LOWER LEVEL

A Subterranean Statement

With an over-the-top video wall, spa wing, and spectacular wine room, this lower level rises up as the epitome of luxury. BY JEANA HARRIS

LOWER LEVEL

WHEN THE Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home team put their heads together to conceptualize and lay out the enormous lower level, they landed on a simple—yet not easily attained— concept for how they wanted it to feel: calm. Rarely does a house take care of its owners, but here, it does. The showpiece of the lower level is the wellness wing, where multiple rooms are designed for the sole purpose of self-care. “I think it’s one of the main features of the home. It’s a standout that hasn’t been done to this level,” designer Jennifer O’Connor of Dare 2 Design says. Of course, in a home of this magnitude, the enviable features don’t stop there. The lower level also contains a state-of-the-art video wall, a bar with bourbon and wine rooms, a speakeasy lounge, a game area, and

pool facilities. The overall home color scheme persists here, but the hues are deeper and richer to create that unspoken aura of lush coziness.

A World of Well-Being Continuing the theme of making the Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home feel like a luxury hotel, the positioning of the wellness wing makes it clear that it is its own important, separate space. This was achieved by designing a large, open doorway followed by a long hallway that splits off into gym and wellness areas. Builder Scott Bates of Scott Bates Custom Homes explains, “Our wellness wing is sauna, steam shower, cold plunge, massage room, so all four. It’s legitimately like a spa. We’ve got everything in this one.” From softer, ambient lighting to the choice of warm-toned tile, every

selection in the space prioritizes relaxation. Twelve-foot ceilings throughout create an airy scale, so nothing ever feels closed off or tight. Natural light remains thanks to clerestory windows placed above the cold plunge and in the massage room.

A New Era of Home Automation Bates recalls seeing a video taken in a commercial building that showed a massive, ever-changing video wall with vibrant colors and crisp images. “It was just insane, and we thought it’d be a unique thing to put in a show home. It’s going to be something people haven’t seen before,” he explains. Bates enlisted Intelligent Living Solutions to create the complex display, as well as handle all automation for the entire house. Though its seamlessness makes it look like one gigantic screen—

LOWER LEVEL

stretching across a whopping 20 feet—the video wall is comprised of numerous, small LCD panels that snap together. It was designed with soothing selections, such as a rushing waterfall, in mind to set a peaceful tone before entering the wellness wing. But the content that appears on the screen can be anything the homeowner chooses, from the Indy 500 to the swirling mist of a mountaintop or large-scale art.

The Family Room At the foot of the stairs, the lower level’s family room opens as an inviting realm of relaxation. Wooden beams overhead add natural texture, which is further enhanced by an eye-catching display under the stairs: a rock bed ţĆĆÕÑ Ŗõļñ ĆõŕÕ ĭòčļĴʞ ĭİĔŕõÑõčë ² ĆŁĴñ pop of green and enhancing the Zen atmosphere. “Water, plants, natural stone, that’s what this whole house is about,” O’Connor says. a lounge-y vibe. You’re going to see cozy furniture and just a space to hang out,” O’Connor says. The wine room is glass-enclosed. It includes ample bottle storage with a built-in niche to showcase especially impressive vintages, while backlit lighting illuminates the entire collection. The bourbon area is open because the team wanted it to feel like an extension of the bar. So while the whole wall looks connected, there’s actually a hidden door in the mix that leads to storage. The lounge area prioritizes sitting together to enjoy a generous pour and good conversation. ĔşŘ ļĔŁËñÕĴ ĆõăÕ ² òİëÕʞ Ť²ļ ŕÕĆŕÕļ sofa, three lounge chairs, sconce lighting, and a picture frame TV all contribute to the laid-back ambiance.

The Pool Facilities Allowing convenient access from both inside the home and outside from the pool, the pool bath is split into two sections—a powder room on one side

and linen room on the other connected via a pocket door. Here, the design brief is all about pattern play. Though the color palette remains in line with the rest of the home’s warm neutrals, cʿ ĔččĔİ ĴÕĆÕËļÕÑ ļõĆÕ ŤĔĔİõčë ļñ²ļ looks like terrazzo. Though separated by a dividing wall, the covering transitions seamlessly across the two rooms, ensuring a sense of cohesiveness. “Connecting spaces was really important for us to accomplish in this home. We wanted everything large and connected,” O’Connor says. Grounding Force The Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home exterior connects the natural world to the human experience. BY JULIE YOUNG

IM | DREAM HOME 2026

TO CREATE outdoor living space that accentuates the architectural details of the 2026 Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home, PJE Lawn Care & Landscaping founder Phil Ennis says it was important to showcase the home’s modern Texas Hill Country design without overpowering it. “We tried to think outside the box and create a full sensory experience in terms of hardscapes, plant material, and features,” he says.

A Warm Welcome That experience begins in the motor court where Ennis crafted a calm, inviting atmosphere for the eyes and ears. Featuring cobblestone pavers from Hardscapes, the driveway also incorporates some grassy areas to help break up the stonework and soften the space. The home’s recessed alcove offered the opportunity to create a large, raised bed that is home to an array of structured, low-maintenance,

native plants, as well as a specimen tree that is lit up at night. “Our vibe was to stand out against what everyone else has done,” he Ĵ²ŘĴʣ ʼVõăÕ āÕŖÕĆİŘ Ĕč ²č ĔŁļţ ļʞ ŘĔŁİ landscape may not make you look prettier, but it can bring the whole look together.” The raised bed leads to the showstopping, one-of-a-kind ÕčļİŘŖ²Ř ŖñÕİÕ Ť Ĕ²ļõčë êİĔčļ ĭĔİËñ steps are girded by a wraparound water feature with three colorchanging bubblers that provide a soothing sound as you enter the home. “It is a really cool feature that you just don’t see everywhere,” Ennis adds.

Treehouse Terrace The main level terrace not only extends the Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home’s living space, but it also offers a great view of the golf course from high up in the tree canopy. “We tried to think outside the box and create a full sensory experience in terms of hardscapes, plant material, and features.” —PHIL ENNIS the view. A bar window extends the kitchen into the outdoor area so food and drinks are readily available without the need for an additional galley, and the terrace is perfectly aligned to overlook the pool deck, as well as the naturalized landscaping throughout the property. “We have kept everything linear and modern to keep up with the architectural style of Steve Goldberg’s design while capturing the best views and guiding people’s eyes to the best features of the home,” Ennis says. Designer Jennifer O’Connor of Dare 2 Design says it was key that the

home’s outdoor living spaces were thoughtfully considered and that each piece was chosen with intention. Õ˲ŁĴÕ ² ñĔČÕʿĴ Ť ĔŖ ĴñĔŁĆÑ ÕŗļÕčÑ from the front door to the handrail on the outside patio, she wanted each item to speak the same language as the interior appointments and the warm neutrals, natural wood tones, and clean, elevated lines that evoke effortless luxury. “On the main level, that deep sectional with cream colored linen, a teak base, and cloud-soft cushions, is the anchor. It’s generous and

grounded at the same time,” O’Connor says. “The coffee table is my favorite moment in the whole space: a woodframed tray with inserts and succulent planters built right in. It’s organic and unexpected. The chevron rug adds just enough pattern to keep the eye moving without competing with anything.”

Great Gathering Spaces If the main level is where you host, the lower level is where you live. Designed for large gatherings, the porch and pool area features a convenient grill island for outdoor ËĔĔăõčëʣ VõăÕ ļñÕ Č²õč ŤĔĔİ ļÕİݲËÕ above it, the space can be used as a

four-season room thanks to retractable screens and vinyl panels. O’Connor notes that the lower level offers a more intimate and resort-like feel, extending the lounge onto the covered porch. While she went in for big items on the main level terrace, for the lower level, she introduced a woven rope sofa chair that brings a rougher, more artisanal texture into the mix, chunky block side tables, and a tone-on-tone rug with a quiet but eye-catching weave. “It’s the tactile contrast that makes both pieces feel even better,” she says. “Every texture has a reason to be there.” Ennis says one of the unique features of this lower-level party space is the duo of rain curtains that empty into the hot tub for additional ambiance and mood. When the rain curtains are not in use, the two-part hot tub õčËĆŁÑÕĴ ŤĔ²ļõčë ĴļÕĭĴ ļñ²ļ ĆÕ²Ñ ĔŁļ ļĔ the pool deck, which affords another great view of the golf course and ĔĭĭĔİļŁčõļõÕĴ ļĔ ÕčāĔŘ ļñÕ ţİÕ êÕ²ļŁİÕĴ that are part of the overall space.

“We really wanted to challenge the concept of what a pool deck could be, so there is actually more grass than hardscape in this area, making it a little softer than what you might expect,” Ennis points out. “We also have ² ţİÕĭõļ čÕ²İ ļñÕ pool deck, as well as ļñİÕÕ ţİÕ êÕ²ļŁİÕĴ on the far side of the pool and several large evergreens that make the neighboring house disappear from view.” An outdoor deck offers another chance to get closer to nature and to access the private putting green halfway down the hill. “The outdoor features and landscape are the icing on the cake,” Ennis says. “They really needed to be something special.”
