Introduction for the facilitator Impaq’s approach to First Additional Language in Grade 2 Learning a first additional language is very similar to learning a home language, but it occurs much later in a child’s life. Learners go through the same learning processes as with their home language. Learners acquire their home language at a very early age. It involves exposure to vocabulary and language structures in a simple context. Then they start talking in short sentences and use words to give meaning.

The process for learning an additional language is exactly the same. Learners develop a vocabulary and then start forming simple sentences and carrying out instructions. The learning programme for First Additional Language in Grade 2 focuses on building on the basic skills established in Grade 1. There is still a strong emphasis on developing oral language skills and vocabulary, but in Grade 2, the scope broadens to include reading, writing and language structures. These activities are designed based on the principles already established in the home language, and learners can build on their existing knowledge. While Grade 1 learners spend a lot of time listening and speaking in the additional language, in Grades 2 and 3, they focus more on reading and writing in their additional language.

Reading (Lees)

The First Additional Language in Grade 2 begins at a level where learners can already do Grade 1 work. By now, learners should have an extensive vocabulary in the additional language. They should be able to follow simple instructions and answer simple questions with short sentences. Learners should be able to listen to easy stories and follow storylines. Listening and speaking activities are linked to themes and include conversations, picture discussions, rhymes and games.

Reading skills are an important component of the Grade 2 Home Language programme. For the First Additional Language programme, the focus is less on reading skills as learners will master their reading skills in their home language.

The reading programme for the additional language includes: • shared reading, where the facilitator reads the story, while the learners look at the pictures and follow along in the book; • independent reading, where learners read stories in the additional language on their own; and • booklets about language structures and various skills to better understand the language.

Phonics (Klanke) As with Home Language, the learners must first learn to break up written words into sounds. They must develop phonemic awareness and identify the relationship between a sound and a letter. For First Additional Language in Grade 2, this happens in the first term. Because learners have already learnt all the sounds in their home language, and the explosive sounds are nearly the same, they should master all the sounds quickly.

It is important to remember that learners can already analyse words and identify sounds in their home language. They should find it easier to analyse words and recognise sounds in their additional language. Learners must understand that sounds in their additional language look the same as in their home language, but sound different, e.g. l – oo – k = look, but in Afrikaans the ‘oo’ does not sound the same, e.g. b – oo – m = boom. Word recognition is important for reading and writing. Sight words appear frequently in texts. They are mastered by seeing them repeatedly, later recognising them, and then reading them. Display these words in class for the duration of the story. Draw a picture next to each word to make associations easier. High-frequency words frequently appear in texts, including dit, is, die, etc. They can be sounded out, but it is important that learners recognise and read them rather than sounding them.

Writing (Skryf)

The Home Language programme provides for the systematic mastering of handwriting skills, and this knowlege is applied in the First Additional Language. Learners will focus on writing short words or sentences throughout the year. By the end of the year, they should be able to write about three sentences in the additional language. It is important to remind learners throughout the year to correct misspelled words. This is part of the learning process to ensure correct spelling in the additional language is mastered.

Spelling tests

From the third term, learners will write spelling tests with sounds they have learnt. Spelling tests help learners to use the correct spelling in their writing.

How to use materials and resources

The Grade 2 package includes: 1. Facilitator’s guide 2. Workbook 3. Lees is lekker, Graad 2, Fases 5–8 4. Grootboekstories (Big Books) 5. Facilitator aid 6. Learner aid 7. Assessment (portfolio book and portfolio memorandum)

You have to buy: • A grey pencil, crayons, and/or twist crayons for the writing activities. Grade 2 learners write only with these. • Additional storybooks chosen by the facilitator. Facilitator’s Guide This guide contains 20 learning units. Every learning unit is spread over two weeks, and covers 10 days. Each day is divided into one or two language sessions that cover listening and speaking, reading and phonics, and writing. Refer to the proposed day programme for the time allocation of these sessions. Each session ends with two information boxes: Conceptualisation and Resources. The conseptualisation box summarises the concepts that are embedded, while the resources box provides a list of items provided (і) and/or required (�) for the session.

The facilitator’s guide indicates which learner aid, facilitator aid, Big Book story, reader, or workbook activity, must be used with the lesson. Two symbols are used in each session: Indicates what the facilitator must do. Indicates what the learner must do. Workbook

The workbook contains 65 activities that support the development of reading and writing skills. Reading Series: Lees is lekker

Each reader contains five stories, starting with simple stories and becoming more complex as the learner’s sight word vocabulary improves. Grootboekstories

Grootboeke (Big Books) are larger versions of storybooks and are used by facilitators to share the stories with the whole class or a smaller group of learners. Large, easy-to-read text and colourful illustrations encourage participation and support shared reading, as learners can see the words and follow as you read. Guide them through the story by tracking the words with your finger or a ruler as you read. Learners must sit comfortably around you and the Big Book so that everyone can see the illustrations and read the text.

English translations of the Afrikaans text are provided in the book to assist learners with the language association. The translations are literal and nearly word-for-word to help learners understand the meaning of the English text and to make connections between words from their home language and those in their First Additional Language. There are two Grootboekstories, one for Terms 1 and 2, and one for Terms 3 and 4. The stories are divided as follows:

Make your own Big Book stand You will need: 1. cardboard with the same width as an open Big Book (594 mm) and three times the length (1 360 mm) 2. masking tape 3. two clothes pegs to keep the cardboard in place

Facilitator aid

Fold the cardboard to make an A-shape and secure the base and the front, as illustrated. If you do not have a piece of cardboard long enough, you can join separate pieces of cardboard using masking tape.

The resources in the learner aid supplement the workbook activities and stories.

How to choose a storybook The Grade 2 Home Language and First Additional Language programmes often refer to stories the facilitator must read to the learners. The facilitator, or the learners, may choose stories. It is important to choose books that encourage learners to read. Choose stories that are appropriate for the learners’ developmental level, but more importantly, ones that stimulate their interest in reading. At first, Home Language learners read with the facilitator; later they read on their own. In First Additional Language, learners listen to the stories, and later in the year, they are expected to read simple stories themselves.

Consider these aspects when choosing storybooks for learners: • Learners must enjoy the stories. • Pictures in the books must be appropriate for Grade 2 learners. • The vocabulary in the stories must apply to Grade 2 learners. During the year, stories can gradually become more difficult. Always explain difficult words. Learners don’t have to read them, but must understand their meaning. • Regularly reread stories but also introduce the learners to new books often. The list below includes recommended books suitable for Grade 2. You do not have to buy storybooks. Borrow books from a library; in this way, you can introduce the learners to a variety of books.

Screen time Impaq’s approach to screen time is to keep it at a minimum because learners still have important developmental steps to reach by playing and being active. If screen time is allowed, we encourage facilitators to use it for the first additional language. Many fun programmes help children to acquire the additional language in a short time by, among others, broadening their vocabulary.

According to studies, screen time should be regulated as follows: • Children younger than 2 years – no screen time. • Children aged 2–5 – no more than an hour a day, under supervision. • Children aged 5–17 – no more than two hours a day, except for homework.

Zak

The character Zak is engaging, and the facilitator can use him to bring the additional language to life. Zak appears on every page of the workbook, and there is also a hand puppet learners can make (Week 1, Day 2). It is encouraging for learners to associate the additional language with a friendly face like Zak’s.

Week 1

In the first term, revise the vocabulary learnt in Grade 1 continuously. Encourage learners to speak Afrikaans as much as possible. They should have a very large basic vocabulary by now.

In listening and speaking sessions, learners should be able to carry out simple instructions, such as “Maak asseblief die deur toe”. They should be able to answer and ask simple questions: “Wie se boek is dit?” and “Kan ek ’n glas water kry?” They must also be able to listen to stories and understand many words and sentences. The facilitator may still explain difficult words to acquire new vocabulary.

We will also review all the sounds in the quarter. Every week, three sounds are done. Use the sound cards in the Learner aid, and practise them every day. Just as in home language, explosive sounds are used. Learners will also learn sight words every week. Tip: If learners are allowed screen time, use it to show them stories in the additional language. This way, they still learn vocabulary and get to know the language better.

Begin each day by greeting the learners, as in Grade 1.

Zak will accompany us again this year. If you didn’t make a hand puppet last year, you can follow the instructions below. Learners enjoy making associations. Unfortunately, Zak can only speak English, and the learners must help him learn Afrikaans words.

How to make Zak

Place your hand flat on a newspaper. Draw the pattern around your hand, leaving an additional 5–8 cm of space on each side. Cut out the pattern. Place the newspaper pattern on your choice of material. It should be a fairly thick material. Draw the pattern on the material twice and cut it out. Choose a different colour material for the mouth sections and cut out two mouth pieces. Using a sewing machine, stitch the two mouth sections to the body material. Ensure you know which sides are the inside and outside of your puppet. Sew the two body sections together, but do not stitch the mouth parts together. Leave the ‘throat’ part of the mouth open. This allows your puppet to ‘eat’ things and store them inside. To finish, sew bits of Velcro to the bodice of the puppet. This allows you to attach various accessories, such as shapes, colours, and bells. Be creative and add any additional features you like to make your puppet unique and fun!

Try these tips: Shapes and colours: Cut out different shapes and colours and attach them with Velcro. Bells and songs: Attach small bells to the puppet for interactive singing sessions. Personalise: Add eyes, hair, or any other features to make the puppet more lifelike and engaging.

Enjoy creating and playing with your custom hand puppet!

Your hand puppet only comes out when it’s time to speak Afrikaans. He greets the learners and teaches them the different vocabulary and phonics.

Sessie 1: Luister en praat: Ek is uniek

Ask learners whether they are excited about the new year. Have a conversation with them about their bodies; they learnt the vocabulary for body parts last year. Repeat all the vocabulary. Play the game “Vinnige Fanie sê” (“Simon Says ...”) with the learners.

Rules of the game: • The facilitator starts a sentence with Vinnige Fanie sê ... • Any word or colour can then be mentioned. • The learners must carry out the instructions. • The facilitator repeats this a few times and then leaves out the words Vinnige Fanie sê. Learners should not carry out the instructions. • Learners who do carry out the instructions are out, or you can give a counter to the learners who got it right. This ensures that all learners are still part of the game and the learning process. • The learner who first has 5 counters wins.

Adapt the game for each theme. In today’s session, body parts should be used. For example: • Vinnige Fanie sê raak aan jou mond. • Vinnige Fanie sê sit albei jou hande op jou kop. • Vinnige Fanie sê skud jou lyfie. • Vinnige Fanie sê swaai jou arms. Continue with the game until all body parts are used. For the next few weeks, we will learn a new sound each day. Learners should be familiar with the sounds in their home language. Perhaps use a large sheet of paper or the blackboard to add the new sounds each week.
