n the heart of South Florida, Dr. Sherrie Poitier-Liscombe has spent nearly three decades nurturing young minds. We had the opportunity to have an indepth conversation with Sherrie as she describes her journey as an educator, counselor and now award-winning children’s author. As an educator, counselor, and mentor in Broward County Public Schools, she sees firsthand the challenges children face — from bullying and social pressure to questions of identity and belonging. Sherrie has also witnessed something else: their resilience, their light, and their ability to grow when given the right tools. That belief inspired her to create The Adventures of Sherrie and Chubbie, winner of multiple children’s and teen categories in both the Independent Press Award and the New York City Big Book Award. The series has blossomed into a movement of hope, healing, and empowerment. Today, the series includes not only storybooks and coloring books but also the newly launched Sherrie and Chubbie Teen Life Series, which explores topics like mental health, self-care, and social responsibility. There’s even a Sherrie doll — a tangible reminder for children that imagination and faith can make dreams come true.

A Dream Born from Love and Legacy When asked what first inspired her to write, Sherrie’s answer begins with her mother.

“My mom had written a book about me when I was about five or six,” she recalls. “At that time, there was no self-publishing, and several companies told her there was no audience for it. She passed away after my first year of college, but I made a promise

to myself that one day, her dream of me being in a book would come to pass.” Years later, that promise became a mission. Armed with new tools and encouragement from friends on social media, Sherrie decided to bring her mother’s dream to life. In 2016, she published the first installment of The Adventures of Sherrie and Chubbie. What started as a personal tribute soon became a beloved children’s series that continues to grow.

Disguising Therapy with Hope Despite the serious themes, Sherrie’s books are joyful, vibrant, and full of humor — because she knows that children learn best when they’re engaged.

The title characters — a bright, curious girl (Sherrie) and her lovable pet (Chubbie)— are drawn straight from Sherrie’s own childhood.

“I feel like anything can be talked about and taught through,” she explains. “I keep that in mind, and think about the ways that I got the kids that I’ve worked with to engage, participate in what I’m trying to do, and move forward. Then I give them a chance to tell me, if this were you, how would this help you? I give them an opportunity to give me their input. I’m disguising therapy with hope.”

“My mom thought reading was extremely important. She took us to the library all the time.” Sherrie continued, “Growing up, my mom and grandmother were always giving me quotes and lessons to live by. Quotes of things that were going to help me be successful in life. You can see how driven Sherrie is even as a little child, because that’s what was instilled in me. Sherrie befriends animals. You actually get to see how I start out feeling lonely, not really happy. Then, I get my first true pet, Chubby, my bestie. Together, they go through life’s ups and downs, meeting friends and learning lessons along the way.”

Her faith also runs through every story. “Faith gives Sherrie the strength to form a plan and move forward,” she says of her main character. “In every book, I include one image of Sherrie praying. Because prayer is her strongest weapon.”

Writing for a Generation in Need

Those traits became the foundation for the Sherrie character — determined, hopeful, and always learning. It’s easy to see why readers connect with them. Sherrie’s storytelling is filled with warmth and optimism, a reflection of her own personality. “I call myself a ‘hope whisperer,’” she says with a smile. “These books are definitely optimistic.”

Sherrie’s new Teen Life series brings those lessons to an older audience, directly addressing the mental health challenges many young people face today. “A few years ago, there were a lot of teen suicides in our area,” she says. “I thought I would pen a story that shows teens there are other choices, better choices. There’s prayer. A lot of kids don’t realize that prayer is a coping skill.”

Faith, Resilience, and Real Life For Sherrie, writing is more than storytelling — it’s a ministry. With a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy, she brings her understanding of emotional growth and healing into every page. Her years as a counselor have given her deep insight into the struggles children and teens face today.

The Adventures of Sherrie and Chubbie and the Teen series are testament that prayer, faith, community, and mental health support can work together. Kids are offered hope and are shown that asking for help is okay. The series promotes diversity and encourages the beauty of embracing each other’s differences.

“I try to tackle issues I know that kids that I work with are dealing with,” she explains. “All of my characters are my former students — and in the audiobooks, they even voice their own characters.”

“Everyone feels like they can connect to the characters in the story,” Sherri explains. “Sometimes the kids do not deal with other kids because they feel they’re too different. They all have similar problems and issues.”

Through her stories, Sherrie addresses real-world challenges: bullying, anxiety, depression, peer pressure, tolerance and the silence that often surrounds them. “Sometimes kids are being bullied but don’t say anything because they think ‘snitching’ isn’t cool,” she says. “Others are dealing with depression but don’t realize that’s they are depressed. Kids need to understand that there’s nothing wrong with getting help.”

Through these books, she gives teens permission to feel, to speak, and to seek help without shame. “I tell my students all the time — you don’t have to go through this alone,” she says. “Sherrie is meant to speak hope into every life.”

Gabby: What inspired you to pen your first book in the series in 2016? How many books are there currently in the series?

Sherrie: Several companies felt like there was no audience for it. The book was published in honor of my deceased mother. My mom had written a book about me when I was probably about 5 or 6 years old. At that time, there was no self-publishing. Publishing houses felt there was no audience for a story about a little black girl; they refused to publish it. I wrote what I could remember and added what I could to make the story relatable. It is an amazing story about friendship that demonstrates the miraculous love of a

Sherrie: My mom thought that reading was extremely important. She and my grandmother would always give me quotes that were going to help me be successful in life. You can see how driven Sherrie is, even as a little child, because that’s what was instilled in me. Sherrie is based on me: my life, my purpose, my mom’s vision of me. She is also who God created her to be and represents His image

for the world. As she walks in purpose, God uses her to humanize Himself among humanity. Chubbie is a “Dog.” Sherrie’s trusted friend who represents “God” and how God wants to befriend, protect, love, and be by Sherrie’s side through it all. The stories are compilations of stories from my former students, myself, and my family. It gives you an eye into how children can and do live, love, and adventure.

can say that my work is definitely a reflection of me on paper. It is genuine, it is credible. I am extremely happy that God chose me to get these stories out. I am grateful, therefore I walk in gratefulness… purposely and intentionally all the time. Gabby: In your position as a counselor and educator, how were you inspired to tackle issues such as depression, social media, mental health in your new Teen series?

Gabby: The Adventures of Sherrie and Chubbie and the Teen series, tackle so many issues that are very real and relevant to children and teens. You’ve been a counselor and an educator for nearly 30 years. How has your life journey influenced these stories that you create?

Sherrie: A few years ago, there were a lot of suicides in this area. I thought if I pen a story that shows teens how they can get out of what they’re in without suicide, that’s what I can do. The last few years I’ve tried to tell the world that there are other choices, better choices. There’s prayer. A lot of kids don’t realize that prayer is a coping skill. Sherrie shows that there’s nothing wrong with trying to do things the way society does, do it through mental health services, but she always has her opportunity to get on her knees and cry. In every book I always have one image of her. Her strongest weapon against what’s going on in this world is her prayer.

Sherrie: My characters are my former students, so they demonstrate their personalities, their woes, their triumphs, and their voices. On the audiobooks they are voicing their own character. My teen series is the most “experienced” issues that we are trying to address with our youth, but are failing because of the stigma, shame, and ignorance of how youth are affected by what they are navigating. Many adults would rather pretend their youth was okay, though they can sense they are not. No one wants to admit they cannot help their child without contributions from outside professionals. There used to be a village mentality in raising our children, but now it is about whose child is better, or hiding the dysfunction that plagues our young people, due to the unfiltered exposure they have to the world’s ills. The stories are the result of informal group sessions (life sessions) held in my office, as well as watching things unfold on TikTok and Facebook. I am penning what I have seen work right before my very eyes.

Gabby: Family plays a strong role in your books — grandparents, siblings, shared responsibilities. Why was it important for you to include those dynamics in your storytelling? Sherrie: My family is extremely close. We are a ministry legacy. My grandfather was the first black overseer for the African American Branch of the Church of God. The library of Liberty University (a Christian College) is named after my grandfather due to all his work in expanding the ministry of God. He was a church restorer, and if a ministry needed rescuing, they sent him. We pray together every second and fourth Saturday on Zoom, during November, and we pray every day at 5:30 AM. We make intentional strides to be together, and we spend holidays as groups, so we are always in each other’s lives. We have a group text where we send birthday wishes, though there are over 200 of us in the close-knit group. That is how we were reared: to care for and about each other above all.

Gabby: How do you weave important themes such as respect, citizenship, tolerance, honesty, faith, and perseverance while keeping it entertaining and engaging? Sherrie: One of my gifts is adapting my message to resonate with the intended audience. My humor is insightful, and because it is God inspired I can trust it, so I let it flow. Anyone who knows me

Gabby: How do you hope that your books shape the next generation of leaders?

Sherrie: My main goal is to help kids get to their purpose. You can’t allow the world and what’s going on in the world to get in the way of what you’re supposed to be doing. I want this to be something that is preparing them to take the helm and to be responsible to their community. Instead of complaining, do something.

Adventures of Parenting on Purpose. Despite how you believe you became a parent, whether intentionally or by “mistake,” it is God’s choice to allow you to be a parent, so perhaps you should allow God to guide you. I am not a preacher or expert, but I believe that the information offered will shed light on how to be the parent God intended. After this book, I plan to finish The Adventures …..Education Godz Way. It is a telling tale about how God used me to achieve miraculous feats in education because of my heart for children/youth. I discuss how I did things His way, not how society wanted me to, thus I achieved results that cannot be duplicated.

Gabby: Your stories help children talk about real-life situations. Have you heard any feedback from parents, teachers, or kids that especially touched you? Sherrie: I have heard stories of life-changing experiences, seen students ask for counseling, and been a witness to recoveries because of what they have gathered from the stories. The most remarkable aspect is the number of children, teens, and adults who aspire to become authors due to these series. I am receiving emails and calls about penning and being part of the publishing world because they see the good that can be accomplished by writing. My former students come back and tell me how these books about their stories comfort and excite their own children.

Gabby: If you could leave one lasting message with every child who reads your books, what would it be? Sherrie: Every child has a purpose. There’s no reason for you to feel fearful or doubtful or like your life doesn’t matter because it does. Other people are in need of what you have. Sherrie is meant to speak hope into every life.

Gabby: What advice would you give to parents or teachers who want to use your books to spark conversations about values and character? Sherrie: Pray first. These books are a way to allow children and youth to see that you care, not that you want to control them. Read the book, see what has been done in the story, and if you have similar ideals, use direct information from the book. Know your audience… what is the best way to approach your child? God has given you all you need to parent them. Be transparent and willing to explain and explore the conversation rather than judge.
