Dare to Dream
"I
If you can dream it, you can do it”, Walt Disney's voice is something that is profound and powerful. The dream of freedom is also what our erstwhile freedom flighters saw and they did achieve their dream 71 years ago. We have certainly come a long way since, doing both well and not so well in some aspects. The dream was also to make the new free India a symbol of progress and prosperity with a deep sense of national pride and character both, amidst its leaders and the common citizen. Our policy makers and constitution writers were women and men who were intellectuals (not necessarily armchair ones) and gave thought to what became the hallmark of the country's ethos. Development coupled with social welfare across sectors, was the primary goal. However with time, intellectuals became more like the armchair ones and the story of India's development, be it socio-cultural, economic and political underwent a change. Conflicts, corruption and character assassination, took its toll on the common man. Lethargy seeped in somewhere somehow. Being an eternal optimist, I feel we have definitely achieved many milestones, however we could have done so much better at the grassroots level.
“ Our policy makers and constitution writers were women and men who were intellectuals (not necessarily armchair ones) and gave thought to what became the hallmark of the country's ethos”
Tourism is one such sector, if invested into with utmost political will and plan, and with timely implemention could have worked wonders for the country. Though tourism is still not considered a priority sector, the benefits it generates is well established. From poverty elimination and employment generation to bringing in the foreign exchange through inbound tourism, the opportunities for growth are endless. The forthcoming IATO convention scheduled to be held in Vizag in September aims to address this very dream once again expressed by the government, 'Mission 20 Million Tourists Challenges & Possibilities'. The private sector is hoping to decode this dream and once again hoping that the government works with the sector and its vision statement in all seriousness. There is yet another event this year, OTOAI’s annual convention, interestingly being held in South Africa, a country which has a strong connect with freedom and non-violence, a place where the Father of our Nation started his Satyagraha movement. ‘THE ADVENTURE TOURISM GUIDELINES WAS ADEEPLYFELTNEED,NOTJUST BYTHE GOVERNMENTOFINDIABUT ATTHE STATE LEVELAS WELL’ The ministry of tourism (MoT), Government of India recently announced the country’s first adventure tourism guidelines. In an exclusive interview, Suman Billa, joint secretary, MoT, gives feedback on the response from the states and outlines MoT’s role in developing the segment By Steena Joy What has been the response to the first adventure tourism guidelines? The response has been very good. This was a deeply felt need not just at the Government of India but at the state level as well. So we have personally gone through a process of consultation with the different state governments and they have been quite enthusiastic. This is something that unless the states come on board it doesn’t make sense because we want that anybody who is going to be licensed for adventure activities should actually conform to these guidelines. So the tourism minister has written to all the chief ministers and several of them have responded saying they would be conforming to the guidelines. The guidelines will be standard for all states. Did the MoT refer to any international case studies while formulating the guidelines? We have looked at what are the best practices that are practiced worldwide and of course the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) has studied the market and we also had a
this segment we have used their expertise, in fact the guidelines have been drafted by the ATOAI in consultation with the MoT so we are happy to work with them but the regulatory role will always have to be with the MoT. The architecture that we are envisaging is that we have written to all the states because the states are the ones who license the adventure activities so we have said that unless the operator pertains to these standards, the license should not be given.

What is MoT doing to promote adventure tourism in the country? There are a couple of things we are working on. We need to work on the regulatory side as well as the pro-
motional side. 2018 has already been declared as The Year of Adventure Tourism. And for the first time, Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA), the international body promoting adventure tourism, will conduct its ‘AdventureNEXT’ event in India in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh from December 3-5, 2018. This will also mark ATTA’s Asia debut. Another event, PATA Adventure Travel and Responsible Tourism Conference and Mart 2019 (ATRTCM) will be hosted by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board from February 13 -15, 2019 in Rishikesh. For now these are the two activities the MoT is promoting.

'SHARJAH MAINTAINS ITS REPUTATION AS AGLOBALDESTINATION FOR FAMILIES' HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) highlights the unique positioning of Sharjah as a cultural capital in the region and the varied experiences it offers as a tourism destination By Sudipta Dev SCTDA has been focused on the Indian market in recent few years. What kind of growth have you witnessed from here ? From 110,400 in 2016, the number has increased to a total of 138,000 Indian guests, which stayed in Sharjah hotel establishments during 2017. This growth highlights India's strong interest for travel as well as increasing awareness about Sharjah as an ideal place to stay in the UAE. Travellers choose Sharjah for its beaches, family events, natural heritage and adventure activities in the desert and its water sports. What is so distinctive about Sharjah as a tourism destination in the region ? Sharjah maintains its reputation as a global destination for families and is widely positioned as the cultural capital in the region for its rich heritage. However, in recent years, the increasing interest among nature-seekers prompted the sector to tap ways to further capitalise on its natural landscapes and create a distinctive experience for visitors. Sharjah’s natural attractions and outdoor tourism hotels (Kalba, Al HefaiyahMountain Conservation Centre, Wasit Wetland / Kalba Kingfisher Lodge / Fossil Rock Lodge). There are activities in the desert, such as trekking, stargazing, and camping; in particular Mleiha. One can even enjoy water activities such as snorkelling, diving, kayaking in Sharjah at places like Al Khan Beach, Khorfakkan and Kalba. Sharjah has hosted various international

In 1998, UNESCO awarded Sharjah the title of the Cultural Capital of the Arab World, and in 2014 it received the title of the Capital of Islamic Culture. Sharjah is a host to various museums like Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Sharjah Calligraphy Museum, Sharjah Maritime Museum, Sharjah Center for Astronomy & Space Sciences, etc. to provide a better introduction and understanding to the emirate’s history and Emirati culture. What varied experiences does Sharjah offer which would be of much interest to the new age global Indian traveller ? The new age global Indian traveller likes to experience adventure while on a trip. They will enjoy a visit to Khorfkkan, Al Qurm Nature Reserve, Kalba, Al Khan Beach, AlMontazah Waterpark etc. Sharjah never fails to surprise in terms of bringing in the contemporary, especially in this extremely historically significant location for the UAE. For the enjoyment of tourists, Mleiha is a collection of prehistoric settlements that offers an exciting mix of adventure and archaeology. A wealth

of fascinating artifacts, from camel skeletons to pottery and iron tools have been discovered here, with many on display in the outstanding Mleiha Archaeological Centre. There are plenty of family friendly activities in Sharjah that guarantees hours of fun for the entire family. One can visit Discovery Centre, Sharjah National Park, Arabian Wildlife Centre and Children’s Farm, Wasit Wetland, etc. Sharjah offers a treasure trove of modern malls, stylish shops, boutiques and unique souks. Are you promoting Sharjah for MICE? Please give some information about convention facilities in Sharjah. MICE market is undoubtedly continuously expanding across the Middle East, tripling in numbers during the last ten years. We have been promoting Sharjah’s developments in this sector and the advantages of holding MICE activities in the Emirate. We have been constantly working to meet investors seeking for growth ar-
eas in the Arab Gulf, and Sharjah is a perfect launch pad for MICE. With the ongoing fivestar resort developments in the Emirate, growth in the diversity of gastronomic offerings, and other tourism infrastructures, we believe Indian businesses will find Sharjah as an attractive choice to reach out to regional markets. For business travellers, Sharjah capitalises on its leisure tourism advantages coupled with the developments in infrastructure that caters to the MICE sector such as dedicated Expo Centre Sharjah for huge exhibitions as well as the Al Jawaher Reception and Convention Centre for events focused on training, business forum and conferences. Major developments in the hospitality sector also support the growing number of business visitors in Sharjah, providing five-star facilities as well as branded restaurants, convention centers, offering MICE travellers an option to enjoy a uniquely Arabian experience. Your views regarding the hospitality industry in Sharjah, and any new hospitality projects ? Sharjah’s hospitality sector recorded a significant spike in the number of guests and visitors last year, compared to 2016. Currently, the emirate’s tourism and hospitality sector comprises 102 hotels, divided into 56 hotels and 46 hotel apartments, which provide approximately 10,000 hotel rooms. Besides, the completion of the following projects that are currently underway, will add
great value to the emirate's tourism success: Al Badayer Oasis, Kalba Kingfisher Lodge, AL Bait Hotel, Novotel Sharjah Expo, Sharjah's Anantara Resort, Pullman Hotel, Fossil Rock Lodge, DoubleTree by Hilton Sharjah. In addition to Hilton Sharjah Corniche Road, Hilton will manage three more hotels in the emirate. In addition, we expect to announce details soon of another three prominent projects in the emirate; a desert park resort in the Mahthab area featuring 134 rooms, a hotel managed by Tulip with 210 rooms and Ramada Kuwait with 493 rooms. What are your growth expectations from the India market in the next five years? Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority are expecting high numbers in the next five years. To achieve this we are promoting three themes of Sharjah in India– these are Culture & Heritage, Gastronomy and Adventure. SCTDA are organising road shows along with meetings and workshops involving leading tourism agencies across major Indian cities- Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, etc. , we also participate in exhibitions regularly along with establishing multiple FAM trips for tour operator. As indicated by the rising number of Indian tourists flocking to Sharjah’s tourism establishments, the tourism events, festivals and lifestyle experiences are specifically designed to cater to the Indian market’s choices, appealing to both tourists and potential investors.

'VISAFREE ENTRYFOR INDIANS TO SERBIA CAN ONLYFOSTER FURTHER EXCHANGES' Marija Labovic, CEO/managing director of the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia speaks about the many attractions of Serbia as a tourism destination and expectations from the India market By Sudipta Dev What are the unique highlights of Serbia as a tourism destination which would be of much interest to Indian travellers ? Serbia has a big number of tourist assets ranging from quality city-break offer, stunning landscapes, beautiful, very preserved nature, a number of historical and cultural heritage sites (listed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites), rich tradition and a variety of events and internationally renowned festivals. We have very delicious food and good wines as well and hospitality of Serbian people has been witnessed by many visitors. When you come to Serbia, it is to have multiple experiences not just one. Serbian tourist offer matches perfectly global trend of needs for shorter vacations and discovering new destinations. What are your growth expectations from the Indian market following your visa free policy ? The Indian market is a booming market and Serbia would like to be part of it. Along with traditionally very good relations between the two countries and historical connections, the abolition of visas for Indian citizens for entering Serbia can only foster further exchanges and increase the number of Indian tourists to Serbia. Provided that for the time being there is not a direct flight between the two coun-
tries, arrivals will may not increase as fast as they would have otherwise but we still expect the growth rate of at least 20 per cent a year. A significant segment of India outbound comprises the MICE segment. Please give some information about Belgrade as a MICE destination, in particular conferencing facilities. We can proudly say that after 11 years since the Serbia Convention Bureau was established as part of the NTO Serbia, Belgrade and Serbia are now in the world's top 50 meeting destinations (source: ICCA) for the sixth consecutive year. During this period we have witnessed huge improvements in the hospitality sector, so today we have major international chain hotels, with considerable conference capacities, together with superb local boutique properties offering worldclass four and five-star accommodation. Belgrade is the regional hub in terms of air connectivity with 32 airlines operating to/from 69 airports in 38 countries in Europe, Middle-East, North Africa, USA and China. All of this is supported with experienced service providers on the destination that guarantee smooth and professional execution of any type of events. New ambitious investment plans and ongoing projects related to the conference and accommodation facilities make us confident that Ser-

bia's position as a MICE destination will only grow stronger over the coming years. Are you also looking at attracting the destination weddings segment from India ? Any unique properties/destinations for hosting high-end Indian weddings ? Serbia has already become a popular weddings destination for certain markets, and we are aware how important and demanding this segment is in India. Depending on the requirements and number of guests, we could offer an exclusivity of the Royal Palace in Belgrade, since a part of it can be rented for special events. This is also where one of Serbia's Royal Princes got married in 2017. It represents a true tastefully decorated museum of art, full of rich historical significance and a place definitely worth visiting, if not having a wedding
ceremony. In addition to that, a lot of interesting tours and excursions could be organised as a part of a couple’s wedding day, making that special event even more dazzling for the bride and the groom and for their dear guests. What is your strategy for engagement with the Indian travel trade ? We have started with some familiarisation trips for Indian tour operators last year and also launched a joint campaign with a few big Indian tour operators like Thomas Cook and SOTC. We will continue our B2C activities in order to raise awareness of a destination and its tourist products and in the next year we may also consider a roadshow to several Indian cities. Any other factor you would like to highlight about Serbia for the India market ?
Serbia is a country in which civilisations, cultures, faiths, climates and landscapes meet and mingle. The cultural and historical heritage of this country is rich with prehistoric archaeological sites and its legacy from classical antiquity and of course with famous mediaeval churches and monasteries, some of which are included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Serbia has a nice climate and has a lot of beautiful mountains, national parks, rivers and lakes, which are the perfect location for an active outdoor holiday – from hunting and fishing to extreme sports. And the last but not least tourist attraction is Serbian gastronomy – a unique mix of oriental, central European and local Balkan cuisines, it offers a great variety of unusual meals and interesting food traditions.

ape Town is a food lover’s paradise. The Mother City has restaurants a-plenty, from traditional African fare to the more exotic such as Asian, Indian, Mexican and Italian, the sheer variety of choices on offer speaks to the city’s incredibly diverse heritage.
Family-friendly Cape Town is known for being a family-friendly destination and the newly refurbished restaurant in the Company’s Gardens was clearly built with families in mind, with a number of quaint little hideaways for the kids to play in, while their parents enjoy their meals. Basilico in leafy Newlands is a parent’s dream from the wholesome Italian dishes to the magnificent views of Table Mountain and the ample parking (perfect for transporting prams) to most importantly, plenty of space for both youngsters and the family dog. At Café Roux At Noordhoek Farm Village, adults can enjoy breakfasts and lunches (and beer) from Café Roux while keeping a careful eye on the youngsters having a whale of a time in the playpark that borders the restaurant. The village shops are also open from 8:30am to 5:30 pm in summer and from 9 am to 5 pm in winter.
Indian If you’re looking for Indian food in a luxurious setting, then Bombay
Brasserie at The Taj Hotel is the place to visit. Situated inside the old Reserve Bank, there are high ceilings and design that gives an overall feeling of luxury. Tajmahal fine-dining Indian restaurant offers up a taste of authentic Indian with a splash of romance thanks to the story of the Tajmahal, after which it is named. With premises in Hout Bay and Sea Point, it’s no surprise that some of the most highly recommended dishes are the sea food ones! The Tajmahal is also strictly halaal. A relaxed family restaurant, Bombay Chilli is a well-kept secret. With delicious food, a chilled vibe and an extensive menu that is sure to meet everyone’s taste, it’s a must-visit when the need for Indian food arises. There are two branches with the flagship in Muizenberg and a smaller one in Plumstead. The Plumstead branch does not serve alcohol, but you can take your own.

Sports bars
Magica Roma is one of the most popular restaurants in Cape Town. A warm and welcoming atmosphere – generated in no short supply by co-owners Enzio and Franco – and a substantial number of pasta dishes on the menu, all prepared to perfection, make Magica Roma a must-visit before the big day. Italian Kitchen opened in Tokai and married an inviting atmosphere with a great menu to capture the hearts of Cape Town. The Newlands branch was recently opened and has continued the trend with patrons lining up for their gourmet pizzas and wide range of pastas. There is also a dedicated kids menu making it perfect for families. Found in the busy, bustling Kloof Street, Bacini’s is a firm favourite and always busy. Owner Romondo and his family mingle amongst the guests giving Bacini’s a great family vibe.
Sport in South Africa is close to religion. Every weekend, Capetonians across the city descend on local bars and restaurants to catch their teams in action. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to watch the soccer, rugby games, or league football, here are some of the best places in Cape Town to watch sport! Forrie’s is an institution in Cape Town and an absolute favourite among the Southern Suburbs crowd. Just a couple of kilometres away from the Newlands Rugby Stadium, this perennially busy spot is always packed for the rugby. They also screen other sport, including soccer - and they make flag shooters so you can celebrate each goal in style. There are big screens all over the venue, but get there early to get a good vantage point for the games. Perseverance Tavern, District Six, city’s oldest pub, is a great place to watch your team in action. With 11 beers on tap, an awesome beer garden and LCD screens to show the sport, you can’t go wrong with Percy’s. People have drinking here since 1808, so they are clearly doing something right. Toad in the Village, Noordhoek has a solid rugby pedigree with former Springbok Bob Skinstad one of its founders. The Toad, of course, is often filled wth people who’ve come to watch sport on weekends, with a number of big screens to make sure you don’t miss a thing.

isakhapatnam, which is popularly referred to as Vizag, is named after God Vaishaka. The city is a port city, located along the shores of Bay of Bengal and is headquarters to the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Although considered to be an industrial city, Vizag has a rich and vibrant culture and heritage. The city was part of the ancient Kalinga Empire and was ruled by renowned kings, such as Ashoka and Krishnadeva Raya. During the 18th century, the city was a Dutch colony. Today, Vizag embraces its past and present seamlessly, making it an interesting and attractive city to spend holidays. Vizag is blessed with natural beauty, with hill ranges, pristine beaches along its coastline and lush, natural valleys. The city is surrounded by three hills, Sri Venkateswara Konda, Ross Hill and Dargah Konda. Each hill is home to a shrine, dedicated to three different religions. The Venkateswara Konda is home to the Vekateswara Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva; Ross Hill houses the Church of Virgin Mary; and the Dargah Konda is home to the tomb of a Muslim saint called Baba Ishaq Madina Dargah.

It is adjoining the Lawson's Bay Beach and offers aweinspiring natural views and vistas. The beach is perfect for catching mesmerising sunsets and sunrises. The beach is home to the Kali Temple, VUDA Park, a submarine museum and several roadside eateries and restaurants. While the Rama Krishna Beach is not safe for swimming, there are many attractions and activities to keep visitors busy. There is a poignant war memorial on the beach called the Victory at Sea. This memorial is dedicated to the memory of brave soldiers, who laid down their lives during the 1971 Indo-Park War.
Submarine Museum The city of Vizag offers so many creative and unique attractions that visitors will often be overwhelmed by them. One of the innovative attractions of the city is the submarine museum. Located on the Ram Krishna Beach, this museum is housed inside a real submarine. olkata was the capital of British India before it was shifted to Delhi in 1911. Some great monuments built during that time and war memorials attracts local visitors even today. The places that attract majority of tourists are Victoria Memorial (1921), Tagore House (18th century), Howrah Bridge, Marble Palace (1835) , Indian Museum (1814) and Shaheed Minar (1828). This region played a crucial role in India’s struggle for Independence as it was a hotbed of resistance to foreign rule. The Battle of Plassey took place in the capital province of Bengal which included states like West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Assam, Bangladesh and Tripura. When the last free ruler of Bengal Siraj-ud-Daulah attacked Fort William in Kolkata, the British sent reinforcements headed by Colonel Robert Clive and Admiral Charles Watson to fight back. The end of the battle was the end of the ruler as he fled to

Murshidabad Murshidabad was another important region before the emergence of Kolkata. The Hazarduaari Palace built in the 1837 has been transformed into a museum. Also known as the palace with a thousand doors it was built for Nawab Najim Humaun Jah by British Duncan McLeod. There are various historical artifacts on display in-
cluding armoury, paintings, portraits of the Nawabs, works of ivory (Murshidabad school) and of China, swords used by Siraj-ud-Daulah and his grandfather, Nawab Ali Vardi Khan. There is also the Khushbagh Cemetery where rest the remains of Siraj-ud-Daulah and Nawab Ali Vardi Khan.
Barrackpore Barrackpore was the very first site of military barrack set up in 1772. The initial Revolt of the 1857 started here as the two rebellions took place led by Sepoy Binda Tiwary of the 47th Bengal Native Infantry. Now the place has been transformed into a garden in the memory of Mangal Pandey who led revolts against the British army. The Smarak Sanghralaya has many memoirs of Mahatma Gandhi’s work. The district was also home to Surendranath Banerjea, who together with Anand Mohan Bose organised the National Congress in 1883 which led to the birth of Indian Na-

He was influenced by the work of Mahatma Gandhi and quit his day job to create cottage industry products. The biggest stalwart from Bengal was Subhash Chandra Bose who was famously known as Netaji. He raised the Azad Hind Fauj or the Indian National Army and had a plan to gain India’ Independence. He was sent to the Alipore Jail and exiled to Burma. He was later released because of a hunger strike. His residence in Kolkata has been transformed into a museum consisting of archives and a library of Netaji Research Bureau.
The freedom trail in Kolkata leads you to the Victoria Memorial and the Shaheed Minar. The memorial surrounded by 64 acres of well manicured lawns was dedicated to Queen Victoria. The museum now houses memorabilia from India’s Independence movement. The Shahid Minar is a memorial for martyrs, built in 1828. The 218 steps of the tower lead you to the top which provides a bird’s eyeview of the city. In Nagaland, Khonoma is a historic village located about 20 km from the state capital Kohima. It is recorded to have resisted British rule in the region from 1830s to 1880 and etched its name into the history of Indian resistance to the colonial invasion.

The Republic Square in Belgrade is the most recognisable square surrounded by important buildings like the National Museum, the National Theatre and the statue of Prince Michael on a horse. Standing on the flower beds surrounding the statue are interesting cutouts of well known artists whose works have been displayed inside the museum, like Pablo Picasso. A short walk away is the pedestrian zone, which has many stores both sides of the street, great shopping option for haute couture and high street fashion. One can buy old books and vinyls from a street vendor or stop and enjoy the performance of street musicians. The key tourism attractions in Belgrade include St Sava’s

The beautifully restored central dome prepares one for the stunningly golden crypt, where the work has been completed. Tales from the Bible come alive in the colourful murals. Another important place of worship is the Cathedral Church of St Michael the Archangel, a Serbian Orthodox cathedral in the old city. Right across the church is the Question mark tavern, which is the oldest tavern in Belgrade and considered a cultural monument. Nearby is the Residence of Princess Ljubica, which is a perfect showcase of

There are a large number of cannons lined up inside the fortress. One of the most famous landmarks in Belgrade is the statue of the Victor, in the Belgrade Fortress - it commemorates Serbia’s victories over the Ottoman Empire and and Austro-Hungarian Empire. Also located inside the structure is the Dinosaurs Park, which has gigantic replicas of primitive creatures making sound and also some movement, delighting young visitors. Multifarious destination Day trips from Belgrade to nearby towns and cities reveal the multifarious facets of Serbia as a tourism destination. Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia. The town has a languid air about it with its pedestrian walkways, the impressive Square of Freedom, which is dominated by the
catholic Church of the Name of Mary. In the pedestrian zone, the statue of the much loved children's poet Uncle Jova Zmaj is prominently positioned outside the Bishop's Castle. Novi Sad has often been called 'Serbian Athens' because of its beautiful architecture and the environment of the city, a must visit for all travellers to Serbia. The Petrovardian Fortress, which towers over the city, is the location for the popular Exit Festival, the annual music festival held here. While visiting Novi Sad, a dinner at traditional farmhouse Salas 137, is another unique experience for visitors. Located about eight km from Novi Sad is
the town of Sremski Karlovci, on the banks of Danube. This little town, with its many impressive monuments, also has a lot to offer to the visitors in terms of experience. Topping the list is wine tasting and honey tasting at the Zivanovic Vinery. There is also a Museum of Beekeeping in the premises, which traces its roots to the story of how the bees saved the life of the founder. A visit to the 300 years old cellars is included in the tour. There is a small shop from where visitors can buy some exclusive wines and honey varieties which are not available elsewhere. A short walk from the winery is the small Museum of Matches, which has a few interesting exhibits.
It is also advisable to include the town of Topola in the itinerary. The main highlight here is St George's Church also known as Oplenac. It is the mausoleum of the Serbian and Yugoslav royal house of Karadordevic and located on top of the Oplenac Hill. A walk through the woods leads to the marble monument, set amidst trees and vineyards. The church is famous for its colourful mosaic work, almost 40 million cubes and 15,000 shades. The 725 compositions mostly comprise life of Jesus and stories from the Bible. The medieval rulers of Serbia are also represented prominently. 28 members of the royal house are buried in the crypt.

“WE HAVE ADOPTED ORGANIC FARMING IN ABIG WAY Miguel Munoz, chief resorts officer, Mahindra Holidays and Resorts India speaks about the resort and its USP What according to you is the USP of Club Mahindra Kanha vis-a-vis other units of the Club Mahindra family? The key attraction for Club Mahindra members is certainly the Kanha Tiger Reserve, home to the famed Bengal Tiger. Located on the fringes of the dense forest, Club Mahindra Kanha is the largest luxury resort in the region with 62 rooms including 12 luxury tents, all of which offer modern amenities and beautiful views of the forested countryside. We also provide several unique experiences to members both within and outside our resort, such as camping under the stars, nature trails, local delicacies at our Spices restaurant, tour of the nearby villages, and a range of fun and learning activities like pottery classes, story-telling sessions under the banyan tree, and more. What are the primary challenges and concerns that you face running a seasonal property such as this? Our resort occupancy remains high throughout the year. Besides the national park, there are plenty of activities for guests to enjoy within the resort, as well as sightseeing options in the surrounding area. The weather remains pleasant in all seasons due to the thick forest cover, and the landscape turns lush green during the rains, making it an absolute delight for nature lovers. I recollect you mentioned that your focus is on the organic way of life and getting back to nature. Can you throw some light on this? Yes, we have adopted the concept of organic farming in a big way at Club Mahindra Kanha. We have converted nearly 1.45 acres of previously unused land
guest demands and needs which are a challenge to fulfil? Our resorts are well equipped to delight members in every aspect of their stay - be it customised menus in F&B (especially for children), unique in-resort activities, theme nights or a comfortable stay for the entire family. Our staff is well trained to anticipate the guests’ needs and go the extra mile to create magical moments for them. We ensure that every member of the family enjoys their holiday to the fullest and looks forward to their next vacation.

This farm not only brings fresh and organic produce to the dining tables, but also spreads awareness on the need for sustainability. Members love to visit our farm and participate in farming activities along with their children. In addition, we have also adopted renewable energy at the resort. Our solar power generation system has the capacity of generating 450kWp of energy; the inauguration ceremony for which was held in the month of June 2018. ifferent regions of the archipelago of the Philippines converged at the LaliT Golf and Spa Resort in Goa recently to participate in its very first interactive and inclusive event to promote the destination in the India market. DOT representatives from the four regions of the Philippines (Central Visayas, Mimoropa, National Capital Region and Western Visayas) as well as 14 companies and 24 delegates including tour operators, MICE specialists, hotels and transport operators from the Philippines participated in the event alongwith two airline partners, Philippine Airlines and Singapore Airlines. On the buyers’ side, more than 120 travel operators from across India were invited to conduct fixed

meetings with the Philippine delegation. The event used a different format by dividing the Indian operators regionwise and organising the fixed meetings for each region – West, East, North and South India - across four days. Focus Philippines 2018 was inaugurated by Her Excellency MA Teresita C Daza, Philippines Ambassador in India. She was accompanied by Dakila F Gonzales, head - office of product and market development for India and the Middle East. Speaking to the media, Daza said, “This is a good platform to be able to promote the country and build relations. The good news is that in 2017 global tourist arrivals grew at a remarkable seven per cent to 1322 million travellers and is expected to continue in 2018, maybe at a slower rate but there

are opportunities because people want to travel. People will travel because of several internal and external factors that actually contribute to people venturing out from their own countries. Social Media, Facebook, etc encourage people to visit places and there are more
travel choices now with budget carriers. Secondly, Philippines is part of the ASEAN trade bloc of nine countries where tourism has been given an important role. According to WTTC, in 2016 contribution of tourism to the GDP of countries in the ASEAN region was US$ 301 bil-
lion.” She added, “In the global tourist arrivals, two regions have contributed significantly - one, South Asia (where India is located) with 10 per cent and South East Asia (where Philippines is located) with eight per cent. This means opportunities for both our countries. In fact,
EVENT ROUNDUP
Philippines tourism has shown a growth of 11 per cent, far bettering the Asia Pacific average of six per cent. Improved infra development has contributed to the performance. In terms of visitor arrivals into the Philippines, India has moved from 13th rank to 12th rank, showing an 18 per cent growth in 2017. And we are hoping this will continue.” Daza recalled that ASEAN countries use the tagline 'Feel the Warmth' and all these countries have contributed to push for this. “Physically and culturally this region is diverse and the people are quite hospitable and for the Philippines, its people are the greatest asset. Indian PM Modi spoke recently of an ASEAN India Tourism Year in 2019 which will hopefully contribute to more Indians and South East Asians including Philippinos actually travelling in these countries,” she said. She believed that Philippines has lots to offer the India market in terms of sights and sounds. The country has all the three As: Accessibility, Attractions and Amenities. “We are looking forward to the early resumption of direct air connectivity between Manila-Delhi and Manila-Mumbai by Philippine Airlines maybe by end of this year,” she said. India's GMR Infrastructure has already partnered with Megawide Construction Corporation of the Philippines for the newly opened Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) to cater to increased tourist arrivals. The project was executed by GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC). GMR Infrastructure has also won the bid for the new greenfield airport at Mopa in North Goa. Commenting on the market segments the DOT is targetting
in India, Gonzales said, “We are majorly looking at the incentive segment from the India market. Incentive segment is the bread and butter of arrivals from India. Also popular are leisure and active holidays as well as solo women travellers as our country is safe and offers lots of shopping. Soon, we will also be introducing self drive and golf tourism for the India market as well as gaming.” On the wedding segment, he informed, “We have this great characteristic of flexibility and creativity which are the two key factors for weddings. Also we can work within any budget. Philippino DMCs are open to business. For bigger groups the only challenge is air connectivity. But smaller weddings are already doing well.”
Fun and Focus The four regions of the Philippines were represented by DOT officials who made presentations on their various tourism offerings and took questions from the Indian travel agents wanting to know more about the destinations. Central Visayas was represented by Riza Marie S Macaibay who spoke about Cebu and Bohol, the two main attractions in the region. MA Elizabeth C Viray represented the Mimaropa region and spoke about why Palawan's UNESCO World Heritage Site Subterranean Underground river is a unique tourism hotspot. May Mendoza-Ramos made a presentation on the National Capital Region (NCR) or commonly known as Metro Manila. Pamela Denise C Cababasay spoke enthusiastically on Boracay's white sand beaches and the activities that can attract MICE groups. While one group of agents were busy with their appointments,
another group was engaged in interactive and fun activities on destination awareness. Giving his insights on Focus Philippines 2018, Mahendra Vakharia, president, Outbound Tour Operators Association of India (OTOAI) stated, “I am very happy that Philippines tourism has decided to do something like this. It is very important for any tourism body to understand that events like this are critical for the industry because it gives us a direct personal one to one networking opportunity with our partners who we want to work with for our clients travel to their destinations.” He felt that the new format was good because it is easier to manage a small compact crowd and the networking happens more effectively. “There is more seriousness. Sometimes when there is too big a crowd, some things can just get lost in the bargain because there are too many people around. But a small nice compact crowd where you get an opportunity to informally interact and talk to each other is a nice format,” he reasoned. As for the destination, Vakharia felt it is a brilliant destination. “As a tourist anybody who wants to go a country and tick the boxes for the top ten things he wants to do in that country, Philippines will score on all those ten. Its got everything to offer whether it is family, honeymooners, MICE or weddings a combination of nightlife, casinos, shopping is amazing (out of the top ten shopping malls in the world, three are in Manila), and then there are unique destinations like Boracay, Cebu, Palawan. Connectivity is still a challenge but the good news is that we have been hearing that very soon Philippine Airlines is going to resume direct flights
from Mumbai and Delhi by this year end or early next year which will be a very big help. For any destination to get promoted well, flight connectivity is the most critical thing,” ” he added. SanJeet, India representative, Philippines Tourism Marketing Office, felt that contrary to popular belief, the destination was not long haul. “Once they start the direct flights to India, it will only be approx five hours away, like going to Hong Kong. The airline plans to start four flights from Delhi and four from Mumbai. The good part is that this is a destination which has got everything and anything which an Indian wants. Fantastic shopping, ease of language English speaking, great nightlife and luxury opulence. The new hotels there can beat any other hotel in the world and the conversion rates are reasonable. It is great for shopping for wedding trousseaus. Shopping is also of good quality whether clothes, bags or shoes. To top it all, the people are polite and
very helpful.” Commenting on the MICE oppportunities, he elucidated, “If you are looking at mega MICE groups of 2000 to 3000 pax, you have to look at only two places, Manila and Cebu. Weddings are happening a lot here especially on the white sand beaches but just around 500 pax not more than that. But there is huge movement of MICE happening especially dealer conferences because there are lots of post conferencing entertainment options like a variety of bars, shopping, massage parlours, etc. Despite the connectivity challenge, the market is growing substantially 22 per cent growth till June 2018. We are proposing to organise this Focus Philippines as an annual event.” He mentioned that there are over 1800 travel agents in India who have Philippines Specialist Program (PSP) training. PSP builds on the theme of Its More Fun in the Philippines to help travel agents understand and therefore sell Philippines as an ideal tourist destination.

he writing is clear on the wall. The travel industry especially in the outbound business space is going through a metamorphosis and the demand to travel abroad is growing rapidly especially from India’s Tier II and III cities. Tourism Marketing Alliance (TMA) is the result of this market scenario, wherein four industry professional companies namely MSC Cruises, RezLive, BookonBlueStar.com, Pearl Tourism and Leisure Group have come together with the aim to spread steady and strong footprints in new markets in India, as they feel it's prudent to educate those looking for authentic and quality partners in the space who are ready for business. All they need is someone approaching them with an aim to work as partners in this business. TMA's Eastern roadshow touching three cities namely Patna, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar recently concluded with an encouraging response for travel agents, which also reflects the temperament of the market and its interest in the outbound tourism business. The Patna city roadshow witnessed a robust delegate count,

Jayesh Ashar, managing director, Pearl Tourism & Leisure Group showcased a portfolio of products across countries from Africa to Australia, Europe and Bali. RezLive.com's spokesperson Zaheer Jeddy, national sales head, gave the attendees a serious showcase of empowering new agents to work as partners. MSC Cruises led by Kunal Sampat, GM- India, received an enthusiastic response from the attendees, which shows that outbound cruise tourism has promise. BlueStar was represented by Bhavesh N Oza, vice president international markets, who spoke about the importance of rail and airline bookings and how they can empower the agents in these pockets to do better business.
MSC Cruises MSC Cruises is the world’s largest privately-owned cruise line and brand market leader in Europe, South America and South Africa. “Our ships sail year-round in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, and

In our endeavour to do the same, we have been arranging regular training sessions for trade partners, getting engaged in partnerships with world’s leading airlines and hotels providing benefits to MSC Cruises passengers. We are also in
SPOTLIGHT process of launching a rewarding e-learning programme for our trade partners, to strengthen our ties with them,” he said. Speaking about TMA and its focus and potential, Sampat felt that while it is a fact that majority of the business comes from metro cities like Mumbai and Delhi, even Tier II and III cities of India have potential. Guests originating from these cities also have global aspirations and look forward to able and professional travel partners to guide them making the correct choice in their travel plans. "TMA not only gives us an opportunity to connect with travel agents in Tier II and III cities, but also ensures optimum focus and coverage. We interacted with approximately 200+ travel agents during this roadshow and as expected, there was a lot of interest shown for our India sailings along with our regular Mediterranean, Caribbean and North Europe sailings. The Tier II and III cities have been highly neglected and I firmly believe this is the most potential source. The idea is to give them a family/friendly feeling were they can feel free to interact with us, hence to start with we do our presentation and tutorials in Hindi."
Rezlive.com Rezlive.com was established to help travel agents develop a sustainable business model. India’s phenomenal growth in outbound tourism offers an exceptional opportunity for travel agents to diversify from inbound and ticketing business to outbound tourism. From 1991 to 2016, the number of Indian nationals’ outbound departure has grown at a CAGR of over 10 per cent to nearly 2.2 crore. From 2016 to 2017, India’s international tourism spending increased 9 per cent and reached
US$ 18 billion and ranked 17th in the world. The growth is expected to continue in the coming years and provides an excellent opportunity for traditional travel agents to diversify into outbound leisure and business travel and develop a sustainable business model. The growing opportunities also brings its share of challenges. A recent report by Google and BCG finds that an average customer spends nearly 49 minutes to research about a travel destination before making reservations. Travellers also have many optionsoin B2C sites to make flight and hotel reservations. They are well informed and are much more independent than they used to be. Travel agents need to be on top of their game with extensive knowledge of product, destinations, visa regulations, flight routes and best hotel recommendations to win customers. Rezlive.com and other partners in TMA can give travel agents straight-forward solutions and an edge in this competitive scenario. Travel Designer Group, started in 1999 as an outbound operator for short haul destinations, launched its online hotel reservation system in 2007. Today, Rezlive.com is one of the top global brands in online hotel reservations that connects travel agents to over 250,000 hotels, 45000 sightseeing attractions and private transfers in over 900 cities. eeding medical care whilst abroad can be frightening, but certain well informed decisions can come handy while in need! One such decision was taken by Ritika Kandhari's parents, who opted to top-up her university medical cover with TrawellTag Cover-More assistance and insurance. What happened? Ritika Kandhari, a young dynamic girl, who went to Slovenia for higher studies, unfortunately, came down with fever and headaches within few days of joining the university. No amount of medication improved her condition and she was advised to get admitted to the University Medical Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia where she was diagnosed with meningitis. How did we help? All it took, was a call
from Mrs. Kandhari, Ritika's mother, who was back home in India, to a toll-free number for the travel assistance experts to take control of the entire situation in Slovenia instantly. Ritika's health condition was monitored continuously with regular communication between the doctor in-charge, her family and assistance expert. HOT SEAT
DECODING DEV Dev Karvat, founder and CEO – Emerging Markets, Cover-More Group, TrawellTag shares unknown insights about his entrepreneurial journey including the fact that in the early days he literally hired pizza delivery boys for delivery of insurance policies! By Reema Lokesh They say fortune favours the brave. Can you share with us the glimpse of your entrepreneurial journey? The trials, turbulences and the triumphs? At the age of 16, one day I found myself waiting at an insurance company for five hours trying to help a friend get a travel insurance to avail visa for the next day. During times when it would take two whole days to get a policy from an insurance company, the travel agent was thrilled to get it that quick. He asked me if I could deliver insurance at the same speed more often, for a small fee, and this eventually became my means of earning pocket money. This is how the seed for TrawellTag CoverMore was first planted. It has been a journey of discovery, learning highs and lows. Firstly, no prospective client trusted the set-up, so I started servicing them via a third party vendor. Secondly, a new brand doesnt't attract employees, so I literally hired pizza delivery boys for delivery of policies as well. Privatisation and FDI in the insurance sector brought global players into India and a new model of online policy issuance hit the market. I believed that challenges become an obstacle only when you bow to it. So I chose not to! Our dedication and focus on ensuring customer delight, plus our sustained profitable growth, attracted the global giant of travel insurance industry, Cover-More group, to invest in my dream venture in 2012. The group, today, is one of the leading travel insurance providers, after its acquisition by the Zurich Insurance

group, in 2017, providing expert travel protection solutions to over 3.8 million travellers across the globe. Who were your role models and influencers? At every stage in my growing years, I’ve had someone from my family providing me with life lessons that have now shaped my thoughts and ambitions. When I started TrawellTag and building the brand, I grasped four key aspects of business - people management, innovative thinking, an appetite to take risks and above all, humility from business leaders and friends from the industry and outside. Books played a crucial role as influence as well. When I stared working, my father gifted me a book – 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. Along with it, lessons learnt from another book named, Sam Walton: Made in America continue to stay with me to this day. What's your vision and strategy for the future? What's been TrawellTag's growth story from inception till now? My vision has been to bridge the gap between the static insurance company offering and the traveller’s true needs. I have always worked towards being a dynamic travel ancillary solutions provider not only to customers but our clients as well. We started our journey with a single office at a time when the concept of travel assistance and insurance was extremely niche. It’s heartening to say that within a span of 20 years we have spread our wings far

Today’s travellers are largely millennials with disposable incomes, looking for smart travel solutions The next wave of growth will be driven by the these digitally savvy travellers seeking customised offerings at the click of a button on a website or an app. Service providers will attempt to bridge this gap between customer expectations and industry practices in 2017-18.

and wide and today have 43 offices across India with nearly 450 employees and a client base of 11,000 including some of the biggest names in the retail, corporate, OTAs and the airline sector. Last year, our revenues grew by more than 30 per cent, and we hope to keep that trend going by investing in technology-led capabilities to enhance sales and operational efficiency. We aspire to achieve further growth by leveraging Zurich’s capabilities and the experience that we have gathered catering to our e-commerce clients in offering digitally enhanced solutions.
sumers sensitive towards the potential risks prompting them to buy travel insurance. Global travel assistance is also one of the upcoming trends that is picking up in the country today. No travel experience comes with a zero risk tag and the need for travel assistance is gaining importance. Cancelled trip cover, adventure sports mishap protection and concierge services are increasingly being perceived as essential. The future lies in innovation with customers at the core. Any industry practice which doesn’t enhance customer experience will be rejected by today’s dynamic traveller.
Where do you see India's insurance sector unfolding in the coming years? Travel insurance in India is no longer in the nascent stage nor is it any longer a niche product. Global exposure and awareness have made con-

As an industry thought leader, do you have a certain point of view that you are passionate about? Travel makes people’s dreams come true, so I truly feel like a custodian of their dreams as we are in the business of protecting people’s travel. My personal aspiration has always been to provide real-time assistance to every traveller and ensure a hasslefree travel experience, before, during and after their trips. How will we define Dev - the father, son and husband? When it comes to my family, I try to match my father’s dedication towards our family. I am more of the fun parent, joining my kids in all their sports and gaming activities and as a son, I always aim to live up to the culture and family values that define me as a human being. I think, I should leave it to my wife, Bhavi to define me as a husband but I believe, as a couple, we complement each other very well.

ON AWINNING PITCH Tourism Australia's (TA) India 'Master Blaster' Nishant Kashikar, country manager, Tourism Australia, India and Gulf, says that he believes in pushing a person into the pool, and letting him learn how to swim, rather than hand-holding him to complete his task. An exclusive with Reema Lokesh It's been eight years of work with Tourism Australia. How has the journey been? It’s been a privilege to be a part of the Tourism Australia (TA) team to raise the country’s aspiration and awareness in India, and strengthen people to people links between the two countries. Working together with our partners, embracing TA’s core values such as United, Genuine, Positive, Commercial and Innovative, has helped us to achieve several milestones over the eight-year journey. Some of the triumphs include: Successful launch of our first bespoke campaign in India, Namaste Australia, showcasing Australia through the eyes of Indians who have either visited or lived in Australia. Launch of our global campaign There’s Nothing Like Australia and Restaurant Australia, supported by our intensive content integration projects on Sony, Star Plus, and collaboration with regional channels such as Zee Marathi, Sun TV and Colors Kannada, have helped us to bring Australia in the consideration set of our target audience. Association with our Friends of Australia - Sanjeev Kapoor, Harsha Bhogle and Parineeti Chopra - have raised Australia’s appeal among their fans and followers. Launch of an industry-first initiative - Airline Marketplace, which began as a trial, has witnessed some amazing results, and is currently in its fourth edition, and will also be replicated across other South East Asian markets such as Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Prefered Agency Scheme (PAS) and Aussie Specialist Program (ASP) were industry benchmarks to facilitate access
and impart trainings to front line staff of travel agencies The relationship between Australia and India has matured over the years, and is at an all-time high, thanks to the strong people to people links developed through tourism, trade, and education. The key issue and a barrier to drive growth has been lack of direct aviation access between India and Australia, and we are collaborating with the Australian airports and both, state and federal government offices to promote and facilitate Indian carriers to fly to Australia. How would you like to describe your management style? Every member of a cricket team has a role to play. Someone is a specialist opening batsman, then there’s someone whose job is to hold the innings together, someone else is assigned the task to slog and up the ante, and then you have bowlers who bowl swing, fast, medium pace, or right and left arm spin. Likewise, I personally believe that each person in an organisation possesses certain strengths and there’s a reason for recruiting a person for a particular role. It’s upto the leader or the captain, to trust the abilities of that individual, provide clarity of role and objectives, harness their skill-sets by providing constructive feedback, and then allowing the person to complete the task to the best of his or her abilities. I believe in pushing a person into the pool, and letting him learn how to swim, rather than handholding him to complete his task. How has the industry in India evolved? Whilst travelling overseas

was once restricted to the affluent and super rich, it’s now becoming a part of every person’s lifestyle. Travel has evolved from being a luxury to a necessity. The consumer on the other hand has also evolved from a tourist to an experiential traveller, from one who would travel to tick the boxes and pose in front of the icons, to someone who immerses himself into the local culture, tradition, and cuisine. Marketing has also seen a significant shift from the traditional, above the line advertising, to a new- age digital ecosystem, leveraging the power of social media, and penetration of hand held devices. We are now moving towards behavioural and psychographic targeting, and in this day and age we are now able to identify potential travellers through predictive analytics and algorithms. Due to low entry barriers, fragmentation has also seen a rise with a drastic increase in
the number of mom and pop stores and independent business units mushrooming in each city, which has led to the co-existence of the traditional and online travel agencies (at least in the short-term), in a market that has very high service delivery expectations. With 1.6 billion domestic trips and over 23 million outbound visits, travel continues and will remain a sunrise industry. However, it hasn’t attracted the best of talent and is not one of the sought- after career options, as it has largely remained unorganised. The onus of building travel and hospitality as a lucrative career option rests in the hands of the industry leaders. Is there an interesting experience you wish to share that was defining in terms of an achievement at TA? It all began in December 2010, when a high-powered, eight-member CEO delegation comprising of the heads of Aus-
tralian state and territory tourism organisations, and led by Tourism Australia’s exchairman, Geoff Dixon, visited India on a fact-finding mission, to speak to the industry experts, and understand India’s potential. What transpired after their visit, after thorough research and industry consultation, was the launch of the India 2020 Strategic Plan in June 2012, to capitalise on the opportunity offered by the Indian outbound market. Since then, meticulous planning and superior execution of strategies have led to the achievement of the India 2020 goals, three years ahead of its target date. What hobbies do you pursue? I am a passionate cricketer who loves to play a T20 game every weekend. I stay fit through regular walks and jogs. And I try to remain calm by practising yoga and meditation, that also helps me to maintain a positive outlook at all times.
