LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Immaculate Family, Each year, Traditions offers us a meaningful opportunity to pause and reflect on the people, places and moments that define Immaculate High School. This year’s theme–Faces, Spaces and Traditions–beautifully captures the heart of who we are as a school community. The faces of Immaculate are the students, faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends who bring our mission to life each day. Their stories remind us that an Immaculate education is deeply personal and is shaped by faith, connection and a shared commitment to excellence. The spaces of Immaculate are more than classrooms, fields, stages and hallways. They are where students discover their gifts, form lifelong friendships, deepen their faith and prepare for the future. They are the settings for growth and connection. And our traditions are the threads that connect generations of Mustangs. From the moments of prayer and celebration to the milestones, memories and shared experiences that mark each school year, these traditions continue to strengthen the spirit of Immaculate and remind us of the legacy we are privileged to carry forward. As we reflect on Immaculate’s continued momentum, I am deeply grateful to our faculty, staff, students, families, alumni and supporters who make this growth possible. Because of this shared commitment to our 60-year tradition as a values-based, student-centered Catholic collegepreparatory school, Immaculate continues to earn outstanding recognition, including an A+ Niche rating in 2026, a place among the top 2.5% of high schools nationwide, the #3 ranking among Catholic high schools in Connecticut, the #1 Catholic Co-Ed High School ranking in the state and recognition as the #12 Best High School for Athletes among 249 Connecticut schools. With gratitude,

Wendy M. Neil Head of School TRADITIONS 2026

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL

Soon we will kick off the 18-month review for our 10-year accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)–and boy are we ready. When the NEASC folks enter our school they are going to meet our thriving student body. They are going to visit with our committed, engaged teachers. They will interview our outstanding leadership team. They will see our Niche A+ rating and top Catholic school ranking. They will see on side by side analysis that we rank within the top 10 public high schools in Connecticut. Our college placement is exceeding almost all neighboring towns for acceptances, fields of study and financial aid. They will see our lowest in the state ratio of counselors to students guiding our students. They will see our community share Mass, pray for those we have lost and support those in need. Immaculate has a shine to it that's beyond the spotless hallways. Our theater productions are award winning. Our athletics program continues to draw praise and titles. An eye-catching Business Innovation Center opened last fall and is leading to new curriculum and clubs for our students. Plus, we have plans to build upon our best in class Certified Nursing Assistant Program. Thank you donors, parents, students, Board members, faculty, Diocesan clergy and all the community leaders. We are better than ever spiritually, financially and physically. Come visit if you can. We would love to see you!

The Gerwien Foundation In 2022 the Robert E. Gerwien Foundation was launched. Mr. Gerwien served as teacher, coach and principal for many years and remains a beloved presence to so many of us. By 2023 the first distributions went to worthy outstanding young Immaculate students. As of today "the REG," as we affectionately refer to it, has over $1 million across 13 named scholarships and will distribute almost $50 thousand in aid to our students this year. The REG's success is critical for Immaculate's long term viability. Bringing down the cost of education for all our students is our priority. The REG is a separate 501(c)3. While independent of the school, its sole purpose is to promote support for Immaculate. The chairperson of REG must always be a member of the school's Board of Directors. The REG funds are held in an account at Raymond James and follow a conventional investment policy that allocates a portion of the funds to globally recognized low cost large equity and bond indexes.

Each year school leaders review each scholarship and seek out applicants and candidates who fulfill the donors’ intent of reaching those in need and of accomplishment. We hope interested parties will take a look at the available scholarships immaculatehs.org/ reg as we seek help to grow these or add new scholarships each year. The stories behind these named scholarships and their sponsors are a constant source of inspiration. From August 2025 to August 2026 the assets grew from $550 thousand to the current more than $1 million through donations and investment returns. We are very humbled and appreciative of all those generous contributors.

A LIFETIME OF MUSTANG PRIDE: Nelson Mingachos ’89 Received Immaculate’s Lifetime Achievement Award Nelson Mingachos grew up in Danbury in the shadow of Immaculate High School. “As a little boy, I’d stand in our backyard and hear the roar of the football games and the announcer echoing through the speakers,” Mingachos, Immaculate’s athletic director, remembered. “That sound made my heart race. I wanted to be part of it someday.” He did become part of it. During his days trudging through “the swamp” with his friends to get to football games at Immaculate, Mingachos signed up for Mustang Basketball Camp. That was 42 years ago–and he’s never left. In high school, Mingachos entered Immaculate and was encouraged to be a soccer player by his father, but one day while practicing on the track, Coach Slavinsky asked him to try kicking off a football tee. “I had never kicked a football in my life. I put the ball on the tee completely wrong—flat—which made all the coaches laugh,” Mingachos joked. “But I started kicking and within ten minutes he said, ‘Get him up in the locker room and get him a uniform. He’s kicking Friday night.’” The rest, as they say, is Immaculate history. As a multi-sport athlete in the Class of 1989, Mingachos excelled in football and basketball, helped lead the historic 1986 WCC and State Championship football team to a perfect 12-0 season and was inducted into the Immaculate Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. After Immaculate, Mingachos earned a full scholarship to Central Connecticut State University, where he was the football team’s starting kicker and earned All-League honors in 1993 and 1994. He was selected to attend NFL scout camp in Tampa, Florida, in 1994, and the Connecticut Post later named him to its “All Time Best of the Best Football Team.”

8

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL

FACES Mingachos began coaching at Immaculate in 2002 and was appointed Athletic Director in 2019 after serving as acting director. He led the Girls Soccer Team from 2004 to 2021, guiding the program to four SWC Championship titles, two SWC finals appearances and ten CIAC Class S State Championship wins. He was named SWC Soccer Coach of the Year eight times and earned additional honors from the Danbury NewsTimes, Connecticut High School Coaches Association, NCSAA and Connecticut Sports Writer Alliance. Under his leadership, five soccer players became All-Americans and 47 earned CT All-State recognition. As head basketball coach, Mingachos also led Immaculate to an SWC Championship, two Class S State Championships and one Division II State Championship, with 13 student-athletes named All-State players.

At this year’s Blue & White Gala, Nelson O. Mingachos ’89 was honored with Immaculate High School’s Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his dedication to Catholic education, Immaculate athletics and generations of Mustang student-athletes. In a fitting tribute, Immaculate’s state-of-the-art turf field in Mustang Valley was also officially renamed the Nelson O. Mingachos Field. “When I walk out and see that sign for the first time, I won’t be thinking about my name. I’ll be thinking about my father,” Mingachos told the Immaculate community during his acceptance speech.

COMMUNITY SERVICE FR. PHAN ANNIVERSARY Our Chaplain, Fr. Philip Phan celebrated the tenth anniversary of his ordination on June 25. His joy in his vocation and the great spiritual care he takes of every member of the Immaculate community is a life giving ministry. Ad multos annos!

STUFF THE VAN Thanks to the efforts of our student volunteers and alumni Paul Hiro, Pat O’Neill and Emil Curran from the Class of 1968, we were able to deliver a meaningful collection of non-perishable goods to the Jericho Partnership Food Bank.

SUPPORTING MOMS AND BABIES The ASL Club’s Giving from the Heart drive collected a beautiful array of baby items for Hopeline Pregnancy Resource Center.

STUDENTS ATTEND CT MARCH FOR LIFE Our March for Life Club boarded a bus bound for Hartford, joining thousands at the Connecticut March for Life rally in a powerful witness to the dignity of life.

DANIEL BUCKLEY RETIRES

All three of their children attended, making Immaculate life a family affair. Dan and Pat helped build sets for the plays and floats for homecoming, attended soccer games, track meets and wrestling matches as well as fine arts shows and events.

He says some have questioned his career path – “Why not do something more lucrative?” and “How can you spend all day working with your wife?” To the former he says he has loved the students and the teaching. To the latter, he says, “Working with Pat was wonderful.” And that, while they are all very nice people, he found it disconcerting to look through the door of her classroom and see someone else at her desk after she retired. “I miss her being here.”

About the teaching he says, “Some frighteningly amazing students come through this school.” Teaching them theology has been a gift. The students come up with some serious and challenging questions. Answering them is a learning experience as well as a teaching moment in faith. “I’m really going to miss the students.”

Dan made the decision to retire only about a month before the end of the school year after much prayer and reflection. He says he knows it is time to retire but has no idea what comes next – except he does know there will be more time with his increasing family of grandchildren and of course Pat!

We bid good-bye to retiring teacher Daniel Buckley who is leaving us after teaching here for twenty years, preceded by twenty-five years at Kennedy Catholic Preparatory School in Somers, New York. Dan arrived at Immaculate three years after his wife Pat did. They had side by side classrooms on the first floor for many years. Pat retired a few years ago.

NEW SPACES, CUTTING-EDGE

OPPORTUNITIES

At Immaculate High School, learning spaces are designed to do more than support instruction. They are created to inspire collaboration, creativity and connection. This year, Immaculate celebrated the opening of two dynamic new spaces–the Business Innovation Center and the eSports Lab–each reflecting the school’s commitment to preparing students for the future while strengthening the sense of community that defines campus life. The Business Innovation Center officially opened on October 23, 2025 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that brought together students, faculty, 22

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL

alumni, community partners and Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves. The state-of-the-art space was designed to mirror the professional environments students will one day enter, offering collaborative workstations, presentation technology, flexible project areas and a stock market trading simulator. It now serves as a home for hands-on business education, entrepreneurship and leadership development. The center was made possible through the support and vision of alumni Chris Palmer ’68, a former NFL coach, and Rob O’Neill ’91, chief financial officer of the global pharmaceutical company Viatris. Both saw the opportunity to create a space where students could build real-world skills while remaining grounded in the values of an Immaculate education.

“The business world is increasingly grappling with complex ethical dilemmas, particularly around the use of Artificial Intelligence,” O’Neill said. “Addressing these challenges requires more than technical expertise–it demands a foundation rooted in ethics, empathy and service. Immaculate’s Business Innovation Center is uniquely positioned to prepare students for this reality.”

SPACES Palmer said the center is another example of what sets Immaculate apart. “If you come for a visit and have any inkling for doing something in business, this center is going to jump out at you,” he said. “I think it’s going to take off–and it’s fun!” Just down the hall, Immaculate also opened its new eSports Lab, giving the reigning state champion Mario Kart team a dedicated space to practice, compete and continue building team spirit. With individual gaming stations, LED lighting, ergonomic seating and a professional-grade setup, the lab reflects the growing role of eSports in high school and college athletics.

“The room was designed with professional eSports set-ups in mind, and it worked out perfectly to look just as good as the pros, My favorite part is the LED lights from floor to ceiling — they just look so cool.” - Ryan Beverly

For students, the new lab has quickly become more than a gaming space. It is a place where teamwork, strategy and shared enthusiasm come together. Co-Captain Ryan Beverly ’26 of Bethel said he was “beyond surprised” when he learned the team would receive its own room

The Mustangs captured the Mario Kart State Championship for the third straight year in a row, and Coach David Quesnell said the new lab has given the team a space that matches its growing success. “The students love having their own room, and the chairs make it feel like a real eSports setup they see their favorite YouTubers using,” Quesnell said. “Now they have a dedicated space — just like the volleyball team has a court and the football team has a field.” Together, the Business Innovation Center and eSports Lab show how Immaculate continues to create spaces that meet students where their interests, talents and futures are taking them. Whether they are pitching ideas, studying markets, competing as a team or exploring new career paths, students now have even more opportunities to innovate, lead and belong. TRADITIONS 2026

SPACE LIFT

This year, several “spacelifts” across campus are helping refresh and strengthen the places where Immaculate students learn, gather and grow. These improvements reflect our continued investment in a school environment that is welcoming and worthy of the community it serves.

AFTER

BEFORE

The entrance to our beautiful school has gotten a facelift! We’re excited to report that our driveway was repaved over the summer of 2026. We are grateful to supporters of our Blue & White Gala which helped make this happen. The Legacy Walkway continues to grow with the addition of new senior bricks, creating a lasting tribute to the students who have helped shape Immaculate’s story. Each brick serves as a permanent reminder that every graduating class leaves its mark on our school community.

Restrooms across campus received important updates, including new fixtures and fresh paint, helping create cleaner, brighter and more welcoming spaces for students and guests.

New CNA Clinical Room Supports Hands-On Learning Immaculate’s Certified Nursing Assistant Clinical Room has been refreshed and expanded to give students an even more realistic setting for hands-on medical training. With fresh paint, new mannequins and a larger space designed to feel more like a hospital environment, the room helps students practice essential patient-care skills with confidence. Through Immaculate’s innovative CNA Program, Mustangs gain clinical experience both on campus and through rotations at area nursing facilities, with the opportunity to take the Prometric Certification Test on site to become Certified Nursing Assistants in Connecticut.

SPACES HÜGELKULTUR GARDEN

GRAPHICS LAB

Immaculate students brought sustainability to life by building a Hügelkultur garden on campus. This gardening method layers wood, branches, cardboard and other organic materials beneath the soil to create raised beds that naturally retain water, enrich the soil and support longterm growth.

The Graphics Lab received a major technology upgrade with 22 new student iMacs and one teacher iMac, each featuring a 24-inch Retina 4.5K display and Apple’s latest M4 chip. The new computers allow students to work more efficiently in Adobe Creative Cloud programs including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, giving them professional-level tools both in the lab and through access on their school-issued devices.

COMING SOON Maker Space Immaculate is creating its own maker space, a place where students learn through collaboration, problem solving, hands-on experimentation and creativity.

LUXEDO PROJECTION SYSTEM

Thanks to the generosity of Chris and Donna Palmer ’68 & ’67, Immaculate has received a state-of-the-art Luxedo projection system for the Bobby Plumb Gymnasium. This innovative technology will transform the space, creating new possibilities for athletics, school events, faith experiences such as the Stations of the Cross and hands-on academic projects in science, forensics and engineering. Bringing this vision to life also required critical electrical and technology installation upgrades, made possible through the generous contributions and support of Paul Nunes P’29 (Amp Electric), Michael Anstett P’29 and Kevin Crabbe P’29. We are deeply grateful to these members of the Immaculate community for helping make this exciting addition possible and for investing in new ways for our students to learn, compete, worship and gather.

Restrooms Mustang Valley will soon boast fully-equipped permanent restroom facilities. Softball Shed The Softball Team will have its own shed/locker room

near the batting cages in time for this year’s season.

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL

NS Traditions are more than

events on a calendar. They are the moments that become memories, the rituals that build belonging and the shared experiences that connect

generations of Mustangs. In this section, we celebrate the traditions that keep Immaculate’s spirit strong.

TRADITIONS 2026

27

TRADITIONS ROOTED IN FAITH Some of Immaculate’s newest traditions are rooted in its oldest foundation: faith. The Immaculate High School community gathered for one of the most meaningful traditions of the school year: the annual Mass for Mothers, celebrated in honor of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This year’s celebration was made especially memorable by the presence of Bishop Frank J. Caggiano, who presided over the Mass and delivered a heartfelt homily reflecting on Mary’s courage, trust in God and the love of mother figures.

“Anyone who is a mother, your mother and mine, deserve our honor and respect…not simply because they bore us into the world but because they care for us, they protect us, they feed us, they guide us, they challenge us, they discipline us, they put up with you– with me. All because of love,” Bishop Caggiano told students.

Mothers from across the Immaculate community were welcomed as honored guests and received a commemorative flower at the conclusion of the liturgy. Bishop Caggiano also reminded students that their education at Immaculate is meant to prepare them not only for success, but for lives rooted in faith, hope and love. “You are learning here not just the truths that will make you successful and to have a good career but to learn the things that are eternal,” he said. It was fathers’ turn to be recognized and celebrated a few months later during a special Mass celebrating the Feast of St. Joseph. The morning brought families together in faith and fellowship, honoring the important role fathers and father figures play in guiding, supporting and encouraging their children. 28

IMMACULATE HIGH SCHOOL

In addition to monthly Masses, Immaculate’s annual Mass of Remembrance provides an opportunity for the community to gather to honor and pray for all of our beloved Immaculate alumni who have gone before us. This year, Father Peter Cipriani, pastor of St. Rose of Lima, shared a beautiful reminder that we are each blessed with one life—and that we should not only live it fully, but also cherish and love everyone who is part of it. Father Cipriani, from Saint Rose of Lima parish, was one of several diocesian priests who visited Immaculate this year to lead Mass and then join students of their respective parochial schools, along with members of our choir, for lunch. Father Michael Dunn ’82 from Saint Gregory the Great Parish celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany with us before starting at his new parish in Greenwich.

TRADITIONS

Kairos

Immaculate students participated in the Kairos retreat at the Holy Family Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford, Connecticut, joining in a meaningful three-day experience centered on deepening relationships with themselves, each other and God. Kairos, which means “God’s time,” offered students the opportunity to step away from daily routines and reflect on their faith. Immaculate is grateful to Fairfield Prep for hosting our students as they took part in this powerful retreat tradition. We look forward to offering our own Kairos retreat next year.

We also blessed our student-athletes before each season with special Masses in Immaculate’s Chapel. The services wished all of our athletes a safe and successful season. Outside of the Chapel and the Bobby Plumb Gymnasium where our schoolwide Masses are held, Immaculate’s community gathers for seasonal prayer services held near our beloved Mary statue near the entrance to campus. “Prayers on the Hill” take place before we return back to school in September. “These Masses and prayer experiences help our students understand that faith is not something separate from their daily lives at Immaculate–it is woven into who we are as a community,” said Chaplain Father Philip Phan.

“Whether we are celebrating Mass with mothers and fathers, gathering with our studentathletes or praying together outside during Prayers on the Hill, these moments invite our students to pause, reflect and recognize God’s presence in their lives and in one another.” School Chaplain Father Philip Phan blesses the students’ sports equipment.

THEOLOGY BOWL Our Theology Bowl scholars claimed the Diocesan Theology Bowl Championship held at Immaculate High School, with Max Fleming ‘27 and Robert Pattison ‘27 winning first prize and Shayleigh Barrett ’28 and Sophia Da Silva ‘26 taking third.

ALUMNI HAPPENINGS CALLED TO SERVE: THE CLASS OF 1971 CONTINUES TO GIVE BACK

Immaculate gave the Class of 1971 more than an education. It instilled a lifelong commitment to serving others. “Our generation was raised to believe that if a community helps shape your life, you have a responsibility to help shape its future,” said Jan Maria Jagush ‘71.

Jagush and many of her classmates have built impressive records of public service in the Danbury area and say it all started at Immaculate. “We learned early that leadership and compassion go hand in hand–and that lesson stayed with us long after graduation,” Jagush said. “As we’ve gotten older, many of us realized success means more than personal achievement. It also means leaving your community stronger than you found it.” From volunteerism to education to mentoring or helping neighbors behind the scenes, here are some of the ways Immaculate’s Class of 1971 are making a difference.

Carl Bailey and his wife have made a profound impact on the greater Danbury community through the founding of the Grassroots Academy, a program dedicated to serving at-risk students between the ages of eight and 22.

Jan Maria Jagush, a retired teacher of 35 years, has also spent nearly four decades with Scalzo Real Estate and owns JMJ Connecticut Property Management. She has also worked on community projects like beautification, cultural recognition and downtown revitalization.

Bill McAllister has devoted his life to the community through numerous area fire departments, holding leadership roles that included lieutenant, captain, training officer, deputy chief, assistant chief and chief, also serving for many years as Deputy Fire Coordinator for Litchfield County.

Barry Rickert had a long career as a Danbury firefighter, was elected as a Council-atLarge representative for the Danbury City Council and was appointed to the Danbury Zoning Board of Appeals.

Emile Buzaid has dedicated much of his life to public service and community involvement in Danbury, serving for 14 years on the Danbury Common Council.

Gene Eriquez served on the Danbury Common Council, and later went on to serve as mayor of Danbury for 12 years, helping guide the city through a period of growth.

John Gogliettino’s community involvement includes 30 years of service on the Democratic Town Committee, including 10 years as treasurer, as well as eight years on the Environmental Impact Commission.

Honoring Legends: The Class of 1970 Rallies for a Lasting Legacy When the Class of 1970 lost two iconic members, Michael “Mickey” Pascuzzi ‘70 and John Mulvihill ‘70, their classmates rallied to honor their immense Mustang pride. Mickey served as Immaculate’s very first athletic trainer, while John was a four-year basketball standout and later chair of the Danbury Old Timers Athletic Association. For decades, our Athletic Department relied on Mickey’s original golf cart to support student-athletes. When it was finally retired, the Class of 1970 launched a campaign to fund a brand40

strong sense of family and foundation of Catholic faith. Inspired by the words of St. Paul– “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."–the scholarship will recognize students who demonstrate the dedication, perseverance, character and faith that Max embodied. Contributions may be made through Immaculate’s scholarship page at: immaculatehs.org/support-ihs/ scholarships.

To honor Max’s life and carry his legacy forward, the Max Fehring Memorial Scholarship has been established in his loving memory. Max cherished his time at Immaculate, where he embraced the school’s

new replacement in their memory. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, the goal was met and the new cart is officially on campus! To complete this tribute, Michael’s brother, Louis Pascuzzi of Economy Signs, generously donated the custom memorial lettering. We extend our deepest gratitude to Louis and everyone who contributed, ensuring Mickey and John’s legacies remain on our fields for years to come.
