Champions Named at 2015 National Junior Angus Show Nearly 800 Angus juniors and their families traveled to Tulsa, Okla., to compete in the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) July 13-18 at the Built Ford Tough Livestock Complex at Expo Square. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members represented “Angus Leading the Way” as they exhibited 1,169 entries during the weeklong event that included more than a dozen educational contests in addition to the cattle show. Kevin Jensen, Courtland, Kan., judged the 707 owned heifers; Chris Effling, Highmore, S.D., assisted in judging the owned heifers; Jim Pipkin, Republic, Mo., judged the 277 bred-and-owned heifers, 43 cow-calf pairs, and 73 bred-and-owned bulls; Dave Nichols, Manhattan, Kan., assisted in judging the bred-and-owned heifers and cow-calf pairs; and Matt Leo, Snelling, Calif., judged the 69 steers. Esther McCabe, Elk City, Kan., showed the grand champion owned female, PVF Missie 4149. The winning heifer is a June 2014 daughter of C&C Priority 1428B EXAR and was first named intermediate champion – division 2. Dawson Dal Porto, Brentwood, Calif., led the reserve grand champion owned female. DPL Sandy 3105 is an October 2013 daughter of Silveiras Style 9303 and first won early senior champion. Chase Anderson, Chrisman, Ill., captured grand champion bred-and-owned female honors with DDA Northern Miss 1343. The September 2013 daughter of Silveiras Style 9303 first won senior champion. Sydney Schnoor, Chowchilla, Calif., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female, S Sis Sandy 920. The April 2014 daughter of Dameron First Impression was first named late junior champion. Ryan Callahan, Edmond, Okla., won grand champion bred-and-owned bull honors with C&C Blue Ribbon 4010. The January 2014 son of EXAR Blue Chip 1877B first won junior champion. Shelby Stabler, Gaithersburg, Md., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned bull. CherryKnolPleasantClassen142 is a September 2014 son of EXAR Classen 1422B and was first named calf champion. Madison Cox, Eagle Point, Ore., showed the grand champion owned cow-calf pair. EXAR Princess 3421 is a March 2013 daughter of Dameron First Class, and first topped the two-year-old division. A February 2015 heifer calf sired by V A R Reserve 1111 was at side. Karisa Pfeiffer, Orlando, Okla., led the reserve grand champion owned cow-calf pair. EXAR Envious Blackbird 3860 is a March 2013 daughter of EXAR Classen 1422B with a March 2015 daughter of PVF Insight 0129 at side. The pair first won reserve champion two-year-old pair. Colby Perry, Prather, Calif., claimed grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with DC Pride 302, a February 2013 daughter of Dameron First Impression. A March 2015 heifer calf sired by B C Lookout 7024 was at side. The duo first won champion two-year-old pair. Reagan Skow, Palisade, Neb., captured reserve grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with Reagan’s Elsa Erica 2059. The February 2012 daughter of VAR Rocky 80029 had a January 2015 daughter of K C F Bennett Absolute. They first won champion mature pair. Sarah Pelton, Paradise, Kan., earned grand champion steer honors with Buchanan’s Spot On T310. He is the March 2014 son of Dameron First Impression. Ryan Callahan, Edmond, Okla., claimed bredand-owned grand champion steer and reserve grand champion steer with C&C Priority 4036. He is the February 2014 son of C&C Priority 1428B EXAR. NJAA Recognizes an Illinois ‘Show Mom’ Sherry Adcock receives Advisor of the Year award at the 2015 NJAS. Sherry Adcock of Illinois is often the first in the barns at a cattle show. Throughout her years of service to the Illinois Junior Angus Association (IJAA), junior members are proud to consider her a “show mom” who is always prepared and willing to lend a hand. A warm personality, coupled with a strong dedication to the Angus breed and its youth, are a few reasons why Adcock was recognized with the Advisor of the Year award during the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla. “Sherry is one of those extraordinary leaders who will do whatever is necessary to achieve success, no matter the task,” says Gabrielle Lemenager, IJAA president. “She is best known as the organized perfectionist who does a great deal of the behind-the-scenes work that many of our juniors never realize occurs.” Junior members would also say Sherry is devoted to each individual. She encourages juniors from their first year to their last to become more involved within the organization. Arriving before the show begins to get things started, and leaving once everything is cleaned, are a few reasons why Sherry has been known as “show mom.” “Sherry has touched the lives of so many kids in a positive way because of her selfless devotion of both her time and energy to the betterment of the IJAA,” wrote the McClure family, Lawrenceville, Ill. “She sees the bigger picture well beyond just showing cattle and how these organizations can leave a lasting imprint on our youth.” Though Sherry is known for being a positive influence for Illinois Angus juniors, she is also deeply involved within her community as a 4-H leader, past Central A&M School District’s nurse, member of her church and local judging competitions. “Sherry has an undeniable passion for Angus cattle, the Angus industry and Angus people,” said Keegan Cassady, IJAA secretary. “She expects everyone to do their share, without complaining, and treats all of us equally with praise and encouragement.” The National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) presents the Advisor of the Year Award each year at the NJAS, which includes a detailed portrait sketch that celebrates the advisor’s commitment to the future of the Angus breed. The award was introduced in 1980 to recognize the tremendous contributions of junior Angus association advisors. Any junior Angus association advisors are eligible for the award by sending in a letter of nomination.

Celebrate 35 Years with the Angus Foundation Reserve a place at the annual Supporter Recognition Event Nov. 2 in Overland Park, Kan. Over its 35-year-history, the Angus Foundation has benefitted from hundreds of generous supporters from across the Angus breed. Together, they’ve been able to support Angus education that equips breeders with the knowledge they need to be successful, youth in their dreams of higher education and research to advance the Angus breed into its future generations. This November, the Angus Foundation will celebrate the 35-year milestone and recognize supporters who have contributed $250 or more throughout the current fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2014-Sept. 30, 2015). The event will take place at 6 p.m., Nov. 2, at the Sheraton Hotel, Overland Park, Kan., in conjunction with the 2015 Angus Means Business National Convention & Trade Show. There’s still time to submit a donation to the Angus Foundation, for anyone interested in attending. “The Supporter Recognition Event is the Angus Foundation’s honor and opportunity to say thank you to our supporters,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “Without our loyal contributors we wouldn’t be able to fund the education, youth and research activities we do each and every year.” A delicious meal featuring the Certified Angus Beef® brand will kick off the evening, which will be hosted by the following emcees: National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Chairman Alex Rogen, Brandon, S.D.; NJAB Foundation Director Evan Woodbury, Quenemo, Kan.; and Angus Foundation Board Chairman Charlie Boyd, May’s Lick, Ky. Highlights of the evening include recognizing outstanding supporters from throughout the fiscal year, in addition to those donors in the Lifetime Giving Recognition Program achieving an accumulative giving level of $25,000 or more, since the Angus Foundation’s inception in 1980. A special presentation will also recognize the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) Carcass Steer Contest winners, as well as honoring Boyd for his year of leadership and service on the Angus Foundation Board of Directors. In addition, there will be two auctions during the Supporter Recognition Event that are sure to interest anyone in the Angus business. Dave Nichols, Bridgewater, Iowa, is a long-time supporter and current member of the American Angus Association Board of Directors. This fall, Nichols will be inducted into one of the livestock industry’s most prestigious honors, the Saddle & Sirloin Club Portrait Gallery in Louisville, Ky. To celebrate that occasion, Nichols will be establishing the “Dave Nichols Beef Cattle Research Fund” through the Angus Foundation. On Nov. 2, through an Angus Foundation Board-approved sale, an elite bred Angus heifer, Nichols Lula B14, donated by Nichols Farms will be auctioned with all proceeds used to start the research endowment in Nichols’ honor. For those Angus history enthusiasts and collectors of Angus memorabilia, there will also be an auction for the American Angus Association’s 18 millionth animal registration number. Proceeds from this sale will benefit the Angus Foundation’s education, youth and research initiatives.

Consign NWSS Angus Bulls Now and Save National Western Angus Bull Sale early enrollments receive $100 discount. The American Angus Association® is now accepting consignments for the 2016 National Western Angus Bull Sale hosted during the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colo. The sale is set for Jan. 13, 2016, and producers can save $100 by acting now. Consignments postmarked on or before Sept. 15 are $400 per head. From Sept. 16 through the Oct. 1 entry deadline, the fee is $500 per head. Consignments must have Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®) performance information to be eligible. All bulls born before Jan. 1, 2015, must have passed a complete breeding soundness examination (sometimes referred to as a BSE), including both physical and semen, within 30 days of the sale. The Angus Bull Sale Show will kick-off Angus activities at 8 a.m. Jan. 13, where prospective buyers will have the opportunity to preview the bulls before the sale begins. A panel of three judges will evaluate the bulls using a composite system to establish a sale order. Judges will be Scott Bayer, Ringle, Wis.; Mark Nikkel, Maple Hill, Kan.; and Jake Tiedeman, North Platte, Neb. Attendees will be invited into the showring to inspect bulls after the grand and reserve grand champions have been selected. The 2016 Angus Foundation Heifer Package will sell at 3:30 p.m. in the Beef Palace Auction Arena at the Stock Show Complex. Immediately after, the National Western Angus Bull Sale will begin at approximately 4 p.m. The NWSS Angus Bull Sale is the only sale managed by the Association. Cattle producers are invited to gather for a Cattlemen’s Boot Camp Oct. 15-16 at Oklahoma State University (OSU) in Stillwater, Okla. The event is hosted by the American Angus Association® in partnership with OSU, and provides purebred and commercial producers timely information presented by academic and industry professionals. Registration is now available online and open until Sept. 30. “There’s something for everyone at our Cattlemen’s Boot Camp events,” says Jaclyn Clark, Association director of events and education. “We hope cattle producers in the southwest consider attending as a way to stay up-to-date on the latest technology and tools available to them in the beef business.” Open to all cattle producers, the event is funded by the Angus Foundation and features a day and a half of educational speakers and hands-on activities to help improve their herd operations. The workshop is packed with pertinent information including bull selection, reproductive technologies, genetic markets, forage management and much more. Registration is $75 per person, and includes meals and educational materials. Plan for 2015 NAILE Angus Events Deadlines approaching for the North American International Livestock Exposition. In a few short months, Angus cattle enthusiasts will travel to Louisville, Ky., for shows and events during the 2015 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). From competitive events in the showring to a prestigious honor for Angus breeder Dave Nichols, Bridgewater, Iowa, the week’s activities begin Sunday, Nov. 15. All shows will begin at 8 a.m. in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC) Freedom Hall. The Angus Junior Heifer Show takes place Sunday, Nov. 15; the Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) shows for bulls, cow-calf pairs and females (in that order) will be Monday, Nov. 16. Bruce and Amie Stertzbach of Louisville, Ohio, will judge the ROV Show. The junior show judges are to be announced. If you’re exhibiting at the NAILE, the entry deadline is Oct. 1. Saddle & Sirloin Induction Ceremony Nichols has been selected as the 2015 inductee into the Saddle and Sirloin Portrait Gallery, largely considered the highest honor in the livestock industry. Nichols is a current member of the American Angus Association Board of Directors, and Nichols Farms has grown under his leadership to encompass 5,500 acres, 1,500 head of breeding stock and a small feedlot. The Saddle & Sirloin Club will honor these and Dave’s other industry contributions, too numerous to list, during a special program and portrait unveiling at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the South Wing Conference Center of the KFEC. Angus Ambassador Finalist, Sierra Day Illinois junior selected as a finalist during the breed ambassador competition. Sierra Day, Cerro Gordo, Ill., raises purebred Angus on her family’s operation and believes that it is important to get the word out about the multiple programs and services offered through the Angus breed. Day, a senior at Cerro Gordo High School, recently competed in the 2015 Angus Ambassador competition July 23 in Saint Joseph, Mo. Hosted by the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), Day visited the American Angus Association® headquarters along with three other finalists and their families. After the presentations, the judges selected Will Pohlman, Prairie Grove, Ark., as the 2015-2016 Angus Ambassador. Pohlman is a student at the University of Arkansas double majoring in biochemistry and animal science. Joining Day as finalists were Haley Throne, Lexington, Ga., and Dakota Lovett, Bladen, Neb. 14

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Illinois Angus Association - 3/23/15 Submitted by Illinois Angus Association Secretary Aaron Schafer The Illinois Angus Association (IAA) Board of Directors meeting was called to order by President Rose at 10:41. The Roll Call was held. Members present were Anne Chaffin, Brett Par, Doug Turner, Jerry Cassady, Kevin Rose, Lee Stremsterfer, Richard Hurst, Scott Anderson, Trever Kuipers, Carla Jurgenson, Greg McClure, Shelia Grobosky, Sheri Adcock, Garrett Lampe, Tyler Rhode, Tyler Schleich, Gary Simpson, Keith Kramer, & David Jenkins. Members absent were Cheryl Day, Alan Miller, John DeRycke, John Kirchner, Ryan Schlipf, Casey Jentz, and Jim Marsh. The minutes of the Feb. 19, 2015 meeting were presented. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Bret Par and seconded Trever Kuipers. The motion passed. Doug Turner gave the Business Manager’s report. Doug informed the board that we are slightly down in membership this year. But, our finances are still in good order. A motion to approve the report was made by Scott Anderson and seconded by Tyler Schleich. The motion carried. Lee Stremsterfer gave the Sale committee report. He told the board of the final sale report from the Illinois Angus Futurity: 13 Bulls averaged $8,134, 35 heifers averaged $5,071, & 5 bred females averaged $6,940. The average on 53 lots was $6,000. The sale expense for the sale was 9.89 percent of the gross dollars. The internet was very active during the sale. There were 42 internet bids, two purchases, and 370 viewers. The show committee report was given by Greg McClure. Kyle Gillooly will be our open show judge at the state fair this year. The American Angus Association (AAA) Board of Directors are looking the possibility of expanding the age limits for participation at junior shows. They are also entertaining the idea of allowing dual ownership of animals at junior shows. Garrett Lampe made a motion to draft a letter to the AAA Board of Directors to encourage these changes. David Jenkins seconded this motion. It passed unanimously. The promotions committee had no report. Carla Jurgenson gave the finance committee report. The finance committee reviewed the 2015 budget and found a small error. It has been fixed and are now recommending the budget for approval. The recommendation was passed by the board. Trever Kuipers, Banquet Committee chair, thanked everyone for their help and attendance at the banquet. The Illinois Angus News committee report to the board was given by Jill Johnson. She told us that the current Illinois Beef magazine contains the IAA information from the Illinois Beef Expo. A discussion was held concerning the future of the Illinois Angus News. Nothing was decided at this time. Sheri Adcock gave the junior report to the board. She discussed the success of the “Seeds for the Future” sale. It brought in $19,320 and the silent auction totaled $1,625. We did not have an AAA report from Casey Jentz due to poor weather. 16

“Raising the Bar” conference was held in Champaign. The juniors were given tours of the University of Illinois (U of I) Animal Sciences Department, Dameron Angus Farm, Prairie View Farm, and Top given tours of the University of Illinois (U of I) Animal Sciences Department, Dameron Angus Farm, Prairie View Farm, and Top Line Farm. Reid Blossom informed the board of the latest from the Illinois Beef Association (IBA). The Illinois Beef Checkoff passed with an 88 percent yes vote. The state checkoff will be assessed beginning July 1, 2015. Shelia Grobosky told the group about the second year of the Young Beef Leaders program. She also invited board members to the culinary workshop to be held at Lincoln Land Community College. The event is part of the IBA’s “May Beef Month” promotion. Jill Johnson discussed the Illinois Junior Beef Association activities that will be held this summer. We also talked about the Illinois Angus Directory. The deadline for advertisements is Apr. 15, 2015. Bret Par made a motion to give the Illinois Angus Auxiliary and the Illinois Junior Angus Association each a page in the IAA Directory. The motion was seconded by Jerry Cassady, and passed by the board. The Illinois Angus News committee will decide who to dedicate the directory to. The Business Manager will do the billing for the ads in the directory. Old Business: None New Business: The board received a letter requesting our support of the U of I Hoof-N-Horn Club jackpot steer and heifer show. Jerry Cassady made a motion to donate the same amount as last year. This motion was seconded by Tyler Rhode and passed by the board. The Nominating Committee report was given at this time. Tyler Rhode spoke on behalf of the committee. He nominated the slate of officers for the 2015-2016 year as follows: Richard Hurst as president, Scott Anderson as vice president, Aaron Schafer as secretary, and Doug Turner as business manager. Garrett Lampe seconded this motion. Jerry Cassady made a motion to close the nominations and cast a unanimous ballet. Garrett Lampe was the second to this motion. The motion carried. A motion to adjourn was made by Jerry Cassady and seconded by Greg McClure. The motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 12:00.
