Illuminating the Darkness:
A Conversation with Ted Olczak
I
had the great privilege of sitting down with Xue Mo at this year’s London Book Fair. Xue Mo, formerly known as Chen Kaihong, was born in Liangzhou, Gansu province. Among other positions, Xue Mo is a cultural scholar, China's National First-class Writer, and Vice President of Gansu Writers Association.
Xue Mo’s best known work is his Desert Trilogy. He dedicated 12 years to writing “Desert Rites”, the first novel in the series. It depicts the life of a typical rural family in China’s western provinces during the second half of the twentieth century. After it was published in 2000, Xue Mo became famous overnight. Following the critical and commercial success of “Desert Rites”, Xue Mo wrote “Desert Hunters”, a multi-character fable set around a watering hole known as the ‘Pig’s Belly Well’. The novel examines the conflict between humans and nature in their struggle for survival. The final novel in the trilogy, “White Tiger Pass”, explores the cultural psychology of people living in western China, and focuses around the lives of three women, Lan Lan, Ying and Yue – characters also encountered in his short story collection, “Selected Stories by Xue Mo”. His works are mainly characterized by the culture of western China and contain the essence of Oriental civilization. He is now focused on the theme of one’s ultimate Transcendence. In our conversation, Xue Mo emphasized that the power of love and wisdom can transform the world. Our conversation, through his translator, unveiled that readers seek happiness and respect through literature and that more published works can lead to a more balanced world. Xue Mo feels that writing can illuminate societal darkness and that cultural reflections are essential for understanding global issues. Despite widespread violence, hope persists in knowledge. In the end, the continued importance of writing, sharing messages, and engaging in conversations can inspire collective action.

A
ustralian author Anita Selzer’s latest book, The Female Gaze in Art & Photography is the winner of the 2024 Independent Press Award in the Fine Arts Category.
Anita is the author of thirteen adult and children’s non-fiction books, including Reframing Beauty and I Am Woman. Her work focuses on women, gender culture and history. Anita was a lecturer in politics and English and worked in women's affairs in the Victorian Premier's Department as an administrative officer. She has also been a book reviewer for Cambridge University Press and the peer-reviewed journal Gender and Education. She has earned a BA, Dip Ed, Master of Education, PhD in Education and Grad Dip in Women's Studies at universities in Melbourne, and was awarded the Peter Fensham Education Scholarship 1989 at Monash University for her PhD work on gender, history and education. Gabby: I'm not familiar with the term “female gaze.” Please share what it means in the context of art and photography. Anita: The female gaze is really about a female way of looking and seeing. So the artists and the photographers in this book have brought their way of seeing to creating the works that they're creating. It comes from their experience, their subjectivity, the way they look at the world, the way they experience life, and issues close to their heart. Gabby: You've said that the female gaze respects women's bodies without necessarily sexualizing them, as the male gaze has done. How does the work of female artists and photographers differ from the male gaze and why is this so important? Anita: Catherine Del Barton, an Australian artist, has pictures of women and breasts exposed. But what she's all about is that women are the givers of life that they bear children. They nurture children by breastfeeding. They sustain children. So it's not a sexualized image. It's coming from how she sees women and part of their role in life. The male gaze really sexualizes women. It will present a woman very provocatively, sexually and objectifies a woman, whereas the female gaze doesn't. It shows bodies in a different light. 9

Gabby: How can the female gaze in art and photography contribute to broader conversations about gender equality and social change.
Gabby: You showcase contemporary artists, but the utilization of the female gaze by female artists, as you point out, is not a novel or unique concept. How has the representation of women in art and photography evolved over the years from the perspective of the female gaze?
Anita: We need to see more women having a say in what's hanging up in galleries. There are, it is changing, and that is happening. If we have wider representation of women and art in galleries it cannot lead to gender equality, but it can lead to discussions about it.
Anita: I think in the last five, ten years you're getting a lot more women's exhibitions. Men have been the dominant, they've been the artists, they've been the collectors, they've been the selectors of art. Now that the female gaze has been evolving I think we're going to see more and more exhibitions of women's art. It's global. That's really positive because it's a whole different way of seeing and creating.
Discussions and ambitions. This is the way forward. We need to have both men and women's art because they're different. The difference doesn't mean one is better than the other. they should be accepted as equal in that way.
Gabby: You are working on volume two and have plans for volume three. What do you hope readers take away from and are reminded of with The Female Gaze In Art and Photography?
Gabby: You showcased the art and photography of 20 female artists and photographers from around the world: Africa, Asia, Australia, of course, Europe, the Middle East and the US, many of whom are unknown artists and photographers. Can you share your process Anita, and how you went about choosing these particular artists to showcase?
Anita: I hope they have some appreciation of the works that these women have created. They've been wonderful.
Anita: It was very personal and subjective. I started reading in this area. First of all, in Girl on Girl, Charlotte Vincent wrote about 40 women artists and photographers from around the world using this female gaze. I became captivated and interested but I found the text was quite brief. I thought, maybe I can extend and build on this and write a little bit more, and provide more text, more visual images and create a bigger book.
Women's art, until the 70s didn't really take off. Volume two shows amazing artists in the 16th century who broke barriers and who became successful artists, but they were few and far between because it wasn't considered a woman's place to do that kind of thing. We've shifted in our roles and the way we live our lives now in the 21st century. Women don't just want to be tied to the apron anymore.
So she really got me into it. The work of the women I chose had to touch me, I had to feel something when I saw their work, and I had to understand what they were on about using their female gaze. I wanted global representation.
It’s a documentation, a recognition, and a visibility of all that.
