Art, culture & history

Those who grant art its freedom and space are rewareded with a precious cultural landscape. The Imst Outdoor Region is home to important museums, customs and traditions.

Exhibitions, festivals, street art – art and culture are a vital facet of the Imst Outdoor Region.

Whether cultural treasures are displayed in museums, innovative movements are showcased in exhibitions, or events are celebrated loudly and colourfully, it all promises to be a fascinating experience. Numerous institutions, including museums and galleries, as well as many creative minds, ensure that people's hearts and minds are moved by art and culture. The legendary custom of carnival, for example, is celebrated all year round in the carnival

houses, as if you were to find yourself in the hustle and bustle of a genuine masked procession during your visit. In the museums of the Imst Outdoor Region, you can travel in time to experience agriculture after the Second World War, woodwork and textile crafts in the 17th century, and many other exciting stories up close. The Imst Outdoor Region is incomparably diverse and enjoys a high reputation among many art and culture enthusiasts.

Buabefåsnåcht

On 08.02.2026, it’s time again for the boys’ carnival. Be captivated by one of the Alpine region’s most traditional carnival celebrations!

Early in the morning at 07:00, the boys attend the carnival mass, then everyone gathers to watch the Figatter, performed by young carnival participants. Afterwards, they are literally sewn into their costumes.

At 10:00, the procession begins from the Lower Town toward the Upper Town. You’ll see masked boys marching individually, in pairs, or in groups, some of them pulling their own little wagons, the Aufzugswagelen.

After the procession, the participants eagerly wait for the twelve chimes and the start of the parade in the opposite direction. The Roller, Scheller and Laggepaarle

form the first Kroas (circle), while the order masks do their best to protect it. It goes without saying that parents, teachers, and female classmates are the main targets of the spectacular order-keeping activities carried out by the Spritzer, Såckner, and Kübelemajen. One Kroas after another is formed. The main masks and the witches have their hands full with Einführen, as every carnival participant active in the Schemenlaufen wants to make sure they are properly “introduced” by the boys, the Buabe. A final Zsåmmschalle shortly after 17:00 at the town square, a wonderful preview of the next big carnival of the adults in two years, and at the same time a clear, resounding sign that these boys will ensure the future of the Imst Fasnacht!

Easter & Springtime

With bundles of palm branches, catkins, and colourful ribbons, processions make their way through the streets. That means the Easter season has arrived – with all its customs, celebrations and traditions.

Easter in the Outdoor Region

The period from Palm Sunday to Good Friday forms the heart of the religious tradition in Imst. Participating in the festivities and celebrations is an unforgettable experience. Immerse yourself in traditions and become part of the streams of pilgrims that migrate to the "Bergl" during Holy Week. On Easter Monday, an Easter path of light forms from the parish church of Imst to St John's Church.

TIP:

For many locals, spring is the most beautiful time. The still snow-covered peaks compete with the green meadows and first flowers for the viewer's attention and create an enchanting spring landscape.

Rainy Day Activities

Even on rainy days, there’s plenty to discover in the Outdoor Region Imst. There is certainly something for everyone, and the sun will soon shine again.

Welcome to the Outdoor Heroes!

Buddy was a truly special bird even as a young eaglet. His wings were far too small to carry him through the skies like his parents. Yet one day, he tried anyway, and when he took the plunge from the eagle’s nest, a field of blueberry bushes softened his fall and saved him. Since then, the young eagle’s feathers have turned blue, and no rain has been able to wash the colour away. But because Buddy was determined to fly, to explore the Alps and make new friends, he had to come up with a clever plan.

So, he built a long runway near his home, planning to take off with

his self-made Flying Coaster to explore the Alps. Of course, Buddy wouldn’t be Buddy if he had just built a simple steep ramp. No, he constructed a wild coaster winding through the entire forest, so everyone could see that in the end, he really could fly.

And so Buddy finally managed to fly. On his journey through the Alps, he made many new friends, each with a very special gift. At the end of his journey, Buddy invited all his new friends to Imst, where they decided to form a very special superhero team: The Outdoor Heroes.
