Laid out in the 1850’s by Sir James Matheson the, grounds are a rich historical jewel to Stornoway and an outstanding example of an ornamental Victorian landscape, boasting elevated views over Stornoway and out to sea.

Built in 1862 by engineer David Stephenson, the red brick lighthouse stands at Rubha Robhanais, the most northerly point of the Western Isles and was home to a number of keepers until 1998.
