HUMMEL BRAND HISTORY SINCE

1923

1923

Albert Messmer develops one of the first football cleats in the world. With his brother Michael Ludwig Messmer, he founds the company Messmer & Co., that will go on to become known as hummel.

1956

The visionary Bernhard Weckenbrock takes over the company. He creates a comprehensive brand identity and introduces the chevrons.

1968

The first sponsorship deal is signed. The deal is with Duisburg, a team playing in the 2nd German Bundesliga.

1969

The first sportswear collection is launched. Sponsorships are signed and help boost sales. A rounder version of the bumblebee than the current one is created.

1970

hummel is introduced to the Northern European market.

1979

hummel signs a sponsorship deal with the Danish national team for the first time – a deal that lasts until 2004.

1988

hummel signs a sponsorship deal with Real Madrid and the club’s biggest star, Emilio Butragueño. The deal makes hummel products even more popular.

2016

After many years hummel once again sponsors a team in the German Bundesliga. SC Freiburg plays a sensational first season after returning to the first league and qualifies for international competition.

2019

In 2019, hummel substantiates its status as an original handball brand by signing the German handball club, THW Kiel – unarguably one of the biggest clubs in the World.

1992

It’s a surprising win, to say the least. The Danish national team takes the title at the European Championships having played Germany in the final.

1999

hummel gets a new owner – Thornico. Christian Stadil becomes part of the brand history. He launches a reintroduced, original sport style collection on the fashion market and hummel becomes a trendsetting sports apparel brand.

2020

In 2020 hummel team up with the historic football club Everton FC and return to the Premier League after 13 years of absence. The chevrons are back on the biggest football stage again.

2023

In 2023, hummel celebrates a century of existence, marking 100 years of proud heritage in the world of sports.

2025

hummel proudly sponsor prominent football and handball clubs including Real Betis, 1. FC Köln, SV Werder Bremen, AS Saint-Étienne, Sunderland A.F.C, Celta de Vigo, Aalborg Handball, SG Flensburg-Handewitt and SC Magdeburg.

SUNDERLAND AFC

Back in the Premier League

After eight long seasons outside the top tier, Sunderland AFC is back in the Premier League. The 2024/25 promotion campaign will be remembered as one of the most iconic in the club’s rich history, and we’re proud to stand alongside the Black Cats as they return to where they belong.

REAL BETIS

Chasing European glory once again

In their iconic green hummel chevrons, Real Betis wrote history in 2024/25. Their incredible journey led them all the way to the UEFA Conference League final against Chelsea – marking the club’s first-ever appearance in a European final. A season that will forever be remembered, and one we are proud to share with the Betis family.

Where football meets responsibility

hummel and Werder Bremen share more than football – we share values. As one of the Bundesliga’s most historic clubs, Werder is also leading the way in responsibility, both socially and environmentally. The Weserstadion is home to one of Europe’s largest building-integrated solar panel systems, generating clean energy for the future. The German powerhouse has long been a beacon of the sport, and in 2025 they reaffirmed their legendary status by lifting the EHF Champions League trophy once again. SUSTAINABILITY

At hummel, we believe that responsibility is a joint effort. At the same time, the desire to make a difference through sport is deeply rooted in our heritage and this is also reflected in our products. As a result, all hummel Teamsport collections introduced after 2022 are produced entirely from 100% recycled polyester or 100% organic cotton (with the exception of socks).

This decision is part of our overall strategy to reduce our environmental impact and achieve our approved Science Based Target Initiative climate goals.

At hummel, we believe that together we can create positive change. By choosing our sportswear, you support a more responsible approach to production and manufacturing, where recycled materials and organic cotton play a key role. The majority of our PRO CLUB jerseys and shorts are already made from recycled polyester and we are committed to keep expanding the use of these materials in all our future products.

TARGETS FOR THE FUTRURE

hummel A/S commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 60% by 2031 from a 2021 base year. hummel A/S commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from

purchased goods and services by 55% per purchased item within the same timeframe.

hummel A/S commits that 33% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services will have sciencebased targets by 2026.

RECYCLED PACKAGING AND LABELLING

Underlining our commitment to work towards a circular economy, we are transitioning to packaging and labelling made from recycled and recyclable materials.

• The polybags we are using for transporting & storing of the products are made from 100% recycled polythene.

• We are currently transitioning to cardboard boxes for distribution crafted from 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard.

• Our hangtags are made from FSC recycled paper.

FOOTBALL INFLATION GUIDE

PREPARATION

During wintertime we suggest to store the footballs at room temperature (20 – 25˚C) for minimum 24 hours before the first inflation in order to secure optimal softness and shape.

Unfold the football with both hands and shake the bladder free.

VALVE OIL

Drip 1 – 2 drops of valve oil into the valve. It is important that valve-oil is used at every inflation as it makes the valve seal properly.

INFLATE

Position the valve upwards and insert the inflation needle straight into the valve. Always use a long pump needle to ensure the needle does not damage the valve or the bladder.

CHECK PRESSURE

• Inflate the ball to the recommended pressure.

• Recommended pressure is printed on the ball near the valve.

• Inflate slowly to allow the ball to gain its correct shape. Rapid inflation can damage the bladder.

• Use a pressure gauge to check the pressure of the ball.

FOOTBALL MAINTENANCE GUIDE

BEFORE EACH INFLATION

STORAGE

Store the ball at reduced pressure in a dry ventilated room at 20 – 25˚C.

CLEANING AND DRYING

After use clean the football in mild soapy water and rinse with water. Then wipe the ball off with a towel and let it fully dry in a dry, airy place at 20 – 25˚C.

Never dry the ball on or near a heating device.
