sequel. “Yes, I have some action sequences, including car chases and jumping off buildings, but they aren’t fighting scenes. I’d love to do a full-on action movie, though I haven’t yet had a chance to,” she admits. ‘Rockstar made me cry’ Ranbir Kapoor’s Rockstar act might have hit the bull’s eye at the box office, but it also moved his ex-girlfriend to tears. “Anyone would get emotional after watching Ranbir’s performance. I can’t explain what I loved the most. Maybe I connected with the way it was written and performed,” Deepika says, adding she didn’t see Katrina (Kaif) at the screening, as reported by a tabloid. Interestingly, director Imtiaz Ali had given her a narration almost a year-and-a-half ago. Deepika stars with Ranbir in Ayan Mukherji’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani that starts shoot in January next year.

Weaving Ishqiya 2 Keeping Madhuri in Mind (HT) Director Abhishek Chaubey, who is set to reel out the second installment of his debut film Ishqiya (2010) reveals that this time he is weaving the plot, keeping actor Madhuri Dixit Nene in mind. Chaubey says,“I haven’t thought of anyone else except Madhuri for this sequel. The priority is Madhuri, who has permanently moved to India from the US with her family, is set to start her second innings in the industry. The idea has been briefed to Madhuri, but she is witholding her decision until she reads the complete script. “We met Madhuri once and she knows about the project. She will be doing the film only if she likes the script. Once we are done we will meet her again,” says Chaubey. Ishqiya revolved around an uncle and nephew, played by Naseeruddin Shah andArshad Warsi, who fall for seductive widow (Vidya Balan). Chaubey manages to retain the male protagonists for the sequel. “Besides the characters Khalujaan (Nasseruddin) and Babban (Arshad), everything is fresh in the sequel,” says Chaubey adding, “It’s a different story, so a different treatment.” The sequel will also be set in North India. “You will see another look of North India that you haven’t seen in the first film,” Chaubey promises.

Pakistan Business Hits at Barriers to India Trade
LAHORE (Dawn): Cosmetics are smuggled by donkey through Afghanistan, chemicals and medicines track through Dubai. But only a fraction of legal trade travels directly from India to Pakistan. A baffling array of legal and practical barriers to exports between the neighbours has spurned unofficial trade worth up to $10 billion, dwarfing official exchanges of $2.7 billion. But a recent rapprochement that looks to normalise trading relations between India and Pakistan could end a decades-old system that stifles business and saps profits through networks of middlemen, money changers and smugglers. A booklet of 1,945 items lists trade allowed to run from India to Pakistan – but only 108 can be trafficked directly by road through the border post at Wagah, near the eastern border city of Lahore. At old markets in Lahore, traders peddle whitening creams and hair dyes that have
journeyed from India to Karachi by sea bound for Afghanistan, before being reloaded and smuggled along the Taliban-hit Hindu Kush to re-enter Pakistan. Tonnes of industrial chemicals and drugs travel into Dubai, where their port of origin is relabelled to hide their Indian provenance before being sent on to Pakistan. The process entails a mark-up of 15-20 percent, say importers. Pakistan has pledged to open its market to over 7,000 products from India over the next three months and says India should have MFN status by the end of 2012, a step to removing discriminatory higher pricing and duty tariffs. The list of nearly 2,000 items allowed for trade is to be replaced by a list of disallowed items, and a second trading post has been opened at Wagah. Observers say the rapprochement signals
a seismic shift from Pakistan’s traditional and strategic antipathy to India, and a deeper economic engagement between the countries that is crucial for lasting peace in the region. On the Indian side of Wagah, only two trucks can be loaded and unloaded at a time, hampering a burgeoning export trade in gypsum and dried dates. ‘Official figures show that while 4,000 metric tonnes of goods can come into Pakistan on up to 200 trucks per day, only 500 tonnes can leave in 70 trucks. Overall land trade last year totalled 21 billion Rupees in exports compared to 1.33 billion Rupees in imports. For businessmen, their biggest problem is not being able to travel freely. “I want to export this item to India but I cannot go and cannot market my product. 2G Scam: Kanimozhi, 4 Others Get Bail
NEW DELHI (Outlook): In a huge relief to DMK MP Kanimozhi and four others who have been in Tihar jail for over six months for their alleged role in the 2G case, the Delhi High Court today granted them bail treating them on par with five others released by the Supreme Court last week. “I grant bail to five persons. The conditions would be same as imposed by the Supreme Court,” Justice V K Shali said. Besides Kanimozhi, others who were granted bail are Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar, Bollywood filmmaker Karim Morani and Kusegaon Fruits and vegetables Pvt Ltd directors Rajiv Aggarwal and Asif Balwa. The court, however, reserved its order on the bail plea of sixth accused and former Telecom Secretary Siddhartha Behura, saying it will pronounce its judgement later as his plea has been opposed by the CBI. “You (Behura) file your written submissions to the contentions of the CBI,” Justice Shali told Behura’s counsel, senior advocate Aman Lekhi. Earlier, during the day, Additonal Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran said the probe agency was not opposed to grant of bail to the five persons except Behura and they can be released on the ground of parity as the Supreme Court has
already given the same benefit to five other co-accused in the case. The ASG, however, opposed Behura’s bail plea saying the bail pleas of public servants require stricter scrutiny as they are the trustees of public property. Kanimozhi and five others had moved the high court on November 23 for advancing the hearing of their bail pleas, shortly after the Supreme Court had granted bail to five corporate executives -- Unitech Limited MD Sanjay Chandra, Swan Telecom Director Vinod Goenka and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group executives Gautam Doshi, Hari Nair and Surendra Pipara. Their bail pleas were earlier scheduled for hearing on December 1. Kanimozhi and five others had come to the apex court challenging the trial court’s November 3 order denying them the bail. The Supreme Court had granted bail to the five corporate honchos on the condition that they would surrender their passports and will not go abroad without the court’s permission. It had further said that the accused will have to appear before the Special CBI court on each hearing and have to take prior permission for not attending the proceedings. Former Telecom Minister A Raja, who is the main accused in the scam, has so far not approached any court for bail.

Three telecom firms Reliance Telecom Ltd, Swan Telecom and Unitech (Tamil Nadu) Wireless Ltd too have been listed as accused in the CBI cahrgesheet in the case. The CBI had chargesheeted 14 persons in the scam, with Raja being the first to be arrested on February 2, along with Chandolia and Behura. An elated DMK chief M Karunanidhi today expressed happiness over his daughter Kanimozhi getting bail and said the party would organise a big welcome for her, when she arrives here. “I am happy that Kanimozhi has been granted bail. She spoke to me soon after the court gave her bail and both of us shared the happiness,” Karunanidhi, who met his daughter thrice in Tihar Jail, where she was lodged after her arrest on May 20, told reporters here “I am not an autocrat. Party will decide on giving new position to Kanimozhi,” he said when asked whether she would be given a new position in the party. To a question on former telecom minister A Raja seeking bail, he said if Raja spoke to him, “I will discuss about his bail.”
