Contrary to the general perception that he will find it hard to get anyone to sign his nomination papers, he found supporters in 15 of his leaders. Tharoor sprang a huge surprise and reportedly his supporters are from all sections of the faction-ridden party in Kerala, including seasoned veterans and Youth Congress leaders. On Monday, Tharoor made an emergency visit to Palakkad and briefly met Rahul Gandhi, who is leading the Bharat Jodo yatra. It was during his visit he managed to swell his support base. Incidentally, from Kerala 328 Congress leaders are in the list of voters. With Antony expressing his displeasure and AICC general secretary
(Organisation) K.C.Venugopal also not having any regards for Tharoor, the general impression was he will bite the dust and end up in an embarrassing position, but with 15 frontline leaders signing, things appear to have turned in his favour. A media critic on condition of anonymity said this is perhaps the first time in several years there has been a challenge to the diktats of the Gandhi family. “None should forget it was none other than Antony who led a faction out from the Congress party after differences of opinion surfaced with Indira Gandhi in the late seventies and joined hands with the CPI-M here. Now the same Antony is opposing someone who showed the guts to announce his candidature and this is politics,” said the critic. Friday is the last day for filing of nominations and all eyes are on Tharoor, who has managed to cross a major hurdle, much against the wishes of Antony and Venugopal.

Canberra, Sep 21 (IANS) The return of international migration has driven Australia’s population growth to its highest level in two years, official data revealed on Wednesday.

It represents an increase of about 239,800 people -- or 0.9 per cent -- from March 2021. That figure marks Australia’s highest population growth over a 12-month period since September 2020. By comparison, in the 12 months to March 2021, the population grew by 0.15 per cent amid strict Covid-19 border restrictions. Of the 239,800 people added to the population, net overseas migration (NOM) accounted for 109,600 -- or 45.7 per cent. “After two years of mostly low or no population growth, overseas migration is again a significant contributor
However, the net migrant intake remained lower than pre-pandemic levels, which ranged from 238,000 to 260,000. There were 309,300 births and 179,100 deaths in Australia in the year to March 2022. The number of deaths was 10 per cent higher than in 2020-21. Ankita murder: Last rites held finally, NH 58 blocked in protest
Srinagar (Uttarakhand), Sep 25 (IANS) People’s anger over the murder of Ankita Bhandari, who worked as a receptionist at a resort in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district and was reportedly being forced to provide “special services” to guests, continued with the National Highway (NH) 58 being blocked in protest, even as her last rites were finally conducted on Sunday evening.
Her body was brought to the NIT Ghat here and consigned to flames amid the presence of a large number of people. A large crowd, comprising students, political activists and common people, had earlier gathered in large numbers at the mortuary of the base hospital where her body was kept. Pan-India ED, NIA raids at PFI premises
New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) were conducting pan-India raids on Thursday at the premises of the Popular Front of India (PFI), including the private residence of chairman OMA Salam in Manjeri, Kerala Sources have claimed that more than 100 PFI leaders have been

detained by the two probe agencies, but there has been no official confirmation by the ED and NIA. Meanwhile, PFI workers have taken to the streets in protest against the ongoing raids. While the ED is investigating a money laundering case, NIA is questioning PFI leaders in connection with a terror related case. Further details are awaited.
