On board was Simon Weston, Welsh Guardsman, a name and face that was going to become well known for his struggle to overcome his injuries (46% burns) and redefine his role in life. Simon’s message is one of achievement, of triumph over adversity, of seizing the moment and succeeding. ollowing his injuries, Simon’s road to physical, spiritual and mental recovery saw him active in a number of highly successful ventures including ‘The Weston Spirit’, a Liverpool-based young people’s charity. Watsu in the Hot Bath at Thermae Bath Spa
The Waters of Bath The hot springs in Bath are a wonderful, natural resource which deliver over one million litres of mineral-rich water every day. Uniquely in the UK, the mineral water is hot. According to legend, the natural thermal springs were first discovered by Prince Bladud around 863BC, who was cured from his skin disease after bathing in the waters. The waters were then enjoyed by the Celts, Romans, Saxons and Georgians. The waters and the associated Georgian architecture are key reasons for Bath being designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The water fell as rain around 10,000 years ago and then sank to a depth of about 2kms below the earth’s surface before rising back up through one of the three springs in the centre of the City, namely the Cross Spring, the Hetling Spring or the King’s Spring. Once they reach the surface, the spring waters are on average 45˚ Centigrade before cooling down to the optimum bathing temperature of approximately 35˚ Centigrade. The actual source of the waters remains a mystery. It was believed that the source was in the Mendip Hills 30 miles to the south of Bath but more recent findings suggest that the rainwater enters the carboniferous limestone closer to the City and the Avon Valley. The spring waters contain over 42 different minerals, the most concentrated being sulphate, calcium and chloride. Bath and its waters have a long association with well-being
and the word SPA is related to the Latin phrase ‘Salus Per Aquam’ or ‘health through water’.

The 3 Dancers by Didy Veldman Transfigured Night by Kim Brandstrup Frames by Alexander Whitley Britain’s national dance company brings a programme full of gripping drama and worldclass dancing, with live music throughout, to the Theatre Royal Bath from Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th November. Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story behind Picasso’s masterpiece, ‘The Three Dancers’. Now Rambert springs Picasso’s work from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life his vivid Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy and doom that fill his painting. Didy Veldman’s choreography for six dancers, with orchestral music by leading composer Elena KatsChernin, explores the social, psychological and human elements of Picasso’s work. The 3 Dancers forms the centrepiece of a triple bill of dance that also includes Transfigured Night. Two lovers meet by moonlight but a dark secret threatens to tear them apart. Created by two-time Olivier awardwinning choreographer Kim Brandstrup, this cinematic love story with intimate duets and spectacular ensemble dancing, is performed to Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful score. The programme is completed by Frames, an inventive and visually-arresting piece by

A Georgian Christmas: calm and relaxing!
Christmas cheer at Lacock Abbey A beautiful display of decorated Christmas trees is going on show at Lacock Abbey near Chippenham this Christmas. From Saturday 21 November to Monday 4 January 2016 the medieval cloister will be filled with Christmas spirit and 26 trees lovingly decorated by local community groups, charities and schools from Lacock and the surrounding area. Visitors will see some creative, unusual and unexpected Christmas tree decorations transforming Lacock Abbey’s medieval cloister into a twinkly and fun array. Bristol artist Sarah Edwards will make snow-inspired vortex sculptures to add to the experience. “It’s a joy to have the Christmas tree festival back in the cloister. The charities and community groups have been busy making their decorations under the theme of ‘White Christmas’,”, said Kristine Heuser , who works for the National Trust. “I love seeing the groups unpack their decorations – each one is so different and people clearly put a lot of thought and effort into their creations. We have 26 groups this year, including local schools, charities such as Dorothy House, and clubs for children and the young at heart. It’s a lovely display which echoes the traditional festivities and community spirit of the abbey.” On weekends the Great Hall of the abbey will open its doors and visitors can see the huge Christmas tree decorated by Sarah Edwards in the style of a Victorian Christmas. Visitor can find out more about how the Talbot family celebrated Christmas in Victorian times at Lacock Abbey. Families can join festive fun around the grounds and village on the self-led Lacock’s snow joke trail; the snow folk have muddled up their cracker jokes at their Christmas party and Christmas elves of all ages need to help match them up again. Celebrate Christmas at the American Museum in Britain The American Museum is well-known for its beautiful hand-crafted decorations in traditional Christmas colours of red, green, and white, which transport the colourful festivities of the New World to the Old. The centrepiece of the installation, a 17-foot Nordman Fir tree, covered in hundreds of sparkly lights, dominates the Central Hall. As a nod to the modern Christmas tradition of wearing a kitsch festive sweater, mini jumpers, all knitted and many designed by the Museum’s volunteers, will also cover the tree. Most of the Museum’s Period Rooms pre-date the celebration of Christmas as we know it today, so the displays show winter activities that were popular at that time. For the build-up to the festive season, each room is transformed with special costumes, textiles, and floral arrangements. The residents of each Period Room will be pursuing activities that are typical winter traditions. In the Massachusetts Tavern, Mrs Conkey’s table is covered with food as she prepares her Thanksgiving feast an important celebration for the early settlers. Elsewhere, a family warm itself with hot punch after a bracing winter sleigh ride. Kate Hebert, Chief Curator at the Museum, commented, ‘As the days get colder, children look to the skies in the hope of snow. A good snowfall means no school and all the fun of sleigh rides and building snowmen. These Frosty figures have long been associated with winter and often adorn Christmas cards sending season’s greetings to loved ones. This year mini snowmen have crept into the Museum’s Period Rooms and hidden themselves away.

Kurt Jackson: Place at Victoria Art Gallery 10 October 2015 – 3 January 2016 Acclaimed British artist Kurt Jackson has collaborated with a diverse group of contemporary writers for his latest exhibition, and accompanying book, Place. The show opens at the Bath & North East Somerset Council-run Victoria Art Gallery on October 10. Each writer was asked to contribute text about their favourite location in Britain. Jackson then visited each location – including Worthy Farm (Glastonbury Festival), Bristol docks and Bath, as well as islands, mountains, Spaghetti Junction, suburbs, beaches, Paddington Station and a Welsh estuary – to create works for the show. The exhibition will feature each writer’s text alongside Jackson’s response to their chosen location. Kurt Jackson said: “Over the last 30 years as my working practice has evolved, I have become more and more conscious that I need a reason for visiting a location for my work to happen there. For this project, I turned my normal methods upside down and looked for a way to relinquish control and to funnel new sources into my working practice. I decided to ask other people for their own choice of a preferred location, with them choosing where to ‘send’ me to make work at their own personal place within Britain.” Councillor Patrick Anketell-Jones (Conservative, Lansdown), the Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “This exhibition gives a fascinating view of Britain, including Bath and the surrounding areas, through the eyes of Kurt Jackson and an eclectic array of writers. Bath & North East Somerset residents will be able to see the exhibition for free when they show a Discovery Card.” Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis is one of the 32 writers who have contributed text to the show. He will open the exhibition for Jackson, who is also the Glastonbury Festival Artist in Residence. Among the other contributors are charity directors, musicians, professors, journalists, authors and poets. To complement the main exhibition, a group of smaller paintings of Glastonbury has been specially selected by Jackson and will be offered for sale in support of Greenpeace, of which he is a long-time supporter. Jackson works with paint, mixed media, sculpture, printmaking and film, and the idea of ‘place’ has always been essential to his working practice. The Victoria Art Gallery has hosted two Kurt Jackson exhibitions over the past 10 years: ‘Two Woods’ and ‘River Avon’.

NAHOKO KOJIMA Honey Bee Saturday 24 October 2015 to Sunday 24 January 2016 Wirth Gallery | Free Japanese paper cut artist Nahoko Kojima will create an intricate floating three dimensional sculpture from a single sheet of paper cut by hand. Her previous work includes ‘Cloud Leopard’ selected by the Crafts Council to be shown at Collect at the Saatchi Gallery in 2012. The Holburne’s collection includes a number of important pieces of historical paper cut works including a bear cut by Mary West in about 1709.
TEA-TIME TALK SACRED GOLD: Luminous and Numinous Monday 23 November, 3pm Reverend Philip Hawthorn £5 This engaging talk looks behind and beyond the sacred work in the current exhibition, considering gold as material, meaning and metaphor. If you are looking for inspiration for this years christmas dinner, we might just have the answer for you. We've spoken to three of the cities biggest names to give you an alternative festive feast that will knock the socks (or stockings) off a prawn cocktail, turkey leg or christmas pudding.
Pressed Ham Hock, Spiced Fig Jam, Parfait on Toast, Celery and Chestnut David Campbell Head Chef, The Royal Crescent hotel Serves 4 portions Ingredients Ham Hock 1 x Ham hock, 2 x carrots, 2 x stick celery 1 x leek, 1 x onion, sprigs of thyme, 2 x bayleaf white peppercorns, 2 x cloves garlic 1 x tablespoon English mustard, 15 grams capers chopped, 30mils Apple juice 1 x tablespoon chopped parsley Run the Ham hock under cold water for 20 minutes, then place in a pan and cover with cold water, bring slowly up to the boil, this will bring impurities in the fat out to the top of the pan, skim these off and keep skimming until they have gone! Peel and roughly chop the Vegetables, add to the ham with the Garlic, thyme, bay leaf and peppercorns, simmer for approximately 3 hours or until the Ham is starting to fall off the bone. Remove the Ham from the pan, pass off the vegetables which can be discarded and reduce 400 mils of the stock to 100 mils, Reserve! Now pick off any excess fat and gristle from the ham, once done lightly chop it and place in a bowl with the mustard, apple juice, capers and Parsley, add the reduced Ham stock (this will help set your ham) and mix well together, season with Sea salt and freshly milled pepper. To roll the Ham place three equal sized rectangles of cling film one on top of each other, now place the Ham hock on top in a long tube shape, work it with your hands into a nice even width and length, fold the cling film over and over until the ham is completely rolled up like a sausage, tie a know in the cling film at each end nice and tight and set in the fridge for 3 hrs. Parfait toast 200 g chicken liver, 2 x eggs, 150 gram butter 150 gram double cream, 1 x clove garlic 300 mils red wine, Sprig of thyme Six piece white sliced bread, 200mls duck fat pink salt if you can get it, if not rock salt & pepper Chop the livers, place in a bowl with the eggs, chop the butter and add the cream as well, season well with Pink salt and pepper, cover bowl with cling film and leave somewhere warm for 45 mins! This ensures livers, butter and cream do not split when you blitz later! In the meantime, add red wine to a pan, peel

and chop the garlic and add to wine along with thyme, now reduce until nearly syrup and add to the liver mix. Next place liver mix in a blender and blitz on high for approx. 30 seconds, pass through a fine sieve. Line a terrine mould with cling film and add the liver mix, ensure it’s airtight and completely encased in cling film, now place in oven at 110c for 40 mins. Chill and when cold take out of terrine and quickly beat it to ensure it’s perfectly smooth! Place in a piping bag ready to serve. Spiced Fig Jam 8 Figs/ ½ bottle red wine, 2 tbsp clear honey ½ tsp ground mixed spice Cut the figs in half, scoop out the pulp from the centres and discard the skin. Roughly chop. Meanwhile reduce the red wine with the honey and spice until it is almost a syrup consistency, then add the figs and cook until jammy! This should take 3 to 4 minutes. Celery and radish salad Peel 1 x stick of celery, cut into even sized pieces on a slight angle, blanch for 20 seconds in salted boiling water, Refresh. Slice radish thinly and reserve. Glazed Chestnuts If using fresh chestnuts, first score through the skins of the chestnuts, and then roast at 180c for 11 minutes, and peel, keeping the chestnuts as whole as possible. (If not then vacuum-packed chestnuts will work fine.) Fry 12 pieces of chestnut in a little oil, then when slightly caramelised add butter and a drizzle of honey, coat the chestnuts and leave to one side to cool. To serve Warm the duck fat until hot in a sauce pan, cut the crusts from the Bread and cut into 4 even sized rectangles, deep fry till golden brown and place on draining paper. Remove ham from fridge, cut into 4 even sized pieces, remove cling film, and place in centre of plate, cut a small amount off the piping bag and pipe parfait neatly on to the duck fat toast, place on the plate at angle 6 o clock, garnish with a dollop of the fig jam, some pieces of the celery, chestnut and radish and a few sprigs of parsley or any suitable small herb.

Christmas is such a special time of year and we love to sprinkle on the festive cheer, we offer menus and events from 24th November right through to the 9th of January, so whether you like to celebrate early or late or even all the way though, we should have a party package that is perfect for you.
Allium's Chris Staines has built a reputation on creating modern British cuisine, rich in flavour and spices. Here, Chris uses his Michelin starred talents to create an alternative main course, fit for any festive table.
Beef Cheeks braised in master stock with smoked wasabi mash, black pepper sauce and Asian salad. For the Master Stock • 3L Water • 300ml dark soy sauce • 250ml soy sauce or tamari • 100ml Shaoxing Rice Wine • 40-100g chinese yellow rock sugar (or brown sugar) • 2 star anise, broken • 2 pieces cassia bark • 1 tsp Sichuan peppercorns • 1 black cardamom pod, cracked • 2 pieces dried orange peel • 2 red birds eye chillies, split • 4 slices ginger • 2 slices galangal • 15g bonito fish flakes Mix all ingredients and bring to the boil, strain and reserve For the Black Pepper sauce • 15ml olive oil • 15g minced garlic • 140g finely chopped yellow onion • 15ml Chinese rice wine (shaoxing) • 45g ketchup • 7ml Worcestershire sauce • 180ml cup soy sauce • 60ml cup water • 7ml freshly ground black pepper • 15g sugar Method Cook the minced garlic with some oil in a hot pan until fragrant, then add chopped onion and cook until it becomes transparent in color. Add the rest of the ingredients, stir until everything is mixed in. Let it cook for 5 minutes until sauce has thickened. For the Asian Salad • 2 carrots finely shredded • 8 radish finely sliced • 1 bunch spring onions finely sliced • 20g toasted sesame seeds • pinch chopped coriander

For the salad dressing • 2 tablespoons lime juice • 2 tablespoons fish sauce • 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar • 1 teaspoon sesame oil • 2cm piece fresh ginger, finely grated • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Mix all ingredients For the Wasabi Mash • 200g Mashed potato • 30g Smoked Butter • Wasabi paste (to taste) Method Ask the butcher to trim the beef cheeks of any gristle and then cut into manageable chunks. Dust with flour and sear in a hot pan until coloured on all sides. Place into a pan and cover with master stock, cover with a lid and place in a low oven (140 degrees) for about 3 – 4 hours (until the cheeks are completely tender) Mix the smoked butter and wasabi into the mash to taste and heat gently. Place the mash into the bowl with one large piece of the braised beef, spoon over the black pepper sauce. Finally mix the salad and dress with the fish sauce dressing and add to the bowl.

Festive dining with a very special view The Terrace forms part of the Roman Baths complex and overlooks the waters of the Great Bath. Whisk 100g sugar with five egg yolks until pale and add to the orange paste. Sift ground almonds and ground spices together and fold into the orange and yolk mix.
Stew in a Box
Pre-heated oven temperature – 180 degrees
Meanwhile, place 100g sugar and five egg whites into a clean bowl and whisk to stiff peaks.
Method Roughly chop up two oranges, zest and all.
Gently fold the egg whites into the mix. Be careful not to over mix.
Place into a saucepan ginger beer, cinnamon stick, star anise and cloves. Bring to the boil, lower the temperature and simmer until the oranges are soft (approximately 30 minutes).
Transfer the mix to a greased 9” round cake tin and bake at 180 degrees for 50 minutes. To check if the cake is done insert a skewer into the centre of the cake. If the skewer remains clean after removing it from the cake then it's ready. If not cook for a few more minutes.

Drain off oranges. Keeping the spiced ginger beer syrup to be used later. Blend the oranges to a smooth paste and leave to one side to cool.
Once the cake is out and released from the tin heat the syrup back up and glaze the top of the cake with a pastry brush.
Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees.
Serve warm with a scoop of dairy-free ice cream.

What's for Christmas dinner? As we all settle down to tuck into our Christmas dinner this year, it may come as a bit of a surprise that in many countries the traditional meal is devoured the night before and with a variety of weird and wonderful ingredients. Christmas dinner in both the United Kingdom and Ireland is usually eaten in the afternoon on the 25th of December, consisting primarily of roast Turkey, accompanied by a selection of steamed or boiled vegetables, stuffing, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce and followed by a traditional Christmas pudding. Now, as customary as all this may seem, Christmas dinners around the world will differ to reflect the culture, environment and traditions of the country or region it is celebrated in. Even in the UK, the typical Christmas dinner has transformed over the years with Turkey only becoming commonplace during the reign of Henry VIII. Previously, Peacock or Boar were the mainstay of the festive celebrations with Goose playing a cameo role during the Victorian era.
AUSTRALIA: Due to the fact that Christmas falls in the middle of the Ozzie Summer, the traditional hot meal is often replaced with cold meats such as Ham, Chicken and Turkey and accompanied by a side salad. In order to avoid using the oven, cooking is done outside on the barbecue using Shrimp, Steak, Wings and Drumsticks. With an abundance of seasonal fruits available such as mangoes and cherries the Australians tend to substitute Christmas pudding to a more refreshing Pavlova. CZECH REPUBLIC: A traditional Christmas dinner in the Czech Republic consists of fried carp and potato salad which are devoured on Christmas Eve. Many households also prepare a great variety of special Christmas cookies to offer to Christmas visitors. These are prepared many days prior to the feast and take a long time to decorate, with the remainder usually ending up on a Christmas tree as a decoration.

New head chef Ross Shaw has worked in catering for 20 years and is well-established on the Bath restaurant scene having trained at Bath College and having previously worked at Bath favourites Gascoyne Place and the Marlborough Tavern. Ross is passionate about working with local suppliers and staying true to the season working closely with Bath suppliers such as Bartlett’s family butchers and Lovejoys (local fruit and vegetables supplier).

Although common in many states of the US ,Virginia has oysters, ham pie, and fluffy biscuits, a nod to its very English 17th century founders. The Upper Midwest includes dishes from predominately Scandinavian backgrounds such as lutefisk (dried fish) and mashed rutabaga ( a mature turnip). In some rural areas, game meats like elk, opossum or quail may grace the table, often prepared with recipes that are extremely old celebrating and respecting their founding fathers.

The name of this dinner is based on the word réveil (meaning "waking"), because participation involves staying awake until midnight. Each region in France has its own traditional Christmas menu, with dishes like turkey, capon, goose, chicken, and boudin blanc (similar to white pudding) being the main ingredients. With culture and tradition playing a vital role when celebrating Christmas across the World, spare a thought for the Japanese. Alarmingly, it's becoming more and more popular for Japanese families to pop to their nearest KFC for their Christmas meal with many restaurants taking table bookings to handle the Christmas rush. Why turkey for Christmas dinner? I suppose it's taken for granted that every Christmas Day, around 3pm, we sit down with those that matter most, to tuck into a feast fit for a King. But why, when there are bounties plentiful at our disposal, was Turkey considered the star of our Christmas dinner.

It’s clear that the traditional British Christmas dinner that we know and love today, has its stems firmly rooted in the heritage of the country. A great mdeal of the traditions that we still carry on and love today were popularised during the Victorian era where Prince Albert’s love of family and Christmas brought back a lot of the traditions that were beginning to fade and brought in new ones, like the Christmas tree. It will be interesting to see what the future hold for our Christmas dinner as the culture of our country continues to diversify. I know myself being a traditionalist will still make it the one occasion that I will eat a brussel sprout, even if it is sprinkled with crispy bacon!

the Rec. We’ve pushed the boat out this year because it’s actually the fortieth year (Yes, 40!) in a row that we have done this. Forty years is a long time in anybody’s book. 1976 marked the end of Harold Wilson’s tenure as Prime Minister, the first flight of Concorde, the maritime skirmishes of the Cod War between Britain and Iceland, the launch of the Ford Cortina Mark IV. I’m too embarrassed to tell you what topped the charts that year as it still forms the mainstay of my record collection, but punk was still a twinkle in the nation’s eye (and, of course, should have stayed that way!).
Building Society windows are notoriously difficult to dress. I can advertise mortgage rates or savings rates, but am forced by regulation to be so anodyne in the way I present our mortgage and savings accounts and put in such a quantity of compliance detail that any posters are more likely to bore people to death than capture anybody’s imagination. And don’t get me started on the statutory obligation to display alternative percentages (“APRs” and “AERs”) which are supposed to provide clarity to customers on the value of our mortgage or savings products, but which do nothing but confuse. So this month we’ve gone mad! At our Branch in Wood Street we have covered the entire window space with an image of fireworks. Not as an obtuse way of suggesting that our mortgage and savings products are a reason for major pyrotechnical celebration, but as a way of telling the good people of Bath that we are once again sponsoring the Fireworks at

In terms of sponsorship, it’s a very long time indeed. You have to go back before the Canon League and the Milk Cup and the Rumbelows cup in football, and in cricket to the days of the John Player league and the Benson and Hedges Cup. Since we’re talking sport we’re back in the day before Jack Rowell arrived at Bath Rugby and John Curry won the BBC’s Sports personality of the year (a figure skater, thanks for asking!). Yes, 40 years is a very long time. Over that period of time we have worked with many organisations in sponsoring the fireworks and currently the baton is in the hands of The Rotary Club Bath who do a brilliant job in making Fireworks on the Rec happen. For Bath Building Society the night of the Fireworks is important, but in the weeks running up to the night of the display (Saturday 7th November this year) we also work with the local schools to promote firework safety and again are ably assisted by the Fire Service in this work. Children from all over the City send firework safety posters in to us, literally in their thousands. We pick out the ones which get the message across best and present prizes to the winners in various

This competition is an institution in this City and we are now into our third generation of entrants! I cannot but help to think that the message of Firework Safety has been branded onto the population of Bath as in no other City, a view I know to be shared by members of Avon Fire and Rescue. Of course, we think that our long term involvement in Fireworks safety is good “marketing” for the Society, but we do think it is an important topic and it’s a Good Thing to do for the City we love. So remember, remember: the best way to enjoy fireworks is at an organised display. I can even recommend one…

Bath Rugby inducted the first members into its newly-created Hall of Fame recently at a stunning black tie dinner at Farleigh House celebrating the 150th year of the Club.
With the Club having such a rich and distinguished history, and a variety of deserving candidates, selecting the inaugural inductees was a thought-provoking process.
The night, hosted by Jonny Gould, was attended by some of the city's most well-known faces and, of course, key Club figures from the past and present.
“These six men who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame have all had a profound effect on the Club and it is therefore fitting that they have been honoured in this way,” said Managing Director Tarquin McDonald.
Spanning four generations, past players Frank Soane (1881-1898), Major Ronald Gerrard (1930-1941), Roger Spurrell (1979-1986), John Hall (1981-1995) and Jeremy Guscott (1984-2000), and former Head Coach Jack Rowell (1978-1994) have been honoured as the inaugural inductees.

Later in the season, as part of the newlycreated Hall of Fame, Bath Rugby will also be recognising the outstanding contributions and incredible commitments made by individuals to the Club off the field. The 2015 inductees to the Bath Rugby Hall of Fame Jack Rowell OBE coached Bath Rugby between 1978 and 1994, a memorable era of success for the Club which led to him becoming England coach (1995-97). In his first season a record 38 games were won. From 1984/85, with his coaching team of Dave Robson and Tom Hudson, he masterminded six wins in the John Player Special Cup in seven years and the League Championship in 1988/89. Under Rowell, the Club experienced a decade of success, including eight John Player/Pilkington Cups and five League Championships. Jeremy Guscott, known as the ‘Prince of Centres’, scored 143 tries for Bath Rugby in 268 appearances. The only Bath player to be selected and play for the British Lions on three separate tours, he famously kicked a series-winning drop goal against the Springboks. Capped 65 times for England, Guscott scored an

impressive 143 points for his country. A player of immense talent, skill, vision and pace, Guscott was a cool, calm presence. His truly outstanding rugby career was brought to an end with a final appearance for Bath versus Rotherham on 26th November 2000. Joining Bath Rugby in 1981, John Hall spent 17 years at the Club, first in an illustrious playing capacity – he captained the team from blindside flanker and number eight from 1993 to 1995 – before being appointed Director of Rugby. Hall scored an impressive 87 tries in 277 Club appearances. He made 21 appearances for England, with whom he travelled to the World Cup in 1987. As Director of Rugby, Hall was instrumental in procuring players of the highest quality, such as Jason Robinson, Henry Paul and Federico Mendez. Bath Rugby flanker Roger Spurrell captained Bath Rugby for three seasons (1982-1985), and made 206 appearances for the Club. An ex-paratrooper, Spurrell made his debut game for Bath in 1979 against Seahawks, a side from California. He took up the captaincy following an injury to scrum-half Damian Murphy in March 1982 and remained in the role for the next three seasons. Under his captaincy Bath won the John
Player Cup twice – 28/4/1984 against Bristol and 27/4/1985 against London Welsh. His final game, which he captained, was in 1986 against South Wales Police, ending a colourful career stretching over seven years. Wing forward Frank Soane captained Bath for an unequalled eight successive seasons (1890-1898), making over 300 appearances and enjoying a 50-year association with the Club. During this time, Soane won four caps with England (only the second Bath player to appear for his country). Although not especially big, his remarkable strength and tackling earned him the nickname “Buster”. Soane was a driving force in the Club’s move to the Rec, remaining a towering presence off the field long after retiring from the game. Centre Major Ronald Anderson Gerrard D.S.O. made his debut for Bath Rugby in 1930. He captained Somerset for six years (1933-39) and won the first of 14 caps against the Springboks in 1932, as well as leading the combined Somerset and Gloucester Counties XV versus New Zealand in 1936. During the Second World War, he was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order for clearance of mines whilst under fire. His citation read: “Major Gerrard showed the
greatest courage and determination in his leadership which was an inspiration to all who saw it.” Tragically, Gerrard was killed in action just three months later.

Leading off Milsom Street is Green Street: one of the city's prettiest thoroughfares in the City and lined with independent traders. Walking through the many central streets of Bath, you'll find an eclectic mix of high street favourites to distinctive independents. The Corridor has been a prime destination for shoppers in the South West of England ever since the arcade was opened on 12 October 1825. Following in the steps of the fashionable shopping arcades of Paris, London’s Burlington Arcade (built in 1819) and The Corridor became Britain’s first examples of indoor, covered arcades. Over 10,000 people and local dignitaries attended the opening of the arcade which was designed and built by local architect Henry Edmund Goodridge. Goodridge was the son of a successful Bath builder, James Goodridge. Henry developed his own style of architecture from his early Greek revival work to his later eclectic mix of Greek, Italian and Romanesque features which were inspired by his travels abroad. On its completion in 1825, the residents of Bath could see how The Corridor showcased Goodridge’s neo-classical influences.
The Grade II listed arcade featured at the High Street end, a Doric colonnade and arch with marble columns. A musician’s gallery with a wrought iron balustrade and gilt lions’ heads and garlands is in the centre of the arcade making it one of the most attractive of its kind in the world. Steeped in history, The Corridor has had its fair share of famous traders. Back in 1849, J Breeze Esq, a Hire Cutter and Perfumer at No 4 The corridor placed an advert in the Bath Directory informing the “Gentry, notability and public in general” of his “many years of study and experience into the invention of Hair Dye which effectually changes red or grey hair in a few minutes to a beautiful black or brown and is warranted to stand in any climate”.
Over the years, The Corridor has been home to a wide variety of stores, a mix which continues to the present day with visitors enjoying a wide range of high quality outlets. If you are ever wandering through the arcade, think of the history, think of Henry Goodridge and most importantly stop and have a look at whats on offer to keep The Corridor thriving for another 190 years.

The Home of the Handmade Bath Artisan Market For relaxed shopping and unique gifts, visit the Bath Artisan Markets' two Christmas gift fairs at Green Park Station. The first is the Early Bird Shopping Special on November 22nd starting just before the Bath Christmas Market in the city centre. This means it’s the perfect opportunity for those living locally to buy original and handmade Christmas gifts and food from local producers before coaches clog up the roads. The market is under a glass roof and so shoppers can browse without fear of rain or snow and there is plenty of hot food to warm the cockles too. It has been a hot topic for a few years now…. Tenant fees. It would be fair to assume that the nation is clearly divided into two camps; the tenants and the agents or landlords.
As from October 2015 all agents must have signed up to an approved Redress Scheme. To put this in layman’s terms, it means that the government has decided to clampdown on “Cowboy agents”. It’s a common complaint from tenants (and landlords) that agent fees are too high for basic administrative tasks and that deposits are registered and secured with a legal deposit scheme.
We have always taken both the tenants and landlords in to consideration by being fair and transparent with our fees. In taking this view, we have become a reliable, fair, well established organisation. However, even though Bath Property Letting is fair with tenant fees, we still believe that tenants should pay a tenant fee when applying for a property. The best way to explain it is to think of it as a service that is being provided, and that you would obviously; like everything else in life, have to pay for that service. For example, if you were to see a solicitor to draw up a contract/ letter for you or just simply ask for advice, the solicitor will most likely bill you for the time spent on your contract/letter or advice. In the same way a service is being provided by the landlord and agent.

To be in the tenants’ camp does not necessarily mean that you are the physically the tenant.
