ear Hereford Enthusiasts,
As we turn the corner from summer to fall, we all get excited about the calves we raised this year and start preparing for next year. Now is the time to evaluate your mating choices and engaging the tremendous knowledge base and exceptional Hereford breeders within this state. I would encourage you to attend the fall tour as well as attending the many top-quality sales that occur in our state. In addition, we have a highly engaged field representative, John Meents, with the American Hereford Association. Reach out to John or one of the other many members of the association to answer your questions or direct you toward your herd improvement. They are there to serve and help your herd and the Hereford breed to improve and flourish within the cattle industry. I would also like to point out that the IHA board has postponed the new fall sale format until fall of 2021. There were many factors that were considered when making that difficult decision, but in the end, it is about making sure the members of the IHA have access to a quality sale. We will move forward with this tremendous idea for 2021. Look for more information to be delivered in the coming months. Have a safe harvest and weaning season!

This sale has been a very successful event for producers the past decade, and I encourage you to take advantage of placing your feeders in a sale with proven success. ALL ROADS LEAD TO KANSAS CITY FOR THE 2020 VITAFERM JUNIOR NATIONAL HEREFORD EXPO Facing a venue cancellation and new healthy initiatives, Team Hereford pushed through COVID-19 trials which led the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) to “Come Home to Hereford” in Kansas City, Mo. The JNHE changed to a five-day event held July 10-15 and was hosted by the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) and the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). “The road leading to Kansas City did take some twists and turns, but the smiles and fist bumps after an awesome week made coming home to Hereford worth all of the extra efforts it took to get there,” says Amy Cowan, AHA director of youth activities and foundation. This year’s JNHE showcased the talents of NJHA members in the showring and through online virtual contests. The event also debuted the future professionals contest, where juniors connected with collegiate and industry professionals by applying and interviewing for a career in agriculture. The livestock show included bred-and-owned females, cow-calf pairs, steers, bred-and-owned bulls and owned females. A total of 1,082 entries from juniors across the U.S. and Canada were exhibited at this year’s exposition. “I think Judge Shike said it best — seeing our Hereford youth and families back home in Kansas City allowed all of us to return to some type of our normal,” says Bailey Clanton, national shows coordinator and youth activities assistant. “The late-night Zoom meetings and sleepless nights were worth every moment spent in Kansas City doing what we love. This show brought hope to the current uncertainties and proved the Hereford family is stronger than ever.” In accordance with social distancing guidelines established with the Kansas City Health Department and American Royal Complex, the opening and awards ceremonies were broadcasted virtually to limit major gatherings. Graduating seniors were also given a special recognition to celebrate their milestone achievement. “I couldn’t be more excited with how it all came together amidst a lot of unknowns and scary times facing our nation,” Cowan says. “What these kids and their families needed was some normalcy and I am so glad we could provide that for them through the Junior National Hereford Expo.” Cowan expresses her appreciation for everyone’s willingness to participate despite changing venues, wearing masks and social distancing. “Even with nationwide mandates in place, we have never felt more like a Hereford family than we did this year,” she says. “Congratulations, Team Hereford, I am proud of everyone that played a part in coming home to Kansas City.”
BARBER, EFFLING WIN JUNIOR NATIONAL HEREFORD EXPO STEER SHOW Aidyn Barber, Channing, Texas, showed the grand champion steer and Chesney Effling, Highmore, S.D., exhibited the reserve grand champion steer, July 14, at the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Kansas City, Mo. The steer show was sponsored by Upstream Ranch, Taylor, Neb. Judge Drew Perez, Canyon, Texas, sorted 62 steers to find the champion. Barber’s grand champion steer, RGR ML Mar2 40G, weighed in at 1,226 pounds for a WDA of 2.7. He was sired by SULL TCC Mr Roy Who 5973C ET and bred by Riley Rhodes, Carlinville, Ill.

Effling’s reserve grand champion steer and champion bred-and-owned steer, CHEZ Russel 9668G ET, weighed in at 1,349 pounds for a WDA of 2.7 and was sired by K Rustic 711 ET. Reserve champion bred-and-owned steer went to Cally Miller with MG Hank 5115 13G. Her steer weighed in at 1,175 pounds for a WDA of 2.3 and was sired by PLCC 3001 Domino 5115C. 4

NEW NJHA BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED IN THE MAROON JACKET Illinois Juniors Elected to National Junior Hereford Association Leadership Roles Four National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members were elected to the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board of directors at the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 1015 in Kansas City, Mo. JW Cox, Flemingsburg, Ky.; Lauren McMillan, Tiskilwa, Ill.; Ralston Ripp, Kearney, Neb.; and Libby Ruston, Waverly, Tenn., were all welcomed into their maroon jackets as new NJHA directors during the JNHE awards The NJHA Board of Directors for 2020-2021. ceremony on July 14. Two delegates from each state junior Hereford association voted for the individuals they wanted to represent the membership. The NJHA board is comprised of 12 individuals who serve three-year terms and govern the 3,500-member organization. The 2020-21 officer team includes chairman Montana Lawrence, Princeton, Minn.; vice-chairman Abby Spindle, Moriarty, N.M.; communications chair Bailey Morrell, Willows, Calif.; leadership chair Luke Daniels, Dalhart, Texas; fundraising chair Noah Benedict, Dewey, Ill.; and membership chair Wyatt Lawrence, Princeton, Minn. Also serving as directors are Brooklyn Adam, Lathrop, Mo. and Samuel Lawrence, Avilla, Ind. Four NJHA board members handed over their maroon jacks after giving their retiring addresses. Retiring board members include 2019-20 chairman Taylor Belle Matheny, Mays Lick, Ky, 2019-20 vice chairman Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas, 2019-20 communications chair, Hannah Williams, Kearney, Neb., and 2019-20 director Brandt Downing, Culver, Ore. JW Cox is the 18-year-old son of John and Shane Moran from Flemingsburg, Ky., and is attending Western Kentucky University with plans to transfer to Oklahoma State University to finish up an animal science degree and apply to vet school. He hopes to then attend Colorado State University to receive his doctor of veterinary medicine degree. JW has enjoyed the connections and friendship he has made while being a member of the NJHA. He was active in his FFA chapter and is a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Lauren McMillan is the 18-year-old daughter of Kyle and Jodi McMillan from Tiskilwa, Ill., and is currently attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and majoring in organization and community leadership. Lauren has been an active member of the Illinois Junior Hereford Association and has served as vice president, secretary, awards chairman and director. She has been involved in student council, 4-H and FFA and has held several leadership roles in each program. Lauren has also been attending the NJHA Faces of Leadership conference for the last five years. Ralston Ripp is the 19-year-old daughter of Cody and Ronette Heinrich from Kearney, Neb., and is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska — Lincoln majoring in animal science and agribusiness. Ralston is currently the vice president of the Nebraska Junior Hereford Association. In the past she has held the office of secretary, reporter, historian and director. Ralston was also the 2018 Nebraska State Hereford Queen and National Hereford Queen candidate. In high school, she was very active in FFA and 4-H.

Libby Ruston is the 18-year-old daughter of Lee and Andrea Rushton from Waverly, Tenn., and is a freshman at the University of Tennessee – Martin and majoring in agricultural business and political science. In the future, she hopes to represent an agriculture based company or organization in the public relations or political field. She has held a variety of offices and leadership roles through her involvement in the Middle Tennessee Hereford Association, 4-H and FFA. PURPLE REIGN CATTLE COMPANY NAMED PREMIER ADULT BREEDER AT THE 2020 JNHE In addition to exhibitions, Hereford youth competed in numerous special contests during the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City. These contests awarded young people both individually and as groups for their dedication to Hereford cattle and to honor their successes throughout the JNHE. Bryden and Aidyn Barber, Channing, Texas, were named the junior premier exhibitor. Jarrett Shane Worrell, Mason, Texas, was named the junior premier breeder. Adult premier breeder honors went to Purple Reign Cattle Co., Toulon, Ill. Winning the GKB Super States contest were the states of Colorado and Texas. The champion pair was sired by MCKY Destiny 6458 ET and the reserve pair was sired by SULL TCC Harley 4069B ET.
BOATMAN AWARDED TOP PLACING AT JNHE BULL SHOW 2020 JNHE Grand Champion Bull Title Comes to Illinois Kendall Boatman, Rockford, Ill., exhibited the grand champion bred-and-owned bull and Sage Krebs, Gordon, Neb., showed the reserve grand champion, July 13, at the 21st annual VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, Mo. The bred-and-owned bull show was sponsored by Grand Meadow Farm, Ada, Mich. Drew Perez, Canyon, Texas, sorted 69 bulls to name the champions. Boatman’s bull, 2TK PERKS 5101 Chuma 8184 ET, won grand and Division V champion. The Oct. 8, 2018, son of C 5280 Diversified 6121 ET is owned in partnership with Walter McGuffee, Mendenhall, Miss.; Perks Ranch, Rockford, Ill.; and Stephens Hereford Farms, Taylorville, Ill. THE HARFST AND BEHRENDS FAMILIES OBTAIN TOP HONORS IN COW/CALF SHOW Fallon and Gunnar Gohr, Madras, Ore., won the grand champion cow-calf pair in the cow-calf show at the 21st annual VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, Mo., on July 14. The show was sponsored by Innisfail Farm, Madison, Ga. Judge Kyle Conley, Sulphur, Okla., picked Gohr’s pair out of the 26 pairs shown with associate judge, Jeremy Haag, Smithville, Mo. The Gohr family won grand champion cow-calf pair with KJ B002 Misty Cat F2 ET, a January 2018 cow sired by CRR 719 Catapult 109 with a calf at side, and bred by Brady Jensen, Courtland, Kan. The reserve grand champion cow-calf pair was exhibited by Sara Harfst, Jacksonville, Ore. Her cow, WRB Last Dance 418, is a January 2018 daughter of MH 122L T- Bone 1363 ET with a calf at side, and bred by Mariah Behrends, San Jose, Ill.

IL JUNIORS COMPETITIVE IN BRED AND OWNED HEIFER SHOW Rylee, Bryden and Aidyn Barber, Channing, Texas, and their heifer, BR Halsey 9099, rose to the top of the bred-andowned female show during the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Kansas City, Mo., July 13. Carly Kolterman, Garland, Neb., with Kolt Rustic Wine 5546 ET, claimed the reserve grand champion title. The bred-and-owned heifer show was sponsored by Buck Cattle Co., Madill, Okla.; Moore Cattle Co., Madill; and Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla. Judge Kyle Conley, Sulphur, Okla., sorted the 245-head show with associate judge Jeremy Haag, Smithville, Mo. Barber claimed grand champion honors and topped Division IV with an April 1, 2019, daughter of BR Belle Air 6011. Kolterman won reserve grand champion and reserve champion of Division IV with an April 28, 2019, daughter of K Rustic 711 ET.

IL IMPRESSIVE SHOWING IN OWNED HEIFER SHOWS AT JNHE Lauren May, Mineral Point, Wis., won the horned owned female show with Purple Iris 145G ET and Vada and Hans Vickland, Longmont, Colo., and their heifer, H KFL Pixie 9372 ET, won the polled owned female show at the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo, July 15, in Kansas City, Mo. Dr. Dan Shike of Sadorus, Ill., and associate judge Kyle Colyer of Bruneau, Idaho, judged the owned show with 208 horned heifers and 472 polled heifers exhibited. The reserve grand champion polled owned heifer banner went to Jillian Emerson, Prairie Grove, Ark., with BK Golden Hour 9057G. Vada and Hans Vickland, Longmont, Colo., with H BL Miss Spice 923 ET, took home reserve grand champion honors in the horned owned heifer show. Vickland’s grand champion polled heifer, H KFL Pixie 9372 ET, was first named Division VIII champion. She was a Jan. 23, 2019, daughter of H Montgomery 7437 ET. Emerson’s reserve grand champion polled owned female, a Sept. 3, 2019, daughter of H FHF Authority 6026 ET, was also Division II champion. HEREFORD JUNIORS COMPETE IN VIRTUAL NATIONAL CONTESTS More than 750 youth and their families from 37 states and Canada gathered at the 21st annual VitaFermÂŽ Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Kansas City, July 10-15, to compete in educational and leadership events in and out of the show ring. Juniors competed in virtual skill-based contests including illustrated speaking, sales, interviewing and photography. These contests allow the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) to carry out their joint mission of leadership and education. HEREFORD JUNIORS AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS AND ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS Outstanding Hereford youth were awarded numerous scholarships during the 2020 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Kansas City, Mo. The Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and the National Hereford Women (NHW) awarded $25,000 alone at this year’s JNHE, and will award a total of $200,000 in 2020 to deserving junior members to aid in their academic endeavors.

NEOGEN, AHA ANNOUNCE EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP Neogen Genomics and the American Hereford Association (AHA) are announcing the launch of an educational partnership to help association members make the best use of the rapidly evolving genomic tools available to them. Through the partnership, AHA members will have expanded access to Neogen’s genomics expertise at in-person AHAsanctioned conferences and other meetings, as well as via on-line events and resources. “We are very pleased to announce our expanded partnership with the American Hereford Association,” said Neogen’s Director of Marketing and Sales, Tom Schultz. “Just as beef producers seek constant improvement as they move from one generation of animals to the next, we constantly seek to improve the products that we offer the beef industry from one generation to the next.
