The Mission of the International Museum of Art & Science is to create an environment that inspires, educates, and entertains the public through the arts and sciences. WELCOME! On behalf of the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) Board of Trustees, we’d like to welcome the many new members that joined the IMAS during our 50th anniversary year! It has been a very exciting time for the museum because it offers an opportunity to reflect upon 50 years of exhibits, educational programs and cultural events that continue to inspire a passion for learning in our community. It give us an opportunity to appreciate the history of the museum, the key organizations that helped start the museum, the generous individuals who have continually assisted in the growth of our museum, the community within which we have grown, and the city which has assisted us in reaching our current position. We now engage over 70,000 visitors annually, of which about 30,000 are school-children! IMAS remains steadfastly committed to offering engaging art and science exhibits that nurture the intellectual, creative life of our community. In support of the museum’s mission to create environments that inspire, educate and entertain the public through the arts and sciences, we are proud to announce that, thanks to many generous donations and fundraising campaigns, the museum is preparing to build a 3D cinema in the Children’s Discovery Pavilion where museum visitors and school groups will be able to enjoy immersive films on STEAM topics that evolve around natural history, space science technology, culture, engineering and math. At this time, we are also pleased to be presenting The Fifth Mexican Shinzaburo Takeda Biennial of Printmaking on view now at the IMAS from December 2, 2017 to February 18, 2018. This outstanding exhibit supports our international arts program and is made possible thanks to the gracious sponsorship of Kirk and Jeri Clark, Clark Chevrolet and Clark Knapp Honda. As we enter 2018, I’d like to extend a note of warm thanks and gratitude to our outgoing Board of Trustees Vice Chair, Carlos Melguizo who served on the IMAS board for 6 consecutive years. His creative passion and love the for our community continues to have a significant positive impact on the quality of programs being presented at the IMAS. The Collage Gala has forever been elevated to a new artistic experience! Also, I’d like to thank our fearless and most generous outgoing Board Chair, Laura Warren Ogletree for her constant support and vitality towards continually expanding our service to the community. Laura is always giving of her time and talent generously, and we could not have wished for a more nurturing and visionary leader. Last month, in the spirit of rotation, the Board of Trustees elected Jeri Clark as Board Chair; Eryn Reddell Wingert as Vice Chair; Beth Brown as Secretary; Ernesto Sepulveda as Treasurer as well as new trustees: Dr. Katherine McAllen, Juan Garcia and Julia Collins. Our Board and staff are committed to serving our community and we look forward to a great new year ahead. On behalf of the entire IMAS personnel, we look forward to seeing you at the museum. We wish everyone a happy holiday and joyous new year ahead. Sincerely, Serena Pandos, MAAA Interim President

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS The Fifth Mexican Shinzaburo Takeda Biennial December 2, 2017 - February 18, 2018 Forty-eight works from all over Mexico were selected from 748 entries, spreading from Baja California to Yucatan. Artists from 26 Mexican states submitted work including the relief print by Oaxacan artist Irving Herrera, who won the Kirk and Jeri Clark Award. This year’s guest country is China, represented by 10 works of woodcut, etching and serigraph. The jury this year consisted of the writer Andrés de Luna, fine artists Ismael Guardado, Maximino Xavier and Luis Hampshire, curator Benjamín Martínez and Shinzaburo Takeda. The exhibition opened in Oaxaca in September 2017 and will travel to Veracruz, Mexico City, Durango, Yucatan and to IMAS in McAllen.

IMAS is pleased to host The Fifth Mexican Shinzaburo Takeda Biennial of Printmaking, which will be the sole North American venue. Printmaking, starting with 5th-century Chinese wood block prints used on textile, has always been an exacting art. Requiring a steady hand, minute attention to detail, and a great deal of patience to follow the steps of carving or etching, printmakers create several plates if there are multiple colors and must carefully align the paper with a block or plate in the press. This fifth exhibition of The Shinzaburo Takeda Biennial of Printmaking presents a wide survey of printmaking across Mexico and a fascinating comparison with current trends in China.

4

The Biennial was created in 2008 by a group of Oaxacan artists headed by Japanese printmaker Maestro Shinzaburo Takeda as a way to promote contemporary printmaking using traditional techniques. The National Shinzaburo Takeda Printmaking Biennial is an initiative of Takedart A.C. and is made possible thanks to the support of the Secretary of Culture and Arts of Oaxaca (SECULTA) and the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca. The exhibition at IMAS is made possible through the generosity of Kirk and Jeri Clark, Clark Chevrolet and Clark Knapp Honda. On Saturday December 16, Dr. Riccardo Pizzinato will be giving a lecture, "A Closer Look at Mexican Prints" at 3:00 p.m., free for IMAS Member and included in General Admission.

Love of Life and Landscape: The Art of Edward E. Nichols OPENING RECEPTION/ EXHIBITION/

AUGUST 26, 2017 / 3PM-5PM

AUGUST 26, 2017 - JANUARY 7, 2018

Edward Edson Nichols was a professor of art at the University of Texas Pan American (now UTRGV) for 33 years, retiring from teaching in 1999. Nichols, who passed away in 2016, loved south Texas, and his art work celebrates the beautiful landscapes and traditions of the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico. As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the International Museum of Art & Science, the exhibition represents a retrospective of the broad range of his art, from the landscapes of the citrus groves around his studio, to the Mexican festivals and folk art he so admired. *Included in the price of General Admission. Free for IMAS Members. International Museum of Art & Science 1900 Nolana Avenue, McAllen, TX 78504 (956) 681-2800 www.theimasonline.org

Over 100 Pieces of Mexican Folk Art

FEATURING

Warmbold Collection

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF ART & SCIENCE

The International Museum of Art &1900 Science hasMcALLEN, received a gift of 113| WWW.THEIMASONLINE.ORG objects of NOLANA AVE, TX 78504 | 956.681.2800 Mexican folk art from Carolyn Warmbold, a long-time resident of San Antonio, who now lives in Florida. Mrs. Warmbold first donated to IMAS in 1990 after the death of her husband Ted. He and Carolyn became prominent collectors of Mexican and Central American folk art after living in San Antonio where Ted, former editor of the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, was an editor for the San Antonio Light. Starting in the early 1980s and up until his death, Ted would travel to Mexico and Central America purchasing folk art directly from artists. In 1990, at the bequest of the Estate of Ted Warmbold, the majority of his collection was divided between the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles and IMAS. Of the 411 pieces of folk art given to IMAS were Mexican masks, textiles, costume pieces, sculptures, ceramics and figurines. In late 2016, Carolyn Warmbold proposed a second gift to IMAS as she was preparing for retirement. The 113 items newly acquired by IMAS complement the previous donation, filling gaps in the collection and rounding out areas by major Mexican folk artists such as the Oaxcan ceramicists in the Aguilar family and the wood carver Manual Jimenez along with papier-mâché works by David Linares of Mexico City.

David Linares, Baby Alibrije (Chameleon), ca. 1987, papier-mâché. Gift of Carolyn Warmbold.

The objects most recently donated by Carolyn Warmbold include textiles, ceramics, figurine sculptures, masks and some religious objects. As part of the process of documenting incoming works to the permanent collection, objects are cataloged and photographed and assigned a permanent location in the vault. The IMAS folk art collection, now reaching over 1,000 objects, has from its founding been one of the museum’s strongest assets and continues to grow.

VOLUNTEERING AT IMAS Christmas in the Great Outdoors Every year the IMAS Guild hosts the annual Christmas Tree Forest contest to raise awareness of local organizations and bring extra cheer to the holiday season. Gracie Cobo, Guild President, states the contest is “a long-standing tradition of the Museum since the mid-70s.” There is no charge to enter. The competition features five categories: Kindergarten-2nd; 3rd-5th; 6th-8th; 9th-12th; and Families/Organizations. Three winners were selected from each category. First place received $150, Second $100 and Third $75. This year, twenty-two 6-foot artificial trees were set up in record time. This was made possible by the help of two volunteer groups from companies in the valley. Seven employees from South Texas Electric Cooperative, Inc. in Edinburg, and five employees from Kohl’s in Mission took a morning off from their busy schedules to arrange the trees and string the lights. Visit the extravagant forest, themed Christmas in the Great Outdoors, until January 4, 2018. It is free for IMAS Members and included in the cost of General Admission. For more information or to become an IMAS Guild Member contact Guild President Gracie Cobo at gcobo@sbcglobal.net.

UTRGV Interns at IMAS This fall semester 10 interns from Museum Studies courses at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg gave their time and skill to several departments at IMAS. From Curatorial to Education, these interns eagerly showed up week after week to assist with several ongoing projects, special events and off-site outreaches. Over 750 internship hours were completed from September to early December. Thank you UTRGV for your service and commitment to promoting our mission!
