DTF: The Technology That Revolutionized T-shirt Decoration
By David Sweetnam, Director of Lab Services, Keypoint Intelligence
As COVID turned the world upside down, a new technology emerged that would do the same to apparel decoration. For decades, analogue screenprinting dominated T-shirt production thanks to its low cost per unit at scale, while Direct-To-Garment (DTG) printing established itself as the short-run digital alternative.
Around 2019/2020, Direct to Film (DTF) printers began appearing at trade shows, largely from unfamiliar Chinese manufacturers.
e early commercial rollout was far from smooth.
How Clarity Helps Customers Make Better Decisions Faster
By Adriano Aldini, Imprint Canada
If you’ve been in the promotional products business for any length of time, you’ve seen this countless times.
A client reaches out to you because they know they need something. Maybe it’s apparel for a team, gi s for a client event, or branded merchandise for a product launch. But when you ask what they’re looking for, the response is vague.
“We’re not really sure yet - Something cool, Something different.”
At that moment, most distributors go straight into product mode. ey start pulling ideas, sending links, and building presentations. And then…silence.
Your client isn’t likely ignoring you. e reality is they’re stuck, and not because they lack options, but because they lack clarity.
e most e ective professionals in our industry understand something important. eir job is not just to present products. It’s to help clients think more clearly about what they actually want.

Reason for Optimism
Canada is preparing to export liqui ed natural gas directly to Germany through a major new LNG agreement tied to British Columbia’s Ksi Lisims project.
Beyond the headlines, this represents something larger: growing international con dence in Canada as a stable, long-term economic partner.
At a time when much of the world continues navigating geopolitical uncertainty, supply chain instability and energy security concerns, Canada is increasingly being viewed as a reliable source of both resources and opportunity.
Large-scale economic agreements create ripple e ects that extend far beyond the energy sector itself. Investment drives infrastructure, which creates jobs, which fuels business activity. And stronger business activity typically leads to increased marketing, branding and customer engagement e orts across multiple industries.
Statistics Canada’s latest economic indicators already show signs of resilience, with corporate operating pro ts rising in the rst quarter of 2026 and retail e-commerce sales continuing to grow. While certain sectors continue facing cost pressures and economic uncertainty, the broader picture suggests an economy still nding ways to move forward.
at is important because our industry has always been closely tied to business con dence. When companies feel optimistic about growth, they invest in visibility and brand presence.
Of course, challenges still remain. Rising raw material costs and global economic pressures continue a ecting businesses across Canada. But periods of transition also create opportunities for industries willing to adapt and evolve alongside changing markets.
e promotional products industry has consistently shown that ability.
Creativity, entrepreneurship and relationship-building remain at the core of this business. ose strengths become especially valuable during periods of economic transformation, when companies are looking for smarter, more impactful ways to connect with customers and employees alike.
Canada’s expanding role on the global economic stage is not simply about energy exports. It is about con dence in the country’s long-term potential.
And con dence has a way of creating momentum.

A decorator favourite ideal for screen printing, DTG, heat transfer, and embroidery, making it a versatile choice for brands, teams, and creators who demand both style and reliability.
News {Business Development}
Many users faced inconsistent hardware performance; unreliable customer service; and poor-quality inks, lms, and powders. However, rapid market demand soon attracted established DTG and wide format vendors, bringing greater reliability, stronger support, and higher production standards.
Enter the Keypoint Benchmark Test Service
During this period, Keypoint Intelligence launched an independent benchmark testing program for DTG and DTF printers. e goal was to provide buyers with realworld comparisons across productivity, image quality, ink consumption, and washability. We developed a comprehensive suite of test les covering vector graphics, ne text, laundry symbols, PANTONE spot colours, hal ones, greyscales, skin tones, metallics, and IT8 colour gamut patches.
To standardize washability testing, we purchased home laundry systems, selected a single detergent brand, and partnered with apparel manufacturer Next Level, who supplied 10,000 T-shirts from a single production run. is ensured all evaluations were conducted under identical conditions.
Vendors often advertise maximum print speeds and premium quality modes on the same specification sheet, but those two claims rarely align.
So How Do the Results Stack Up?
Productivity vs. Image Quality
One of the core principles behind our testing is that productivity and image quality must be judged together. Vendors o en advertise maximum print speeds and premium quality modes on the same speci cation sheet, but those two claims rarely align. Most users quickly discover that the fastest modes o en produce output below customer expectations, while the highest-quality modes may be too slow to be commercially viable.
To re ect realistic environments, vendors select the print mode used during testing, knowing that the same setting will be evaluated for image quality, ink consumption, and washability.
Quiz Question 1
What percentage of tested devices had vendors select either their fastest print mode or highest image quality mode for independent evaluation?
a) 0%
b) 17%
c) 24 %
d) 46%
e) 61%
Buyer’s Note: Never judge a device solely on headline speed or quality claims. Always evaluate real-world output that matches your business requirements.
Image Quality
Our tests evaluate performance across a broad range of image-quality criteria on white and black garments. Fine text and line work are particularly revealing. About 68 per cent of tested models produced more legible black text on white shirts than white text on black shirts, an important consideration for applications such as printed laundry symbols.
Early DTF systems all used CMYK plus white inksets with dual-printhead con gurations. While you might expect similar colour gamut sizes across devices, the di erences were signi cant in practice. In our testing, we measured a 46 per cent variance in CIE colour gamut volume between the smallest and largest performers. As vendors introduced systems with three or more printheads, opportunities emerged for expanded inksets incorporating gamut expansion inks, light CMK inks and even neon colours.
Quiz Question 2
How much did the colour gamut of the Sublistar 6004 Star IV expand when switched from CMYK to 12-colour mode?
a) 12 %
b) 21%
c) 29%
d) 38%
e) 63%
One of the most demanding but pro table sectors for DTF providers is corporate branding, where colour accuracy and consistency are critical. Our evaluations measure how closely printers reproduce major PANTONE spot colours using standard work ows, without manual colour correction.
Quiz Question 3
Which corporate colour is hardest for DTF printers to reproduce accurately?
a) Cadbury Purple (PANTONE 2685C)
b) Home Depot Orange (PANTONE 165C)
c) Coca-Cola Red (PANTONE 485C)
d) UPS Brown (PANTONE 476C)
e) McDonald’s Yellow (PANTONE 123C)
Buyer’s Note: Additional ink colours do not automatically guarantee a larger gamut. e recently tested CMYKW ink set Roland TY-300 outperformed many devices that incorporated gamut-expansion inks.
If corporate branding is important to your business, ask vendors to demonstrate manual spot-colour replacement work ows. is provides valuable insight into RIP usability and achievable colour accuracy.
How About Washability?
A garment may look excellent when rst produced, but poor durability can quickly damage customer trust and brand reputation. Our testing evaluates ne detail retention, colour stability, stretch resistance, and overall appearance using real-world home laundry conditions. We standardize testing at 20 wash-and-dry cycles at 30°C using tumble drying and air drying. Garments are inspected every ve cycles to ensure consistent comparative analysis.
We now also o er expanded testing options covering alternative fabrics, bleach exposure, higher wash temperatures, and extended wash-cycle testing.
Quiz Question 4
Which household laundry variables can a ect DTF washability?
a) Wash temperature
b) Spin-cycle speed
c) Drying technique
d) All of the above
Buyer’s Note: Washability depends on a complex interaction between hardware, inks, lm, powder, and garment selection. Minor variations in supply batches can signicantly impact results. Cutting corners on consumables o en leads to inconsistent output and unhappy customers.
Enter Powderless Technology
For years, vendors have promoted powderless systems as safer, more environmentally friendly alternatives capable of delivering improved hand-feel and breathability. Historically, however, wash durability has been the major obstacle. at may now be changing.
Israeli-based Nur Ink Innovations has developed a system with adhesive integrated directly into the white ink, while DuPont has introduced a jettable adhesive applied via an additional printhead a er the white layer. Early results suggest both solutions have made substantial improvements in washability performance. However, challenges remain around slower transfer times compared to traditional TPU powder work ows, but momentum is building quickly.
Keypoint Intelligence has been commissioned by Nur Ink Innovations to conduct o cial washability testing and hopes to evaluate the DuPont solution, as well.
What Does the Future Hold?
DTF remains one of the fastest-moving technologies in digital print, which naturally raises concerns about investment longevity. Many devices sold in 2020 would struggle to compete with today’s systems. Vendors have improved hardware reliability, work ow automation, image quality, and usability, while buyers now expect signi cantly higher levels of consistency and support.
Automation and arti cial intelligence are also expected to play a larger role, driving e ciency gains, automated quality control, and expanded service opportunities.
Despite the pace of innovation, DTF has now matured into a stable and commercially viable production platform.
Businesses that begin building expertise, customer relationships, and production volume today will be best positioned to bene t from the next wave of advancements still to come.

How to Optimize Customer Experience to Boost Retention...and Your Bottom Line
By Olivia Bennett, Imprint Canada
In the promotional products industry, products, pricing, production quality and turnaround times matter immensely. But, customer experience is the real di erentiator that companies overlook.
In a market where clients can source products from countless online suppliers in minutes, optimizing your customer’s experience is paramount. If everyone has access to similar products and technology, the experience that customers have when choosing to work with you o en becomes the deciding factor in whether they become repeat clients.
e reality is that most clients are not just buying branded merchandise. ey are buying convenience, responsiveness, con dence, and reliability. ey want the process to feel easy, they want answers quickly and they want to know someone is guiding them toward the right decisions. Sorry, but simply sending your customers a catalogue and hoping for the best, isn’t a winning strategy.
Most businesses in our industry do not lose customers because of one catastrophic mistake. ey lose them gradually through small frustrations that quietly add friction to the relationship. Slow replies, confusing communication, too much back-and-forth, missed expectations, lack of follow-up are several examples of these small frustrations that add up.
Here are several practical ways to optimize your customer experience for your client base.
Speed Matters More Than Ever
Customer expectations have changed dramatically over the last several years. Today, people are conditioned to
expect near-instant responses. Even in B2B environments, clients increasingly compare every interaction to the speed and convenience they experience elsewhere in their daily lives.
at does not mean every quote needs to be completed within ve minutes. But responsiveness matters immensely.
One of the easiest ways to improve customer experience is simply acknowledging requests quickly and setting clear expectations.
Responding to a customer request within minutes with something like this, “Got it. I’m looking into this now and should have options over to you by tomorrow a ernoon,” instantly creates con dence.
Silence creates uncertainty, so don’t ever leave your clients guessing! Customers can tolerate delays far better than they can tolerate not knowing what’s happening with their order. e companies that communicate clearly and proactively almost always feel more professional, even when problems arise.
Simplify the Buying Process
One of the biggest mistakes in the promotional products industry is overwhelming clients with too many choices. is creates fatigue and friction, which slows the decisionmaking process
Customers come looking for guidance, yet many are handed dozens of product links, hundreds of apparel options, or massive catalogues to sort through themselves.
Strong distributors and decorators simplify the process by curating recommendations.
Instead of sending 10 drinkware options, send three carefully selected choices and explain why each one ts the client’s goals, audience, and budget. A small shi like this changes the interaction from transactional to consultative. Customers feel supported rather than burdened with making the “right” choice on their own.
In many cases, simplifying the process is more valuable than simply o ering the lowest price.
Communication Is Part of the Product
Many companies still treat communication as something separate from the product itself, but the reality is that communication is part of the customer experience.
Customer Experience, continued on Page 12
Optimizing for your customers’ experience is a massive differentiator, especially in commoditized industries.

Six Proven AI Prompts That Will Replace Hours of Repetitive Marketing Work
By Adriano Aldini, Imprint Canada
ere’s a common belief: if you want better marketing, you need more people, more time, and a bigger budget.
Most businesses in our industry have a gap in their strategies rather than outright sta ng issues, and this is where AI is quickly - and quietly - changing the game.
Used properly, tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gamma, Gemini (the list grows daily it seems) can function like an on-demand marketing assistant, helping distributors and decorators research, pitch and position products, and generate content faster than ever. e key is not the tool but knowing how to direct it.
With that in mind, here are six practical prompts that can dramatically improve your work ow and how you market your business.
1. Understand Your Buyer Before You Sell Anything
e best promotional campaigns start with the audience in mind, unfortunately too many start with the product.
PROMPT:
“You are a Business-to-Business (B2B) marketing strategist in the promotional products industry in Canada. Analyze buyers for [target industry or niche] and identify the top three buyer pro les most likely to purchase branded merchandise. For each pro le, outline:
• Key motivations
• Budget sensitivity
• What they value most in branded products
• Emotional triggers that in uence purchasing decisions en recommend how to position promotional products to appeal to each group.”
Why this matters:
Whether you are selling branded apparel, drinkware, or corporate gi sets, your messaging changes dramatically depending on who you are targeting. A construction rm, a tech startup, and a golf tournament organizer are not buying for the same reasons. is prompt forces clarity before you start creating.
2. Position the Product Like a Brand, Not a Commodity
In our industry when products get viewed as commodities, it becomes a race to the bottom. Instead, thinking and acting like a brand strategist will help break this cycle.
PROMPT:
“You are a promotional products marketing strategist. Based on the [product or campaign details], de ne the ideal buyer and recommend a strong market position. Include:
• e story or lifestyle angle behind the product
• e emotional value it delivers
• e features that should be emphasized
• How to di erentiate it from competing products”
Why this matters:
A hoodie is never just a hoodie; it represents team culture, employee retention, or brand visibility. Strong positioning turns ordinary items from a commodity into meaningful business tools, and it turns your company from order-taker to trusted strategist.
3. Turn Product Descriptions Into Experiences
Most product descriptions tend to read like catalogue copy, which is a big missed opportunity.
PROMPT:
“Write a compelling product description for the following promotional item. Focus on how the end user will experience
the product and how it enhances the brand receiving it.
Target audience: [insert buyer pro le]
Tone: polished, engaging, and bene t-driven”
Why this matters:
Clients are not buying SKUs, they are buying outcomes, engagement, stronger brand recall, and a memorable unboxing moment for recipients.
AI can help you generate a strong rst dra that you re ne with your industry expertise.
4. Build Campaigns, Not One-O Posts
Posting a single image of a product is not marketing. e best-performing distributors think in terms of campaigns.
PROMPT:
“Act as a B2B social media strategist for a promotional products company. Create a 7-part campaign to promote a branded merchandise concept.
Include:
• Teaser post
• Product showcase
• Use-case or lifestyle example
• Behind-the-scenes production content
• Client success story
• Short-form video idea
• Final call-to-action
Provide captions and visual direction for each.”
Why this matters:
By now, you must know that consistency wins attention. A structured campaign turns one idea into a week of content and positions you rmly in the minds of your audience as a strategic partner, not just a supplier.
5. Own Your Niche With Long-Term Strategy
e most successful companies in our industry tend to dominate speci c niches rather than chasing every opportunity. AI helps you think beyond the next order.
PROMPT:
“Act as a growth strategist for a promotional products business. Analyze the [industry or local market]. Identify the types of companies most likely to invest in branded merchandise over the next 12–36 months.
en create a 12-month marketing plan that positions the business as the go-to provider in that niche.
Include:
• Content ideas
• Email campaigns
• Local or industry engagement strategies
• Video or social content themes”
Why this matters:
is is how you pivot to becoming a trusted advisor, and that is where margin and loyalty live.
6. Become the Strategic Advisor
When your customers view your input as strategic, they are far more likely to leverage your expertise and heed your suggestions.
PROMPT:
“Act as a senior promotional products consultant specializing in client retention and long-term brand engagement. Based on the following client pro le [insert company, industry, goals, and target audience], recommend three branded merchandise strategies that would strengthen customer loyalty, employee engagement, or brand visibility.
For each strategy include:
• Recommended product categories
• e psychological or emotional reason the campaign works
• Suggested messaging or campaign theme
• Estimated perceived value to the recipient
• How the campaign supports long-term brand recall or relationship-building”
Why this matters:
e distributors and decorators who win long-term are rarely the ones with the cheapest pricing. ey are the ones bringing ideas clients have not thought of yet.
is prompt helps shi the conversation away from “What products do you sell?” toward “How can we help your business create stronger relationships and better brand experiences?”
at is a far more defensible position in a highly competitive industry.
The Bigger Shift
AI is not replacing creativity or relationships in the promotional products industry. It is replacing is time spent on repetitive thinking and execution.
When used properly, these prompts help you:
• Get clearer on your audience
• Market with intention
• Create content faster
• Build more consistent campaigns
In a business where di erentiation is everything, that is a competitive edge worth paying attention to.
When used properly, tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini can function like an on-demand marketing assistant, eliminating repetitive tasks.

News {Business Development}
Clear timelines, organized proofs, realistic expectations, and proactive updates all contribute to how professional your company feels. A customer who receives consistent updates throughout production will usually feel far more con dent than one le wondering whether their order is on track.
is con dence becomes especially important when issues arise. Mistakes will inevitably happen; whether it’s delays, shortages or production errors, sometimes issues just can’t be avoided. But, the thing customers remember most is not the problem itself, but how the issue was handled.
Customers appreciate honesty and transparent com-
munication builds trust. Trying to avoid uncomfortable conversations usually creates much larger frustrations later.
Become The Promotional Sherpa
Clients o en have no idea which products would work best for them. ey may not understand decoration limitations, audience preferences, garment quality di erences, or branding strategy. A er all, this is why they are contacting you to help them. Be the promotional sherpa who guides them through the expansive promotional landscape. One of the biggest opportunities in the promotional products industry is moving beyond transactional selling.
is is where expertise and strategic insight becomes valuable.
e best distributors and decorators ask better questions and have better conversations before ever recommending any products. ose conversations create stronger recommendations and stronger relationships, while positioning you apart from competitors who simply quote requests.
e more customers view you as their sherpa, the less price becomes the only factor driving decisions.
Consistency Builds Trust
Many companies focus heavily on winning new customers while overlooking the importance of consistency and follow-up a er the rst order.
Consistency is what creates reliability; from communication to artwork standards to turnaround expectations - customers notice and appreciate when every interaction feels organized and dependable.
Even small operational improvements can dramatically improve the overall experience.
Simple examples include: Saving repeat logo setups, remembering preferred garment ts or colours, keeping past order notes accessible, streamlining reorder processes and creating cleaner proof approval systems.
ese details reduce friction for the customer and make working with your company feel easier over time. is leads to repeat orders.
Small Details Leave Big Impressions
In an industry built around branding and presentation, small details matter more than many companies realize.
ings like how orders are packaged and arrive to the customer are o en overlooked. How organized are your shipments? Is apparel grouped by size, gender and colour? Is everything polybagged and labelled? Do you follow-up a er delivery?
All these moments are opportunities to shape perception.
A quick follow-up message a er delivery asking: “Just checking in to make sure everything arrived properly and that you’re happy with the order...” can leave a stronger impression than another discount ever will.
Customers remember how businesses make them feel. at is particularly true in service-based industries like ours.
The Customers’ Experience Is Your Brand
Many businesses spend signi cant time thinking about logos, websites, social media, and marketing materials when building their brand. But for most customers, the real brand experience happens in the day-today interactions.
How quickly, clearly and easily did you make the process of dealing with your company?
e companies that consistently grow in this industry are not the ones with the biggest catalogues or the cheapest pricing. ey are the ones that make working with them feel simple, professional, reliable, and enjoyable.
Pricing may initially win attention, but customer experience is what keeps clients coming back.
Customers notice and appreciate when every interaction feels organized and dependable.
Essential Collection
News {Business Development}
The most valuable thing you can offer your clients isn’t another product idea, but rather clarity.
When you can do that well, decisions happen faster, conversations become easier, and your role shi s from vendor to trusted advisor.
A Simple Framework That Changes the Conversation
When a client is unsure, the instinct is to guide them by showing them more options. is is o en a mistake. ey don’t need more choices, what they need is help sorting their own thoughts rst.
A simple four-question approach can transform how these conversations unfold:
1. What’s working right now?
Start by asking what they were happy with and what is currently working for them. Maybe their last campaign generated strong engagement. is question grounds the conversation in positives and helps you identify what should be carried forward.
2. What’s not working?
is is where the real opportunity lies. Clients will o en reveal frustrations they didn’t initially mention. Maybe a past merchandise order felt generic, or maybe the turnaround time was too long. It’s possible the items sourced didn’t create the impact they expected. is is where you uncover problems you can directly solve.
3. What would the ideal outcome look like? is is where imagination comes into play. Encourage them to describe what “great” would look like if there were no limitations. Discover what they are really trying to achieve with this campaign: More engagement? Something employees actually keep and use? is helps de ne the target you’re aiming for.
4. What constraints are we working with?
Every decision has boundaries. Whether it’s budget, timelines, branding guidelines, or internal approvals, these all play a role. Identifying these upfront prevents misalignment and helps you propose solutions that are realistic from the start.
Why This Works So Well
e promotional products industry is lled with choice, which can be both a strength and a challenge.
From apparel and drinkware to tech accessories and hard goods, the options are endless. Remember that your clients don’t live in this world every day, so this level of choice can easily feel overwhelming. And when people are overwhelmed, they tend to hesitate.
By walking them through these questions, you’re helping them organize their thinking and visualize their ideal outcome. You’re turning a vague idea into a clear direction, and this is something very powerful, because once clarity exists, decisions tend to follow.
From Order Taker to Trusted Advisor
ere’s a noticeable shi that happens when you adopt this approach. Instead of reacting to requests, you begin leading conversations. Instead of sending random options, you present curated solutions tied directly to what the client told you matters. at changes how you’re perceived; you’re no longer just
When clients are clear on what matters, they don’t need to review 10 options. They only need to evaluate two or three that align with their goals.
someone who supplies products but someone who understands their business, their goals, and the outcome they’re trying to achieve.
You want a perception that builds trust, which leads to stronger relationships, repeat business, and fewer pricedriven conversations.
Find Intent & Purpose
Imagine a client says they need branded apparel for an upcoming event. A typical response might be to send a selection of polos, hoodies, and tees.
But with a more structured conversation, the outcome could look very di erent.
You learn they liked the quality of their previous apparel but found it lacked excitement. ey were disappointed that employees didn’t wear it a er the event. Ideally, they want something people actually choose to keep. e budget is exible, but timelines are tight.
As a result of all this information, your recommendation naturally evolves. Instead of standard options, you might suggest a premium, retail-inspired piece with a modern t and eye-catching branding. You could propose packaging that elevates the experience. You might even position it as a “thank you” gi rather than just event apparel.
Speed Comes From Clarity
One of the biggest bene ts of this approach is how quickly it accelerates decisions.
When clients are clear on what matters, they don’t need to review 10 options. ey only need to evaluate two or three that align with their goals.
is reduces back-and-forth, shortens timelines, and improves your close rate. In a fast-moving business where responsiveness matters, that’s a meaningful advantage.
Listening Di erently
At its core, this isn’t about asking more questions. It’s about asking better ones. It’s about slowing down just enough at the beginning of a conversation to speed everything up a erward.
It’s also about recognizing that the most valuable thing you can o er your clients isn’t another product idea, but rather clarity.
When you help customers think more clearly, you help them choose more con dently. And when that happens, you don’t just win the order, ayou cement their trust.
One of the biggest benefits of this approach is how quickly it accelerates decisions.
