Tom sees double

7

New people have moved in next door to Tom and Tandi. Mom says they are the new neighbours. The children are curious and want to see what the strangers look like. Are they hairy? Are they scary? They sneak to the garden gate to take a peek. They look this way and that way but can’t see anyone. 8

They hear children laughing. A dog barks happily. “Fetch the ball, Max!” a girl shouts. Carefully, Tom and Tandi peek over the wall. There are two girls in the garden. Each girl is playing with a small dog. Tom frowns, he is confused. He rubs his eyes. “I am seeing two of everything,” he says. Tandi laughs. “No, Tom, they are twins.”

Tom stares at the two girls. “They look exactly the same, he says.

Tandi explains that to be a twin you have to be born from the same mother on the same day. That means they share a birthday. They are also the same height and like to sometimes wear the same clothes. 10
