river fishing on the swinton estate

Description

Important information

The Swinton Estate offers exceptional river fishing, with four miles of singlebank fishing along the River Ure and over six miles of double-bank access on the River Burn. These beautifully managed waters are home to salmon, wild brown trout and grayling.

Over the past 35 years, dedicated stewardship has transformed the River Ure, with water quality improving significantly and salmon numbers rising in response.

In partnership with the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust, Swinton Estate has recently supported extensive habitat restoration work, the result is a thriving river system where juvenile salmon populations at key sites now rival those found on some of the UK’s most celebrated salmon rivers.

The River Burn flows through the heart of the Swinton Estate. Rising on Masham Moor, it winds its way through the tranquil valley of Colsterdale, passing the picturesque villages of Healey and Fearby before joining the River Ure just south of Masham.

A particular favourite of the Earl of Swinton, the River Burn rewards those who seek a more traditional and quiet day on the water.

Suppporting wildlife on the estate

Enhance your experience

Swinton Estate plays an active role in protecting and supporting its birdlife. Regular bird counts are carried out to monitor species and populations, helping to guide conservation efforts and habitat improvements.

Through careful land and wildlife management, including the maintenance of SSSI moorland, winter crops and wetland areas, the estate provides a rich and balanced environment. This approach supports a wide range of species.

If you’d like to learn more about the birds you encounter, the Merlin Bird ID app is a great companion. It can help you quickly identify species by sight or sound, adding an extra layer of interest to your visit.

parkland and gardens

Description

Area

Set within 200 acres of historic parkland, Swinton Park Hotel offers a serene space to explore and unwind. Designed in the 1760s by the Danby family and inspired by Capability Brown, the landscape features lakes, woodland and elegant follies.

The gardens are beautiful year-round, from spring bulbs to summer blooms, with scenic walking routes taking in highlights such as Coffin Lake, Quarry Gill and Top Lake. Guests staying at the hotel, dining, or visiting the Spa or Country Club enjoy complimentary access during their visit.

The Walled Garden

One of the largest in England, the four-acre Walled Garden is both beautiful and productive. As a working kitchen garden, it supplies the estate’s restaurants with an abundance of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, with more than 60 varieties grown on site. In the warmer months, it’s full of life, and you may even spot chefs gathering fresh ingredients. A colourful cutting garden also provides flowers for displays throughout the hotel.

Lakes, Wildlife & Estate Life

At the heart of the parkland lies Home Lake, a graceful serpentine stretch of water. During the season, you may see fly-fishing lessons taking place here, while nearby, the aviary, housed in a former orangery, is home to an impressive collection of birds of prey.

The deer park is another highlight, where a herd of around 120 wild fallow deer roam freely. This long-established herd adds to the magic of the landscape, particularly in summer evenings when they can often be seen grazing across the parkland.
