With its gently undulating slopes, the Hoch-Imst ski area offers perfect conditions for beginners and those returning to the sport of skiing after a longer break. The immaculately groomed pistes are linked by two double chairlifts, a drag tow and a practice lift. The spacious Winterpark is ideal for little ones taking their very first steps on two skis. FREE SKI BUS Free ski bus for guests in possession of a valid ski pass or carrying winter sport equipment from Imst and its neighbouring villages to the Imster Bergbahnen ski lifts and the surrounding ski areas in Pitztal, as well as to Oetz and Kühtai. We recommend that you undertake your ski tours with a local guide. An avalanche transceiver is a MUST!

uttekopf 2,774 m – Imst’s landmark mountain is a popular M summit with local ski tourers. The ascent requires experience and a good level of fitness, but can be shortened by using the Imster Bergbahnen cable car. Venet 2,400 m – Starting from Imsterberg the route to the Venet alm mountain hut takes you through enchanting forests. From the Venetalm you follow the ridge to the Venet summit. Several different variations of the downhill run are possible and should be carefully selected in accordance with prevailing snow and weather conditions. Roter Stein 2,366 m – A breathtakingly beautiful ski tour starting from the Fern Pass and leading through the ruggedly picturesque Kälbertal valley. Fantastic slopes take you up to a point where you must remove your skis and continue on foot up to the summit. Sinnesjoch 2,273 m – A classic springtime ski tour that (weather and snow conditions permitting) offers spectacular views of the Gurgltal valley and Imst. Beginners’ and training route – Ursprungweg trail from HochImst.

This dance follows strict rules, many of which go back centuries. Well-known far and wide, the renowned ‘Fasnacht’ carnival processions in Imst and Nassereith, which only take place every three or four years, offer a mesmerising spectacle for spectators from all over the world. Furthermore, the ‘Imster Schemenlaufen’ was, in 2012, the first Austrian custom to be added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Nassereith’s carnival procession, likewise, was added to the UNESCO National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012. The little villages of Tarrenz and Roppen are also the scene of revelry every four years with their Fasnacht celebrations. The Imst Holiday Region ‘sweetens the waiting time’ for its visitors between the carnival traditions with a broad spectrum of fascinating events and cultural treats.

On the occasion of the organisation's 50th anniversary, even The Rolling Stones showed their deep respect by giving their first-ever concert in the Tyrolean mountains. CARNIVAL MUSEUM – HAUS DER FASNACHT This museum makes use of state-of-the-art technology to present an authentic, indeed archaic, custom in all its richness. The museum was awarded the Museum Prize by the provincial government of Tyrol and it holds the Austrian Museums Seal of Quality. Furthermore, in 2012 the ‘Imster Schemenlaufen’ became the first Austrian custom to be added to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Film excerpts from the early 1930s to the present day offer visitors a clear insight into the movements, the primal power, the rhythms and the mysteries of the masked parade. Ingenious presentations and photos from a period covering one hundred years offer a fascinating insight into both the history and the present-day significance of the Fasnacht carnival tradition. STARKENBERGER BEER MYTH

Several years ago the 200-year-old brewery was meticulously modernised and the 700-year-old castle was given a new lease of life. In the castle the debris that had amassed over the centuries was eliminated and the old plasterwork was removed to reveal walls that were even older. The rooms reverted to their original functions along with the historical connecting corridors, some of which served as secret passageways! Thus, a tour through the castle evolved that takes visitors from up above the brewery down to the deepest vaults, cellars and passageways. Today the brewery and the castle offer a fascinating experience and a close insight into the world of brewing from its very beginnings to the present day. The village of Nassereith in the Tyrolean Oberland region is one of the few remaining places that still actively upholds the age-old tradition of the Fasnacht carnival. Created a few years ago, the Fasnachthaus enables visitors to gain a close insight into this spectacular tradition all year round, with state-of-the-art audio-visual systems that bring this unique custom quite spectacularly to life. I’ve heard of a village in the Gurgltal valley – some say it’s bewitched!

The Tarrenz Fasnacht is set to take place once more after a fouryear break. The whole village is involved in the carnival revelry and thousands of spectators come to marvel at the colourful spectacle. The Tyrolean Fasnacht carnival celebrations form the most important secular holidays in those villages in which they take place – as is the case in Tarrenz. Every four years the inhabitants of the little village in the Gurgltal valley celebrate their Fasnacht tradition. The origins and significance of the Fasnacht customs are thought to be an archaic ritual with the aim of driving out the evil spirits of winter. Today the Fasnacht is a central element that strengthens the feeling of identity and communal spirit among the villagers and offers proof that traditions and customs here are still very much alive. Preparations get underway weeks, even months, before the big day. Masks are carved, costumes are sewn and floats are built.

In 2017 the entire village of Tarrenz will, once again, be astir, bringing to life the centuries-old custom. No fewer than 250 inhabitants – all men – will be actively performing, while the women see it as their honourable duty to sew the vibrantly coloured costumes. The term ‘Auskehren’ literally means ‘sweeping out’ and every year on Shrove Tuesday the highly popular tradition of ‘Auskehren’ takes places in Imst with a smaller-scale night-time carnival procession to mark the end of the festive season before the beginning of Lent. The main figures from the Schemenlaufen parade – the Roller and Scheller – do not take part. Instead, the witches are in the limelight under the auspices of the ‘Hexenmutter’ – the mother of witches – who also ranks as the procession’s highest authority. The witches are accompanied by ‘Zintern’ – Altfrank figures carrying lanterns to shine a little light on the dark goings-on – as well as ‘Wiflig’ figures, a group of bears and several ‘Labara’ groups. The latter go from one inn to the next comically reporting with rhyme, song and pictures on all the bungling and botching that went on over the past year in Imst that the public was not supposed to know about! A unique part of the ‘Auskehren’ tradition is the so-called Zurfen – one of the spectators grabs hold of a witch’s broom and the two pull as hard as they can, measuring their strength against one another. The spectator usually loses – but exceptions do occur. In earlier times any witches who lost were locked by their opponent into a barn (of which there used to be many in the centre of Imst) and not let out until Ash Wednesday…

The traditional ‘Auskehren’ procession with the ‘burning-of-thewitch’ ritual takes places every year on Shrove Tuesday. The procession starts from the primary school/Café Käfer car park and moves on to the village square. Everyone, not only religious believers, enjoys the delightful Easter traditions and customs. Holy Week is a very special time in Imst when people get together in preparation for the celebration of the Resurrection. At the centre of Imstâ€™s traditional Easter festivities is the Calvary on the summit of which stands an ancient sacred site. Beautifully deÂ corated chapels and shrines invite visitors to reflect and meditate. The magnificent Palm Sunday procession leads over the Calvary, as does the procession of believers on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. In the Pestkapelle (plague chapel), visitors can marvel at the ornately designed Holy Sepulchre. Numerous liturgical ceremonies, the traditional Easter concert in the Johanneskirche church and a Stations of the Resurrection service leading from Imst Parish Church to Johanneskirche church on Easter Monday round out the spectrum of Easter festivities.
