As the tech industry has grown exponentially over the past two decades, and the millennials continue to grow into powerful positions, companies have innovated wildly to gain a competitive advantage and to keep up with relentless customer expectations. Better, faster, easier! This is the battle cry. Oh, and make sure there’s an app for that. It’s no surprise that streamlined, vertical organizations are popping up everywhere these days. Yes, this is what customers wanted, but isn’t there something cold and impersonal about many 21st century transactions? You’re not imagining it. Yes, customers still demand the speed and efficiency. IMPRINT CANADA THE MARKETING AND INFORMATION SOURCE FOR IMPRINTABLE PRODUCTS November/December 2016 - Volume 23, Issue 6

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2016 matter was that it was the only place he had a friend or contact outside his own country that could help him get set up and on his feet. Having no reason to think otherwise, I naively asked him if driving a cab was supporting his pursuit of his medical career path.

The Ripple Effect Some 25 ago, I was in a cab in Atlanta traveling to a trade show. As is always my habit, I was having a nice chat about the city with the cab driver. Sensing a foreign accent, I asked him where he was originally from. It was a long ride that day as downtown traffic was brutal and we both figured to chat the ride away.

These barriers south of our border have been highlighted often during the recent Presidential elections - most often for the wrong reasons. But Americans have cast their decision and now only time will tell if they have made the right decision. From our perspective as Canadians, I think back to a quote about the United States made by a man who helped my parents overcome their own barriers. “Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt” - Pierre Trudeau

My parents spoke of barriers too when they first arrived in Canada in 1959. But within a few short years, those barriers became smaller and smaller until they became non-existent.

The reason he chose Atlanta or the United States for that

NEWS

He pulled over to the side of the road, turned around and calmly stated ,“I have been here seven years; seven years I have experienced the barriers that minorities live with. I began driving a cab when I arrived. I drive a cab today. I will drive a cab tomorrow.” He then continued driving calmly continuing with our conversation.

To this day I often wonder what he meant by “barriers”. I do know that wanting to be a doctor is based in a passion to help others. Such passions don’t go away.

I asked him what he did for a living back home and why he chose Atlanta. He explained that back home, he was an intern studying to be a doctor but because everyday life was not safe and stable, he left.

Industry News Gildan Activewear reports third quarter results

Gildan Activewear Inc. (TSX:GIL)(NYSE:GIL) reported that for the three months ended October 2, 2016 consolidated net sales grew 6.0 per cent over the same quarter last year to $715 million (all figures U.S.), reflecting sales increases of 4.9 per cent in the Printwear segment and 8.2 per cent in Branded Apparel. Consolidated gross margin for the quarter was 30.4 per cent, down 100 basis points compared to the same period last year as the benefit of lower raw material and other input costs and manufacturing cost savings related to the Company’s capital investments was more than offset by lower net selling prices, unfavourable product-mix and foreign currency exchange. SG&A expenses of $86.8 million in the quarter were up $8.4 million compared to the prior year quarter due primarily to the impact of the Alstyle and Peds acquisitions. Adjusted operating margins totaled 18.3 per cent compared to 19.8 per cent in the same period last year reflecting the gross margin decline and the transitional dilutive impact of acquisition activity primarily on SG&A. Net earnings totaled $114.4 million or $0.49 per share on a diluted basis for the three months ended October 2, 2016, compared with net earnings of $123.1 million or $0.50 per share for the three months ended October 4, 2015. Excluding after-tax restructuring and acquisition-related costs of $2.0 million in the quarter and $3.3 million in the same quarter last year, Gildan reported adjusted net earnings of $116.4 million, or $0.50 per share on a diluted basis for the third quarter of 2016, down from $126.4 million, or $0.52 per share in the prior year quarter.

Segmented Operating Results

Net sales for the Printwear segment for the third quarter of 2016 amounted to $461.9 million, in-line

with Company expectations and up 4.9 per cent from $440.5 million in the same calendar quarter last year. The increase in net sales compared to the prior year quarter was mainly due to the $38.6 million sales contribution of the Alstyle acquisition, continued POS growth in the faster-growing performance and fashion basics product segments in the U.S printwear channel and double digit volume growth in international printwear markets. Net sales for the Branded Apparel segment in the quarter were $253.1 million, up 8.2 per cent from $234.0 million in the third calendar quarter of 2015. The increase in Branded Apparel sales was mainly due to organic unit sales volume growth from increased shelf space and new retail program shipments and a contribution of $9.6 million from the acquisition of Peds. Excluding the impact from the exit of private label programs and the Peds acquisition, Branded Apparel organic sales growth in the quarter was 8.5 per cent.

Year-to-date consolidated sales and earnings

Consolidated net sales of $1,997.2 million in the first nine months of 2016 were down 1.4 per cent compared to $2,024.9 million in the same period last year reflecting slight declines in both operating segments. Net earnings for the first nine months of 2016 were $272.3 million, or $1.15 per share on a diluted basis, compared to $278.5 million, or $1.14 per diluted share for the same period of the prior year. Before reflecting after-tax restructuring and acquisition-related costs in both years, adjusted net earnings were $281.8 million or $1.19 per diluted share in the first nine months of 2016 compared to adjusted net earnings of $286.5 million or $1.18 per diluted share in the same period last year.

Is Your Ego Hindering Your Success in the Workplace? By Edward D. Hess

In our economy, success often depends on how well we can listen, learn, and collaborate with others. Larger-than-life egos are fast becoming liabilities, not the signs of strength and leadership they once were. Indeed, in what may first appear to be a paradox, ego’s mortal enemy - humility - is one of the traits most likely to guarantee success in the today’s workplace. In the tech tsunami that will almost certainly wash over the western world in the next few decades, robots and smart machines are projected to take over standardized, routine-oriented jobs. The jobs that will still be ‘safe’ from automation involve higher-order cognitive and emotional skills – things that technology can’t replicate (yet). Jobs that require critical thinking, innovation, creativity, and emotionally engaging with other people all have one thing in common: they are enabled by humility. Ask yourself this: Have you ever met someone with a big ego who was open-minded or quite apt at reflectively listening?...or saying, “I don’t know,” “Your idea is better than mine,” or, “You’re right”? Chances are, you probably haven’t. In my book, Learn or Die: Using Science to Build a Leading-Edge Learning Organization, I explain that if you want to be an effective leader (or a successful

employee), you are going to have to rein in your ego and become more team-oriented. Make no mistake, it won’t be easy. I am talking about self-work that’s never finished. For one thing, ego-based thinking is our brain’s default position—we naturally seek to reinforce what we already think we know. Also, we have to overcome a lifetime of cultural and behavioral big-ego conditioning. The following seven suggestions are to help you hone your humility:

1. You have to work against your brain’s natural inclinations.

Quieting our egos actually goes against our very natures! Cognitively, we humans are wired to selectively process only information that is confirmatory—and to selectively filter out information that contradicts what we think we “know” to be “right.” In addition, we’re lazy, self-serving, and emotionally defensive thinkers who are driven to protect our egos. However, high-level innovative thinking is a team sport; in order to learn, adapt, and succeed, we have to be willing to look closely at our mistakes and failures, to really listen to people who disagree with us, and to allow the best thinking and best ideas to rise to the top. This requires…(you guessed it) humility! Ego, continued on page 22

Reebok’s Liquid Factory brings sneaker creation to United States

A/LEE

Fine foods

Reebok has announced that it has brought sneaker production back to the US by introducing Liquid Factory – a ground-breaking manufacturing innovation that could fundamentally change the process and speed of footwear creation. Developed by the Reebok Future team, the Liquid Factory process uses state-of-the-art software and robotics to literally draw shoes in three dimensions. Spearheaded by Bill McInnis, head of Future at Reebok and a former NASA engineer, this next generation of footwear manufacturing allows the fitness brand to design and create a high performance athletic shoe faster and more efficiently than ever before. “Footwear manufacturing hasn’t dramatically changed over the last 30 years,” said McInnis.“Every shoe, from every brand is created using molds - an expensive, time-consuming process. With Liquid Factory, we wanted to fundamentally change the way that shoes are made, creating a new method to manufacture shoes without molds. This opens up brand new possibilities both for what we can create, and the speed with which we can create it. “One of the most exciting things about Liquid Factory is the speed. We can create and customize the design of shoes in real time, because we’re not using molds - we’re simply programming a machine,” said McInnis. “Liquid Factory is not just a new way of making things, it’s a new speed of making things.”

Q3FY16 revenues up 4 per cent at Levi Strauss For the third fiscal quarter ended August 28, 2016 net revenues rose four per cent year over year on a reported basis to touch $1,185 million at denim marketer Levi Strauss & Co. However, revenues grew higher at five per cent, when excluding $11 million in unfavourable currency translation effects, while direct to consumer sales increased 14 per cent. On a reported basis, gross profit in the third quarter of fiscal 2016 was $593 million compared with $573 million for the same quarter of fiscal 2015, while gross margin stood at 50.0 per cent as against 50.2 per cent of revenues in the fiscal ago quarter. In the quarter under review, net income surged 69 per cent year on year to $98 million mainly from growth in revenues and a decline in charges related to the company’s productivity initiative.

Under Armour reports Q3FY16 results UnderArmour Inc.recently lowered its long-term growth rate expectations which sent the company’s shares tumbling 14 per cent to $32.60 (as of late October) and is down 31 per cent over the past 12 months. “While we expect to continue to significantly outpace the apparel industry, the growth rate going forward will be less than expected from our Investor Day in 2015,” the company said during prepared remarks on its earnings call on October 25, 2016. The company also said it expects operating income growth to trail revenue growth over the next two years. Kevin Plank, founder and chief executive of Under Armour said the company is focused on three primary initiatives: “get big fast,” improving its retail operations, and selling more footwear, a stillemerging category for Under Armour. The company has also moved to diversify its portfolio, launching its first foray into the high-end clothing space during Fashion Week in September. Under Armour said its profit rose 28 per cent and revenue jumped 22 per cent in the third quarter as it continued expanded its market share and benefited from sharply higher footwear sales. Apparel sales increased 18 per cent to $1.02 billion for the quarter, led by growth in men’s training, women’s training, golf and team sports, while footwear sales increased 42 per cent to $278.8 million driven by strong growth in running and basketball. Over all for the quarter, Under Armour reported a profit of $128.2 million, or 29 cents a share, up from $100.5 million, or 23 cents, a year earlier. Revenue was $1.47 billion. Gross margin fell to 47.5 per cent compared with 48.8 per cent last year, due in part to increased promotions.

How to use Instagram Stories to Expand Your Brand Exposure By Adriano Aldini, Imprint Canada

Earlier this year, in our July/August edition, we looked at how businesses could leverage Snapchat, the popular video-sharing mobile messaging application business. In that original article, Snapchat had reported that its daily active users were 150 million people, watching more than 10 billion videos each day. Due to this popularity, Snapchat’s main competitor Instagram (which is owned by Facebook) recently introduced a new feature to its application called Stories, which allows users to - you guessed it - share short videos and images that disappear after 24 hours. So while imitation they say is the sincerest form of flattery, the reality is that Instagram’s 500 million monthly active users easily trumps that of Snapchat, giving businesses a more popular and mainstream vehicle with which to connect with their audiences. Essentially Instagram Stories are a string of images and videos that can be uploaded to a feed that’s separate from your regular Instagram feed. Here are a few basics with respect to how Instagram Stories work (for Snapchat users, this may list may sound extremely familiar). • Anyone on Instagram who is using the most updated version has access to Instagram Stories. • Your story plays chronologically as you add content to it. • The videos or photos in your story cannot be liked or commented on, but you can send the user a message directly from the Stories slideshow • You’ll be able to see exactly who watched each part your story • You can edit your content with fun features like text, finger paint and emojis • Swiping down on the Stories camera allows you to post content shot in the last 24 hours from your camera roll • Feature a specific part of your story by using the share button to share it directly to your regular feed If you have an active audience base on Instagram, then you have the opportunity to create Snapchat-like content without the challenge of building up a Snapchat audience or

launching a new channel. In addition to your built-in Instagram audience, you also have the opportunity for increased discoverability. The content you produce on Snapchat needs to be promoted regularly across other channels or else no one will see it. On Instagram, there are hashtags, geotags, and the Discover section to increase your chances of being found. Snapchat content can disappear into the void unless someone knows exactly what to look for. How do you use Instagram Stories and what are best ways you can leverage it for your business?

Here’s how to use the built-in feature in 5 simple steps: 1. Tap on the plus button found on the top-left side of your homescreen or swipe left in Instagram Stories are accessible on your home page above the beginning of your feed your Feed. 2. Tap the circle button at the bottom of the screen to take photos or tap and hold to record a video. 3. Edit the photos or videos with text, or add a drawing. (If you hit the pen icon, there are three types of pens: thin, thick and one with a neon effect. 4. Tap Done to save your Story. 5. Tap the arrow or check mark button to share to your Story. SETTINGS: You can access your Instagram Stories settings by pressing the gear icon on the top left of the screen. Here you can select privacy settings - which allow you to hide your story from anyone - by typing their name and selecting the “X” that’s next to it. You can also allow message replies and opt to save shared photos to your device in the settings panel. Your stories will follow the privacy settings of your account; if your account is set to private, your story is visible only to your followers. When watching your own story, you can swipe up to check out who’s seen each photo and video. You can even choose to feature a particular part of your story by posting it on your profile. Users will see stories from accounts they follow in a bar at the top of their feed—from their best friends and their favorite business accounts. When there’s something new to see, the account profile photo will have a colourful ring around it.

If you have an active audience base on Instagram, then you have the opportunity to create Snapchat-like content without the challenge of building up a Snapchat audience or launching a new channel. 12 IMPRINT CANADA | November/December 2016

News {Social Media} News {Business Development} Instagram Stories, continued from page 12

Now that you have a basic understanding of how simple it is to create custom stories, here are a couple of simple ways in which to best leverage this feature for your business’ account.

1. Build Buzz & Showcase Your Collection of Work

Instagram Stories are a great way to take your followers behind the scenes and give them sneak peeks of what’s to come. These small peeks not are not only relationship builders, they help build buzz for your campaigns. A big advantage over Snapchat that Instagram offers is that users can employ “stories” to supplement their main feed, which can help tell the full story behind their posts. Say you decide to share a beautiful picture of technical apparel that you decorated for a key client, you could use Instagram Stories to show the a snippet of the live production run, or of the various steps involved in the production process.

Are you offering a limited time promotion or closeout that is soon coming to an end? Instagram Stories is a great tool to remind your audience you have something going on today - or in the near future - and that it’s their last chance to get access to it. The popular grocery chain Whole Foods uses Instagram Stories to share lifestyle shots of their favourite items on sale each week. This is a great way for social media to influence customer purchase intent. Creating a short video or image that is targeted at driving customer intention - or a call to action - is a great use for Instagram Stories.

4. Highlight Your Relationships Instagram’s 500 million monthly With Your Customers active users easily trumps that of Snapchat, giving businesses a more popular and mainstream vehicle with which to connect with their audiences.

2. Highlight New Products or Special Events

Instagram Stories is great social media marketing tool because it gives you a vehicle to showcase live events and new product launches to your audience. Coffee giant Starbucks is a company that utilized this feature in a unique way. The company used Instagram Stories to showcase their top drink picks for the changing seasons. Starbucks cleverly used Instagram’s simple drawing tools to give their stories additional movement and colour. This basic approach helps the brand extend its messaging and reach their audience in a new way - which can only be beneficial in their wider promotional efforts. For your business, the next time you host a function, or are taking part in live events - such as company retreats, open houses, charity luncheons, team building activities, et cetera - you could try supplementing your regular feed with story snippets of staff or attendees partaking in the event’s action. This will give your audience a fun and genuine glimpse into your company culture and the people that comprise it.

3. Bring Awareness to Your Other Campaigns or Promotions

Do you have a great relationship with your clients? If so, why not build a stronger relationships with your audience by letting them in on some of that love you currently share? The next time you present one of your clients with some great work you’ve produced, use Instagram Stories to showcase them using or receiving the product(s). This will give your audience insight into the quality of work you business produces, in addition to highlighting the “happiness factor” that comes with clients receiving an order well done. Instagram Stories are also a great vehicle for showcasing any user generated content that they shared using the products you’ve decorated for them. With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about over posting (which is something you want to avoid). The last thing you want to become is a nuisance to your audience by over posting and cluttering up their feed. Business can share as much as they wish throughout the day, and the photos or videos will disappear after 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in feed. Through Instagram Stories, brands and businesses can benefit from adding more context to the posts on their main Instagram Feeds, thereby creating a deeper interaction with their audience. Instagram Stories - when paired with great content - can help open doors for businesses to connect, engage and build more trust with their audience,. It’s also a fantastic tool to help enhance contest, campaigns, new products, promotions... all while driving more engagement. So if you haven’t yet tried Instagram Stories for your business, try playing around with it and have a little fun letting your audience in on what makes your company and/or brand so unique! It’s important to remember that there is no need to rush into it; take your time to test it and play with all the features in order to fully explore its capabilities and the potential impact it can have for your social media marketing efforts.

News {Business Development} But now, more and more people are falling in love with the amazing array of craft beers available. Why? Because microbrewers have reclaimed the art of beer making. Businesses will be able to surpass their customers’ expectations when they pride themselves on their craftsmanship and skill level; this, when coupled with genuine old fashion caring customer service, is a big factor in creating strategic and sustainable competitive advantages. There’s something uplifting about watching wellcrafted skills and just appreciating that ability. There is an artisanship of service that organizations like the Ritz-Carlton have worked tireless to instill within their culture. Watching those professionals in action just makes you go, “Wow, that’s a lost art!”

draw customers to you and maybe even help keep your business alive if it’s struggling. There’s so much competition out there in today’s marketplace, that the manner in which you treat and relate to every one of your customers may be the critical factor which makes your company truly unique from the others. You can bring things to market very quickly today; speed and global distribution sometimes make for product ubiquity, so it is all the more critical that you focus on differentiating your company by putting your customers’ experiences first and really dedicating your business to owning a certain style of old-fashioned service.

Here’s the bottom line: Even though the times have changed and technology has leapt into the foreground, basic human needs have - and will undoubtedly will continue to - stay the same. I don’t think there will ever come a time when people say, “I don’t really care if you did not treat me well. I’m not concerned if you really care about my business. I don’t really care if I’m appreciated. You know, as far as I’m concerned, I just want to buy your stuff.” And I think because of this fact, we have to anchor ourselves to this timeless truth of humanity. Customizing the delivery of the customer service experience to ensure that it is aligned to both the

contemporary needs of our fast-paced economic realities, as well the needs of people on a humane level. The successful organizations of today are the ones that really understand and have worked hard to instill that balance within their company culture. These businesses are the ones that have figured out how to balance integrating technology while still connecting to their client base on a personal level, whether it’s face-to-face, on the phone, in a letter or what have you. These successful companies instill this notion of old school customer service in their training. Team members learn to make sure customers know that they matter—that they are always heard and appreciated. I hope these suggestions provide a framework to guide you as you seek to go more “retro” in your service delivery,

News {Holiday Gift Ideas} Last Minute Holiday Gifts, continued from page 1

The holidays are the time to reflect and give thanks to those that have had a positive or meaningful impact in a personal or professional way (or both) throughout the year. Showing your appreciation in the form of a well thought out gift together with some kind, hand-written words from the heart will go a long way in showing how much you care. It’s important to take the time to think about what kind of gift your clients and/or employees want to receive and more importantly actually enjoy using. With that in mind, this short list of ideas was compiled for all the last-minute shoppers in order to help find an ideal gift for clients and staff.

1. Retail Branded Apparel

Suppliers in our industry have worked tirelessly and have done an exceptional job of bridging the gap between the products and brands available at the retail and promotional levels. Nowadays, there is no shortage of retail brands available to buyers in the promotional product marketplace. Coveted brands - like New Balance, Calvin Klein, Cutter & Buck, Nike, FILA, Puma, Oakley, IZOD, New Era, FlexFit, Roots73 (and many more) - are readily available in our marketplace and are typically only a mouse click or two away. I’ve been lucky enough to work in this industry for more than 14 years; in that time, I’ve yet to witness someone receive a beautifully decorated, quality garment - be it a jacket, T-shirt, sweater, cap or toque and not display genuine feelings of happiness and gratitude. Subtly cross-branding these items with your company logo will go a long way in conveying to your clients and/or team members how much you care. Best of all, the gift will be utilized throughout the year and your recipients will remember you well for it!

I’ve yet to witness someone receive a beautifully decorated, quality garment - be it a jacket, t-shirt, sweater, cap or toque - and not display genuine feelings of happiness and gratitude.

2. Premium Gift Sets

The holiday season is the ideal time for gift sets; many industry suppliers have cleverly packaged unique items together into a beautifully curated sets that make for great gifts. Drinkware sets are always a welcome option; whether your targeted demographic are tea drinkers, java heads, wine connoisseurs or spirit drinkers, you can be sure that an elegantly decorated drinkware set will be a hit among both staff and clients. If your recipients are more of the techie or executive types, then a good avenue would be to look at gift sets that include wireless headphones, Bluetooth speakers, or a premium writing instrument coupled with a handy engraved key chain. 20 IMPRINT CANADA | November/December 2016

A good quality bag has all the characteristics that a great gift should have: durable, versatile, useful and desirable. For those with avid DIY’ers among your recipients, a novel idea would be a premium utility set that could include multi-tools, flashlights, tape measures and other versatile tools that they can use to help get whatever “to do” they have on their list get done. Many of these premium gift sets allow come packaged in beautifully arranged boxes which can be further embellished to promote your brand while spreading holiday cheer.

3. Travel / Sport Bags

You can never have too many nice bags, that’s a fact of life. A good quality bag has all the characteristics that any great gift should have: durable, versatile, useful and desirable. Manufacturing quality in our industry has improved markedly throughout the years, and nowadays buyers are virtually spoiled for choice when it comes to accessories - from travel bags to duffels, ruck sacks, messenger bags and knapsacks - there really is no shortage of styles and options available to buyers. Don’t over-think it either; if a bag is well constructed and made of quality material, then your clients and/or staff will use it time and time again (and isn’t that what you want from the gifts you give?). Add a classy embellished touch to the bag with a premium decoration method to showcase your logo, and your holiday gifting is all set and ready to go! And there you have it! Remember, the key to any great last minute gift idea is to ensure that it looks anything but; just because you didn’t think of the gift idea sooner, doesn’t mean it needs to look like the gift was an afterthought. For those of you who like to (or just happen to) wait until the 11th hour to make year-end gifting decision, the suggestions above “check off a lot of boxes” when it comes to determining what even the most discerning people would actually enjoy receiving this year as “thank you”. Happy Holidays!

If you reflect and work on managing yourself every day, I promise you will notice a difference in your humility-toego ratio. To start, I advise picking two behaviors you want to change. Seek the help of trusted others in creating your checklist and ask for their help in holding you accountable. Give them permission to call you out when they see you acting in opposition to your desired new behaviors. The journey to becoming a more humble person will not be short. It will take persistent hard work. And it will be a lifelong endeavor. With humility comes more meaningful relationships, better opportunities, and of course, an increased chance of staying relevant and competitive in the Smart Machine Age. Humility will be needed to maximize one’s effectiveness at thinking, listening, relating, and collaborating. About the Author:

Edward D. Hess is a professor of business administration and Batten Executivein-Residence at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and the author of 11 books, including Learn or Die: Using Science to Build a Leading-Edge Learning Organization, by Columbia Business School Publishing (September 2014).

DO YOU HAVE A BIG EGO?

Try This Five-Minute Self-Assessment Many people who have big egos don’t realize it. They simply think of themselves as competitive, driven, self-assured, or something equally positive. This assessment will help you determine whether or not your ego is (to paraphrase Dr. Seuss in describing the Grinch) “three sizes too big.” Ask yourself: Do these statements describe my usual behavior, True or False? I rarely say, “I don’t know”— especially in public. I rarely admit my mistakes. I rarely talk about my personal weaknesses with colleagues. I don’t often ask for personal feedback. I dislike compromising when I am debating. I interrupt people when they are talking in order to give them the answer. I like solving other people’s problems. I rarely apologize publicly to others when I may have hurt their feelings. I rarely ask people how they are feeling. I always strive to be the leader. I make sure I get the respect I am due. I work hard at looking good to others. I don’t enjoy talking things out with others.

Did you have mostly “trues”? Don’t despair. At least you know you have a problem...and nothing can stop you from doing some humility-building self-improvement work right away!

Waxed Kraft Paper Helps Eliminates Fusion of Fabrics Pritchard Paper’s double sided 2 WAY WAX kraft is converted from the highest quality virgin 44 lb basis weight paper. The 2 WAY WAX is primarily used in the process of cutting fabrics that have the potential to fuse while being cut. As your high speed cutting knives slice through fabrics such as nylon, polyester or water resistant materials, this waxed kraft paper provides a lubricant to your knives which in turn helps eliminate the build up of heat which would otherwise cause these fabrics to melt or fuse together. 2 WAY WAX is also available in a perforated version for all your automated cutting needs. CANADIAN MONTHLY SURVEY OF MANUFACTURING Manufacturing sales rise in 15 of 21 sectors Manufacturing sales increased 0.9 per cent to $51.1 billion in August, reflecting higher sales of food, primary metal, and petroleum and coal products. Sales were up in 15 of 21 industries, representing 69 per cent of the total Canadian manufacturing sector. The increase reflected a higher volume of goods sold, as constant dollar sales rose 1.2 per cent.

Manufacturing down in Clothing and Textile Sectors Clothing manufacturing sales for August 2016 were dropped 5.4 per cent from August 2015 to $185 million, despite a 4.9 per cent increase from July 2016 (see Figure 2). August 2016 manufacturing sales for textile mills and textile product mills also dropped 4.8 percent and 1.8 per cent, respectively from the same month last year.

(DECREASE FROM AUG. 2015 - AUG. 2016)

Sales increase in eight provinces The rise in manufacturing sales was widespread in August, with eight provinces recording increases. Ontario posted the largest sales gain in dollar terms, followed by Alberta and New Brunswick. The only provinces to record declines were Quebec and Newfoundland and Labrador. Sales were up 0.8 per cent in Ontario, reflecting gains in 17 of 21 industries. After a 2.0 per cent decline in July, sales in Alberta were up 2.2 per cent to $5.2 billion in August. Despite the rise in August, manufacturing sales in Alberta were down 7.6 per cent compared with August 2015. In New Brunswick, sales rose 7.4 per cent to $1.4 billion, as sales of durable goods increased 24.4 per cent and sales of non-durable goods were up 3.9 per cent. After three gains in five months, manu34 IMPRINT CANADA

facturing sales in Quebec fell 1.7 per cent to $11.7 billion in August.

Inventory levels fall Manufacturing inventory levels decreased 0.5 per cent to $71.0 billion in August, following a 0.8 per cent increase the previous month. Inventories fell in 12 of 21 industries. The petroleum and coal product industry recorded the largest drop, with inventory levels down 5.9 per cent, following two months of gains. Lower inventories in the food industry (-1.8 per cent) also contributed to the overall decrease. These declines were partly offset by higher inventories in the transportation equipment industry (+1.1 per cent). The inventory-to-sales ratio declined from 1.41 in July to 1.39 in August. This ratio measures the time, in months, that would be required to exhaust inventories if sales were to remain at their current level.

Unfilled orders decline Unfilled orders fell 1.3 per cent to $89.0 billion in August, a second consecutive monthly decline. The decrease in August was partly due to the depreciation of the US dollar relative to the Canadian dollar during the month. Given that most unfilled orders in the industry are held in US dollars, fluctuations in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the US dollar can influence trends in the industry. The decrease in unfilled orders was partially offset by higher unfilled orders in the railroad rolling stock (+5.9 per cent) and primary metal (+6.6 per cent) industries. New orders fell for the second consecutive month, down 0.9 per cent to $50.0 billion in August as a result of declines in the aerospace product and parts, and computer and electronic products industries. The decrease in August was partially offset by higher new orders in the primary metal and railroad rolling stock industries. Source: Statistics Canada
