The Burghfield Santas received three nominations from Ben Twomey, Emma Shumsky and Kylie Duncan. The group organise numerous fund raising events including a pub crawl, fun runs, Burghfest and the Burghfield Box-Kart bash. These activities have raised huge amounts of money for worthy causes (including £150k for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance) and instil a fantastic sense of community. The Santas said, “Thank you all so much for your support over the years! Last night we were honoured to be invited to a reception at the West Berkshire Council offices to receive an award for Community Group of the Year! It was quite humbling, hearing the stories of the other nominated groups and what they do. Thank you for your support!”

Many of you will be aware of the fundraising efforts for Oliver Warner, a five year old boy who goes to Bramley Primary School diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma. His family and clinician have identified an immunotherapy treatment in Barcelona as the next best option to try to clear the disease. His friends & family have been fundraising tirelessly. When we saw this video that Oliver’s primary school had put together back in December, we had to share it on our Facebook page and with our readers. It was a massive team effort by Oliver's friends and teachers. Well done Bramley Primary - go, kick cancer’s butt! Facebook search Bramley School to watch it. Since the video was released, Oliver has travelled to Barcelona and it’s great news ... Here’s one of the latest updates from his family on their fb page: “Thanks for all the lovely messages we’ve received over the last few days - it really does help knowing how much support we have. All Oliver’s scans are now finished, which is a massive relief - they’re all very much routine for us in the UK but in a different

We met Oliver’s Consultant this afternoon and had the fantastic news that, with the exception of one test that will take a few more days, all his scans are clear of Neuroblastoma. This is obviously an enormous relief to us. However, as we were told today, without more treatment, it’s pretty much a 100% certainty that he would relapse again. The immunotherapy treatment he’ll be having in Barcelona gives him a real chance to beat this, with cure rates of about 40%. Raise over £60k for Brittle Bone Society! Local family fundraisers, the Edneys have gone down in history, making the biggest single donation in history at The Brittle Bone Society AGM - a staggering £60,76!!

With his son suffering from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a severe form of Brittle Bone disease, Steve Edney set himself the challenge of raising £20,000 across the year by taking part in 12 fundraising events in 12 months. These included a Tough Mudder, a cycle event, music session and a charity auction. Tadley RFC, Steve’s rugby club, made the Brittle Bone Society their chosen charity for the year and raised £5,000 through a whole host of events including a steam fair, charity golf day and having a donation box on the bar all year. Steve smashed the target early on with support from local clubs and businesses, but had no idea how his son’s charm was going to snowball the fundraising. Last year, Max visited the BBC Radio 2 studios to record a message for The Chris Evans breakfast show in the lead up to Children in Need. When it was played again more recently, it resulted in a surge of donations, Max called the show and left a message to thank Chris Evans for playing the clip. That led to Max being invited to be a guest on the show, which led to the DJ’s end-of-year Christmas party being named ChrisMax in his honour. It was to raise money for the Brittle Bone Society as well as Children In Need. Max and his mum, Leanne, went onto the One Show with Chris Evans to raise awareness of OI, and the following night they were at the O2 for Chris Evans’ Ultimate Christmas Party, ChrisMax! Max thoroughly enjoyed the evening and met lots of famous faces. The whole family has done a simply splendid job of fundraising and raising awareness. Congratulations! Not retiring from “All That Jazz” at 80! Band leader, Graeme Hewitt of The High Society Jazz Band, experienced an outcry from fans when he considered retiring (at almost 80!) earlier this year. And we can see why. This traditional jazz band are at the top of their game. Why did no-one tell us that we can find them in THEALE!!? We were blown away by the number of jazz greats who have played with the band - in such local venues - and still visit as guests.
WORK BUTT NAKED? REALLY?! There appears to be a holiday for just about every concept under the sun these days, so should we be surprised that there is such a thing as Working Naked Day? As its name suggests, Working Naked Day is the day in which you carry out the day’s work unclothed. It should be hastily mentioned, of course, that this does not mean that your turn up at a place of work naked – rather, the whole point is that the day celebrates the act of working from home and the freedom that results from this situation. If you are still shy, then bear in mind that the day can be celebrated by wearing pyjamas.
Jazz legends Kenny Ball and Chris Barber played with the band at the Post House Hotel in Reading when Graeme worked there, along with Humphrey Lyttelton and Acker Bilk, a personal friend of Graeme with whom he recorded Stranger on the Shore a number of times. The guest list at the band’s current residency in Theale is extensive, too. Enrico Tomasso (with Acker Bilk for many years and a personal friend of Louis Armstrong) will be there on 22nd January. Peter Rudeforth and Mike
Henry - both currently with Chris Barber - Amy Roberts, Andy Dickens, Pete Allen, Ben Cummings are all top names in jazz and regularly grace their stage. Most recently, Digby Fairweather has agreed to put in an appearance, too. Kenny Ball was so keen to play with Graeme’s band that one night he escaped hospital to be there! He had been booked to play but had just been taken in with pneumonia. He called his roadie to ask him to pick him up, and to bring his trumpet, telling him, “I won’t let Graeme down.” He
played the set and got back to hospital, without being missed, at 1.30am! Graeme Hewitt’s High Society Jazz Band play weekly on a Tuesday evening at Theale Village Hall. It has a wonderful, friendly atmosphere, a large off-road car park, a club-priced bar and a good dance floor. Entry is by a raffle, for which there is a charge of £10.00 2019 will see the band continuing to fly the flag for traditional jazz, so do go along and treat yourself to some top-notch live music, right on your doorstep.

Weddings are filled with traditions, from what the couple wears to how they schedule the day’s events, but Millennial couples are switching things up by modernising wedding traditions, along with where the weddings are held and how they are planned. According to WeddingWires 2018 report, today’s engaged couples are putting their own spin on how they plan their wedding. They’re giving their bridesmaids more flexibility in what dresses they wear, adding surprising elements to the reception and are including local details into various wedding moments themselves. But it’s a Wednesday! It’s official, midweek weddings are on the rise. Recent figures show 1 in 3 couples are now opting to get hitched outside the traditional weekend slot. When selecting dates, luck can feel in short supply when looking to secure a popular venue for a Saturday wedding in peak season. Significant discounts, weekday venue availability and increased choice of wedding services are all playing a big part in boosting the midweek wedding trend.
‘Nearly weekend’ weddings have seen a huge increase in popularity, with 21,700 Thursday ceremonies in 2018, 6,000 more than ten years ago in 2008. And those numbers are increasing year on year, as couples give their nearest and dearest a great reason to start the weekend early. Venues & Ceremonies are changing too... We live atop shifting sands, at least as far as faith is concerned. Part of the change is that fewer of us are practicing Christians or follow any faith. And as a result, the percentage of weddings that take place in churches has plummeted, dropping by almost half in less than a decade. Reporting on a survey from a leading wedding website, The Evangelical Facts & Trends discussed religion’s recession from the wedding landscape. It seems that religious congregations hosted 22 percent of weddings in 2017, down from 41 percent in 2009. Churches are losing ground to bespoke venues, halls, hotels, country clubs, wineries, rooftops and even museums. Clergy are solemnising fewer and fewer marriages too. Instead, couples are turning to civil magistrates, celebrants or even loved ones who obtain credentials. In 2009, 29 percent of couples had a celebrant, friend or family member solemnise their wedding. That number had increased to 43 percent by 2016. The trend continues to grow...

Wedding Parties Are Mixing it Up... Sometimes a bride’s best friend is a guy, and maybe the groom wants his sister as the best woman. Millennial couples are aware that gender-specific wedding party roles don’t always fit with the reality of their relationships, so they’re mixing things up. 40 percent of couples, an increase of 14 percent since 2015, are having more gender-fluid wedding parties,
where the couple will choose the bridesmaids/bridesmen, groomsmen/groomswomen, maid or man of honor and best man or woman based on which relationships they want to honour.

Be Beautiful My Valentine Now that Christmas is over (boo) the next holiday is Valentine’s Day. I love Valentine’s Day, it’s a chance to dress up and use my fanciest make up, glitter eye shadow and all! But whether I go on a day date or an evening one, one thing is for sure, I need my make up to last.
A good foundation is key to making my make up last and I can finally say, hand on heart, that I have found my holy grail foundation and that is Revlon’s Colour Stay. The natural, noncakey finish rivals my luxury foundations and the fact it comes in two finishes, one for normal/dry skin and the other for combination/oily skin makes it the most impressive budget foundation for me. It also comes in a large selection of colours and undertones, which was the selling point for me as I have never been able to find a budget foundation that was yellow in tone and actually matched my skin colour. So this is revolutionary to me! Also, this foundation lasts on my skin, it really does – I don’t even need to powder during the day! This foundation will definitely be the one I’ll be wearing on Valentine’s Day and I really can’t recommend it enough. Another vital item of make up that I use to make it last is my NYX Matte Finish Make Up Setting Spray and this stuff really is the best at making my make up last all day long. NYX is a relatively new make up brand in the UK after it having such success in the US and I am so glad it’s finally arrived here (available on Boots online). Their products are relatively cheap and they are such good quality, I haven’t purchased anything and regretted it, they’re definitely worth checking out! Back to the make up spray and this would be great for a day date as you can apply it first thing in the morning and then top it up before the evening and your make up will still look as fresh as it did first thing. Lastly, what says date night make up more than a bold lipstick? Especially for Valentine’s Day you need a lipstick that you don’t have to worry about touching up during the day or night. My all time favourite lipstick (and I do have a lot) has to be my Nars Satin Lip Pencil in the shade Luxembourg. It’s a very bright pink/red and it really does last on my lips without feeling dry at all. Best of all, it really does last through any meal, I’ve eaten a three course meal, gone to the bathroom and my lipstick has not budged or moved, it’s perfect! Nars is a luxury brand, but their lipstick pencils are fab, they come in so many colours and finishes, it’s impossible to walk away with just one!

This roasted carrot and fennel soup is bursting with flavour, Roasting the vegetables brings out a subtle sweetness from the carrots & fennel, add that with the gentle flavor of thyme and then the hit of garlic and the result is a perfect winter-warmer! It makes a great lunch or would be a great starter if you serve it in smaller portions.
Roasted Carrot & Fennel Soup
500g carrots, 1 medium sliced fennel bulb,1 sweet & 1 regular potato (cut into chunks) 4 sprigs of thyme 1 litre of vegetable or chicken stock 3 tbs olive oil 1 medium white onion, 2 cloves of garlic, minced 4 tbs full fat yogurt (optional) Sea salt & black pepper Ciabatta to serve
Preparation and cooking time: 20 minutes

Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees C, add the sliced carrots, fennel, potatoes, thyme and 2 tbs of olive oil to a baking tray, give it a little mix up to make sure everything is covered in olive oil. Place the tray on the middle rack in the oven and roast for about 15 – 20 minutes. Heat 1 tbs of olive oil in a large sauce pan, add the onion and cook gently until the onion is translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. As soon as the carrots, fennel & potatoes are done, remove the sprigs of thyme and add the vegetables to the sauce pan. Mix well and then add a pinch of sea salt, a little freshly ground black pepper and the stock. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. While the soup is simmering, slice ciabatta on the diagonal, drizzle with remaining olive oil and pop into oven until lightly toasted. Remove and set aside. After 20 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat, take out a ladel-full of the chunky ingredients and then blitz the rest with a hand held blender until it is smooth. Serve with a pile of the unblitzed ingredients, a dollop of yogurt (optional) and the toasted ciabatta. Perfect :)

Honey and Cinnamon... Amazing health benefits - or just a myth? An article on the miraculous health benefits of honey and cinnamon has been recycled and passed around as new information periodically over the years, making a reappearance just last month on many Facebook pages. Those sharing the article touted it as if these medicinal virtues were only recently discovered, but according to Snopes.com, the article originated in 1995 – published in the Weekly World News, a tabloid well-known for publishing fictional outlandish reports of things like Elvis returning from the dead and alien affairs being the cause of a break-up among celebrity couples. It’s sometimes hard to take everything seriously that we read online but in this case there appears to be quite a bit of truth when it comes to the significant nutritional and health benefits of honey and cinnamon... Since ancient times, honey has been enjoyed as a nutritional food, as well as for healing. Honey is a powerful immune system booster. It’s antioxidant and antibacterial properties can help improve the digestive system and help you stay healthy and fight disease. It has also been claimed that honey possesses carcinogen-preventing properties, resulting in increasingly more studies pointing to the role of honey in the prevention
of cancer. On a less serious note, pop some honey onto a cut or graze and you should see the healing process take place more quickly. Cinnamon, too, has been well-known for its medicinal uses for thousands of years. Scientific studies have proven some of its benefits. Cinnamon can treat Type 2 Diabetes by lowering blood sugar levels and increasing the amount of insulin production in the body. It is also known for reducing inflammation, lowering cholesterol and offers one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any spice. It has also been proven in treating yeast infections due to its antifungal properties.

Where your honey comes from makes all the difference. Not all honey is the same, Most honey is highly processed, removing the pollen and thus even the origin of the honey. An earlier report found that at least a third of all honey consumed in the U.S. was likely smuggled from China and may be tainted with heavy metals and illegal antibiotics.Not only will you not reap the wondrous benefits of honey, but you could be getting unwanted toxins as well. Your best bet is to purchase raw, unprocessed honey locally or from a health foods store.
You can buy cinnamon in a powder, in sticks, as a supplement, and as cinnamon extract. If you want to introduce some cinnamon into your normal diet try to use a variety of sticks and powders in different foods and drinks to keep it interesting. (Though we wouldn’t recommend ingesting teaspoonfuls of the stuff à la ‘cinnamon challenge’ - which is probably not pleasant and possibly dangerous!) But you could try adding a stick to the pan when you are cooking rice, or a teaspoon of the powdered stuff in a hot drink to dry up a runny nose. Interestingly, whilst researching this topic, we learned that adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to a meal that is high in carbohydrates can lessen the impact this food will have on your blood sugar levels. After eating, blood sugar rises as your stomach empties, but adding cinnamon can help to slow this process down and thus lower the rise in your blood sugar levels!

Drives... Kia is one of those quiet brands that’s easy to forget about. So I decided to find out how it stacks up against the conventional offerings from the Germans (and Ford’s Mondeo). The Optima PHEV sits around options such as the Ford Mondeo hybrid and VW Passat GTE. It’s a plug-in hybrid, meaning is has more electric range than one that you can’t charge up from the mains, putting it one step ahead of the Mondeo. The saloon can run for 33 miles on electric power only, raising to 38 miles for the estate given more space for batteries. This is one of the main factors contributing to the claimed 177mpg and 202mpg respectively. You may get this if your commute is around town, but on the open road the conventional petrol engine will kick in. If this is the case you can expect fuel economy more in line with conventional petrol powered cars in the ballpark of 50mpg.
This is where I start talking about who this car is best for. Given that the claimed mpg and g/km of CO2 figures are very impressive, this is a great option for company car users who could make considerable savings over something like the Mondeo. Private buyers won’t benefit so much because you’re unlikely to get these figures in real life driving, literally burning up those fuel savings. Also the Optima PHEV isn’t the cheapest at £34k, which is the same on-the-road price as the brand new 3-series (not in hybrid guise). This will likely return similar if not better fuel economy on the open road and a much better driving experience. If you are set on a hybrid the BMW 330e will offer much more performance and fun for still not much more. The dynamics of the Optima are comfort over dynamic ability. There is some body roll and the steering is a bit vague, but the cabin is well insulated from bumps. Although the performance isn’t great - early 9 seconds to 62mph - it doesn’t feel sluggish due to the immediacy of power from electric motors.

Are you friends with EVERYONE on facebook? Do you use the same password for all your accounts and websites you buy from? If you are nodding your head, then you are definitely a hot target for cyber criminals
Some people are simply not as nice and trustworthy as you are. Hackers want your details to commit ID fraud and steal YOUR money. They’ll use your PIN, your dogs name or even where you are going on holiday (and in some cases, still are). In the extreme, they’ll even hack into your hard drive and hold your files to ransom. Please don’t let them. Think about using a different passwords for each account or site? Nearly twenty years after the internets conception, the Global security market is now worth over £43bn - and whilst there are 1000’s of products and services available to help protect you, the biggest online security risk is still people using inadequate password methods. The most popular form of hacking is still password guessing. Hackers flick through your

Make them long, include special characters , change often and use the same one for multiple accounts
facebook account to deduce that it’s the name of your children, pets or even your date of birth. 80 percent of people are still using use the word “password” as their password, which, let’s face it - is a criminals dream. If you have a different password for every account you have - email, AppleID, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, and so on - and make your password a combination of upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols, it’s harder to crack. Perhaps you can devise your own algorithm for each account to make it easier to remember which password you’ve used for what. It is a good idea to make sure that you NEVER ever reuse your main email password for other accounts either A hacker who cracks this one then has the keys to your world. Always sign out of every account after using it too.
Swapping Passwords for paraphrases. We all have favourite songs or sayings... So, instead of using simple words as protection you could use an acronym of your song with the initial of the site you are creating a password for. For example, if your fave song is “Twist and Shout” by the Beatles - your acronym could be “tasbtb” then add the first initial of the site (in this instance, we’ll use face book and a “set’ number algorithm (let’s say **1) - your password for facebook would then become tasbtbf**1. Trust me, it’s harder to articulate this method than to actually implement it!
And it’s not just your home computer or laptop that’s at risk either - keep your smartphone safe ! When you take a picture with your smartphone, potentially, anyone with access to your pics (on facebook for example) can tell where your photos where taken and when - this is all thanks to GPS technology being embedded onto your phone. This means that criminals could have access to where you live, work and also where (and when) you are on holiday. To limit the access that strangers may have to your information, the next time you logon to facebook, before checking out what everyone else had for breakfast/lunch/dinner (yes those pics of what people are about to eat are annoying), why not take a moment to review your own privacy settings. Who can see your posts? Are they set for viewing by friends only, friends of friends (ask yourself if you really know EVERYONE you are friends with, let alone everyone they are acquainted with too). Interestingly, according to a recent study, the average teen has never even met 25% of their social media friends - so it is vital that the message of importance about their own online security is paramount. If you are happy with your privacy settings but still uncomfortable about everyone knowing where and when you are in certain places (again, easily identifiable by your photo uploads), then you can simply turn off the embedded geotagging feature on your phone. Here’s how you can do it:

In the wrong hands, your device is capable of revealing just about every aspect of your life (both personally and professionally - including the images of you in the dodgy jumper your Aunt Vera knitted you for Christmas). It goes without saying that the first step is to ensure that your device has a screen lock. A good first defence but, competent hackers will undoubtably find a way in, somehow. Thank goodness for the rise of fingerprint technologies... To ensure that your data (and let’s face it, your life) is not visible, I would really recommend installing a sufficient ‘Wipe App” which can erase the content of your device remotely if required. Yes, an extreme measure, but a calming reassurance if the worst should happen. I
t is safe to say that 2018 was a somewhat peculiar year with some extreme peaks and troughs in the property market. Nervousness about what happens after the ‘B’ word has played a part in some peoples decisions to delay a move, but by contrast, it has also encouraged many others to dive right in and take advantage of lower house prices. Traditionally, the busy winter/spring market is always the busiest time of year for buying and selling houses. And, with the big political debate finally drawing to a conclusion, all indications are that spring 2019 will not differ from other years. It seems that regardless of whether as a nation we leave Europe with a deal, without a deal or not at all, confidence is still there with buyers and sellers alike taking stock, planning ahead, and moving anyway. Yes, it is true that prices have dropped, but remember if you are moving up value wise, this means the property you are purchasing has dropped more, therefore it makes sense move. Another positive to come out of the downturn is that it enables some of the younger first time buyers to establish themselves onto the property ladder backed by the help to buy and higher loan to value mortgages. This has been a topic of conversation for many years, with parents wanting their children to invest in something that will offer the best return for the future. Having contemplated the option of continuing to wait and watch prices reduce further, is a question I’ve recently
been asked... My view is that when the market gains confidence it happens quickly, the media report it and subsequently vendors then have less flexibility, the wheel of the cycle turns quickly. React now and prosper, delay and the buyers power can be taken away very quickly. As an area, the Thames Valley has always been resilient to any changes in market prices, with the property market regaining confidence quickly and recovering sooner than most other parts of the country from any downturn that has interrupted an upward trend. I have been doing this job for nearly 40 years and in my experience, the past year has shown similarities of the ‘housing cycle’ simply coming around again. This year sees the introduction of Cross Rail too... By the end of this year, the new Elizabeth Line will mean that commuters will be able to board a train at Theale and Reading Stations and be in Canary Wharf in just over an hour. This will most certainly have an affect on house prices in the area. I’ll expand on what this might mean for you in the next issue. I personally feel very positive for 2019 but do be prepared for surprises along the way. Get good advice, plan as far in advance as you can and your move will materialise sooner than you thought! 2.Not diversifying The well-known adage of not having all your eggs in one basket is never truer here. Concentrating your investments in one or a small number of investments can mean ‘all or nothing’ returns. Not for the faint-hearted. The idea of diversification is that if one area performs badly then the others you are invested in might do better. (In our language we look for investments that have shown ‘low correlation’ to each other, so if one has fallen the other is less likely to.)
1. Not understanding why you are doing it Frankly, we see some people who haven’t really thought through why they are investing and indeed, given their circumstances, probably shouldn’t be.
3.Not understanding or assessing risk All investments carry some degree of risk. We see clients who have invested in a small number of investments that have ‘taken their fancy’ and are often the
latest trend or technology. Emotional or fashion stock picking will invariably be high risk which may be correlated with high returns, but the opposite is also true. Look at the history and trends of the investments or sectors you are considering investing in as a guide. What can you afford to lose?

4.Trying to time the market ‘Buying low and selling high’ is the investor’s dream. The lucky ones shout about their successes; the not so lucky ones keep quiet, perhaps leading to the false impression that timing the market is possible. Research shows that trying to time the market doesn’t work as well as staying invested. Do your research, pick wisely and widely and stick with your convictions.…or better still, ask for help.

As the tagline goes ‘Everyone deserves a great love story, but for 17-yearold Simon Spier, it’s a little more complicated’. Simon (Nick Robinson) has the perfect life - great friends, supportive parents, a loving sister, nice house, good school. It’s the kind of tightknit middle class suburban life than seems too good to be true. And it is. As Simon puts it, he has one ‘hugeass secret’, he’s gay and is petrified about coming out. He finds comfort in an anonymous student from his high school who comes out online in an email under the pseudonym ‘Blue’. What starts out as a private email friendship soon turns into a penpal crush at risk of being exposed, after he leaves the library computer logged in to his account only for class clown Martin to screenshot the evidence. The blackmail is simple enough, Martin agrees to keep his secret as long as he sets him up on a date with Simon’s best friend,
dearest to him.
Adapted from the book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon tackles the delicate subject of teenage homosexuality with a confidence rarely seen in mainstream teen cinema. Much like The Fault In Our Stars (2014) it has an unusual blend of quick-witted comedy, effortless charm, at times cheesy melodrama, but with just enough rough edges to keep it interesting and watchable. In every classic romcom true love is able to surmount any obstacle. For Simon that obstacle is not just his own sexuality, but the answer to the burning question of Blue’s identity, which that keeps us guessing till the very end of the movie. It’s a simple and very clever hook that keeps you engaged throughout, kind of like a murder mystery but with a happy ending. Nick Robinson, as Simon, is undoubtedly the driving force of the film but the ensemble cast is very assured. My picks for humour are jokester with a heart Martin, played by Logan Millar, Headteacher Mr. Worth (Tony Hale)

and teacher Ms. Albright (Natasha Rothwell). Katherine Langford, who plays Simon’s best friend Leah, delivers the most touching and heartfelt performance, and Jennifer Garner provides the star quality as Nick’s mum, Emily. Love, Simon is a beautifully touching movie that goes through the happiness, tears, and romance of coming out, but most importantly has universal appeal.
It will strike a chord with anyone who struggled through their teens and its central message of inclusion and acceptance make it particularly poignant in today’s world. Released in 2018 to critical acclaim, but with little fanfare, you’ll find this is on all major streaming services and DVD. So, if you’re after something different from the usual romantic fare this Valentine’s Day hunt it down now! 4/5

Every four years in the village of Gavaldon, two children are kidnapped to become students for the magical School for Good and Evil. When two best friends, Sophie and Agatha, start school, things don’t go as they have planned. Sophie is a girl who dreams in shades of pink, wants to be a princess and have a happy ever after, Agatha is the opposite. Agatha lives by a graveyard and only wears black. We follow the two friends through their first year at school and join them in their adventures. I adore this book because when you read the first few pages you are hooked. The reader feels like they are in the magical world and some parts are so funny that they make you laugh out loud. The author has written in the views of Sophie and Agatha for each chapter which makes it easy to follow. This book is the first of a four book series. Book five will be coming out on the 7th of March 2019. I can’t wait! I recommend this book to any 10-16 year olds who want to escape everyday life. If you’re a fan of Harry Potter you’ll love this fantasy series.

With their Thatcham and Swindon sites established and thriving, Tigers have settled well in Theale, bringing with them an inspiring approach to childcare. Tigers Theale Nursery takes children from three months to five years and offers convenience, flexibility and peace-of-mind for parents. Most importantly, Tigers delivers happy, fun-filled days in a stimulating, safe environment for children. As you would expect, the

At the Theale Nursery, Tigers has an online system which enables staff to log a child’s progress throughout the day and for parents to see their child taking part in their daily activities. For quiet times, the sensory ‘Bubble Room’ is a great place for children to escape to and unwind from a busy nursery room, especially the babies and toddlers and those with special needs. Outside, Tigers offers Forest School sessions which offer children regular hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment. Outdoor learning activities include bug hunting, making hot chocolate around a camp fire, playing with logs and playing in lots of
outdoor natural space. Tigers Day Nurseries has established its own Centre of Excellence, too. The Tigers Training Centre provides specialist childcare training for other local nurseries across Berkshire - as well as its own staff. Fancy Rocking Out in 2019? Berkshire’s fastest growing music school is once again running rock sessions, but it’s not just for kids!
The Rock Project Berkshire now has 13 schools in and around the county, including Burghfield, and since extending its offering to grown-ups in the form of an adult “Rock School” back at the beginning of 2017, the popularity has been so great over the past 2 years - they are running the courses again. With their spring course starting at the beginning of January 2019, bookings are now being taken! Harmeet Nandra who runs The Rock Project Berkshire said: “We had been inundated with requests from parents and other adults saying “I wish there was something like this for me’.” “We are very excited to be running the sessions for adults at Bughfield again.” Like the sessions for 7-18 year olds, the adult classes take place at St. Mary’s C of E Primary School in Theale Road, focussing on drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and vocals. The adult sessions, which are aptly called “Encore”, are 90 minutes long and tutored by professional working musicians.

Harmeet added, “Encore is an opportunity for adults to do something for themselves, pick up a new skill or re-invigorate an old hobby that’s been put aside for too long. The Rock Project Berkshire also has Encore sessions at its Windsor, Woodley, Tilehurst, Wokingham, Maidenhead, Sandhurst and Fleet schools. A number of bands have developed from a number of these schools.
