Welcome to the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts! Thank you so much for choosing to attend the LBC. We always strive to offer a variety of performances and the best service to our patrons, and hope you have a wonderful time. Don’t hesitate to alert one of our front-of-house staff if they can be of assistance. As you can see, we are making additional improvements to the facility, in our continued efforts to enhance and improve your LBC experience. This next phase of renovations— expected to be completed in December of 2017—calls for the following changes to this 43 year-old structure: • Construction of two exterior elevator towers and glass vestibule hallways to provide easy access to the balcony level, for the first time in the Center’s history. • Increased bathroom capacity with two new ADA restrooms (one men’s and one women’s) on both the north and south sides of the second floor, as well as ADA upgrades to the existing balcony restrooms. • Construction of two built-in and ADA-compliant concession areas on the ground floor level, along with construction of a new balcony concession area. • Remodeling of the multi-use Fireside Room. • Installation of 1st and 2nd floor sprinklers to the Lytton Rancheria Grand Lobby. • New dual-paned windows and doors in the main building. • New roof, sight screens, and paint for the entire building. Please excuse our dust during the transition when you come back to enjoy other offerings. Latino Advisory Council The LBC’s Latino Advisory Council is working to strengthen ties with Sonoma County’s growing Latino population. From advising on campus signage to providing vision and implementation support for our annual Fiesta de Independencia and Posada Navideña events, the Latino Advisory Council is helping ensure that our organization is relevant, welcoming, and accessible to everyone in our community. 42nd Annual San Francisco Comedy Competition Semi-Finals

The San Francisco Comedy Competition is one of the most prestigious comedy contests in North America— launching the careers of people like Ellen DeGeneres and Louis CK. It’s an outrageously funny evening where you will see the comedy stars of tomorrow competing for their chance at fame and fortune. Hundreds of comedians audition each year to compete in the San Francisco International Stand Up Comedy Competition. Only 30 are chosen. In its first year, Robin Williams came in 2nd. Many talented comedians have since emerged from this annual event to become major stars. It could be argued that The Comedy Competition helps turn them into diamonds as it is a true contest that develops its contestants by forcing them to adjust to a variety of audiences—in comedy clubs, colleges, casinos and theaters—while enduring the strain of an extended road trip. 1977 Comedy Competition Champ Dana Carvey went on to “Saturday Night Live.” 1979 Champ Marsha Warfield went on to “Night Court” to star as Roz the Bailiff. 1982 Finalist Kevin Pollak has achieved a major film career, as has 1987 Finalist Rob Schneider. Two first runners up—Ellen DeGeneres in 1985 and Mark Curry in 1989—landed their own TV series. Fame has not always come quickly but eventually as in the case of 1991 Finalist Louis C.K. who now claims the ultimate credit: a self-titled TV series. With this history and much more, the San Francisco Comedy Competition has a wellearned reputation as an important showcase of young entertainers who will make it.

ICON Concerts Presents Jo Koy

Jo Koy has come a long way from his modest beginnings at a Las Vegas coffee house. As one of today’s vastly growing stand-­up comedians, Koy sells-­out comedy clubs and theaters across the nation with his infectious, explosive energy onstage. The comedian pulls inspiration from his family, specifically his son that inspires humor across all boundaries. Koy, who was raised in Tacoma, WA, credits his mother for his comedic and acting talents. She encouraged him to participate in school talent shows and to hold impromptu performances for his family and friends. This loving support led to performances at a Las Vegas coffee house, and inspired a move to Los Angeles. In 2005, Koy had the “opportunity of a lifetime,” when he performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He became one of a select few comics to receive a standing ovation on the show. Since then, Koy has had two highly-­rated and successful comedy specials on Comedy Central, Don’t Make Him Angry and Lights Out. In 2017, Koy released his 3rd comedy special, Jo Koy: Live from Seattle as a Netflix Original. Today, the comedian tours across the nation, and can be heard as a weekly guest on the popular podcast, The Adam Carolla Show. Koy recently joined the Podcast One family and hosts the weekly podcast, The Koy Pond. For more info on the podcast and tour dates, please visit: Jokoy.com. Symphony Pops Series: What a Wonderful World: A Tribute to Louis Armstrong

A powerhouse trumpeter, gifted with a soulful voice and a charismatic onstage swagger, Byron Stripling joins the Santa Rosa Symphony for a tribute to Louis Armstrong that is both electrifying and heartfelt. With his engaging rapport, jazzy vocals and virtuosic trumpet sounds, Byron dazzles audiences across the country. Since his Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, Stripling has become a pops orchestra favorite. Currently, Stripling serves as artistic director and conductor of the highly acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra. Musical hits from the Armstrong songbook and beyond include “What a Wonderful World,” “Saint James Infirmary,” “Royal Garden Blues,” “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans,” “Hello Dolly,” and “Basin Street Blues.” With his signature version of “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In” to close the show, Byron celebrates the spirit of the great Louis Armstrong and is sure to leave you dancing in the aisles!

Creating S-Town: A New Way to Tell a Story, An Evening with Brian Reed

Host and Co-Creator of the groundbreaking podcast S-Town. Moderated by Sandhya Dirks S-Town was downloaded 40 million times in its first month, setting a new record in podcasting, and is currently the number one podcast on iTunes. Reed spent more than 3 years reporting and writing S-Town, which began when a man named John B. McLemore asked Reed to investigate an alleged murder in his small Alabama town. The series won widespread popular and critical acclaim for elevating audio storytelling into the realm of great literature. As senior producer of This American Life, Reed oversees the editorial direction of the program with host and executive producer Ira Glass. In his seven years with the show, Reed created some of its most ambitious stories, including “The Secret Recordings of Carmen Segarra,” an investigation into the Federal Reserve’s supervision of Goldman Sachs; “Cops See It Differently,” a nuanced look at the relationship between African Americans and the police; “Abdi and the Golden Ticket,” which follows a Somali refugee desperately trying to get to America; and “What Happened at Dos Erres,” the story of a massacre in Guatemala and its reverberations decades later. Reed has investigated multiple sketchy FBI operations, as well as produced stories about strange coincidences and car salesmen on Long Island and a turkey who terrorized a neighborhood before getting murdered by police. His journalism has helped an immigrant gain asylum in the U.S. and prompted a Senate Committee to grill the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Before joining This American Life as an intern in 2010, Reed reported and produced for NPR as one of their Kroc Fellows and their first Above the Fray Fellow. Reed has received the Dart Award for Reporting on Trauma, the Overseas Press Club Award, and the Peabody Award.

Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

50 years ago, singer-songwriter Stephen Still met singersongwriter Judy Collins, known for her piercing ocean blue eyes. Their tumultuous love affair would later be immortalized by Stills with his composition “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” performed by Crosby, Stills & Nash on their landmark debut. Both artists would go on to shape modern music with visionary approaches, but Stills and Collins’ short fiery union remains a transformative era for the two artists. Now, the two icons of folk will celebrate the golden anniversary of their formative time together. Their joint tour marks the first time ever Stills and Collins have been onstage together. For this once in a lifetime experience, the two music legends will pull from their rich catalogs, debut songs from their upcoming album, due out September 22, 2017, and share warm and intimate stories from their journeys and the 1960s folk and Laurel Canyon scenes they helped build. Stills and Collins met in 1967 and dated for two years. Stills wrote and demoed his legendary love song to Collins right after he left Buffalo Springfield, before he joined CSN. “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” is a fivesection romantic epic brimming with heartfelt sincerity. The song has been ranked #418 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time Poll. Stills is known for his work with Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and his solo work. In addition to “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” Still is best known for the hits “For What It’s Worth” by Buffalo Springfield and “Love The One You’re With” from his solo debut, Stephen Stills. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and ranked #28 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “The 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time.” He also has the added distinction of being the first artist to be inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame twice in one night (for his work with CSN and Buffalo Springfield). Collins is known for her eclectic palette as a solo artist, melding folk, rock, classical, and jazz into a singular aesthetic. She’s earned five Grammy nominations including one in 2017 and one Grammy win. Outside of music, Collins has published two memoirs, one novel, and, in 1975, was nominated for an Academy Award for the documentary Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman. Collins is also a lifelong activist.

Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met in 1975 and they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. After late evening performances of "Jesus Christ Superstar," they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, "Love and Other Bruises" and "If You Knew Me" and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style. They made a single in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous huge venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break the U.S. market. "Lost in Love" which went Top 10 in Australia and somehow found its way to music industry executive Clive Davis in New York. Clive immediately signed Air Supply to Arista Records and in 1980, "Lost in Love" became the fastest selling single in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Now Air Supply was on their way. The second single was "All Out of Love," and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles' run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. "Lost in Love" was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies. The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock's soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell's simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply.

They become friends, beautifully melding the real and fantasy worlds while playing the characters of Belle and the Beast, and beyond their control they fall in love. Nearly 40 of Yoakam’s singles have charted, with 14 peaking in the Top 10. He received the Artist of the Year award at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards ceremony, the most prestigious award offered by the organization. In September of 2016, Yoakam released his first ever bluegrass album Swimmin’ Pools, Movie Stars… on Sugar Hill Records. “We aren’t likely to see a recording career like this again.” — The New York Times Tony Bennett, who celebrated his 90th birthday on August 3, 2016, is one of only a handful of artists to have new albums charting in each of the last seven decades. He has introduced a multitude of songs into the Great American Songbook that have since become standards, and has received 19 Grammy Awards, including for his signature song, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco.” Born in Queens in 1926, as a ten-year-old Mr. Bennett sang for New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia at the opening of the Triborough Bridge. Enlisting in the Army during World War II, he performed with military bands while stationed in Europe. His big break came in 1949 when comedian Bob Hope noticed him working with Pearl Bailey in Greenwich Village. In the new millennium, Mr. Bennett’s artistry and popularity has been higher than ever. In 2006, he released Duets: An American Classic. In 2011, Duets II debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album charts. His collaborative jazz album with Lady Gaga, “Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga: Cheek to Cheek,” released in 2014, debuted at #1 making him, at the age of 88, the oldest artist to have a #1 album. To celebrate his 90th birthday in 2016, NBC aired a two hour prime-time special, “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet To Come,” and Columbia released a companion CD. The milestone year also saw the publication of Bennett’s fifth book, “Just Getting Started.” In 1999, Mr. Bennett, along with his wife Susan Benedetto, a former public school teacher, founded Exploring the Arts (ETA) to strengthen the role of the arts in public high school education. ETA’s first endeavor was the establishment of Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, a public high school founded in 2001 in partnership with the NYC Department of Education. Our Stories: Professional Development When funding for her school’s music program dried up during the last recession, 6th grade teacher Pamell Gallagher swung into action. She felt a great sense of responsibility to bring more of the Arts, which she sees as essential to learning, into her classroom. So she began regularly taking our Professional Development Tools for Teaching workshops. Tools for Teaching — which is made possible by our donors and members — trains teachers like Pamell how to use the Arts to help students master math, science, history, reading and other subjects. The workshops are taught by visiting Kennedy Center Teaching Artists, all experts in their art form. Bringing the Arts into the classroom, Pamell says, “is about connection to self and others as well as self-expression. It’s about being human.” These days, many kids have little or no exposure to the Arts at school or in their family. “That’s why it’s so important to have an inspiring Arts-based training like this,” Pamell says. “What we learn in your workshops could make the difference between some students being exposed to the Arts or not.”

Pamell. “It’s fun, energizing, a great way to learn and touches the heart.” She uses movement and chanting as “energizers” to keep her students awake and attentive. The playful, collaborative principles of improv have helped build relationships and trust among the class. Dance and movement have helped her students embody and grasp math concepts. Poetry has helped her class speak and present with more drama and emotion. “I’m always energized and inspired by your workshops,” Pamell says. “We don’t just sit and listen, we participate as a learner so we can experience what we’ll ask our kids to do. It’s so important that students today get to experience dance, movement, drama, poetry, improv and the other arts.”

School Shows inspire students like us to learn more and do things we didn't think we could do.

Angel and Vicky, both students at Roseland Collegiate Prep, have loved to dance since they were young. Today, thanks to our members, donors, and sponsors, they both aspire to have a career as dancers. “After I saw my first dance show at the Luther Burbank Center with our school in 7th grade, I started taking dance seriously,” Angel says. He’s referring to our School Shows – nearly 30 live music, dance and theatre performances a year funded by our members, donors, and sponsors that expose close to 35,000 students, 5 -18, to the arts every year. Many of these students have never seen a live performance before. More than 40% of our School Show tickets are provided at no-cost or at a reduced price to schools and students who otherwise couldn’t afford to pay for them. Last year, when Angel and Vicky were 8th graders, we provided Roseland Collegiate Prep no-cost tickets to a dance performance that rocked their world.

The show, by the renowned New York Citybased Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company, exposed the two to contemporary dance and ballet and motivated them to expand their horizons beyond the Hip Hop dancing they’d been focusing on. “Experiencing dance as a piece of art like that has inspired me to be a better dancer” says Vicky. “I’ve noticed a big change in my dancing life.” “Seeing ballet and contemporary dance live,” adds Angel, “showed me how beautiful they really are.” Hearing the dancers talk after the performance was huge for Angel, “It was helpful to learn what they did to get to where they are now.” He’s hard at work building his skills in different dance genres and experimenting with blending contemporary dance and Hip Hop. Both Angel and Vicky are already choreographing their own dances. So it’s no surprise that at the ripe old age of 13, the two essentially ran Roseland Collegiate’s dance class last year because the school didn’t have a dance teacher yet. Both are very grateful for the School Show program. “The School Show program has had a big impact on me,” says Angel. “It’s really helped me choose what I want to do with dance.” “If it hadn’t been for the Luther Burbank Center,” adds Vicky, “I wouldn’t have seen dance performances like that.”

Visual Art at the LBC Luther Burbank Center for the Arts has long been committed to the presentation of contemporary visual art. The Center’s expansive campus currently features works by fourteen local and regional artists, including Robert Ellison, Dennis Leon, Diana Meehan, and Roberto Santo. In 2015, the Center opened a free, outdoor Sculpture Garden that serves as transition between the LBC and the Sutter Hospital campus. The current exhibit in the Sculpture Garden, “Root 101” by Bruce Johnson, is comprised of colossal wood sculptures made from salvaged old growth redwood, which he has been working with for 50 years.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Getting, and Giving, Great Experiences “Sonoma County has been good to my family,” says Bill McNeany. That’s why all his life, he’s volunteered and served on various local nonprofit boards. For the past 6 years, ushering and serving as a volunteer liaison at the LBC have been his way of giving back to the community. “We’re here to give the patrons the best experience,” says Bill. “We’re the first people they interact with.” Sometimes all that’s needed is a welcoming smile. Other times, it’s escorting patrons to their seats and providing answers and assistance that make all the difference. Ushering adds a lot to his life, Bill says. First, he’s a people person and enjoys it. “It’s also helped me continue to give back to my community, make new friends, up my networking game and mentally stretch myself now that I’m retired,” he says. Bill ushers 3 - 4 times a month, and he and his wife see 40 or 50 performances a year. His favorite memory? Seeing Tony Bennett light up the auditorium at almost 90. “The audience was all smiles that night,” he says. “It’s an experience I’ll never forget.” What’s surprised him? “I didn’t use to like jazz, but now, having been exposed to it over the years at the Center, I appreciate it.” Bill has served as a liaison on our Volunteer Advisory Committee for the past three years. This group meets monthly, shares volunteers’ feedback with the LBC Board and keeps volunteers up to date. “We’re always looking for volunteers,” Bill says – noting that LBC Volunteers are well taken care of. Each year, volunteers are invited to three town hall-style dinners, a Volunteer Appreciation Party and a Summer Picnic. And ushers are often able to work at shows they’d most like to see. After retiring from the restaurant and automobile businesses seven years ago, Bill’s scaled back. The LBC is the only volunteering he does now. He’s involved with several groups including the Italian American Club, Young Men’s Institute and Sons in Retirement. He and his wife also travel. We’re grateful Bill shares his time and skills with us. If you see him at a performance, be sure to join us in saying ”thank you” for his service. Lamona Johnson Walraven, a longtime Santa Rosa resident, was a high school teacher and counselor who came of age at a time when most women did not pursue higher education. She earned a master’s degree from UC Berkeley, then shared her love for learning with her family and students, believing that all would thrive through the benefits of an education. Through her bequest, Lamona left a lasting impact on Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, with the largest legacy gift ever received, benefitting both girls and boys through her largesse.

Ticket Fees For single ticket purchases, a 15% convenience fee will be added to your order when purchasing online or by phone (except for Family Series shows, which have a 10% fee). There are no added fees when purchasing single tickets in person at the ticket office. Ticket Limit For most performances, there is an 8 ticket limit, per household, regardless of the number of transactions. For certain shows, by artist requirement, there is a lower limit. Ticket purchases are closely monitored and any tickets purchased above the limit may be voided without notice.

Refunds and Exchanges All ticket purchases are final.

Reprints Lost, damaged, or stolen tickets may be reprinted for reserved seating performances only and will be available for pick-up one hour prior to the performance. Please present your current picture ID to the ticket office associate. There is a $2 per ticket reprint fee. Unless otherwise indicated, all seats are reserved, and switching to a seat other than the one indicated on your ticket is not allowed.

V E N U E I N F O R M AT I O N The Ruth Finley Person Theater is a flexible venue allowing for both seated and open floor configurations. When seated, the 1681-seat venue is the largest fixed seat venue in Sonoma County, and no seat is more than 75 feet from the stage. When main floor seats are removed, the open floor/seated balcony configuration raises the capacity to 2000. The theater’s unique thrust stage design, with no seat more than 75 feet from the stage, provides a level of intimacy between artists and audiences unlike any other in Northern California. For more than 30 years, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts has been the best place to see your favorite performer up close and personal.

Parking Convenient onsite parking is included with your ticket purchase.

Restrooms Restrooms are located on the main floor and balcony levels. Additional restrooms are available in the East Atrium.

Photography & Recording For most performances, as required by the artists, there is no photography or recording allowed. Please be considerate of other audience members and help us by adhering to these rules.

Selfie Sticks In the interest in the safety, security, and comfort of all patrons, Selfie Sticks are not allowed inside the building, including at performances.

Our feature performances (generally with an 8 p.m. start time) are designed for adults; children under the age of five are not permitted. Our family events with afternoon and early evening start times are suited for children and recommended for children ages 3-12. Everyone entering the theater, regardless of age, is required to have tickets. Lap passes are available for Family Fun Series performance for children under 2 years old. As a courtesy to all audience members, we ask parents and guardians to please remove children who may be disturbing others in the theater.

T H E AT E R E T I Q U E T T E Performances start promptly at their scheduled time. Please arrive with plenty of time to park and find your seat. Latecomers and those who leave their seats during a performance will be seated at the first appropriate pause in the program, as predetermined by house staff and performers. Please remember to silence all electronic devices before entering the theater. We ask that you be respectful of others and behave in an appropriate manner related to the performance you are attending. It is never permissible to stand in any aisle space. Usher and security representatives are available should you need assistance. Patrons who engage in illegal activities, are intoxicated, or are otherwise disruptive (including heckling, public nudity, and smoking in non-designated areas) will be escorted from the property without refund. Shoes and shirts are required at all events.

SCENTS/PERFUMES Many people are allergic to scents. Out of consideration for your fellow audience members, please refrain from using perfume and cologne.
